Without question, one of Team Canyon Runner’s most valuable tools is the implementation of SiriusXM’s sea surface temperature overlays on our plotters. For example, we can manipulate the SST data with a range from, say, 68 to 85 degrees. Product Review COBRA MARINE JUMPACK XL H2O The JumPack XL H2O is Cobra’s most versatile and powerful portable power source and jump starter yet. In February, Raymarine partnered with FLIR to bring to market its most advanced marine radar system. Quantum 2, with Doppler target identification, is designed for integration with Raymarine’s awardwinning Axiom multifunction displays to enhance boaters’ situational awareness by intelligently identifying moving and static targets at both long and short ranges. Quantum 2 is tuned to detect moving versus stationary targets. It color codes moving targets to indicate whether they are getting closer (red) or moving away (green). In addition, Quantum 2 brings a new Safety Sector feature that highlights and color codes potentially dangerous static targets within 200 meters in front of the vessel. Advanced users will appreciate Quantum 2’s 25-target mini-automatic radar plotting aid (MARPA). Developed for the United States Coast Guard, Quantum 2’s MARPA feature is doppler-assisted, meaning inbound contacts can be acquired automatically by the radar display to ease navigation in congested waters. Quantum 2 also features CHIRP Pulse Compression technology, which uses compressed radar pulses to display targets like boats, landmarks, rocks and weather cells with unsurpassed resolution and separation. Quantum 2’s flexible design allows for Wi-Fi networking to Raymarine multifunction displays (MFDs) or via traditional wired configuration, making installation much easier and eliminating the need for additional radar cabling or interface boxes.
ACR Electronics is making life easier and safer for boat owners with pre-packed premium boating Survival Kits. Product Review FURUNO INTRODUCES NEW DUAL TOUCH-SCREEN BLACK BOX OFFERING Furuno set a new standard for touch-screen technology when they introduced NavNet TZtouch2, the first multi-function display (MFD) to utilize edge-swipe technology. In February, they raised the bar on innovative navigation solutions with the introduction of a Black Box NavNet TZtouch2 system, the TZT2BB. This next step in the NavNet series takes the feature set of the award-winning TZtouch2 and packs it into a brand-new black box configuration with dual-display capability. The TZT2BB packs enough processing power to drive two separate touch-screen displays, delivering twice the navigation potential from a single, compact black box unit, for the most technologically advanced all-glass bridge available. TZT2BB can drive two independent monitors such as Furuno’s 17”, 19” or 24” Multi Touch Displays, which allows you to seamlessly move from one screen to the other. It has the capability to handle different monitor resolutions and aspect ratios, which is convenient if you want to utilize existing monitors of different sizes. It also supports full HD video input in HDMI format, for surveillance cameras, sonar or entertainment systems. The TZT2BB operates with the same intuitive Multi Touch interface as the current TZtouch2 MFDs. You can add an optional external keyboard. Customers looking to upgrade from a NavNet 3D Black Box system will be happy to learn that the external TZT2BB keyboard is the same size as their existing keyboard, making it an easy swap, with no cutting. A retrofit kit will be available as an option to convert NavNet 3D’s MFDBB keyboard for use with the new TZT2BB. T
he gripe came from up on the poling platform, “You won’t see any fish when you’re sitting in the boat blasting Garth Brooks.” Maybe tarpon on this particular stretch of the Florida coast don’t like country music. Or maybe it had something to do with the sound system, which was garbage. Over the wind and waves, the noise rattling from the speakers was barely discernible as music, so we turned it off… and didn’t spot the first fish through an 8-hour day on the water. It’s during slow trips like these when good tunes are most important. The songs become the soundtracks to our adventures. That’s why you owe it to your fishing buddies to have a good sound system on the boat. When it comes to sound quality, there isn’t a company out there better than Miramar, Florida’s JL Audio. Since the mid1970s, when co-founders Lucio Proni and Jim Birch built speakers during summer break from college, the company has grown into one of the most respected audio brands in the world. JL Audio stepped into the marine market in 2005, and in 2016 they introduced the MediaMaster 100 (MM100), which quickly became the high-end source unit of choice for boaters who really care about sound quality. The source unit is where it all starts. It’s the head unit that receives input from your music-playing device and channels it through the amplifiers to the speakers. The source unit is also the dashboard where you control it all. Off the bat, it was apparent JL Audio had designed an exceptional unit, built to stand up to the rigors of sun and salt with all the features expected of a modern sound system. Already known for producing marine amplifiers, speakers and subwoofers of superb quality, JL Audio now had the final piece for a full marine sound system. It was an important step for a brand that values audio quality above all else. “There is nothing else in the marine market like it,” said Alan Wenzel, JL Audio’s VP of business development and strategic planning. “Others may have operating systems with more bells and whistles, but their sound doesn’t come close to ours.” Boaters appreciated the sweet, crisp sound pumping at 4 volts through the RCA jacks. The signal is noticeably clearer than the industry-standard 2-volt output. And the unit’s excellent control flexibility allows for a wide range of zone configurations, which is critical to overcoming the ambient noise of the marine environment. Modern source units are expected to provide connectivity with a host of different devices, and MM100 does this with Bluetooth and USB as well as an analog auxiliary input, so you can even plug in a tape deck and play your old Grateful Dead bootlegs if you want to. unit is SiriusXM ready and includes a built-in AM/FM/Weatherband tuner. It is also NMEA 2000 certified, which means it will communicate with compatible multi-function displays from brands like Simrad, Lowrance, Garmin and more. The physical design of the MM100 is what you would expect from a top-of-the-line piece of marine equipment. It looks cool, and it’s intuitive, with a bright, full-color LCD screen and large, backlit controls that are easy to use while in motion. There’s even the option to add remote controls. What JL Audio launched in 2016 remains the best sounding source unit available. A long list of high-quality boat builders jumped on board to install JL Audio systems standard. “The premier brands are the ones we wanted to partner with,” said Wenzel, “especially the ones that are really conscious of the quality of their product.” The MM100 is a high-end unit designed to drive high-end systems for the kind of control, sound and power demanded by audiophiles. And the price point reflects that. Soon after the release of the MM100, Wenzel said customers began asking for a source unit with built-in power and a more mainstream price point. Not everyone needs to hear the triangle ping in Vivaldi’s Four Seasons across the deck of a sport fishing yacht. In response, JL Audio engineers developed the Media Master 50, which becomes available on the retail market this month. By trimming a few of the bells and whistles off the MM100, JL Audio engineers developed a source unit that has all of the sound quality of its top-of-theline unit, but on a smaller scale, perfect for boats that can get by on two sound zones instead of four. With built-in amplifiers capable of producing 100 watts of high-fidelity output, the MM50 is also NMEA certified and compatible with most everything the MM100 is. And like all JL Audio products, accurate sound reproduction was the No. 1 focus in its design. Wenzel said JL Audio would never release anything that doesn’t meet their stringent criteria for sound quality and durability in the marine environment. This attention to quality is what built the JL Audio brand. “Because we are a true audio company, we know a lot about audio reproduction,” he said. “We do everything we can to exceed the standards. We do thousands of hours of listening testing as well as environmental testing before anything is manufactured.” While most audio companies farm out their designs, JL Audio has dozens of electrical and audio engineers on staff. Their marine speakers, assembled at their Miramar headquarters undergo 2,000 hours of salt and UV testing in onsite environmental chambers, which is four times the industry standard of 500 hours. know I’m not the first person to notice that we’re losing prime fishable time from our already foreshortened New England seasons. I also know, having discussed this apparent new trend of the last decade or so with numerous folks in seemingly every party of the larger fishing industry, that the underlying causes for this new challenge are numerous and complex. Obviously, the last 15 years of regulatory wrangling have cost us many or most of our historical rod-and-reeling options—especially those early-season opportunities that helped foregoing generations of anglers justify a decision to dump the boat in three weeks on the frigid side of Memorial Day. Winter flounder landed on the off-limits list some years back with a regulation that closed Rhode Island’s various salt ponds and other estuaries up Narragansett Bay—in reality, all the remaining places that held enough spring flatfish to warrant so much as an attempt. So have those who target spring tautog in Narragansett Bay lost much of their traditional window of focused blackfishing. Some years, we’ve paid for a previous season’s summer flounder excesses with a very late opener that cost us most or all of May. In at least as many cases, biological/ecological reality have put a serious dent in our early angling ambitions. Whereas we enjoyed solid spring codfishing through the 1980s—and had some good years thereafter—the April-May action south and east of Block Island has failed to materialize, even in the years we’ve had bang-up groundfishing straight through the winter. While there’s little doubt the loss of these one-time spring fishing opportunities has contributed to the universal decline in spring effort, truth is, even when those were viable options for folks dying to get an early jump, only a small fraction of Ocean State recs ever really logged much time in those fisheries. Put another way, it wasn’t winter flounder that used to have local marinas starting a waiting list before June. The economic meltdown in 2008 sure didn’t help things for the boating/fishing public. But even in the darkest days of that period, fishing participation was up. In fact, it has typically been true that fishing participation resists economic turmoil better than most leisure activities. Although the decline in spring fishing has been clear for the better part of the last ten years, it has intensified at an alarming rate the last few seasons, to the extent that friends of mine in the marina, tackle, and party/charter-fishing businesses are getting scared for the future. The problem is that there’s no obvious problem to blame for the sharp decline in spring activity. I hate to say it, lest various folks with whom I’ve argued loudly in recent years accuse me of somehow relishing in their misfortune, but I can’t shake the feeling that the lack of early-season fishing ambition/ energy is a direct consequence of our striper situation, specifically the disruption, two years back, of the longstanding two-striper economy. If I’ve learned one thing in my 20-year run in the fishery, it’s that in a community as small and as tight as RI’s sport-fishing world, nothing ever happens in a vacuum. Through the regulatory process that culminated in the passage of measures that reduced the possession limit from two to a single striped bass, all kinds of animosity grew between “private” recreational anglers

Quick Routes to Keeper Fluke BY TOM SCHLICHTER
N
o matter where you fish in the Northeast, fluke regulations are a little on the tight side. With a large minimum sizes and low creel limits, catching a few isn’t really a problem. Catching enough that are big enough to legally bring home for dinner, well, that can sometimes be a very different story. Also known as summer flounder, fluke are the major draw for Long Island’s summertime bottom-fishing fans and a favorite out of Connecticut and Rhode Island anglers as well. Because word gets out fast when a solid bite of decent fish beaks out, fishing pressure can be intense in the better-known hot spots, resulting in the “keepers” being culled rather quickly. That means if you want to keep taking home dinner, you’ll need to move around a bit, try new areas and, perhaps, experiment with a few new approaches to tempt those bigger fish that manage to slip through the fleet. CHOOSE QUALITY OVER QUANTITY The starting point to catching more keeper fluke is the decision to target bigger fish at the expense of faster-paced action with smaller ones. Using larger baits is one way to entice big fluke while discouraging the small guys from biting. The adage “big baits for big fish” certainly applies in fluke fishing and making the switch doesn’t have to be difficult. Begin by cutting longer strips of squid or fish for bait. Instead of the traditional three- or four-inch long pennant of squid, use six- to eight-inch long strips cut to measure no more than half-
an-inch wide. Slice the last two inches of the strip at the narrow end to create a split-tail that will flutter enticingly in the current. Hook these strips once in the wide end so they ride straight out behind the bend of the hook. Sliced sea robin, mackerel and bluefish strips work as well or even better than squid once the season starts rolling. Berkley Gulp! Swimming Minnows work well, too, although they seem to catch a little better as the season advances in to early June. If you want to tip your strip bait with little something extra, shun the standard spearing, sand eel or live killie and opt for larger, frozen smelt. For those planning on using bucktails, forget the small profile half-ounce size and tie on something outlandish like an eight-inch red or white jelly worm impaled on a three-quarter to one-ounce leadhead or bucktail jig or a six-inch Berkley Gulp! saltwater grub with a nuclear chicken color pattern. FISH DEEP AND PROBE STRUCTURE Big fish like big water and this rule finds fluke to be no exception. Look for the deeper channels leading to inlets and harbor mouths to hold the biggest summer flatties. Instead of drifting casually across back-bay flats in four to six feet of water, target areas with eight feet or more under your hull. What you need to find in this instance is an area where the water looks rich green or blue. On a clear day, the bottom should still be well out of sight, providing shade and production to big fish holding in

the sand. Structure is also key when it comes to finding the biggest fluke. Bridge pilings, bulkheads, rotting docks, jetty walls, artificial reefs, boulder-strewn bottom and sunken debris are all attractive to doormats. Just about any form of structure in deep water will hold a few resident fluke of keeper proportions. Unlike small fluke, which are willing to expend plenty of energy to feed and thus will hug bottom in even the strongest of currents, big fluke like to lie in the lee of underwater obstructions and wait opportunistically for bergalls, small blackfish, sea bass, porgies, snappers and the like to carelessly swim past. How do you interest these big fluke? Fish tight to the structure, trying to keep your line within five yards of the snags at all times. Probe these areas during periods of light currents – during the first and last hour of a tide, for example. It also helps to work these pieces when the wind is calm, as you can stay right alongside the structure for a longer period of time. If the structure is outside of a navigation channel, consider anchoring-up and working your bait diligently around the perimeter. You won’t catch many fluke fishing this way, but you’ll get to take home just about any fish you hook and manage to wrestle into the boat.

Jump Into the Season at Freeport, NY
B
eing that the vast majority of Northeast striped bass tend to migrate up the coast from Chesapeake Bay or the Hudson River, it makes sense to meet them at the nearest point when the season firsts gets started. For most Coastal Angler readers living on Long Island or in Connecticut and Rhode Island, that means heading south and west. To that end, Freeport, NY, serves as a great jumping off point since it is here the linesiders begin smashing into bunker schools, entering the Long Island’s South Shore estuary system before fanning out along the beaches and continuing east toward Montauk Point or points further north and east. If you already have a boat in the Jones Beach area at this time of year you are sitting pretty. By early May, the linesiders should already be cruising through near-shore ocean waters in pursuit of bunker and up inside Jones Inlet, Reynolds Channel and the various creeks, cuts and smaller bays that make up South Oyster Bay where they’ll gobble anything from spearing to sand crabs. There is some beach access throughout this area for those without boats, especially along the Jones Beach stretches, but if you aren’t lucky enough to be in the water in this sector you’ll otherwise have to depend on the charter boat fleet to reach the action. That is, of course, unless you also happen to be a Freedom Boat Club member. The company provides its members a fleet of over 100 boats (in the 22 to 24 foot range) at eleven locations across Long Island, Connecticut and Rhode Island – and one of them just happens to be right on Freeport Creek, just east of the famous Nautical Mile on Woodcleft Canal. Members of any Freedom Boat Club across the country can sail out of any of the club’s 160+ franchise locations. That means if you are member of the Long Island club in Freeport, Babylon, Northport, Port Jefferson or Port Washington on Long

Island, Mystic, CT, or even Newport, Rhode Island, you have access to the striper run, fluke, sea bass or whatever else happen to be swimming in the waters around Jones Inlet throughout the year. “I used to have my own boat,” says Joe DeGregorio, a Freeport Freedom Boat Club member, “I like this better. I show up at the dock and the boat is ready to go. I hop in and head out and I don’t even have to scrub it down when I get back - that’s all taken care of by the staff.” Bosh Firoz, another Freeport Boat Club member, agrees that the nohassle approach to boating is the way to go. “I’m on the water headed to the fishing ground 10 minutes after I park my car,” he says with delight. He also points out there are an amazing number of great fishing spots within a halfhour ride of home base. “I’m a serious striper fanatic,” says Firoz, “and I love that it’s a 15-minute straight shot from the dock to Jones Inlet. That means I can be out in the ocean and on the fish in less than half-an hour. The striper fishing around here has been super the past few years with May and October being the top months. I really love the spring season because there are tons of 20- to 30-pound stripers along with some even bigger fish riding herd on bunker schools. It makes for some very exciting action.” For anglers with May stripers on the brain, Firoz suggests heading straight for the ocean. “I stick with the center consoles,” he states. “All are in good condition and have 150- to 200-hp outboards. They are efficient on gas with enough power to get out of Jones Inlet without any worries as long as

WORD ON THE BITE (Continued from Page 6) Mother Nature cooperates.” Once Firoz breaks the inlet, he begins searching east and west for flocks of diving birds. Often he’ll find them within a few hundred yards of the beach, although they can be as far as two or three miles from the surf some days. When he spots a working flock, he approaches the mayhem at slow speed, circling ahead of the fish so that the schools come to the boat rather than the other way around. A slow and quiet approach, he offers, rarely spooks the fish. Crashing the action at full throttle, on the other hand, can put both bass and bait down in a hurry. “If there are bunker around, I’ll try to isolate a pod, snag a one and then swim it back into the school,” relates Firoz. “Most days, it doesn’t take long to hook-up. If the action is exploding on the surface, I might also use a popper – there’s nothing more exciting than seeing a big bass explode on your lure as it works across the surface. If we don’t spot any surface action after a little while we’ll try jigging or maybe even troll a bit to cover some ground as we keep searching. The Point Lookout area is generally where we find the bass first.” While Firoz favors the bass whenever they are around, he’s not opposed to doing a little bottom fishing. Fluke are another of his favorite targets, as are black sea bass and porgies when in season. The fluke, he notes, have proved picky over the past couple of years with the best catches found around ocean structure. Fortunately, there are some great reefs within a short ride of the inlet. “It’s only minutes to the Atlantic Beach Reef,” explains Firoz,” and both the McAllister Grounds and Hempstead Reef are a short ride away. All three hold some nice fluke, plus sea bass and porgies at different points in the year. Later, in the fall, they are also good for blackfishing. Bluefish action can also be real good here, both in the ocean and back inside the bays. The inside fish tend to be cocktails – perfect for the grill.” Whereas Firoz tends to hit the ocean, DeGregorio does most of his Freeport fishing inside the bays. He’ll target stripers at nearby bridges
such as those crossing the Meadowbrook, Loop and Wantagh parkways. Here anglers can connect on bucktails, swim shads, clam chum, bunker chunks or live bunker if the schools invade the inside passages. Marsh edges and channel mouths or bends are also good starting points. He’ll toss a variety of soft plastics and poppers for the bass, and Fluke fishing has been picky on along Long also targets fluke during Island’s West End for the past few years. May and June. Just look at a map of the inside waters around Freeport and you’ll see tons of marsh islands, channels that range from deep to shallow, and structure points that just scream fish here. For DeGregorio, every spot holds some potential, and you’d be surprised how far back into the bays the fish can set up. “The bridges are obvious flash points for the stripers,” says DeGregorio,

OutdoorTom.com photo. who this year is a regular member but last season also ran the dock for Freedom Boat Club in Freeport. “Reynolds Channel is well-known for its fluking potential, too, but the back bays can really produce during May as well because the shallows heat up quicker than waters that are closer to the inlet.” Indeed, local anglers have long worked Sloop Channel, Haunts Creek, Broad Creek Channel and Jones Bay, but DeGregorio points to The Narrows just west of Freeport Creek, Merrick Bay and Middle Bay as additional potential hot spots during May. The best thing about these spots, he says, is that they are all just minutes from the dock – and available to fish even when a roiled inlet prevents boaters from reaching the ocean. It just further proof that for Freedom Boat Club members, membership has its privileges.
KEEPER FLUKE (Continued from Page 5) Island and in the rips around Block Island, and the deep waters bordering points or ledges in Long Island Sound, offer a great opportunity to gather a full limit of fluke you can be proud about. Look for the most consistent action to take place in 30 to 50-foot depths during May and early June. From Father’s Day through Independence Day, the big fish action may shift toward 20-foot depths for a while, but it will certainly slide back out to deeper water as temperatures continue to warm come mid-July. Of course, if you plan to run outside the bays and harbors, be sure to pick your days carefully. Ocean and open Long Island Sound waves kick up faster and larger than bay and harbor waters. Be aware, too, that inlets can get rough on a tide change, making it difficult to come back inside once you’ve gotten out into more open waters. While fluking on the outside offers great potential, discretion is the better part of valor. BEEF UP YOUR GEAR I used to love to use light tackle for fluke fishing, but it is no longer a practical choice if creeling your limit is the prime concern. With the bigger fish in deeper water or around structure, more sinker weight is needed to hold bottom. Put aside the eightpound-class spinning sticks and opt for a conventional set-up spooled with 15- to 20-pound test line. Choose a fairly stiff rod with a tip that can handle three to six ounces of sinker weight and expect to need even more lead when fishing around full- or newmoon tides. Spool-up your conventional rod with braid for this fishing as the thin diameter of these lines will let you hold bottom with significantly less weight than is needed with monofilament lines. The new KastKing KastPro is a good choice. It’s smooth, strong, super sensitive and abrasion resistant. The 40-pound test should be all you need. Remember, you aren’t going to have as many hook-ups when targeting big fluke as you will when mixing it up with the shorts. Thus, you need to take advantage of every strike. A stiff set-up will allow you to set the hook with leverage in deeper water, feel the bottom in strong currents, and handle the power of a doormat if you are lucky enough to tie into something special. Beef up, be ready, and hit the water come opening day.

FISH FOCUS (Continued from Page 3) and so-called “for-hire” (i.e. party/charter) recreational fishermen. Where the final regulations made no distinction between the two groups, the truth is that the two user groups use the striper resource differently. None of the rhetorical specifics of the ongoing arguments matter to my point; I mention the rift between charter captains and private recs only because it has muddied the waters badly—made it difficult for either side to concede common ground with the other. In reality, the loss of the second fish has wounded seriously a charter fleet that spent more than 15 years building repeat clientele and filling out seasonal bookings on a two-bass economy. Through dozens of other regulatory losses—the massive escalation of minimum sizes on fluke, the loss of school bluefin tuna or black sea bass, among endless others—the charter fleet kept sailing on striped bass. But every other regulatory loss ratcheted up pressure on the remaining 2@28” bass. During that same span of years, the fishing media, and by extension the recreational fishing public, went trophy-striper crazy. By 2007 or so, it was becoming challenging for RI charterboats to fill in schedules for the early season—May and early June, or again late, October into November, with fast action on generally smaller migrating fish—when every fishing report or feature made it clear the big girls showed the last week of June, first of July. Then, by 2012 or so, when, despite huge loads of 40- and 50-pounders coming from Block Island, the stock began to show stress cracks, the business started to pull back from the ends of the season. In the heat of the debates, I chastised charter captains for creating their own nightmare, teaching clientele to define trip success in terms of “limiting out” on bass, and in the process turning each new group into the worst kind of meat mongers. To be fair, I had many of those same arguments in the cockpit, an uppity deckape grown a bit too big for his rubberized britches. For all my own public righteousness, I made all kinds
of coin on striper hides—can’t remember a time then when I wept into the full fish boxes over the plight of stripers. Now, the marinas are still gap-toothed (at best) in early June—a sea of open slips right on the threshold of high tourist season. And the charter docks are packed to capacity weekdays, May through late June—the loss of that second all-important striper just enough to get too many clients standing by for slob time. “If it’s only going to be one fish,” goes their logic, “that one’s gonna weight 35 pounds…” What no one anticipated in all of this is the impact on the larger fishing community of all these charter boats chafing the pilings—all the May and June trips they’re not making. I’m only now beginning to see it, and I observed the comings and goings of those boats on a full-time professional basis for almost two decades. The grim reality is that, since the end of the Moratorium, it has always been the charterboats grinding away, command performance after command performance in windy, raw May conditions that set the whole striper-obsessed world in motion again after each brutal winter. It was the party and charter boats, bigger and more seaworthy, who put in the early weather, who found (or confirmed the arrival of) the first shots of early stripers in the Rip or off the SW Corner or down the beach. More to the point, it was the full-timers who not only returned to port with the first loads of good fish, but understood the need to get that word out to the public. Especially now, in an era when the fishery’s young bucks are trying to make trade secrets out of common knowledge, the fish still keep the old migratory schedules. Still, we need to hear it before we’ll roll the dice. To lean on one very old analogy, we are all standing around with our frame packs slung over our shoulders 20 miles from the nearest stand of scrub maples, 50 miles from the nearest trailhead, ears open, wondering when we can expect to hear the first 100-year-old tree hit the forest floor. This article ran in the spring of 2017 but it is a good one and seems so relevant we wanted to share it with our new readers in Long Island and Connecticut.

Good Times At The Sea Spray Abaco Challenge
F
rom Feb. 7-10, 18 teams gathered on Elbow Cay, Abaco, Bahamas at the Sea Spray Resort and Marina for the Second Annual Sea Spray Abaco Challenge. Hosted by the resort, this tournament is becoming known as one of the most enjoyable in the Bahamas. With prize packages through fifth place, affordable entry and value-added categories, nine radio raffles worth $400 each, team bags and buckets stuffed with goodies and fantastic food and live entertainment, this event is all about having fun. This year’s event raised and donated more than $6,000 to the Hope Town Primary School, Every Child Counts Bahamas and Bahamas Air Sea Rescue Association. Wahoo, blackfin and yellowfin tuna and mahi-mahi are the target species, with teams eligible to weigh their two biggest fish from each species on each day of the three-day competition. This year Team Crab Eyes took home the overall championship with a cumulative weight of 292.6 pounds. These guys finished second in the inaugural event and were eager to take home the win. In second place was Team Sonny Boy with a total of 134.3 pounds. Sonny Boy also weighed the biggest fish in the Wahoo Category, and at 52.9 pounds took biggest fish overall for the tournament. In third place was Team Perfect Timing with a total of 83.2 pounds. These guys came from out of nowhere on the last day to make it onto the podium. Special congratulations to Team Family Circus, which won the local Bahamian championship with a total of 65.9 pounds. Their name will be inscribed on the residual trophy at the resort and they took home a beautiful black grouper mount by tournament sponsor King Sailfish Release Mounts. Tricks of the Trade
L
ike land hunters or rod-and-reel fishermen, spearos also study and perfect some tricks of the trade. Spearos immerse themselves into the fishes’ environment, so the first skill to master is to look like you belong there. Beginners tend to exhibit aggressive behavior, chasing and spooking fish. If fish scatter when you get near, study how calmly an experienced diver moves in the water. Until you achieve a non-threatening aura, all other tips and tricks will be useless. After achieving smooth diving technique, here are some techniques to get near fish. 1) Aspetto (Italian for “wait”)—It starts from the surface with a smooth duck-dive into the water while removing the snorkel. You descend with soft kicks until you begin to free-fall as you scan the bottom. By turning your fin blades, you maneuver to the right spot, perhaps where the reef meets sand. You lie motionless on the bottom until curious fish come to check you out. Moving only your eyes, you pick out the prey, move your gun slowly, and make a well-placed shot. A good spearo will make this technique look easy, but it is not. This is especially effective with evasive fish that become curious when you do not move, such as mutton snappers in Florida, stripers in the northeast, and bigeye emperors in Hawaii. 2) Agguato (Italian for “ambush”)–This is a dynamic stalking technique to get closer to prey without being noticed. The diver navigates the bottom using the environment to get closer to the prey. The diver must consider current, visibility and available bottom structure while moving from one object to another, blending into shadows or hiding behind reef formations. If your body can be hidden while closing the gap, the fish will remain unaware of your presence.

Multiple mirrors dangle below a float, and the flashes of light in the water imitate the reflective glare from a school of baitfish. The fish come in to investigate. Chum can be used in combination with a flasher to bring them even closer and keep them interested. In addition to these techniques, serious spearos are likely to train in a pool, use meditation techniques, and do cardio exercises to increase their breath hold capacity. Many take freediving classes to increase bottom time and safety. While there is no certification required to do it, classes should be a pre-requisite, as freediving is a sport that can lead to “blackout” and death if not practiced correctly. Spearfishing is a beautiful, selective way to catch fish, but it is also physically and mentally demanding. Above all, be safe and happy hunting! ver the years, much has been written about the Western North Carolina trout waters of Brevard, Sylva and Cherokee. And for good reason – each of those areas possesses popular waters regularly stocked by the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission. One place that has traditionally flown under the radar is Hendersonville. If you’re looking for a new spot to fish in the North Carolina mountains, or simply prefer fishing less-crowded waters, Hendersonville and Henderson County offer a nice supply of stocked and native streams that are not as well-known. North Mills River is the prime trout fishing venue in Henderson County. The river has a 4-mile section of delayed harvest waters that receives an annual infusion of 11,000 trout from N.C. Wildlife. May is a great time to fly fish the delayed harvest waters of North Mills River because no trout have been harvested since Sept. 30, and it’s designated only for artificial, single-hook lures at that time. Beginning at noon the first Saturday in June and running through Sept. 30, the waters are open to all anglers with no bait restrictions, with a creel limit of seven trout per day. Another nice thing about fishing North Mills River is its location. It is part of the North Mills River Recreation Area of the Pisgah National Forest, which offers camping and miles of wild trout waters, along with hiking trails, biking trails and picnic shelters. North Mills River Campground is open year-round with 31 standard sites, plus one site with full hook-up. There are tent pads, fire pits and bathhouses with hot showers and flush toilets. The campground is adjacent to the delayed harvest section of North Mills River, and also a short drive from the more well-known Davidson River trout waters near Brevard. Other well-kept secrets for fishing in Henderson County are three streams on the eastern side of the county, about 20 to 30 minutes from downtown Hendersonville. Rocky Broad River has a 1.2-mile stretch of hatchery supported waters from Rocky River Lane to the Rutherford County line near Chimney Rock, while Cane Creek, near the Fletcher community, has a 1.5-mile stretch of hatchery supported waters. For those who really want an undiscovered gem, there’s an 8-mile stretch of hatchery-supported waters on Clear Creek, which flows through the hills and valleys of Henderson County’s apple orchards in the shadows of Bearwallow Mountain. Of course, many anglers like to fish secluded areas, while sleeping in more comfortable quarters, and there is no shortage of lodging in Hendersonville. Everything from economy to deluxe hotels, from rental cabins to vacation rentals to bed-and-breakfast inns are available in Hendersonville. And when the fishing is done, Hendersonville provides plenty of options for exploring the outdoors, listening to music, sipping craft beverages and enjoying great meals. DuPont State Recreational Forest lies just southwest of Hendersonville. The forest includes more than 10,000 acres of woods and trails for hiking and biking. The most popular attractions within the forest are waterfalls. Triple Falls has a vertical drop of 120 feet with
three distinct cascades. DuPont’s pristine falls and forests attracted film crews from “Last of the Mohicans” and “The Hunger Games.” An awesome view of the Mills River Valley is available from Jump Off Rock, one of the more easily accessible grand views in the North Carolina mountains. Less than 15 minutes from Hendersonville’s Main Street, Jump Off Rock features a small park leading to a granite rock with spectacular panoramic views of the river valley framed by the Blue Ridge and Great Smoky Mountains. On a clear day, four states—North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Tennessee—are visible from this spot. Hendersonville’s music scene thrives with support from its summer concert series. Music on Main Street brings a live band downtown every Friday night from mid-June to mid-August. The concerts take place on the permanent stage in the Visitor Center parking lot. People kick back in lawn chairs as the sun sets. A classic car show is held each evening in conjunction with the concert. Meanwhile, the Rhythm & Brews concert series combines the local beverage scene with live music once a month from May through September. The concerts take place on the third Thursday and include a variety of music, food, beer, wine and cider. A stroll through the pedestrian-friendly downtown, with its wide, winding sidewalks, reveals bear statues painted by local artists. The Bearfootin’ Art Walk begins in May when 20 bears are placed downtown and concludes with a charity auction in October when the bears find their permanent homes. The abundance of orchards makes Henderson County an ideal location for the emerging hard cider market. Three cideries now operate in the county: Flat Rock Ciderworks on Main Street, Bold Rock Hard Cider in Mills River and Appalachian Ridge Artisan Ciders in a 1940s-era barn-turned-cidery. The Cheers! Trail brings together cideries, wineries and breweries for a countywide tasting experience. Two vineyards produce high-quality wines from European varietals. Burntshirt Vineyards also makes an apple wine. Sierra Nevada’s new state-of-the-art brewery and taproom is a mecca for craft-beer aficionados. Downtown Hendersonville boasts 25 independent restaurants, and several of them offer alfresco dining on the sidewalks. Never Blue, a tapas-style restaurant with worldly flavors, rolls up its garagedoor front on pleasant evenings. Diners enjoy small plate delicacies, creative tacos and decadent desserts. Postero, another Main Street standout, presents New American fare that is both familiar, yet innovative. The chicken and waffles dish is garnished with foie gras maple syrup, and kimchi rémoulade tops the lunchtime burger. The menu changes seasonally and showcases local ingredients. Another downtown hot spot is Mezzaluna, specializing in wood-fired pizzas and homemade pastas. Mezzaluna has a chefdriven menu with Italian influences complemented by a craft beer lineup that is heavy on local labels. Just up the street, Umi serves fresh sushi and sashimi, and several bento boxes for those who want to try a little of everything. Bluefin A State Record
A
n 877-pound bluefin tuna was caught off Oregon Inlet, N.C. on St. Patrick’s Day, March 17. The North Carolina Division of Marine Fisheries recently certified it as a new state record. Retired Army Gen. Scott Chambers of Townsend, Delaware, reeled in the huge fish while fishing aboard Capt. Dennis Endee’s A-Salt Weapon out of Pirates Cove Marina in Manteo, N.C. Chambers battled the fish for 2 ½ hours on 130-pound test line with a Shimano 130 rod and reel. The fish measured nearly 9 ½ feet curved fork length (tracing the contour of the body from the tip of the nose to the fork in the tail), and it had a girth of 79 inches. Regulations dictate that trophy bluefin tuna longer than 73 inches must be released in the Atlantic south of Great Egg Inlet, N.J. after 11:30 p.m. on March 17, 2018. Chambers was hours from having to release his state record catch when it ate a trolled dead bait. Coming in just under the wire, Chambers’ fish crushed the previous recreational state record by 72 pounds. That 805-pound fish was caught in 2011. The all-tackle world record was caught off Nova Scotia in 1979. It weighed 1,496 pounds. Bluefin tuna much larger than this new state record are known to come from North Carolina waters. According to The Outer Banks Voice, a bluefin heavier than 1,000 pounds was caught this winter, but it was sold to a dealer and was not eligible for the record.
