In The Sailfish Capital of the World By Nick Carter

apt. Scott Fawcett didn’t hesitate when asked to make a prediction about sailfish season off Florida’s Treasure Coast. His outlook is extremely bullish. “This is going to be one of the best sailfish seasons we’ve had in a long time,” he said. “By the middle of December, I think we’re going to see the best sailfishing we’ve had in the last 10 years.” Fawcett’s optimism is based on a number of factors he’s followed for more than three decades fishing Florida’s Atlantic Coast. December and January is the historic peak season from Vero south to Palm Beach, Fla. The bite is heavily influenced by winter fronts and the proximity of the Gulf Stream, and everyone is eagerly awaiting strong northeast winds to usher sailfish south to their wintering grounds and closer to shore. Closer to shore isn’t far out of Stuart, Fla., where Fawcett’s Off the Chain fishing charters is based. In an area known as the “Sailfish Capital of the World,” it’s typically a short 8-mile ride in his 4 NATIONAL

32’ Contender “Off The Chain” to reach the color edges and temperature breaks where sailfish hunt. In November, Fawcett’s attention was tuned to fishing reports some 600 miles to the north off the coast of North Carolina. “We had a phenomenal sailfish summer,” he said, speaking of the action that usually goes down from April to June or July most years. “It seems like that body of fish disappeared offshore for a while and then showed up off Morehead City. Last time that happened, we had a fantastic season. I expect to see good numbers of sailfish in December.” With the relatively flat bottom out of Stuart, blind trolling to cover water along the temperature breaks, color edges and reef lines is the preferred tactic. Fawcett pulls a dredge, an umbrella rig of some 30 or 40 baits and lures, to locate and draw in fish. “You’ll see them come up behind the teaser,” Fawcett said. “Then you’ll put your hook baits in front of the fish.”

It’s up to the anglers to manipulate those “hook baits”—usually ballyhoo on a circle hook— in front of the fish. “On a good day, expect five or six sailfish bites and the same amount of dolphin bites and then some bonito or a big kingfish mixed in,” Fawcett said. “Occasionally, we’ll also get a blackfin or a big wahoo while trolling or kite fishing.” Kite fishing out of Stuart requires the right conditions. Sometimes when Fawcett finds a good current rip or color change, he’ll drop the trolling motor and deploy kites and live baits. and I do hope all sportsmen will adhere to the regulations. These swings affect a lot of things like tourism dollars and fishing tournaments. One of the longest-running and best-run rockfish tournaments is the Rockfish Shootout, held at the Oyster Farm on Virginia’s Eastern Shore in December. Gulf Nearshore Heating Up With

Hogs&Tripletail D By Capt. Quinlyn Haddon

ecember on Florida’s Gulf Coast presents unique opportunities to nearshore fishermen, as autumn cold fronts push many species closer to shore. Nearshore fishing is optimal right now, which is great news as weather may prohibit offshore trips. Blackfin tuna will start showing up closer to land than any other time of the year, tripletail will be stacked on crab trap buoys that pepper the beaches, and the hogfish bite is becoming extremely reliable. Crab trap buoys have been soaking along the beaches since October. They have become residences for one of the most interesting fish in the Gulf. Tripletail are visible as dark to golden blobs hanging just below the buoys. While cruising set traps, you can get relatively close without spooking these fish. Be ready with shrimp or greenbacks, and take your time casting; you may only have one shot at it. Once a tripletail notices the hook in your bait, it is not likely to go after it again. If you miss the first shot, make the next cast with a different type of bait. If that also fails, it is time to move on to the next trap and the next fish. Tripletail might also favor different depths on a given day. If you see one, continue along that same line of buoys. Alternatively, if you aren’t finding any, try scooting out to a line of traps in deeper water. Farther offshore, the hogfish are getting fired up. Hogfish fishing grounds can be difficult to locate and might not appear as anything special on your bottom machine. An experienced captain makes finding them a lot easier. If you choose to go it alone, the following tips might help. Hogball jigs are essentially weighted balls with a tiny chain leading to a hook. This is a great tool for catching hogfish that can be replicated

with other rigs. The idea is to have the bait lying on the bottom for these scavengers to find. Shrimp is key to catching hogs, and you can be equally successful with giant live ones or small, stinky defrosted ones. If you choose not to use a hogball, a standard setup with a jighead or a small weight with a short leader will work. The bait should sit on bottom with a little slack. The slack gives hogfish a chance to get the hook in their ridiculous mouths. The bite-tohookup ratio with hogfish isn’t great, so be patient and keep sending down shrimp. You’ll want a landing net when targeting hogfish, as they often come unbuttoned at the surface. They also vary in size, and a net ensures the giant ones get into the boat while the undersized ones are handled gently for release. Capt. By Tom ‘Buzz’ Bzura, West Palm Beach Fishing Club Contributing Writer The venerable West Palm Beach Fishing Club (WPBFC) will again host the ‘World’s Oldest Sailfish Tournament’, the Silver Sailfish Derby on January 6th-9th, 2021. The prestigious offshore tradition attracts some of the best anglers, captains, and crews in the sport to the Palm Beaches each sailfish season. The tournament fleet is limited to 50 boats. Started in 1935, this patriarch played an important role by attracting people from across the country to the Palm Beaches as a way to stimulate tourism and business at a time when the region needed it most, the years following the Great Depression. Its historical significance to our area and longstanding support of billfish conservation have been the Derby’s hallmark. Perhaps the most notable conservation contribution of the Silver Sailfish Derby is the development of the red release pennant. Today, the little red pennant is recognized around the world as a way to signify a sailfish release. The WPBFC began Sail Ahoy with release pennants. flying pennants in 1938 and was the first to promote the use of releases flags. Everything from large sportfish to smaller center console boats will be represented on the water, all rigged to catch and release Atlantic sailfish. The 4-line tournament, headquartered at Sailfish Marina, has teams vying for some of sailfishing’s most coveted awards. The Derby’s top angler award is the Mrs. Henry R. Rea trophy, a magnificent silver sailfish sculpture that dates back to the event’s origin in 1935 and is sponsored by Elizabeth Richebourg Rea of Connecticut. The Rea Trophy remains one of the crown jewels in all of angling. Many awards are

sponsored by families who have been associated with the event for decades. Those who are not fishing the event can follow tournament boat standings on the Derby’s live scoreboard. The Derby scoreboard & photos can be found on the WPBFC website, Instagram & Facebook @westpalmbeachfishingclub.

This has definitely been the craziest and most challenging year of all of our lives. So many have been affected physically and or financially. We have all had to learn to accept disappointment while all sorts of events from graduations to weddings were canceled. Our lives literally turned into something we had only seen in movies. While we fear this virus, there have been some positive things that came out of it. We were forced to slow down, to spend time at home. We taught our children, spent quality time with our loved ones, finished Netflix, organized, took up new hobbies, played games, learned how creative, resourceful and capable we can be, cooked, ate, and ate, and ate some more. We have become more compassionate and involved by caring for our elderly or at risk family, neighbors, and friends; voiced our opinions about inequality and more people than ever voted in the election this year. For a year that we have “lost” we sure have grown and done a lot. This holiday season, we want to thank all of the essential workers, our contributing writers, advertisers, bragboard contributors, our Graphic Designer, our Distributor, and our readers. Without you, our magazine would not have been able to stay afloat. We hope that our monthly publication has brought you some joy and excitement when there was not too much to look forward to. Happy Holidays Anglers! During December we will continue to have cooling air and sea temperatures, providing a much needed break from the heat and causing the offshore bite to fire up. Sailfish season will continue to provide anglers plenty of tail walking, drag screaming action. The sailfish use cold fronts to aid their southerly migration, and their numbers will continue to grow this month as they migrate through our waters. This is the time of the year when anglers from all around the world come to “Sailfish Alley” aka South Florida to target sailfish! If you are looking to catch a sailfish, it is important to pay attention to the wind direction and the barometric pressure. Many anglers believe northerly winds get the sailfish feeding but it is also due to high pressure. The offshore bite will be red-hot with stable high pressure conditions. After a couple days of consistent pressure, you have a good chance of catching this “bucket list” fish so plan accordingly! The bite also turns on before approaching cold fronts and rain, so keep this in mind when planning a fishing trip this month. Last month, we hooked quite a few sailfish slow trolling blue runners. Mahi mahi will also be migrating south from the northern states with the help of cold fronts. The mahi mahi should range from 6-30lbs, with larger fish not uncommon. Blackfin tuna, in the football size range will start to show up as well. Trolling feathers and squid pups between 200-400ft will be your best bet to catch some fresh sushi! The bottom bite should also produce great table fare. During the month mutton snapper, yellowtail snapper, and trigger fish will be the best species to target on the reefs and bottom structures. Live bait or dead sardines will be the bait of choice. Remember, NE winds bring the bait and pelagics closer to shore. Bait will gather at the mouths of inlets and areas with a fast moving current. Hello Anglers, I hope you all have been staying safe and had an amazing month fishing. Sadly, I have not been able to go out on the boat this month, but I did catch my first peacock bass. Chasentailz Navigates COVID

By Summer Warren Contributing Writer Chasentailz Foundation’s annual KDW Tournament was just what the community needed during these unpresented times. Same great tournament, incredible new venue, Tiki52 Bar & Grill, catered to the teams with their fishing village feel and gorgeous location. Everyone was bursting at the seams to get back on the water to compete and feel some normalcy again. The Captains meeting didn’t disappoint with live music by Justin Shapiro, dinner catered by Cheney Brothers & Tiki52, a live auction, and beautiful breezy weather. After a week of high winds, the seas laid down tournament day allowing all 147 teams to compete in the 7th Annual Chasentailz Fishing Tournament. Weigh in was very busy, with professionals to the weekend warriors bringing in their catches as the leader board quickly filled with amazing teams. In the final moments of weigh in Team Tuppens & Team Young Guns battled for overall winner, in the end Team Tuppens won with a 48lb kingfish. Team Barefoot took 3rd place overall winner, a team that has competed almost every year but always came up just short. Congratulations to all the winning teams! Chasentailz KDW has become one of the most anticipated tournaments because it offers teams the best of both worlds, incredible memories made and helping to change the lives of needy families with children battling life threatening illnesses. In 2020 Chasentailz has provided emergency financial assistance to 19 families and funded dinner to 1000’s of families at the Palm Beach Children’s Hospital. Quite a good haul on a day I wouldn’t have gone on my own boat!

It had been blowing hard here in Palm Beach County for two straight weeks making conditions too chancy for me to brave the local inlet in my own craft. Typical Florida winter and I was in desperate need of a fishing fix! I racked my brain for options on the safest way to get out on the water. What about one of the local charter boats? Whether you’re an experienced angler looking for options to get on the fishing grounds or just want to take family and friends for an enjoyable stress-free fishing trip, our local charter boats are just the ticket for enjoyment. Not only will these experts put you on the fish safely, but they will also impart a ton of local knowledge and expertise making your trip a rewarding experience. For my half day of fun, I decided on a local charter captain, Jason Cardinale – a second generation commercial and charter fisherman aboard the Samana. She’s a 42’ Maine built vessel that can handle whatever our notorious Jupiter Inlet can dish out to make an otherwise tough day an enjoyable experience. This is especially relevant during the winter months here on the East Florida coast where it blows most every week. These boats are designed to be both dry and comfortable. If the weather’s too dicey these experienced captains will let you know. I have my own boat — a Worldcat 22’ center console that is extremely seaworthy. Still — there are many days I do not want to brave the inlet but still want to fish. While everyone loves a calm day, sporty weather really lights up the fishery and some of my best outings have been when it’s sporty. For these situations I choose a local charter. The captain booked us for the afternoon trip and timed both weather conditions and tides to find the best slot to get in and out of the inlet. He drove to the inlet beforehand to verify actual conditions. We were perfectly comfortable heading out and boy was I glad we went. Both my friend and I brought top water rods in the hopes of tangling with some mahi and or kingfish. Turned out to be a good decision as the captain allowed us to pitch baits to fish that were cruising by the boat chasing flyers. We loaded up on the tasty and hard fighting mahi and had a blast with plenty of food for the table! On this trip bottom action was a bit slow but the conditions had the mahi fired up and ready to eat. The captain would swing the boat around on each drift and at the top of the reef, do a slow circle before stopping for the drift. This allowed us to get our baits out to where the mahi action was. Between my friend and I we landed close to a dozen mahi while losing five. The rest of the boat had plenty of action as well with a mixed bag of mahi and snapper. Not a bad half day on the water! This kind of local savvy and expertise by the captain and first mate put a lot of tasty fish in the boat. I learned a lot as the mate was always willing to share useful information and answer any direct questions I might have. Charter boats make their money taking smaller groups of anglers – typically just 8 - 10 to the fishing grounds for sometimes nonstop action with local reef dwellers. Fish in season like mutton, grouper, and yellowtail snapper will keep anglers both busy and happy. The boat was run professionally and was definitely kid and spouse friendly! All the patrons were great company, and we all had a fun and rewarding day. And now for a little history on the Samana When prompted on the history of this seaworthy vessel, Captain Jason responded. “The name SAMANA was chosen as a representation of the family name -- SAM in honor of my dad, and ANNA for my mom. The name has been on our boats since I was born. My parents were hard core giant bluefin tuna fisherman in the Northeast during the summers and brought our 38ft boat down to Palm Beach in the winters, fishing for sailfish, mahi, and more. In 2000 we contracted to build our 42ft vessel which was built by Atlantic Boat Company in Maine. It’s a heavy well-built safe boat that fishes well in rough seas. I have grown men who have fished with me since they were five – now they bring their kids. It’s a great feeling to know I have brought positive experiences to their lives.” You can just feel the passion and pride of ownership in this man. This is what makes our local businesses great – Palm Beach has a unique and vibrant culture and fishing is no small part! This time last year most of us in the tourism industry were looking forward to what we’d hoped would be a fantastic 2020. Well, 2020 sure took a different path and brought us all along for the ride too. I don’t know about you, but I am most definitely looking forward to a new and hopefully better year! If there’s one thing that 2020 has forced me to do, it is to slow down. Normally I wouldn’t say that’s a good thing. But in certain respects, slowing down has been…ok. Even needed. 2020 has afforded me the chance to stand back and really look at how Aqua Adventure Tours operates. What works, what doesn’t, what needs to change and how to make those changes happen. A lot of that involves simplifying things and just getting back to basics. For me the best place to think about this kind of stuff is outdoors. I’m lucky that I get to spend a lot of time there, and much of that time is spent on the water. Away from the hubbub and distractions of life of land, being outdoors allows me to concentrate in a way that sitting in an office, or a cube, or an airport never has. Outdoors is where some of my best decisions and some of my favorite memories have been made. If that holds true for you too, I encourage you to get out and explore this month. Yes, December is traditionally one of the busiest months of the year. Yes, it is easy to get overcommitted. Yes, there’s family, friends, work, holidays, events and activities. I know. But…if ever there was a year to find some time or make some time to get yourself outdoors, this is it. December offers endless outdoor and eco-tourism activities here in Palm Beach County. Glorious weather. Beautiful sunsets. Hike an empty trail in the morning. Anchor out and watch the moon come up in the evening. Paddle the Loxahatchee. Explore the mangroves of Lake Wyman. Snorkel a rock reef at high tide. Explore a sandbar at low tide. Go birding along an ocean inlet, or head inland to Wakodahatchee Wetlands. Look for manatees along the Jupiter Lighthouse shoreline, or dolphins along the ocean beaches. Find the time. Make the time. Just get out there. And enjoy! Finally, the weather has changed and with that being said, pelagics will be making their way down the coast to feed on our sweet goggle eyes. The sailfish migration will be on top, but it’s the big dolphin that pique my interest. Monster dollies will be pairing up with sails for better hunting ability. If you hook a sail keep your eye out for partners and good luck! For the anglers looking for the fish of a lifetime, the mighty swordfish will still be around, but we are at the end of the fall run. Picking a calm day will be the hardest part. The finger numbers off Juno have produced some nice fish last month. When swording, don’t be afraid to move around and check out different spots. You have to put your time in to get a good one, or maybe you may just get lucky. Drop deep! Something for the inshore guy - expect good fishing on the cold front days. The inlet will be the place to Expect great dolphin fishing in be. Jacks, Spanish macks, and December... permit will be on the list. Live shrimp or a finger mullet lure will be your best bet. Look for marks on your bottom machine before casting out. Better to search and find them, then to just blind fish. Tight lines!

The 1st Annual Hope Town United Sailfish Tournament kicks off on December 10th through December 12th at Sailfish Marina on Singer Island, Fla. to benefit the community members, the recovery, and restoration efforts on Elbow Cay following the devastation of Hurricane Dorian. Funds raised will go directly to rebuilding the Hope Town Primary School, the ground-up build of the Abaco Community Care Center, and the restoration of homes destroyed by Dorian as a part of Hope Town United’s Homes for Hope program. Since Hurricane Dorian made landfall on September 1st, 2019, Hope Town United has been working tirelessly to provide immediate relief to residents of Elbow Cay. “We are focused on helping the community get back on its feet while facilitating the construction of more resilient homes, businesses, and public buildings, along with an environmentally sustainable infrastructure. Together, we are revolutionizing the way an island can rebuild in the face of natural disasters. Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas to all. Inshore anglers have a plethora of species to target this month of snook, tarpon, pompano, snapper, mackerel, sharks, and many others. Grab your gear or call an expert guide like me and let’s fish. Snook season closes December 15th, but that should not stop anglers from targeting them. Snook fanatics can find stellar action near deep channels, docks, and sea walls. Live bait shrimp, D.O.A. 3 inch Shrimp, and D.O.A. C.A.L. 3 inch Shad in glow gold rush belly, are all great choice baits for enticing strikes. Back bays and canals are great areas to locate snook and it is not uncommon in my area to catch four different species of snook. Nighttime fishing is also a great choice to target snook, & fly fishing offers many strikes and drag screaming action. Tarpon fishing continues to shine, the silver king will be plentiful in bays, canals, and channels. Live bait shrimp and mullet drifted with the tide is the best technique to hook a tarpon; artificial enthusiasts can also get in on the action. A D.O.A. 3 inch Shrimp in glow, D.O.A. TerrorEyz, or a Rapala SubWalk will entice strikes. Typical size of the tarpon ranges from 5 to 50 pounds. Jacks, drum, trout, bluefish, and lady fish all roam the flats and channel edges, look for bait schools or birds in the area helping to locate fish. 2020 is finally coming to an end, but that does not mean your sunny days of catch-andrelease fishing have to! We invite you to kick off winter by reeling in a good time at the Juno Beach Pier. Enjoy some South Florida fishing by catching bluefish on lures and cut bait. Spanish mackerel aren’t too picky and can be caught with any shiny lure or jig. Meanwhile, pompano prefer jigs and live bait such as sand crabs (a.k.a. sand fleas)! Jacks and blue runners have their tastes in common, as they both enjoy shrimp bait in addition to lures. Finally, croakers and whiting can be lured in with small bait including shrimp, crabs, cut squid, and cut fish. As part of Loggerhead Marinelife Center’s Responsible Pier Initiative, the Juno Beach Pier practices sustainable fishing and recycling. The pier encourages anglers and spectators to dispose of used monofilament lines in the designated recycling containers and report any accidentally hooked sea turtles. INSHORE: The first couple of cold fronts have pushed through the area. With these fronts some new inshore species start to show up. With the next couple fronts start to look for pompano and bluefish to be roaming the flats and channels. Places like Hobe Sound and the mouth of the Loxahatchee River in Jupiter are great places to check for activity. For pompano I love using a D.O.A. Shrimp in the potholes on the flats and edges of the channels. For bouncing the bottom of channels, a Goofy Jig or Bucktail Jig will do the trick for both pompano and bluefish. Just because the weather has become cold don’t think your redfish, snook and trout have shut down. Try fishing a little later in the day so the water has a chance to warm up and target sand holes and muddy bottom areas. These holes will warm up faster than surrounding areas. OFFSHORE: The mahi fishing should be going well up and down the coast. Live mullet and goggle eyes will intrigue these guys to have a snack. You can run circle hooks or stinger rigs if you don’t want to miss out on the king and possible wahoo bites. These cold fronts will continue to bring in the mahi and sailfish throughout the winter. Brave the wind and waves and you should hook into a few fish. FRESHWATER: December is my favorite time of year to target peacock bass. With the colder temps these fish start to school up and catching bigger numbers of fish becomes more common. Live shiners and jerk bait lures like a Yo-Zuri 3D Twitchbait will fool a few fish. ROAD TRIPFISHING By Keith Lozott Contributing Writer If you’re a product of the Greek system at a university, you’re probably thinking I’m about to talk about a trip with a bunch of Zeta girls!!! While that was only a young college man’s dream (especially since I was an independent); the real premise of the story is our annual trip to Louisiana that was cancelled due to hurricane Zeta. We were fired to go, anticipating the opportunity to cast at cruising redfish in the marsh swimming down a shallow creek bed or drain, (trenasse: a trail in the marsh that will lead one to the best fishing). We were on our WhatsApp chat every day talking junk at one another, ribbing back and forth about the upcoming trip and out of nowhere the news comes in that the seventh storm to put the trip in jeopardy is on its way. We stayed positive hoping it wouldn’t be cancelled. The storm was only supposed to be a tropical storm or a weak Cat 1 at worst, so we stayed on course to go. Well that all went up in smoke as the storm intensified into a Cat 2, boasting winds of 110 mph with a forward cruising speed of 25 mph and went directly over Delacroix causing some serious damage. The lodge had been hit, the power was out, the marina was compromised, and the boat house roof was blown off. The owner of the lodge called and told me that all in all, it wasn’t that bad. It sounded bad to me but as always there is a silver lining to every story. The house would be fixed soon and if the power was back on, we could probably use it as is. Well this time of year Delacroix can have some cool weather come in so we decided to wait until the place had power restored to try and rebook the trip. Scrambling, I organized the crew and set a date for December 5-11 and by the time you’re reading this we will have come and gone. None of us have fished Delacroix in December and being from Florida, cold weather fishing rarely happens. That being said, the average December temperature in Delacroix is 65-45 degrees and that is freezing for us. We immediately went into research and development mode and found the fishing is supposed to great in December. The trout bite is supposed to be really hot and close to camp. The main targeted species, “BIG REDFISH” come into the marsh to get warm and eat for the winter and you don’t have to wake up early to top it off. Hopefully good things come to those who wait! LAKEOKEECHOBEE By Capt. Nate Shellen Contributing Writer Cooler temperatures will trigger many different changes on Lake Okeechobee. After reaching the high to mid-eighties during the summer, the water temperatures have fallen into the high to mid-seventies. This cooler water triggers longer feeding periods in general. The large trophy sized female bass that make themselves scarce during the summer months suddenly appear on the outside grass lines stalking the Jim and Tom from Ocala caught these giants at massive schools of baitfish that have hatched out during the summer. Along with the same time on different sides of the boat. the big females, all the bass in the lake are in a feeding frenzy as they eat to prepare for the long spawning season. There are numerous patterns that will work for catching fall bass. It’s a great time to catch bass on a top-water bait. With the many styles, colors, and sizes of top-water plugs, it is difficult to pinpoint what really works best. My experience has been that the bait an angler cast and works with the most confidence, is the most successful for that angler. One of my favorite lures is Pop-R’s which has a cupped face that throws water and imitates a fleeing shad. A Bang-o-Lure is a very old bait but still performs quite well. It has props that throw a shower of water as you retrieve it. Then too is a Zara Spook Jr. that features a walking type action that drives fish crazy at given times. There are literally hundreds of different baits available and they all will catch bass in the right situation. Knowing what color and action to use in certain situations is a skill that is acquired by tying a bait on and making enough casts that you become proficient with it. Spinnerbaits, soft plastics, and lipless crankbaits all have their place in the boat and will all draw strikes in the right time frame. Being able to read the cover and having the imagination to use the right bait with the correct presentation is a skill that is learned from putting in long hours on the water. Fishing with a more accomplished angler is a great way to learn new skills and perhaps widen your understanding of reading the cover you are fishing. The best anglers in the world are those that are able to adapt to any situation and still catch fish. As fall progresses the bass will form into large schools and move about the Lake following either the baitfish or responding to the moon phases. Okeechobee is blessed that our bass do not all spawn at the same time, waves of bass will move in to feed up and them spawn from mid-October through the end of April or May. What this means is that at any one time we have bass that are in pre-spawn mode, bass that are actively spawning at this time, and then there are bass that have already spawned and are ravenous from the rigors of spawning. The long spawning “season” is the thing that separates Lake Okeechobee from all other bass fisheries in the USA. This fall has already started out with a bang with 4 fish over 9 pounds between early October and November. In addition to world-class bass fishing, the town of Okeechobee offers great amenities for the anglers and their families. ON THE RANGE By Chuck Papp, Contributing Writer The big question for everyone at this time of year is...what do I get them for Christmas? The answer is simple, anything in here will work just fine. We aren’t picky when it comes to anything shooting or hunting related. You may walk into that gun store or hunting department of your local big chain store not feeling comfortable or may not even like it, but to us its heaven. I cannot think of a single item ever gifted to me from one of these places that I didn’t want or couldn’t use. A simple box of ammunition or 2, you can never have too much of that. Cleaning supplies are great stocking stuffers. You can buy a couple of cans of cleaner or even a whole kit. Range bags or single cases are great ideas. Everyone needs something to put their treasures in. A new hunting jacket or boots is always a good gift. Those items wear out, so a backup set is nice to have. A magazine subscription to an outdoor or shooting publication is also great, a new issue every month and it lasts All-in-one tool all year. My all-time favorite is a new knife or a multi tool, I’ve never known any outdoors person who wouldn’t appreciate one. There are many options out there for that hunter or shooter in your life. Don’t be afraid to come on in, we are generally a very helpful bunch and will direct you to what you are looking for.

This trip was a few days after a cold front, and the air and water had begun to warm. Being late fall, the tide had not dropped drastically, as it does when winter takes grip on the bay and chills and lowers the water significantly. This area was a soft bottom covered with grass and scattered potholes. My feet would sink half way up my foot and occasionally ankle deep. The water was very clear, and the wind was blowing into the shore. The mud bottom combined with clear shallow water made this the ideal location for the water to be a few degrees warmer than the surrounding area. The entire area was not more than 1 1/2 to 2 feet deep. This shore also had the key ingredient, active bait in the form of mullet. Due to the depth of the water and the abundance of sea grass, my lure needed to be weedless. This ruled out big trout lures with treble hooks. Even a modified dangling single hook would foul with a few cranks of the reel. There was also floating grass to contend with, and my single-hook topwaters were not enticing strikes, despite all the fishy signs being there. Since the water temp was cool and the fish somewhat lethargic, I slowed my approach and presentation. Rigging a slow-sinking soft-plastic paddletail on a 1/16-ounce weedless weighted hook gave the desired presentation. The action I utilized was as simple as it gets, and one that is frequently overlooked. Long casts were key due to the clear water and wary eyes of larger trout. Fan casting to cover 180 degrees ensured I did not miss any opportunities. By Capt. Michael Okruhlik This also allowed me to bring my lure through the cover at differing angles in relation to the wind, current and sun angle. The retrieve was a simple reel and pause. A few cranks of the reel handle fluttered the paddletail; a pause allowed the lure to slowly descend from a few inches under the surface to the top of the grass or sand if it was over a pothole. e’ve all experienced the mid-day slowdown, when a hot morning bite tapers off into nothing more than a boat ride. There’s a pretty simple explanation for this lull after the early morning feeding period. It’s right above our heads; it’s the sun! Fish don’t have Maui Jims… or even eyelids. Anything with a big eye, like wahoo or tuna, uses water depth to regulate the amount of light that reaches them. The fish haven’t stopped feeding. They’ve retreated to depths where they are more comfortable. It’s the reason why the planer rod is many times the only rod working during the middle of the day. That rod is attached to the only bait you’ve got down deep. There’s no rule that says you have to use ballyhoo and/or keep the trolling speed at 6 or 7 knots. Here’s a little tip I learned from another captain that has proven deadly during the mid-day lull. Try this on for size: Slow down significantly and put a couple big natural baits down on a downrigger. Ballyhoo are the trolling bait of choice for good reason. Ballyhoo are responsible for more trolling fish than all other baits combined. They are not, however, a naturally occurring baitfish everywhere. You know what is a natural forage item everywhere? Squid! It is the bait that is down deep where the fish are, and it is a bait they eat. I’ve said it many times, “Don’t go to a Chinese restaurant and order a pizza.” Well, squid are like General Tso’s chicken when fish dive to escape the glaring sun. On the downrigger with release clips, set one squid at 50 feet and another at 100 feet deep. One or both of them are all but certain to get a bite. Catching fish while all the other boats are just riding is

fun, and another thing I like about this style of fishing is it lightens up the tackle considerably. Instead of winching a wahoo to the boat on the planer rod, you can use your stand-up tackle very effectively. I know what you’re thinking… “Squid are so dang difficult to rig, and they are not readily available in the size I need.” Think again! Surf Casting Against The Wind O

ne factor to consider when surf casting is the wind. Recent tropical storms and weather conditions have made fishing on the beach difficult. The winter months at the beach are notoriously windy; so what do you do? There are a couple strategies. If there’s an easterly wind, with the wind in your face, it makes casting harder, so you need heavier weight. I usually use a 3/8-ounce jig or a ¾-ounce spoon, but against a strong wind I’ll add weight and go with a ½-ounce to ¾-ounce jig or a 2-ounce Crocodile spoon. If the breakers are 150 yards out and the water is churning, you need to reach the cut where the fish are. On low tide, sometimes you need to get in the water and get wet. The fish are not able to feed in the trough near the shore, and you need to get your lure out to them. In rough water, I favor a slow, steady retrieve because the fish have a hard time finding your lure in the churning froth. Unless you see bait and feeding fish, keep the lure near the bottom and work it slowly. Remember, no matter the weather, fish are there and they are feeding… maybe just a little farther from the first cut. Here on the Treasure Coast, there are always plenty of snook on the beach, and they get shallow no matter the weather. Until the water temperature drops to the mid-70s there will be snook action. The coldwater fish like bluefish, pompano, mackerel and jack are active all winter long and can be taken on jigs in the surf. Pompano like deeper water, so casting for them in the ocean is impractical. Fishing the bridges in the Indian River Lagoon is much easier. Around the inlets (Ft. Piece; St. Lucie; Jupiter) there are places you can fish where you don’t have to cast directly into the wind. When you go around the bend at Bathtub Beach, you can get the wind out of your face and have it on your left side and eventually at your back as you go around the bend. Remember, the lagoon is accessible in heavy wind, and any 20 mph wind, whether east or west, can be fished by fishing the side with the wind at your back. There are also protected areas like bridges and coves. You can fish these when there’s a mostly north or south wind. Put on your waders and fish the side of the lagoon with the wind mostly to your back. As always, fish the rising and falling tides and find places in the lagoon where the wind isn’t so strong. In the Western Panhandle Zone, from Escambia County through portions of Gulf County, harvest will close for the month of February 2021. Spotted seatrout, red drum and snook remain catch-and-release only through May 31, 2021 in waters from the Hernando/Pasco county line south through Gordon Pass in Collier County. This is a proactive change to conserve spotted seatrout impacted by red tide in southwest Florida. While the red tide has subsided, the fishery needs time to recover. he year is winding down. Holiday season is here—a time for giving gifts and making resolutions. It would be great to tap into this spirit and close out this covid-marred year on a high note. I’d like to offer a suggestion to all you divers out there about how to do just that. Since mid-year, as covid restrictions began to ease, the South Florida dive industry has been working hard toward recovery. Many changes have been made to address health concerns, and most dive operators are up and running. If you live near good diving, a resolution to “dive local” will certainly speed their recovery. As you familiarize yourself with local sites, consider making a second resolution. Try adding a volunteer “citizen science” component to your diving! There are many ways you can do this, but what could be better than channeling your efforts into improving your diving environment? Since 2011, Project Aware has been running its noteworthy Dive against Debris program. Eight million tons of trash enter the ocean each

year, with upwards of 70 percent of that ending up on the bottom. Out of sight, out of mind. But that’s where most SCUBA divers spend their time, so who better to enlist as volunteers in addressing the problem? This unique program not only runs underwater clean-ups, but also carefully catalogs the “what, when and where” of everything collected. Its results are impressive. Although the covid outbreak has disrupted both the collection and recording of data, the program is currently closing in on 2-million pieces of debris retrieved globally—quite a feat for an allvolunteer effort. The heavy emphasis on collecting data—amount, category, type, location and date—is essential in helping get the problem under control. Identifying patterns at sites over time helps identify potential sources of the offending material—a necessary step in ultimately eliminating, or at least controlling them. To be useful for scientific analysis, the data must be carefully collected and reported in a consistent manner. Dive Against Debris’ website (www. projectaware.org/diveagainstdebris) provides a host of information on what is required. In Palm Beach County, Pura Vida Divers bundles this helpful information into the PADI Dive Against Debris specialty course. You will learn how to conduct a Dive Against Debris survey and how to identify, report and dispose of what you collect. Then, use that knowledge on more dives! BLUE CAT CRUSHES GEORGIA RECORD

Florida man fishing Georgia’s Chattahoochee River caught a 110-pound, 6-ounce blue catfish Oct. 17. The monster blue cat crushed the existing state record by more than 17 pounds. Tim Trone, of Havana, Fla., was fishing the Chatt Kat tournament out of Florence Marina on the upper end of Lake Eufaula when he caught the monster fish. He had run way up the river south of Columbus, Ga., and dropped baits in about 50 feet of water when the giant catfish picked up a piece of cut bream Trone was using for bait. Surprisingly, the fish didn’t put up much of a fight. “I reeled it up like a 100-pound log,” Trone told a reporter from the Tallahassee Democrat. “It was just a little bump. It took about three minutes to reel it in.” Trone’s blue catfish bested the previous record of 93 pounds, which has stood since 2017. That fish was caught on the Altamaha River in southeast Georgia. The current IGFA all-tackle world record weighed 143 pounds. It was caught on Virginia’s Kerr Lake.
