t’s snook season in Florida, and despite a closure to harvest for much of the state’s west coast, the next couple months offer great action in the world’s best location to target the state’s most iconic inshore/ nearshore gamefish. Snook strike aggressively, fight hard and grow large—into the 20and 30-pound range of true slob snook. The Florida state record weighed 45.75 pounds. It was caught by Heather Lynn Conners near Sebastian in 2015. But even the slot fish—those in the 28- to 33-inch range you’re allowed to keep one of—will test your gear. It’s one of the most explosive and exciting gamefish on the planet. Snook are extremely temperature sensitive, and tactics vary according to the season. From the beaches and nearshore, where they spend their summers, they will move over the next few months seeking warmer water in sheltered winter haunts. First, you’ll find them in deep water adjacent to the shallow flats. Then, driven by cooling sea temps, they’ll push all the way up into the creeks and rivers, residential canals, warm water discharge from power plants, upper estuaries, and anywhere they can find suitable water conditions. The harsher the winter, the more pronounced the move. Fall through winter is the time when big, line-snapping snook will hunker down in areas that might seem highly unlikely to the uninformed. With the mild winters of the last decade, much has been made of the northward spread of snook. A tropical species, they historically thrived only on the southern coasts of Florida, up to about to about Sebastian in the Atlantic and Tampa in the Gulf. However, in recent years, snook have set up shop farther north, in areas that would have been unheard of a decade ago. These days, it’s possible to target snook at Homosassa and farther north along the Nature Coast of the Gulf and up toward Jacksonville in the Atlantic. They have also shown up much farther north. This summer, Coastal Angler Magazine reported on a juvenile snook caught in a cast net way up in Winyah Bay, South Carolina. First timers seeking to do battle with snook should hire a captain. Along with being big and strong, large female snook are notoriously smart and usually require specialized tackle, techniques and a good deal of patience. Their tendency to hole up in the structure of mangroves, rocks and bridge and pier pilings makes break-offs common, and the expertise of a good guide increases your chances of actually landing one. The good news is, snook have been relatively unmolested by anglers during the closed season of the last three months. Now is as good a time as any to fool a big cow nosed into the current under some residential canal dock. They feed best in low light of the early mornings and late evenings when there’s a rising or falling tide. The stronger tides around the new and full moons are optimal for catching them. Keep that in mind when booking your trip to Florida’s snook fisheries, and you could find yourself experiencing the fishing trip of a lifetime.

made my cast; the fly dropped just on the edge of the light shining into snook-filled water. I could see my fly tracking nearly perfectly as it passed in front of several nice fish waiting for unsuspecting prey. Then the fly swam into darkness without a glance from the linesiders. I continued stripping so as to pick the fly up and cast again. Suddenly my line came tight. I made the strip-set to an explosion, as a 3-foot tarpon erupted from the water, crashing into the dock and throwing my fly amidst a shower of scales and water. That night changed my thoughts on fly fishing forever.
When it comes down to it, sight fishing is the way to go for me. Unfortunately, I don’t have the luxury of a guide to pole me around the flats of Marco Island, but I have found that at night the docks hold all kinds of fish from snook to tarpon, snapper to trout, and they usually are open to feeding on a fly. Of course there are some things to keep in mind. First, stealth is everything. I like to approach using my electric motor and make sure I keep my distance. Many fish will hang at the edge of the light in the shadows, as was the case of that tarpon. In fact, I’ve caught many just out of the shadows at night. Boat position is also critical. You need to be far enough away to not spook any of the fish, seen or unseen. You also need a good casting angle to the fish. That means getting your fly in front of them and having it work past them in a natural way. I’ll use the electric motor to keep me in position. This also gives me the advantage of moving away from the dock when a large fish is hooked and trying to pull me into barnacle-covered pilings. When there are a lot of fish present, I often anchor or stake up to let things settle. It also gives me time to retie leaders between fish. Now that you are in position, what do you use? A majority of my fish have been caught on a white Clouser. All-black Clousers create a highly visible silhouette and are deadly, as well. Either emulates the ever-present glass minnows. Of late, I’ve upped the size of my flies and have found that larger baitfish patterns with bigger profile often get seen easier and thus get more takers. Above all, be respectful. When you find someone kind enough to leave those fish-attracting lights on, always do the right thing. Never go on the dock, and keep quite. Much of this fishing is done late at night, and dock owners who turn their lights off will tell you it’s because of noisy fishermen. FLORIDA SCALLOP REPORT: PASCO COUNTY DOMINATES

S
calloping season is a big deal on Florida’s Gulf Coast. Every year during short and carefully managed seasons, divers and snorklers are set free to harvest these tasty little morsels along a nearly 800mile stretch of coastline in state waters from Gulf County to Pasco County. Beginning in July and stretching through September, the open season dates vary across five regions determined by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. Some years, picking up a limit of bay scallops out of grassy shallows is as easy as an Easter egg hunt. This summer many scallopers were asking, “Where are the scallops?”

The normally predictable Crystal River and Homosassa scallop grounds weren’t as predictable or productive this year as in years past. Some reports indicate the bulk of productive scallop grounds in those areas were in exceptionally deep waters this year. Experts explain that the normal west to easterly storms that drive scallops into easily accessible shallow waters did not occur this year. But wait; News Flash, scallops certainly showed up on the southern end of the state’s scalloping waters. In Pasco County, Fla.—the region aptly known as Florida’s Sports Coast—our editors quickly limited out in 3 feet of water and found these waters to be exceptionally productive at every drop. Whether it was the 25-year harvest closure or favorable currents, Pasco County’s limited open season was a must-dive on Florida’s west coast this year. The 2019 season marked the second year in a row that FWC opened the scallop season for Pasco County, and nature certainly supported the decision. Proving to be an unbeatable destination for bay scallops—as evidenced in fistfuls—Florida’s Sports Coast’s rich scallop beds turned out to be the perfect place to score the tasty saltwater bivalves. It is very exciting to see what Pasco County’s continued seasons have in store. In anticipation of continued growth in popularity with the returned underwater adventure, Pasco County Parks, Recreation and Natural Resources is concentrating efforts to expand and improve county boat ramps to provide more trailer parking and better launch experiences for both local and out-of-town scallopers. Moving forward, Pasco County’s annual scallop season will start the third Friday in July and last for 10 days. 2019 LIONFISH
CHALLENGE UPDATE
I
n mid-August, FWC released an update on its 2019 Lionfish Challenge, and the numbers are pretty impressive. Since the event opened with Lionfish Removal and Awareness Day on May 18, 304 people had registered for the challenge and 127 had submitted harvested lionfish (113 recreational, 14 commercial). A total of 15,367 lionfish had been removed from Florida waters. The Lionfish Challenge rewards lionfish harvesters with prizes for their lionfish removals. This year, participants who submit the largest and smallest lionfish may be eligible to receive up to $3,000 in cash prizes thanks to support from sponsors: American Sportfishing Association, Yamaha Motor Company, Marine Industries Association of Palm Beach County and National Marine Manufacturers Association. All qualified participants (submission of 25 lionfish or 25 pounds for commercial) will be entered in drawings. he fishing report from northwest Costa Rica is smokin’ hot. The FishingNosara team ran 70 trips in July and was in peak form during the white-hot month of August. The team scored several sweet marlins, backed up with 41 sailfish releases and 104 yellowfin tunas. They were pumped to report that multiple 100-plus-pound yellowfins have been caught recently. These mega-fish come around every summer, but this year the team perfected the tackle and tactics to bring in the biggest of the bunch. These monster yellowfin tuna catches break the Internet every time we post photos. panga Adventurer has the fishing tool of a boat twice her size and a big bad attitude to match. This season we added a bottom machine, live tuna tuba and outriggers. In late July, cubera snappers were the headliners of a haul that also included yellowfin and a few roosterfish releases. Capt. Fico on the Explorer has earned his nickname of El Brujo (the witch) by conjuring big fish for his clients. Yellowfin tunas are always a staple this time of year, but a big surprise is the presence of big dorados. Either they are early arriving or lingering from the spring. Adding variety to the filet bag were big red groupers, which are amazing to eat and fun to catch. Some folks plan their Costa Rica fishing trip months in advance, but others walk into the office on a whim and book a trip for that day, as did angler Bradley Goss. Capt. Alex on the Harvester delivered the goods for this Oklahoma angler in the form of a 190-pound yellowfin tuna. The Marlin action was intense on the 32-footers Wanderer and Discoverer. Bob Templeton turned in the performance of a lifetime on July 9; Capt. Carlos reported two marlin releases on the big battleship Discoverer. They scored another amazing blue marlin release on July 10 with angler Michael Bosse and his crew. Then San Antonio angler Jim Jordan got a massive marlin release they scored on July 12. That’s four marlin releases in a three-day span. It is no exaggeration that Capt. William and the Wanderer ran more trips last year than any boat in all of Central America. Jacksonville angler David Sohm and his group scored a triple dorado hook-up, with a combined haul of 120 pounds. That’s a lot of mahi filets! Also, angler Mark Wing and his family scored the fish-of-a-lifetime on July 19, with Master Capt. William releasing a blue marlin. HOW TO PICK A HOOK

T
oday’s anglers are the beneficiaries of great strides made in hook manufacturing over the last few decades. Besides being sharper and stronger than they were in generations past, hooks are now available in a wider range of styles than ever before. But with variety comes the need to choose, and many fishermen are unable to comb through the multitudes of hooks to find the one that best suits their needs. If you are one of those anglers who could use a little guidance when it comes to hook selection, this primer will help you sort through the hook hoopla to find the right hook for the job. The first decision is whether you should be using circle hooks or J-hooks. Circle hooks don’t need the manual hookset that J-hooks require, but they also aren’t very effective on fish that tend to nibble at bait. If you fish for nibblers such as sheepshead, blackfish or bluegills, then circles aren’t for you. There is also the reality that circle hooks tend not to set if the fish sits still after swallowing the bait, so don’t use them unless you are fishing in a current or the fish are in an active mood. J-hooks do a better job on fish that move around less. Shank length is an underrated but critical factor in hook selection. Fish with cavernous mouths—such as largemouth bass and snook—should never be pursued using short-shank hooks. With hook eye and point being nearly in the same plane, the two parts can interfere with each other on the hookset, making them a poor choice for fish that have a gentle curvature to their mouth. These hooks do well on fish with narrow, beak-like mouths, such as tuna and wahoo, but they should be avoided when targeting anything with a wide mouth. Many of these hooks are marketed simply as “live-bait hooks,” but if your target has a big mouth, your hook should not have a short shank. Your hook size should match the bait you are using in a way that is conducive to natural presentation. A giant 10/0 hook won’t get many strikes if your bait is a three-inch shrimp; a 2/0 beak or octopus hook is probably a better match. The hook should be big and strong enough to hook and hold your target fish, but not so big that it inhibits the movement of your bait. Many specialty hooks have features made for specific baits and methods of fishing. Hooks with baitholder barbs are great for holding softer baits such as clams and worms. Hooks with up-turned or down-turned eyes are great if you prefer to snell hooks rather than attach them via a knot above the eye. Pay attention to the design of the hooks you select, because each style was made with a precise goal in mind. Whatever hook you choose, always make sure it is razor sharp before you begin fishing.

Hello anglers! September is our pivotal month between summer and fall. We’ll have many inshore and offshore opportunities this month. Water temps will still be hot, but we should see some relief in air temperatures at times, especially late in the month. Bay: The trout and redfish bite should be getting better throughout the day. Watch those tides and try to catch it while it’s moving. Live baits, top-water plugs, gold spoons, and soft plastics will all produce in the shallows this month. If you haven’t fished your honey hole in a while, I suggest bringing all of the above. No matter what type of fishing I’m doing, I always bring a mixed arsenal. Deeper bay structures will be holding many redfish, mangrove snapper, black sea bass, and several others. You can’t beat a live shrimp on a slip sinker rig to explore what’s lurking. Small baitfish and various crabs will produce bites as well around docks and rocks. GULF: This is one of the best months for near surface pelagics. King mackerel will be hot and heavy. Mahi, bonito, black fin tuna and a few others will be moving and feeding aggressively. Trolling diving plugs and duster rigged cigars will be successful for many. If you see birds bombig on the surface, toss a live bait or a jig into it and have some fun. Bottom fishing will be great! Most large Amberjack will be further offshore, however if you have the guts and the patience to send a big blue runner down, you have a shot on any reef. Grouper will be top notch target this month. Live sand perch, pinfish, cigar minnows, and big slabs of fresh cut bait are the ticket. Rig strong and be ready for that first pull! Grouper ambush feed; they shoot out of their hole, grab your bait, and run right back home. Surf: Pompano, whiting , and redfish will be patrolling the beaches. Shrimp, crabs and sand fleas are the ticket. As always in the hot months, random casting of spoons and Gotcha Plugs will yield Spanish mackerel, bluefish, and lady fish. There will be no shortage of sharks in the surf. Big fresh cut baits will certainly get your line pulled. Thanks for reading folks. Fish on! Capt. Backcountry / Bay / Inshore:
It’s a great time of year to be fishing in the bay and it will get better every day. There’s less pressure, fewer crowds and temps are dropping a bit in the mornings and evenings. This happens to be the best time to be working the grass flats for trout and red fish; they are starting to feed even harder for the next couple of months to fatten up for the cold months. Live bait is your best bet, but always try casting your favorite top-water lure. Soft plastics and suspending lures work well too, especially when it gets hotter. Focus on docks, potholes, and channels near the grass flats. Flounder can also be found in those pot holes and ledges as they make their way toward the pass. Use bull minnows , finger mullet, or soft plastic jigs fished on the bottom. Mangrove snapper and sheepshead are holding on most structure in the bay, from the jetties to docks in the bays, and they’ll take live shrimp and small minnows, as well as cut bait. On the beach, there are some redfish and
offshore:
Amberjack season is still open and they’re plentiful. Cigar minnows, pin fish, and mullet work great but they will eat frozen cut bait almost as well; horizontal jigging also does a great job. Lots of gag grouper and red snapper are being landed but red snapper must be released. Other types of grouper and snapper, including some big mangrove snapper, are being reported as well as red grouper and scamp. Check any weed lines or floating debris for dolphin and triple tail. Have a light tackle rod already set up so you’re prepared. Don’t forget that there are always a few cobia hanging around the wrecks so be ready!

Maybe, just maybe, it will cool down a little this month making conditions a bit more pleasant for anglers, but water temps will change little from the summer heat…and hot it was in August! Unless we get unseasonably high amounts of rain, the levels should remain perfect, like they were last month. The same summer patterns will continue to produce bites so if you get an early start, be sure to throw a Bagley Bang-O-Lure tight to wood on the main river. Flowing water will still be the place to look for hungry bass. Target the small pockets of still water around and behind big timber and stumps and give this bait time to settle after the cast. Short erratic twitches will get big bass to come up and eat it, and there isn’t a more fun way to get bites. These same areas are also prime spots to pitch a Texasrigged creature, craw or worm. Use a heavy weight in strong current and a lighter one in still waters. I usually use dark colors, like black or junebug, when the water is muddy and more neutral colors like green pumpkin in clear water. Don’t be afraid to rig a large worm or C-note with a stud Apalachicola river bass. craw. River bass will pounce on a big Gambler Burner Worm or Mega Daddy Craw and it will reduce the number of pesky bream bites. Spinnerbaits will, as always, be a mainstay for getting bites. Pinpoint your casts toward leading edges of logs and use the current to let it flutter down along the underside. This is where bass lay in ambush and the action of a spinnerbait here is just plain hard for them to resist when presented properly. On the upper stretches of the river a square-bill crankbait will be hard to beat. Try casting one in the eddies created by bridges, rock weirs and other structures. Usually a shad or crawfish pattern will do best so don’t over-think color selection. Good fishing and God bless.

Sun Protection
O
f all the Pro’s Corner tips we’ve shared in these pages, this one is perhaps the most important because it may literally save your life. This summer has been a hot one! You’ve spent a lot of time on the water and outdoors and summer is not over yet. This is our way of life in Florida, but the problem is that the sun is a killer! Here’s the “why.” Skin cancer affects a staggering number of people each year…check the stats for yourself. No one is exempt from the sun’s damage. You have a one in five chance to develop melanoma and every hour someone dies from it. I think it’s safe to say that the outdoorsy types, like us, especially
those in this type of climate, rank as a higher risk. The good news in sun protection is that the “how” is as easy to understand as the “why.” Most everyone uses some form of sunscreen or block and that’s a good first step…I suggest a high SPF. Where I think many fall short on protection is in failing to cover up properly. The thought of long sleeve shirts and pants to most seems miserable in this heat. The truth is, when you cover up with the correct technical gear designed to protect and cool, you’ll find yourself more comfortable than with exposed skin…I know I do. When it is detected and treated in its early stages, the chances for long-term, disease-free survival are excellent! Perform a self-exam and apply the ABCDE rule. This
is an acronym for the general guidelines used to identify an atypical mole or melanoma based on the following features: A. asymmetry, B. irregular border, C. multiple or unusual color, D. large diameter, and E. evidence that the mole is evolving. DESTIN / Choctawhatchee BAY September kicks off my favorite time of year to go fishing! We’ll start to get a few cooler days and nights, and fishing in general gets better and better as each day passes. There’s just nothing better than waking up early on a Saturday morning, making a drift along a grass flat, and listening to the pregame college football talk on the radio while casting a top-water lure.
Inshore: As we start to get a few cooler nights, the trout and redfish bite will start to get good on the grass flats. If you find schooling mullet, there are usually a few redfish and even a few trout mixed in with them. Try casting gold spoons or soft plastics around the tail end of the schools. The early mornings or late evenings are the best times to find the fish, especially on the flats. As the sun gets higher, move towards the bayous and try deeper water docks and bridge pilings by fishing live shrimp, menhaden, etc., on the bottom. One thing you always need to prepare for this time of year is running across a school of big jack crevalle; they’ll feed on big schools of mullet. You’ll know when you see it because it causes quite the disturbance in the water. Try throwing a top-water hard plastic lure at them and make sure you work it fast. The black snapper bite has been good all month and should continue to be good. Most people are catching them around the bridges and jetties toward the mouths of the passes. Get as close to the pilings as possible and use live shrimp with small #1 hooks and a split shot; fish for them almost the same way you’d fish for sheepshead in the winter. Offshore/Nearshore:
The gulf has been a tough bite as of late but getting better every day. Bait has been tough to find and the fish are just not cooperating like they should. Hopefully this water will clean up and we’ll start to get back to our normal style of fishing. A lot of people are running down the beach a few miles to find bait right now. If you go and the water is clean around the pass, then

you’ll have a good shot at finding them around the bars and buoys. But if the water is dirty when you get out, try running down and looking for them on top. The king mackerel bite has been pretty good this past month. Most people that are catching good numbers are running off towards the southwest edge, but you can still find fish in close. To make a day out of it, you’ll need to get some baits down deeper to get more bites from kings and amberjack and having a down rigger is a big plus. On the inshore wrecks within 10 miles of the pass you’ll find good numbers of amberjack. Most of them are just short of being keeper fish, but they’re an absolute blast to catch on light tackle. If you get into a bunch of them, you can usually come up with a couple keeper-size fish. Try downsizing your tackle, using 50- to 60-lb fluorocarbon leader, and you’ll get a lot more bites that way. The grouper bite has been decent, but should get better this month. Most people are fishing 180- to 250-feet of water to get

into the good ones. So if you find a pretty day, try running off a little deeper than you normally would. Be prepared with bigger weights in case the current is strong. Not having a sufficient amount of weight to get the bait down where it needs to be is one of the biggest issues people run into, and it’s an easy fix. Some of the best blue water fishing all year is in the month of September. Some of the best fishing is in shallower water around the Nipple and the Elbow. There weren’t a ton of blackfin tuna seen, but that’ll change soon. There was a ton of bait stacked in those areas, and a few whales were seen as well; this is always a great sign. When you think of September billfish you usually always think of white marlin, but the sailfish and blue marlin bite has been just as hot; numerous boats caught multiples of each. One of the best ways to target these fish is using a method that’s been around forever and is starting to catch on up here in the panhandle, it’s called dredging. People using dredges have seen

their fish numbers almost double. You can rig artificial dredges which work very good, but for the ultimate teaser, a rigged mullet or ballyhoo dredge works wonders. They do cost a little more money to build and rig, but the bites make up for the cost. Use teasers in the 20- to 30-lb outfits, smaller baits, and go fishing. Choctawhatchee BAY east Trout and redfish are becoming more active on the flats as the water is starting to cool off after the summertime heat. Use a free-line or Carolina-rig menhaden along grass in the 1- to 3-ft. range. Artificial baits like Mirrolure Mirrodines, Vudu Mullet, and weedless spoons will all be working as well. Jacks and redfish should start with the fall time patterns as the menhaden push out of the bayous. Look for big schools of bait and pelicans. Swim baits and surface action top-water lures work great when these fish congregate together. If you do find them schooling, be respectful and give other boats on the school their earned breathing-room and try not to full throttle plane onto the school. You can also try croakers on Carolinarigs around the Mid Bay and Hwy 331 bridge pilings if you aren’t finding any schools. Live shrimp are starting to become more abundant, stop by and grab some here at Bay Baits; they’ll work well around the docks and bridge pilings for mangrove snapper and redfish, as well as the occasional flounder and sheepshead. The Bass fishing on Lake Seminole was really good in August! We have had some exceptional days fishing top-water lures like frogs, buzzbaits, and walking baits, even with the water temperatures averaging around 90 degrees. As we move into September, the top-water action should continue and the bass will start schooling up feeding on shad. Crankbaits and jerkbaits will be a good option for finding schools of bass. A couple of my favorites are the Strike King 5XD and a Strike King 6XD in any shad pattern. I like to fish these baits on 10 to 15 pound fluorocarbon line depending on the depth I am trying to reach. A jerkbait is one of my favorite baits to use in the early fall. I use a Strike King KVD jerkbait in the 200 and 300 series in any shad pattern. Love Your Outboard & It Will Love You Back! P
reventative maintenance on an outboard isn’t a complicated process in most cases. Small motors, especially newer ones of almost all makes, are extremely easy to maintain yourself. I own two Yamaha 4-stroke outboards: a Yamaha 250HP SHO and a 150HP. My 150 HP has thousands of hours logged and has long been out of warranty and I do all the maintenance, within my capabilities, both preventative and otherwise. Having some mechanical skills is certainly a bonus, but you’d be surprised how easy it is to perform most tasks. Doing preventative maintenance yourself will not void a warranty, but using the incorrect parts and products can, so I suggest you talk to a pro before you get started. Paul Musholt, owner of Paul’s Marine on Harrison Ave. in Panama City, has over 44 of experience in marine maintenance, so he knows some things about this. Paul’s Marine has the products and experience to make doing it yourself a breeze. He and his staff of professionals are always eager to help when you have any questions about performing your own maintenance. I interviewed Paul and he gave me a list of things for you to consider when you’re ready to give your outboard some love. With so many motors today being 4-strokes, changing the oil regularly has become a common task. Paul’s Marine has kits available to make this easy for you. Just tell him the make, model and year, and he’ll put a kit in your hand that has everything you need including the filter and even a funnel, for getting the oil into that small hole without making a huge mess. Paul has the biggest inventory of marine parts in Panama City and likely has whatever it is you need to work on your outboard. He’s also a certified service center for Mercury and Evinrude but whatever type of outboard you run, he can fix it! Here’s some tasks Paul recommends you do every 100 hours or at least yearly and why: • Change engine oil and filter. The kits make this exceptionally easy and basic tools are all you need. Oil viscosity breaks down rapidly in high RPM motors and the last thing you want is degraded oil in your outboard. • Change lower unit oil.
This one is really easy with a pump kit, oil and a screwdriver. The gears inside a lower unit require extremely thick oil to keep them from burning up. By changing this often, you’ll not only keep fresh oil on the gears, but you’ll detect the presence of water in the oil if you have a bad seal. Replacing the gears in a lower unit is an extremely expensive project. • Change water pump impeller. The impeller moves water to cool a hot engine and this little inexpensive part wears out fairly quickly so replace it, keep your engine cool and save big money! • Replace your fuel/water separator and fuel filters. Other tasks Paul recommends you do on a more frequent basis and why: • Check your engine oil regularly. If it gets low, you want to know. Low oil could be a symptom of a bigger problem but it will surely be a huge problem if you don’t catch it on time. • Remove prop to grease prop shaft and remove debris like fishing line that might be wrapped around it. Fishing line can cut into the prop shaft seal causing you expensive problems. • Check all anodes and replace as needed. It’s suggested that these be replaced after about 25% deterioration. Your outboard relies on these sacrificial metals to inhibit rusting and oxidation of critical parts. Kits to replace them all on an outboard are also available at Paul’s. • Spray electrical parts and anything subject to rusting with Corrosion Block. This can save you a lot of pain with corroded connections and parts that cause all sorts of problems. • Inspect and drain your fuel/water separator. Boats are susceptible to getting fuel mixed into the water. It collects in the separator, so it’s easy to drain and keep it from ever getting to your outboard. • Clean, treat and stabilize your fuel. Fuel often sits for extended periods of time in some boats and ethanol is always a threat to your outboard. Keeping your fuel healthy will ensure a healthy running outboard. Also use ethanol free fuel whenever possible. ~ Randy Cnota

September bass fishing in the Tallahassee region is unpredictable. One day the top-water bite is best and the next day it turns right around and you’ll need to be fishing much deeper to get a bite. On Lake Jackson it’s not as bad because water depths do not vary more than a few feet. When the top-water bite is on, it’s REALLY on! Here, September is late summer so bass aren’t into their fall feeding mode. Favored top-water baits this time of year are the Devil’s Horse, popping frog and swimming fluke fished fast in and around vegetation. Another great technique on Jackson is just dragging a big Te x a s - r i g g e d plastic worm. Most southern native bass fishermen have been dragging a Five-year-old Zeke Thoms caught this dandy worm their whole largemouth bass all by himself using his grandpa’s fishing life… shiners provided by Oyster Island Bait & Tackle. you should do well now. The Crowder area is a great place for this. It has huge mounds of hydrilla scattered across 1000 acres. With a decent bottom machine you can even pick out the areas with shells or harder bottom which should hold more bass. Many of these mounds are thick, and if flipping is your thing, remember to drop a crawdad or creature bait through there as you’re moving along. Lake levels are above normal so there’s no shortage of areas to fish. There’s also a lot of vegetation making it difficult for some watercraft to get to or fish them effectively without the right equipment. The best places to launch a boat are Crowder, Rhoden Cove and Sunset Landing. Oyster Island Bait and Tackle is located at Sunset Landing in case you’re fishing for brim or need shiners for bass. lake TALQUIN Lake Talquin isn’t quite as unpredictable as Lake Jackson, but keep that concept in the back of your mind just in case. Ledge fishing is key during most of the year on Lake Talquin. In September it only takes a couple of cool nights to move bass closer to, or into, the creeks. They may not stay there all day, but early morning is a great time to be on point. Walk the dog with a Spook Jr. or One Knocker in chrome and black, or twitch a black and silver floating Rapala using a long pause between twitches. Bass will be schooling so keep a Rattle Trap or blade bait handy just in case they come up feeding. Be prepared to make long casts at schools chasing bait. Bass are less spooked when casting to them from a distance. When an active school goes back down, continue to make a few more casts to the same area and count your bait down before you start your retrieve. Many times they continue to feed on the pod of baitfish but under the water. Many times in September I’ve followed bass out of creek mouths into the main lake as Alex Williams with a double-digit Talquin they follow bait. Bait fish bass fishing with his dad, Colt. will move lower in the water column as the sun continues to get higher. With a decent graph you can pinpoint these locations and intercept feeding bass with a Carolina-rigged worm or lizard. Also try hopping a 1/2 oz. or 3/4 oz. jig and trailer. My favorite colors are all dark this time of year such as Junebug or Black. If it’s stripe bass you enjoy catching this is also a good time to look for cloudy, rainy days and be ready for some top water or crank bait action. From Goat Island to the damn I’ve found them schooling over the years but they move very quickly. Use the same top-water baits and colors you use for largemouth bass. spearfishing forecast The water is still in the mid-80s with a thermocline at about 50 feet. Now it’s time to go out and find all the other fish we have been skipping and give the endangered red snapper and triggerfish a break. You can find black snapper under most wrecks and around hard bottom ledges. If you stay quiet and stealthy, they may even come out into the open to play. Do this by controlling your breathing, slowing down, and don’t look directly at the fish you want to shoot, especially barracuda, grouper and black snapper. Due to all the rain we’ve been getting, it seems the water clarity is better on the west side of the Panama City pass, with vis being about 30- to 50-feet. To the east, it’s about 15- to 20-feet. Hopefully, you have some “out of the way” places close in that haven’t been fished out, so you can get some big ones. If not, you may need to go out to deeper waters. Deep Dives Safety Tip: With all the talk of having to go deeper for the bigger fish, you still need to dive with-in your certification. If you find yourself needing to dive deeper and deeper to get what you want, then go take the deep dive specialty class; don’t be stupid up and deep dive anyway. September is the beginning of what every inshore fisherman loves… the fall pattern. Redfish and trout begin to school back up and move to shallower waters to feed as water temps begin to drop slightly. They will begin to be more active for longer periods of time during the day as well, thus increasing your chances of catching them. Artificial baits also come back into play during this time. Top-water plugs like the Rapala Skitterwalk can be used successfully all throughout the day. Paddle-tails and shrimp patterned soft plastics can also yield great catches due to fish focusing more of their feeding habits on shrimp because of the fall Mike Gomilla, from Tallahassee, with a stud 30 inch redfish. shrimp hatches in our area. Focus on the shallow grass areas early morning where you see bait on the surface because redfish will likely be in and around here first thing in the morning. We can also have some great king mackerel and mahi action just off the beaches 1- to 5-miles out this time of year. Grass lines that wash in with the western currents can carry mahi right off the beach and the kings will be near any structure off the sea bottom and/or following the huge schools of bait.

Let’s talk tarpon. This is a fish that is sometimes misunderstood. Most anglers think that you have to hire a specific guide and use only the most expensive gear to even get a chance at jumping a silver king. This is not necessarily true! Tarpon in our area have a migration pattern that encompasses a lot of different zones. Studies show that a strong run of tarpon move up from the lower part of the state in the spring and remain until around October. These fish congregate in mid-summer and then head offshore to spawn in the deeper water where their fertilized eggs can catch the loop current which flows the larvae to the southern part of the Gulf. Tarpon have a different life cycle then other bony fish; the young look more like an eel then a fish. This changes after a couple of months and when they reach the mangrove areas, they start to look and behave like the fish we know. In the early summer, fly fisherman set up in areas where it’s easy to sight cast to moving fish. Long chains of tarpon head to the west and school up. This is a very difficult way to fish for them and the guides running these charters are extremely territorial. It’s a good idea not to encroach on a flats skiff with an angler on the bow and a guide on the poling platform. You will be challenged, and it’s better to just give them some distance. That doesn’t mean you can’t find a place to hook up a tarpon. In September, the post-spawn fish are hungry and will eat a variety of baits. Live pinfish or small grunts on a float can be a sure thing. Even a dead mullet, or piece of one, fished on the bottom can produce a bite and a catch. The late summer spots are any of the passes, such as West Pass St. George or East Pass Dog Island. Coves from Alligator Point to Rattlesnake Cove are excellent areas to try. Remember, you will have to chase these bigger fish so have a float release on an anchor line. Some of these tarpon are 100 pounds or better and they will test your boating skills to the max. Circle hooks of 4/0 or better on 50 pound test leaders should be used with medium-heavy tackle. Give this a try, they are a fantastic game fish! I know it is hot and we’re all waiting for a break. The kingfish bite offshore remains solid along with amberjack. You will have to venture out a bit since the water temperature is high and the inshore waters are dark with rain water. Don’t forget to look for mangrove snapper on any structure, they are open all year. Inshore has been strong with the trout bite still happening, but you better fish them early in the day since the water warms pretty fast by late morning. By Capt. Randy Cnota his year, anglers heading out of C-Quarters Marina in Carrabelle, Fla.—in quest of the winning kingfish—were blessed with some beautiful weather and light seas. Afternoon winds whipped up some waves, but it was a welcome relief to the heat. While the weather was cooperative, most teams found the bite to be a bit tough… at least for the bigger kings.

Capt. Page Pitman, of Crawfordville, Fla., steered his winning team “Bill Collector” to a second victory in three years by concentrating efforts, again, on finding the right live bait and presenting it with a slow bump-trolling method. Jessica Welch hauled in their winning catch, a 37.4-pound king to secure both the team’s win and this year’s Lady Angler title. Capt. Pitman said this win was very special to him. In the 2017 Shootout, his son Gage hauled in the winning fish for the team. A few months later, tragedy struck and Gage passed away. Winning the tournament this year without Gage by his side was a bitter-sweet reminder of better times fishing with his son. This kind of tragedy should make us all take pause and reflect on how very special each moment with friends and family really is. Before Justin Cahoon left the event, he hitched a new Nautic Star bay boat to his truck after winning it in the raffle. Not a bad return on his $100 investment. This event raised $43,520 for the Leukemia Research Foundation, bringing the total amount raised to a whopping $1,043,645 to date! The foundation has made great strides toward treating blood cancers. A new treatment called CAR T-cell therapy has been approved by the FDA, and Medicare has come on board to help cover this expensive gene therapy. CAR T-cell is proving to be very effective in blood cancers. It involves removing genes from the body, re-engineering them and returning them to the patient. Kevin Radelet, the foundation’s executive director described it as a game of Pac Man going on inside the patient where the re-engineered genes attack the cancer. This is great news, and it’s a direct result of the efforts of everyone that conducts, supports and participates in this event and others like it. ext time you’re on a charter boat, notice the knife the captain uses to cut bait. When you’re on the docks, stop at the cleaning table to see what the mates use to fillet fish. n case you don’t already know and do this, here’s a trick that can save a day in the absence of live bait. If you’re going bottom fishing and pinfish, sardines, pogies or the others are hard to find with a cast net or sabiki, hedge your bets by keeping a couple dozen fresh or frozen baits about the diameter of a softball, or larger, in the cooler. Even in freshwater, when live gizzard shad or skipjacks are nowhere to be found, a box of frozen baits can still entice catfish, striped bass and others. Dropping a whole dead bait down will get bites, but if you take a minute to “butterfly” them, these once dead baitfish come back to life in the current. No grouper or big snapper can resist them when presented properly. Grunts pinkies and seabass will hammer at it, and eventually get the hook, but grouper or anything else with a large enough mouth will simply inhale it. I’ve seen times when the bite would shut down, even with live bait, and a fresh butterflied beeliner (vermillion snapper) would get bit instantly. The two fillets of any given baitfish attached to the head, without the backbone and dorsal fins are just a little too much to resist for the big meat-eaters. Granted, it’s also big shark candy, but as Popeye would say, “You pays your money, you takes your chances.” Butterflying a bait is very simple. Anyone can go out and catch a pile of grunts, pinkies and seabass with small cut bait, but it’s no coincidence that the people who specifically go fishing for grouper are the ones that come home with the “brown fish” in the box. Don’t hesitate to butterfly a snapper or anything else you thought was once too large for bait. On the bottom, the smaller fish will hammer away at the two larger fillets, and out of nowhere a big gag
or red grouper will finish it off. A 1 ½-pound beeliner, pinkie or Spanish mackerel is the perfect candidate for this job. When you feel the little ones banging on it, sit tight and don’t set the hook. Wait for the big bite; there will be no question when it gets eaten instead of pecked at. Big butterflied mullet, spots and croakers are extremely effective inshore and nearshore for red or black drum. In freshwater, a butterflied bream, perch, crappie or other panfish is perfect for big catfish. To butterfly a bait, start at the tail and fillet each side up to just behind the head and out the gut area. Then grab the tail and break the backbone out just behind the head.
