The winds have been whipping up lately, but if you can catch a break there is a lot of action on the wrecks and other structures. Plenty of snapper and grouper are being found on the bottom if you can get through the triggerfish and amberjack. There are also plenty of king mackerel being caught flat-lining live bait over the wrecks as well. Just because its cooler doesn’t mean the fish quit eating so get out and put a few in the cooler for dinner.

The water temperatures are down enough to send the speckled trout and redfish into their winter patterns. The trout are in the creeks, bayous, and canals. On the colder days the bite will be slow, so patience is a virtue. Live shrimp will work best and they need to be fished on the bottom with little to no movement. The same goes for the redfish. On warmer days, fish will move toward the mouths of the creeks and bayous and be a little more active. Most of the flounder have moved out into the gulf, and can be caught on the bottom with a light bottom rig. Again live shrimp will work best, but cut bait and soft plastic jigs will produce as well. There are plenty of Spanish and bluefish being caught trolling or casting to in the bay and down the beach. Mangrove snapper are around the bridges and other inshore structure in good numbers and can be caught with light tackle rigs tipped with Chris Rushing of Howell Tackle fame taking Panama City reds. shrimp.

lake SEMINOLE With the cooler temperatures, bass fishing on Lake Seminole has been great! Top-water lures have been very productive. The cooler water temperatures are running the bait fish into the Spring Creek arm of the lake and jerk-baits have been very productive this fall as well. Bass Island campers and locals alike are bringing numerous limits to the docks at Wingate’s Lunker Lodge. Recently, a couple of young men from Cairo, GA came over and bought some minnows from Ms. Jane, and were back within two hours with limits of crappie and thanked her for selling them such good minnows from Wingate’s. Duck hunting season is coming up and we have been seeing plenty of ducks mixed in with the coots. We think they’ve figured out that is good camouflage for them. Tragedy on Lake Talquin By Randy Cnota
I
find myself in a very sad place as we go into our holiday season. Our communities were rocked with the news that 10 year old Skylar Brogdon-Marr was killed in a boating accident on Lake Talquin in early November. The pain of such a tragic loss for his family and friends must be overwhelming. I have no intent to try to cast blame on anyone involved because I’m certain that their grief is immeasurable, but given that a search party was needed to find his body, suggests that he wasn’t wearing a life jacket, and that’s disturbing to me. It isn’t certain whether or not wearing one would have saved his life in this accident, but it seems very possible. Wearing a life jacket is the most basic rule of safe boating, and this is exactly why!
On the same day, my partner, Kyle Pridgen, and I were competing in a bass tournament launching out of White City on the Intracoastal Waterway. Shortly after blast off, we hit wakes from earlier boats and Kyle was thrown from the boat. He had a quality life jacket on and fortunately, sustained no serious injuries. It could have been much worse, and I’m thankful beyond words that he came out of it okay. It just seems odd that the very same day of the Talquin tragedy, I get jolted back into the reality that it can happen to anyone. I mention this incident because experience alone does not prevent boating accidents from happening. My experience on the water runs deep, but that’s not what prevented our accident from being much worse - it was following rules and preparation. JR Mundinger, our contributing writer and guide on Lake Talquin, has always been a great advocate of boating safety, and he provided me with some research he conducted

about the following Coast Guard statistics. • In 2016, the Coast Guard counted 4,463 accidents that resulted in 701 deaths, 2,903 injuries and approximately $49 million dollars of damage to property. • Operator inattention, operator inexperience, improper lookout, excessive speed, and machinery failure rank as the top five primary contributing factors in accidents. • Where cause of death was known, 80% of fatal boating accident victims drowned. Of

those drowning victims with reported life jacket usage, 83% WERE NOT WEARING A LIFE JACKET. On 4 November 2017, two boating accidents in our communities had completely different endings. If this doesn’t bring it home for you, then I don’t know what will; boating is no joke! I think the message here is quite clear: pay attention to your surroundings, slow down, wear your life jacket and MAKE kids wear them. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Skylar’s family and friends. We are truly saddened for your loss.

Deer point lake In this part of the country, most really big fish are caught through the winter months, December through March. This month I say, “let the games begin!” The weather will be the biggest player in your success or failure. As cold fronts blow through, Florida bass get lock-jaw making it hard to catch anything, let alone that trophy. Plan trips after weather has a chance to stabilize. Even if it stays cold for an extended period, once we get into several days of it, big bass will eat. If the weather warms for a few days, this will simply change your tactics. Water temps affect bass positioning and behavior big time, but I’ve had bass crush a top-water frog after a stabilizing period of a few days with water in the low 50’s to high 40’s. Sometimes I feel like we should all just throw the bass fishing rule books out this time of year because of what I’ve seen over the years. You’d think a cold-blooded creature like a bass would never strike with lightning speed on a top-water but they will…not often, but the ones I’ve had do it were monsters! There’s no doubt that finesse presentations will get you more bites. Whacky-rigging a soft plastic worm or stick bait is a great approach. Drop-shoting a finesse worm or rigging one on a light wire jig like a Giggy Head jig will work well too. I’ll often utilize these approaches but more often than not, I’m going big.

A Gambler Double weed guard jig is my choice for that big bite. I tip it with a Gambler Mega Daddy craw to give it a bulky crawfish look. Bass do not have to eat as often in the cold due to a slow metabolism, but they do like to get a big meal when presented properly. This jig is designed to go deep into the thickest nastiest looking wood and grass cover you can find, which is right where big bass will be. I don’t cast this with a wimpy set-up. I’m usually using the ¾ ounce size, so a 7’ 6” med-heavy stick with 65 lb. test braid is recommended. It’s cold out and it’s not for the faint of heart…go big or go home! lake JACKSON After months of desert like conditions the water levels at Lake Jackson are getting terminal. As boat ramps shrink and shorelines grow, Jackson becomes a haven for duck hunters, kayakers and small watercraft enthusiasts. Boats with air cooled motors dominate, especially in backwater areas where deeper holes cannot be accessed by larger boats. On a positive note, weed lines and thicker vegetation adjacent to deep water will congregate schools of bass. A plethora of different baits begin to work as less fishing pressure means better results. Bass in December get really hungry in anticipation of cooler weather. Remember, they’re cold blooded so once water temperatures drop into the low 60’s bass become more and more lethargic. Bladed baits like spinner baits and swimming jigs work well around edges as they mimic larger baitfish. Work these erratically in those areas and pay special attention to small schools of baitfish following your bait back to the boat; if you see this, you’ll want to mine Fishtallahassee Guide JR with the area with different baits some nice Jackson bass. until you find what works. If water temps drop into the 50’s, bass move tighter to cover. Any type of matted vegetation will hold heat and bait; work jigs, worms and other soft plastics here. As water warms during the late afternoons green grass becomes your best friend. As global warming has changed temperatures during the year, I’ve been catching bedding bass in late December as long as the water temperatures stay in the 60’s. Beds aren’t usually bright and shiny yet but once a bass is caught they become noticeable. Many of my larger bass caught each year are caught during the month of December. Econfina Creek WMA J
ust north of Panama City, near Greenhead, you’ll find the Fitzhugh Carter tract of lakes and ponds in the heart of the Econfina Creek Wildlife Management Area. The Special Opportunity Fishing Program here provides a great opportunity for anglers of all ages to fish in cypress and sand-bottomed ponds. The fishing program operates Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday year-round with the exception of established hunting seasons. If you’d like to spend a peaceful day of fishing on pristine waters with the chance to land a trophy fish, then this is the place for you. The sounds of the surrounding forest are occasionally interrupted by the bump of an oar on the side of an aluminum boat or a feeding fish breaching the water’s surface. Peace and quiet is what’s in store, but often you’ll hear the excitement of another angler landing a big fish. No boats are allowed to be trailered in, but you don’t need one; call ahead and reserve one of the boats that are there waiting for you.
Renting them is free, and oars, life jackets and cushions are provided just to sweeten the deal. All you have to do is check in and provide a photo ID; as long as you’ve made a reservation or if a boat is available, it’s yours to use. The harvest of bass is prohibited, and they grow big here! Even though these waters are not overfished, catching them can require some skill and preparation. For most of the year, buzzing frogs, swimming worms and soft plastic jerk-baits will get plenty of bites. Winter time fishing for Florida is all about fishing around the cold fronts. As the water temps change this time of year, so do the patterns of the different species of fish. The day of a cold front is usually great, the day after is normally the worst, and second and third days following get better and better each day with good sun light and warming temps. If temperatures drop drastically overnight, look for deep holes or ledges in the bays or bayous for trout and redfish. The intracoastal water ways and river mouths make great spots due to the warmer fresh water flowing into the gulf. Anything shrimp or shrimp patterned works great for bait this time of year. Live shrimp on the bottom near these deltas or canals work very well. Artificial shrimp jigs like the Slayer Inc. SSB stick baits bounced along the bottom can also work great. Another fishing Capt. There was a tragic boating accident on Talquin recently that involved my personal friends with 50 years of boating experience. In a split second and no advance warning things happen. After interviews I’ve found this tragedy could and should have been avoided simply by obeying safe boating rules. In addition, a 10 year old boy lost his life after he was thrown from the boat and drowned. He was NOT wearing a life jacket. The driver and passenger of the first boat were also ejected and knocked unconscious. They were wearing their life jackets and are alive today Offer ends 12/15/17 because of it. Trout will be tricky this month. The deeper canals, bayous, and creeks will be holding fish. I would fish them slow and low with live baits and shrimp imitations. Redfish will be on the move. If you want slot sized reds, fish docks, and shallows in or near bayous. Lots of bull reds will be caught in the pass and around deeper bridges this month. Mangrove snapper will also be hanging around structure. If you want flounder, you just might need to follow them out of the pass this month at some point, but they can be found in the bay near structure or drop offs.
Offshore:

Most of the surface pelagics will be on the move southward if it is a cold December, so bottom fishing will be the focus for most. Look for flounder on those near shore reefs. I like to drop bull minnows on light gear on the outsides of the structures. I would keep a couple of heavy rods rigged for grouper as well. Tuna often move up close this time of year so keep an eye on the surface. My trick outside the pass this time of year is to have something rigged for everything. Water temps and cold fronts can change everything.
Surf:
Fish shrimp and crabs on bottom for big redfish. Shrimp will also produce some pompano and whiting. If you want something to remember, rig strong with wire leader, and cast out some large cuts of bonito. Big sharks like our beaches in the winter. Thanks for reading, Fish On! Capt. With the coming of winter, fishing changes from our migratory species to the fish that hang out and weather the cold. Some fish such as sheepshead and black sea bass congregate to spawn which can make for some non-stop catching. Look around any structure like docks, piers or rock piles both in Saint George Sound or just offshore for sheepshead. They will take shrimp or even better, fiddler crabs. Use a small hook and be easy on the hookup. Don’t strike hard to set the hook because they like to crush up their food before Winter Black Bass taken getting it down. Black sea bass by Mary Johnson. fishing is best offshore on natural bottom out to sixty feet as the big breeders come in. These are some of the best eating fish we have and can be large in December. The males make a physical change and get what we refer to as the “Hump Head.” When on the bite they will take almost any bait or jig. Try sending down a one-and-a-half-ounce white jig, tipped with shrimp, and hang on. Along with Key West grunts you offshore anglers can have a big day and come home with a nice bunch of good eating fish. Gag grouper season remains open in our County through 31 December, so make the best of it. Try cruising the gulf-side beach of Dog Island or around Dog Island Reef for redfish and small black drum. When the water is clear they can be sight fished right up close to the wave breaks. The black drum is often over looked as a good food fish since the big ones are not edible, but if you get one in the under the five pound class and it will be delicious. Spotted sea trout will be moving into the rivers and shallows as the water cools. White trout congregate just as the others do to spawn and can be a lot of fun when you find them. There are a lot of fish to catch, you just have to get out and find them either from a boat or the beach. Good luck out there and be safe.
