T
he rod doubled, and it was all Jack could do to hang on until his big brother Jimmy got over to help. Then our friend Jacob grabbed on too. Jacob was on the front grip of the rod, Jack in the middle— reeling for all he was worth—and Jimmy on the rod handle. It was quite a sight as they worked together to reel something up from the dark blue 115 feet below. They managed to get the fish up for a bit, but then the rod bowed hard. Now it was pulling line and leaving the boat behind. With a magnificent pull, the line suddenly went slack. Jack’s fish had been sharked! All that was left was a head. The fight hadn’t lasted long, but man it was exciting! This was on a business trip from Georgia through central and south Florida, during which I hoped to squeeze in some fishing. In speaking
with a customer about Purge Right purging compounds, the conversation inevitably turned to fishing. I told him I wanted to catch peacock bass and Mayan cichlid. He informed me that the canal across the street had both. That was great news! Before heading to Florida, I contacted my friend and Florida local Chris Dean. He wanted to fish, too. My friend Eric Crowley, who guides in Georgia but fishes a lot in Florida, clued me in to some good locations. We were set. I met Chris and his son Jack at the canal, and we caught Mayan cichlids until dark. We had a blast. It’s like bream fishing back home, only much more colorful. That evening over supper, when the boat Chris and I hoped to fish from fell through, my dreams of catching giant snook vanished like ice cream on a hot day. I spent the next half hour texting and calling captains. Nobody had any openings the next day. Later, Chris’s other son, Jimmy, called with some intel on bank spots where we might catch peacock or snook. Jimmy was MIA the next morning, but when he finally called he had come through in a big way. His buddy Jacob had a boat ready to go chase snook. All five of us—Jimmy, Jacob, Chris, Jack and I— loaded up and headed through the mangrove jungle with a tank full of bait. As we passed the inlet, we noticed the waves didn’t look too bad seaward. We decided to ride out and see how it was. So glad we did! We caught the jack that was sharked as well as several snappers, triggers, cobia, amberjacks, and a remora that latched onto the side of the boat when we tried to release it. I also caught my first African pompano. As I drove back to Georgia the next day, I daydreamed about my next business trip to West Palm. I hope Florida folks realize how good they’ve got it. n early 2018, FWC awarded $250,000 to five organizations to research and develop methods to remove lionfish from deep-water habitat. Also, the National Marine Fisheries Service has approved a permit to set out 100 cages to study whether traps can be effective. Lionfish can be found in reefs, mangroves and seagrass meadows. They are voracious eaters that consume more than 50 different species, including shrimp, grouper and lobster. They have no natural predators in the Atlantic, and some scientists believe lionfish are so widespread that we may not be able to reverse their effect. Florida has taken steps to address the lionfish problem. Among the measures are a prohibition on the import of lionfish for aquariums, a ban on lionfish in aquaculture, yearly lionfish fishing derbies, a phone app to collect data and raise awareness of the dangers of lionfish and encouraging a market for their tasty meat. The FWC awards went to the University of Florida to field test strategies for harvesting lionfish in deep water using non- containment curtain traps. The Reef Environmental Education Foundation will assess modified lobster trap and curtain trap designs and assess whether sound can be used as an attractant. American Marine Research Company will work to develop an underwater drone that can be used to control lionfish populations. R3 Digital Sciences will develop fish trap extension kits for existing commercial spiny lobster traps to convert them into smart traps capable of targeting lionfish in depths greater than 130 feet. The Atlantic Lionshare Ltd. will develop a remotely-operated vehicle called the Reef Sweeper to harvest lionfish from beyond recreational diving depths.

he Atlantic Salmon Federation (ASF) is calling on Canada to enact new management measures to reduce the southern Gulf of St. Lawrence striped bass population. “It’s important that Canadian government leaders from across the country understand what’s happening in the Gulf of St. Lawrence and especially on the Miramichi River,” said ASF president Bill Taylor. “DFO has taken incremental steps, but more is needed to restore balance for all species.” Striped bass are native to the southern Gulf of St. Lawrence and were once considered threatened. All fisheries were closed by 2000, and a recovery target of 31,200 spawning adults was established. That goal has now been exceeded for eight consecutive years. Recent estimates show between 500,000 and 2-million striped bass spawn annually in the Miramichi. “We have clearly shown this concentration of striped bass is having severe negative effects on wild Atlantic salmon,” said Taylor. Since 2003, ASF and partners like the Miramichi Salmon Association have been tracking juvenile Atlantic salmon, known as smolt, in three Gulf of St. Lawrence rivers. Initially, 65-75 percent of tagged smolt survived migration through the estuary of each river. Survival rates on the Restigouche and Cascapedia rivers have remained stable, but a downward trend began in 2011 on the Miramichi, coinciding with the sharp rise in striped bass. Less than 10 percent of smolt tagged in the Northwest Miramichi River survived to reach the Gulf of St. Lawrence in 2017. The lower Northwest Miramichi is where the entire southern Gulf of St. Lawrence striped bass population gathers to spawn each spring. At the same time, smolt are migrating to the ocean.

Nearly 500 West Palm Beach Fishing Club (WPBFC) members, families and friends gathered at the South Florida Fairgrounds to celebrate the club’s 84th annual Awards BBQ & Auction. It was an evening complete with live music from the Mid-Shift Band, delicious cooked-on-site BBQ, a silent auction and raffle, and angling award presentations. Throughout the year, club members compete in the club’s year-long fishing contest, entering their catches for a variety of different species in numerous tackle categories. The annual BBQ is where these anglers are recognized for their angling accomplishments, which included some really impressive fish this year. Every PeeWee member, kids under 10 years old, who caught a fish got their moment in the spotlight. One by one they made their way to the stage to claim their trophy and new Penn Pursuit spinning rod and reel combo. Recognizing PeeWee anglers is a long-standing fishing club tradition, which continues to engage our youth in the sport of fishing. While these kids simply just have to enter a fish to win an award, earning the title of Grand Champion Adult Angler and Junior Angler of the Year entails much stricter criteria through demonstration of true angling skill. Fourteen-year-old Emily Hanzlik, a decorated IGFA world record holder, earned herself the 2018 Junior Angler of the Year trophy, one of the WPBFC’s most coveted titles. She posted several largemouth bass over 7 lbs. and one massive 33 lb. 12 oz. barracuda. Emily landed contest qualifying fish on everything from light spinning rods casting artificial lures out in Loxahatchee, to using bait on heavy conventional reels in the Florida Keys. The Grand Champion Adult Angler award is arguably the WPBFC’s highest angling honor recognizing the best fisherman in the club. With over 1400 members there is a lot of competition. Winning this award isn’t easily accomplished, it demands catching a wide variety of fish species on different types of tackle including light spinning gear, plug casting rods and fly. Max Lichtig of North Palm Beach persistently entered impressive fish all year long. His 26 lb. 8 oz. snook at the spillway using a jig on a plug casting outfit was one of Max’s many impressive contest entries. He also bested double-digit muttons, grouper, kingfish and a behemoth 38 lb. 3 oz. jack crevalle, which he fooled with an artificial lure on 8 pound test. Max got it done offshore and inshore to earn the WPBFC’s top angling award. Congratulations to Max and Emily cementing their names among many other talented anglers throughout the history of the WPBFC. Special thanks to our friends at Tuppen’s Marine & Tackle, Penn Fishing Tackle and TD Bank for sponsoring this event, to all the WPBFC volunteers who work tirelessly to pull the event together, and all the WPBFC members and friends who attended. Happy Holidays Anglers! During December we will continue to have cooling air and sea temperatures, providing a much needed break from the heat and causing the offshore bite to fire up. Sailfish season will continue to provide anglers plenty of tail walking, drag screaming action. The sailfish use cold fronts to aid their southerly migration, and their numbers will continue to grow this month as they migrate through our waters. This is the time of the year when anglers from all around the world come to “Sailfish Alley” aka South Florida to target sailfish! If you are looking to catch a sailfish, it is important to pay attention to the wind direction and the barometric pressure. Many anglers believe northerly winds get the sailfish feeding but it is also due to high pressure. The offshore bite will be red-hot with stable high pressure conditions. After a couple days of consistent pressure, you have a good chance of catching this “bucket list” fish so plan accordingly! The bite also turns on before approaching cold fronts and rain, so keep this in mind when planning a fishing trip this month. Last month, we hooked quite a few sailfish slow trolling blue runners. Mahi Mahi will also be migrating south from the northern states with the help of cold fronts. The mahi mahi should range from 6-30lbs, with larger fish not uncommon. Blackfin tuna, in the football size range will start to show up as well. Trolling feathers and squid pups between 200-400ft will be your best bet to catch some fresh sushi! The bottom bite should also produce great table fare. During the month, mutton snapper, yellowtail snapper and trigger fish will be the best species to target on the reefs and bottom structures. Live bait or dead sardines will be the bait of choice. Keep in mind, NE winds bring the bait and pelagics closer to shore. Bait will gather at the mouths of inlets and areas with a fast moving current. Be safe during the holidays anglers and until next time, keep on catchin’! Here are some gift ideas for the people that enjoy the outdoor active lifestyle. First, you can always buy the big ticket item such as a new board. For the first time rider it is best to start off with a flat water style SUP. These are basic boards that can run from $850 - $1500. You may even want to go on Craigslist and start with a used board which would range from $300$1000. Now one thing to remember is that, “a good thing ain’t cheap, and a cheap thing ain’t good”. So do your research. All boards are not created equal. However, if you have an advanced rider you should find out their exact board they like, including the dimensions, which are most important. The more advanced boards range from $1,500-$3,000. Don’t forget to see if they are looking for a special paddle. The beginner should just use an adjustable paddle but for advanced riders, again you need to ask them what they are looking for. Leashes are very important. To a rider, it is the security of not letting your board get away from you. I prefer a coil leash. It stays out of the water which decreases drag. Leashes run around $35. To accompany that you would need a PFD which is mandatory in most states. The best PFDs for SUP are waist band PFDs. You can connect the leash to the PFD. PFDs cost an average of $69-$120. For the SUP Fisherman, check out “The BoardFisher” by Board Works. It will hold 2 fishing poles, anchor, all your tackle and bait in a very simplified mesh crate. Plus you can slide your paddle in it when you’re fishing. The Boynton Beach Community Redevelopment Agency and the City of Delray Beach invite you to celebrate the holiday season Florida style at the 47th Annual Holiday Boat Parade, December 14, 2018. RED TIDE - I’ve been getting many calls daily of anglers concerns about the “Red Tide” issue. They are concerned whether there is any fish to catch and if they do catch some, are they safe to eat. My answer to them is yes and yes! There’s plenty of fish out there and they are safe to Lots of consume. We fish out of the Boynton Beach mahi, Inlet in water depths of 60 feet to up to 130 blackfin feet. No one has had any symptoms that far and off the beach. The fish that we see are very yellowtails alive and flourishing. The Red Tide has been spotted in the shallow warmer waters and typically affecting the smaller bait fish that unfortunately get caught up in the algae, suffocate and die. Lately the fishing has picked up in our area and we’ve been seeing very large schools of blackfin tuna by the hundreds and even larger. They are ranging in size of 4-10 pounds on average. We have never seen schools of tuna this large in many years and so far, they have been around for several days now. As of this date I have not heard of any more reports of the red tide in our local area. I hope that it’s just about over and that the upcoming cold fronts should help us out with that. To be safe of not contaminating your catch, always remember to properly ice down your catch right after it’s caught until consumption. I used a variety of lures, but the one I used the most was a dark green senko. It usually gets quite a bit of action, but this time I only caught 2 fish. The fish typically don’t bite when it is hot, so that’s most likely why they weren’t biting when I went. Around Thanksgiving time, I am hoping to go catch my first peacock bass. November 3rd West Palm Beach celebrated LagoonFest. I spent the morning with Barbara, who oversees Coastal Angler magazine and my family. LagoonFest celebrates the Palm Beach waterways and estuaries. LagoonFest had many environmental establishments such as Busch Wildlife Sanctuary. You could participate in kayak clean ups and paddle boarding. It was right next to the West Palm green market, so we got fresh corn and vegetables while we were there. I met Eric Anderson who is the senior environmental analyst of Palm Beach County. He educated my family and I about the artificial reefs in the intercoastal. He also told us about a 6 week fishing challenge, where you fish the The Coastal Angler intercoastal and turn in your Tent with Christopher & results to them. This is a way for Barbara at LagoonFest. the county to collect fisheries data. It is called the Lake Worth Lagoon Fishing Challenge. I will hopefully be participating in it next summer, and I hope more people will too. There is an article on it in the issue of September 2018 on page 14.

FISHINGFORECASTS SOUTH COUNTY INSHORE & FRESHWATER By Capt. Patrick Smith
Temps have cooled off and that can cause the fishing to heat up. Winter time for me means switching gears from big live baits to artificials and shrimp. I really like to fish every deep hole and channel I can find searching for meat fish. Typical species we find are sheepshead, big croakers, pompano, triple tail, redfish and black drum but you really never know what might pop up. A gulfstream shrimp jig tipped with a piece of fresh shrimp will get the job done. For artificial doa shrimp and terroreyez will get bites too. The bluefish will be plentiful and any cheap lure that shines and or makes noise shouldn’t last long. For fly fisherman I would be throwing clousers in different weights and colors till you find one that works that day. Most of these fish are feeding on the bottom so that’s the place to focus. On the fresh side of things bass and peacocks should still be Leroy and Gary from New Mexico with a 10lb clown they landed 17 of them feeding well depending on cold fronts and like the salt fish think this day deep and slow presentations. Slow trolling a lipped plug or rattle trap is a great way to locate the fish. When the weather is nasty it’s a great time to target sunshine bass in the Osbourne chain. Flashy jerkbaits should get you hooked up especially if they are busting bait on the surface. Fly fisherman should be throwing sinking and intermediate lines out deep with eat me flies and clousers. ROAD TRIPFISHING Old Fishing Buddies

by Keith Lozott, Contributing Writer Having good fishing buddies to fish with time after time is something to be cherished and not taken for granted. Think about the stories you share, the fish you catch, and the quality time spent with buddies on the water that can’t be matched anywhere else. You never know when someone has to move for work, or another must leave for family reasons, or you just don’t have the time to fish as much as you’d like. This certainly has been the case with a few of my old fishing partners from Central Florida. We always talk about fishing for kingfish, cobia, tarpon, and much more out of Port Canaveral, but really haven’t had the opportunity to catch up as much as we’d like. Last month offered a window to meet in Sebastian to fish the river for trout, redfish and anything else that would bite a soft plastic lure, topwater plug or our favorite lure the Exude D.A.R.T. (Soft Plastic if you’re not familiar). We had a couple solid reports from my buddie’s boat mechanic that the trout were all over Snag Harbour area, which has seriously produced for me in the past. We cruised down a leeward shoreline that had some depth on the trolling motor, and the third or fourth cast Bill hooked up a small redfish on a D.A.R.T. The skunk was off early, but the water ahead looked promising. We kept tossing lures near the mangroves and reeling at slow to mid speed with a jigging action to the retrieve; when I say the trout were thick that was an understatement. We hooked up at least 20 nice trout between the three of us on the 300 yards of shoreline we fished. It may have been better if we didn’t have dolphins working the shoreline with us. Typically, we would’ve moved on from the dolphin, but the bite was hot; we shared the good fishing with them. We were careful to release the trout when the dolphins were far enough away to not come eat the tired fish. We decided to make only one pass on that shoreline and give the fish a break to recover and hide from the dolphins. I had fished the opposite shoreline in the past with very good success catching sizable trout and then redfish once the bottom contour changed to suit the red’s lifestyle. This time the shoreline was in the wind which produced one of the biggest trout I’ve ever caught. Bait gets pushed into the windy shorelines and cause predatory fish to hunker down in these areas waiting to crush an unsuspecting baitfish. Again, maybe two or three casts and it was on! A nice sized seatrout was buttoned up, landed and released adding to the count. I noticed that the size of the trout were much bigger than the leeward side of the mangroves. We cruised down this shoreline one time and caught eight or so trout and spooked a couple huge snook laying on the bottom. By this time the day was coming to an end and I had to get back home to get my daughter from school. The moral of the story is, make time even when you’re pressed for it to fish with good friends and experience the camaraderie a day on the water offers.

You never know
Dust your kites off and check your kite clips when the man in and swivels on the kite rod, there’s going to be the stripe suit will show up... have sailfish action heading our way. Best chance to your tackle ready! land multiple numbers.... the day of a cold front and north west winds. Along with some great sailfish action will be a few nice dollies in the mix. Bigger dolphin will pair up with the sailfish schools to be a more effective hunter. Leave the wire off the rigs if you want to catch these guys. If a sail gets a taste of wire, there’s a good chance it will jump the hook off. You have been warned! For you inshore anglers. there will be a few mullet schools hanging around with predators following. The tarpon fishing around the Sailfish Club will be hot during the evening hours. The cooler weather turn’s these prehistoric fish on. Net a few mullets or use a mullet like DOA lure and cast up under the dock lights to entice the bite. When hooked up, be vigilant and get those fish away from the dock poles. This is big danger for any novice and easy cut off for any fish. Don’t forget to check the boil. It is the water being discharged from the power plant. There can be large jacks lurking around there. Another great spot is the Rybovich Reef. There is a sunken barge there and holds monster Goliath grouper, along with snook and occasional redfish. I want to talk about a spot most fishermen pass every day. Did you know we have a local school of bonefish that live around the Peanut Island sandbar? This is a great spot to light tackle or fly fish. Next time you’re out inshore fishing, stop and take a cast on the sandbar and see what happens. Good luck! Also anglers, this is the time of year to strip your reels of old line and replenish with new. Losing a big fish to old line breakage will make you feel like a lesser angler. This line is top notch for the fishing we do in our area. Well that’s it for this month. Remember you can’t catch them from the couch....
INSHORE: December will start to bring a few cold fronts our way. During the winter months, when water temps drop, targeting areas that warm quickly like docks, mangroves, mud flats and potholes will be the best bet. Getting out a little later in the day to allow those areas to warm will help you put more fish in the kayak. Sheepshead are a favorite of mine to target during this time. These fish are easy to catch on just pieces of dead or live shrimp A nice clown knifefish around docks, bridges and channels caught on Lake Ida. while kayak fishing the intracoastal. OFFSHORE: Offshore kayak fishing during the winter is highly dependent on the weather. These windy days will get the fish moving especially the sailfish. A few days of high northeast should get them fired up and ready to eat your goggle eye or pilchard. While offshore kayak fishing the Delray Beach area, trolling the 90-200ft depths will give you the best shot at a bite. If venturing way offshore is not possible, try staying nearshore and target the bluefish and Spanish mackerel that will be running the beach. These fish can be a lot of fun on light tackle when maybe the other big pelagics are not cooperating. FRESHWATER: Depending on how cold it gets the peacock bass, largemouth bass and clown knifefish bite should continue to be great. Live shiners or shad are your best bets while fishing Lake Ida and Lake Osbourne. All 3 of these fish will be looking for deeper water when the water temps get colder. Find the right depth and you will find the fish. Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas to all anglers and boaters. December fishing offers a variety of species to target. The cool fronts push south to our region bringing cooler water temperatures and brisk north east winds. Inshore anglers have a plethora of species to target like snook, tarpon, pompano, snapper, mackerel and many others. Every fish has a migration pattern and specific areas they like to migrate to due to structure, food and warmth. Understanding and learning patterns is the key to a successful angler. Snook season closes December Jackie with 15th, but that should not stop a snook anglers from targeting them. Snook caught on a fanatics can find stellar action near DOA C.A.L. deep channels, docks, and sea walls. 3” shad tail. Live bait shrimp, DOA shrimp and DOA C.A.L. 3 inch shad in glow gold rush belly are great choices to present predator fish enticing strikes. Back bays and canals are great areas to locate snook and it is not uncommon in my area to catch 4 different species of snook. Night time fishing is also a great choice to target snook. Fly fishing offers many strikes and drag screaming action. Tarpon begin to rise up and show anglers who is the king; bays and flats teem with tarpon this time of year. Live bait shrimp and mullet drifted with the tide is the best technique to hook a tarpon. Artificial enthusiasts can also get in on the action. DOA 3 inch shrimp in glow and Rapala SubWalk and twitching mullet baits entice strikes. The trick is to find the pattern the
fish want and it’s on. Tarpon range in in size from 5 to 50 pounds. Jacks, drum, trout, bluefish and ladyfish all roam the flats and channel edges. Looking for bait schools or birds in the area will help you locate fish. A good bottom machine like the hummingbird helix with side scan and down imaging helps pinpoint fish on or near the bottom. Live shrimp freelined, DOA Shrimp or a DOA C.A.L. 3 inch shad in glow Lynn with a redfish. holographic will get you hooked up. Well that is the fishing report for the Palm Beach, Jupiter area. When it comes to owning and selecting a firearm for self-protection and concealed carry, there is not a better choice than a Smith & Wesson J-Frame revolver. The good ole’ 36 is now offered in airweight versions with or without exposed hammers: the 637 and 642. The all black variants are the 37 and 442. Stainless versions, known as the model 60 and 640 are also chambered in the 357 magnum caliber if you want even more power. There is an AirLite version made from Scandium and Titanium, also chambered in 357 magnum. Extremely reliable, easy to carry, very little maintenance, and accurate enough for any close defensive situation someone may need. How could someone go wrong with this choice? If you are serious about carrying a firearm or just want something in your nightstand drawer for that bump in the night, the Smith & Wesson J frame “Chiefs Special” is one to consider. or much of the U.S. it is time to don winter coats, sweep the chimney and winterize the boat. As the temperature plummets, it’s easy for the mind to wander toward thoughts of warm sun and a beach escape. For the fishing crews in Nosara, Costa Rica, the forecast for the next 10 months is perfect sunshine and clear fishing weather. Best of all, this is the time of year when big dorado provide plenty for the Christmas dinner table. Here in Costa Rica, our fishing pattern resets each year. Ever since the rainy season ended in early November, we have seen large

schools of dorado stacked up like cordwood. Also, there are swarms of sailfish and the occasional marlin stalking these mahi-mahi meals. We expect this feeding pattern to continue until late-March when the dorado will be replaced by schools of yellowfin tuna moving in from the north. Gangs of spinning dolphins will show us the way to these tasty ahis, and once they show up the tuna bite will strengthen until our end-of-season in early September. Our offshore marlin, yellowfin and dorado all follow schools of bait that move from north to south along the Pacific coast. Conversely, our inshore fishery doesn’t depend on pelagic bait migration patterns. Instead our secluded port of Garza Bay is fed by local mountain rivers. When the cool, nutrient-rich river water collides with the warm, fast-moving saltwater of the Pacific, conditions are perfect for localized swarms of baitfish to form. This “homegrown” bait supports a ravenous population of big roosterfish, broomtail groupers and massive cubera snapper. It’s not unusual for these monsters to weigh upwards of 60 pounds yet still ascend the water column to strike on the surface. Roosterfish are in an especially catchable mood after a cool evening’s rain floods the estuary with fresh baits. Inshore or offshore, all are ripe for the catching, and captains of FishingNosara have posted excellent catches ever since the season started. Right off the bat, angler Brian Stafford, of Jacksonville, Fla. and his fellow firefighters nabbed a big batch of dorado on the 32-foot Wanderer. Catching these big beasts on the first day of the season is a great sign of what we imagine will be a “fishtastic” 2019 season. It’s always a great time be thankful for friends, family and the blessings in life, but with Christmas Day right around the corner, it is the right time to give the gift of fishing. If you have a youngster in the family, get them a tackle box and a starter reel. If you are already an avid angler, remember that Black Friday/Cyber Monday deals are great for expanding your arsenal. urf Expo’s Bluewater category launched last year as an examination of the crossover occurring between fishing brands and the larger market of coastal life. Since then, the show has become a must-attend event for fishing and boating retailers savvy enough to stay ahead of the trends water-loving consumers crave. The world’s largest and longest-running board and watersports show has packed the floor of its Bluewater—offshore, inshore and freshwater fishing—category headed into the Jan. 10-12 show at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando. Popular brands traditionally associated with the waterman and outdoor sporting lifestyle will show off their latest and greatest, giving retailers a hands-on first-look at the products that will drive the industry in 2019. Included in the Bluewater category are top brands like Bluewater sponsor Hell’s Bay Boatworks, Yeti, Otterbox, Fish Hippie, AFTCO, Guy Harvey, Marsh Wear, 5Fin, Salt Life, Bimini Bay, Hooked Soul, Heybo, XTRATUF, Dry Case, Bluewater Gear, Wave Life, Sunday Afternoons and more. Many of fishing’s big hitters will be there along with a huge contingent of brands that appeal to the on-the-water lifestyle. With the crossover evident in today’s marketplace, retailers and outfitters who target only their small niche are missing out on a powerful revenue source. Why sell to just the hardcore boater and angler when you could be unloading cool merchandise on the angler as well as his entire family? “The Bluewater section offers the opportunity for buyers to see the latest in trends for fishing and boating apparel and accessories at a time when retailers can leave their store,” said Kenneth Andres, with Surf Expo. “With our confluence from southern California, the Pacific Northwest, the Northeast, the Southeast, the Caribbean, Central and South America, this is a trend-setting show.” The economy is churning and consumer spending and confidence levels are higher than they have been for almost 20 years. Surf Expo is a timely opportunity for retailers to preview product for what promises to be a very busy spring season for fishing, boating and watersports retailers. “January is the best time to preview and order new product lines before the season starts,” said Andres. “Retailers can get out of their shops to talk with exhibitors and see and touch the product before they order, plus take advantage of early incentive discounts.” And for the angling marketplace, where there may be a down season but there is no off-season, Surf Expo will feature an array of exhibitors offering at-once product to fill the racks. This is an opportunity to stock the hottest new gear before the competition has even seen it. The show features more than 2,500 booths of apparel and hardgoods and a full line-up of special events, including fashion shows, awards ceremonies, education and demos. Average buyer and exhibitor turnout exceeds 28,600 attendees per show. And it’s a trade-only show, which eliminates the hubbub and massage-chair hawkers of open-to-the-public trade shows. Surf Show is intentionally held during retail down time—the January restocking period for outdoor-sports retailers—so it is a marketplace to get business done in a laid-back atmosphere. “When people come to the Surf Expo for the first time, they notice the relaxed, cool atmosphere. It’s that lifestyle we all buy into, and there are a lot of beautiful people at a surf show,” said Andres. “It’s just a great place to be if you’re in the watersports industry. E
very few years a new technique explodes on the bass fishing scene. Many of these trends just fade away, but some endure and become a part of every bass angler’s arsenal. The technique of the moment is the Ned rig. It is excellent for big numbers of spotted bass and smallmouths. It’ll catch largemouths, too. And it really shines when the fishing gets tough. On post-frontal days in winter, when bass are deep on vertical structure, it’s time to rig up a Ned and go to work. It is the perfect technique when bass are looking for a meal that is small and slow moving. A Ned rig is a miniature soft-plastic stick bait threaded on a light 1/8- to 1/32-ounce mushroom-style jighead. A drop of superglue holding the 3- to 5-inch worm to the jighead works wonders for making this rig durable. When fishing at winter depths, light line should be matched with a light spinning rod with a supple tip. Go as light as you dare, with 4- to 8-pound-test braid finished off with a fluorocarbon leader. When fish are active, a Ned worked steadily along the bottom is deadly. When they are sluggish, it’s better to let the jig sit on the bottom, allowing the bait’s vertical tail to do the work with the slightest shake of the rod tip. It’s not the most exciting way to fish, but it catches fish—sometimes when nothing else will.

hose who have seen his show “Man Fire Food” will recognize Roger Mooking as the iconic host of what has become the ultimate look at extreme outdoor or fire/smoke based cooking. Each week Roger introduces us to passionate and inventive outdoor cooking aficionados and an array of epic custom-built apparatuses designed to cook everything from 200-pound sturgeon to whole cows on a massive homemade spit. Roger’s visits give us insight into the innovative extremes outdoor cooks utilize in their pursuit of perfection. If you’re an outdoor cooking enthusiast, “Man Fire Food” is a must-watch program. We recently caught up with Roger to discuss the show’s success and rich content. CAM: Roger, your show has become a must-watch series for anyone who mans a grill. Why do you think your show has become so popular? Roger: Over the course of the last 7 seasons, we’ve seen an amazing array of outdoor and flame-inspired cooking devices and techniques featured on the show. If you love outdoor cooking, then you’re probably going to like the show. People just love being outside with loved ones. Backyard barbecues have been a longstanding tradition; in fact, you could say that tradition may even date back to the most primitive use of fire itself. There’s also something very special about slowing down and taking the time it demands to tend a hypnotizing fire and be immersed in the full experience, and getting to eat at the end of that entire adventure. The smells, sounds, sights of nature and breaking the hectic pace that a lot of us live at… it’s needed. CAM: So, you think cooking outdoors is somehow satisfying a primal urge? Roger: When I look back at some of the massive cuts of meat that have been prepared on previous episodes, it does seem like fire and food is primal, and I think we would all have to agree that cooking with wood, coals or heated rocks bridges a gap that is satisfying to those primal instincts.
CAM: What can we expect to see in future episodes? Roger: Humans all over the globe have been cooking with fire for many millennia now, and cultures all over the world have different ways of cooking with fire. I would like to explore extending the borders of the show to feature more places outside of the U.S. CAM: What advice would you offer the average outdoor cook? Roger: Just to enjoy the whole experience. I think the average outdoor cook is a more experienced cook, or else they would be a novice indoor cook. It takes a different level of attention to detail and mindfulness to cook outdoors because you have to deal with many other variables like wind, rain, keeping the fire going, how hot or cool is the fire, what are the hotspots, how much wood/charcoal do I need to add at a particular stage, bugs trying to get you, and all sorts of other things that you simply don’t have to worry about in a modern day North American kitchen with electricity and good shelter. Also, use the smoke as a seasoning advantage. You don’t need to add all kinds of stuff if you start with a freshly caught fish, some salt and a bit of good wood smoke; the work is already done, you just have to make sure you don’t get in the way or don’t burn the darn thing. It’s the magic of simplicity. CAM: How do you select the places that we see on the show? Roger: There is a very dedicated but small team of amazing people who find, research and vet all the potential locations for “Man Fire Food.” The winning candidates have endured hours of interviews and a barrage of questions as exhaustive as possible. The variables are so unimaginable to the viewer, and if we all do our jobs right, you have no idea how much work went into what looks so simple on TV. Feeding Strategies MARK SOSIN What appears obvious may be deceiving. Most anglers erroneously believe that when predators corner a hapless school of baitfish, they simply open their mouths and swim through the prey, gorging themselves in the process. It doesn’t happen that way. A predator must isolate and attack one specific victim at a time. That’s not always an easy task. A frantic school of baitfish sensing predators can appear as a shimmering mass of silver with each individual member of the school constantly changing position. Selecting a tasty morsel to ingest can frustrate even the most sophisticated gamefish. That’s one reason why you’ll find predators lurking under a pod of bait. The instant their intended prey strays from the pack, they strike. When you think about it, you can understand that any gamefish searches for a victim that is isolated, disabled or looks different from the others. Feeding is a tradeoff. Success centers on expending as little energy as possible for the food value received. Unsuccessfully chasing prey for long distances keeps a predator lean, hungry, and tends to slow it down. The easiest way to get a strike when you locate a school of baitfish starts with a cast into the middle of the school. It doesn’t matter whether you are fishing an artificial lure or a natural bait. The retrieve should work your offering toward the fringes of the school in basically the same direction in which the school is swimming or at a 45-degree angle to the basic direction. As your bait or lure eases toward the edge of the school, it is easier for a predator to isolate. And, it looks slightly different than the baitfish in the school. Some live bait fishermen squeeze a minnow before casting

it or drifting it so that it will be disabled. Clipping a fin or two also impairs swimming motion. The injured fish will have trouble swimming, and that means it will send out vibrations that attract the attention of predators. These frantic movements to obtain equilibrium frequently trigger the strike. Even during the anticipated feast of locating a school of baitfish, certain factors come into play. As water temperatures drop, a predator will not pursue its prey as fast and as far as it would in warmer water. When you are fishing a chum slick and fish are feeding on the chum, it is much more effective to fish an offering without retrieving it. A dead drift works just fine. I’ve seen that produce inshore and offshore including tuna and sailfish. I once had an opportunity to watch scientists monitor the behavior of a school of bluefish in a massive aquarium as they attacked a school of minnows. By chance, I focused on a minnow that did not move, even when attacked by a bluefish four times. Each time, the bluefish broke off the attack because the minnow did not behave as it should. On the fifth pass, the minnow moved and it was eaten faster than you can read this sentence. Finally, if you are trolling and see a school of small fish on the surface, approach the school slowly so as not to scare them. Ease alongside the school and work the fringes or establish a position ahead of the baitfish. If you prefer to cast, keep the boat away from the school and make the cast into the school. As you retrieve your offering and it begins to clear the fringes of the school, you should get a strike.
