CAST 2021 marked a return to normalcy for the fishing industry. In the 64th exhibition of the world’s largest sportfishing trade show, the halls of the Orlando’s Orange County Convention Center bustled with activity July 21-23. Live Bait Snook on South Florida Beaches

ere on Florida’s East Coast, we have access to some of the most exciting shore-based fishing there is. From spring, through summer and into fall, big snook run the beaches of South Florida, and they can be caught from the sand with lures and even sight fished with flies. I am a lure fisherman, and everyone knows it, but fishing with artificials can be difficult during the doldrums of late summer and fall. The Atlantic Ocean is flatter and big snook become wary. The fish are still here; what are we to do? Here’s a pretty simple technique that will catch snook when the fishing gets tough. The hottest bait this time of year is live croakers. Croakers are catching so many snook right now that the local bait shops here in the Stuart, Fla. area sell out as soon as they get a shipment. With the artificial bite kind of drying up, my friend and occasional fishing buddy, Mike Vars, showed me how to catch big snook on live bait. Mike buys a dozen croakers when he can get them. All you need to keep them alive for a couple days is a round bucket with an aerator. Good baitsized croakers are 5 to 8 inches, anything larger might catch a big snook, but they are harder to fish. Mike uses a 3 or 4 size circle hook and hooks his croakers through the nostrils so they can

swim freely. Some anglers prefer to hook them through the tail. Since the tactic involves free-lining, with no weight, casts should be just past the trough on a high tide, which is about 20 feet here. Then open the spool and let that croaker run. On low tide, it might be necessary to wade past the trough and cast farther out. Mike uses a 60-lb. leader and 20-lb. braid on a spinning reel. Before the snook takes the bait, the croaker will often wiggle excitedly—this is a signal you are about to get bit. When the line suddenly starts moving fast, it means a snook has your croaker. Let her have the bait for a few seconds, and then begin reeling steadily so the circle hook lodges in the corner of her mouth. The Mullet Run Is On! By CAM Staff

t’s that time of year again when the lowly mullet becomes a primary target of interest for Florida anglers. Over the next few weeks and months, mullet in untold numbers will migrate out of the estuaries and run down the coast to their spawning grounds off South Florida. The mullet run is on, and it has switched on the predatory drive of almost every fish in the ocean. From the beach, or on a jetty, pier, bridge or boat, anglers who encounter fish feeding in huge schools of mullet are in for a treat. These intrepid little pilgrims have made their way south from as far up as the Carolinas, and it’s a good thing they come in numbers, because a whole lot of them get gobbled up along the way. Snook, tarpon, flounder, redfish, sharks, bluefish, jacks, Spanish mackerel,

ladyfish… they all answer the dinner bell when mullet are balled up. To find the fish, you must find the bait. Young finger mullet make an easy meal when large schools of them are pinned against a jetty or are caught out in the open by predators running the beaches. Live or dead mullet are the obvious baits to fish if you’ve got time to throw a net, but don’t get caught cast-netting when there is a frenzy going on. A plug or soft-plastic will also get hammered when the melee is on. Don’t pass up your window of opportunity when the action is hot. Bait might be heavy in an area one day and gone the next. Anglers with boats can run the beaches in search of diving birds and find fish blowing up on top. Seawalls, rocky shorelines and other obstruction to the southward migration can serve as ambush points or corrals where baitfish are pinned in. Any structure that steers schools of mullet into a predictable path can turn into a killing ground. Shore-bound anglers must rely on good intel or just show up and hope to get lucky. Some prefer to pick a place that has been productive in the past and return frequently to catch it when it’s right. Others have a list of likely locations and eat up the road in search of activity. It’s the time of year when your gear should remain rigged and ready in the back of the truck. A good network of fishing buddies is worth its weight in tarpon during the run. Sharing good information on locations and the southward progression of bait is a two-way street. Take care of someone else, and they will likely take care of you. This time of year is a great time to be on the water. Temperatures are beginning to cool, most of the tourists have gone home, and thick waves of baitfish are there to be found, running the coastline with big predators in hot pursuit. s fall approaches, fish patterns change. By understanding the habits of fish, you can target them with confidence. Spring fry have matured in the marsh and are ready to move into open water. Knowing the timing, tides and location of this migration can lead to great action. I recently tried a new area. It’s a place I really hadn’t heard anything about. I planned to target reds, since satellite imagery suggested it should be favorable. This area had a long meandering bayou that emptied into a small lake, which ranged in depth from 1 to 3 feet. I was at the top of a chain of lakes and marsh, so this particular drain would see the first of the baitfish and shrimp exiting their summer home. Targeting the inland-most marshes and bayous early in the season will be the most productive. Follow the bait and schools of fish out as the season advances. Although the reds were there, they were only 12 inches long, and the trout were smaller. They were gorging on shad and shrimp as tide poured out of the bayou into the lake. Once I noticed flounder busting completely out of the water attacking the schools of shad, I quickly changed my retrieve. I had been working my soft-plastic swimbait high in the water column to keep it in the bait balls. When I saw those flounder, I immediately lowered my rod tip and began vigorously twitching my rod down and to the side to make the jig head hit the mud bottom hard. Kicking up clouds of silt attracts flatfish. I started landing flounder immediately with the new retrieve. It was obvious they were aggressive since they were going airborne to feed on shad. This is why I worked the lure hard and fast, unlike a traditional flounder retrieve. I’m not sure how many I caught, released and lost, but it was well into double digits. The most productive color was white or pearl to mimic shad. Since they were attacking schools of bait, I tied on a tandem rig using the same lures. I think the presentation looked more like the schools of baitfish they were targeting. Paying attention to the details of the location, season and tide, as well as how the fish were feeding all played a huge part in my success. Sailﬁsh Marina Big Dog Fat Cat KDW Shootout Recap The Big Dog Fat Cat KDW Shootout is a tournament that challenges anglers to fish for a greater purpose. It is the fastest growing KDW tournament in Palm Beach County since 2010. 226 boats fished in this year’s 12th annual tournament and over 4,000 people attended the 2 day event. The festivities began Friday evening at the captain’s meeting and continued Saturday with some very competitive fishing, the weighin, and award ceremony and dinner; all held at the beautiful Sailfish Marina. Participants and attendees enjoyed a silent auction, raffles, delicious food, 3 bars, and the Sidewalk Celebration with 30 vendors. The beneficiaries of this year’s event received over $27,000 were Growing Together Farm and A Second Chance Puppies and Kittens Rescue. Growing Together Farm, based out of Loxahatchee, is a nonprofit that helps schools grow vegetables and fruit for children. A Second Chance Puppies and Kittens Rescue is a nonprofit, all volunteer, foster based rescue group that saves pregnant or nursing dogs and cats and their offspring until adopted into forever homes. 17 dogs (who were temporarily named after teams that had participated in the KDW) were adopted at the event. The grand prize winner was team Lori Jo as their 43lb. wahoo caught early in the morning off the Boynton Inlet won the team $5,000 plus $8,000 in prizes; including a Humminbird unit, Cannon Downriggers, an Airmar gift certificate, a Marine Electronic Solution gift certificate, and a Grey Taxidermy gift certificate. Spiced Rum was the 1st place aggregate with 130.4lbs. as well as Top SKA boat with a 33.9lb. kingfish. They caught over 30 kingfish on their Cannon Optimum Downriggers. “Having the electronic downriggers is a must. Our Solix Humminbird unit kept us on the fish that were in a 2 mile stretch. We were able to stay on the bait and our numbers.” said Bill Wummer. Spiced Rum took home $2,500 plus a $2,500 Loadmaster Trailer gift certificate. FISHINGFORECAST FISHING WITH DARCIZZLE By Darcie Arahill Contributing Writer

Offshore fishing has been hit or miss this past month, hopefully September will bring much needed changes to the water conditions! Time is of the essence when you’re planning a fishing trip this month; get out there as early as possible to catch the dawn bite! The surface water temps warm up quickly during the first hour of daybreak therefore it is important to have lines in the water before the fish swim to deeper water to escape the heat. Within the next few weeks, the mullet run/fall bait migration will take place, which will be fairly easy to cast net bait in the ICW. In the meantime, large numbers of threadfins and pilchards can be found around the mouth of Boynton Beach and Palm Beach Inlet. Another exciting fish to target this month will be the wahoo! Last month, the full moon produced a good number of wahoo. The sharks have been terrible lately, eating all the fish you hook when bottom fishing or drifting. Targeting wahoo on the troll is a nice change of pace and you cover a lot of ground. The impending September full moon will give you another opportunity to catch one if you haven’t already. If you like to high speed troll, I would recommend using Ballyhood lures such as the Banshee Cowbell or Wahoo Express Lures. When the conditions are favorable and wahoo are thick, they will attack any lure you are pulling past them. Wahoo fishing gives you an incredible adrenaline rush, especially when you feel the head shakes while reeling in the fish and hand lining them through the transom door.

For the anglers that prefer reef or wreck fishing, this month should also produce a good bottom bite. I would suggest using a ‘sinking line’ which means a 15ft, 60 to 80lb leader on a swivel, and a heavy sinker to hold the bottom. The hook you use depends on the type of bait you prefer to fish the bottom with. When fishing on one of these structures, you will catch big amberjack, assorted snapper including nice sized mutton snapper, along with a few groupers or even a wahoo. Inshore fishing should be on FIRE with the mullet run right around the corner! You can use mullet to fish for snook, tarpon, jacks, and trout. Small finger mullets are also perfect for snook, which are being caught and released throughout the day around the inlets right now as the spawning season comes to an end. Good luck anglers! SOUTH COUNTY INSHORE & FRESHWATER By Capt. Patrick Smith Contributing Writer

Here we are in September which can be a major month for bait migrations. Everything from the tiny anchovies to big schools of silver mullet should be working their ways down the beach. There’s no good way of predicting it other than reports from the north and trying to time the movements which never really works out, but when you’re out there and it’s happening the action can be mine blowing. Make sure you get up to speed on throwing a cast net and have a reel that can hold a lot of line. The name of the game is match the hatch. If you’re cruising the beach looking for schools of anchovies, you’ll probably want to have a white gulp tied on with just enough of a jig head to make as long of a cast as possible. Be persistent, work through the schools and you will catch everything from jacks and ladyfish to monster tarpon and snook. I really like having a well full of mullet first thing in the morning because everything eats them. You can bump troll a mullet along the reef and catch sailfish, kingfish, mahi, and just about anything else. After you’re done doing that head to the beach or into the Intracoastal and toss them to seawalls or just patrol around the channels. It usually doesn’t take long to get tight but if you’re not having any luck with the live mullet, it never hurts to put one on the bottom, especially right in the middle of the school. Big fish are lazy and will often pick up scraps as they swim around. FISHINGFORECAST PALM BEACH IN & OFFSHORE By Capt. Weston Russell Contributing Writer

Welcome to the September fishing forecast for West Palm Beach, Singer Island, Palm Beach Shores, and Juno Beach. The wahoo bite was hot in August, and it will continue in September. The second week with the coming of the full moon should be the best time to hi-speed troll. The crack of dawn is best and dragging a split tail mullet on a red and black skirt will prove to be successful. Some of the best wahoo fishing is from The Breakers to the end of the condos in water 100’ to 250’. Reef junkies, the bottom bite will be on from Lost Tree Village to Juno Pier. If you like to put fish in the cooler, try fishing a chicken rig. This is a small two hook rig; when tipped with squid chunks, it will catch everything that swims on the reef. Sometimes when fishing the reef, file fish swim up to the boat. They make great table fare but are challenging to hook. When you get one hooked get in the boat fast, they are very good at jumping off the hook. Inshore, the mullet run will start this month with hungry predators in tow. Tarpon, large jacks, and spinner sharks will be crashing schools along the beach. Don’t forget your cast net. You will get your best bite on the outside of the school or below it. Light tackle is the way to fish; light leaders and small hooks should produce the best bites. Good luck and remember, you can’t catch them from the couch.

Hello anglers, I hope you all have been doing well and catching a bunch of fish! Unfortunately, I have not been fishing much lately. This is due to us still not having a boat to fish in. We went with a dark grey color scheme on the wrap, and it includes a storm with a bunch of frigate birds on it. It looks sick! While we are waiting for the boat, my mom and I, and my friend Captain Weston Russell and her family, went to the bioluminescent kayak tours in Cocoa Beach. Pods of bait will be on the beach as well as getting pushed into the rivers and lagoon. OFFSHORE: Kingfish and sailfish will be the most common catches for September. Live bait like goggle eyes and blue runners will work well. Slow troll these baits from 80 to 180 feet using a standard wire kingfish rig or 6/0 circle hook. There may be a few tunas around if you are looking to vertical jig. Keep moving to different depths to find which one seems to be holding them. Start in 200 feet and do not be afraid to search to 500 feet.

The River Center Reels in Another Successful Tournament!

The Jr. Angler Fishing Tournament returned for its eighth year this summer with 63 registered anglers participating in the month-long competition. This tournament spans multiple weeks to allow anglers time to catch as many fish as possible. Points are awarded not only for the number of fish caught, but also for the number of different species represented in the submissions. The more fish you catch and the more species you catch, the better your chances are to win! These innovative guidelines encourage contestants to spend time throughout the summer exploring the diversity of habitats and fish species in our Palm Beach and Martin Counties, all while honing their fishing skills. Participants reeled in over 4,800 fish! In hopes of accommodating all interested participants, both fresh and salt water photo submissions were accepted. Some kids enjoyed fishing from the lake in their backyard for a trophy bass, while others preferred heading offshore in hopes of reeling in snappers. It was important for the tournament to cater to each angler’s preferences. A hearty congratulation goes out to the grand prize winner, Cameron Burlage, who managed to reel in 548 fish and caught 54 different species! With such an awesome turnout and interest in the tournament, the River Center hopes to continue building on this accomplishment. We are already looking forward to next year’s competitive and educational summer adventure. ECOTOURISM By Capt. Chris Thalmann Contributing Writer Hello and welcome to September! It’s been a while since we had a sea turtle update in this column, so I thought we’d take a look at how things are tracking so far this year. While we’re approaching the end of nesting season on October 31st, there are still quite a few turtles around. This means there may be quite a bit of nesting activity yet to come! October 31st doesn’t mean much to a sea turtle, and nesting activity often continues well into November. As of mid-August, researchers have recorded about 15,000 sea turtle nests on northern Palm Beach County beaches. 2021 is on track to be a solid year though it likely won’t reach the levels seen in 2020 and 2019. That’s not necessarily reason for concern - 2019 was a record shattering year and 2020 was - well - it was 2020. The shutdowns of 2020 weren’t exactly great for people. But for sea turtles, having fewer people on the beaches might have led to higher rates of successful nesting. Sea turtles are easily startled, and they can be very particular about where they choose to nest. Debris or holes on the beach, steep beaches or sand dunes, exposed rocks, lights, loud noises, and the presence of people can all be deterrents to successful nesting. Other natural factors can also affect nesting for many years into the future. Cold-weather will sometimes kill huge numbers of adult sea turtles, while hurricanes and other storms can destroy nests before hatchlings can even emerge. These events can represent generational losses - meaning generations of sea turtles may just be lost. It can take many years for populations to recover from losses like these. Traditionally there hasn’t been much people can do about natural losses - although in 2018 and 2019, volunteers helped excavate and move hundreds of unhatched turtle nests ahead of oncoming hurricanes. And in early 2021, many more helped rescue thousands of adult sea turtles from deadly cold conditions along the Gulf Coast. Without help from people, it’s certain tens of thousands more sea turtles would have succumbed to generational losses. Sea turtles don’t have a great rate of survival as it is. Florida’s FWC estimates only about 1/10th of 1% survive to adulthood - that’s about 1 out of every 1,000 turtles. So, when people can help protect the survival of adult turtles in particular - the effect can be huge! Fortunately, there are some pretty easy ways to help. If you’re boating, wear polarized sunglasses and have someone watch for turtles just ahead of your boat. Slowing down helps too, especially when traveling between Lake Worth and Jupiter Inlets. Turtles pop up for air often and despite their size and shells, they’re no match for a boat. Take your time and enjoy a relaxed cruise - your reward may just be some late-season turtle spotting. Fishing Live Shiners 101

By Mark Ambert Contributing Writer Whenever I post a picture of a peacock bass, so many people ask “what kind of lures or bait are you using to catch those beautiful fish?” For the most part, I stick to lure fishing unless conditions require the use of bait. This is purely a personal preference and no reflection on which is better. Both play a role in the success of an angler. When I switch to bait however, I have one primary goal – to minimize the impact to fish being caught. I practice catch and release for all freshwater species. With this in mind, I decided to write an article covering the basics of live shiner fishing. Not everybody catches fish using live bait although many believe it to be a surefire way to catch fish. There are no guarantees in fishing! General conditions that mandate the use of live bait for me usually start and end with weed beds. When a lake or canal is covered in weeds it can be very difficult to fish a lure porperly for success, especially if your target is peacocks and from shore. Peacock bass like things moving fast and with a minnow profile. They shy away from weedless plastic rigs for the most part. Live bait is a great option under these conditions and works great for most any fish. To begin with I use an ultralight spin rod and reel for this type of fishing. I prefer a 7’ rod that I can use “cane pole” style to drop a shiner just outside a weedbed from shore. I use 20lb. PowerPro braid for the main line and 20lb. Seagur Gold Label Fluorocarbon 4’ leader. I for the most part, do not use bobbers but let my shiners swim naturally. Now this is where it gets specific. I use only one hook type and size very specific to catch and release with shiners as the primary bait. Owner Mossquito Circle Hooks in size #4. This is a very small hook and smaller than what most would consider using. This is the secret to solid hookups, and safe catch and release. This hook is so small as not to adversely effect the fish. Using a three second count for setting the hook, most fish are caught right in the lip area where the hook can be easily removed. When the occasional fish swallows the hook just clip the line at the hook and leave it. I have never seen a fish hurt in this manner – the hook is very small and will work its way out of the fish quickly. If a big fish is on the end of your line – set the drag appropriately, as the smaller hook may pull out under extreme pressure. I’ve landed many big fish using the rod properly, and with a lighter drag during the fight. When fishing live shiners, I prefer small to mid size baits. They seem to hold up The better to repeated casting and are more lively in the water. I do not allow the shiner essentials to bury his nose in a weedbed, so pay attention to what it’s doing. I cast just beyond to have you the weedline and allow them to swim freely. They will usually “duck for cover” and live bait a gentle lift of the rod tip will clear them of the weeds. I keep them moving at all fishing in no times by using the rod to lift them then recasting. This is key. Once a shiner is cast time. repeatedly it will appear to be dead. This is the time to use them tight to shore and in thicker coverage. They will no longer try to swim for cover but float just under the surface. Now is the time to fish them like you would any stick bait. Impart action by gently twitching the bait as you reel them in slowly. This technique is deadly and has produced more big fish than a lively shiner that has to be chased. Big fish are lazy and conserve energy. They rarely chase down a meal. They have the patience to just let the meal come to them. I always buy more shiners than I think I’ll need for a days fishing. If you are fishing a known productive area with little or no success take two or three small live shiners and toss them in. This will ususally fire up the fish. Toss in your hooked offering and hang on! These same techniques outlined here will work for almost any live swimming bait. Always practice safe handling of the fish during catch and release. Minimize the fight and time the fish spends out of the water. If taking pictures place the fish back in the water between shots to keep it lively. Use these smaller hooks to minimize mortality and all will be well! You now know the basics to catch and safely release that fish of a lifetime using live shiners!

ASeptember signifies that the mullet run is upon us. The migratory mullet runs brings explosive action for anglers targeting a plethora of species. Snook can be targeted in the inlets, beaches, grass flats, along seawalls, and docks. Top water action is a blast during the bait run. A Rapala Skitter Walk is an excellent choice for surface strikes. D.O.A. C.A.L. 4” Jerk Baits and D.O.A. Bait Busters entice snook to strike near surface and sub surface. The mullet schools are great areas to locate snook, typically mornings and evenings are the best times to fish. Bridges and docks provide plenty of action. Channel edges will produce plenty of drag screaming action as well. The snook may gather in pods at times, many of the bigger female snook are on the outside of these pods. The average size of the snook ranges from 5 to 25 pounds. Tarpon offer heart pounding action for anglers, with acrobatic leaps on Jake with a redfish.

the water’s surface after devouring a live mullet on the surface. Many of the tarpon are schooled together and can be seen rolling on the surface. The average size of the tarpon ranges from 10 to 100 pounds. The best bait to use for tarpon is live mullet or pin fish. The flats and ICW are great areas to target snook, jacks, goliath grouper, drum, and many other species for rod bending action. Structure areas or potholes along grass flats, hold bait schools where predator fish will follow. For those anglers who want steady action, nothing beats a live mullet, just cast one out along drop offs or structure and hold on tight. Nothing beats seeing a predator fish explode on a live bait, it puts a smile on everyone’s face. Well, that is the fishing report for September. This month, Juno Beach Pier (JBP) kicks off snook season for anglers to start fervently catching this all-star fish. Venturing from mangroves, snook can be found in Intracoastal Waterways as temperatures continue to rise. Stake your spot on the JBP in the hopes of reeling in this popular game fish with bait such as pinfish, small mullet, greenbacks, and sardines – or lures. If you find yourself leaving the pier lucky, consider moonlighting as a chef by brushing the clean snook with fresh ingredients of garlic, olive oil and zesty lemon juice with salt and pepper to taste. Mangrove snappers or gray snappers can also be found near the pier this month. These fish are aptly named since they can be found near mangroves and other structures, including reefs and seagrass. These guys will come biting with live and cut bait such as cigar minnows, pilchards, pin fish, and grunts. Generally, when catching this fish inshore, mangrove snappers average between 10 and 14 inches in length with an average weight of 1 to 2 lbs. However, the state record for the largest gray snapper caught offshore is a whopping 17 lbs.! Despite snook season, the usual suspects can still be found at the JBP. Anglers can catch the year-round Spanish mackerel by using live bait on lures and jigs. Spanish mackerel tend to spot quick moving bait, however, cut bait like squid, shrimp, and mullets can get the job done. In similar fashion, crevalle jacks and blue runners veer toward live and cut bait with lures. For blue runners, we suggest fish, shrimp, or squid as bait. Lastly, Atlantic croakers are nothing new and prefer crustaceans, mollusks, and small fish. Try using whiting, sand perch, or squid strips also as bait to catch croakers.

Throughout sea turtle nesting season in Palm Beach County, the JBP adjusts its angling and spectator hours to accommodate nesting and hatching sea turtles. From March 1 through October 31, the pier opens a half hour before sunrise and closes at sunset each day. Turn to Loggerhead Marinelife Center (LMC) and Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission for best practices regarding sea turtle safety. As part of LMC’s Responsible Pier Initiative, the JBP practices sustainable fishing and recycling. When you have a few hours to enjoy your boat, do you want to waste time at the fuel dock? Wouldn’t you rather be wetting a line, or cruising your favorite waterway?

So here is the low down on fishing on the “Nature Coast”! It’s one of the most beautiful and treacherous places you’ll ever fish. Although, it’s a must fish bucket list location. It’s considered sub-tropical from a climate perspective and has rivers, creeks, oyster beds, limestone rocks, lush sea grass beds, and all the inshore as well as offshore species to target. Basically from Tarpon Springs north to Apalachicola beaches do not exist which makes these areas way less populated. If you want to experience what old Florida must have looked like just jump in the truck and head over. A good friend and fishing buddy of mine just retired and is building a house near Bayport with a dock and boat lift in the backyard. He is currently renting a house in Hudson, and I was able to visit for a few days of fishing. He has a 22 ft Pathfinder that’s loaded and gets in pretty shallow even with all the extras it has been equipped with. I got there around 4:30 in the afternoon and the tide was coming in and almost high. We went out to an area reasonably close to the house. Once we arrived at the first spot it was apparent that the water was very shallow and wading was going to take the place of the boat. I spotted some tailing fish up shallow and was excited since it’s been forever having seen fish tail (usually that’s saved for Louisiana these days). I waded to them, and it was a nice school of black drum. If you’ve fished for black drum before you know they can be hard to catch on artificial. I had a small Paddle Tail that they wanted no part of. Even though we didn’t get any of them to bite it was awesome to be so close to them and making casts, hoping to get a bite. The next day we decided to fish early based on the tide and tried another area around the mangrove edges. Since it was early, I had to throw a topwater and it did its job. I had several nice snook blow up on it and landed several as well. The Super Spook Jr. is my favorite but I’m sure whatever you prefer would have worked fine. My buddy caught several snook on a D.O.A. Paddle Tail. All in all, the morning was great and by lunch we were grilling burgers. The third day was cut short due to a thunderstorm, but I’m sure the fishing would’ve been good otherwise. My buddy caught a redfish in the grass out in front of the mangroves before the storm ran us off. I can’t wait to go back and really fish hard one day soon. By Capt. Nate Shellen Contributing Writer We are right in the middle of what the old-timers call the dog days of summer. Water temperatures in the shallows of Lake Okeechobee have risen into the mid-to-high 80’s to low 90’s. The deeper canals, the Kissimmee River, and the moving water sections of the lake are several degrees cooler. In order to continue to catch bass, it is necessary to either fish the current or in the shade. Bass are like people in that they react to bright sunlight in similar ways like looking for shade. Bass will hold underneath the edges of a steep drop-off or hydrilla wall. A bait presented tight to that wall will often draw a reaction strike from the fish. Many areas in the Rim Canal have rocky edges and over the years the wave action has eroded the ground underneath the rocks forming an underwater ledge where bass will hold just out of the sunlight. With the ultra-warm water, the hydrilla fields in the lake have proliferated and are actually growing right to the edges of the depth changes in the lake. Even the deep water canals have hydrilla lines forming along the edges which offer shade for bass. Of course, deep water offers shade too, but our best fishing is still in the shallow water of the main lake. Our morning fishing trips find us on the water just as the sun starts to rise. Each morning we start with a topwater bait of some sort. A Pop-R, Chug Bug, Tiny Torpedo, or a walking style bait have all worked well at different times. Some days we catch as many as 20 to 25 bass on topwater offerings. Other days we may only catch 5 to 10 fish before the sun gets high and they refuse to rise and hit the bait. In that case, it’s necessary to change to a bait that gets deeper in the water column, many times right on the bottom. Skinny Dippers, Swim Senkos, plastic worms, and flukes are all part of our arsenal. Captain’s tip: As a rule, always use the lightest weight possible when fishing with plastics. It won’t inhibit the action built into the bait. As the water temperature has increased over the last month, we have found ourselves using heavier weights to get the bait right on the bottom in the face of the fish. We are also finding better success by using a slower presentation. Inch the bait along to keep it in the strike zone for as long as possible. The water level has risen just enough that the outside grass lines are fishable. It requires shutting down the boat well offshore of the spot and idling into fish, but it is well worth the effort.

The light at the end of the tunnel is starting to flicker through the darkness, just starting that is. What I am talking about is the nationwide ammo shortage that has been playing on this country now for a better part of a year and a half. We are at the point, to a degree, that if you look a little you will now be able to find the ammunition that you are needing. However, it may not be the exact brand you want, or the exact make up of bullet that you may have had in the past, but you will find something similar. Now what I am talking about in the exact bullet department is that hunters like and use the bullet which they feel is best for their needs, the game in which they are going after, or even more importantly what their rifle likes the best. Rifles have their own personality when it comes to what that specific rifle likes. For example, a Remington 30-06 might prefer a 150gr bullet over a 165gr bullet, or vice versa. So that hunter who has been looking for 150gr Federal Ammunition might only find 150gr Winchester Ammunition. All this means is that this individual will have to get to the range and may have to adjust the scope to the new ammo. Not the end of the world but it’s time consuming to someone who may find it hard to get out and do that. Handgun ammo for the ranges and to purchase has lightened up a lot. Prices have dropped now down to a more realistic amount, as the 9mm which is by far the nation’s most popular handgun ammo is now running 20 to 25 dollars for a box of 50. Shotgun ammo is still slow though, where it seems like the clay target ammo has not come around yet, it has gotten better but not as easily to find as the others. It’s getting better out there, not where we want it at, but after a year and a half it has improved immensely.

he end of summer is here, and the fishing is a little tough. From fishing pressure through the summer to warm water temps, this time of year can be a grind at times. Fish tend to get a little lock-jawed, and this can be really frustrating. When this scenario presents itself, I pull out a spinning rod, downsize my line and bait, and slow down my presentation to get finicky fish to eat. One of my favorite techniques this time of year is a drop shot. My drop shot rig consists of a weight tied to the end of the line with a hook and soft plastic tied in about 12 to 18 inches above the weight. There are two styles of baits I like to drop shot. One of them is a finesse-style worm like the 13 Fishing Rabbit Ear Joy Stick Ultra Thin 4.5’ worm. I like a worm on my drop shot when I’m targeting largemouth, especially in Southern states. These fish are usually feeding on a little bit larger forage, and the finesse worm is a perfect fit. Rig this worm on a 1/0 Hayabusa FPP Straight hook with a 1/4or 3/8-oz. WOO Tungsten weight for the perfect presentation. The other soft plastic I like on a drop shot is a small baitfish imitator. The 13 Fishing Vertigo Minnow gets a ton of bites. When you find fish chasing small baitfish or you’re up north where there are smallmouth bass, this style of soft plastic gets the job done. Rig it on a Hayabusa DSR132 #1 hook with a ¼ or 3/8-oz. WOO Tungsten weight, as well.

I take a 5-lb. box of squid on every trip offshore for a number of reasons, but this is one of the main reasons. Using a small 1/0 circle hook, double tackle and a 2- or 3-oz. bank sinker, you can harvest grouper bait and dinners deluxe. I count the strips it takes to get to the fish. This is also where multi-colored line can come into play. Drop your bait down to the same color where they were hitting, and then start a very slow descent. These fish like to eat bait as it falls. When you feel the tap or the bait just stops falling, click the reel into gear and let the circle hook do its work. When you get them working upward in the water column, keep them going. es, everyone wants to catch a grouper, or three, but you should be prepared—tackle-wise—to come home with “the groceries.” One way to accomplish this is to keep a beeliner/triggerfish rig ready on a rod and to have someone willing to use it when you get on the right mark. Not all big stacks of bait on the recorder are beeliners and triggerfish, but get accustomed to it and you’ll have a pretty good idea of what you’re looking at. The bigger species of the reef complex tend hang out under a big stack of bait, like cigar minnows, sardines, beeliners, etc. But the truth of the matter is, what you might be looking for is near the top of the stack. For example, the larger beeliners might sometimes be the first taps you get on your jig as it drops toward the bottom. When I’m grouper fishing, I fish a revolving spool reel rather than a spinning reel for several reasons. The main reason is so I can feel the bait as it drops. If you feel the bait on the jig getting tapped on the way down, understand that you’re in beeliners, triggers and/or American reds. At that point, it’s up to you to capitalize or just continue to grouper fish for grouper only. If you choose to do it, you can load up on some pretty tasty groceries by sizing down your tackle. I take a 5-lb. box of squid on every trip offshore for a number of reasons, but this is one of the main reasons. Using a small 1/0 circle hook, double tackle and a 2- or 3-oz. bank sinker, you can harvest grouper bait and dinners deluxe. I count the strips it takes to get to the fish. This is also where multi-colored line can come into play. Drop your bait down to the same color where they were hitting, and then start a very slow descent. These fish like to eat bait as it falls. When you feel the tap or the bait just stops falling, click the reel into gear and let the circle hook do its work. When you get them working upward in the water column, keep them going. iyeeeeee, yeeee, yeeee, yeee!” The shout sounded Cajun, or perhaps like the intro to a mariachi tune. Either way, it amplified the chaos on deck. Three rods were bent. Two anglers scrambled to uncross lines screaming off reels. A third angler dove to wrap an arm around the 10-year-old who held a death grip on rod number three. It was a tossup as to whether the kid would lose the rod or be yanked overboard into a very active chum slick. The whole scene unraveled when a 10-foot tiger shark rose to the surface. It smashed the boy’s cobia straight through the surface, blowing up close enough to drench us, maybe 15 feet off the stern. There was stunned silence, then... “Ayeeee, yeeee, yeeee, yeeee!” our captain hollered. “I love chaos!” Man, what a trip. It was a lot more than my two brothers and I expected upon reconnecting with a childhood friend in Bluffton, South Carolina. Our captain, Keene Reese, is a successful real estate agent with Ussery Group, Charter One Realty in the Lowcountry. He is also a very fishy dude. In mid-June, he invited us—along with my 10-year-old son— on a 20-mile ride offshore, where cobia were thick on a well-known wreck. With a beautiful chum slick snaking off the stern of Reese’s 25’ Regulator “Copacetic,” it didn’t take 10 minutes for “brownies” to start showing on the surface. There was no need for down-lines that day. All the action was on top, visible and simple. Pitch a live menhaden on a freeline, and a cobia would take it before you reached the rod holder. Over the course of a few hours, we boated well over a dozen cobia,

although the action came in such crazy spurts that no one could keep count. The thing is, we only landed four fish longer than the 36-inch minimum. That’s good news, according to Mel Bell, the director of Fisheries Management with South Carolina DNR. For decades, South Carolina was famous for its inshore cobia runs. May is the peak of a spawning run that once saw scads of cobia pushing into Port Royal Sound, Calibogue Sound, St. Helena Sound and the Broad River. Bell said boats lined up to target big eggbearing females before they could reproduce. The fishery collapsed. “We were in a bad place in 2016,” Bell said. “The numbers were scary. Even the anglers were telling us we had to do something.” While overall Atlantic cobia stocks are in good shape, according to the latest assessment, Bell said sound-spawners in South Carolina are a distinct “sub-population.” The Southern Cobia Management Zone was formed in 2016 to protect these inshore-spawning fish. The zone stretches from Jeremy Inlet on Edisto Island, S.C. south to the Georgia border. It extends three miles offshore, and within this zone there is a one fish per person, three per boat daily limit—except in May, when cobia harvest is closed. The limit in federal waters is one per person, six per boat. The minimum length is 36 inches, which brings us back to all the short fish. Bell said South Carolina DNR isn’t ready to release hard data. However, he’s heard fishermen reporting lots of smaller fish, which are likely the age classes protected since 2016. If anecdotes translate into survey data, it would mean the restrictions are working. Bell said next year might be time to take a close look and see just how well cobia are returning to the sounds. THREE WAYS TO TARGET

BIG CATS

f you like the feel of really big fish on the end of a line, catfish are a good option. There are several different types, but trophy hunters set their sights on blue and flathead catfish. Both species grow large and can weigh in excess of 100 pounds. For bait, catfish have been caught on just about everything you can think of. But generally, big flatheads are predators and like whole, live, hand-sized bream. Blues like large cut bait like bream, skipjack or carp. Once you’ve got your bait, here are some ideas for how to fish it. Fish a Fan: My favorite technique is to anchor up in a good spot near rocky bottom or structure such as a ledge, river channel or creek bed. I have 14 Driftmaster 255 H Pro Duo rod holders, which I use to put out a fan of baits on Penn Fathom reels and medium to heavy rods. These are spooled with 80-pound PowerPro braid. The terminal end is a weight slide on the main line then a swivel and a 3- to 5-foot leader, with a Gamakatsu 8/0 circle hook on the end. These are the rigs I use to fish Cabela’s King Kat tournaments. They are heavy duty because you never know when a 100-pound monster will show up. Back-Trolling: On big rivers, back-trolling can be very effective. Use your trolling motor in reverse to slow

the boat’s drift in the current and present baits to catfish holding on the bottom. Bottom bouncing is Bill Dance’s preferred method on the Mississippi River. It’s also very popular on the Tennessee River. It allows you to keep your bait about a foot off the bottom and bounce it to fish facing upstream. Tie a three-way swivel to a mainline of 40- to 80-lb. braid. On the bottom eye of the swivel, tie in 12 inches of 20-lb. mono drop line and attach a bank sinker. The drop line should be lighter than your main line so you can save the rest of the rig when your sinker gets caught. On the third eye, use a 2- to 3-foot piece of the same line as your main line and attach a 6/0 to 12/0 circle hook, depending on the size of your bait. Drift Fishing: Drift fishing is very popular on big lakes like Santee Cooper in South Carolina. On windy days, set all your rods on one side of the boat with weights that will slide along the bottom. Pencil, Lindy and slinky sinkers all work well for this. If the wind pushes the boat too fast, deploy driftsocks to slow the boat. If you don’t have driftsocks, 5-gallon buckets work in a pinch.
