o all flounder migrate offshore during the winter? I can’t be certain, but I have caught them in every month of the year. Those latewinter catches may have been flounder that never left, or they might be some that returned early. But one thing is for sure, during cold weather is when I have caught my largest flounder. Let it be known that I am a lure fisherman at heart, but if you want to consistently target the largest flounder this time of year, live and dead bait rule supreme. A large mullet or shad in the 6-inch range is ideal. Any type of fishfinder rig will suffice with the appropriate weight for the depth of water and strength of current you are fishing. You just need enough weight to keep your bait in contact with the bottom, where flounder live. The method I use for flounder catching is to keep the bait in constant contact with the bottom. Pointing the rod tip toward the water and utilizing a sweeping motion, I twitch my rod, kicking up mud and sand to create a trail of dust that attracts fish. This way I can cover some water in search of a hungry doormat. Once I feel the first tap from the flounder, I pause. I wait patiently for the second and usually a quick third tap. Then I give it a solid hook-set! Flounder will hold on to a bait longer than most inshore species, and they don’t always engulf it all at once. I feel they want to injure their meal before swallowing it, which is why it pays to be patient and wait until they’ve got the hook in their mouth before driving the point home. The best area to target the largest of the species is near structure, specifically bulkheads. Flounder like to bed down next to seawalls, where baitfish have fewer angles of escape. Other structure like rock jetties are also great areas to try. On an outgoing tide, I target drain openings where high tide flows out of the marshes. These drains can be small, 1 to 2 feet of width is all it takes. As long as the marsh behind the drain has enough water to hold bait, it’s perfect. Flounder will stage at the opening of a large drain as well, but no drain is too small, and I feel the smaller ones can easily be dismissed and easily missed. One final note is on tide direction and strength. During a strong outgoing tide, flounder use the tide as easy transportation to open water and focus more on swimming than feeding. I tend to avoid the strong outgoing tide when targeting migrating flounder. Be safe, stay warm, and get out there to catch the largest flounder of your life.

KAYAKING FOR

A DAY OF DOUBLES By Brian Nelli

n offshore kayak fishing, many of the milestones we pursue come in the form of knocking off “bucket list” fish. Sailfish is at the top of that list for a lot of anglers in South Florida. The sailfish is a great achievement, but there is one fish that many either write off as improbable or just a dream. That fish is the wahoo. One of the fastest fish in the ocean, it bounces around in kayak anglers’ heads with the question of could today be the day. I’ve been a South Florida kayak fishing guide since 2010. Here, where the currents of the Gulf Stream swing so close to coast, it is possible to launch a kayak from the beach in pursuit of offshore species. I have been fortunate to assist clients in catching multiple wahoo over the years. To give an idea of how special this is, my best year for wahoo saw just six of these speedy fish landed in 150 offshore kayak trips. Now what do you think the chances are of catching two in one trip? How about two at the same time? That is where our story begins. Two days after the December new moon phase, winds were light and the ocean was flat calm. My two clients and I were running live goggle eyes on 60-pound wire stinger rigs tied to 40-pound Yozuri Hybrid Line. We were geared with Shimano Spheros 10k reels paired with Crowder Rods E-Namic 6’6” 15- to 40-pound rods. At dawn, we headed roughly a mile from shore and started slow trolling. All hell broke loose within the first hour. It was a double hook-up on sailfish! The fish pulled my two clients in opposite directions. After screaming directions and running back and forth to each angler, we managed to secure both fish for a great photo before release. That sailfish double already made it a great day, but there was more to come.

We regrouped and got baits back out in search of another bite. At about 11 a.m., we approached a slight rip line near 150 feet of water. There was very little current and next to no surface action for most of the day, so we slowed down to stick in the rip area. Ten minutes in, I noticed one rod bounce hard and then take off. It was a good high-speed run and then line went slack. I screamed to keep reeling no matter what, as this is typical for a wahoo strike. Sure enough, the fish came tight again for another run to the bottom. As I yelled to one angler, the other client’s rod started bouncing. He reeled down, and there was head thrashing on surface. The fish circled the yak twice, and I

gaffed the 29-pound wahoo within minutes. Once we got that one, I knew by its behavior the first fish was going to be a wahoo, as well. I was excited and shaking. I’ve been hunting a double wahoo for a decade or more. Ten minutes later, with that first fish safely in-hand, I let out a scream heard round the world, “We did it! BIG TUNA So you know Lily and I go out and catch yellowfin pretty often, but a few years ago her and I set a goal of catching a giant Bluefin tuna together, just me and her. For the past two Bluefin seasons her and I have only been able to get out there a few times each season, because it is so windy in the winter. We haven’t been able to land one yet. We have hooked them and had them up to the boat but either broke the line or pulled the hook. We were excited to try again this year, so I told her the weather looks awesome for this past Monday, let’s give it a shot. Our first trip out this season and we got one! We put the boat in the water at Oregon inlet at 5 am 1/11/21 and had lines in the water at 6:50. The fish hit at 930 am and we fought him for 3 hours. Lily helped me crank him up , but she mostly drove the boat to keep the line away from the boat /motors. The fish made two long 600 yard runs. After the first run he swam back toward the boat and we thought we lost him, we reeled in almost all the line and then it went tight again and the fish took off a second time with another 600 yards of line. After the second run, when we had the fish about half way to the boat, the handle on the fishing reel snapped off ! We were both like ohh no, now what are we going to do?! Lily said, I wonder if a screw driver will fit in the level hole, so we stuck one in there and it fit. So I grabbed some tape and taped the screw driver in the lever and we cranked him the rest of the way to the boat with a screw driver, which was tough (one of the pics shows it). When the fish finally came up it happened quickly so Lily grabbed the harpoon. Just before she was about to throw the harpoon she froze in fear when the fish came to the surface because it was so huge….but I yelled, you can do it, hit that thing hard! She threw in into the fish on the first shot. We were super excited. I brought some of my logging tools with me, and we cranked the fish up into the boat and over the gunnel, packed him with ice and headed home. This was challenging in our 1998 25 contender considering the fish was 101 inches long, and approx. 500-550lbs, but with some ingenuity we got it done. The fishing reel was a Shimano triton 50wide. We had a lot of fun.

CARP By Mike Buss

his month we will talk about a fish that is usually not targeted by fly fishermen, and that is unfortunate because they are a lot of fun to catch. We’re talking about the common carp that is usually categorized as a trash fish. Many fly fishermen are embarrassed to let other fly fishermen know they fly fish for carp. It seems that carp have a very unsavory reputation that is probably due to the type of water where they can be found. Because they can tolerate just about any type of water conditions they are looked down upon, but that is what can make them so appealing. They can be found just about everywhere. When you combine that with a good fight and they can be very selective in what they will eat, make them a very good flyfishing target. If you like to fish for tailing bonefish, you will love to fly fish for tailing carp, plus you don’t have to travel far to find them. They can be found in the pond just down the road. Carp eat plant and animal matter so they prefer areas where both are present and that is usually shallow, weedy areas with muddy or sandy bottoms where they can feed on plants, insects, and crustaceans. Cover is important and the ability to flee into deep cover is enough security for them. If it is not present, deep water nearby is required. They can tolerate a wide range of water temperatures from 39 to almost 100 degrees F with 66 degrees F being optimal. Carp possess good vision and have good sense of hearing, smell and taste that present some challenges for us. Because they have good vision, we must move slowly and cast carefully. If you are wading, you must be quiet. Products with offensive tastes and smells like bug spray, gasoline and suntan lotion will repel carp. I like to use a 6 or 7 weight balanced fly rod and reel if I expect to catch carp in the 5 to 10 pound range. If I expect larger fish, I go with a heavier outfit. Your reel should be capable of holding at least 100 yards of backing. A large carp will test the limits of your tackle. The fly line will be a floating weight forward one in a subdued color. I use a 9’ tapered leader of 16 pound test. Because carp feed on different kinds of food, carrying a good selection of patterns is important. Match the hatch so to speak. Sunglasses are a must. You need to be able to see carp to be able to sight fish for them. Another important item is a small notebook. You learn something on every trip and if you don’t write it down, it gets forgotten. Locating and spotting them in the water is not enough. We must also determine if they are feeding or just swimming around. They can be tailing, rooting, or sipping along the surface or cruising. Each of these situations require specific techniques to be successful. Next month we will explore these various techniques required to catch this great fighting fish. Until then, tight lines.

Is There Going to be a #9?

This time of year, when the weather gets a little sloppy my mind starts drifting towards consideration of a larger boat….Haven’t I done this before? #8 is just fine for the local rivers but when the winds kick up out of the North you know you are going to take a pounding and get wet in a jon-boat. A better designed hull featuring a softer ride, more length and freeboard would sure be nice. On her plus side, #8 is a breeze to trailer and very easy to handle solo. Her 16-foot length and 72-inch beam have surprisingly lots of room given the open skiff layout. The tiller control steering on the 25 HP outboard eliminates the need for a console that robs precious deck space. The little outboard and 55-pound thrust trolling motor get me where I need to go fairly quickly. However, many of her good attributes have ill effects in less-than-ideal weather conditions. The modified V-hull on the older Tracker Grizzly has an extremely shallow draft with 2 degrees of dead rise great for skimming across the surface, but in a chop or swell the pounding taken at planing speeds will compress your spine (old folks beware). A little more load capacity and freeboard would also provide a larger safety factor on the larger rivers and lakes, especially this time of year when the snowbirds are migrating South on the Inter Coastal Waterway in their behemoth size wake-maker-yachts. Just considering a modest increase in length and freeboard throws a monkey wrench into the reduction gears of my dreams. On the surface, a new 17-foot boat made by the same manufacture with the idea of reusing my current trailer, outboard trolling motor, and rigging seemed like a reasonable way to go. However, the modifications they made to the hull layout primarily only increased the elevated deck spaces (casting platforms) at the expense of cockpit size. The interior side compartments added significant stiffening and floatation (good) but further reduced cockpit volume. A slight increase in deadrise raised the lower deck that is riveted to the deck grid stringers thereby reducing freeboard and cockpit space. Compared to #8, the new 17foot boat had no real improvements for my kind of fishing – no deal. Next, I considered an 18-footer. Given the larger size, larger propulsion is required. This makes tiller steering impractical, so a steering console (center or side) is desired for the larger outboard. Once you plop a console in the middle of your cockpit, you lose a bunch of deck space for coolers, tackle boxes, etc. Recovering the cockpit space, now available in #8, requires an even larger hull and smart use of built-in-storage. Again, propulsion sizes must increase to handle the larger hull. A larger trailer is a must, as well as a bottom line ($$) that starts going off the charts. I might be willing to trade in #8, but at this rate I’d have to trade in one of the airplanes as well. That’s not happening. #8 is starting to look just fine again. Fishing Up-Date: The Fall weather had been non-typically warm and wet. Aside from one 30 pounder, the Fall brought a lot of dinks and eater size fish. “Catfish (Chicken) Eddy” and I have prepped our boats and gear for a cold winter pattern tomorrow. I don’t expect a lot of fish but if a big fish is to be caught, winter is the time to welcome a pig aboard. I’ve spent way too much time in the hangar working on the airplanes while dreaming of going fishing. It is time to get on the water, cold or otherwise. Tough weather, cold water, rough seas better stay inside and calibrate the couch right? No sir we have some options! We may only get a few decent days to get offshore but there will be a plethora of huge Bluefin tuna offshore. These fish will be eclipsing the 100 inch mark and will test every knot, crimp, and drag setting. Ballyhoo way back seem to get the bite. The pros out there are not making sharp turns to keep from running over their lines. So watch and learn and give those guys some space. If you’re not a do it yourself there are awesome well maintained boats with top notch captains ready to get you out there. It tends to be the offseason so a last minute call can often get you on a great boat. Mako shark and yellowfin will also be munching out there as well. West on the gulf stream the shallower inshore waters are a bit slower this time of year. We have not seen the big ocean stripers for 8-9 years. If folks want some action normally dog sharks will bend the pole and always seem to excite new fisher folks. I remind myself some clients have never seen the ocean before and a 3 foot shark is just right . People always seem enamored by sharks and flounder even if they release them. Want to try something out of the box lets go togging. Tog will be crunching crabs on select wrecks. It’s always nice to seeing the whales out there feeding this time of year. Pushing west again just keep going right past the inlet because that tends to be crickets in February. Find dark tannin creeks and start casting little jigs and rattletraps. The black water grabs the heat from the sun and will draw inshore gamefish. Red drum, speckled, trout, striped bass, and flounder will be hanging around. One can also fish cut bait and this fish will find you as well. You might run into a catfish in the process as well. Coming around different creek bends you sounder may light up yet no nibbles. There are a myriad of other fish pinging you. Crappie, largemouth, longnose gar. I find it interesting that almost every fish gives off a different signature. The airbladders are different in each species of fish. Air is a different density than that of water one of the best ways to get good returns from you sonar. Gar tend to be large heavy dense marks. Speckled trout mark in a thin vertical line. Thin arches show squeaky toy dog sharks. These new machines can show us so much and I am confident I use a fraction of its capabilities. In-season at your dock or in storage during the winter months, your boat should be absolutely be covered to protect it from the elements. The cover protects the boat’s finish, interior and instruments from weather degradation, and helps keep critters out as well. In summer, the cover also helps keep water out, so you don’t find it on the lake bottom after every rainstorm. BUY ONLINE OR LOCAL? It’s standard practice to search online first. But where can you get a better boat cover, locally or online? Owners of popular late model brand-name boats are in luck as many online retailers sell custom fitted covers for these hulls at typical online savings. Type “boat covers” into your search engine and see dozens of sites to choose. Type in your year/make/model, and chances are good there’s a cover for your rig for less than half of what it would cost to get a high-quality cover made at a local custom canvas shop. Popular offshore and bass fishing boats, as well as tournament ski hulls, are usually “covered”. These custom covers, by and large, fit pretty well because they’re designed for that particular hull. The more popular the boat, the more likely the cover will fit properly. For those with lesser-known brands and older models, buying a cover from an online/catalog vendor gets very chancy. Most vendors have “semi-custom” covers available, listed under generic headings like “ski boat”, “bass boat” and “runabout”. This means they “sort of ” fit. Here’s where a local custom shop will be a much better choice; you’ll pay more, but get a much better cover.

Some online and catalog vendors offer features like these, but typically at extra cost. By the time these features are added plus shipping, the custom cover looks pretty appealing. SERVICE AFTER THE SALE While online retailers generally accept returns, most online resources make custom covers non-returnable; if you got the model, length or color wrong when ordering, it’s usually your tough luck. When in doubt, pick up the phone and discuss your cover with a sales rep. Locally, you’ll find your options much more varied, and you’ll be able to help design your cover with features you want. WHAT’S IT MADE OF? Check material qualities before you buy. Most online resellers have material quality charts to show you which covers repel water best, last longer, are good for travel, and resist UV-ray deterioration. They’ll even designate each “best use”, such as inside storage (like a dust cover) or outside, trailering, mooring, etc. Buy the cover that best suits your intended use. If your boat stays outside year-round, then spend the bucks to buy a higher-grade cover; it’ll last longer and protect your investment better. If you have a “garage queen” that sees the light of day only when you use it then goes back into hibernation, a lesser-quality cover to keep the dust off will do just fine. Generally, well-known fabrics like Sunbrella will last longest, wear less, and protect the boat better. COST Buying online will save you substantially; for example, most covers for boats in the popular 20-23’ range will typically run less than a grand, while a cover made for boat in this size range will cost well over $2000 at a local shop. Remember, “you get what you pay for”. While it will typically cost much more, a custom cover made locally will almost always fit tighter, look better,

WE’RE ROCKIN’ DEEP DROPPIN’! by Jim Baugh reporting from Oyster Farm at Kings Creek, Cape Charles VA JBOTV Looks forward to this time of year every year! February for the past 20+ years or so for us means one thing, deep droppin offshore for awesome sea bass. We started filming these shows with the late great Captain Jim Brincefield along with Steve Wray and a bunch of other legendary Virginia Beach anglers. This is not just a fishing trip, it is an adventure that never disappoints. These trips are pretty unique and start at arriving on the boat by 2 a.m. in the morning. Yup, 2 a.m.! It takes a few hours to get to the deep drop holes, however, just after sunrise we are ready to fish. That sunrise over the Atlantic is quite something to see. The fishing is usually pretty fast and furious and the mates pretty much take care of everything. Some anglers will bring their own bait as well as electric reels. I usually just use the standard level wind and try not to get in each other’s way. The nonstop fishing will come to an end not long after midday, then the ride back is always a fun party full of stories of the days fishing. People also bring all sorts of great food to share onboard. One year a guy brought smoked ribs, now that was a real treat! You will want to dress warm for this outing and don’t forget to bring gloves. Also pack your lunch and bring your water bottle plus a cooler to take your fish home. inally, the year 2020 is over and we are in the second month of the New Year. 2020 was an interesting year to say the least on the fishing front. At one point in late April and early May we didn’t really know what to expect in the Outer Banks from a recreational angler standpoint. We were pleasantly surprised by the amount of visitors that not only came to the OBX but the amount that booked charter trips, visited piers or tried their hands at surf fishing. For many families, it was their first time enjoying the sport of fishing and hopefully these families will return during the coming years and continue to enjoy the sport of recreational fishing. The current COVID situation still continues to affect the supply chain for fishing tackle. During the 2020 season, many tackle shops were only receiving partial orders from suppliers causing them to be out of certain tackle for most of the year. Hopefully these supply chain disruptions will work their way out, and tackle shops will have complete inventories this fishing season. If you are lucky to find your brand and test weight of fishing line, now is a great time to respool your reels for the upcoming season. The winter is the best time of the year to have your reels serviced and any rod repairs made. Good preparation now will ensure that your fishing time will not be interrupted by equipment failure during the prime of the season. 2020 has also been a tough year for the Fishing Clubs in the OBX area. Many clubs have had little to no meetings during the year and have had their fundraisers and tournaments cancelled. Some clubs have continued their work. The Outer Banks Anglers Club continued to add materials and boats to their new Artificial Reef 165. When all is said and done, the new reef will contain three sunken boats and tons of concrete balls and other concrete structures. This reef and the others the NCDMF maintain were also blessed with loads of Bonner Bridge materials as it was torn down. These reefs should help with fishing out of Oregon Inlet for years to come. Many thanks to Retired Judge Richard Parker, Brian Forbes and Hal Goodman of the Outer Banks Anglers Club for their time and dedication to seeing AR165 come to fruition. These men spent countless hours filling out applications, permits and securing items for the reef. If you would like to see more projects like this done in the OBX then consider joining the OBX Anglers Club this year. Dues are only $25 a year and it is a great way to meet fellow anglers and help promote fishing on the OBX. I will let you know when they will resume meeting this year. Since we are in the new year, don’t forget to renew your membership in all the fishing clubs in which you are a member. It has been a hard year for all of them, and we need to make sure they survive in order to continue to promote recreational fishing. ulf of Mexico anglers have a couple new reasons to be excited as we head into the spring and summer fishing seasons. NOAA is looking at loosening regulations for both Gulf red snapper and gray triggerfish. That should help fill some coolers for bottom-fishers who’ve found it’s sometimes tough these days to catch anything other than snapper and triggerfish. New catch level recommendations for red snapper are expected in time for

the Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council’s April 2021 meeting, which should provide time for adjustments prior to the traditional summer peak in recreational snapper fishing. This good news is the result of a massive study called “The Great Red Snapper Count,” a $10-million, congressionally funded, independent stock assessment initiated in 2016 and conducted by 21 scientists and 12 institutions across the Gulf. The Great Red Snapper Count showed red snapper are far more abundant than previously estimated using the Southeast Data, Assessment, and Review stock assessment process that has been used to all but shut down snapper seasons over the last decade. The Great Red Snapper Count estimates that for 2-year-old-plus red snapper there are 23 million off Texas, 29 million off Louisiana, 10 million off Mississippi and Alabama, and 48 million off Florida. It also showed that large fish are comparatively more abundant in the western Gulf than the eastern Gulf. NOAA’s plan is to integrate the Great Red Snapper Count’s findings into its interim analysis for Gulf red snapper. It is worth noting that even though anglers and researchers are seeing more and larger red snapper, the spawning potential of the population is still below the original target of NOAA’s rebuilding plan. Adjustments to the state-specific catch limits are being considered to account for the harvest monitoring programs used by each state. Loosened restrictions on gray triggerfish are being considered following an interim analysis, using video surveys to estimate abundance, that showed the stock size has been increasing, especially in the eastern Gulf, and that catch limits can be increased. The Gulf Council’s Scientific and Statistical Committee recommended increasing the gray triggerfish acceptable biological catch limit to 456,900 pounds whole weight, which allows an increase in the gray triggerfish annual catch limit. Action is expected prior to the end of the 2021 recreational fishing season. The Council is also considering modifications to the gray triggerfish recreational fixed closed seasons and will consider that action in a separate framework action that will also address changes to the vermilion snapper recreational bag limit.

here’s no mistaking it when a monster striped bass blows up on the surface. At a slow troll just after first light, you can almost feel it’s going to happen. Behind a planer board, the stinger-hooked gizzard shad begins to struggle. Anticipation goes through the roof as the bait flees for its life. “When you see that big shad get exploded on, it’s like a bowling ball dropped out of the sky,” said Shane Goebel, of Big Ol’ Fish Guiding Service. “The planer board streaks across the water, and it’s on! There’s really nothing else like it.” Goebel has watched this scene take place hundreds of times while guiding the mountain lakes that straddle the Georgia/North Carolina border. He knows what it takes to boat striped bass in the 30- to 40-plus-pound range. Here are Goebel’s tips for dialing in the big-fish bite: 1) Fish Trophy Striper Season: Giants are caught year-round, but fate favors the uncomfortable angler. When the water is cold, baitfish and big stripers are forced into the shallows in search of warmer water. They push out of the main lake and into the backs of creeks and rivers, where big fish are more predictable than when they’ve got the whole lake to roam. 2) Offer Them Everything: By putting out a large spread of different baits, you’re more likely to troll a preferred meal past that big girl’s nose. Goebel fishes as many baits as the confines of a 14 NATIONAL

creek allow. He might run a couple planer boards out each side of the boat, a couple freelines off the stern and a couple of balloon baits way in back. He staggers distance and depth to cover water both horizontally and vertically. Goebel fishes a mix of baits, too. Big gizzard shad and rainbow trout are big striper baits, but when blueback herring are the predominant forage, he’ll fish all three at the same time. You never know which bait will get hit. 3) Stay With the Baitfish: You’re probably sick of hearing this, but… “find the bait, and you’ll find the fish.”

Goebel starts cold mornings in the backs of the creeks looking for baitfish. When he sees what he likes, he deploys his spread and works from the shallows out to the creek mouth as the day advances to follow the movement of baitfish and stripers. On some lakes, diving birds are a dead giveaway. Keep binoculars on the console to scout for gulls. Also, especially on warmer days, don’t be afraid to drop downlines if you mark bait deep in a creek mouth. 4) Keep a Pitch Rod Ready: Goebel keeps lightweight spinning rods rigged and ready with Flukes and Redfins. Those casting rods come in handy when feeding breaks loose on the surface. It’s quicker and easier to cast lures to visible fish than it is to steer a trolling spread over them. ven in the depths of winter, there is trout action to be found on delayed harvest (DH) streams where state agencies stock trout heavily under catch-and-release regulations. DH stretches offer high densities of trout that grow progressively wilder through winter into spring. And while stocked trout are renowned for their gullibility, they can also be difficult at times. Bill Stranahan, a veteran guide with Southeastern Anglers has a few tricks up his sleeve for catching DH trout. Bugger Time: “Wooly Buggers are so important this time of year,” Stranahan said. “You’re looking for that reaction strike. Swing and strip. Keep it moving.” Olive and black are perennial favorite colors whenever and wherever, and for winter fishing he prefers smaller Buggers in sizes 6 to 10. The primary DH stretches he fishes are Tennessee’s Hiwassee tailrace and the Tellico River, which is a freestone. They are very different fisheries, yet swinging and stripping Buggers is pretty much universally productive. Get Down On It: If catching numbers of fish is the goal, nymphing is normally the best tactic. When the trout are less active—especially when they’re holed up in deeper, slower runs during a cold snap—it might be the only way to catch fish. The key to catching fish in these conditions is depth. Trout won’t move far to feed when they’re hunkered down, so getting your nymphs down to them is imperative. Stranahan likes a weighted Pat’s Rubber Legs, or a similar heavy stonefly nymph in sizes 6 to 10. It’s a big buggy-looking mouthful, and it’s also a great anchor fly to fish in tandem with other nymphs. Depending on what the fish want, the Pat’s could be fished below “junk food” like a Squirmy Worm, a mop or egg pattern, or flashy attractor nymphs like a Rainbow Warrior or Lightning Bug. Or, if trout want something more natural, the Pat’s could anchor a small black stonefly nymph, a Hare’s Ear or a Prince. Again, depth is the key, so Stranahan likes a good sliding indicator that’s easy to adjust. Judge the depth of each hole, and try to get your anchor fly to drift just off the bottom. Headhunting: “Depending on how froggy you feel as an angler on a given day, you can go out running and gunning with big streamers,” Stranahan said. On a large tailwater or in deep holes on a smaller stream, big streamers have a way of turning the biggest fish. A big Zonker, a Swimmin’ Jimmy, a Zoo Cougar or one of Kelly Galloup’s other articulated patterns make a commotion when fished on sinking line. You’re trying to get their attention. If you don’t get chased in one hole, switch something up and move until you find what’s working. Sticking to the plan is important, though. Underneath the crossmembers of a 24-foot Playbouy pontoon, a Hero EX-1 drum anchor winch was paired with the Hinged Solution, while the Retractable Solution was retrofitted to the 24-foot SouthBay tritoon sporting the Hero EX-2. Read on to discover the similarities and differences between these two innovative solutions that anyone can install! Aesthetics: The difference between the two is a matter of visibility; the Hinged protrudes ever-so-slightly underneath the deck in order to lift and drop the river anchor out of the water, whereas the Retractable remains completely invisible until it slides out from underneath the boat to release anchor, rode and chain in one sweeping motion. While some prefer to see the river or mushroom anchor lifted and held by the Hinged, a waterproof, wifi camera is also available so the operator can watch their Hero EX-1, EX-2 or Patriot EZ-1 deploy the rode from their smartphone. Mechanics: Each system’s operational differences lie within hollow-tube raceways. While the Hinged system has a folding bow roller that lifts when the anchor makes contact, the Retractable system has an internal spring that compresses with deployment and retrieval. Installation: For the Hinged solution, place the bow roller head so it protrudes slightly from under the deck. Keep trailering in mind, and plot where the best-suited location is in tangent when trafficking your boat to and from the water. The sleeve of the hollow raceway, which is immediately connected to the hinged bow roller’s head, is placed directly on the edge of the bullnose/front of the decking bracket that secures the square hollow raceway

to the vessel’s crossmembers. For the Retractable, install the raceway 10 to 12 inches from the front of the boat. Both solutions have four drilled holes at the opposite end of the solution (the drum winch end) to allow for further flexibility when mounting to the crossmembers of the boat. Hardware: Both solution kits come with a universal underside mounting plate with pre-drilled holes for the winch selected. Elongated slots are designed to fit any crossmember, no matter how close or far apart they may be. Additional mounting hardware includes required mounting brackets, hex bolts, lock nuts and flat washers. Both solution raceways have several predrilled holes to correctly locate the included mounting tabs and brackets to the crossmembers, and both can be powered by the Hero EX-1, EX-2 or Patriot EZ-1.
