ISTIOPHORUS: THE MYSTERIOUS SAILFISH

he sailfish is one of the most commonly caught billfish. Due to its proclivity for shallower coastal waters and frequency of ascension to the surface, the odds of catching one of these beauties can be much greater than for other billfish. There is little scientific certainty about the mysterious behavior of sailfish. They exhibit a general migratory pattern throughout the year, but they often break their own rules and show up unexpectedly. Summer sailfish catches are generally more associated with the Gulf of Mexico, yet they do appear on the Atlantic coast this time of year, as well. Sailfishing in the Florida Keys is usually a late autumn and early spring

bite. It can be an absolute catching frenzy. However, in July, following the passage of tropical storm Elsa, sailfish were seen tailing at the surface, cruising the waves along a strong current line off of Marathon Key. It was a bizarre and welcomed phenomenon. The conditions that followed the storm created a concise current line, with greener nearshore waters touching the blue water, and a milky powder-blue highway running down the center. Sailfish were spotted swimming east to west at the top of the waves, and seemed to dive deeper to circle back. The locals are no strangers to this phenomenon that occurs in the Keys. Though the time of year may be unpredictable, anglers are always ready to make the most of it. This type of fishing requires polarized sunglasses and a tower boat. Slowly creeping through the powder blue highway, scan the waves for black torpedo shapes or blobs that resemble black garbage bags. Hunt for the opportunity to sight cast live baits. Without the visual vantage of a tower, trolling lures or bump trolling live bait may be more productive than trying to spot them from deck level. Sailfish truly are an incredible and unpredictable species. Very few have been successfully tagged, and few have held a tag long enough to transmit much information. Of those tagged for up to a year, their patterns were generally erratic. They seem to be extremely transient, foraging and spawning in many different coastal regions, predictably unpredictable, like majestic aquatic gypsies. Commonalities in their behavior are that they primarily stay within a water temperature of approximately 80 degrees; they mostly stay near the surface, rarely diving below 300 feet; and they exhibit extremely curious evening routines. All of the transmissions showed sailfish spending the evening within 30 feet of the surface, descending briefly before sunrise and sunset. They were also observed to be active nightly, seemingly unaffected by lunar phases. or Matt Metelsky, daddy-daughter time with his 17-year-old is a little more involved than a trip to the ice cream parlor. Matt’s daughter Lily is a rising high school senior. She loves nothing more than waking up at 2 a.m. to run 85 miles off Virginia Beach and troll the edge of the Continental Shelf with her dad. In late June, the duo fished the Virginia Beach Tuna Tournament, where Lily placed second in the Lady Angler division with a yellowfin that weighed 39.9 pounds. But that’s not her biggest tuna to-date. Her heaviest yellowfin weighed 44 pounds. She caught it last summer, and at 5-foot-4 and 115 pounds, it took her about 15 minutes to haul it in stand-up with a belt. “I don’t know. We do wood work on the side, so we load wood, and I guess that gives you some back strength,” Lily offered as explanation for feats of fishing strength. “We always stay active. With Dad, it’s work hard, play harder.” Lily’s strength and stamina are a given considering she qualified and is working as an oceanfront lifeguard at Virginia Beach this summer. Matt, however, has another explanation for his daughter’s skill, as well as her love for this hard-core style of fishing. Lily was 5 years old when Matt purchased his Contender 25 with twin 150s. At a tender age, Lily cut her teeth going toe-to-toe with hard-pulling spadefish in 50 feet of water, 20 miles offshore. “I’m thinking the technique she picked up with those spades when she was little just kind of morphed over into the tuna,” Matt said. “It really amazes

me she is able to battle those things stand-up.” Lily began joining Matt for long days offshore when she turned 13. She was 15 the summer of 2019 when she was first physically able to handle a yellowfin—a 26-pounder—by herself. But pumping and reeling aren’t Lily’s only deck duties. She helps rig and bait and steers the boat while her dad deploys an eight-rod spread on the Gulf Stream. Last Jan. 11, she manned the helm while Matt battled a 550-pound bluefin. When the handle on the 50w reel broke under the stress, it was Lily’s idea to improvise with a screwdriver and electrical tape to eventually land that fish. The peak yellowfin season is June and July out of Rudee Inlet. Matt and Lily make five or six trips a summer, often with friends. Normal days consist of two or three tuna, some bonita and mahi, and occasionally a white marlin. Two or three times a year, January and February bluefin trips are just for the two of them. There aren’t many people interested in waiting on one big bite in brutal mid-winter conditions, anyway. “She’s just tough as nails,” Matt said of his daughter. “I don’t know how else to describe it. She’s just tough.” Lily doesn’t seem to perceive any hardship. She considers herself lucky to be able to spend time with her dad on the water. “When we’re out there on the boat, it’s just so peaceful,” she said. “I pretty much sleep the whole time. We give nominated Veterans with service-connected disabilities the opportunity to spend a day in the beauty of God’s creation and relax while fishing. As we can all agree, the outdoors is a great place to bring peace of mind, calming, reflection, and a chance to put aside the typical day-to-day stresses. In July, we had the pleasure of taking two Veterans out of Nags Head in the Outer Banks on the “Jesus Freak” Captained by David. It was a stressful time leading up to the trip due to tropical storm Elsa. She skirted up the Carolina coast casting doubt that the trip would happen at all. Then Thursday we started to see a window with calming seas and Captain David made the call that we would say a prayer and go! We were joined by Vietnam Marine Veteran Jack and Gulf War Army Veteran Marco. It was a full boat with Marco’s wife, friends Keith and Steve, and Norm from our partners at Synapse joining! We pulled away from the dock at 5:00 a.m. and started fishing at 7:30 a.m. off Nags Head. As you can see, by 9:15 we had a 57-pound yellowfin tuna in the ice chest! What a catch! We had a fantastic day! As the seas calmed, we talked and laughed while catching 13 large tile fish, including a 12-pounder landed by Jack for a state citation certificate. We were truly blessed with a great day on the water and fantastic fellowship as we returned to the dock. Our trip concluded with dinner at Mahi Mahi’s reflecting on the day. After each trip, our Veteran walks away with a fishing rod, fishing tackle, Hook Line and Heroes apparel, a Bible and daily devotional book. THE FLYING FISHERMAN By J. Andre

Catfishing Report Today, the fishing gods must have been smiling. The catfish action was fast and furious from dawn until 0830. The ticket was freshly frozen blue crab quarters. This time of the year, long nose gar are also on the prowl and they will pester your chunked fish baits. The blue cats will eat crabs and the gar tend to leave this bait alone. I went to Oceans East the day before to purchase a half dozen and placed them in the freezer over-night. The big chill not only keeps them fresh, but it also solidifies them, so they are easier to cut into quarters, place on the hook, and cast without falling off the hook. We studied the weather forecast a few days out and it screamed, CATFISHING DAY! A weak cold front was moving through, and the skies were broken keeping the air cool. The earlier winds had been pushing water in from the Sound giving us water a foot and a half above normal. Once underway to the fishing hole in the pre-dawn, the southern horizon was a brilliant light show of cloud to cloud lightning flashes illuminating the clouds. I was drooling to get the lines in the water. The morning bite was wild. I brought four of my light action catfishing rods, but I was hardly able to rig three and get them in the rod holders before I had another takedown. Some of those were doubles. The fish were small school sized fish from 6 to 12 pounds, but they were fun to catch. The bite subsided well after sunrise. As the lull was waited out, a couple of white perch were added to the bait inventory. I made a run to the Munden Point City Park to pick up my wife and grandson so they could join the fun. There was another surge in the action around 0930. At this point, we were using perch baits and the gar were terrorizing the four-rod spreads. On one occasion, a gar swimming left to right managed to hit and strip all four baits in less than one minute. That got my heart rate up there, but it wasn’t very productive. It was during this second period of activity that my 3 year old grandson caught four fish in 15 minutes. The tally for the morning was four eaters around 8 pounds each for the cooler and we released 13 fish. This was a welcome outing. Excluding this trip, I don’t think I had caught 10 fish since last October. Something happened on the river. The water was muddy and bait was hard to find through the Winter and Spring. If we had bait, the catfish were elusive and small. On top off that, getting sick, missing deer season, and surgery had me at an all-time low. Today, WE WERE SLIMED! Other notes: This was a late June trip. Air temperature was 70, the surface water temperature was 81. The winds were SW-NW at 7 KTS and the water clarity was clear. The warm water is certainly warm enough to kicked off the spawn somewhere locally, but we didn’t see any scarred fish and the females were still plump with eggs. If this trip is any indicator, the post spawn action should be just as good with larger fish being caught. That said, they will be lean coming out of the spawn and not up to their peak weight. Keep some eater size fish for a fresh fish fry, but practice CPR ( Catch, get Pictures, and Release) on the rest. Get Slimed! COASTALANGLERMAG.COM • THEANGLERMAG.COM

Well, let’s dodge a few hurricanes and catch some fish! The red drum fishing for the puppy drum 17-28 inch fish has been fantastic this summer and should continue on thru August and only get better into the fall. The backwater guides have been doing fantastic with them. Casting gold spoons and fishing cut bait. Inshore we have seen pretty good ribbonfish, Spanish mackerel, and false albacore. Trolling spoons and casting stingsilvers seem to work well. Good sign of sharks around as well. he wrecks have been holding a few triggerfish and amberjack. The ajs are true tackle testers and will hurt your back. Pound for pound about as tough pulling as a gamefish can get. Tip water plugs, vertical jigs, and long leaders with live bait get em to bite! Offshore, the guys have been wrestling tuna away from the sharks. The bill fishing will start heating up and blue and white marlin there for the well prepared and knowledgeable crews! Should I stay or should I go? By Capt. Jim Davison, Miss Disturbed Sportfising Everyone, as I start this article please know that SAFETY is my primary concern at all times, no exceptions. Now that I have disclosed that, let’s talk “Should I stay or Should I go?” Of course we are talking about the weather and offshore trips. With today’s technology and access to thousands of apps, there are many weather apps to help us decide if we should go fishing. A lot of the time the applications don’t agree with each other. I still don’t understand why. So this is what do I do, and this is not 100%. I have missed some good days and have showed up to the ramp and have 20mph winds blowing and went home. Unfortunately, I am a 90% weekend warrior and 10% weekday angler. I start watching the long range forecast on Tuesday before the weekend. This is just to get an idea of tropical fronts and what’s floating around in the Atlantic that will weigh in towards the weekend. I check this daily and really start paying attention on Thursday. This is when I start looking at weather. gov because I can watch the fronts moving across the states and they are now starting to play around with a new marine section. This is my primary website and it weighs in about 75% on my decision. I also start watching windy app and fish weather app. I like watching these two as they have predictions for sea heights. These two apps weigh in the other 25% of my decision. So what am I looking for? I’m looking for winds to be less than 15mph and sea state to be less than 3’ and greater than 7 seconds dominate wave period. If I’m seeing a forecast of 10-15mph winds and dominate wave period of 8 seconds, I’m fueling up the boat and setting the alarm on the clock. If I’m seeing 10-15mph and a sea state of 3’ at 6 seconds, I’m sleeping in. You can see now why I miss a good day of fishing now and then. The winds are within my boats abilities but the sea state is pretty bumpy. With this set up we play too much on “what if ” and you can really get in trouble. Is it better to play it safe and miss a good day or do you take a chance and

get caught up in the 15-20mph winds and sea state increasing to 4-5‘ at 6 seconds? I also look at what is going to happen during the day. Keep in mind that you have to get back in, so if the winds are forecasted to increase during the day that means the sea state is going to increase as well. If the afternoon forecast is over my limits I don’t care how beautiful the morning is I call it off. Also, if you’re running out of one of those crazy inlets with shoaling, you need to keep that in mind. I have seen 4’ roller and fished a beautiful day just to find things stacked up at the inlet and got the crazy beat out of me running that last mile trying to get back to the ramp. I’ve heard a lot of “My boat can handle it.” Well, ya, I hope so but what about your knees when you’re making a move to a bent over rod and take a hard roll and blow out your knee; or rigging a ballyhoo and take a hard roll and run the hook into the palm of your hand? Let’s say everything goes good on the hook up and you get the fish to the boat and in the boat, now you take a hard roll and slip on the blood that’s on the deck and knock yourself out? This is what goes through my head. I also like to get on Facebook and The Hull Truth to see if anyone else fishing out of my home port is planning on going. I like to have another boat out there with me; a buddy boat. I will never fish offshore by myself, 60 miles is a long way away if something goes wrong. Now of course I’m talking about my 28’ Grady White, not a 60’ sport fisher. That’s different. Also keep in mind there is nothing wrong with showing up at the ramp and deciding to go out to breakfast instead of taking a chance. What it comes down to for me is what is the safest conditions that I, and the folks that are with me, can handle -not my boat. The boat will take way more than I can. Make good decisions when it comes to running offshore, be safe and get some blood on the deck.

opefully you’ll never experience them, but when you do, paying attention to your outboard engine alarms can pay off big...especially if you consider that ignoring them can leave you stranded offshore. This article is a basic primer on the different types of outboard engine warning alarms, what they mean, and some potential remedies that may help get you back to port again until the problem can be rectified. By all means, study your engine owner’s manual as different engines have different alarms.

This fuel is contaminated with water

OVERHEAT ALARM Most if not all engines have a basic overheat alarm. The most common alarm, this is a simple sensor that’s located somewhere on the cylinder head(s), that short-circuits to ground when the engine overheats. What does overheating mean? It means that the cylinder head temperature has reached a point that the engine manufacturer considers too hot; typically, that’s somewhere around 180 degrees Fahrenheit. To give some scale, typical normal operating temperatures range between 100* and 150* F. Typical causes of overheating include blocked water intakes, clogged water passages in the gearcase, midsection and/or powerhead, thermostats stuck closed, or water pump failure. What to do? If the engine overheat alarm sounds, pull back on the throttle immediately, but don’t shut the engine off yet. Check the overboard water indicator (“pee stream”) on the lower engine cowl to ensure it’s still flowing. Remove the engine cowl and, using caution, gently place the palm of your hand on the cylinder head(s). In general, if you can rest your hand on the top of the cylinder head for five seconds or more, the engine is not overheating. If you have to pull your hand away immediately, it’s overheating. If the engine is indeed overheating, you must either find the problem and correct it, or limp home at a slow idle speed—or, if the problem continues even at idle speed, get a tow. It makes no sense to damage the engine by continuing on despite the overheat condition. The result of operating the engine while it continues to overheat will be a complete engine failure—an expensive lesson! How to find the problem? First, tilt the outboard up so you can check the lower unit water intakes. You may have sucked some mud or sand into them, or even debris such as weeds, grass or a plastic bag. If the intakes are blocked, remove the debris and tilt the engine back into the water; start it and let it idle for a few minutes. If the alarm stays silent, try advancing the throttle to get the boat back on plane. If the alarm returns, reduce throttle and get a tow home. You will likely need a technician to correct the problem. Most modern engines (those made after 2000 or so) also have a “safe mode”; that is, if overheated, the engine management module (EMM) will automatically reduce engine RPM to 2500 or so, and the engine will not rev past that point until (1) the problem is corrected, and (2) the ignition switch is turned off and back on again.

LOW/NO OIL ALARM Most if not all oil-injected two-stroke engines have an oil warning alarm. This buzzer sounds when the engine is not receiving lubricating oil from the oil injection system, and/or when the oil level in the oil tank gets too low. Operating the outboard while ignoring this alarm means it will eventually fail. Lack of lubricating oil means a very expensive engine overhaul, so this alarm bears your attention. If you do hear it, stop immediately and check the oil level in the tank first. If the tank oil level is satisfactory, the system itself may have failed, or it may be issuing a false alarm. Either way, it may save your engine to simply add oil to Oil tank shown here is full of debris and dirt. the fuel tank to get yourself home, until a technician can diagnose the problem and ensure that the system pumps oil to the engine. FUEL RESTRICTION/WATER IN FUEL This alarm will sound if the engine cannot suck fuel from the boat tank. Typically, this can mean an obstruction in the fuel line (debris, a kink in the hose, or an air leak at a connection—such as the primer bulb or fuel filter). If you hear this alarm, typically it will sound at higher throttle settings, but will go away as you reduce the throttle (makes sense—the engine needs more fuel at higher throttle settings). If you hear this alarm, reduce the throttle setting to idle, and attempt to find the problem. Often the air leak or line kink will be quickly evident. If not, and the condition persists, continue back to port at a low throttle setting (or get a tow), and have a qualified technician find and correct the problem. Many outboards have a water alarm sensor, to warn the operator of water contamination in the fuel. This sensor is typically located on the engine’s fuel/water separating filter. This is important, as the engine will run poorly and possibly fail when running on fuel with a heavy water content. If this alarm sounds, installing a new fuel/water separating filter will usually cure it, unless the boat fuel system is supersaturated with water (it happens more often than you think!). If the problem continues even after replacing the fuel/water separating filter, contact a professional fuel cleaner (in Hampton Roads, the best there is: USA Fuel Service, www.usafuelservice.com). Next, chop fresh parsley, tomatoes and avocados into a bowl cover and set in the fridge. After the 4-hour rest in the fridge, take out everything and mix in a large bowl. can hardly believe it is August already! Tourism here on the Outer Banks has been record setting and we in the fishing fleet have also been having a great year of business and catches. Because August is here, it is tournament time for Billfish. The Pirates Cove Tournament week starts August 7th thru the 14th and the tournament looks to be better than the COVID restricted ones from last year where the post fishing events were cancelled or highly restricted. The week of fishing starts off on Saturday, August 7th, with registration at 6:00 p.m. followed by a Cookout for a Cure with food provided by Sam and Omie’s. There will also be boat decoration and team costume contests. The Captains’ meeting will be at 8:00 p.m. On Sunday, August 8th, the 32nd Alice Kelly Women’s Billfish Tourney will be held followed by the awards banquet and a night of musical entertainment where you can dance the night away. Monday morning on August 9th, registration continues and a Mate’s Luncheon. Registration continues until 9:00 p.m. that evening with the Captain’s Meeting at 8:00 p.m. Dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m. Fishing will begin for the 38th Annual Pirates Cove Billfish Tournament on Tuesday and will continue until Friday, August 13th with a food and entertainment event after each evening except on Friday when the awards banquet will be held. On Saturday, August 14th, the 4th Annual Sheep Dogs Veterans Challenge with lines in at 8:30 a.m. and out at 3:00 p.m. Dinner, entertainment and awards ceremony will follow after the day of fishing is over. his month I would like to introduce myself to the fly-fishing fans out there. Particularly if you have followed Mike Buss’ column for years or think that you may have a fly rod you got some time ago (decades) but have not seen lately; this column is for you. Fly fishing is guilt free. It is you and the fish. You hook a fish (or a tree or a rock or a dock… you get the idea) and world is good. It does not matter if the fish is a two-inch bluegill, the stars have aligned and you are good with the universe. I personally prefer bigger fish but my habit is to have a fishing rod with me no matter where I am. Generally, this is a good rule to follow, “Whenever possible have a fly in the water.” Please consider that almost all fish will take a fly. Since I took up fly fishing, all my fishing abilities have improved. I tie better knots and I tie them better. I set hooks and fight fish better now than I ever did. This is not to say that I am all that. It is to say that tying on a fly requires a certain amount of concentration and attention to what you are trying to accomplish. What are the fish doing? Where can I put this fly to greet them without spooking them etc. In other words, fly-fishing asks us to think more like a fish. In coastal Virginia and North Carolina there are a wide range of fishing opportunities. Any of those situations that are in 30 feet of water or less I would or have tried to use a fly. Is it always successful? Nope. Is it interesting and helps make me a better fisherperson? Yep. I hope this little thought makes you smile or think or both. CAMP FOR TROUT DEEP IN THE SMOKIES By Nick Carter

hen the boat dropped us off Friday morning, it was with an understanding someone would return for us Sunday afternoon. We debarked into two nights and three days of camping and trout fishing deep in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. With no cell service or road access for miles in any direction, we were about as disconnected as you can get in this part of the world. It was a glorious feeling. Actually, one of our guides, Jake Tallent, of Fish Tales Outfitters in Franklin, N.C., had a satellite phone/EPIRB “for emergencies.” Around the campfire one night, he admitted using it to text his girlfriend. Guess the whole out-of-touch and roughing-it fantasy is a little outdated these days. We weren’t really roughing it much at all. Tallent and our other guide, Nick Potts, rolled cartloads of gear up the trail to our campsite near the mouth of Hazel Creek. Three other clients and I sat in camp chairs and got to know each other while the guides set up camp. That set the mood for the weekend. The camping was comfortable, everything was provided for. All we were expected to do was fish hard, enjoy ourselves and return to hot meals around a campfire each evening. Hazel Creek flows through high mountains on the north shore of

North Carolina’s Lake Fontana. Road access to the north shore was completely cut off in the 1940s, when TVA flooded this impoundment of the Little Tennessee River. Abandoned, the communities that existed there returned to the forest. In three-quarters of a century since, it has become one of the most beautiful and historically intriguing areas of the Smokies. The best access is by boat across the lake. Proctor, N.C. is the ghost town on Hazel Creek. The town’s main drag, Calico Street, is now the gravel trail that parallels the creek for 15 miles up into the hills. Ruins of Proctor are hidden everywhere in the creek and up steep wooded hillsides. Tallent regaled us with history as we passed landmarks hiking upstream in search of good trout water each day. The creek itself is on the large side of typical for the park. It is cold and clear with a relatively flat gradient that makes for easy streamside hiking. A mix of boulder-strewn stretches and bedrock shoals create interesting holding water. There are also some deep, dark pools. Hazel Creek is loaded with beautiful 7- to 12-inch stream-born rainbow trout. There are also some big browns lurking in the deep holes. Over three days of fishing, we caught good numbers of fish with simple dry-dropper rigs on 3- and 4-weight fly rods. There’s nothing more fun than wading up a mountain stream to toy with wild trout that are eager to jump on a dry fly. Hazel Creek is a gorgeous place to do it.
