ahoo are some of the fastest fish in the ocean. Built for speed with large tails and torpedo shaped bodies, they can accelerate rapidly and turn on a dime. Wahoo can be solitary fish or found in large schools, depending on conditions, time of year and moon phases. Known for their excellent table fare and awesome fighting ability, anglers travel to South Florida and The Bahamas from all over the world to target them. They have razor sharp teeth and their jaws are hinged like scissors, so landing one on mono is always an exhilarating feat. They can be caught year round, but during the winter months they are found in far better numbers and sizes, especially around the new and full moons. There are several ways to catch them, including high-speed trolling, planer fishing, vertical jigging and live bait. High-speed trolling for wahoo could well be the most exciting method to catch them. There’s nothing like hearing the clicker of an 80 wide reel scream while you’re doing 17 knots. In some cases, you will have multiple hook ups with multiple drags going off. Talk about heart racing! I’ll go over my normal high-speed spread, but keep in mind everyone has their favorite way of doing things. I run a three-line spread. I fish two electric reels and a 50W Shimano Talica. My first electric is set at 80 feet from the boat with a 48-ounce cable-rigged cigar lead. To that I have 25 feet of 400-pound mono shock leader, which is then connected to my lure. The next electric is set at 150 feet from the boat with a 32-ounce cigar lead and the same shock leader. Last is my shotgun Talica with a 24-ounce cigar lead and the same shock leader. I have about 25 different lures from different manufacturers in many colors, shapes and sizes. All of my lures are rigged on 480-pound cable with either single or double hook sets. I start my spread with an assortment of colors. If I get more than one bite on a particular color, I will change the others to that or similar colors. High speed trolling is done in both South Florida and the Bahamas. I used to think that it

was pointless in South Florida, but over the last few years I have been more successful catching them, and the fish I’ve been catching are better sized fish than the wahoo I’ve caught while planer fishing. On a trip just after a winter full moon, we caught a double header off Pompano Beach. Each fish was in the 40-pound range. When high speed trolling, the optimum speed is between 15 and 20 knots, and we fish a zigzag pattern between 120 and 300 feet of water. There are a couple reasons for the zigzag. One is to mimic baitfish coming in or going out during tidal changes, and the other is that during your turns your baits will slow down and fall slightly before accelerating again. This is when you get most of your bites. Keeping an eye on your chart plotter is key, because you can generally mark the schools in the upper portion of the water column. High speed trolling is great if you want to specifically target wahoo, as there are only a few species that eat at that kind of speed. Planer fishing is just as fun and doesn’t burn nearly as much fuel. I like to run two planers consisting of a #4 and a #8 planer with either a drone spoon or a bonita strip behind a Sea Witch. Colors, sizes and shapes all vary, but once I find what color they like I switch them over. The drone spoon is a time-tested and proven method. The flash and vibration of the spoon cutting through the water gets their attention. I prefer 3.5-inch blue drone spoon behind a #8 Old Salty planer. I run about 60 to 100 feet of 60-pound mono between my planer and bait. While pulling planers down deep, I also pull a couple surface baits. Anything from a bonita strip behind a chugger-style lure to a rigged ballyhoo on wire behind an Islander will work. If you have outriggers, you can spread two baits wide and run a shotgun with a cigar-weighted rigged ballyhoo. I

planer fish the same areas as I high speed, but my speeds will be much slower at 6 to 11 knots. Lots of wahoo tournaments have been won fishing at slower trolling speeds, so don’t rule out a jumbo just because you’re not highspeeding. Live baiting wahoo is less common because you are either bump trolling or drifting goggle eyes or other live baits. You are not covering as much ground. Live baits rigged on light wire or titanium are my first choice, with fluorocarbon being second, due only to a wahoo’s super sharp teeth. I’ve caught several wahoo on vertical jigs. About 90 percent of those have come way offshore under some type of flotsam. I prefer a simple 2-ounce diamond Jig. All the wahoo I’ve caught on vertical jigs have been less than 10 pounds. Wahoo as table fare is in my top five, maybe even top three. I’ve often said that if you have cooked it, it’s already burnt. Do yourself a favor and try some wahoo sashimi! Capt. here are a multitude of pleasures and benefits to fishing. The beauty of the environment, the challenge, the relaxation, the simple joy of being outside, the fish caught and the big ones that got away are all among the reasons we fish. Intertwined are the relationships created during outings. Like many others, there are times when I would rather be on the water alone. One particular period of my life, I was working full time while going to night school working on my master’s degree. I had no time. Recognizing this, my wife all but demanded I go fishing. Entering the creek that morning, I was mentally exhausted. I perhaps fished 30 minutes before I wound up lying on a rock with the sun in my face. The sound of the creek and my feet in the cool water washed away a lot of stress. At other times, I’ve found the solitude allows me to commune amidst the creation with its creator. After all, even Jesus knew the merits of hanging out with fishermen. To quote Norman MacLean in A River Runs Through It, “And we were left to assume, as my younger brother Paul and I did… that all firstclass fishermen on the Sea of Galilee were flyfishermen... and that John, the favorite, was a dry fly-fisherman.” Over the decades, I’ve been blessed to meet hundreds of like-minded sportsmen. Some, I’d rather forget! However, looking back over fourplus decades, I cannot help but reminisce over what fishing friendships have meant. If you were fortunate to begin fishing young, you had at least one mentor. If you had a father or grandfather who took you on early fishing trips, hopefully you realize how blessed you were 6 NATIONAL

and will joyfully pass that blessing to the next generation. Having no fishermen in my family tree, I adapted. Like-minded friends of my own age, aka the “Three Amigos,” myself, Keith and Steve, as well as their fathers and grandfathers, helped me along the way. Though my father didn’t fish, he worked in a textile mill alongside more than a few fishermen with whom I came into contact. Among them were the late Don Kirk, author of several books on fly fishing, and the late, great fly tyer Kirk Jenkins. To this day, the memory is burned in my mind of my father’s co-worker Charlie Murrell tying flies with me while camped on Forney Creek in the Smoky Mountains. I was 14 years old. Along the way, they and others taught me wading, casting and reading water, always instilling an interest and knowledge of the history of and respect for the locations where I trod as a young fisherman. Growing older meant adulthood; college, career and marriage entered the scene. Still, at least one of the Three Amigos besides myself has kept fishing, and we still get together when life permits. As we grow older and hopefully better in our pursuit, we’re sometimes blessed to invest in the future of our sport by sharing with the next generation. We instill in them an appreciation for the beauty and opportunity of wading in the crystal clear streams while sharing the history passed down to us. Those opportunities make us better fishermen. In teaching, we are forced to consider the intricate, basic skills of the sport, which over time can become blurred by repetition. As my mentors did with me, I am careful to not “over-coach.” This allows the student to make and learn from their

mistakes. How awesome to be part of their first catch and to share in that accomplishment. If we’re lucky, at some point we are blessed to come into contact with equally experienced fishermen with whom we just click. The best fishing buddies possess a similar interest in locales and styles, but are different enough that we still learn from one another. The best fishing buddies become those who can finish your sentence, agree on the best places to fish, offer insight we didn’t consider and share learned tidbits, making both that much better. An additional bonus are those friends who are willing to take those crazy adventures such as night trips, remote bushwhacking treks and just downright crazy ideas for which they’ll catch it from their spouse when they eventually return home, well past curfew. I remember as kids how we were competitive. We even had the unofficial “Virgil Ward Award” for whoever landed the largest fish that day. Over time, a point is reached when you get just as much joy in watching a friend ply a hole for that big ol’ brown. Sometimes it’s a tag-team approach, with a spotter directing casts to a trophy fish. We realize as much excitement in our friend’s success as if it were our own, if not more! Lately, I’ve been stepping back… just a little… to give my buddy the first crack at a good run. Watching an artist at work, regardless of the canvas, is a joy. When that person is using all the combined skills of a stealthy approach, with the fly you both agree is best, making that cast in just the right spot and setting that hook, it’s like watching yourself from a distance. In that moment, you are just as elated to share and witness the moment. That moment is when you realize having a fishing buddy is priceless.

Jake’s Outdoor Adventures

an you believe it is 2022? It is the beginning of the New Year and I always use January as my fishing housekeeping month. This is the time I have all my rods repaired and my reels serviced. I also respool my reels if they need it during this time. I also make sure I get my boat to the dealer to have my engines serviced and all my repairs completed to the boat and the trailer. January is the best time to have these jobs at least started so your equipment will be ready to go when you need it. There is nothing worse than not having these items completed and the fish show up! Since it is also the beginning of the year, I renew all of my fishing organization memberships for the year. Doing it at the same time at the beginning of the year makes it easy to remember and helps me cross this task off the list for the year. If you are not a member of a fishing organization, make your New Year’s resolution to join one. Fishing clubs allow you to meet like-minded people and also help promote our sport to more people– especially young people. If you fish here on the OBX, consider joining the Outer Banks Anglers Club right here on the OBX. The club not only has good speakers at their monthly meetings but they have also taken the lead and established grants and donations to create a new artificial reef.

Now is also the time to inventory your tackle and get your shopping done. Remember to shop local and keep the money here on the OBX. We have many great tackle shops on the OBX and their prices are just as good as the big box stores, but they have the expertise in what works and what doesn’t. You can’t get that at the big box stores and remember these local tackle shops are the ones that donate money and items to fishing tournaments throughout the year. If you are a member of the Outer Banks Anglers Club, the NC Beach Buggy Association, or the Cape Hatteras Anglers Club your membership card can get you a discount at the local shops also. Now is also the time to look at your calendar and plan to fish in one of the many tournaments that take place on the Outer Banks every year. As you can see, you can get a lot accomplished during the first month of the year. Speaking of the New Year, we have a big project getting ready to start here at the Oregon Inlet Fishing Center. I will talk about this project in the February column. Now let’s just hope the bluefin tuna show up so we can start the year off with a bang! THE FLYING FISHERMAN By J. Andre

omething has happened to the fishing on the ICW and its creek branches. As early as three years ago, a dozen of Canada’s finest nightcrawlers and 15 minutes was all it took to catch all the White Perch and Bluegills you needed for a day of catfishing. On my last two outings last week, we caught a total of two white perch. I don’t remember when I reeled in my last Bluegill. There was no need to fish exclusive, elusive spots for baitfish. We could flip a worm-baited hook over the side anywhere and catch bait. Now, we must search for structure and schools. Sure, I’m getting lazy. I know, “Whaa, wha, wha!” But what happened to the catfish? My last 30 pounder was a year ago, and that was the only one that year. These results are typical of fishing year-round! Now, a 20-pound fish is a rare catch. I haven’t caught a catfish in my four last trips. The old habit of stationary fishing over traditional holes, channels, and shallows, with a fan of 4 rods, is about to be retired. It is time for me to make a radical change. Back in the 1980s, the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries stocked the Suffolk Lakes with landlock stripers. It was an excellent program, and those of us who targeted these fish were rewarded with the opportunity to catch 10-20 pound fish regularly. Each lake had bait and tackle concessions with fishermen standing in line to purchase bait, day permits, rental boats, and trolling motors. The parking lots were full of boat trailer rigs. That is all history now. All that remains are empty, abandoned parking lots. When I fly over the lakes performing some surveillance, it is rare to see a single boat on the water. So, where am I going with this story? Back then, I fished in #2, my 12-foot aluminum rowboat. Rod holders on the transom pointed a pair of seven-foot spinning rods directly to port and starboard for maximum separation. We used a slow bump trolling/drift method of fishing. We suspended live baits 50 to 75 yards behind the boat and drifted with drift socks to slowly cover the areas where schools of forage fish displayed marks on our low-tech fish finders of the day. We dropped baits down from surface floats or floated baits up from bottom weights on modified Santee Cooper rigs. The trick was to hunt for the fish and cover the ground as slowly as possible. The fish were lethargic and nearly stationary. They weren’t coming to us, so we had to go and almost bonk them on the head with the bait. It worked! I watched a catfishing video on YouTube the other day, and they were discussing using Striper Tactics to catch blue cats. They have been doing this on the big cat waters of the James, Tennessee, and Ohio Rivers for years. The lightbulb in my head turned on. Hey, great minds think alike, but sometimes, my light is slow to turn on. A pair of planer boards and drift weights are on the way. I wish we had these new drift weights back in my striper days. Number 8 will be ready to go back to the future as soon as the new gear arrives. I hope to report on the tremendous success of a new (old) tactic for hunting and catching catfish in the next article…Get slimed!

Hope everyone enjoyed a great holiday season! Conditions this month are not the best but like just about any month there are fishing opportunities around if you know where to go! Wells let’s talk about the elephant in the room. Well fish the size of an elephant anyway. Ridiculously large bluefin tuna will be surfing the waves in good numbers along the gulfstream. These beast can eclipse 800lbs!!! If you want to see one of these fish boatside it takes patience and vigilance. Small weather windows and generally rough conditions keep access to these fish limited. There are charter boats available that time of year since it is our slow time. IF you want to do it yourself find the calmest day possible and fish first and last light that seems to be when the fish tend to strike more often. Myriad of techniques are there from traditional trolling, to drifting bait, vertical jig, and even topwater. Keep a keen eye on weather forecast, outgoing tides, and the shoals around Oregon Inlet. If you prefer calmer and a more serene setting try the striper fishing in our coastal rivers. The rivers are beautiful and need to be experienced regardless of the fishing or catching. Old cypress trees, bald eagles, and loping longnosed gar set the scene where one might feel a wee bit closer to nature. Mix in some striped bass pouncing on your jig and this will definitely give you a great mark into your memory banks. Seems harsh winds get filtered out by the trees and everything is a bit warmer. Regulations for bluefin and stripers are fickle. Check out the latest info to make sure you can keep a fish or two for dinner or it’s a catch and release location or date. The info can be pulled up online with a fish rules app. Just google that and download. Anecdotally I have noticed over the years if there are boats around the season is open to keep a few. ow that winter has set in for the most part, I find myself looking for things to do. As everyone knows, winter brings very challenging weather and most of the weekends we are sitting around watching the rain, wind, snow, freezing rain or whatever mother nature throws at us. So, what do I do with my time? Well, most of December and January is spent hoping to get out offshore for some yellow fin tuna or a shot at a blue fin tuna. I just winterize my freshwater systems and add in some fuel additive to help with condensation so my boat is ready to go at a minute’s notice. After January is gone, I go ahead and shut the boat down with fogging etc. and put it away for the remainder of the winter. After I do this its time to break everything down for a good cleaning and any needed repairs. I find that Sundays in the shop with a good movie or some sports is a good way to knock things out a little at a time. If you get it done in a weekend then what? So, what do I like to do? Here is the way most of my winters are spent. I like to start with my bigger rod and reel combos, my Penn 80STW’s and bent butt rods. I take the reels off the rods, take the twopiece butt apart and start cleaning. After I get everything cleaned really good, I like to spray a little WD40 onto a cotton cloth and wipe the reel down. After I do this, this is when I strip the top shot off. I also like to use a little light grease on a cotton cloth and just wipe down the reel seat and ferrule. This helps keep things nice and clean during the fishing season. After I get things nice and clean, I put everything up until its time to put the top shot on and get things ready for spring tuna. After I get my 80-pound gear done, I move down to the 50-pound stuff then to the 30 and so on. After all my rod and reels are cleaned, lubed and put up I move to the tackle. I don’t know about you but I have several 5-gallon buckets that are full of leaders, lures, and some trash. I pick the worse one and dig in. I like to take everything out, get rid of the trash and start breaking down the rigs. If it’s sea witches and they have been used, I will take the hair off the head and tie new on and package it up. All trolling lures get a good cleaning and repair if needed then into the plastic tubs. I also break down all the leaders and redo them after sharpening the hooks. I like to do a mix of chin weights when doing the leaders so I don’t have to worry about different sizes while fishing. I start at ¼ oz and go all the way up to 1 oz. After the buckets, I move on to the daisy chains and spreader bars. These get a good inspection for chaffing and wear. If there is any sign of wear, I break it down and redo. Don’t forget to look at the rigging on your birds, teasers, and dredges. If I take my time doing this, I can make it until it’s time to start spring cleaning on the boat. Take your time and don’t make it job, make it something you want to do. I’m fortunate and have a garage workshop that has all of my fishing equipment in so its pretty easy for me to enjoy cleaning and doing maintenance on my gear. I hope that everyone has a safe and warm winter, spring isn’t to far off.

BOAT SHOW SEASON 2022

fter the holidays, boaters and anglers’ thoughts turn to Spring, and a new season of boating and fishing. Many look forward to winter boat shows, with good reason. With nearly two years of COVID hampering commerce in all markets, there’s a lot of pent-up demand for new equipment. Many boat and engine manufacturers have extremely long lead times for delivering new boats and engines. COVID has made boating and fishing a seller’s market; it’s “get yours while you can”.

The annual Miami boat show (www.miamiboatshow. com) has long been an indicator of how the year’s sales will go. Scheduled this year for February 16-20, it’s a must-see event due to its size, glamor, glitz and of course, the huge displays of new powerboats, engines and gear. If your schedule won’t permit a trip to sunny Florida in February, local shows provide plenty of new rigs and gear to see. For example, the annual Virginia Beach boat show is scheduled for January 28-30 at the Virginia Beach Convention Center (Mid-Atlantic Sports & Boat Show Event - Virginia Beach, VA (vabeach.com). If you’re in the market for a new or used rig, here are five tips for boat show shopping: 1) Do your homework before you go. Learn about which dealers will be displaying, what their deals are, what they are offering as show incentives, and which boats will be featured. Research what type, size and power boat you’re interested in, and focus in on those you plan to review. It doesn’t hurt to visit the dealers beforehand, so you’re familiar with their offerings, their salesmen, and their approach. 2) Check your finances—your cash reserves, your credit rating, and available credit, if necessary. Do some quick math on just how much boat you can afford. If you need to finance some or all of your purchase, there’s not much worse than going to the show and getting hooked on one particular model, only to find out you can’t swing it.

3) Don’t forget used rigs. The market will always yield excellent buys in the “used but not abused” market. That means there are used rigs that were likely purchased in the early 2000s to perhaps 2015 that did not get used much, and are now for sale. Look them over carefully, as you don’t want to buy someone else’s used headache. Watch for sun bleaching (could mean expensive gelcoat reconditioning), evidence of sinking (water stains, rust, mold, etc.) and damage (cracks, damaged rubrails, etc.). There are a lot of excellent used rigs out there. It just takes patience and a little research to land one. 4) Don’t skimp on the trailer. Remember, the trailer is your boat’s home for a large portion of its life. Get a trailer that matches the boat, and is large enough and strong enough to carry its loaded weight. The trailer also helps with resale value; get one that’s visually attractive so it compliments your boat. 5) Take your time. Despite the pressure to “buy now”, there’s no reason to rush. Go early, do the legwork, study the literature, and make your decision on your time. Be mindful that some dealers will stick to their guns on show special pricing and financing, however. If you’re sure about what you want, and the deal’s right, dive in and buy! CATCHIN’& COOKIN’ BEER BUTT CHICKEN A favorite of mine. Simple recipe and always delicious. * One can of beer, take the top off using a knife or scissors. Be careful not to cut yourself while trimming the aluminum. * Add to the beer in the can 3 ounces of your favorite hot sauce, 3 cloves of garlic, & ½ onion. * Clean the bird and stand him on the can of seasoned beer that is in your beer stand. (you can make these or buy them at hardware stores) * Stuff the next cavity of the bird with rosemary and shallots. * Rub the skin of the bird with olive oil and then poultry seasoning. Lastly place your bird in a smoker and let her rip. Smoke until bird is thoroughly cooked. If you don’t have a smoker you can still bake this in the oven. The beer not only gives the chicken a lot of moisture while cooking, it adds a lot of flavor to the bird. A must try.

WINTER PREPARATION By Scott Reppert Virginia Coastal Fly Anglers

hatever your preferred type of fishing this month’s article is for you. Please consider taking this magazine and going to where your fishing equipment is currently sitting and calling your name. Do you like/love to fish? Now is the time to show your devotion. Talk is cheap. Look at your stuff. What did you use this year? What did you catch and where? Wait! You did not keep a log? Do you have a phone? Did you take pictures? Think about how you are going to use a resource to keep track moving forward. Like a log. Consider using the one you are already carrying. Your equipment is still calling your name. Was it wet a lot? Was it exposed to a lot of salt? Did you invest some cash in this stuff ? Now is the time for maintenance and repair. Salt is your primary enemy. Soak reels in the sink or tub, line and all. Consider giving your rods a shower. Add some dish soap to anything you can disassemble, take off your spools if you can and rinse then wipe out any crud anywhere. Dry everything with a soft cloth. Now the fun starts! Look at the lines, gears, knobs, handles, reel seats, and any mysterious grooves and spaces and check for imperfections, nicks, more crud, and anything that needs replacement. For reels, I am a big fan of disassembly and lubrication with a synthetic lubricant. Take your time and have fun. Think of large fish. Seriously, you want your gear to be ready to fight and land your next great fish. Re-spool as needed but don’t stop yet! Do you have leaders, rigs, hooks and flies that frankly have already lived a long and productive life? Do you need something? Assess and consider being OK with getting rid of stuff if for no other reason than to make room. Last but not least. Look at and test your hook points. If you do not have one acquire a file. Diamond, glass whatever works for you. Sharpen your hooks. Please do not do it around the kids but do it. You will thank me for that if nothing else on your next time out. Bassmaster Classic Returns to Hartwell T

he world’s most prestigious professional bass tournament is returning to the site of some of the best moments in the sport’s famed history. The 2022 Academy Sports + Outdoors Bassmaster Classic presented by Huk will be held at Lake Hartwell March 4-6. It is the fourth time the crowds and pageantry of the Classic have descended on Upstate South Carolina. Takeoffs will be conducted from Green Pond Landing & Event Center, while daily weigh-ins will be held at the Bon Secours Wellness Arena. The annual Bassmaster Classic Outdoors Expo will take place at the Greenville Convention Center, both of which are in nearby Greenville. B.A.S.S. CEO Bruce Akin said the organization is excited to once again visit a venue that has become the gold standard for professional bass fishing events. “Everything about Lake Hartwell and the city of Greenville make them the perfect setting for the Super Bowl of Professional Bass Fishing,” Akin said. “The Bassmaster Classic is not only a chance for the best anglers in the world to showcase their abilities, it’s an annual celebration of the sport itself. “Lake Hartwell provides the perfect site for amazing competition, and the city of Greenville provides the hotels, restaurants and other facilities you need for an event the size of the Classic.” Hartwell is a 56,000-acre man-made reservoir situated between Georgia and South Carolina and encompassing portions of the Savannah, Tugaloo and Seneca rivers. It features a vast array of habitat and a good population of both largemouth and spotted bass that are likely to be in the prespawn phase when the Classic competitors arrive.

Nation circuit, the Carhartt Bassmaster College Series presented by Bass Pro Shops and the Bassmaster Team Championship, plus the defending Bassmaster Classic champion and winner of the final Elite Series event of the 2021 season. Angler Lands Record Red Hind

North Carolina angler boated a new state record red hind off Cape Lookout in October, and it’s a record that’s likely to stand for a while. The fish weighed 7 pounds, 1.6 ounces and measured 21.5 inches in length with a 17.5-inch girth. The new state record holder, Matthew Parr, of Wilmington, N.C., was fishing with Capt. Charles Stewart Merritt of Salt Air Ventures. They were dropping cut bait on 80-poundtest line, probably looking for big grouper. The record breaker Parr hauled from the depths was less than 2-pounds off the IGFA all tackle world record, which stands at 9 pounds even and was caught by Eddie Vanmeter out of St. Marys, Ga. in July of 2019. Previously, North Carolina did not list a state record red hind but created the category after Parr applied for the state record. The Division of Marine Fisheries creates new state record categories for fish that are exceptionally large for North Carolina. Parr’s was exceptionally large for anywhere. Although red hind are known to grow up to 23 inches and exceed 10 pounds in weight, anglers rarely encounter them that large. The typical specimen brought over the rail measures about 16 inches. Red hind is a quality table fish that is important in Caribbean commercial fisheries. In the South Atlantic it is regulated within the three grouper aggregate recreational bag limit. It is also listed in the ShallowWater Grouper Complex, which means there is a closure for the species from January through April.
