itchin’ tubes exploded in popularity following Denny Brauer’s 1998 Bassmaster Classic victory. A month before the tournament, the legendary shallow-water pitcher/flipper was on a solid summertime jig bite on a shallow flat of North Carolina’s High Rock Lake. When the jig stopped producing during Classic week, he reached for a 3.5-inch tube and discovered the fish wanted something a little different. Brauer won the 1998 Classic pitchin’ tubes. The technique has been a mainstay ever since. Unlimited Seasonal Use Tubes get bites when nothing else will, and there are no seasonal limitations. Brauer’s win came in early August in hot shallow water. I recently caught bass on a Big Bite Bait Tour Flipping Tube from the frigid winter waters of northeastern Oklahoma.

“I think it’s definitely a year-round bait,” said Brauer. “As anglers, we initially got conditioned to think tubes were a spawning-season bait. But shoot, it’s very productive year-round. As much as anything, it’s simply a finesse tool to pitch anytime the conditions call for it.” Hook Size And Rigging Are Critical I gravitate toward the 3.5-inch tube rigged with a 3/0 Mustad hook. Following his Classic win on the 3.5-inch tube, Brauer had Strike King design a larger 4.5-inch tube so he could match it with a larger 4/0 Mustad hook he felt would put more fish in the boat. Pitch the size you’re comfortable with, but be sure to match tube size to hook size. A 3.5-inch tube demands a 3/0 hook. A 4- or 4.5-inch tube marries best to a 4/0 hook. And DO NOT bury the hook point into the tube. Instead, Texas rig it with the hook point level on the back of the tube. You’ll land more fish, and it will still perform relatively snag-free. Rattles And Weight Some people love rattles; some people hate them. I stuff a glass rattle inside the body of my tubes most of the time. Line size and worm-weight size are also personal preferences determined by water clarity and the fall rate bass seem to favor. A lot of anglers use 20-pound test with a ¼-ounce weight. Brauer goes meatier with 3/8- or ½-ounce weight and 25-pound Seaguar fluorocarbon. I’ve caught bass for years with a 1/8-ounce weight and 15-pound old-school Big Game. Watch The Line You must be vigilant in watching your line where it meets the water after every single pitch or flip. Very seldom do bass just thump a tube. It’s like they’re eating a potato chip rather than chomping a bite of rib eye. Often the line will just stop falling, and you need to set the hook! Still Charting Hits Lures are like country music artists. Some bust onto the scene, score a couple hits, and soon fade from popularity. Others prove that true talent never goes away. Pitchin’ tubes are whole lot like George Strait or Reba McEntire. They were mega stars at the time Brauer won the ’98 Classic, and they’re still playing to sell out crowds 20 years later.

here’s a daytime swordfish bite developing in the northern Gulf of Mexico off Alabama. The fish have always been there, but few anglers have figured out how to catch them when the sun is out. Dustin Bedgood, aka Capt. Fed, of Orange Beach’s FED UP Charters, has spent several years learning the area’s daytime deep-water fishery. Drawing from successful captains in wellknown deep-drop locations off south Florida and Venice, Louisiana, Capt. Fed adapted techniques to a point where he’s consistent enough to take charter clients to catch swordfish. The fishery is productive just off the continental shelf about an hour and a half ride from the Alabama coast aboard Capt. Fed’s 33-foot Freeman. During daylight hours, swordfish hang out past where the bottom drops precipitously from 200 feet into 1,000-foot depths. This is where anglers can expect a typical day of four or five swordfish bites with one fish landed. The weights average about 120 pounds, with a top-end over 300 pounds. While the fish aren’t as big as in south Florida, a 150-pound sword is more than most anglers want to handcrank from those depths, anyway. “They’re a very intense fish,” said Capt. Fed. “They can hurt you very easily.” The keys to the fishery are bottom structure, the right gear and good bait. Capt. Fed fishes in 1,000 to 3,000 feet of water, and always around some type of structure. “Whether it’s a nipple, a ledge, a canyon or a salt dome, that’s where the swordfish are,” he said. “All it takes is some little feature that changes the currents and attracts bait.” Good maps of the ocean floor and sophisticated electronics are necessary to find the right type of bottom in several thousand feet of water. On top of high-end sonar, Capt. Fed uses custom J&M Tackle Blackout Sword Rods with lots of backbone but a very soft tip. Swordfish don’t just load up on the rod. They slash at the bait first, and a soft tip is needed to

notice the bump when there’s so much line out. “Once you get it set, the rod will develop a rhythm with the waves and the current. You’ve got to watch that rod,” said Capt. Fed. “If you see it do anything that’s not normal, something has happened. That’s when you start reeling it up or dropping it down. You’ve got to tease them just like any other billfish.” Capt. Fed fishes Shimano 50W and 80W reels. The drag is set loose because swordfish have soft mouths, and battles can last an hour or more. The reels are loaded with 80-pound braid tied into a 150-foot wind-on leader of 250-pound mono with a Bimini twist. Fed uses a minimum of 5 pounds of weight, and secures Lindgren-Pitman lights to his leader with rubber bands. Bait is important, and tying it correctly takes practice. After the initial slash, the jig is up if the hook tears out or the bait doesn’t retain a natural presentation. A 10-inch squid sewn with 70-pound waxed floss around a 10/0 to 12/0 J hook is one of Capt. Fed’s favorite baits. While an average day might bring one swordfish to the boat, Fed said he’s also seen five-fish days when conditions are perfect. Swords are very sensitive to the moon, and daily feeding times seem to correspond with moonrise and moonset. Capt. Fed plans trips so there’s time to load coolers with grouper and tilefish before switching to swordfish through the prime moon position. The swordfish bite goes on year-round, but Fed said he’s noticed an April into July peak, which could be attributed to more time on the water during peak tourist season in Orange Beach. And that brings up another reason to fish the Alabama Gulf Coast. There’s plenty to keep the whole family happy while the anglers are out on the water. Capt. inters on the island were always cold with strong winds out of the north. It was a biting, wet cold that would chill you to the bone in a very short time. We used our fireplace every night, in addition to the heating system. As the favorite son and part time rowboat captain, I was tasked with going out to the wood pile to retrieve the next set of split wood. As a kid, I could only handle about four of the pieces of oak. There were two things that I noted on these trips. First, I loved the smell of oak, as I wrestled them into my arms. Second, there was a strange joy in going out, in what seemed below zero temperatures, and coming back into the warmth and crackle of the fireplace. To this day, I still enjoy going out in the cold, as the macho gatherer of wood for our fireplace. Fortunately, there were professional fisherman, who braved the weather to bring in fresh seafood. I noticed that blowfish were never sold in the fish market. Instead, stripper, flounder and lobsters were always available. The owners of the market were, I think, Norwegian and knew fish. One of the market owners had a smokehouse and would always have smoked fish. One of the delicacies that I particularly enjoyed was smoked whiting. This was a firm meat with an easily removed backbone. This created a backstrap of smoked meat pleasure. Good with a little cream cheese on a cracker or just eating a piece was an absolute pleasure. Each fish was brined and smoked in the old school Scandinavian style. In those days, blue crabs were not harvested during the winter. I do think this was one of the keys to the large population, as no dredging was done. I have always believed that removing crabs in this manner, obviously reduces the number of crabs, but also destroys the eel grass, so necessary for so many species to generate and survive. We didn’t miss the crabs, however, as Mom experimented with the readily available seafood and we ate just fine, minus blowfish and crabs. At some point a fisherman did some long – lining and discovered tile fish. These now became the rage and everyone said they tasted like lobster. I had been introduced to lobster at an early age and I did not agree that this was a substitute for lobster. Mom was enamored with this new species and suddenly, like her blowfish obsession, we started getting tile fish in a range of different preparations. Thanks to divine intervention, we also were introduced to one of the local lobstermen. He offered to sell us lobster at wholesale prices. Our tile fish extravaganza was nipped in the bud, as Mom loved lobster and Pop and I were given a reprieve. We had lobster in several forms, boiled and broiled. (Pop would carefully kill the lobster, prior to its ultimate preparation.) Our favorite recipe was to use our new gas grill. I would go out into the bay and gather fresh, floating eel grass and place it on the grill. The split lobsters were placed on the grass and cooked. This gave a somewhat smokey flavor to the lobster. My parents did a lot of entertaining. Mom loved to cook and share her joy with others. This helped me to maintain my chubby physique and love of entrees. It was a time where drinks and appetizers were served, prior to the main meal. As the only child present during many of these festive evenings, it allowed me to observe grownups in their natural habitat. Manhattans, martinis and a variety of beers were available upon request. There were no “IPAs” with a seasonal touch of pumpkin spice. It was Pabst, Schlitz and Schaefer, amongst others. I was never a fan. For me and others, Mom’s cooking was the highlight, even if was simply broiled flounder with French fries it was excellent. I also came to understand that this was important as a buffer for the first/second round of drinks. In those days, drinking and smoking were simply part of a social evening. It was prior to understanding that smoking was bad for you and secondhand smoke was not even on the radar. Drinking and driving were more accepted and a boon to auto repair shops. We, also, had a secret weapon for entertaining, a player piano with about 50 rolls. After enjoying Mom’s cooking, the next activity was to gather around the piano and sing songs. Turns out that I could play Scott Joplin’s Maple Leaf Rag or Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue without missing a note. This was, of course dependent on the piano roll being correctly installed on the spindle and maintaining a good rhythm with my feet on the pedals. It was an opportunity to see how real pianists played, as I watched the keys move to create the music. This inspired me to play the guitar, as I didn’t think that I could ever be that coordinated. The other thing that I observed was that the player piano was enjoyed by all the generations that could read. Whether it was my friends or my parent’s friends, everyone stood around the piano and sang. So, the night got later, the booze flowed, and the singing got louder. There seemed to be less importance on the words and more harmonies were launched. More than once, family friends would decide to spend the night. Many would continue singing, all the way to bed. Generally, this was not the best of accapella singing and was a precursor to very loud snoring. Eventually, the morning came and I learned about the medicinal qualities of the Bloody Mary. CABIN FEVER By Mike Buss

t’s cold outside, the wind is blowing 30 knots, frost is on the pond, football season is over and you have come down with a condition known as cabin fever. It happens this time of year every year. This year why don’t you get busy and cure yourself of this unwelcome condition? Here are three cures for this condition. Clean and service your equipment, improve your skills, and learn something new. Let’s look at each of these cures in a little more depth. It always amazes me how much better my rod and reel work after a good thorough cleaning and a little maintenance. A good cleaning with a mild soap is all that is required and recommended for most rods and reels. Don’t use detergents, they can contain abrasives that can damage the finish, remove the lubrication, and can even permanently damage your gear. A great way to restore your rod is to give it a light polishing with a furniture polish after you have washed and dried it. Avoid getting the polish on the cork handle. It could gum up the pores in the cork and make it difficult to hold when wet. Lastly, check your fly lines and backing for excessive wear and tear. If you think you have a weak spot in your line, grasp the line on either side of the weak spot and give it a good steady pull. It’s better to have the line break now than out on the water with the biggest fish of the season hooked. If the line doesn’t break, but you don’t trust it, replace it. The best thing about improving your skills is the cost. It only costs time and we have a lot of that this time of year. This improvement can come from getting better at tying flies, tying knots, and with casting accuracy and distance. Next time you sit down in front of the tv grab a spool of monofilament and practice tying knots. The ability to tie a variety of knots confidently will make your fishing more enjoyable. You can always learn something new. This is the season of flea markets, boat and fishing shows. All of them have local experts ready and willing to share their knowledge. All you need to do is attend, pay attention and ask questions. We have local fly-fishing clubs that are always looking for new members and they all have a lot of local knowledge that can be accessed by simply asking questions. If you live near a fly shop, check it out. This is the time when they usually have their own fly tying and fly-casting classes. Just ask and signup. There is a cure for cabin fever and if you follow these three prescriptions you will be well on your way to getting better. The flip side is your equipment will be in better shape for the start of the season in a few months. Ttight lines.

Hello people. This is the Flying Fishermen. They probably have me on a short leash being the newbie contributing writer, so I’ll try to stay on topic and give you only the best scoop. If you want to read about fishing in Virginia – past, present, and future you have found the right place. We’ll cover recent fishing trips, tips, gear reviews and general angling interest stories (no lies, mostly truth). I try to keep it on the light side, so if you want dry facts and figures, sorry, not here. While I have fished just about everywhere within a 75-mile radius of Great Bridge (out to the Cigar, 26 Mile Hill, Fish Hook, The Point, etc.) I have become lazy and more subject to pain in my retired years. We now fish the local fresh waterways such as Back Bay, North Landing River, Northwest River, Suffolk Lakes, etc. I haven’t given up my love of a seriously bent fishing rod and a tough fight. Most of the time the target is big Blue Catfish, but we’ll cover everything here as long as it relates to fishing. The “Flying” part of the “Flying Fisherman” is related to my biplane, Yellow Peril, or just YP for short. I use YP to do recon of my fishing holes and ensure there is enough water to float my boat, Number 8. You know how it gets at the boat ramps of our local rivers and Back Bay. After a good blow from the North, there isn’t enough water to launch a Styrofoam cooler lid. I can see that from the biplane. YP also helps me check out my fishing holes to ensure I don’t have any “Homesteaders.” Any excuse to go flying. If I have a future here, you will also read about my fishing buddies Catfish Pete, Tugboat Eddy, and “The Son-in-Law.” Pay close attention. In the descriptions of their recent fishing exploits you will gather plenty of tactics, techniques, and procedures to catch the big ones. I hope you enjoy. This month’s tip: Yes, it’s about to get freezing cold and many fish species are already as active as a cinder block. You probably have a severe case of cabin fever by now and your fishing tackle is collecting dust. Have no fear, the fish are near. When it’s hunting season and the critters are getting shot, it’s time to go catfishing because the bite is getting hot. This is one of the best times of the year to go after trophy catfish on the Tidewater Area rivers and central VA lakes. This is the Blue Cat Fishing Capital of the United States. In the Lower James it is possible to catch a 100-pound fish. Sixty pounders are not uncommon. In Southern Virginia Beach and Chesapeake there are 40 pounders waiting to be caught, right now! The World Record Blue Cat was caught in 2011 at the John H. Kerr / Buggs Island Lake in Clarksville, VA. Get out there and get some of that! Get Slimed

Striper fishing has moved to the Chowan and Roanoke rivers and its tributaries. Some folks fish on anchor and fish cut bait on the bottom sorting through catfish an stripers. Unfortunately my attention deficient self cannot hold still long enough to give that a go. I prefer to cast jigs, rattletraps, and stickbaits around cypress knees and stumps along the rivers mouths . Your gonna lose some tackle but most days double digit numbers are fairly common. As always keeping an eye on the bottom machine. This will keep you on a bend in the river with pods of fish. Not all turns in the river are created equal. Farther east arounds Mann’s harbor and Currituck bridge there will be a scattered pick and on the right day an angler could get a handful of bites. Around the inlet things will be pretty quiet except for the unusual fat striper, dogshark, or seal swimming around. East of the Inlet its go big or go home! Ginormous Bluefin tuna will be terrorizing baitfish and drags on your reels. Strong numbers of these fish will be near the gulf stream ready to eat a ballyhoo. First and last light seem to produce the most strikes. Often these fish can eclipse 500lbs! As always visit one of our local shops to get rigged up on the latest fish techniques and tackle. Should You Replace YOur Tired OUtboard with a Newer Model? By John Tiger Boaters are eventually faced with a decision about their aging outboard — rebuild or open the checkbook and buy brand new? It takes hefty green to buy a new engine today. Repairing what you have can be a reasonable alternative. However, there’s more to it than the initial cash outlay. Newer outboards have much more sophisticated fuel management systems, and like today’s cars, pollute significantly less than those made even ten years ago. In the end, the bottom line is--are they worth their price tag, especially for a “toy” that likely gets used less than one total month per year? HOW OLD IS OLD? Your outboard, depending on its age and horsepower size, may be “ancient and crusty” or it may already have most of today’s engines’ features and benefits. If yours is an ‘80s or later, chances are it has: • Overboard fuel drains; these were eliminated in the early 1970s. Prior to that, unburned fuel that never made it into the engine was simply drained into the water. • Power trim and tilt (very handy for skiing, fishing and even docking and storage). Pretty much any outboard over 30hp has had power trim as standard equipment or an option, since the 1980s. • Electronic oil injection (makes for much easier fuel-ups, and pollutes far less than pre-mixing gas and oil). • Primer starting (vs. chokes; an electric primer shoots fuel into the carburetors, making cold starts much quicker and easier). • Electronic Fuel Injection: EFI makes an outboard easier to start and run, less smoky and better on fuel, as well as just a bit better than a carbureted engine when it comes to pollution. If your engine has some or all of these features, then there are only two significant advantages that buying a brand-new engine could give you. Outboard manufacturers have been forced by the EPA to build and sell engines that pollute less. As a result, since the late 1990s most outboards have either been of the four-stroke variety, or a newer technology called DFI—direct fuel injection. Like older outboards, these DFI engines use an oil-burning two-stroke design, but they inject the fuel/air and oil charge directly into the cylinder with such high precision and timing that the result is a dramatic drop in emissions, and an equally dramatic rise in fuel economy, as well as less oil use. What’s that all mean? Simply, today’s four-stroke and DFI two-stroke outboards burn between 35% and 50%

less fuel than their older carbureted brothers, and reduce emissions pollution an equal amount. COST DIFFERENCES It helps to look at what buying new costs compared to repairing or rebuilding what you have. A typical new mid-sized outboard (75 to 130 horsepower) will cost you at least $9000—plus controls and propeller. Rebuilding an older engine of the same size might cost about $3000 or so—or about a third of the cost of a new engine. That $6000 (or more) difference will buy a lot of gas, so consider carefully. WHAT’S THE RIGHT ANSWER? There’s a lot to consider. Money, family time, environmental consciousness are all valid concerns. • Your budget may not permit buying a new outboard. Rebuilding what you have may be your only course. • If you’re concerned about reducing emissions, a new DFI two-stroke or four-stroke engine may be for you. • Regardless of how much you use the engine, the initial cost differences between buying new and repairing old are so large that “potential fuel savings” with a new engine will be negligible in the long run. This consideration should be low on your list, unless fuel prices rise dramatically. • Consider your local dealer and his availability, and the time you actually have to use your boat. You need that outboard to run properly, every time—because there’s family and friends wanting to have fun with it now— not two weeks from now. A new engine may be a wise investment. You’re likely to get quicker service turnaround from your local dealer if you buy a new engine there. If you’re thinking of saving a few bucks buying from a discount dealer, will you be happy about bringing it to that dealer for service if he’s hundreds of miles away? • Lastly, if you’re considering rebuilding, talk you your local dealer about it. Get firm cost estimates, and ask about a warranty. If your engine is older than 1980 or so, forget it. It’s too old, parts likely too scarce, and technology is way out of date. If it’s an ‘80s or later engine and a new engine is out of the question, rebuilding is a good option that will add more years to your old outboard’s life. Finally, consider the “new engine” factor—that is, there’s nothing quite like a new engine. It starts easier, runs nicer, idles better, and shifts more smoothly. For many, the “Wow, its new” factor is enough to head down to the dealer to check out the new iron. John Tiger has published columns and articles about boating and towing for over 25 years. CATCHIN’& COOKIN’ JIM BAUGH’S RECIPE OF THE MONTH

KETO SHRIMP SAUCE ON SEA BASS

Here is a variation on one of our favorite classic seafood dishes and you will lose weight while dining on it. Ingredients. 2 cups white wine 1 cup fresh mushrooms 2 diced tomatoes 5 spring onions 3 peppers, one yellow, red and green, sliced 3 cloves garlic chopped ½ stick unsalted good European butter Organic whipping cream, 1 cup or so ½ teaspoon Xanthan Gum 6 sea bass pan seared filets in avocado oil 1 to 2 pounds of peeled and deveined shrimp

To make the shrimp sauce: Chop all veggies and set aside. Melt butter and garlic in sauce pan then add the wine and bring to a quick boil. Add all veggies, stir and simmer until all are tender (add tomatoes last). Now add the whipping cream, stir, then add the shrimp. Stir and let simmer for 15 minutes. If you need to thicken the sauce use a very little bit of Xanthium gum. Works like a charm. Pan sear your filets seasoned and/or breaded if you like. Once done, spoon the shrimp sauce on top. Incredibly delish!

A couple tips, the boat has bait, however, a lot of anglers prefer to bring their own cut bait. Salted mackerel is a good one, I usually just stick to cut squid and then bum some bait once onboard. Also, it’s a good idea to bring a lunch and snacks because it is a long day. The boat leaves at 3 a.m. sharp and sometimes a wee bit earlier if everyone is there. We like to get there around 2 a.m., board, get our equipment straight, then sleep for a couple hours on the way to the fishing grounds. AREA ANGLER CLUBS The Great Bridge Fisherman’s Association is a family-oriented fishing club located in the Great Bridge area of Chesapeake, Virginia. Our charter is to introduce new anglers to the sport of recreational fishing while promoting the conservation of our resources. The diversity of its membership covers all aspects of recreational fishing from freshwater to saltwater, surf to pier, and inshore to offshore fishing. The club is active in the community, sponsoring various events including Wish a Fish, an Annual Scholarship to high school seniors pursuing higher education and inshore party boat fishing for both our senior and disabled residents. Our Tournament Director also ensures that the membership sponsors and participates in various inter and intra club tournaments throughout the year. Some of our annual activities include a banquet, lead pouring, oyster roast and fishing flea market. Monthly meetings are held the first Monday of the month from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. There is always a guest speaker talking on a wide range of topics and there are plenty of door prizes, raffles and snacks to round off the night. We meet at the Great Bridge Baptist Church located at 640 Battlefield Blvd South, Chesapeake, Virginia across the street from the YMCA. Guests are always welcome. The Tidewater Anglers Club (TAC) was founded in February of 1941 at a meeting at the Monticello Hotel in Norfolk, Virginia. The objectives of the TAC were the same then as they are today—to promote legislation and fishing practices that effectively provide protection of the environment and our resources. TAC is an organization that influences the customs and practices for the conservation and propagation of fish and kindred creatures. The TAC organization is committed to the promotion of true sportsmanship among all fishermen along with providing entertainment and education for its members. The club has grown into a truly multidisciplined angling organization with almost equal individual and family memberships. Each year there are 11 monthly membership meetings and an Annual Awards Banquet. There are also club activities such as tournaments, family fishing days, a fish fry and other events which allow members to gather for fun and fellowship. The monthly meetings are held on the second Tuesday of each month at 7:00 p.m. at Bayside Presbyterian Church, 1400 Ewell Road, Virginia Beach, VA. (Intersection of Independence Blvd. and Ewell Rd.) Guests are always welcome and we usually serve light refreshments. Monthly meetings always include an educational talk or presentation on some aspect of fishing. Also members submit fishing contest forms and this information is used to select the winners of our annual trophies. The club maintains a record of all fish reported to determine club records. Special events bring everyone together for some fun and relaxation. These include hot dog and chili nights, our annual fish fry and our annual awards banquet for the awarding of the fish trophies. We welcome you to join the Tidewater Anglers Club. We are a group of about 100 members, of various levels of fishing experience, ranging from those of us who have not purchased their first fishing rod or tackle box or own a boat to those of us who have been fishing for over 60 years. In 2008, a group of men gathered on the Outer Banks with the purpose of organizing a club for fishing and called themselves the Outer Banks Anglers Club (OBXAC). The OBXAC meets the last Monday of every month at the Kern-Pitts Center located behind the Southern Shores Town Hall at 7:00 pm. The meetings are open to anyone, whether they are an experienced fisherman or those who are just starting out. At each meeting, the club has a monthly guest speaker that may be a member, a local fishing captain, biologists, state or local marine agencies, or has a connection with fishermen. Also, members will discuss their fishing trips and share information and sometimes pictures from the trips. Every month, members will submit their exemplary catches for the Fish of the Month contest. During the break, refreshments are served and members and guests can network. After the break, a short business meeting is conducted and ends with a raffle for a $50 gift certificate from TW’s Bait and Tackle, as well as a 50/50 raffle. The sea chest comes with a ¼-inch rubber gasket seal, stainless steel bolts, washers, a breather valve and acrylic lid that can be custom engraved with the boat’s name or boat manufacturer’s name upon ordering. The crucial benefit of installing Hooker’s sea chest system is simple: less air in your system, especially with step-hull boats. The sea chest allows the boat to pull clean water in and keep air out of the hoses, therefore out of the system. Paired with the sea chest, Hooker has created custom manifolds cut from a solid block of schedule 80 PVC, which ensures longevity and quality. The manifold cleans up the aesthetics on the system by simplifying it and allowing water flow to be dispersed to multiple livewells as needed. The Hooker pump system will keep you ahead of the rest when it comes to live baiting.
