hile mystic grouper can be caught year-round in the Bahamas, the winter months are our favorite time of year. Whenever a weather window presents itself, we point our bow east across the Florida Straights in search of these deep-water bottom dwellers. Mystics are one of the lesser-known grouper species, simply because anglers don’t fish deep enough to target them. Like all grouper, they are excellent to eat and usually weigh from 15 to 50 pounds, although they can grow much larger. It takes special gear to fish the 800- to 1,200-foot depths where we find mystics. Armed with Shimano Tiagra 80 WAs and Shimano Tiagra 50 WAs equipped with Hooker Electric Autostop drives, we string up 65- to 100-pound Power Pro braid on Crafty One Custom’s Deep Drop Rods. We begin by paying close attention to our Humminbird Solix sonar with CHIRP HD digital technology to locate bottom structure. We look for cones, holes, drop-offs, ledges and deep-water ridges. Once viable structure is located, we position the boat above it with engines out of gear to judge how wind and current will manipulate our drift. Then the

boat is repositioned up-current from the structure and the deep-drop rigs are readied. When targeting mystics, we use our www.ThreeBuoysFishing.com grouper deep-drop rigs made with three 8/0 VMC 3x Circle Hooks on 100-pound branch lines off of 12 feet of 150-pound main line. For bait, we prefer fresh-cut 8-inch strips of dolphin, tuna, wahoo or barracuda. Many deep-drop anglers claim, “no light, no bite,” but our experience has proven that, especially with mystics, we catch more and bigger fish without lights. We deploy two rods on opposite sides of the boat. Lead weights in the 10-pound range are the rule of thumb, but weight can be adjusted to the current. After the weights hit bottom, the reels are left in freespool to lay the rigs straight down on the bottom. The engines should be used to decrease the boat’s drift to a standstill, if possible. If the boat drifts, let out line to keep the rigs on bottom. When the rod tip bumps and shakes, resist the urge to lock up the drag and retrieve line. Wait a minute or two for additional fish to sense the commotion. They’ll often eat the remaining baits. When it’s time to strike, lift the reel’s drag to strike (pre-set to 20 pounds of drag) and slowly start your retrieve. Big mystic grouper put up quite a fight at first, and you might even think you’ve hung bottom. Be patient and slowly gain as must line as possible. When fish are about halfway up, their air bladders expand and create lift. They will begin to float your rig up to the surface. Finding bait becomes more important than at any other time of year. Goebel likes to get out well before dawn in search of shad or herring flickering near the surface, especially when a big moon keeps baitfish active all night. Diving birds are also a dead giveaway. They are likely feeding on baitfish pushed by stripers from below. “A lot of times if there’s bait there, I won’t even worry about marking fish on the graph,” Goebel said. “I’ll just put out my lines and start fishing where the bait is.”

here aren’t many anglers willing to endure the frigid early morning temperatures of winter on a large reservoir. But for those who can handle a little discomfort, right now is the best time of year to hook up with the striper of a lifetime. Around the Southeast, in reservoirs where striped bass were introduced, falling water temperatures spur changes in behavior that make the largest fish in the lake susceptible to anglers. Those 30- to 50-pounders are feeding up right now. They’re storing up reserves that will take them through the spring spawn. “It’s trophy striper season,” said Shane Goebel, of Big Ol’ Fish Guiding Service. “The bigger fish are participating a little better. This time of year, we start going after those big ol’ hogs that are chasing the big baits.” The large summer schools broke up months ago. Stripers are spread out and on the move, following baitfish into the creek mouths and up into the backs of the creeks. Big fish move shallow when water temps hit the mid to low 50s on the lakes Goebel guides in the mountains of north Georgia and western North Carolina. It might take some searching to find them, but the rewards can be huge.

Because the stripers are continually moving with the bait, covering water is crucial. Goebel said to troll as many baits in as wide a spread as you can handle. Herring are great on lakes where they are present, but this time of year you should also work some big gizzard shad or trout into the spread. Sometimes it takes a big mouthful to convince big fish to eat. Goebel runs baits 30 to 40 feet behind planer boards. He’ll drop freelines 100 to 150 feet behind the boat. If the area where he finds bait isn’t too shallow, he’ll put a little bit of weight ahead of the baits on the inside boards to cover more water vertically. He slow trolls at about half a mile per hour. This is a pattern Goebel fishes all the way into May, when stripers have moved into a pre-spawn phase. It might not produce the numbers of fish that downlining into summer mega-schools will, but the fish are generally a lot bigger than those 5- to 10-pound summer schoolies. f Costa Rica isn’t already on your bucket list, it should be. Famous for both inshore and offshore fishing, it’s also a country with incredible biodiversity and exciting eco-tourism opportunities. In short, there’s something for every sportsman and adventure seeker here. From a fishing perspective, the west coast of this Central American country is most favored with several significant cities and ports including Jaco, Quepos and, of course, Golfito. It’s Los Suenos, however, where

my wife, Felicia and I found outstanding action on a trip last April. We worked the inshore grounds, catching huge roosterfish, rainbow runners, grouper, jacks and even mahi. We also decked a big cubera snapper. Of course, we did have an edge. Coastal Angler’s very own Costa Rica inshore reporter Capt. Carlos Arguedas and his first-mate son, Christopher, were our charter crew. “This really is a terrific place to fish,” said Arguedas, “We have access to a lot of different spots ranging from very close to the marina to 50 miles away. The roosterfish action is unbelievable here but we also catch big cubera snapper, amberjack, groupers and huge red snappers, too.” Arguedas loves to take clients for roosterfish because they fight so hard, are found close to port, and grow big. He’s had a 90-pounder grace his deck. For these, he’ll slow troll live baits like blue runners, herring, sardines or bonita. All of these baits, impaled on size 8 circle hooks, also attract other large predators; so you never know what to expect when the rod doubles over. “Roosterfish are very impressive when you first see them,” said Arguedas. “They are exotic-looking with big dorsal rays, a huge mouth and striped flanks. They are stunning to see for the first time. They are also exceptionally strong. Fight a 20-pounder and you’ll think you have a 40-pounder at the end of the line. They jump, too, and shake their head, so remember to lower your rod tip when that fish comes up or you’ll tear the hook free.” Among the other big fish that hit the deck for Arguedas’ crew on a regular basis are goliath grouper that can top 400 pounds. These are targeted around local reefs. If you want to run offshore, sailfish, tuna and marlin abound within 10 miles of port. Dorado, sometimes topping 30 pounds, can be tempted within sight of the coast. Costa Rica’s tropical climate makes it a year-round destination. Most travelers prefer to visit during the dry season, which runs from December through April, but you’ll find lighter crowds and lower travel prices during the “green” or rainy season from May to November. he first time I saw someone spearfishing, I was intrigued and wondered out loud how hard it would be to load a speargun. A friend heard me and said, “I’m sure you can do it. It’s probably more about technique than brute strength.” He was right. It’s not uncommon to struggle to load your first speargun, and you might suspect they made the bands too short. If you give it some time and use the right technique, it will become easy. First, some safety tips: 1) Never load a speargun out of the water. 2) Keep the safety on until you intend to shoot a fish. 3) Even with the safety on, treat it like a loaded weapon, never let the tip point at anyone. 4) Use tip protectors when not in use, so you don’t scratch anything. Some spearguns are loaded by resting the butt of the gun on your hip and pulling the bands toward the shaft notches. Others are loaded by resting the butt high on the middle of the chest and pulling the bands toward your sternum. Hip-loading spearguns are commonly used by scuba divers, as chest loading can be difficult when wearing a buoyancy compensator vest. Freedivers are less constricted by gear, so they normally use chest-loading spearguns. These have longer range because the shaft tabs sit closer to the butt of the gun. Now, some loading tips: 1) Wear gloves and wetsuit to prevent slips, scrapes or bruising. Some wetsuits have a loading pad built into the chest. 2) Don’t look down and hunch over when loading the bands. Push forward with your chest and pull the band swiftly with your arms, so the shaft tabs are pushed forward to meet the incoming

band. 3) Use a loading tab (if using a wood gun). This simple device makes things much easier by allowing you to first hip load the band to the loading tab and then raise the butt to your chest for the final pull. Although it’s a two-step process, it can be done quickly and will feel much easier. 4) If your bands are still too hard to load, use three longer bands. 5) Work out, lift weights, work on core and upper body. Try bench presses, seated rows, bent over rows, pushups and pull-ups. Bands and dumbbells can be incorporated into your workout routine, whether at the gym or home. he action in northwest Costa Rica has once again been off the charts as FishingNosara celebrates its 10th season of charter fishing. All five boats are in the water and scoring big for their clients, with 51 trips logged in November. Big dorados are the staple catch this time of year, but it was a welcome surprise to see swarms of billfish in the mix. The team nabbed 12 marlin releases, 24 sailfish releases, 217 dorados, and five roosterfish releases. One of these roosters was a nearworld-record at 72 pounds. On Nov. 19, Capt. Alex on the Harvester posted the best trip of the month with Terry and Julie Edwards’ group. They loaded up the trophy case with excellent releases. A 300-plus-pound blue marlin was the headliner of the trip for these Texas anglers, and shortly after that battle, the 32-foot mega panga nabbed a wonderful sailfish release. Team Edwards came inshore to finish the day, and saved the best for last… that massive 72-pound roosterfish.

The IGFA All-Tackle Record for roosterfish is 114 pounds, and the second-place fish is 85 pounds. This fish caught by the Harvester wasn’t far off the second place catch. Most impressively, the above-mentioned IGFA record catches were posted in 1960 and 1954 respectively. This size of roosterfish has not been seen in more than five decades. On the same day, other members of Julie Edwards’ family had a big time on the 32-foot Discoverer with a blue marlin release of their own. Capt. Carlos estimated this fish at 250 pounds upon release. Also in November, FishingNosara Hall of Famer Bill Harris took to the 28-foot bar-room brawler Explorer and opened up her season with a billfish grand slam! A big blue marlin was the highlight of the morning, and it was followed by a late-day striped marlin. Bill nabbed the first marlin, and Mark Scott scored the second. A nice Pacific sailfish caught by Diane Turner completed the grand slam for these Tampa, Fla.based anglers. They didn’t go home empty handed, either, thanks to five big tasty dorado catches spread throughout the day. On the Discoverer, the team of Eli Bedran, Andrew Lipps, Kelsey Harry and Laurie Harry report a fantastic blue marlin release, the first of the year for the big battleship, plus six lovely dorados. John Purdy, John Van Diver, Mike Pickelsimer and Dale McElroy fished in early November and reported 11 sweet dorados on ice. The Harvester has been itching for action, and found what she was looking for as these monsters topped out at 60 pounds. The action was so hot that Capt. Tom Noel, aka Paddleboat Tom, moved to Florida from Michigan in 1979. He closed his grocery store, loaded a pickup truck with three paddleboats, his wife Joy, two sons, a daughter and the family dog and headed south. Tom set up shop in his garage in their Lake Clarke Shores home. After a few years, Joy put her foot down and insisted that he find a warehouse. Tom rented a space next to their current location, just off Forest Hill Blvd in West Palm Beach. A couple of years later he bought the 3,000 square-foot warehouse. Tom’s sons Rob and Tom are also involved with the business. Noel’s Distributing sells safety equipment, fire extinguishers, flares, rope, anchors and a warehouse full of other boating supplies to their clients, predominately in the Keys, along the east coast and in central Florida. Out of the 23 competing boats, 22 teams landed fish, bringing 152 wahoo to the scales in the process. Team Who’s Your Daddy took top team honors with 16 fish weighing a total of 231.5 pounds and took home $15,000 in cash winnings. Second place was Team Blitzsea, which earned $7,500 in cash for their 21 fish and a total catch weight of 206.4 pounds. Team Murderize, out of Freeport, Grand Bahama, finished third, taking home $2,500 in cash winnings for a catch of 11 fish with a total catch weight of 193.6 pounds. Team Little Giant caught the largest wahoo of the tournament at 50.7 pounds. Tournament festivities included live local entertainment nightly, a cocktail reception poolside for the captains’ meeting, a cookout on day one of the tournament, and a closing awards party on the great lawn, featuring a buffet, live entertainment and a full open bar. Winter is here, the fronts are coming through every 6 or 7 days. If you are after big bass, you are here at the right time! With December having some really cold days, the water temps have dipped into the low 50s - that is all it takes to get the spawn triggered. I went scouting in the airboat for bass beds on the Kissimmee chain and most of them are in a foot of water, all male fish. The females should not be far away. Most times you can find the staging areas of the female bass, usually within 40 yards. Look for some type of structure like Kissimmee grass, reeds, bull rushes, or other cover. Find their spot and you can really be successful at catching big bass. These are the places I look for all winter. Once you find

The time to fish the big O for bass and crappie is now! The main spawn for both is going on now and will continue through late Spring. Try gearing your trip around either the full moon or new moon phase. This timeframe will put the fish on or near their beds and can help increase your odds at landing that big bass or crappie (speck) as we call em’ here. If you are bass fishing, a good area to fish is in the northwest corner of the lake called the Monkey box. Other areas around the Monkey box that have been producing is around Dyess ditch area; point of Horse Island as well as the west-side of Dupree bar and on down Observation shoal fishing the grass edges. The best boat ramp to use when fishing these areas is the Harney Pond canal located conveniently between the cities of Clewiston and Okeechobee on hwy 78/441. Artificial lures for bass that have been working are: Flipping/pitching

them it is like fishing in a barrel. Artificial baits should be fished slow. I prefer a plastic lizard type bait in watermelon seed color. The state has sprayed a lot of the open water hydrilla. This helped push most big fish out of open water and into shallower cover. The crappie bite is really good on the alligator chain of lakes. The fish are still in open water grouping up ready to start making their way in to compete for spawning area. I expect them to move in to the grass by January. Fish from the edge of the grass lines on out to open water until you find them. Jigs tipped with a minnow is a sure thing. On a recent trip we caught most of the fish on the drop offs. Many nice Crappie have already been caught this season and the first of this year’s Shad run has begun. Shad are arriving early this season, this could be a stellar year as we hardly every start seeing them before the end of December. Several have been caught in the St. John’s just north of the I-4 bridge and they are moving south to spawn. Our annual One-Day Crappie Tournament hosted at Boat Tree Marina on December 8th had a great turn-out for both youth and adult divisions. More than 30 youth anglers fished from the docks at Boat Tree Marina competing for trophies and prizes. Several nice size crappies were caught including a 14” whopper that is currently leading the over-all youth division. The 7-11 age division had several entries, Daurell Winchester age 7 taking the 1st place trophy and Grand-prize of a new rod and reel provided by HH Rods and Reels with his huge 14-1/8” beauty. Second place was 9-year-old Kaden Woulfe with a 12-1/2” Crappie and a tie for

3rd place between 8-year-old Drew Goggin and Savana Woulfe age 8 with 11-1/2” beauties. The 12-15 age group’s winner walked away with the trophy for his 11-1/4” fish (Shane Sapp). Thanks to Gibson Truck World in Sanford for offering up $100 bucks for the top adult entry. The largest of the day was caught by Rusty Booth with a whopper tipping the scale at 2.25 lbs. Second place was Wes Young with a 2.01 lb. speck and 3rd was Scott Taylor with a 1.65 lb. entry. Several other nice fish were also weighed as more than 35 anglers fished the event and enjoyed lunch provided by the Boat Tree staff. The November winner of the month was Rick Hacker with a Crappie over 14”, no Shad entry for the month of November. The biggest fish either Shad or Crappie has yet to be caught for this season so get out there and catch the winning fish!

Slow trolling a large live wild shiner under a cork will pay off. Lake Harris, Lake Eustis and their canals as well as Lake Dora and the Apopka Canal will be the best places to look and hunt for the first wave of bedding bass. Start the year off right - go out and catch some fish! The bass are finally schooling due to the recent cooler weather and are chasing shad and fattening up for the spawn during January and February full and new moon phases. The bass bite in the Harris Chain of Lakes has been a little slow due to the recent cold fronts moving in and out, but that should be changing soon with any slight warming trend in January. Try Chatter Baits, bright orange or chrome blue back Rattle Traps, Junebug or black with blue tail trick worms, Senko’s or speed worms worked slowly along the deeper Kissimmee grass close to deeper water or ledges. The bigger fish will be staging close to the mouths of canals, creeks or the Dead River. Areas with different types of cover such as Kissimmee grass, reeds, cattails, eel grass, hydrilla, or lily pads in the same area will hold the better sized fish. 4 ORLANDO

Lakeside Bait and Tackle in Tavares near the Buzzard Beach boat ramp is selling a ton of minnows and says that the crappies are really starting to show up both in numbers and size on Lake Dora, in Lake Eustis and Lake Griffin. Anglers are catching them on Ron’s Zip Jigs, Roadrunners (small jig with a spinner) and minnows floated at various depths drifted under a cork. Look for female crappies to move up in the shallows on the next new and full moon phases in January and February. If you are going to fish for crappie be sure to get registered and enter your fish in the 10th Annual Shad and Crappie Derby. Lakeside Bait and Tackle plus Noble’s Marine are both sign-up locations - it only takes one fish to win! Take a kid fishing in 2019 and make future lifelong memories.

Trophy-sized largemouth bass, limits of crappie, and the shad run will keep anglers busy this January in Central Florida. Water levels have dropped, and the water flow has slowed. Fishing is best when you can, but working around the cold fronts will produce best catches. Don’t forget to sign up for the Shad and Crappie Derby, it only takes one fish to win! Bass – male fish have begun to seek bedding areas. The early spawners will have the beds prepped by the end of the month. Concentrate efforts near bedding areas, often larger female fish will be within 50 feet of the beds, usually lurking around nearby structure. Lizards and crawfish eat the eggs. Artificial lures that work well are blue/black soft plastic worms, jigs with creature baits, and soft plastic lizards. Practice catch and release on the big female bass to

Crappie – Full and new moons will see spawning activity – specks bed in colonies. Males prep beds in shallow while larger females will stage in 6-10 feet of water where drop-offs are close to the shore of the lake. January will see the river bends swell with staging females. Minnow tipped jigs tied 12 inches below a ¾ ounce egg sinker fished a foot above the bottom is sure to catch a stringer full. American and Hickory shad are here! Look for them between Mullet Lake Park and Lemon Bluff, and from the mouth of the Econlockhatchee River north to the mouth of Lake Harney. Shad darts and spoons work great. Match the lure size to the wild minnows. Longline troll a little faster than you would for specks, about 1.8 – 2.2 mph with plenty of line out so that the lure is near the bottom. While trolling for specks and shad last year in January, many anglers got into the sunshine bass catching fish up to 6 pounds. Light tackle fun for sure.

The American shad run on the upper St. Johns River has begun and should be swinging into full gear by mid-January. And if this year’s run is anything close to what we had last year, be on the lookout for Captain Tom and Three Quarter Time when you are passing through shad alley. During the peak of the run last year we scored some hundred fish days on both fly and spin and the run is great fun for experienced anglers and beginners alike. Also, if you enjoy a fresh fish dinner occasionally, the specked perch (crappie) bite has been and will continue to improve in all the big lakes, rivers and creeks in Central Florida. On the flats of Mosquito Lagoon and other non-tidal estuaries, falling temperatures and water levels set the stage for some of the best sight fishing experienced all

year. The water is shallow, and the fish are spooky, so a stealth presentation and long cast are critical. On colder days, target deeper locations where the water is a few degrees warmer and slow down your presentation. Some other warm water refuges are concrete structures that hold heat longer like seawalls, ramps and bridges, and deeper holes with black muck bottoms that absorb heat. As the day grows longer and the flats heat up, the feeding and tailing activity of redfish and black drum improve as the shallow water warms up faster. Another very important part of the equation is to match the hatch. Remember mullet are tropical fish which migrate south for the winter, so during the winter the primary forages on the lagoon switches from finfish to crustaceans like shrimp and crabs. When targeting redfish, black drum, and sea trout during the colder months, I like to downsize my bait, slow down my presentation, and fish with a shrimp or crab imitation baits like the D.O.A. Shrimp or Crab.

I hope everyone’s Christmas holiday and New Year was awesome and safe! Thank you to everyone who helped me out this past year. Without our fishing community being so friendly to one another all the time, fishing would be way more difficult. Part of doing well out here is knowing where they’re chewing and sometimes relying on the help from fellow captains. Thank You! I am asked to have these reports in a month ahead of time so it can be hard sometimes to give an accurate forecast almost two months away. If I have been off, I am sorry. I definitely try my best to go by what has been running, what should be running and what was running a year ago to come up with the best report I can. Besides the weather being the biggest factor in January, fishing is normally pretty good. The king run should continue to do well. This is

also the time the sails and wahoo get a little better. We don’t have the run that down south gets but it is normally decent if you can target them. I looked at my pictures from last year and I remembered we had a few good days of mahi too. Don’t forget grouper closes this month. Please be sure to follow up on all the regulations. I know it’s tough when they are constantly changing and normally the enforcers don’t know the rules themselves. If the wind allows you to at least fish the beach, you may come across sea trout, whiting and croakers to keep you and the kids occupied. Take advantage of the few good days we’re going to see and get out there and kill a few fish! I look forward to an awesome year and I hope you do too. The Seminole Junior Anglers midway point to the season has arrived and to say it ended in dominating fashion would be an understatement. On Saturday, December 1st, the anglers competed in the 8th Annual Bobby Lane Cup held at the Camp Mack River resort on the Kissimmee Chain of Lakes. This annual event has grown throughout its history and had the largest field to date, hosting 206 high school and junior teams from throughout the state and nation. The anglers did not let the large number of boats phase them and this was made apparent by three Seminole Junior Anglers Teams finishing in the top 5 of the field. Noah St. Pierre and Devin Been led the charge with a 2nd place finish, weighing in a limit of 18.68 lbs. Right on their heels with a 3rd place finish was the team of Justin Rosser and Austin Riggs, weighing in a total of 18.67lbs. And rounding out the top 5 was the team of Joey Bloom and Dylan Westhelle, weighing in a total of 15.58lbs. The organization also had another 3 teams finish in the top 30. Thank you to all of the captains who took the teams out, and the B.A.S.S. Nation volunteers for helping host another great event. The following day, December 2nd, the BASS Southern Regional Qualifier was hosted at Camp Mack River Resort. This event hosted 100 teams from throughout the state where the teams are vying for a qualifying birth to the National Championship. The anglers once again did not disappoint and were able to dominate the field once again. The team of Noah St. Pierre and Devin Been led the way once again, by taking home first place overall with a weight of 18.07lbs of fish. Taking 4th place overall was the team of Joey and Dylan with a limit weighing 15.89lbs. The Dimauro brothers of Bryce and Davis finished 12th overall and Zach Temperly and Mason Metcalf had a strong 14th place finish. That concluded a dominating weekend by these awesome high school anglers! Finally, as we prepare for the New Year, we are getting ready for our own big event of the season: the 3rd Annual St. John’s River Bash to be held on February 9th, 2019. The primary purpose of this event each year is to raise funds to help pay for entry fees and travel costs for away tournaments including the FLW High School World Finals held on Pickwick Lake, and B.A.S.S. Nation High School Nationals on Kentucky Lake. This is a great event each year with 2-person teams competing in the tournament followed by a weigh-in open to the public held at Boat Tree Marina. We will have raffle prizes and several local vendors setting up shop. Title tournament sponsors this year include returning sponsors Orlando Coastal Angler Magazine, Airport Chrysler Dodge Jeep, and KYSEK Coolers, and new sponsors AOK Networking, All Terrain Tractor Service Inc, and All American Excavating. Cold front, cold front, cold front one right after another, but there is a silver lining. With just a little patience, catching fish is the big payoff. After the fronts pass, the second or third days are the best days to fish as the winds usually have died down and temperatures have stabilized. Look to the potholes on the open flats, or darker bottoms to produce early in the morning. As the sun gets up higher in the morning sky the fishing activity will pick up. Redfish and spotted sea trout will feed in areas where the water temperatures are the warmest even a 1 to 2 degree temperature change can make a difference. If you do not have a temperature gauge you can go buy a pool thermometer, tie it on a string and help you find out the key ar-

eas to target. If you are fishing around islands or creek mouths, target the side that the sun raises on – this side will warm sooner and will hold fish. Remember to downsize your bait and fish them a lot slower than normal in most cases depending on temperatures. There is no such thing as too slow. Use a little patience and wait for the flats to warm up then catch ‘em up. Food forage for the predators has now changed from mullet and small baitfish to shrimp and crabs. Winter feeding habits are now past the transition phase. Recommended baits are DOA Shrimp, DOA Crabs, and Johnson gold spoons. Quarter ounce jig heads with small soft plastics will still work, as will topwater lures – remember slow retrieve for more bites. Stay warm, dress in layers, and remember to hydrate - with low humidity your body needs water.

January can be a tough month for Central Florida anglers, but those with kayaks gain the advantage. With the east coast lagoons’ water levels low, and the ability to “launch quickly” when the conditions look just right, the kayak crowd will get plenty of chances to score fish that the boat crowd can’t. The winter sight fishing season is here. Your two main targets will be the redfish (reds) and black drum (drum) that invade the Indian River, Banana River, and Mosquito Lagoon flats. All of these bodies of water are different, but the redfish and black drum inhabiting the flats share the same needs and comforts. Due to the cooler water, metabolisms have slowed. Couple that with the lack of “bait” fish, and you have reds and drum keying in on shrimp, crabs, marine worms, clams, and snails as their main food source. The days that see sunny skies and calm winds will give you the best chance at some hot fishing action but be sure to have a good pair of polarized sunglasses and hit the waters from 10am to 4pm. For the best sight fishing move excruciatingly slow and be prepared to cast at fish that are less than a rod length from you. The black drum is very interesting fish with poor eyesight, and a mouth designed for foraging the bottom. Its primary foods are shrimp, crab, marine worms, and snails that drum feed by scent and small movements detected by sensitive chin barbells (soft whiskers). Black drum of 10 pounds or less will have vertical black and white stripes resembling those of a Sheepshead. However, larger individuals will have black to brassy coloring that fades to light on the bottom. They can be seen slowly cruising, “laid-up” stationary, or tailing as they root around the bottom for a snack. Drum are typically found on the lagoon flats (1-3 ft.) in the cooler winter months then move deeper around bridges in the summer months. Typical river tackle will manage most Space Coast drum, but heavier tackle may be needed for bruisers that can top 50 lbs. Due to the drum’s poor vision, 3 ft. leaders of 30-40 lb. test will work well. Natural baits, like the quartered blue crab, fresh shrimp, or fresh clams can be used with a 3/0-5/0 circle hook and a few split-shot weights to get the line down. “Dead stick” (sit motionless) these baits in a likely area or where you see tails. Actively sight fish black drum with a live shrimp and a 1/8 oz. jig head threaded in the tail, be sure to pull the flapper fins! For artificial, an 1/8 oz. jig head with a Slayer Inc. SSB (molting) or Gulp shrimp in natural, glow, and molting can be slowly worked across the bottom. Larger black drum tends to be found on the bars and edges of flats with a relatively quick drop from 1-3 ft. that the Indian River, Banana River, Mosquito Lagoon have in abundance. Smaller drum prefers flats 1 ft. or less and are commonly found with redfish. Fish all black drum slowly as they are not used to their food moving fast or far.

Surprising Winter is the Best Planting Time

I am often asked when is the best time to plant fruiting plants. My answer is usually the same; the best time is 20 years ago or today. The second best time to plant is during the winter months. Plants are dormant, and can be easily shipped and planted with no stress on the plant because there is not a lot of maintenance once the plant or tree has been planted. Simply dig a good hole, water thoroughly

at planting, and take the rest of the winter off. Even though there are no signs of growth above ground, the root systems will have time to get adjusted to their new location and begin to initiate new root growth. There are plenty of advantages of growing your own edibles. First of all, you know what has been done over the course of the growing season from a chemical stand point. Second, the fruit just taste

better coming out of your home orchard versus buying fruit from the grocers that have little to no flavors. Thirdly, it is good for your soul and you will feel more connected to the environment and nature. Whether it is an apple tree, muscadine vine or a blueberry bush; now is the time to plant.
