O
ne of the best places to consistently find fish in the Indian River Lagoon and St. Lucie River is the bridges. Bridges are ideal places for concentrations of fish and usually have the largest snook and tarpon hanging around. The water is deeper, there are ambush points around the bridge abutments, water is funneled through small areas, and baitfish are concentrated there. You need to have current and know the tides. As long as the water’s moving, the action will be better. You need to know the water depth and structures and fish the shadow lines. Bridges are also some of the top night fishing spots, and shadow lines result from the lights over the bridge. Fishing under bridges is easy because you can fish from the shore, wade or fish from a boat. Every way works. There are different techniques for bridge fishing. I use different lures, the main ones are topwaters, Yo-Zuri crankbaits, CAL jigs with a 4” paddletail, and TerrorEyz. With the CAL jigs and TerrorEyz, you want to cast to the abut-
ments and let the jig fall near the bottom and jerk it up. I like the 4” Yo-Zuri minnow crankbaits, which you crank down and then use as a jerkbait. I use 6- to 8-lb. white braid with a 2-foot, clear, 20-lb. leader. If you’re fishing for big fish, you might want to bump it up to 20-lb. braid with 40-lb. leader. A great technique for giant snook is using heavy 1- to 2-oz. Redtail Hawk jigs at night. Fishing at night is awesome, and it’s cool in the summer. St. Lucie River Bridges The three top St. Lucie River bridges are Roosevelt Bridge, Palm City Bridge, Evans Crary Bridge (Sewall’s Point Bridge or Ten Cent Bridge). The Roosevelt Bridge is known for giant snook and the monsters of the deep—Goliath grouper. Fish the south end of the bridge, which gets very shallow around the concrete abutments the farther south you go. The seawall around the marina is also good, and the seawall that stretches under the railroad bridge is excellent. I’ve caught many snook in that area using topwater lures. Both the Palm City Bridge and the Ten-Cent Bridge can be excellent. I like the south side of the Ten-Cent around the large abutments. That’s one of local legend Jim Harter’s favorite spots. Stuart Bridges The north bridge (Jensen Bridge) is awesome and can be waded around as well as fished under from the shore or from a boat. I like fishing under the east section on the north side. Recently, I caught 10 jacks, three mangrove snapper, a mackerel and a snook there in about an hour around 10 a.m. using a 4” Yo-Zuki minnow. The south Stuart bridge is my favorite. I like wading the sandy shallow area on the north side and fishing under the east span. Recently I caught eight snook there on an evening-night trip. n the November edition of Coastal Angler Magazine, I highlighted the stories of boaters who have been victimized by a handful of maritime salvage and towing companies. While it’s been my experience that most of these kinds of companies operate with a high level of professional integrity, some of them resort to predatory practices to rake in substantial fees for so-called “salvage claims.” In one boater’s story, the salvage claim bill was more than $30,000 for minor assistance that took less than five minutes. And this was no fly-by-night operator making this outlandish charge, it was a popular national company. Now two Florida lawmakers from the Tampa Bay area have taken a strong interest in this issue, and they recently filed legislation (Senate Bill 664 and House Bill 469) that would require all maritime salvage and towing companies to provide a written estimate to boaters. This is clearly a common-sense idea that should sail through the Florida Legislature. After all, when you bring your car to a mechanic, Florida law requires that you receive an estimate about what it will cost. It’s hard to argue that boaters on the water shouldn’t have those same consumer protections. The legislators who are being such good friends to boaters are State Senator Dana Young and State Representative Shawn Harrison. Their legislation would require that whenever the cost of a service could exceed $500, the salvor must provide a written estimate that discloses the cost to the boater. Boaters love the freedom of the open water, and it’s important that everyone understand that the legislation does not implement some new over-aggressive government regulation. The proposal does not in any way regulate what these companies may charge or force them to provide services they don’t want to. Thanks to a very simple half-page form, it will make sure boaters can have the costs disclosed up front, so they can make an informed decision. We’ve all heard the joke that “a boat is a hole in the water into which you pour money.” The truth is, boaters love the water and have made a thoughtful, informed choice to devote some of their resources to this joyous pursuit. They shouldn’t be victimized by those who would take even more of their money for no good reason. The proposed legislation will put an end to some unwelcome practices, and boaters throughout Florida should do what they can to see that this proposal becomes law.

Black crappie, sunshine bass, largemouth bass, and American shad will be the mainstay targets in the St. Johns River in December. With water levels lowered since Hurricane Irma, angler access won’t be a problem – grab your gear and go fishing! Both Largemouth and Sunshine bass will be found early mornings at the mouths of Lake Harney and Lake Monroe where the river enters and exits. Throw a shad imitation like a Rattle Trap with chrome sides or a Spook Jr. in bone color. Early bedding largemouths can be found in 1-4 feet of water, depending on water levels – look for areas of sandy bottom near eel grass. Birds diving on passing bait schools means there are fish predators feeding. Topwater bites can be ferocious. Waiting for the line to come tight before setting the hook is the trick to topwater hookups.
December starts the usual bedding process as the bass all over the Harris Chain will begin to answer Mother Nature’s call. The cold fronts are arriving right on schedule, coming every 7 to 10 days. The bass have been biting fast moving baits. Try lipless crankbaits or chatter baits worked near the outside edges of the Kissimmee grass, along the eel grass edges or lilly pad fields. Both Lake Harris and Eustis have been hot lately. The mouths of the creeks, canals and around the entries to bays or pockets are all good places all over the chain, especially the areas close to deeper water. When the fronts come the fish will move to the closest deeper and warmer water until the weather stabilizes. Some of the best days will be 2 or 3 days after the fronts when the water is warming during a Full or New moon phase. The top water bite has been good also since the water temps have dropped. If you see birds active in an area look for the bait on your graph. The schoolers will only get better as the bait balls 2 ORLANDO

Central Florida Shad and Crappie Derby is in full swing. The shad should show up around Christmas. Until then, you can locate crappies all throughout the St. Johns. Minnows under a cork is the most popular way to catch these tasty fish. Many folks will use a jig under the same cork with their favorite colored plastic curly tail. Professional anglers always tip their jigs with a minnow – longline trolling, spider rigging, dipping lily pads, shooting docks – they always tip with live minnows. Hot baits this year: Roadrunner 1-16th ounce pro-series jig head tipped with a live minnow, Ron’s Zip Jigs, Crappie Psychic Crappie Trailers, and Jiffy Jigs with mylar tails. Vary your colors and let the fish tell you which colors they like that day. Good colors to start out with: chartreuse, orange, blue/white, red/white, pink, dark green. Once a pattern develops, switch to the color or bait style they prefer.
Lake Okeechobee has been fishing well with some areas producing more activity than others. Areas such as the north shoal which consist of the northern part of Observation Island area on up to Turners Cove; some parts of the Monkey box, Dupree bar, Harney pond area and Point of Horse Island. These areas have been producing crappie and bass both. Typically, these areas are places to look at when the first wave of spawners comes in. Crappie anglers have been trolling the edge of the Harney pond canal drifting or slow trolling with live-minnows. Other areas have been around the islands located close to Dupree bar and certain Derby Entries go here: https:// grass edges located to Sportsman’s canal. group up in the deeper chillier water. The Crappie bite has been going all over the chain as well. Naked minnows under a cork or bobber is still is a technique that produces especially in swallow water to keep your offering in the strike zone longer. Move to the swallow grass or pads as the moon phases change, the males will be a few days ahead of the fat females. If you hit them on the right days, you can have a blast as well as some of the year’s best eating table fare!
Winter is here as all of the migrating birds have arrived. In the month of November, the Kissimmee Chain of Lakes was at high pool stage due the hurricane rain. The state of Florida has been spraying and removing unwanted vegetation in shallow water spawning areas. I can’t wait to see the result. Most of the water ran south to Lake Okeechobee. During that time the fish were stacked in the flow at the entrances of the canals. Now the water is stable, and the bass are going into spawn mode. The best place to fish will be in the Kissimmee grass. The males have been moving into shallow, sandy areas to compete for spawning ground. This time of year, the bass are feeding heavily to gain weight to prepare
certain areas of the grass edges. Bass fishing has been good but still not an all-day consist bite. The bite has been good first thing in the morning then dies down a bit then picks back up etc. Mid to late afternoon you can expect to see some schooling activity which most times you can throw what you have in your hand to catch them and typically they have been ranging from the 1lb. to 5lb. range offering some exciting fishing. Lures that have been producing bites are: middle-running depth crank baits/spinner baits; senkos/worms; swim baits/jigs and flipping/pitching concentrating on the more condensed/thicker areas. for spawning. The bait of choice will be plastic baits, flukes, trick worm and vibe worms. The best colors to use are watermelon seed, watermelon red and June bug. Another good location for catching big bass will be in open water in the hydrilla patches. Bait of choice will be rattle traps, chrome with blue back. Goblets cove is full of hydrilla. Hard to navigate thru, but should hold some really big bass. Crappie - The crappies are still in open water and will remain there until the end of December. Best methods for catching crappie this time of the year will be controlling multiple rods with jig heads tipped with minnows. If you cannot find the crappie in open water, move to the outside edge of the Kissimmee grass where females stage while males prep beds.

Water levels on both the Lagoon and the St Johns River remain high, but as we move into winter these levels should begin to drop quickly. December on the lagoon coast marks a transitional period influenced greatly by changing water temperatures resulting from shorter days and passing cold fronts. The strength and duration of passing fronts are unpredictable, but both these factors determine changes in water temperature, the number of fishable day between fronts, and fishing tactics. Both redfish and sea trout will remain in the skinny water if the water temperatures stay in the 70-degree range. Fish in protected areas on windy days, sunny spots where the water is warmer, and look for fish to be holding in sand pockets (potholes) until the sun gets overhead. In the fall the water levels begin to drop and clear up making
winter one of the best times to sight fish the shallow flats, but when venturing into the skinny water, respect the limits of your boat. These extremely skinny waters hold fish, but it is best to hire a guide who specializes in backwater fishing, and save the wear and tear on your boat and the grass flats if you are not familiar with the area. Also remember during this transition, both redfish and sea trout switch from feeding on finfish to crab, shrimp and other forge, so watch for tailing fish rooting in the shallow grass flats. December is also the month to start thinking about American shad and speckled perch (crappie). As the water cools, the speckled perch will begin to stage along the deeper edges adjacent to shallow spawning areas. When the moon is full, and the water temperature is right, 52-60 degrees, the specks will move up into the creeks and shallows and spawn. Try fishing small jigs tipped with a live minnow or minnows under a cork for best results. Lastly, look for the American shad to begin showing up around Christmas, with their spawning run lasting through February.
Moderate temperatures should bring some great fishing to the Lagoon this month. The ultra-high water levels after the hurricane have finally receded and things are getting back to normal. Clear shallow water means sight fishing for redfish, trout, and black drum. With the moderate temperatures, however, will come plenty of wind, usually blowing right down the center of the Lagoon leaving few places to hide in the central and southern parts. The maze of islands starting at Georges Bar and going north offer plenty of protection during the winter winds as well as some great fishing for redfish and big trout. Many of these islands will have a slightly deeper sandy trough along their shore which is a great place to find both species.

My three favorite winter lures are the DOA Shrimp, the 3” DOA Shad Tail on a jighead, and the 5.5” CAL rigged weedless. The latter is great for making long blind casts to sandy holes for large seatrout. The shrimp I use for sight fishing redfish and trout on calm sunny days. The shad tail can be rigged on jigheads of various weights from 1/16 to 1/4 ounce depending on the wind and water depth. The shad tail is also my go to lure when casting at winter schooling redfish. Color choice is not nearly important as casting accuracy. Various shades of green, gold, or brown are my usual choices. Should you encounter a school of what seem to be redfish but they are just not biting the usual lures, look closer, it may be a school of black drum. They will eat a lure and fly on occasion but more often than not, they will completely ignore them. Live or dead shrimp on the bottom will get their attention as will pieces of crab.
January and February (5-7 inches). Last season Hurricane Matthew reduced our Volusia shrimp run by killing off a generation of size when it ran over Mosquito Lagoon. We may just have an epic season in Volusia County in 2018. Reports at Railroad Bridge are not encouraging for winter shrimp but that can change in a moment. The fact that shrimpers are scouting and dipping shrimp so early in November could be a sign we will have an epic season. Does this mean we are going to see the 200-boat weekend brigade again in Volusia? No big deal if we do there is plenty of shrimp to fill freezers for everyone. Dirty water is going to be the biggest problem to overcome this season. Warm water bait fish blacking out the lights are going to be the 2nd problem. In October, Seminole Junior Anglers partnered with Mud Hole Custom Tackle to host a rod building class for local high school anglers, and their friends and family. During the class, the anglers received either a casting or spinning MHX rod blank fit with a WINN fishing grip and step-by-step instructions how to build with the options to customize colors and style. For many anglers, this was their first time building their own rod, and some even bought a kit to take home to start building more rods in the future. Just a couple weeks later, the anglers continued their tournament schedule with the second B.A.S.S. Tournament of the year held on Lake Okeechobee. The Saturday event, the Florida High School B.A.S.S. Nation tournament, brought out over 95 teams from throughout the state of Florida. The day was characterized as a tough day on the lake for most of the teams fishing; however, the team of Daniel Magill and Ashton Schmitt managed to land a 6th place finish with 12.56lbs. Also in the top 25, Dylan Westhelle and Joey Bloom were able to salvage a solid 24th place finish. On Sunday, the weights were zeroed from the day before and anglers took part in The B.A.S.S. Florida Series event. This day brought better results for the entire field, including many of the teams from Seminole Junior Anglers. The team of Joey Bloom and Dylan Westhelle had another strong 8th place finish, weighing in 13.75 lbs. The team of Mason Metcalf and Zach Temperly were able to bring home a 14th place finish weighing in 12.1lbs. The teams are starting to gain momentum with these finishes and are holding strong in points for team of the year in both the Saturday and Sunday series. In the Saturday Series, the team of Dylan Westhelle and Joey Bloom hold the 10th spot, and Noah St. Pierre and Jacob Rosser hold 16th place. In the Sunday Series, Dylan Westhelle and Joey Bloom hold onto 2nd place in points and Mason Mectalf and Zach Temperly hold onto 7th place. The teams will continue their quest to qualify for the national tournament with the next event being held on The St. Johns River, February 3rd – 4th. The next tournament is the Bobby Lane Cup, held on Lake Kissimmee. This annual event brings in teams from across the southeast to compete for scholarship money, and bragging rights for the year. The anglers also have the opportunity to meet some of the biggest names in bass fishing that show up and support the event. This year’s event will be held December 2nd at Camp Mack River Resort.

During this time of the year, the flounder bite should be at its peak. Thanks to cooler water and air temperatures, large “door mat” sized flounder will be in search of an easy meal. Flounder are not very picky when it comes to feeding. They can be caught with a wide variety of natural or artificial baits such as bright colored jerk baits that typically have a paddle tail. Flounder will also aggressively feed on baits such as live mud minnows, live finger mullet, live or frozen shrimp, or cut bait. One of my favorite ways to catch them is on spinning gear which consists of a 7’ medium action spinning reel combo equipped with 20-pound test braided line and 15-pound test mono leader. Flounder are ambush predators that feed primarily by sight. When targeting them I prefer to periodically bump or jig the bait across the bottom to make it more visi-
Now is a good time to catch a few nice redfish and black drum. Baits such as live shrimp, cut baits (mullet or lady fish) scented jerk baits, or even gold spoons will receive plenty of action from a hungry redfish in search of an easy meal. Targeting Black Drum By Paul MacInnis Occasionally inspiration for an article comes from unexpected places. So is the case for this article. Roger Hampton and his construction crew were at my townhouse community for post Irma hurricane repairs. Like any wise angler, Hampton and his crew took advantage of our waterfront location to soak baits while they went about their work. Every afternoon I’d chat with Hampton, not about the restoration work, but about what they caught that day. There was of course catfish, an occasional seatrout or whiting, but the star was black drum. On their best day they caught 15 that ranged from 20 to 27 inches long. That got me thinking about black drum. I’ll admit, with seagrass dieoffs and other Indian River Lagoon woes, I’m not catching as many seatrout and redfish as I used to. But I am catching more black drum than ever. Maybe their population is expanding due to reduced competition from trout and reds. One look at a black drum (Pogonias cromis) with its chin barbels and underslung mouth and you can tell this fish feeds on the bottom. Although they are occasionally caught on cut bait, black drum feed primarily on mollusks and crabs. Shrimp, clams, crabs and sand fleas are popular drum baits in our local waters. My favorite is crab because they don’t tend to get eaten by catfish and aren’t as readily picked apart by bait stealers as the other baits. One blue crab can yield four baits; each claw and then cut the body in half for two more baits. I use a 4/0 to 6/0 Daiichi circle hook and run it through the elbow joint on the claws. For the body halves, I’ll insert the hook near the “point” at the corner of the shell. If you wiggle and pivot the hook back and forth you can “drill” the hook point through the shell. Just about every major bridge on the Indian River Lagoon has a population of black drum, and some of them are huge. There are a handful of specialists who target these fish, usually by soaking blue crabs on the bottom near pilings. This is a heavy tackle, locked down drag kind of game. Fights are short but intense; either you winch the fish to the boat or the fish gets back into the pilings and cuts you off. This type of fishing is usually better at night, but there are a few guides like Captain Tom Van Horn who successfully target bridge drum during daylight by cruising along the bridge with their side imaging sonar to spot fish for their clients to cast to. 8 ORLANDO

My favorite place to target drum is on the flats where they can be sight fished just like redfish. A live or dead shrimp or chunk of crab cast into their path is likely to get eaten, but the real fun is trying to catch black drum on lures. Drum aren’t the easiest fish to fool on artificials, but I can offer a few tips that should help your success. First, you lure needs to be on the bottom. It is extremely rare to have a drum rise up in the water column so you should use flies, jigs, plastic shrimp or crab imitations with enough weight to get to the bottom quick. Second, use dark colors. Black is my favorite but dark brown or root beer also work. Drum occasionally strike lighter colors, but most of the time black or root beer will out fish lighter colors ten to one. My third tip is to put your lure right on the drum’s nose. A black drum won’t chase down your lure so you have to present it right in front of the fish. I like to imagine a circle about the size of a dinner plate in front of the drum’s nose and then try to drop my offering in that circle. Once I get a lure in front of a black drum I like to twitch it slowly, keeping it on the bottom and in the drum’s line of sight. Hits can be subtle and sometimes are hard to see and feel. If you think you’ve been bit, slowly come tight and be ready to set the hook if you feel weight. Black drum on the flats tend to run from a few pounds on up to about 30 pounds. The same tackle you use for redfish will work for black drum. I personally use a seven-foot spinning rod with a 3000-size reel loaded with ten-pound test braid. I add about two feet of 20-pound mono or fluorocarbon leader, not so much because drum are line shy, but to give me something to grab when trying to land a fish. For fly fishing I prefer a seven-weight fly rod although most folks opt for a nine-weight for throwing heavy flies and for a little extra backbone when pulling on fish that may top 20 pounds. Although you want to present your fly on the bottom, floating line works fine because fly fishing for drum is a shallow water game. Weighted black flies that get to the bottom quickly are best with my favorite patterns being the Redfish Worm, Merkin and Clouser Minnow (http://www. spottedtail.com/blog/mosquito-lagoon-florida-fly-fishing-tip-littleblack-flies/). If you want to keep a black drum for the table, the limit is five fish per day between 14 and 24 inches long, with one allowed over 24 inches.

As the school semester draws to a close, the UCF Reel Knights look back at great success and look forward to the next exciting semester. The UCF Reel Knights had great successes in hosting the Inshore Tournament and Bass Bankhopper. Team members Mitch, Taylor, and Matt won the inshore tournament winning the grand prize of $1200 and other rewards. The UCF Football team has been setting many records and was ranked for much of the season, better than the university has ever done. Some club members are even making the journey to UCF’s bowl game. The club also reached over 150 members this semester and is constantly growing. Looking forward to next semester, the Reel Knights have a variety of events approaching. Another Inshore Tournament for redfish and trout is scheduled, as well as the Bass Bankhopper tournaments. The club is also going on a camping trip to the St. Johns, a great hit last year in the cool weather. Dates for these events will be announced on the club’s website: ucffishingclub. weebly.com. Over the past few months, club members have taken advantage of the cold fronts, each time going out to Mosquito Lagoon and getting into a mess of gator trout. The winter winds will always provide their problems and the newbies to the lagoon will have to adapt. Most ramps have reopened from damage because of Hurricane Irma. A December kayak fishing forecast could take on many forms here in Central Florida. We could easily talk of cooling temperatures effect on feeding patterns, hot products that should be on every Christmas wish list, or what to expect for 2018. I could tell you how reputable safe kayak fishing guides are easy to find and most offer gift certificates that make awesome presents. A recap of 2017 could even be in order and well received. However, this year I feel something a little different is a good direction. A gift from me to you, so to speak. One of my most coveted secrets and frequently asked questions, “Where is a good spot to fish today/next week/whenever?” It seems like such an easy and innocent question. Many times, it is that easy and the info will flow forth, to a certain degree. Don’t expect a personal message loaded with pin drops on a map complete with instructions on where to cast if you pose this question to any social media groups. More often than not you’ll be met with joking remarks. Should people be willing to spill their guts to anyone giving hard earned knowledge? I do it daily as a guide, but you still won’t get a pin drop. I will typically fill anyone in on the bite and what I’m finding in a general area. So how does someone go about finding that perfect spot with consistent action. It’s simple actually. There are decades of information on any given species that you could ever want to target. Information including tackle, habitat, and feeding preferences is all for free in an instant at the tips of your fingers. Also, we have the ability to scour over satellite photos that are in my eyes the key to better angling on the lagoons and shallow waters of both coasts. By taking knowledge gained from information collected in real time and what you’ve learned about a species. You can branch out and explore areas that fit your criteria. Does a certain shoreline lite up on an incoming tide but weekend pressure is too much? Bring up that google maps and find its twin, or several. I almost bet you find a like scenario with fish happy to feed. Does that one section of flat in the IRL where it goes from a foot of water to six feet in a tree lined canal always produce some heavy trout. Find its twin and have fun! After all the idea of these plastic boats is their versatility and willingness to go anywhere. So, put that phone to good use - A little work can go a long way for getting your fishing pole bent.

A
s a professional angler and guide for 30 years, there’s something I’ve noticed about the mechanics of bass fishing that differentiates a pro from most amateurs. As soon it hits the water, a pro is in control of the lure. A common mistake I see while fishing with novice anglers is control. They cast their lure, they let it free fall, and as soon as it hits the grass it hangs up… a wasted cast. In most situations where I do most of my fishing, on Lake Okeechobee, the lure should be working the instant it hits the water. A pro casts his lure, and as soon as it hits the water the reel is engaged, the rod is up and the lure is working efficiently all the way back to the boat. Learn how to cast and engage the lure with your rod up; this is very important. I see so many anglers with their rod pointing at their lure on the retrieve. Generally, if your rod is pointing at the lure, bad things can happen. You are not in control, and you can actually keep a fish from getting the lure. A big bass usually sucks a lure in from a distance. If you don’t have your rod up, you can keep the lure from reaching the fish. The action of your rod will let the lure go to the fish, and you will hook them deeper in their mouths. When you are fishing moving lures like crankbaits and spinnerbaits, you need a rod that has a softer tip for this reason. If you are using a stiff rod and braided line that has no stretch, when that big bass hits your lure you will feel the bite but you will keep the fish from getting it. Many years ago, Gary Cline—one of the best anglers ever—realized that when graphite rods came on the scene back in the 70s that he was losing a lot more fish than when he used the softer glass rods. He went back to the soft-tip glass rods for all his moving baits, and it made a big difference. Since then, rod companies have made graphite rods with softer tips. I remember a tournament in Texas many years ago. I was casting a Shad Rap on my glass rod, and my partner was fishing the same lure on his new graphite rod. All the fish he caught were on the back hook, while every bass I caught had the whole lure deep in their mouths. This taught us a lot about how the action of a rod can help you catch more fish. Bottom line is: when you make a cast, engage the reel as soon as the lure hits the water and hold your rod up to feel the lure. This tip will help you catch more fish and make you a better angler. oat Owners Association of The United States (BoatUS) has estimated that more than 63,000 recreational boats were damaged or destroyed as a result of both Hurricane Harvey and Hurricane Irma, with a combined dollar damage estimate of $655 million to boats alone. These numbers are strikingly close to 2012’s Hurricane Sandy, which remains the single-largest industry loss with more than 65,000 boats damaged and more than $650 million in estimated losses. Breaking down the 2017 season storms, Hurricane Irma damaged or destroyed 50,000 vessels with approximately $500 million in recreational boat damage. About 13,500 boats were damaged or lost costing $155 million in boat damage as the result of Hurricane Harvey. “These two storms were as different as night and day,” said BoatUS Marine Insurance Program vice president of claims Rick Wilson. “The boats that were hit the hardest by Harvey were located on a relatively small slice of Texas coast, while we saw damage to recreational vessels from Irma in every corner of Florida. “While Hurricane Irma’s losses are significant, it could have been much worse,” added Wilson. “Irma ultimately traveled up Florida’s west coast and not the east, which was initially forecast. And while locations in the right front quadrant of the storm such as Big Pine Key and Marathon were hit hard with a Category 4 storm, Irma lost strength as it approached the mainland and swept up Florida. As the storm passed east of Tampa Bay, waters receded and came back gradually, also lessening surge damage.”
