Boaters and anglers up and down the east coast know there’s an important season between the holidays and spring: Boat Show Season! ottom fish anglers in the Atlantic from the coast of North Carolina south through the Florida Keys could soon be required to have Photo by Adrian Gray descending devices onboard and available for release of unwanted fish while fishing for snapper and grouper species. The South Atlantic Fishery Management Council approved the measure at its September meeting. If approved by NOAA Fisheries, the requirement will likely go into effect in late 2020. Additionally, the use of non-offset, non-stainless-steel circle hooks could be required. The new requirements are part of a package of “best practices” the council has been considering for the snapper and grouper fishery. It addresses the results of federal research that shows mortality rates of almost 30 and 40 percent for red snapper released by the recreational and commercial sectors, respectively. “The bottom line is that many important fish stocks are showing dead discard estimates that exceed catch (red snapper, black sea bass, gag and black grouper),” read a council meeting summary. “That means the data show that more fish are being released and dying than are able to be kept by fishermen.” The descending-device requirement is intended to increase chances of survival for released fish by decreasing the effects of barotrauma. MERRY CHRISTMAS By Mike Buss
H
’ere’s wishing all of you a very Merry Christmas with the hope all of your wishes for the coming year come true. This month I’d like to offer some suggestions to help make those dreams and wishes come true. All of us have had those Christmas Seasons where the fishing gifts we were hoping for turned out to be socks, ties and more socks! A good way to avoid the socks is to get on the mailing list of the major fishing company manufactures in addition to the mail order outfits like Cabelas, and Bass Pro. Within a few weeks you will begin receiving catalogs from all of these outfits. Then all you need to do is go through them circling the items you would like along with folding the corner of the page where they can be found. Leaving them around for all to see is also a good idea and if they don’t get that hint, mention that you have circled a number of items that would make good Christmas gifts. For those of you reading this who have a fisherman or fisherwoman in need of Christmas gifts here are a few suggestions. A gift card from Cabelas or Bass Pro is always a welcome gift. Most of the mail order catalogs also offer gift cards. I know some of you may think gift cards are rather impersonal, but they allow the person receiving it to pick out something they really want or may need. All people that fish seem to love gadgets and can’t seem to get enough of them. They can always find room for a new one. These could include nippers, clippers, knot tiers, fishing nets, and even a pair of water proof gloves. Some may need a new tackle box. Fly fishermen are even more enamored of stuff. Most wear a fly-fishing vest with what seems a hundred pockets to hold line leader material, fly boxes, spare spools, sun glasses, and any number of other stuff. All of these items wear out or get used up and need replacement and make very good Christmas gifts. Fly rods and reels also make very nice gifts, but a word of caution, please be sure to involve the gift recipient as these items are very personal and need to fit the fisherman. They should get a chance to cast with the rod before purchase to make sure it has the right “feel.” A log book also makes a great gift. Here your fisherman can log down all the important information about each trip he or she takes. If they fish in saltwater, this becomes very important as tidal conditions control most of the fishing and these tidal conditions repeat themselves. So if they have a log book, they can recreate their fishing success when conditions repeat themselves. A day on the water with a local guide is also a welcome gift, and if you really want to make an impression, schedule a date with a guide at an exotic location like the Bahamas or Key West. Fishermen and women are easy to shop for Christmas gifts, just ask them a few questions about what they might want or need. I hope this helps you find that “perfect” gift. Tiht Lines!

ecember is already here! This year has really flown by fast. Fishing this year has been great on the Outer Banks and hopefully when you are reading this column, we will still be catching some fish. Because it is the holiday season, many people are looking for ideas for the fishermen in their lives. There are so many gift ideas out there and I hopefully will give you some ideas with some of my recommendations. Every fisherman needs a great quality pair of sunglasses when they are out on the water. There are numerous brands to choose from. Some fishermen, like myself, have to have corrective lenses and there are several companies that specialize in prescription optics. I have used Salt Life Optics for the last seven years because they offer different colors and finishes. Their lenses are made by Ziess, a name that many sportsmen know from their high-quality binoculars and rifle scopes. Are you shopping for a serious fisherman that uses a multitude of different reels in targeting different species of fish? If the answer is yes, think about buying a line spooling machine so they can spool their own reels. No more waiting in line waiting for their reels to be stripped and respooled. This is not a cheap gift but if you have someone in your family that fishes a great deal, think about this as a gift that will last them a lifetime. Another idea is an item I discovered this year. It is the Rod-Runner Fishing Rod Carrier. This item allows you to carry up to five rods in a convenient manner. The Rod-Runner is made from a durable plastic that is lightweight and you can use this to transport your rods and reels to the beach, pier, or the boat. The Rod-Runner also helps protect your rods because you will not be hitting your rods against each other. If you are unsure what to buy, don’t worry because I have the perfect gift for you to give. Buy your fisherman a gift certificate from a local tackle shop. Some people think that gift certificates are impersonal, but I can tell you they are far from it. It allows the person the freedom to choose their own gift and get what they really need. Believe me, they will appreciate it. I always welcome a gift certificate and I can assure you that anyone who fishes will love it also. One last idea is to give the gift of a membership in a fishing organization. There are numerous fishing organizations in the OBX and southeastern Virginia that you could give the gift of membership to. If they are already in an organization, check with the club and see if they offer a lifetime membership. Clubs are a great way to learn new ideas and network with other fishermen who share the passion of fishing. I wish each and every one a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving. Now it’s time to roll off that couch and roll some 3/4 ounce jigs under some bridge pilings. Chartreuse or white are perennial winners for duping some nice schoolie rockfish. Tapping those jigs along the bottom when there is a little bit of current will fool em. These 18-24 inch fish put smiles on young and old alike. We also catch them on rattletraps, Mann’s stretches, and fuzzy Hubert’s. Mr Basnight makes a rockfish lure that just gets em over at the Mann’s Harbor bridge. Go by his shop and score some good jigs and a few good stories as well. Other saltwater fish inshore could be red drum and speckled trout just depends on how cold the water gets. The farther south you go the warmer the waters are and more likely to encounter these guys. Black sea bass season is still open thru the month, so maybe you can stuff your cooler with some tasty sea bass. You can also stuff your tackle box with some meat hog sea bass jigs in white. Offshore, yellowfin should be out there ready to smash your blue-n-white sea witch with a ballyhoo. There are some great captains and boats here for you if you feel like that is a bit too far for your boat to go. I hope everyone has a Merry Christmas and or holidays. What Your Boat Wants for the Holidays

If your boat could talk, what would it say? What would it want for a holiday gift? Here are some suggestions:
6. New Steering System: An upgrade from cable to a hydraulic system will make a day on the water much easier, with far less effort to steer your boat in any conditions. If you already have hydraulic, consider a power hydraulic system for even easier effort.
1. Trailer repairs and upgrades. Everyone lavishes love on the boat and engine, but most trailers suffer in silence—that is, until a wheel bearing goes, a tire pops, or a bunk falls off! It might be time for a new axle, a new set of rims and tires (buy the cool aluminum wheels, you’ll be amazed at the look it gives your rig), a new winch, a set of LED lights, or a new set of bunks with new carpet. A new tongue jack and coupler could make hooking up your rig much easier. If your trailer’s beyond repair, a new one will cradle your boat with love.
7. New VHF Radio: Your VHF might be due for an upgrade. New units are not that expensive, and if you ever really need it, you’ll be thankful you bought new.
2. Gelcoat detailing: Most boats, even those cared for, could use a detail job. Have a pro (or you, if you’re good at it) spend a day or so wet-sanding out scratches, buffing the deck and hull sides, and polishing the hardware. When you’re ready for next spring’s fishing, your boat will look proud. 3. Helm Upgrade: Old gauges become faded after years in the sun. Replacing them with new gauges and switches will brighten your boat’s dash and monitor performance more accurately. 4. New Graph/Fishfinder: These are an investment well worth it, as they’ll help you get to the fish faster and easier. 5. New Propeller(s): If your prop’s not quite right for your hull, go test a handful on a dull day and buy the right one for your rig. Using the right prop is typically worth a few hundred a year in fuel savings, so it’s a worthwhile purchase (at least that’s how you can justify it!).

8. New Stereo: When the fishin’s slow or you’re just cruising with your family, good music is a nice thing to have. A new system with marine speakers, subwoofer and IPod-compatible head unit looks great and sounds even better. 9. Add An Accessory: Even the little things can make a big difference. A new anchor with coated chain and line, a new set of pop-up cleats, a new GPS speedometer, a 12-volt outlet, a new steering wheel mounted power trim switch, or a foot throttle for better control—these are all under $500 and great upgrades for any boater. 10. How about splurging? A new engine would really light your boat’s fire; your tired old outboard has seen better days, so how cool would it be to bolt on a new one with more power, a better idle, and improved fuel economy? CHRISTMAS MALLARDS MUSSELS from our friend Chef Johnny Mo from the Eastern Shore! Chef Johnny Mo of Mallards has become something of a legend here on the Eastern Shore and known as the guitar pickin cookin restaurateur. JBOTV filmed in Onancock recently and Johnny fixed us up some of the best mussels we have ever had. I ask him if we could feature the recipe in our Christmas column so here it is! Serves 2-4 Ingredients: 1lb Canadian Mussels 1 T olive oil 1 T butter 1 tomato diced 1 T garlic minced 4-5 slices jalapeño pepper 1 T Johnny Mo herb blend #1 1 c white wine Salt and pepper Method: Heat oil & butter in sauté pan on high. Add tomatoes, garlic, jalapeños, butter, and Johnny Mo’s herb blend #1. Sauté to brown garlic. Add mussels and wine, cover and boil until mussels open, about 10 minutes. Season with salt and pepper, serve with some crusty bread. Also stick some chives in a lemon ring to really make this pop! Enjoy! Fish Tales & Other Exaggerations

hristmas was always a special time at the Shore. The sunsets were magical and the winds were strong. It was a time to reflect on the previous summer and its abundance of seafood. It seemed that our family judged the year, based upon the amount of seafood harvested and consumed. I can tell you that there was never a bad year. We did find over the years, that the clam and crab populations seemed to be reduced, thus requiring more time on the water. For me, this was not a negative thing. I so enjoyed fishing, crabbing and clamming and my time on the water. We talked and laughed about our boating experiences, looking forward to the coming holiday season, while watching the amazing sunsets. On land, our new home, the Red Ruin, was transforming into a home that didn’t look so much like a demolition project. We had a new deck and the red, pealing paint was covered by cedar shingles. Holes that were used by the east coast bird population were now gone. One of the unique things about the house was that it had blocks of wood on the corners that made it look like a log home. Well, not really and they were removed. The roof was transformed from a rain-catcher to a white asphalt impervious shield. We had a new heating unit that didn’t belch smoke on the hour. Life was good. As Christmas approached, my Mom began the process of planning and decorating. In the center of the great room was a large fireplace. The stone was some type of sedimentary rock, brown in color and massively ugly. Everyone that visited was asked what they thought we should do with the fireplace. Demolition was not an option. Some suggested covering it up with a wood façade. However, the consensus was that white paint would be a good first start. Then the question was, who was qualified to make this radical change to the major centerpiece of our great room? Monet, Picasso and Renoir had passed on to the studio in the sky. Larry, the house painter, had gone to Florida for the winter. The next candidate, the part time aluminum rowboat captain and favorite/only son, was the winner by default. This was not an easy task, as the stone absorbed the paint like water through gauze. On and on, I painted. Three coats later, there stood the large white monolith, just in time for Christmas. Mom fancied herself as an artist and decorator. I was dispatched to get some pine boughs. She had purchased a small, fake Christmas “tree.” There was an inset in the fireplace. The pine boughs were arranged and the “tree” was placed in the middle along with two red candles. Prior to the candles being placed on the fireplace, Mom lit them and sculpted them to her liking. The candles were not to ever be lit, again. This might ignite the dead pine and burn down the house, but more importantly, it might disturb the perfect wax ears that now adorned the candles. This was our tribute to Christmas and was very underwhelming. Pop was always a diplomat, especially when suggesting something to Mom. (Once again, a life’s lesson.) Pop said that he thought that
this was a unique, though small, celebration of the birth of Jesus. However, considering the size of the room, maybe we should get an actual tree. Mom said she would think about it, whilst enjoying her nightly Manhattan. After a couple of mind - freeing drinks, she had the answer. In the corner of the room, she had created a display of Phragmites. Yes, the reeds that clog up ditches and have taken over the coast. She said that she could hang ornaments on the invasive species display. This became the focus of our celebration of the season that year. Pop and I were more traditionalists when it came to Christmas Trees. We preferred the look and smell of an evergreen, however, neither of us wanted to insult Mom’s artistic expression. In future years, Pop and I just went to the tree stand and brought home a regular tree, never commenting on the past’s artistic interpretation. Mom’s creative juices were not to be denied, however. She began to create Christmas ornaments. I must say that these were, for the most part, beautiful. They continue to adorn our tree, even now. While Mom and Pop have passed, every Christmas I get to remember the wonderful and fun times we had decorating the tree. As we unwrapped each ball, we reviewed its beauty and looked for just the right place for it to be hung. Mom, of course, always had veto power on placement. These were times that I sometimes took for granted at the time, but long to relive today. Now, as I unwrap a ball, I get to remember those evenings of anticipation, excitement and hot chocolate. It seems funny that something as simple as a beaded Christmas ball, could transport me back 50 plus years to my childhood. I hope that you have an exceptional Holiday Season, create wonderful memories and never take family time for granted. So many memories, so little time.
