FISHING REPORT Venice by Big “O” Charters
I
t’s Christmas, duck hunting, deer hunting, hog hunting, all of these happen in December in South Plaquemines Parish. You might think with all of these activities that fishing would take a back seat. On the contrary, December is probably our best month for fishing. All of the above kind of takes the pressure off of our fin fish, and they are predictable and easy to catch. Behind Buras, watch the weather. Cold fronts will blow the water out of the marsh. The second day after a front pushes through is usually the best. The trout will be in their winter pattern. This means they will hide in the deep holes when it’s cold and come out on the adjacent flats to feed when the sun warms the water; that’s when I’ll be throwing my favorite imitation shrimp under a cork. Make sure your cork makes plenty of noise and be patient. Old “yellow” mouth will find you. If the shrimp doesn’t work, try an imitation minnow. Reds will be in the area, also, but closer to the bank. They like to hide along the grass lines and attack their prey from ambush. So give them an easy meal close to the grass. I like market bait under the same “noisy” cork. Redfish can smell and the smell of fresh shrimp will have him pulling your cork under. You’ll catch plenty of reds for the grill. Downriver will be gangbusters! The low River and
the cool weather has moved the trout into the River system. You can find them in the spillways, the passes, and the River herself. I like a “Gulp” minnow on a 3/8 or ½ once jig head bounced slowly on the bottom. Look for “humps” in the River in 15 to 25 feet of water and you’ll find the trout. If you run out of Gulp try an LSU cacahoe on the same jig. If you want flounder or reds then tip the LSU with a little piece of shrimp. The Bulls will be patrolling the rock jetties along the mouths of most of the main passes. A 3/8 jig with market bait is all that’s needed. Fish it slowly along the rocks and hold on. ecember fishing on the coast is much easier in today’s world of accurate marine weather forecasting. Look for the few calm days following a frontal passage and head down. Expect the water to be clear and redfish to be actively feeding during the warmest time of the day. Sight casting for redfish is a blast and you can find them on Fifi, Dutch and Mendicant Islands. If you take a boat ride north to Leeville or Golden Meadow you will find lots of redfish action in the ponds. Kayakers need only to drop in on the side of the LA 1 and start fishing! Trout will be found in the pits on the Gulf side of the road and they seem to bite best at daylight. You will find Grand Isle very relaxing and we are all thankful another year with no major storms. Chances are, if you have fished South Louisiana just a handful of times you’ve had a day on the water that exists only in the imaginations of fishermen from any other part of the country. If you’ve duck hunted down the Mississippi River or west towards Pecan Island and the Chenier Plain marshes, you’ve likely had what many out-of-state waterfowlers would consider once-in-a-lifetime experiences. As much time as I’ve spent on the water in the last four decades in this state and as many fish as I’ve been able to catch, I still get fascinated each and every time I get the chance to see a marsh sunrise and explore the seemingly endless stretches of marshes and swamps that are part of our home. While every day on the water is special, there are certainly some that stand out as truly memorable experiences. In late October and early November this year, I had two of those memorable, unique days. The first was an incredible bass fishing day near Chef Pass that happened, in part, by accident. A friend and I launched his boat at The Rigolets just outside of Slidell and made a quick stop to catch some trout on jerk baits along the grass beds on the north end of Lake Catherine. The trout were there, but they weren’t all that interested in eating so we decided to head to the marsh near the MRGO to hit some ponds for redfish and bass. As we turned into the Intracoastal from St Catherine Pass, we noticed the gas tank was only about a quarter full and we weren’t going to make it to our intended destination and back. So, we decided to find some new fishing holes. We ducked into a half dozen cuts and ponds right off the Intracoastal until we wandered into a set of narrow, snaking unnamed bayous lined with grass beds. The water was crystal clear. Largemouth bass were cruising the edges of the grass chasing finger mullet and shrimp and we sight fished bass for three hours, catching more than 20 beautiful, healthy, fat, crab and shrimp-fed marsh bass. And we seemingly had the marsh to ourselves. A couple of weeks later, I joined Captain Todd Seither at Cajun Fishing Adventures in Buras for a speckled trout and redfish trip that was extraordinary even by South Louisiana standards. A quick stop in Quarantine Bay produced 50 speckled trout in less than an hour for me, Todd and our guests Jared Mott from the Isaac Walton League and Gene Gilliland, conservation director for B.A.S.S. The trout were chasing white

shrimp being pushed from the marsh by water spilling through cuts along the Mississippi River and a hard falling tide. Shrimp skipped across the water’s surface all around the boat and corks disappeared immediately after hitting the water on just about every cast. Figuring we had enough trout for a good fish fry, we moved just a mile toward Black Bay and found bull redfish crashing the surface, often jumping out of the water after pogies. Hand-sized pogies exploded from the bay by the hundreds of thousands, chased from the water by hungry, hard-charging redfish that boiled the surface. Sea gulls and pelicans hovered and picked at pogies as far as we could see north, south and east. For three hours we battled 15-40 pound redfish. I caught 15 of them on a topwater bait, hoping at times I could just get another boil and blow up without the hooks finding the fish’s mouth so I could let my left arm rest for a few minutes. Memorable days on the water like these and so many others should be an opportunity for all of us who fish this incredible estuary to stop and give thanks for just how fortunate we are. Louisiana’s coast, built and recharged by the Mississippi River, is frankly the best coastal fishery in North America. There is nowhere else that shares the same productivity, diversity of fish and wildlife and opportunity. It should also be a reminder of how much we stand to lose if our coastal restoration efforts fail and we aren’t successful in returning our sediment and water resources to this estuary and how important it is for all of us to be vigilant in ensuring our elected and appointed officials wisely invest in the future of this coast. FISHING REPORT Venice Offshore I
T
he past two months have been awesome offshore. We have been fishing the shrimp boats with very good results most days. There is nothing like hand feeding 150 plus pound Yellowfin Tuna right next to the boat. This year has been a bit late in almost every aspect of offshore fishing. Chances are we will have an exceptional December fishery. The Wahoo bite should be in full swing this December. The most intense fishing for these species will be six days before and after the full moon. As January approaches, I hope to get my revenge on the shark species. We should start to see the almighty Mako sharks make their appearance. Mako is the best eating of the shark family, the meat is similar to swordfish. It is often found served in restaurants as a substitute for swordfish. Opening weekend we did well on ducks. Hunting the fronts should still be productive though. Don’t call me a “Jerk”
D
on’t call me a jerk unless you are talking fishing. Yes I’m a fan of “Jerk” baits. You know the kind, Rapala’s, Rouge’s, Catch 22, Mirodine, etc., etc., these baits all have one thing in common, we have to jerk them to give them there fish catching qualities. Some of them have plastic lips and some are lipless, but they all resemble a wounded or injured bait fish. I was introduced to my first “Jerk” bait when I was in my teens. The Rapala took the fishing world by storm and my brother and fishing mentor gave me my first one and I have been “hooked” ever since. At that time I was an avid bass fisherman but have since brought some of my bass techniques to salt water fishing, namely speckled trout and redfish. The jerk bait comes into its own in the spring when the waters warm and the fish become more active. Specks and Reds are predators and they are always looking for an easy meal. The jerk bait fits into this category perfectly. I like to throw my bait as far as possible or as close to the bank as possible. Most jerk baits are fairly large so they make lots of noise when they hit the water. Let her sit. That initial splash has attracted any predators in the area. After a few seconds I’ll start my retrieve which consists of one or two short “jerks” and then a pause. It’s the pause that does it. The jerk gives your lure an erratic wobbling motion, like a wounded fish, the pause makes our quarry think his meal is dying and is easy “pickins”. Wham, you’ve got a strike. This “wham” can sometimes be very vicious especially if it’s a red or a large trout. The fish will usually hook himself. You will also set the hook because of your natural reaction to the strike. Once you’ve fought your fish to the bank or boat, be very careful removing your lure from the fish’s mouth. I once had a red imbed two sets of treble hooks on the back end of a Rouge right in the palm of my hand. Fortunately, my son was with me to help remove the front

hooks from the fish and then the other hooks from my hand. “Ouch”. Jerk baits can be floating or sinking. I like both. If the water I’m fishing is very shallow, 2 foot or less, I’ll use a floater. As I jerk the bait it will dive about 12 inches and then slowly float back to the surface. In deeper water I like the sinking type. Most of these have no lips and sink very slowly. I’ll let her sink about 2 feet and then start my jerk- pause retrieve. Both type baits can be very deadly on specks and reds. Several years ago I ran a charter with two men from Florida. These guys were great guys’ and great fishermen. We had worked all of my favorite spots with live shrimp and by noon we had a very respectable box of fish. The sun got overhead, it got very hot, and the fish bite stopped. On the way in I decided to stop at a little point that had produced for me in the past. We drowned shrimp for 15 minutes without a bite. I was ready to pull the pole and head for home. One of my clients asked if he could try something he had picked up in Florida. Sure, why not. He pulled out a little “jerk” bait. I asked what it was and was told it was a “Mirrodine”. His first cast produced nothing. His second produced a fat 3 pound trout. His third, another trout. I immediately asked him if he had a few more of those little buggers. We finished out our limit on “Jerk” baits, and headed in. Warm weather and “Jerk” baits go together. It’s this time of year that this bait really comes into its own. So if you see me on the water I won’t mind if you call me a “Jerk”- Jerk Bait that is!! ecember fishing is usually off the charts! The specks are usually in the interior bayous and canals and the water temps are usually in the 50-60, or 40’s if it gets super cold. Trout will usually be caught on single rigged 1/4 oz jigs with Matrix Shad lures in Green Hornet, Avocado, Glow, Ultra Violet, and magneto, etc. A steady slow retrieval works best. es we are still catching a few jumbos behind the the trawl boats but it’s getting tougher. Fewer boats remain off the coasts out of Venice and this makes it an inconsistent option. If the boats are not producing and the seas are nice we have been catching some really nice fish at the floaters and drill ships. The only limiting factor out there is the scarcity of bait. Some days we are bait fishing for hours just to get enough for the day. Thankfully we have been rewarded with our efforts. Remember the conditions may be tougher but if you stick it out and crack the code, you will be rewarded with some nice fish. Stay safe! Capt. A few days after a front when the tidal range is high is the time to go. Suspending jerkbaits around cover, plastics in the wood cover, and slow moving spinnerbaits are good choices for the area. h, December, the month of the jolly fat man and the month of tranquillity on Grand Isle. The cold fronts have been few and far between to this point so the water is still warm. From what we have observed the majority of the shrimp have left the marsh but the shrimp that remain are regularly being harassed by schooling trout. You will have to catch 100 to keep 20 but they are in the northern marsh so don’t pass up those birds. The trout become unpredictable this time of the year so take them where you can. Redfish, now that’s another story, we have a bumper crop of redfish and they are hungry. The reds have been cruising banks from the ponds to the major bays and are hitting just about anything that you throw at them. Dem Sheepshead will be stacking up on rocks and oysters very soon. If offshore is in your plans for December you should also plan to be flexible. Frequent fronts will keep the Gulf stirred up so you have to pick your days. Tuna, Wahoo some groupers and various snappers can lead to a surprising box of fish if your willing to put in the time.
