CAST is the world’s largest fishing trade show. Each year one of the highlights of the show is the New Product Showcase, in which companies roll out their newest and best. Coastal Angler and The Angler were there at Orlando’s Orange County Convention Center in July, sifting through all the offerings of the ICAST New Product Showcase. The following are ICAST winners as well as the new products we feel are some of the most innovative, functional and… frankly impressive, offerings of the year.

F
or anglers, sonar technology is the most rapidly advancing and functional tool in the boat when it comes to catching more and better fish. At the Orlando ICAST in July, Garmin blew the lid off the electronics industry with the introduction of its new Panoptix LiveScope. At the world’s largest sportfishing trade show, the most anticipated event each year is the New Product Showcase, in which companies present their latest and greatest in hopes of being named Best of Category. Awards are decided by a vote of media in attendance, and the Panoptix Livescope was not only awarded “Best Electonics,” it was named “Best of Show” out of 974 new products introduced in 2018. “To not only win the ICAST Best Electronics award, but the Best of Show award, too—it’s an honor we’re incredibly proud of,” said Dan Bartel, Garmin vice president of global consumer sales. “Panoptix LiveScope delivers the best of both scanning and live sonar technologies, and there’s nothing out there even close to it. These awards solidify our commitment to giving anglers and mariners the most innovative technology on the water, and they further strengthen our desire to be the top marine electronics brand in the world.” Panoptix LiveScope is a live-scanning sonar that gives anglers higher resolution and easier-to-interpret images of structure, bait and fish swimming below and around the boat than ever before. Garmin’s revolutionary Panoptix all-seeing sonar technology was the first to deliver live sonar images in real-time—forwards, backwards, sideways and below the boat—even while stationary. Now, thanks to the active scanning capabilities of Panoptix LiveScope, anglers can see images and movement so clear and precise that it’s even possible to distinguish between species of fish. “Panoptix changed the electronics game a couple of years ago,” said Jason Christie, Bassmaster Elite Series and Garmin pro. “Now, LiveScope is even taking it to the next level. The cool thing about it is the simplicity of it. What you see is what is there. The only picture that could be better is if you dive into the water with goggles, and I’m not sure that’s really even better.” Like other Garmin Panoptix transducers, LiveScope features two modes in one transducer—LiveScope Down and LiveScope Forward— and can be installed on a trolling motor or the transom. Depending on

the angler’s fishing preferences and techniques, LiveScope can easily be adjusted to change views. Point the LiveScope transducer down to see directly below the boat or forward to see around the boat. The Panoptix LiveScope system includes a compact GLS 10 sonar black box with an LVS32 transducer and a simple plug-and-play Garmin Marine Network connector for easy installation and integration with a compatible Garmin chartplotter. A trolling motor barrel and shaft mounting kit and a transom mounting kit are also included.

ayaker’s paradise might be the perfect description for the waters of Franklin County, Fla. Skinny waters inaccessible to powerboats are everywhere. In these shallows await redfish, trout, flounder, jack crevalle, pompano and more. Even freshwater species, like largemouth bass, bream and catfish can be had. There are more than 40 canoe/kayak launches in and around Franklin County, most are found within Tate’s Hell State Forest or the Apalachicola National Forest. Kayaker options also include the seemingly endless miles of shoreline along the bays, and the Gulf of Mexico is accessible at roadside.
Seasonal patterns, at times, will dictate the available species, but most are here for the taking all year. Live bait is always a sure bet, but you can keep your load light with a handful of artificial lures and have tremendous success. If you’re here in the fall, redfish will eagerly explode on a walking topwater plug like a Rapala Skitterwalk or a Zara Spook. Nothing will get an angler’s heart thumping more than seeing these bruisers blow up on the surface and peel drag. Trout are also in full force in the fall, and a MirrOlure MirrOdine is hard to beat, but they too, will chomp topwater plugs. Jigs tipped with Berkley Gulp! Shrimp should always be part of your line-up, because they will catch nearly anything that swims. North winds can make the shallows along the Gulf perfect for a kayak fishing trip, and late summer to early fall can provide king and Spanish mackerel action that can’t be rivaled. Steel leaders and stout reels are a must because these toothy critters will strip drag like a freight train before giving up. The Carrabelle and Apalachicola rivers are teaming with bass, bream and catfish, but don’t be surprised if you get caught up just trying to take in the breathtaking scenery and wildlife found in these tidal waters. Otters, turtles, alligators and an endless array of shore birds can be seen in these pristine and diverse ecosystems. The Apalachicola Paddle Jam festival will be held Oct. 5-7. So, It Begins....
T
he fall migration, the tourists are going home, the kids are back in school, baseball is giving way to football, the hunters are getting ready to hunt, and us fishermen are sensing a change! Although I like to fish all year long, in my opinion the fall is the best time of year to fish. Seems like one morning you wake up and there is a slight chill in the morning air and you know it’s time. You pack up the gear, hook up the trailer and head to the ramp. Your Yeti is full of hot coffee, you down a breakfast sandwich and break away from the dock. That’s when you notice the water is still warm, there’s a slight fog on the bay and as you near the inlet you see it, schools of bait everywhere, predator fish clearing the water, crashing the bait, the gulls are going nuts and that’s when you realize it’s just you and your boys, not another boat in sight! You inch up to the bait school and toss a medal into the blitz and BANG, you’re hooked up! Yup, doesn’t get any bet-
ter than this! Bottomline is the fish know it too. Call it instinct, mother nature, whatever you like, but the bait fish ball up to protect themselves and whether it’s a big bull red or a huge king the fish know it’s time to eat to get ready to move either inshore, offshore or south. It’s like a switch turns on in their heads and it’s time to feast! Fall in the Carolinas is the best. Sure, we sometimes miss the big blues and stripers up north schooling up and heading south, feeding on schools of Bunker, (Oops, Menhaden). But when you really think about it where do the schools go? Answer: The Carolinas! Whether you’re after a Tuna, Mahi, Blue Marlin or a monster Wahoo in the Blue Water, schooling Bluefish or Bluefin on the Outer Banks, fishing the rocks for Bull Reds, Black Drum, Flounder or hitting the ledges for Grouper and Snapper it’s all here and it all starts firing up in the fall! THE LAST CAST
M
y past few articles have been fishing tips but with the summer season coming to an end I decided this month wouldn’t be a fishing tip or how to article and more of a lesson. “The Dash” poem influences my daily life and how I live. I’ve included it in my article for you to read, but the long and short of it is about how the most important time in your life is not your birth date or death but the time in between. About 12 years ago my Grandfather passed away suddenly. He was the man who brought the love of fishing to my Dad and then my Dad to my brother and me. Sometime after he died I thought about all the times we fished together and most of the memories of him come from fishing, then I thought, when did he fish last, when was his last cast and was that last cast a memorable one. My family and I fill a lot of our
“dash” with fishing. Some of my best memories come from fishing trips with my family. I’m sure we can’t all remember our first cast, I know I can’t, it was probably off a dock using a Zebco fishing for Bluefish, but what’s more important is that last cast. We live in a world surrounded by negativity trying to ruin our “dash” whether it’s sitting in front of a computer, tablet or TV we have media outlets lying to us telling us how horrible things are. For some of us we escape to a shoreline or boat where if it’s only for a couple hours we get to not worry about the world around us and just enjoy what the good Lord has created for us. We throw out cast after cast after cast not knowing what we are going to catch if anything most of the time, we just keep casting not thinking that this could be my last cast. So, while you’re out there enjoy it, make it a memory, whether it be a solo trip or with friends and family make every cast count.
We all say ok just one more cast, so after each time you say that treat it like it’s your last. Pack that memory away knowing that the last cast was just as great as the first. As always, I wish you calm winds, tight lines and following seas.

The Dash
I read of a man who stood to speak at a funeral of a friend. He referred to the dates on the tombstone from the beginning... to the end. He noted that first came the date of birth and spoke of the following date with tears, but said what mattered most of all was the dash between those years. For that dash represents all the time they spent alive on earth and now only those who loved them know what that little line is worth. For it matters not, how much we own, the cars..the house...the cash. What matters is how we lived and loved and how we spend our dash. So think about this long and hard; are there things you’d like to change? For you never know how much time is left that still can be rearranged. To be less quick to anger and show appreciation more and love the people in our lives like we’ve never loved before. If we treat each other with respect and more often wear a smile...remembering that this special dash might only last a little while. So when your eulogy is being read, with your life’s actions to rehash, would you be proud of the things they say about how you lived your dash? by Linda Ellis

asked by the owners of Itlewas Coastal Angler Magazine, MyrBeach, to write a little piece on
offshore fishing tips. Capt. Mike and his sons are good friends and pass coworkers of mine, so I figured I’d give it a shot. As I tackled this task I thought instead of offshore fishing tips maybe try tips to make you a better offshore fisherman. I’ve been fishing in and around the coast of the Carolinas all my life and when it comes to fishing for a living you learn something new every day because no two days are the same. Whether it’s learning by trial and error or listening and applying the advice from the older “salts” around the dock. Which in my experience salty is always best! Because once you start steaming passed the Sea Buoy you are heading into a different world. Into a world where fish fly and birds swim! I’ve been fortunate enough to have worked the deck of many
boats both commercial and charter with some of the best captains on the East Coast. So, when it was my time to take the helm, I try to exercise the teachings that were passed down to me from these captains every time I leave the dock. So here are three of the biggest tips I can give when it comes to fishing offshore. 1. “Never Leave Fish to Go Find Fish.” This is pretty much Rule #1! Now that you have found where the big fish are biting the hard parts over. Now grind on them. Work that piece of bottom you are sitting on. The inshore side, the offshore side, see what else you can find in that area you are in without going too far. You will have much more success in filling the coolers up if you just stay put. 2. “Always Have Two.” You’re heading offshore where there are no stores to stop and get supplies, parts or groceries so make sure you have everything you need. Especially when it comes to being
able to get your vessel home. Depending on what size boat you have depends on how much you can take. Extra fuel filters, oil filters, hose clamps and every boat no matter what size should always have a working tool box. Nothing breaks at the dock! Duct tape and zip ties or a must for any offshore trip. 3.”Have Your Head On A Swivel.” Always be looking around! Whether it is at your bottom machine, watercolor, your gauges, weather patterns even down to what the fish are spitting up when they come over the rail. As you are riding out look at your bottom machine. What’s the bottom doing? Is it changing? Some of my favorite fishing spots are ones that I rode over just going from spot to spot. Always glance at your gauges. Sometimes you can spot trouble before it happens. The more you observe the more you will learn. He always loved anything to do with the water, from fishing to selling boats. He fished a couple of years on the kingfish FLW tour and he still fishes a few tournaments today, but most on his days off he spends time with his family. His boys keep boss lady and him busy. During the summer he is a charter captain out of Little River, SC. In the winter he commercial fishes for different species using different techniques. He always says, “I love being a Fisherman”.

On The River with Matt Varnadore When my wife and I started our business, I was not much of a kayaker and to be honest I never kayaked unless they were a free perk at some park or resort we were visiting. So, with that being said I thought the best thing for us to do was to start a kayaking business. Makes sense, right? I had no idea what types of kayaks to buy so I took a tour with a local outfitter in Awendaw, SC and she was able to help guide me. My wife and I went out in February on this kayak tour in the sit in type of kayak and I found out quickly that those were not for me. I'm a little on the heavy side and while out on the tour I rolled my kayak in the FREEZING cold water. So that made my mind up on what not to buy. Now some people are going to disagree with me and that's fine because what I have found is kayak preference is a personal preference. After my freezing dip in the Wambaw Creek I decided to buy sit on top ocean kayaks. To me they seem more stable and are easy to get in and out of. Now I find myself kayaking more and more because it offers a different experience than a motor boat. Its quieter, more relaxing and you can explore places that you could never reach with a motor boat. Kayak fishing has now become one of me and my boy’s favorite past times because it adds a different element to fishing. I love to crappie fish out of my kayak because as you already know crappie love to gather around structure. Well in Conway we have a lot of great gathering places for crappie along many of the bridges. By using my kayak, I can position myself in the most perfect spot to catch a mess. My boys and I have made kayak fishing a family event as well and we can cover a lot of different areas to find fish. We each get a kayak and load it down with our equipment and strike out. The Waccamaw River is an amazing place to kayak. You can explore many of the backwater cypress swamps or for the more seasoned kayaker paddle the Blue Trial. The Blue Trail is approximately 100 miles long that meanders through Conway and empties into the Winyah Bay. The Waccamaw offers a lot of opportunities for most any type of boater. Take a day and give Conway and the Waccamaw River a chance because you never know what you will find while On the River.

once read a survey that stated about 90% of people who own boats also have at least one dog. Out of that 90%, nearly 50% of those people regularly take their dogs along with them on the water. I fall into that category as well. All my dogs have been ‘boat dogs’, and all of them have loved being out on the water. But before you leave the dock with Fido, there are a few things to consider prior to putting your pooch on the pontoon. Just like us two-legged animals, dogs need clean, fresh water to keep them hydrated and happy. Regardless of what kind of beverages you take for yourself, be sure to have plenty of cool (not ice cold) fresh water for your dog. That can be in the form of several bottles of water, or even a thoroughly cleaned gallon milk jug with tap water in it. You should know how much water your dog needs during the day… so take 1 ½ times that much along. Carry a plastic or rubber-based metal bowl that won’t spill if the boat is rolling a little. And take them something to munch on too. You wouldn’t go out for a day of fishing without a few snacks. Take some doggie snacks for your pup. Something that isn’t affected by heat and can be kept in a watertight container. If you plan to be away from home all day, then you need to take a real meal along.
Now the aforementioned items will ultimately result in your pup’s need to relieve themselves at some point during the day. Let’s presume that you’ve fed him his morning meal, and he’s had time to digest and eliminate breakfast, so you’re not immediately facing a bathroom break as soon as you get on the boat. But, as a responsible pet owner, you are providing him enough water during the day, he will eventually have to go pee. And just like us humans, they can only “hold it” for so long. Don’t make your pet miserable and induce a mentally bad experience on the boat by expecting them to “hold it” forever. So, what do you do? Well, you plan your day and your destinations such that you have easily accessible pit stops during the day. Even if it means pulling up to an island, a beach, or a marina to let your pup relieve itself. And of course, remember all the things you need to do to clean up after your pet. Be aware of leash laws, etc. wherever you stop. On a normal day, given the conditions described above, I wouldn’t expect my pup to go more than four hours without a pit stop. Neither should you. Something else we can tend to forget is shade for your pup, and keeping your pup cool in hot weather. Find someplace on the
boat that offers a cool shaded place for your dog to lay down comfortably. That hot deck that burns your bare feet is doing the same to his paw pads. Put down a towel, soaked in cool fresh water, for them to lay on. All my four-legged best friends have been retrievers, and they have all absolutely loved being in, and around, the water. In fact, Buck, The Wonder Dog’s been on the boat with me since he was 12 weeks old. But remember, you’re bringing the dog along, so everyone can have fun. They should not be treated like an inconvenience. If that’s the case…leave them at home or at the pet spa. And while they’re on the boat, they need to be constantly in sight, and under your supervision. If you decide to stop for a swim, and you choose to let your pup go in the water, then I would suggest getting them a Puppy PFD, which is a comfortable, wearable flotation device that fits your dog’s build. You want them to enjoy having this PFD on. Here’s a simple fact. It’s fun to

throw the tennis ball and have your pup chase it in the water. However, because they’re having fun, they will swim to the point of exhaustion and could drown. So be aware of when they are getting tired and get them out of the water before they get into trouble. For most of us, our dogs are members of the family; whether they’re a duck dog, a show dog or just a loveable companion. And just like any other member of the family, it’s our responsibility to make sure they are safe and comfortable on the water. So, before you take your best four-legged friend out on the boat, give some serious thought to the things they’ll need out there too. Make it a part of your Pre-Launch Checklist. Your pup will thank you for it.

Inshore the Flounder and Redfish bite has been on fire. Look for this to continue through September. Using Mud Minnows and Cut Mullet is the go-to for both these species, but live shrimp will also work well. Nearshore the Spanish Mackerel have been biting well on the troll using 00 spoons. Offshore the bottom fishing is good as usual Vermillion Snapper and Trigger fish have been a solid catch daily. Look for a lot of Wahoo action along with Mahi Mahi on the troll.
Along with Redfish and Flounder the Black drum bite has been great in the Georgetown and Murrells Inlet Shrimp and Squid are a great choice for Black drum and Cut or live Mullet are the goto for Reds and Flounder. Look for the Spanish Mackerel bite to remain steady through September along with King Mackerel and the occasional Cobia. Offshore the bottom fishing has been great using any type of cut bait. Although the red snapper season is closed you can still catch your fair share to release. Big Wahoo and Mahi are hitting great on the Troll further offshore.
Whiting and Bluefish have been hitting well on the piers. Some big red drum being caught in the surf along with Flounder again Mullet is the choice bait. The Spot have already showed up and look for them to start hitting steady in the coming weeks using blood worms is always the best option for these guys.

TARGETING SPECIFIC SPECIES BY JIGGIN JERRY
A
verage anglers will usually try to find some available time in their busy schedule to grab a fishing rod and some everyday bait, such as frozen shrimp or mullet, and head out to the water to fish. When approached by a curious party and asked what species they are targeting, these anglers usually reply, “Whatever bites.” I have run into quite a few anglers just like this, and in most cases, they spend their fishing adventure catching sailor’s choice, some other oddball species, and occasionally finding a couple of really good fish. I have been asked by many anglers for help over the years, and the first thing I always suggest is targeting a specific species of fish. This will increase your chances of having a successful fishing trip the next time you head out for an adventure. Depending on the location you are fishing and the type of water, whether from a pier or off a beach or in the marsh, there are a certain number of game fish that you can specifically target. Spotted seatrout, red drum, flounder, sheepshead and black drum are amongst the most common inshore game fish targeted, but there are also some smaller species, like whiting, spot and croaker that are targeted for a family fish fry.
To target these species, you will need to do some studying and investigation, and you will find that learning their traits will greatly increase your success rate. For instance, if you would like to specifically target spotted seatrout, you would want to know the type of habitat where they like to gather for purposes of feeding, mating and moving in and out of tides, so you can correctly identify the locations in which you might find them. You would also investigate and study their diet. Spotted seatrout like shrimp, finger mullet, mud minnows, croaker and pin fish; and knowing this, allows you the option to target them with any one of these live baits. The next recommendation is to study and learn fishing techniques with these baits, rod-and-reel combinations, rigging and tackle needed.
As one will discover when investigating spotted seatrout, they are a game fish that can be caught by using artificial lures, stepping up the game for even more fishing fun. It is also important to know that each species of fish has a different feeding habit.
They prefer different tides, different locations and different types of structure. Some are aggressive, fast-moving fish, while others are slow, sluggish and investigative. A flounder, for instance, loves to lay on the ocean floor and wait, ambushing its prey as they pass above it. Red drum are scavengers, like a catfish, and can smell old, stinky bait from great distances, even in the dark, but are also fast-water, aggressive predators, hunting and chasing down live prey at the bottom, midwater and top water. Sheepshead is a game fish that loves structure. They intensively search poles, pilings and rocks for crustaceans to feed on, but they also love to roam flats, searching the bottom for shellfish and swimming into marsh grasses in the shallows feeding on snails, mussels, clams and fiddler crabs When you are out fishing, these game fish become your prey, and the best way to become successful in catching your prey is to know as much as you can about them. Using today’s modern technology with the Web, a Google search or YouTube search can become a wealth of information. Your local Department of Natural Resources will also have plenty of helpful information. I recommend the DNR to be one of your first stops in your hunt because they will provide crucial need-to-know fishing regulations for each one of these fish species, such as size limits, catch limits, etc. I hope this information helps you with your next fishing adventure. THE QUEST FOR A DINOSAUR – LEPISOSTEUS OSSEUS!

eah, I don’t know how to say it either, but this fish has been around since the dawn of time and it is fun to catch if you can hook them. This fish lives in the slow waters or the southern swamps as well as in the lakes though out the south. As I said in the previous article, I fish for whatever and whenever and when the time is right, I chase the Longnose Gar. So why do I chase these so called “trash fish?” The gar, the mudfish etc.…why? Let me just say, they are a formidable adversary and in my opinion are some of the most aggressive and hardest fighting fish in freshwater. I know, there are Salmon, Smallies and even behemoth bucket mouths that do well but I like variety. Therefore, I don’t miss the opportunity to fish for the gar during the hot dog days of summer. The hotter the days, the hotter the fishing. The Longnose Gar or Garpike is the only gar species found in South Carolina. Its other cousins though out the South include the Short
nose Gar, Spotted Gar, Florida Gar and the enormous Alligator Gar which can get up to 8 foot long. These voracious predators use their needle like teeth to catch their prey with a sideways strike of the head. They feed on smaller fish and crustaceans. Although they can be aggressive, for the most part they are curious and shy when approaching the fisherman’s presentation. How does one go about catching a fish whose bony mouth is as hard as a brick wall and almost impossible to get a hook to stay in. Sure, you can use a spinner and have hit after hit and you may even hook one for a brief second but there are much better options. I prefer two completely different methods depending on what the fish are doing. If I know they are there but I can’t sight fish to them, I go with a live bait presentation. I like to use small bluegills or black salty shiners. If you have never used black salty shiners, you are missing out! They are great in the hot weather. I fish both under a slip bobber with a

circle hook on a 20lb fluorocarbon leader. Although they have teeth, they rarely bite you off. I will usually try different depths until I find out where they are in the water column. When a Gar takes the bait, you will see a slight bump on the bobber. DO NOT SET THE HOOK! The bobber will start to move and most time will not even go under the water. The gar has grabbed the bait and is swimming away from other gars. After a short swim, the gar will stop and turn the bait to swallow it. At that time, you need to have a lot of patience. I have waited for 10-15 minutes after the initial take to set the hook. Once your patience has gotten the best of you, tighten up the line and let the circle hook do its job as you apply pressure. If you try to set the hook, you will only rip it out of the fishes’ mouth. Don’t get discouraged. You will miss far more than you hook but when you do, it may be a 40 plus inch fish! My favorite way to chase gar is without a hook! That is right. You heard me say it, without a hook. When I can see Gar cruising the surface or basking in the sun, I break out the flyrod. I use an 8wt rod with a 20lb fluorocarbon leader

attached to a rope fly. Yes, a rope fly and no hook. I make the fly using a 6 inch piece of cotton rope. I tie a loop on one end and fray the other 5 inches. I cast to the cruising fish, leading them by a few feet. Once the gar starts to investigate, I give a quick short strip. This usually triggers the gar to strike. Once they take the fly, I count to about 5 and apply slight pressure. The gars fine teeth will get tangled in the rope and trust me, you will need pliers to get it out. You can also use this trick with conventional tackle by rigging the rope like a Texas rigged worm. I encourage you to give these prehistoric fish a chance and I guarantee you will not be disappointed. Fall is just around the corner and it won’t be long before we will be back on the intercoastal and the inlets. Until next time, keep those paddles wet and Fish on!

ike most southern ports, Charleston, S.C. offers plenty of inshore angling opportunities. You’ll find redfish in the bays, seatrout in the channels, plus flounder, cobia and spadefish on local wrecks. “Those are all fun,” said Darcy Hill (#fishcharleston), but if you want to hook something with a real sense of Southern hospitality, the inshore sheepshead fishery is tough to beat. From Isle of Palms to Folly Island, and right on up into the confluence of the Ashley and Cooper rivers surrounding the city, you’ll find these battle-ready fish hugging structure.” An abundance of sheepshead doesn’t mean they’re pushovers. Quite the contrary, Hill pointed out, “Sheepshead can be challenging to catch. You have to poke into all the nooks and crannies amongst structure points, and keep moving until you get on them.” For bank fishermen, Hill recommended public access points like the Folly beach, Isle of Palms or Mount Pleasant piers. Boaters should tie-up to pilings, docks or other structure (where legal) and fish each piece thoroughly. Sometimes, she said, moving your bait just 5 or 6 inches to one side or the other makes a ton of difference. “We generally use fiddler crabs or oysters for bait,” explained the 32-year old Folly Island resident. Bury the hook in your offering and hide the point. To get the bite started, chum with crushed oysters or barnacles. Fiddlers work best from May through February while oysters rule in cooler months. The end of the ebb and start of the flood usually see the best scores.” Setting up for sheepshead, Hill uses a Carolina-rig with a size 1 Owner Mosquito hook, a ¾-ounce egg sinker and a 1-foot length of 30-pound test mono leader. She’ll team this with a fast-tip rod and KaskKing 3,000 series Kodiak spinning reel filled with 40-pound test KastKing Super Power or KastPro braided line. “I like the abrasion resistance of these lines,” she noted, “and that Kodiak reel just gets the job done. Last week it out-muscled a 15-pound spadefish.” Keep in mind, Hill added, that sheepshead can be light biters, so watch for line twitches in addition to feeling for strikes. Set the hook hard because these fish have a big set of teeth and tough lips. Pull straight up, not to the side. Keep your rod high and walk the fish away from the nastiest tangles as you reel up. he action peaked at the end of August here in northern Costa Rica, with multiple sailfish releases and daily shots at marlin battles. Frank Bellizio, Bob Sherley and Chet Jasak had the trip of a lifetime with sweet sailfish and mighty marlin releases. Once they got home we received this: “I returned last week from my trip to Nosara,” wrote Frank Bellizio, of Tampa, Fla. “It was great to finally get to go fish with your team in Costa Rica. I can’t tell you how much I enjoyed the trip and will recommend Fishing Nosara to everyone. “Bob has ALS and his mobility and strength are not the best. Both Capt. William and Capt. Francisco really accommodated us so that we were able to help our friend land both a sailfish and marlin. “Bob was a diver and commercial fisherman in his earlier years. We are all 71 or older, and he said this was probably his last chance to catch a sailfish or marlin. Capt. William on the Wanderer and Capt. Francisco on the Explorer made it happen. “If Capt. Francisco wanted to, he could have ended our day earlier, but he hung in and we got the sailfish late in the day. Capt. William had to work the Wanderer over and over to keep the marlin in position so Bob and I could get it landed. These men and their crew (Johnny and Elias) are much more than just employees, they have heart, and you are blessed to have them on your staff.” Kathleen Clarke of Ottawa, Ontario came to us as a novice angler, but after her trip on the Discoverer she is a full-fledged big-time bluewater angler. “Just wanted to let you know that we had an incredibly amazing time on our fishing trip,” Kathleen wrote in an email. “I don’t think that it could have been any better. Capt. Carlos and Mate Kevin were stellar. I would highly recommend that crew to anyone. “Kevin kept the boat very clean and tidy and made sure we all had everything we needed. Lunch was excellent, also, as was the fruit. We caught a mix of mahi-mahi and sailfish, also saw porpoises and turtles.” Most recently we received this one: “Just wanted to say an enthusiastic thank you for the incredible trip we had thanks to your team,” wrote Jeff Broom, of Jacksonville, Fla. “In three days we got three marlin, two blues and a massive black, three sailfish, a huge dorado, and a good deal more tuna and mahi. “Thanks to Capt. Alex and his hard working deckhand Wilson, I was able to cross marlin off my bucket list of fish to catch. It was definitely a dream for me, and I know I speak for all the guys in our group that it was definitely the fishing trip of a lifetime! “You could tell how passionate Alex was about fishing. His favorite thing to say after we brought in a catch was, ‘Let’s get another one!’”

W
hen the Spanish conquistadors came to Ecuador, they were in search of gold. The Incas found most of their gold in the headwaters of the Amazon. I recently found gold in the Ecuadorian Amazon… golden dorado. I’ve spent 25 years on the rivers of Ecuador leading kayak and fishing trips. Three years ago, I decided to find golden dorado. Most dorado fishing occurs in Bolivia or northern Argentina. It just didn’t make sense to me that Ecuador, with such similar topography didn’t also have golden dorado. As a fly fishing guide, one of the most fun and sometimes challenging aspects of the job is finding new fishing opportunities. It isn’t unusual for my friend and co-guide, Bob Gernandt, and I to float some stretch of river we’ve never seen to develop a new fishing destination. Doing this in another country can be a bit more complicated, especially when you are heading into one of the biggest jungles in the world. Having a lodge in the cloud forest of the Amazon has allowed me to tap into local knowledge. It also helps to have a partner in-country who knows the lay of the land and can speak the language. Last February, my partner Angel and I spent a month tracking down dorado leads. Angel visited one community after another with photos of golden dorados. The first breakthrough was learning that indigenous communities call the fish by its Ketchua name, Gualo. That led us to a handful of possible rivers to check. We were dependent on local river transportation. The indigenous communities have used dugout canoes for centuries to transport people and goods in the roadless jungle. These canoes are 12-meter-long boats carved out of a tree trunk. We were able to check out three different sections of rivers using these narrow and incredibly tippy canoes. The advantage is these boats can negotiate whitewater while being pushed upstream by a 40-horse outboard. They are almost impossible to stand in, so they are not the best platform to cast an 8-weight fly rod from. We eventually transported a raft and fishing frame upstream in order to float a section of river. It didn’t take long to catch several Ecuadorian golden dorado as well as another species of fish call sabalo. Sabalo fry are the favorite food for dorado, so they are likely found together. If the sabalo survive the dorado, they grow into great sport fish. Their shape is similar to a largemouth bass, but they are much more aggressive and hard fighting. The golden dorado prefer rapids and fast water at the washout of rapids, while sabalo like smooth fast water between rapids. It presents an ideal situation for fishing because there’s no down time! Once you catch a golden dorado, you are hooked for life. These are some of the hardest hitting, hardest fighting, highest jumping fish in the world. I can’t wait to hook into more gold. ick Ratliff, 21, of Elizabethtown, Ky., a senior at Campbellsville University, will be fishing the big show when the Bassmaster Classic launches on the Tennessee River at Knoxville in March. He’s also riding around in a fully rigged Toyota Tundra that’s pulling a Nitro Z20 bass boat, and he’s holding a check for $7,500 for tournament entry fees. It’s all thanks to some last-minute heroics that helped him win the 2018 Carhartt Bassmaster College Series Classic Bracket. Ratliff fought down to the final minutes of the third day in an oh-soclose bracket against a scrappy West Virginia University junior, Nolan Minor of Charlottesville, Va. The anglers wrapped up the day with the two biggest bags of the tournament; Ratliff with 13 pounds, 8 ounces and Minor with 13-4. Ratliff, who is majoring in business administration with an emphasis in marketing, plugged along consistently, throwing a weightless wackyrigged stickworm and keeping his faith. “I had the feeling I was behind,” he said. “I kept my head down, and I knew if the Lord meant it to be, then it would be.” With just 30 minutes left in fishing time, Ratliff picked up three more fish that allowed him to cull up to his winning 13-8. Ratliff was emotional and stunned as family and friends hugged and congratulated him. “It hasn’t sunk in yet,” he said of the win and the Classic berth. “It was so close. I thought I’d lost.
