Boaters and anglers up and down the east coast know there’s an important season between the holidays and spring: Boat Show Season! Timed perfectly to gear-up for some of the best fishing of the year, the National Marine Manufacturers Association’s (NMMA) line-up of premier boating and outdoors shows are the venues where shoppers and dreamers alike can peruse the latest the industry has to offer. s the holidays approach and temperatures drop, many will feel the need to scratch that fishing itch. There is no better place to catch your next trophy this winter than down in sunny south Florida. If it’s monster offshore pelagics you seek, winter offers some of our best fishing. Take your boat or book a charter out of Stuart, Fla.—aka “The Sailfish Capital of the World”—and you are sure to land a sailfish, a bucket list fish for many. Mahi, cobia, kingfish and wahoo will also be biting. Our average January high of 74 degrees will also quickly quench your thirst for warmer weather.
North of Palm Beach, we do a lot of trolling, and south you’ll find live baiting very popular, so don’t forget your sabiki rod. No boat? No problem. We have multiple beach-access points where you can catch your fill of Pompano, whiting, bluefish, snook and more, maybe even a permit or bonefish. In Martin County, check out Stuart Beach, Hobe Sound Beach and Tiger Shores. Excellent jetties and piers include Juno Pier, Ft. Pierce Inlet and Sebastian Inlet, where I recently limited out on redfish one day and caught an inshore slam the next! Fishing off the beach, a “pompano rig” will catch a ton of species and even cut bait on the bottom with a pyramid sinker will work. For lures, I like topwaters in the morning and after that I throw lipped crankbaits and paddletail swimbaits. Regarding inshore saltwater, I love fishing from the Saint Lucie Inlet north to Ft. Pierce. Under the docks and along the mangroves you will find snook, redfish and trout, as well as flounder and drum in deeper holes and channels. If you can’t find any mullet to net, a simple live shrimp and a bobber will catch everything and anything. If you do not have a boat, walk the shoreline for some incredible wade fishing. I caught my first snook wading the docks in Ft. Pierce many years ago. Don’t worry, I didn’t forget about you bass guys! Our incredible bass fishing this time of year starts with the largemouth spawn and plenty of crappie on Lake Okeechobee. I also love Camp Mack in Lake Wales, Fla. Mix up your freshwater game with abundant exotic species fisheries featuring clownknife fish, peacock bass, hybrid bass and even the bullseye snakehead. You will catch exotics in any of the Lake Clarke, Lake Osborne or Lake Ida chains in Palm Beach County. As long as you plan ahead, December is a great month to be on the water. On those picture perfect blue bird days, our boats are heading south to the Louisiana Marsh. The sight fishing for redfish this month, is absolutely stellar. My favorite scenario to fish is just as the tide is rising, with no clouds, and no wind. You don’t get those conditions often, so make the most of em if you are lucky enough to get them. Spinner baits, spoons, top water, and flies will all work. Typically the cold fronts will keep coming, and the winds will blow(I hope I’m wrong). When this happens, we just fish near shore. The reefs, rivers, bridges, and back bay will be our protected waters. Since it’s usually north, northeast and northwest winds, the stuff close to shore is very easy to fish. Sheepshead, redfish, black drum and speckled trout will be all over these places. Live or dead shrimp will certainly make life easy. I like 1/0 live bait hooks, especially if the sheepshead are around. Fishing right against the pilings, rocks and structures, typically bring out the sheep’s. Just bring plenty of extra tackle, snags and break offs are to be expected. For a real challenge, try trolling the rivers for trout. This technique is a true art, and really must be learned on the boat. I’ve not done much of it, but I have seen some of these guys catches. You wouldn’t believe how many big trout these “holy trollers” catch! If you get a chance to go with one of these trolling guys, DO IT!

As the weather and water gets colder look for deeper holes that the fish will stack up in. Structure in the rivers can be good as well with fish hanging around. Fish often become lethargic as the water temperatures drop. Fish slow and low bouncing your lure off the bottom. During these cold days I like to use soft plastics like a Saltwater Assassin sea shad on a ¼ oz. jig head or a sinking corky. Look for flats near drop offs that will heat up quicker during a sunny day. Fish these flats in the afternoon where fish will come to feed. I will work the flats with a Rapala Shadow Rap Shad making a few twitches and letting the bait pause while taking the slack out of the line. Even with the water temperature down I will still work a topwater late in the evening on drop offs to deeper water on the edge of these flats. Slowing down my retrieve to a crawl has produced some solid trout over the years as they are looking for one good meal. I am still finding reds cruising close to the bank along the grass lines looking to eat. There isn’t anything going on as far as tournaments in December but start looking ahead to next year. Take the time to clean up and organize your gear and get ready for the Spring bite. Add that depth finder or anchor system you have been wanting. In the spring there will be the B.C.K.F.C Paddlepalooza15 in Louisiana, G.C.K.F.A. Spring Tournament in Pensacola, Fl., and the M.B.K.F.A Bagwell tournament in Dauphin Island, Al. Also a lot of these groups have a all year online tournament for club members. Go to their sites for more details and to get signed up. All are great tournaments where you can have a great time and meet new anglers. We always have a list of upcoming events on our Kayak Fishing U Facebook page. Always dress for the water temperature and not the air. One wrong move could spell disaster if you aren’t prepared. Remember while fishing from a kayak to always think safety. We are low to the water and not always easily seen. Keep a 360 degree light on at dark and low light conditions, wear a PFD, keep hydrated, and let someone know your float plan.

Despite the closing of Greater Amberjack season that ended at the end of October, it’s still prime time fishing for harvesting big Yellowfin Tuna and Wahoo throughout the winter months. Rough weather and marine forecast is more prevalent this time of year but catching a 1-2 day break in the weather can be rewarding. The most common way of catching the Greater Amberjack for most anglers is by high speed jigging. Though it can be tiresome, it’s a very productive way to land an Amberjack. The immediate strike while high speed jigging is intense and puts up a great fight as most fish will not give up without a fight til the end with the gaff shot. They are also targeted using live baits as well but high speed jigging is the go-to method for most anglers. Using a spinning setup, I’ll rig my Penn Spinfisher 8500 with 80lb Power Pro braid and add a Short 2-3ft monofilament or fluorocarbon leader to add a little stretch. I’ll pair this reel on a Penn Carnage Jigging rod in a medium/heavy to a heavy action size rod and tie on a vertical jig or flutter jig. Either rod should give enough backbone to haul up a big Amberjack with more ease. They tend to stick close to rig platforms or artificial reefs along the coast so getting them above and out of the wreckage or structure is key along with utilizing your drag properly. Stout, high quality gear is beneficial in catching Amberjack being that they put up such a big fight. Stack up on tackle and rigging before heading out because there’s a good chance you’ll be losing some gear throughout the day and having to tie on a new jig and leader after the fish runs for cover into the structure below.

Inshore Cold Front Trolling
The cold fronts and frosts started a little early this year according to the weather folks, and that means something great. The speckled trout have moved deep into bayous and rivers. Now is the time to start trolling for these toothy predators, and I have to add, limiting out quickly. Trolling for specks is a technique I learned as a kid when my grandfather and my dad would take me fishing in bayou cumbest. We would run the boat motor a little faster than idle, and just cruise up and down the bayou from Point of Pines all the way to Bang’s Island. We would fill the cooler quickly as my zebco 33 got a workout from fighting fish and the speed of the boat. Occasionally redfish would crash the party and it was all smiles about that. Much has changed since then, as I’ve refined my trolling technique and learned more about patterning fish. First let’s talk about gear selection. I typically troll with two rods in my kayak. Both rods are in the 7-7’6” range. This helps spread the lures out further. I like spinning reels for this technique due to the ability to quickly and easily loosen and tighten the drag. Another bonus is the noise a spinning reel makes as its peeling drag. A bait clicker bait caster will also alert you to a fish on the line. For line selection I use 10-20 lb braid as main line and 10-15 feet of 14-17 lb flourocarbon as a leader. Each rod has a “donkey rig” tied on, with two different sized jigheads until I figure out what depth the fish are holding at. I typically start out with a 1/4 oz and a 1/16th oz Eye Strike “trouteye” jighead. The plastic I use is always different as I like to try different things, but a consistent producer over the years has been an H and H cocahoe minnow in “root beer” color. In a kayak, rod holders are a necessity. Choose some that are easy to get the rod out of, but also hold the rod securely. My kayak is propelled by paddle, so I take a leisurely pace as I paddle up and down the bayou. When a fish hits, it typically means there is a school in that same spot. After reeling in the fish, it’s definitely worth it to cast right back in the same spot. Target areas to focus on are, bends in the bayous or river, creek mouths, and noticeable structure. Remember, they are there to find warmer water, but still need current to feed. Trolling is a great way to get the whole family involved. Yes, it’s cold some days, but talk them into going and you’ll surely have them hooked just like I was as I 5 year old kid.
