INDIAN RIVER LAGOON FISHING FORECAST The month of December is full of anticipation and joy for one of the most exciting holidays of the year. This just happens to be Christmas. Through out this time of year, both family and friends will gather together and create memories that will last a lifetime. One really great way to do this is to take them fishing. There is no way to spend quality time with the ones you love than to fish. During this time of the year, the flounder bite should be at its peak. Thanks to cooler water and air temperatures, large “door mat” sized flounder will be in search of an easy meal throughout our region. Flounder are not very picky when it comes to feeding. They can be caught with a wide variety of natural or artificial baits such as bright colored jerk baits that typically have a paddle tail. Flounder will also aggressively feed on baits such as live mud minnows, live finger mullet, live or frozen shrimp, or cut bait. One of my favorite ways to catch them is on spinning gear which consists of a 7’ medium action spinning reel combo equipped with 20 pound test braided line and 15 pound test mono leader. Flounder are ambush predators that feed primarily by sight. When targeting them I pre2 POLK & SUMTER

fer to periodically bump or jig the bait across the bottom to make it more visible. This is especially true when drifting along a sandy bottom adjacent to channel drop offs or near structure. According to the FWC, flounder have a minimum size limit of 12” total length and have a daily bag limit of 10 per harvester per day. Also, now is a good time to catch a few nice redfish and black drum. Baits such as live shrimp, cut baits (mullet or lady fish) scented jerk baits, or even gold spoons will receive plenty of action from a hungry redfish in search of an easy meal. When using shrimp or cut baits, anglers will want to concentrate their efforts near channel drop offs, mangrove islands, or boat docks. Having a little patience and fishing these baits on the bottom is the best way to hook up with one of these hard fighting fish. For those who enjoy casting artificial lures your approach will be a little different. Rigging spoons or soft plastic baits such as Bass Assassin’s 4” Sea Shad Combo (salt and pepper) will be a good way to increase your chances of bringing a fish boat side. LAKE ALFRED / AUBURNDALE / WINTER HAVEN FISHING FORECAST Spec fishing is on!! If you enjoy fishing for Specs, this is the time of year to get out there and do it!! We are getting reports of a record number of 1 – 1 ½ pound Specs being caught. Our best reporting lakes at this time are Lakes Haines, Rochelle, and Alfred here in Lake Alfred. The best bait is still Live Minnows, but using Ice Jigs may also bring you good results. If you’d like to “mix it up” another recommendation is try using a Silver Spoon. Find which method works best for you. Prime season for Specs should run now through the end of March. Remember . . as the weather gets colder, Specs are getting closer to the shore line, so try fishing from some of the docks and fishing piers available at many of our area lakes. If you prefer boat fishing, try fishing the canals. The water gets colder there first and provides favorable conditions for both Spec and Bass fishing. Stop in and see me for directions and current information anytime!! Bass are in their pre-spawning season and are looking for food. Now is the time to snag those big ones!! All of our area lakes are offering great Bass fishing at this time. If you want that BIG catch, our all-time recommended best bait is still the Booyah Lipless Crank Bait in Royal Color. Using a LARGE worm or craw will also do the trick . . The BIGGER the better!! We don’t have tournament photos to share this month, but we always like to support our young “Anglers in the Making”. CENTRAL FLORIDA FRESHWATER FLY FISHING REPORT Fall Fly Fishing Multi-Species Feeding Freenzy Best Time: Morning Surface Temp: 75F Clarity: Slightly Tannic, 18-21” Tip of the Week: The fishing lately has had some spectacular moments and some really slow moments. The water temperature is staying lower which has induced a pretty aggressive bite as long as the weather is helpful and not too active. This has kept the fish active and are gorging themselves into footballs. Usually you will find them schooling the shad over submerged hydrilla. Cast around the edges of the school, and when the bass strike it will be aggressive. Techniques: The largemouth have been active and are getting fat for the Winter. They have been actively feeding on shad and have been aggressively devouring small white streamers fished near the flicking baitfish. Keep your eyes peeled for roaming bass along sandy break lines they will eat a fly and often swim out of seemingly nowhere. Continue to throw smaller streamers such as bead chain Clousers or white Wooly Buggers around grass lines. The winds have been manageable so that has helped the fishing success. When the gust do come take shelter around whatever cover you find and concentrate fishing the backsides and the current breaks for bass feeding upon the pinned baitfish. With still cool water temps expect the Spec bite to keep improving. The water isn’t quite cold enough for them to school up real tight but they can still be caught drifting away from the shore. Many people are fishing the lights from their boat at night. And pulling out the fly rod for some extra action. Small white streamer patterns in size 6 or smaller will be perfect. Also, work the outer edges of the submerged grass lines. With the high water, crappie (specs) are cruising these deep water edges during the day as are bass. We have been repeating this for weeks, but it still applies. Pay extra attention to grass lines and hard cover on sunny days when the bass don’t chase as much. The bluegill action has been very good. With Popper Dropper rigs still being the best bet with a size 10 popper in white or electric blue, and a small damselfly nymph or Prince Nymph trailed behind it about two feet. Also they have been munching the small streamers as well. When they are around hard cover, it has been docks, the less grass the better. Black spiders have also been successful around grass or docks. They are also around the flowing water picking off distraught baitfish. When fishing the current boat placement is key since you don’t want to spook these concentrated fish. They respond best to streamers matching the shad they are eating. Placing these flies into the pipe or on the slack sides are your best bet. These spots are usually best when the water is moving but some fish will stick around the cover.
Find Warmth & A Better Comfort Zone With this colder water that December normally brings, many species will relocate from their normal haunts to some shallower locations. Some reasons: to find warmth and a better comfort zone, to find the bait and food source, or to spawn.. Don’t always assume that colder water and weather sends everything 50’ under the sea. Some Gags will still be in the 4’ to 8’ shallow water rocks. But the baitfish for the most part have left, leaving the Gags to take almost any offering that swims by. Reds can be found in some skinny water this time of year, 6” to 18”. A 27” 8lb. Red can be totally submerged in 7” of water, making for some of the best sight fishing of the year with the clearer water. Mangrove (Gray) Snapper are gathered up around most any spring in shallow water. If you can catch your 5 per person limit, you have found a honey hole. They must be 10” minimum, and most are cookie cutters, at 9” or 9-3/4”. Sheepies, are also congregating around the shallows. Rocks, barnacle covered bridge pilings, oyster bars, and the like, in 1’ to 8’ will put ya on these black and white striped, convict, zebra resembled, fine eating fish. They got a set of chompers only a mama could love, and ugly is to the bone. Mullet: or as we Crackers call them, the vegetarian chicken of the sea. The cooler temps will have them gathered up in the rivers and residential canals, in 2’ to 6’ by the hundreds. Space won’t allow, but if interested, e-mail me for rigging and technique. Good ole shore bank fun, and better eating. No size, 50 per person. Also this is the month for gift giving with Christmas around the corner. So naturally, one of the best and easiest gifts to give is a simple gift card.. Nowadays you can get one from most any retailer out there including of course your big box sports stores. Also don’t forget one of the very best gifts bar none that a boater can possibly have is an annual membership to seatow. Give a hint to the wife, girlfriend or just plain good friend that this is a very important gift that you would like to have. I’ve had to use my membership before and was dang glad I had it. CENTRAL FLORIDA REGION FORECAST The boys from Wisconsin having a great day in Winter Haven!
It’s hard to believe that I’m already writing for the December issue when it feels like I just finished last New Year’s edition… That being said, Paula and I want to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas! We hope that everyone’s nets are filled with family, friends, joy, love, happiness, and A LOT of big bass! So far in November we have had nights in the 60’s with nothing usually higher than 85 during the day. That has been a very good thing for these bass that had been suffering through 85-90 degree water temps for months. As of mid-November, the water temperature in Central Florida is down and averaging 73-75 degrees. In Winter Haven on the South Chain the cooler temps make for some very fun fishing as the bass are less lethargic and are feeding with
more aggression. With families, kids, and people that just don’t get to fish a lot, we have a combo meal of small/medium domestic and medium/large wild shiners being trolled behind the boat. As always, there are rods rigged-up with the holy trinity of baits: flukes, swimbaits, and senkos (along with the obligatory topwater.) As for artificial baits go, natural colors like watermelon red/pearl or glimmer blue work very well for plastics. Fishing the “dirtier” lakes on the chain, use a deep junebug or black and blue pattern. If you like a topwater bite, it is hard to beat a Rebel Jumpin’ Minnow or Pop-R. When we are fishing out of Camp Mack’s River Resort on the Kissimmee Chain, we usually take a different approach. Frogs and Gambler EZ Swimmers thrown thru the jungle of pads, kissimmee grass, and any hyacinth you can find are always a good bet. If the temps stay cooler there will be a wave of prespawn fish moving up onto the flats looking to feed and prepare for bedding and this will make flipping the flats a more productive pattern. For family trips we’ll always have native wild shiners and we have plenty of pockets and points around the lake to setup shop and let the kids each have a rod with a shiner out. I honestly love seeing the competition between siblings heat-up the moment that first fish is in the boat! We’ll also have a wave of snowbirds migrating, so the lakes will have more boats than usual for months to come. Common courtesy, and common sense, will serve us all well as we all try to enjoy a day on the water. Please respect each other, and other people’s space while fishing this season. If you find people fishing a point or any stretch of shoreline, please be considerate and give each other space – there’s plenty of water for everyone. KISSIMMEE CHAIN FISHING FORECAST If you like catching a lot of bass than Lake Kissimmee is where you want to be. Solid 2-5lb’rs are readily available. These bass are schooling and they are hungry. Areas where it is opened up within a cut are best. The first three weeks of the month from sunrise to 11am is the peak action time for the schooling bass. However, during the full moon cycle the activity will peak between 3pm to sunset. That morning bite is done and you will swear your schoolers have moved. They haven’t moved on you- they just are feeding at a different time during the full moon cycle. 6’ of water and these cuts seem to be the magic depth. Best are artificial baits to throw on the schooling bass. Zoom Super Flukes on top is best. Color doesn’t seem to matter. A top water Whopper Popper or a Rapala J11 black and silver are also very effective. For you shiner anglers slow troll them in the cuts beyond your boat instead of passing them. Lake Hatchineha is producing good numbers of speckled perch around the Hour Glass and Candler Point, 10”-12” specks are common.
10’ of water depth is best while using a slip cork rigged with a minnow set at 6’-7’. Lake Kissimmee Locker 8 or 9 in 12’-14’ of water is the key. Also with a slip cork rigged at 7’-9’.Some deeper pad lines with 7’-8’ of water jigging a chartreuse 1/16 oz gig with a white grub. It’s producing slightly larger specks. Tiger Lake is producing some very large specks 12”-16”--specks are not out of the question! There are 2 marked brush piles in 12’ of waterone on the North end and one on the South end of the lake. Try white jigs 1/8 oz with a triple tail white grub or a slip cork rig set at 7’ for best results. Lake Rosalie is producing some of the biggest slabs you will ever see. Nighttime in 15’ of water with a minnow and slip cork rig set at 7’-11’ is your best bet. Daytime long line trolling a white Roadrunner tipped by a minnow in 15’ of water Lake Kissimmee is real good for the big bluegill and shellcrackers. Your best spots: Brahm Island on the the North side grass line, Gobbler Ridge, Eagles Nest, and Lemon Point around a heavy pad are going to be your best bets. forward cast water haul, flogging the water and scaring fish was a good possibility. What I asked the new angler to do was let the line land, not fish that cast, then gently cast again as soon as possible. A water haul on the back cast can be done at a different tempo, as it has less chance of scaring fish. When he began getting the feel of his line pulling against his back cast, the line was generally on the water about the amount of time it takes an accomplished angler to secure the line and begin to strip in. My phrase that helped this particular learner get that timing was, “Let the line land… now cast again.” After we got that timing down, like actors who no longer need the script, my next thought was to get him using that tension to slip line. So, I added the instruction, “Let go and grab (the line.)” to the end of his newly powerful back cast. With practice, the back cast gradually became more a question of timing, so I changed my instruction to a quiet, “Start a new cast now.” His ability to slip line on the back cast developed, leading to one more hurdle; shooting line on the forward cast. At first, I directed him to, “let it go.” While he developed the ability to shoot thirty feet, holding the system in his rod hand only, led to catching one lily pad and missing one strike. Like a director hoping that “A bad rehearsal means a good performance.” I ensured him that these were good problems to have, and added that he should hold the fly line in an ok sign on the shoot. With the new found feel of the extra weight of fly line, the new A moment on the water, a bit more line star was able to learn to carry line to cast,Dynamicarts.byz for a couple false casts. Before his spotlight was half way up the eastern sky, extra false casts were forgotten, a shoot was developing, and a first fish on the fly, a small but memorable bluegill, was caught.
Watching my client during a late summer bass trip, I noted a common beginner’s casting hurdle, and another-path solution occurred to me; Let the line land on the water in front before lifting the next back cast. This Presentation Haul might be useful to guides, instructors or DIY casters. In that cool morning, the eager new angler muscled the rod back and forth in a narrow crescent with only a short ribbon of fly line beyond the tip. While sitting close to him in the drift boat, I had to make a conscious effort to watch the line in the air, but I could note that there was not enough resistance to pull more line out. As we were on uncooperative still water, and he was inclined to stepping on his line, a few common suggestions fell flat as a jumping mullet. So, like a Broadway director helping new actors be successful in early rehearsals, first I told him what to do in real time. As many new casters do, he was making too many false casts, so when he started a forward cast I would urge, “Let it land.” Then when I saw the fly line settling down I would say, “Smoothly pick it up.” For the first five or so attempts, he would delay the next back cast too long, losing the chance at pseudo-false casting, and missing the success. As I made short explanations, and pointed out his small successes at picking up the line as soon as it settled, he began to get the timing of the presentation cast. In making what is essentially a
