t’s snook season in Florida, and despite a closure to harvest for much of the state’s west coast, the next couple months offer great action in the world’s best location to target the state’s most iconic inshore/ nearshore gamefish. Snook strike aggressively, fight hard and grow large—into the 20and 30-pound range of true slob snook. The Florida state record weighed 45.75 pounds. It was caught by Heather Lynn Conners near Sebastian in 2015. But even the slot fish—those in the 28- to 33-inch range you’re allowed to keep one of—will test your gear. It’s one of the most explosive and exciting gamefish on the planet. Snook are extremely temperature sensitive, and tactics vary according to the season. From the beaches and nearshore, where they spend their summers, they will move over the next few months seeking warmer water in sheltered winter haunts. First, you’ll find them in deep water adjacent to the shallow flats. Then, driven by cooling sea temps, they’ll push all the way up into the creeks and rivers, residential canals, warm water discharge from power plants, upper estuaries, and anywhere they can find suitable water conditions. The harsher the winter, the more pronounced the move. Fall through winter is the time when big, line-snapping snook will hunker down in areas that might seem highly unlikely to the uninformed. With the mild winters of the last decade, much has been made of the northward spread of snook. A tropical species, they historically thrived only on the southern coasts of Florida, up to about to about Sebastian in the Atlantic and Tampa in the Gulf. However, in recent years, snook have set up shop farther north, in areas that would have been unheard of a decade ago. These days, it’s possible to target snook at Homosassa and farther north along the Nature Coast of the Gulf and up toward Jacksonville in the Atlantic. They have also shown up much farther north. This summer, Coastal Angler Magazine reported on a juvenile snook caught in a cast net way up in Winyah Bay, South Carolina. First timers seeking to do battle with snook should hire a captain. Along with being big and strong, large female snook are notoriously smart and usually require specialized tackle, techniques and a good deal of patience. Their tendency to hole up in the structure of mangroves, rocks and bridge and pier pilings makes break-offs common, and the expertise of a good guide increases your chances of actually landing one. The good news is, snook have been relatively unmolested by anglers during the closed season of the last three months. Now is as good a time as any to fool a big cow nosed into the current under some residential canal dock. They feed best in low light of the early mornings and late evenings when there’s a rising or falling tide. The stronger tides around the new and full moons are optimal for catching them. Keep that in mind when booking your trip to Florida’s snook fisheries, and you could find yourself experiencing the fishing trip of a lifetime.

made my cast; the fly dropped just on the edge of the light shining into snook-filled water. I could see my fly tracking nearly perfectly as it passed in front of several nice fish waiting for unsuspecting prey. Then the fly swam into darkness without a glance from the linesiders. I continued stripping so as to pick the fly up and cast again. Suddenly my line came tight. I made the strip-set to an explosion, as a 3-foot tarpon erupted from the water, crashing into the dock and throwing my fly amidst a shower of scales and water. That night changed my thoughts on fly fishing forever.
When it comes down to it, sight fishing is the way to go for me. Unfortunately, I don’t have the luxury of a guide to pole me around the flats of Marco Island, but I have found that at night the docks hold all kinds of fish from snook to tarpon, snapper to trout, and they usually are open to feeding on a fly. Of course there are some things to keep in mind. First, stealth is everything. I like to approach using my electric motor and make sure I keep my distance. Many fish will hang at the edge of the light in the shadows, as was the case of that tarpon. In fact, I’ve caught many just out of the shadows at night. Boat position is also critical. You need to be far enough away to not spook any of the fish, seen or unseen. You also need a good casting angle to the fish. That means getting your fly in front of them and having it work past them in a natural way. I’ll use the electric motor to keep me in position. This also gives me the advantage of moving away from the dock when a large fish is hooked and trying to pull me into barnacle-covered pilings. When there are a lot of fish present, I often anchor or stake up to let things settle. It also gives me time to retie leaders between fish. Now that you are in position, what do you use? A majority of my fish have been caught on a white Clouser. All-black Clousers create a highly visible silhouette and are deadly, as well. Either emulates the ever-present glass minnows. Of late, I’ve upped the size of my flies and have found that larger baitfish patterns with bigger profile often get seen easier and thus get more takers. Above all, be respectful. When you find someone kind enough to leave those fish-attracting lights on, always do the right thing. Never go on the dock, and keep quite. Much of this fishing is done late at night, and dock owners who turn their lights off will tell you it’s because of noisy fishermen. FLORIDA SCALLOP REPORT: PASCO COUNTY DOMINATES

S
calloping season is a big deal on Florida’s Gulf Coast. Every year during short and carefully managed seasons, divers and snorklers are set free to harvest these tasty little morsels along a nearly 800mile stretch of coastline in state waters from Gulf County to Pasco County. Beginning in July and stretching through September, the open season dates vary across five regions determined by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. Some years, picking up a limit of bay scallops out of grassy shallows is as easy as an Easter egg hunt. This summer many scallopers were asking, “Where are the scallops?”

The normally predictable Crystal River and Homosassa scallop grounds weren’t as predictable or productive this year as in years past. Some reports indicate the bulk of productive scallop grounds in those areas were in exceptionally deep waters this year. Experts explain that the normal west to easterly storms that drive scallops into easily accessible shallow waters did not occur this year. But wait; News Flash, scallops certainly showed up on the southern end of the state’s scalloping waters. In Pasco County, Fla.—the region aptly known as Florida’s Sports Coast—our editors quickly limited out in 3 feet of water and found these waters to be exceptionally productive at every drop. Whether it was the 25-year harvest closure or favorable currents, Pasco County’s limited open season was a must-dive on Florida’s west coast this year. The 2019 season marked the second year in a row that FWC opened the scallop season for Pasco County, and nature certainly supported the decision. Proving to be an unbeatable destination for bay scallops—as evidenced in fistfuls—Florida’s Sports Coast’s rich scallop beds turned out to be the perfect place to score the tasty saltwater bivalves. It is very exciting to see what Pasco County’s continued seasons have in store. In anticipation of continued growth in popularity with the returned underwater adventure, Pasco County Parks, Recreation and Natural Resources is concentrating efforts to expand and improve county boat ramps to provide more trailer parking and better launch experiences for both local and out-of-town scallopers. Moving forward, Pasco County’s annual scallop season will start the third Friday in July and last for 10 days. 2019 LIONFISH
CHALLENGE UPDATE
I
n mid-August, FWC released an update on its 2019 Lionfish Challenge, and the numbers are pretty impressive. Since the event opened with Lionfish Removal and Awareness Day on May 18, 304 people had registered for the challenge and 127 had submitted harvested lionfish (113 recreational, 14 commercial). A total of 15,367 lionfish had been removed from Florida waters. The Lionfish Challenge rewards lionfish harvesters with prizes for their lionfish removals. This year, participants who submit the largest and smallest lionfish may be eligible to receive up to $3,000 in cash prizes thanks to support from sponsors: American Sportfishing Association, Yamaha Motor Company, Marine Industries Association of Palm Beach County and National Marine Manufacturers Association. All qualified participants (submission of 25 lionfish or 25 pounds for commercial) will be entered in drawings. he fishing report from northwest Costa Rica is smokin’ hot. The FishingNosara team ran 70 trips in July and was in peak form during the white-hot month of August. The team scored several sweet marlins, backed up with 41 sailfish releases and 104 yellowfin tunas. They were pumped to report that multiple 100-plus-pound yellowfins have been caught recently. These mega-fish come around every summer, but this year the team perfected the tackle and tactics to bring in the biggest of the bunch. These monster yellowfin tuna catches break the Internet every time we post photos. panga Adventurer has the fishing tool of a boat twice her size and a big bad attitude to match. This season we added a bottom machine, live tuna tuba and outriggers. In late July, cubera snappers were the headliners of a haul that also included yellowfin and a few roosterfish releases. Capt. Fico on the Explorer has earned his nickname of El Brujo (the witch) by conjuring big fish for his clients. Yellowfin tunas are always a staple this time of year, but a big surprise is the presence of big dorados. Either they are early arriving or lingering from the spring. Adding variety to the filet bag were big red groupers, which are amazing to eat and fun to catch. Some folks plan their Costa Rica fishing trip months in advance, but others walk into the office on a whim and book a trip for that day, as did angler Bradley Goss. Capt. Alex on the Harvester delivered the goods for this Oklahoma angler in the form of a 190-pound yellowfin tuna. The Marlin action was intense on the 32-footers Wanderer and Discoverer. Bob Templeton turned in the performance of a lifetime on July 9; Capt. Carlos reported two marlin releases on the big battleship Discoverer. They scored another amazing blue marlin release on July 10 with angler Michael Bosse and his crew. Then San Antonio angler Jim Jordan got a massive marlin release they scored on July 12. That’s four marlin releases in a three-day span. It is no exaggeration that Capt. William and the Wanderer ran more trips last year than any boat in all of Central America. Jacksonville angler David Sohm and his group scored a triple dorado hook-up, with a combined haul of 120 pounds. That’s a lot of mahi filets! Also, angler Mark Wing and his family scored the fish-of-a-lifetime on July 19, with Master Capt. William releasing a blue marlin. HOW TO PICK A HOOK

T
oday’s anglers are the beneficiaries of great strides made in hook manufacturing over the last few decades. Besides being sharper and stronger than they were in generations past, hooks are now available in a wider range of styles than ever before. But with variety comes the need to choose, and many fishermen are unable to comb through the multitudes of hooks to find the one that best suits their needs. If you are one of those anglers who could use a little guidance when it comes to hook selection, this primer will help you sort through the hook hoopla to find the right hook for the job. The first decision is whether you should be using circle hooks or J-hooks. Circle hooks don’t need the manual hookset that J-hooks require, but they also aren’t very effective on fish that tend to nibble at bait. If you fish for nibblers such as sheepshead, blackfish or bluegills, then circles aren’t for you. There is also the reality that circle hooks tend not to set if the fish sits still after swallowing the bait, so don’t use them unless you are fishing in a current or the fish are in an active mood. J-hooks do a better job on fish that move around less. Shank length is an underrated but critical factor in hook selection. Fish with cavernous mouths—such as largemouth bass and snook—should never be pursued using short-shank hooks. With hook eye and point being nearly in the same plane, the two parts can interfere with each other on the hookset, making them a poor choice for fish that have a gentle curvature to their mouth. These hooks do well on fish with narrow, beak-like mouths, such as tuna and wahoo, but they should be avoided when targeting anything with a wide mouth. Many of these hooks are marketed simply as “live-bait hooks,” but if your target has a big mouth, your hook should not have a short shank. Your hook size should match the bait you are using in a way that is conducive to natural presentation. A giant 10/0 hook won’t get many strikes if your bait is a three-inch shrimp; a 2/0 beak or octopus hook is probably a better match. The hook should be big and strong enough to hook and hold your target fish, but not so big that it inhibits the movement of your bait. Many specialty hooks have features made for specific baits and methods of fishing. Hooks with baitholder barbs are great for holding softer baits such as clams and worms. Hooks with up-turned or down-turned eyes are great if you prefer to snell hooks rather than attach them via a knot above the eye. Pay attention to the design of the hooks you select, because each style was made with a precise goal in mind. Whatever hook you choose, always make sure it is razor sharp before you begin fishing.

The Scenic Sumter Heritage Byway Organization began as a Community Action Group in March 2009 in partnership with the Sumter County Chamber of Commerce with the express purpose of improving the southern entrance to Sumter County, therefore enhancing the visitor experience to the National Cemetary. The Veteran’s Memorial Hwy was designated soon afterwards, and pursuit of a Florida Scenic Hwy designation began. A Corridor Advocacy Group (CAG) began meeting with the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) District Five Scenic Highways Coordinator in order to pursue the “scenic” classification for a series of roads within Sumter County that encompass the communities of Webster, Bushnell, Sumterville, Lake Panasoffkee, Carlson, Rutland and the surrounding areas. The roads that comprise the 62-mile Byway traverse rural communities, pastoral farmlands, cattle ranches, parklands, lush hardwood hammock, and floodplain forests within the Withlacoochee River Watershed. The corridor highlights the scenic view and rich heritage of Sumter County through byway travel. Attractions along the Byway include the General James Van Fleet Trail State Park, Richloam Wildlife Management Area (WMA), Dade Battlefield Historic State Park, Florida National Cemetary, Lake Panasoffkee, Withlacoochee River and the Half Moon Wildlife Management Area. The Scenic Sumter Heritage Byway Organization is a grass roots organization committed to altering their vision for the byway based on a multi-year work plan. The SSHBO consists of volunteers who are passionate about the heritage, traditions, recreational and scenic resources fo their community. They work with their partners to showcase these resources, educate the community and advocate for community-based decision making that protects and enhances these resources. PANA VISTA LODGE FISHING REPORT With the above normal rainfall in July and August the water level is high. With that being said, the river bluegill and shellcrackers have moved up the outlet to get out of the river water. The mouth of the outlet has been producing some nice catches of panfish. The bass fishing has been a little more difficult. The fish have relocated and the have more territory to travel!!! Best bets for September: Fishing may be a little tougher than usual due to the high water. Fish early and later for the bass. When the water starts to drop it should really pick up. There is a lot of fish still around shallow, but they go lethargic the higher the sun gets and the hotter the water is. Which will be hovering around the high 80’s to low 90’s! Any of the outer island points that have good tidal flow around them have a good chance of holding fish. Troll and fan cast your spoons, weedless jerkbaits and topwater plugs around the points for
good hookups. Or, anchor off a good point with tidal flow and toss out a favorite piece of chunk bait such as cut mullet or ladyfish. For live bait utilize a frisky pinfish or shrimp. If they’re there, you’ll know it within 15 to 20 minutes. Or, like my dad used to say, “about 1 Cigarette”. If not, pick up and move to your next point. For the trout, your best bet is going to be to head out to deeper water, say, 8’ to 12’,watch your depth finder for good bottom, and set up a drift. These trout find this deeper water in September to be cooler, there’s more bait supply, there’s less traffic, and safer conditions from predators even if it’s dead calm. Best tactic for these trout at this depth is to naturally just utilize a ¼ oz. Or 3/8 oz. lead jighead in white or red, in conjunction with your favorite color plastic, just so long its white, in the 3” shrimp or paddle tail grub. Of course, you need to have about 3’ of florocarbon leader spliced into your braided or mono running line. It keeps you stealthy and is more abrasion resistant. You may lose a little terminal tackle in the structure at this depth, but you have to get down at or right near the bottom to be effective with the hookups. At the same time, you’ll definitely score on some grouper and nice seabass. You won’t be disappointed. Hope to see ya on the water. Submitted By: Capt. I can give you a handful of lakes that will consistently produce good fish day after day, then you show up and you KNOW the fish are there, and they are being obstinate and do not want to eat. Then the next day you’re heading out and run past those fish to another spot they are on a feeding frenzy again, so you whip back around... go figure. But, that’s why we are thankful the calendar says September so that we have Saturday college football to give us a break from “the grind as it were.” So, let’s get started out in Olde World Florida on the Kissimmee Chain fishing & Son Team on Lake out of Camp Mack, a Guy Harvey Mari- Father Toho for the “Fishing For Our na, Lodge, and RV Resort. We have been Troops” event in July. enjoying a good stretch of decent lake levels below the Lake Toho lock with all the recent rains, but the Army Corps of Engineers is still trying to bring the lakes down. Pray for more rain & that Mother Nature keeps up for a few more months because with the water up, the fishing has been awesome! We’re talking about incredible “offshore” fishing in 3’-5’ over shellbeds and scattered hydrilla with eel grass and it is honest to God so much fun if you like an early morning topwater bite then switching to swimjigs, chatterbaits, Gambler EZ swimmers, flukes, etc. I’m always locked & loaded with an array of baits rigged & ready to start our days out here. I like all the afore mentioned baits lined up, but also in different sizes and colors because again, these fish can change on a daily basis. To simplify, I’ll have “smaller” white or white & chartreuse baits along with bigger gold or gold & black baits until we know if the bass are keying in on shiners or shad.
In Winter Haven on the South Chain and many of the smaller standalone lakes we’re still fishing out deep, deep like out in the middle of the lakes when you find schools of bait. And just because we are fishing in up to 30ft of water does not mean I won’t have topwaters and flukes rigged-up for the first 2-3 hours of the day. Here I don’t over analyze: natural color topwaters, flukes, smaller swimbaits, jerkbaits, and crankbaits. Because it is dealing with a creature with a brain the size of a pea just be versatile and it’s “normally” easy to figure out the puzzle. KISSIMMEE CHAIN FISHING FORECAST

For all you anglers who want to fish the Kissimmee Chain this Fall, if nothing else, it’s going to be challenging. You can expect over the next few months for above normal water levels on all the lakes in Central Florida. The above normal water level is going to scatter the fish into patterns that I have not seen since 2004. For bass anglers, key in on the moving water in the rivers, canals and creeks. The mouth of these areas can be very productive in the morning and evening as the bass will tend to school up. It’s hard to beat a lipless crankbait in blue or gold chrome. During the day, fish the creeks, canals and rivers going upstream for two reasons. The number one reason to fish heading upstream is because you cannot control the speed of the boat when moving with the current. The second reason to fish heading upstream is this is the way the bass swim. By fishing upstream, you can come up behind the fish. Throw your bait ahead of the bass and let it drift back into their face; Explosive Results! It really doesn’t matter if you like to cast or flip, you can get them either way. If you want to cash in on plate-size gills, try fishing the peppergrass or eelgrass with worms or cricketts. Wyatt’s Formula The Next Step for New Anglers
CENTRAL FLORIDA FRESHWATER FLY FISHING REPORT

As novice fly anglers we carry boxes full of enthusiasm and positive thoughts. As we begin to develop, we learn new skills like; casting twenty or thirty feet, purchasing a selection of flies from our local fly shop, selecting one of those, and tying it on to go fishing. With those simple skills we begin catching fish. But, abilities of that level don’t guarantee we’ll independently catch those great fish that we’ve always admired. To help new anglers achieve those elusive goals, Allen Wyatt has arranged thirty years of instructing into this easy formula.
Dreaming + Backward Planning = Preparation for fishing success After getting control of those basics, your next step is to dream about what fish you want to catch. Of course, we’ve all spent many sleepless nights dreaming about catching the perfect fish in the greatest water, but Wyatt explains that this step has some details. “Once the new angler decides what fish species they want to catch, they still need to decide where, and how they want to catch that fish.” A Colorado largemouth bass is not quite the same as a green monster from Lake Okeechobee. And Hawaiian bonefish are distant from their Biscayne Bay cousins. So let your mind flow, fill in all the details of your dream; fish species, size, location, what tactic you want to use.
Conditions: Good Surface Temp: 87F Clarity: Slightly Tannic 20-24 inches Guide Tip: The 1-2 combo that has been working as of late is working the shallows early with a dragonfly dry fly. Then swapping the topwater for the classic streamer the bass bully in either black or chartreuse probing the deeper water searching for the bite in deeper water. Shade and hyacinth patches are great starting points to find bass during the warmer parts of the day. Techniques: When fishing topwater flies for bass a slightly shorter and stiffer leader is ideal. This allows for accurate cast near the grass patches and docks. A trick that we borrow from the trout fishing world is a double dry fly rig. Tying off a second dragonfly off the bend of the hook of the first fly allows you to throw both flies. This is a great way to try and double up on fish waiting in the shade. Using a slightly lighter tippet on the second fly allows you to salvage one fly if you get snagged. After the topwater bite starts to fade switching to a bass bully streamer allows you to get down and reach the fish in deeper water. When selecting the color of the streamer try to consider the water clarity. If your fishing in more stained water a dark fly works best. If the water just muddied up from an influx of rain chartreuse is the ticket. For our clear water lakes switching to a more natural color like olive works the best. The panfish are eating topwater still with small micro poppers working well. When fishing subsurface small wooly buggers and dragonfly nymphs pick up those larger more wary TB’s. Water Forecast: The lake levels have continued rising.The Peace is at above average levels, the Econ is at average levels, the Myakka is at above average levels,the Hillsborough is at average levels, the Withlacoochee is at high levels as well. If you were to look at the walls in any sports coach’s office, you’ll see some version of the slogan; Dreams don’t work unless you do! The same is true for angling; We must add some backward planning to our fishing dreams. Wyatt, who founded the Andy Thornal Fly Fishing Schools in 1989, tells his customers, “Your fishing situation will tell you which rod and reel outfits to acquire, which flies will be best, and how to use them.” The correct outfit to take brook trout under tunnels of Rhododendron in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, will leave you unprepared for the wide open and windy conditions in Yellowstone National Park. Wyatt, who is developing plans for a hosted trip to his dream fishing; chasing Atlantic salmon, with streamers on two handed rods in northern Europe, says to begin by getting the correct weight of fly rod and then a line to match. For the most part “overlining” is no longer needed. In some cases, leaders are vital, and you must get the correct length, diameter and strength. Then you can return to the joy of selecting flies. We all have images of the flies we will use, but Wyatt coaches “Color, and size are as important as type.” Getting the precise flies can be done by contracting with your fly shop for custom flies, or by learning to tie on your own. Calculating this simple formula will guide you to those next fish. In your dreaming, remember to include photographing your catch. We love to share the pictures.

By Capt. Randy Cnota his year, anglers heading out of C-Quarters Marina in Carrabelle, Fla.—in quest of the winning kingfish—were blessed with some beautiful weather and light seas. Afternoon winds whipped up some waves, but it was a welcome relief to the heat. While the weather was cooperative, most teams found the bite to be a bit tough… at least for the bigger kings.

Capt. Page Pitman, of Crawfordville, Fla., steered his winning team “Bill Collector” to a second victory in three years by concentrating efforts, again, on finding the right live bait and presenting it with a slow bump-trolling method. Jessica Welch hauled in their winning catch, a 37.4-pound king to secure both the team’s win and this year’s Lady Angler title. Capt. Pitman said this win was very special to him. In the 2017 Shootout, his son Gage hauled in the winning fish for the team. A few months later, tragedy struck and Gage passed away. Winning the tournament this year without Gage by his side was a bitter-sweet reminder of better times fishing with his son. This kind of tragedy should make us all take pause and reflect on how very special each moment with friends and family really is. Jada Bedford, fishing with Team Freedom Creek, hauled in a 28-pound king to secure Youth Angler honors and a fourth-place finish for her team. Before Justin Cahoon left the event, he hitched a new Nautic Star bay boat to his truck after winning it in the raffle. Not a bad return on his $100 investment. This event raised $43,520 for the Leukemia Research Foundation, bringing the total amount raised to a whopping $1,043,645 to date! The foundation has made great strides toward treating blood cancers. A new treatment called CAR T-cell therapy has been approved by the FDA, and Medicare has come on board to help cover this expensive gene therapy. CAR T-cell is proving to be very effective in blood cancers. It involves removing genes from the body, re-engineering them and returning them to the patient. Kevin Radelet, the foundation’s executive director described it as a game of Pac Man going on inside the patient where the re-engineered genes attack the cancer. This is great news, and it’s a direct result of the efforts of everyone that conducts, supports and participates in this event and others like it. Come out to compete, spectate or help support this event in any way you can. You’ll be glad you did. Next year’s event will be held Aug. 1-2, so come on out and let’s go fishing for a cure! It’s a great time, a great cause and it all happens in a beautiful place.

Bringing The Dead (Bait) Back To life

n case you don’t already know and do this, here’s a trick that can save a day in the absence of live bait. If you’re going bottom fishing and pinfish, sardines, pogies or the others are hard to find with a cast net or sabiki, hedge your bets by keeping a couple dozen fresh or frozen baits about the diameter of a softball, or larger, in the cooler. Even in freshwater, when live gizzard shad or skipjacks are nowhere to be found, a box of frozen baits can still entice catfish, striped bass and others. Dropping a whole dead bait down will get bites, but if you take a minute to “butterfly” them, these once dead baitfish come back to life in the current. No grouper or big snapper can resist them when presented properly. Grunts pinkies and seabass will hammer at it, and eventually get the hook, but grouper or anything else with a large enough mouth will simply inhale it. I’ve seen times when the bite would shut down, even with live bait, and a fresh butterflied beeliner (vermillion snapper) would get bit instantly. The two fillets of any given baitfish attached to the head, without the backbone and dorsal fins are just a little too much to resist for the big meat-eaters. Granted, it’s also big shark candy, but as Popeye would say, “You pays your money, you takes your chances.” Butterflying a bait is very simple. Anyone can go out and catch a pile of grunts, pinkies and seabass with small cut bait, but it’s no coincidence that the people who specifically go fishing for grouper are the ones that come home with the “brown fish” in the box. Don’t hesitate to butterfly a snapper or anything else you thought was once too large for bait. On the bottom, the smaller fish will hammer away at the two larger fillets, and out of nowhere a big gag
or red grouper will finish it off. A 1 ½-pound beeliner, pinkie or Spanish mackerel is the perfect candidate for this job. When you feel the little ones banging on it, sit tight and don’t set the hook. Wait for the big bite; there will be no question when it gets eaten instead of pecked at. Big butterflied mullet, spots and croakers are extremely effective inshore and nearshore for red or black drum. In freshwater, a butterflied bream, perch, crappie or other panfish is perfect for big catfish. To butterfly a bait, start at the tail and fillet each side up to just behind the head and out the gut area. Then grab the tail and break the backbone out just behind the head.
