T
he rod doubled, and it was all Jack could do to hang on until his big brother Jimmy got over to help. Then our friend Jacob grabbed on too. Jacob was on the front grip of the rod, Jack in the middle— reeling for all he was worth—and Jimmy on the rod handle. It was quite a sight as they worked together to reel something up from the dark blue 115 feet below. They managed to get the fish up for a bit, but then the rod bowed hard. Now it was pulling line and leaving the boat behind. With a magnificent pull, the line suddenly went slack. Jack’s fish had been sharked! All that was left was a head. The fight hadn’t lasted long, but man it was exciting! This was on a business trip from Georgia through central and south Florida, during which I hoped to squeeze in some fishing. In speaking
with a customer about Purge Right purging compounds, the conversation inevitably turned to fishing. I told him I wanted to catch peacock bass and Mayan cichlid. He informed me that the canal across the street had both. That was great news! Before heading to Florida, I contacted my friend and Florida local Chris Dean. He wanted to fish, too. My friend Eric Crowley, who guides in Georgia but fishes a lot in Florida, clued me in to some good locations. We were set. I met Chris and his son Jack at the canal, and we caught Mayan cichlids until dark. We had a blast. It’s like bream fishing back home, only much more colorful. That evening over supper, when the boat Chris and I hoped to fish from fell through, my dreams of catching giant snook vanished like ice cream on a hot day. I spent the next half hour texting and calling captains. Nobody had any openings the next day. Later, Chris’s other son, Jimmy, called with some intel on bank spots where we might catch peacock or snook. Jimmy was MIA the next morning, but when he finally called he had come through in a big way. His buddy Jacob had a boat ready to go chase snook. All five of us—Jimmy, Jacob, Chris, Jack and I— loaded up and headed through the mangrove jungle with a tank full of bait. As we passed the inlet, we noticed the waves didn’t look too bad seaward. We decided to ride out and see how it was. So glad we did! We caught the jack that was sharked as well as several snappers, triggers, cobia, amberjacks, and a remora that latched onto the side of the boat when we tried to release it. I also caught my first African pompano. As I drove back to Georgia the next day, I daydreamed about my next business trip to West Palm. I hope Florida folks realize how good they’ve got it. n early 2018, FWC awarded $250,000 to five organizations to research and develop methods to remove lionfish from deep-water habitat. Also, the National Marine Fisheries Service has approved a permit to set out 100 cages to study whether traps can be effective. Lionfish can be found in reefs, mangroves and seagrass meadows. They are voracious eaters that consume more than 50 different species, including shrimp, grouper and lobster. They have no natural predators in the Atlantic, and some scientists believe lionfish are so widespread that we may not be able to reverse their effect. Florida has taken steps to address the lionfish problem. Among the measures are a prohibition on the import of lionfish for aquariums, a ban on lionfish in aquaculture, yearly lionfish fishing derbies, a phone app to collect data and raise awareness of the dangers of lionfish and encouraging a market for their tasty meat. The FWC awards went to the University of Florida to field test strategies for harvesting lionfish in deep water using non- containment curtain traps. The Reef Environmental Education Foundation will assess modified lobster trap and curtain trap designs and assess whether sound can be used as an attractant. American Marine Research Company will work to develop an underwater drone that can be used to control lionfish populations. R3 Digital Sciences will develop fish trap extension kits for existing commercial spiny lobster traps to convert them into smart traps capable of targeting lionfish in depths greater than 130 feet. The Atlantic Lionshare Ltd. will develop a remotely-operated vehicle called the Reef Sweeper to harvest lionfish from beyond recreational diving depths.

he Holidays are here! In the rush of constant holiday shopping and festive parties, it’s sometimes challenging to remember why we’re officially celebrating and what the season is ultimately about. So, we at Pura Vida Divers thought we’d recommend a few alternative ocean-related “gift” ideas to keep with the true giving spirit of the holidays and aid in local conservation. Our first charity of choice for you Florida ocean lovers is Friends of Our Florida Reefs. Formed in 2015, Friends of Our Florida Reefs assists and enhances the critical efforts of the FDEP to conserve and protect the southeast section of the Florida Reef Tract. Their goal is to work as a dedicated citizen support organization “filling significant budget gaps, preparing for rapid response to emergencies and self-initiate direct action, education and outreach.” We like this charity because of the direct local impact to our Florida reefs and the local community. We pledge this holiday season, for every new Facebook “like”
during the month of December, Pura Vida Divers will donate $1 to Friends of Our Florida Reefs. This is an easy way to participate in charitable giving this year and only takes a quick click on your computer at this link: https://www.facebook.com/Pura.Vida.Divers. You can also give directly to Friends of Our Florida Reefs via their website in the form of donations, memberships, corporate memberships and vehicle donation options: http://www.floridareef.org/. Additionally, we recommend Project AWARE. As their mission statement proclaims, “Project AWARE is a global movement of scuba divers protecting our ocean planet one dive at a time. Focused on the critical issues of sharks in peril and marine debris, Project AWARE empowers thousands to work together for a clean, healthy and abundant ocean planet.” Pura Vida Divers adopted Phil Foster Park several years ago and more recently adopted Blue Heron Bridge through Project AWARE’s Adopt a Dive Site Program. As such, we host quarterly volunteer shoreline and underwater cleanups where we report all our marine debris findings to Project AWARE. The data we collect helps bridge the gap in knowledge and influences long-term waste management solutions at local, national and international levels. Our next organized cleanup is Saturday, Dec. 15. Check-in at Phil Foster Park begins at 9 a.m. Alternately, contribute directly to Project AWARE by purchasing a membership or giving a donation via their website at: http://www.projectaware.org/. Or, take any Scuba Diving class with us and we will donate $10 on your behalf through the 100% AWARE program! In addition to the newest iPhone, LOL doll, or plastic who-seewhats-it, give the gift of ocean conservation and feel empowered with your conscientious choice. Plus, donations to both organizations are tax deductible so you get a little holiday gift for yourself as well! Happy shopping to you, and if you’re in the neighborhood and want to come join us at our festive holiday party, please stop by Dec. 7 at 6:30 p.m. for food, drinks and general merriment!

Blue and white marlin, sailfish, swordfish and many other species inhabit these areas. Debi Gabriel, of Boneafide Charter Company in the lower Florida Keys, said the Keys offer unrivaled outdoor experiences as well as the opportunity to educate visitors about the principles of sustainable recreation. “We became involved with the Blue Star Fishing Guide program because we are the eyes and ears of the Florida Keys sanctuary,” she said. “Teaching people about how important it is to conserve, preserve and educate is what we feel needs to be done in order to sustain our precious fishery.” Captains and guides in the program receive online training that covers general education about the sanctuary, its diverse habitats and its By Kennedy Gullatte fisheries. They also learn best practices that include using gear suited to the fish targeted and employing proper techniques and for release. The Blue Star Fishing Guide program recognizes charter captains ket their business as a sanctuary partner, plus educational materials to who are committed to sustainable fishing practices and educating their share with clients on their vessel. Annual evaluations ensure compliance customers about resource protection in Florida Keys National Marine with program criteria. he Atlantic Salmon Federation (ASF) is calling on Canada to enact new management measures to reduce the southern Gulf of St. Lawrence striped bass population. “It’s important that Canadian government leaders from across the country understand what’s happening in the Gulf of St. Lawrence and especially on the Miramichi River,” said ASF president Bill Taylor. “DFO has taken incremental steps, but more is needed to restore balance for all species.” Striped bass are native to the southern Gulf of St. Lawrence and were once considered threatened. All fisheries were closed by 2000, and a recovery target of 31,200 spawning adults was established. That goal has now been exceeded for eight consecutive years. Recent estimates show between 500,000 and 2-million striped bass spawn annually in the Miramichi. “We have clearly shown this concentration of striped bass is having severe negative effects on wild Atlantic salmon,” said Taylor. Since 2003, ASF and partners like the Miramichi Salmon Association have been tracking juvenile Atlantic salmon, known as smolt, in three Gulf of St. Lawrence rivers. Initially, 65-75 percent of tagged smolt survived migration through the estuary of each river. Survival rates on the Restigouche and Cascapedia rivers have remained stable, but a downward trend began in 2011 on the Miramichi, coinciding with the sharp rise in striped bass. Less than 10 percent of smolt tagged in the Northwest Miramichi River survived to reach the Gulf of St. Lawrence in 2017. The lower Northwest Miramichi is where the entire southern Gulf of St. Lawrence striped bass population gathers to spawn each spring. At the same time, smolt are migrating to the ocean.
It's been an unbelievable year and we would like to say a big "Thank You" to all our customers and dealers for helping make it happen! Let's make 2019 even better!

ust back from the Lauderdale Boat show and it was great to see old friends and get a chance to talk about our fishing here in the Islamorada Backcountry, I was at the Contender Boats booth and got a chance to check out some of the new tackle coming to our local tackle shops. As soon as I returned to the keys an old client called and asked if I had been sail fishing yet & I had not, but we loaded up the live well with pilchards and the weather was nice so we took my bay boat out to the edge and started live chumming. I am happy to report the first and second sail of the season have been released off my boat, just as we were getting the hook out of the first fish the other rod went off and we were back at it chasing down a jumping sailfish. I love getting out on the reef in my bay boat when the weather allows. On the other side of the bridges in the backcountry the snook fishing has been pretty good with a few redfish as well, I have been mostly using live pilchards and fishing creek mouths or moats around the mangrove islands in the backcountry and Everglades National Park. For this type of fishing I like a 7ft spinning rod with beaded 20lb line and a 30lb leader of fluorocarbon. If you are into fly-fishing try fishing down the shorelines and casting as close as possible to the bushes and always fish the points of the islands that’s where I find we get our best bites. While you are running out in the backcountry you will also see triple tail on the surface this time of year, they will disappear if you make noise so approach slowly, put down your power pole and cast a fly or live shrimp up current of them and you will have a great fish for supper. That’s all for now, catch ya next month. heeca Lodge & Spa announced results of its 6th Annual All American Backcountry Fishing Tournament held Nov.8-10 in Islamorada, FL. The event gathered the industry’s finest to raise funds for the local Guides Trust Foundation. In honor of Veteran’s Day, Cheeca Lodge also hosted two war heroes who competed as a team. All American anglers competed for trophies and prizes for releasing five different species of fish: snook, redfish, bonefish, tarpon and permit. Tackle divisions included fly, artificial and bait. Taking home top honors of Grand Champion Angler and Fly Division Champion Angler was Doug Dragoo of Pagosa Springs, CO, a Title Sponsor representing Abel reels. Dragoo released four bonefish, ten snook and ten redfish on fly, guided by Richard Black of Tavernier, FL. The tournament’s field of 16 anglers on 13 boats posted overall game fish totals of 80 snook, 77 redfish,16 tarpon, 23 bonefish and one 35-lb permit. The total of 197 releases during the two-day tournament included 76 on fly, 60 on artificial tackle and 61 on general tackle. The total releases more than doubled the prior tournament’s results. Grand Champion Team honors went to Paul McCulliss of Littleton, CO, and his son Brian McCulliss of Denver, CO, Title Sponsors representing McCulliss Oil & Gas. Guided by Eric Herstedt of Homestead, FL, the duo released 20 snook, 18 redfish, one bonefish and one tarpon. Paul McCulliss also eared General Division Champion Angler with nine snook, eight redfish, one tarpon and one bonefish. Second Place Team Division honors went to US Army veteran Al Hunter, Sr., from Miami, FL, and Marine Corps veteran Eric Munoz of Homestead, FL, for releasing 12 snook and five redfish guided by Captain Mike Makowski of Key Largo, FL. “It was an incredible experience to fish a tournament of this caliber in the sport fishing capital of the world and actually take home an award,” noted Hunter. Jim Bokar of Tavernier, FL, clinched Champion Angler in the Artificial Division, releasing ten snook and ten redfish. Bokar was representing Robert-James Sales, a Title Sponsor of the tournament. A 35-lb permit landed the Most Outstanding Catch and Best Photo Awards for Ken Biro of Hollywood, FL, guided by Steven Tejera of Homestead, FL. Second-place Angler Division honors went to Fred Schwaibold of Charleston, SC, for releasing ten snook, ten redfish and three bonefish, guided by Dave Denkert of Islamorada, FL. “We were honored to welcome talented anglers and guides back to experience some of the finest fishing in the Florida Keys” said General Manager Bob LaCasse. “It was rewarding to provide this opportunity to our veterans and raise funds for the Guides Trust Foundation at our newly refreshed resort.” Andy Mill, world-famous fly angler, former alpine ski racer and two-time Olympian, shared his expertise on fly fishing for tarpon at an evening reception. The tournament also featured appearances by fishing legends Stu Apte, a tournament competitor, and Sandy Moret. Moret and representatives from the Bonefish &Tarpon Trust spoke on the progress of the #NoworNeverglades initiative at the awards banquet. Title Sponsors included Robert-James Sales, Inc.; Abel Reels; Wells Fargo Bank’s Hospitality Finance Group; and McCullis Oil & Gas, Inc. Partner sponsors included Silver Kings, Costa, Tommy Bahama, Blue Marlin Jewelry, Florida Keys Brewing Company, Pasta Pantaleo, Bluefin, Mangrove Mike’s, Bacardi and Grey Goose, Deco Productions, JL Promotions, Keys Audio Party Rentals, Executive Printers of Florida, Printing Plus and the Monroe County Tourist Development Council. e’re back in the time of year where the cold fronts are rolling through every couple weeks and bringing with it more fish and people migrating south to escape the cold further north. With holiday season here things tend to get a little hectic, if you need to escape the madness look no further than the waters just offshore. Live bait fishing on the edge of the reef has been great! With catches of sailfish, yellow jack, cero mackerel, mutton snapper, blackfin tuna, king mackerel and even a few yellowfin tuna, you never know what you might see when running in on a ballyhoo shower! You’ll find these bait showers up and down the reef line in 30-100 ft of water, just look for the frigate birds and large ballyhoo schools. Casting live ballyhoo on 20lb spinning gear into the melee will produce some instant action. The patch reefs are starting to fire up again with the water temperatures cooling down, the patches in the 10-30 ft range seem to be producing the best. A simple knocker rig work great, a half ounce egg sinker and a 2/0 longshank j hook on 15lb mono gets the job done. Keep a live ballyhoo or pilchard with light wire on the surface out, there’s quite a few cero’s and yellowjacks prowling in the chumslick. A productive day for George Olmo and crew aboard the Fantastic II
Trolling around out past the edge of the reef has been producing some wintertime wahoo and football blackfins but there’s still quite a few late season mahi swimming around. Skirted ballyhoo rigged up on wire with a long leader and trolling weight is the most popular way to target the wahoo. The snapper and grouper bite on the edge is solid, with plenty of yellowtail, mutton, mangrove, black grouper, red grouper and strawberry grouper making an appearance on the dinner table. Grouper season closes beginning January 1st, so get your grouper fix while you can. The tails have been biting in the 65-85 ft range, but they can be a bit tricky in no-current situations though. Anchoring down in the 105-130 ft range is best for the grouper, soaking ballyhoo plugs, speedos or bonita chunks on the bottom will produce plenty of bites. Coming off of slow season and out of the boat yard we’re stoked to be getting back to fishing. This year we gave our 27ft center console the “HopAlong” a complete makeover. Our larger boat the “Fantastic II” a 40ft sportfish is running strong as ever, with both of the boats docked at the Holiday Inn Marina in “downtown” Key Largo. If your Santa list includes catching a sailfish, come on down to Marathon! The sailfish showed up in mid-October. Fishing for them has been consistently good ever since, and we expect it to remain so for December. Ballyhoo is the prime food source for the sailfish this time of year. Major amounts of this baitfish have been pushing out from the bayside into the Atlantic, which should hold the sailfish in and around the reef for quite some time. Mornings and evenings are the best times to target spraying sails, or all day long in cloudy conditions. Our usual midday tactic during December is to gather a bunch of live ballyhoo and put a spread out anywhere from 100 to 120 feet of water, as this is the area where the sailfish hang when not actively pursuing the ballyhoo up in The Barta group from California the shallows in 20 to 30 feet. They will snagged what is probably the biggest often attack a wayward ‘hoo that has porgy ever caught with SeaSquared wandered too far offshore. Mixed in with the sailfish, we find dolphin, blackfin tuna, wahoo and king mackerel. Not a bad bycatch when you’re sport fishing! For the wahoo and kings, we like to fish a deep bait about half way off the bottom or wherever the thermocline might be located. Pilchards and cigar minnows are best for this method. The reef will make all your Christmas dreams come true, with a bite that is on fire. Snappers, groupers, king and cero mackerel, cobias – you name it, we got it going on. The shallower patches tend to hold the most fish this time of year, due to the presence of loads of ballyhoo. You’ll find plenty of yellowtail, mangrove and mutton snapper, black, red and gag grouper all occupying the same areas. All but the yellowtails will eat a variety of live baits, such as pilchards, pinfish and ballyhoo. The ‘tails prefer cut baits or shrimp.
The snappers feed aggressively this time of year. Because of this, you need to use copious amounts of chum. On the days we find them reluctant, we spice our frozen block chum with SnapperUp and ChumDrop from Aquatic Nutrition. This spurs on the feeding activity of the snappers which, in turn, creates a frenzy behind your boat that other species can’t resist. Everything imaginable is drawn to the increased activity. Quite possibly, especially if there are ballyhoo present in your slick, you’ll even have sailfish show up. So, be sure to have a live ballyhoo ready to pitch to them for a sure-fire way to Yellowtail snapper season is liven up your snapper fishing experience. coming on strong, as evidenced On the Atlantic wrecks, there should by this catch by the Albertson be copious amounts of mutton snapper, family, from Kentucky, amberjack, kingfish and wahoo. Live baits are with SeaSquared Charters key, including ballyhoo, pilchards, pinfish and small blue runners. You can also expect to find large porgy in these zones. Shrimp is crucial for these tasty critters. Cero mackerel and mid-size kings fill out the offerings in these regions. Live ballyhoo, pilchards or small blue runners do the trick for these toothy fish. Out in Florida Bay and around the bridges, we have good action on mangrove snapper. Small live pilchards and pinfish are your best choices as well as shrimp. In the expansive grassy areas eight to ten miles out in the bay is where we also find massive amounts of Spanish mackerel. Shrimp on a jighead, small shiny spoons, small bucktails or live pilchards work best. Make sure you have a small, six- to eight-inch, trace of wire to prevent bite-offs. In the Gulf of Mexico, we expect good fishing on the wrecks for cobia, gag grouper, Goliath grouper, sharks and mangrove snapper. FREE Fishing Seminars On December 4 at the Hyatt Place in Marathon, we kick off our 2018-2019 Keys Fishing Seminar Series. The topic will be Reef Top to Bottom, and the The Emmerson group got in a little fall dolphin seminar runs from 6:30 fishing with SeaSquared Charters. They also to 8:30 pm. Admission caught blackfin and skipjack tuna is free, and we will have some great prizes and giveaways. By Joe Setzer. When I first started scuba diving, I quickly realized that it is an equipment-based activity. Without the proper equipment you can’t be an effective or safe diver. It plays a role in every aspect of your dive and at times, it can even become overwhelming. Due to the amount of equipment needed to have a safe and successful dive, some people choose to just use rental gear. Using rental gear can be cost, time and space effective. As your gear is what keeps you alive, it needs to be maintained and professionally inspected and serviced. Using rental gear saves you from the headache of making sure that everything is in working order and is safe to use. Using rentals also saves people from the high costs of purchasing their own gear and the additional costs to maintain, repair and service it. Gear is often big, heavy and abundant. Renting gear from a dive shop saves you from having an extra bag to travel with along with the fees and hassles of having large items to travel with. There are however, faults associated with using rental gear. Renting your gear often means you will not be very familiar with your equipment. Different dive centers carry different gear for rentals. There are a lot of brands on the market, and each brand has a multitude of different models. Each model has its own style and fits differently. Being comfortable in the water is extremely important. Most dives last between 30 minutes and 1 hour underwater. If you aren’t using gear that is comfortable, you won’t have the most enjoyable experience that you could have. The models also have different features and dictate things like how you connect your secondary regulator and even how you drop your weights. Features such as these are life dependent, so in an emergency you should be able to know and use your gear without looking at it. Although I don’t advise against rental gear, there are a couple of pieces of equipment that I recommend purchasing that will result in a safer and more enjoyable dive experience. As it is like the heart of your dive set up and essential for life underwater, purchasing and utilizing

your own buoyance compensator (BC) will mitigate the chances you will not know how to utilize or locate features and other attached gear. You will be knowledgeable, comfortable and familiar with the center of your equipment setup. Depending on your facial structure, a mask might be a necessity. I know it is for me! I have been diving for 10 years and have only found 2 masks that don’t hurt my face when I dive. Again, if you are not comfortable, you will not enjoy your dive! Dive computers are another piece of equipment that are life dependent and necessary to be familiar with. They also happen to be one of the more expensive equipment purchases. When it comes to diving computers, I always say to get the best one within your budget. They all have similar attributes, but some are more user friendly than others. Some have 4 buttons while others have only 1. Some computers are rechargeable (never needing a battery replacement), some are user replaceable, while others you must take into a dealer to get the battery replaced. They also may have slightly different features and functions along with multiple sizes and styles. The necessary information will be available on rental computers or ones you purchase but the ease and accessibility of this information can greatly differ if you are not familiar with the device. Renting equipment is often the most economical and practical option for many divers. It is a common practice in the dive community, especially for those who are traveling. The more equipment you are able to be familiar with and comfortable in, the more likely you are to have a safe and enjoyable dive. Your dive equipment is your lifeline underwater. If you should need to use your lifeline in an emergency, you want to be knowledgeable, comfortable and familiar. Purchasing a BC, mask and dive computer will allow you to not only enjoy your dive more, but to do so with a greater level of safety.

embers from the International Women’s Fishing Association met at the Islamorada Fishing Club Sunday, October 21st for their annual Islamorada Backcountry Tournament Captain’s meeting. Twenty-two women traveled from as far north as Wisconsin and some from Fort Lauderdale, Miami and Islamorada. The three-day tournament format where 2 different anglers fish together per boat with different local Keys fishing guides each day. This year tournament director Kim Clement added a new Fly Division where ladies that entered could only fish Fly tackle. Six ladies entered in this division with 3 designated local fishing guides that specialized in Fly fishing. 869 fish were caught and released throughout the three-day event. Anglers could only count 5 per species for scoring so more fish were actually caught and released making it to be some great fishing in the Keys! The fishing was great each day where anglers fished the waters of Everglades National Park for Redfish, Snook, Tarpon, Seatrout, Tripletail, Cobia and other species and also fished the Islamorada area for Bonefish and Permit. Each day was a great day just being out on the water, as some of the ladies said “a day on the water sure beats a day at the office.” High Point Angler on day 1 was Islamorada resident Rebecca Strain scoring 1645 points fishing with Capt. Frankie Ortiz, with angler Lisa Everett on board scoring 1625 points. High Point Angler on day 2 was Fran McKelvey scoring 1300 points with Captain Richard Black. ecember is a special month here in Key West for fishing. It is the beginning of the winter fishery with each cold front the fishing gets better and better. Cold fronts here are normally a three to four day event with the wind swinging to the northeast and the temperature dropping. It concentrates the bait on top of the reef and predators come to feed. The ballyhoo drift off the south side of the reef on the north wind and the sailfish are waiting for the easy meal. Often you will see the Sailfish racing up in to 10 to 20 feet of water to ball the ballyhoo and eat as many as they can before they race back off the reef. The sailfish won’t spend much time up on top because they are terrified of barracudas. The sailfish is not the only threat for the ballyhoo, the cero mackerel are also sky rocking ballyhoo eating them as they land. It is an awesome sight to watch the mackerel jump into the schools of ballyhoo. You are best to fish them with a very light short trace of wire or sometimes just a long shank j-hook. While on top of the reef don’t forget the mutton snapper and yellowtail. The mutton love a live ballyhoo on a jig head dropped to the bottom just sitting there. You will also catch the occasional grouper as well. On the outside edge of the reef the King mackerel will show up, they are a lot of fun a light tackle some weight up to 40 lbs. The reef comes alive as the winter waters cool. But so does the offshore waters with sailfish, tuna and dolphin. Yes I said dolphin, in-between the cold fronts often we will get three or four days of southeast wind and the dolphin will chew. In the back country as the water cools the fish will look for warm pockets of water. Whether that is dropping off the flats in the warmer deeper water or coming up onto the flats as the sunny day warms the shallow flats, water temperature is everything. The tarpon will be the first to disappear out of the flats as the water cools but the permit and bonefish will be more tolerant. But as the water cools the barracuda jacks and trout will move in. In the gulf the Spanish mackerel will fill the near shore gulf edge. The sharks will settle back in on the wrecks. Whether you’re looking for bull sharks, hammerheads, black tips lemons or other sharks they are all hanging around the wrecks waiting to feed. Quite often where you find the sharks you will find large numbers of cobia. Be ready with a live pinfish or grunt for cobia often they come up quickly and disappear just as fast. If you don’t have the live bait it is always a good idea to have a storm swimming shad on a rod. The swimming artificial will give you loads of time to tease the cobia till he eats. It is a transition time of year. The water is cooling but watch your winds they will dictate what type of fishing you should be doing. Don’t run north on a north wind and don’t run way south on a north wind. An old timer told me that years ago and he was very right. Thanks Eddie Well get out and go fishing just being on the water is a blast.

or much of the U.S. it is time to don winter coats, sweep the chimney and winterize the boat. As the temperature plummets, it’s easy for the mind to wander toward thoughts of warm sun and a beach escape. For the fishing crews in Nosara, Costa Rica, the forecast for the next 10 months is perfect sunshine and clear fishing weather. Best of all, this is the time of year when big dorado provide plenty for the Christmas dinner table. Here in Costa Rica, our fishing pattern resets each year. Ever since the rainy season ended in early November, we have seen large
CANGL_FIL1-FIL4.indd 4
schools of dorado stacked up like cordwood. Also, there are swarms of sailfish and the occasional marlin stalking these mahi-mahi meals. We expect this feeding pattern to continue until late-March when the dorado will be replaced by schools of yellowfin tuna moving in from the north. Gangs of spinning dolphins will show us the way to these tasty ahis, and once they show up the tuna bite will strengthen until our end-of-season in early September. Our offshore marlin, yellowfin and dorado all follow schools of bait that move from north to south along the Pacific coast. Conversely, our inshore fishery doesn’t depend on pelagic bait migration patterns. Instead our secluded port of Garza Bay is fed by local mountain rivers. When the cool, nutrient-rich river water collides with the warm, fast-moving saltwater of the Pacific, conditions are perfect for localized swarms of baitfish to form. This “homegrown” bait supports a ravenous population of big roosterfish, broomtail groupers and massive cubera snapper. It’s not unusual for these monsters to weigh upwards of 60 pounds yet still ascend the water column to strike on the surface. Roosterfish are in an especially catchable mood after a cool evening’s rain floods the estuary with fresh baits. Inshore or offshore, all are ripe for the catching, and captains of FishingNosara have posted excellent catches ever since the season started. Right off the bat, angler Brian Stafford, of Jacksonville, Fla. and his fellow firefighters nabbed a big batch of dorado on the 32-foot Wanderer. Catching these big beasts on the first day of the season is a great sign of what we imagine will be a “fishtastic” 2019 season. It’s always a great time be thankful for friends, family and the blessings in life, but with Christmas Day right around the corner, it is the right time to give the gift of fishing. If you have a youngster in the family, get them a tackle box and a starter reel. If you are already an avid angler, remember that Black Friday/Cyber Monday deals are great for expanding your arsenal. And, if you are ready to challenge yourself to catch the baddest fish on the planet, come on down to Nosara and pay us a visit.

urf Expo’s Bluewater category launched last year as an examination of the crossover occurring between fishing brands and the larger market of coastal life. Since then, the show has become a must-attend event for fishing and boating retailers savvy enough to stay ahead of the trends water-loving consumers crave. The world’s largest and longest-running board and watersports show has packed the floor of its Bluewater—offshore, inshore and freshwater fishing—category headed into the Jan. 10-12 show at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando. Popular brands traditionally associated with the waterman and outdoor sporting lifestyle will show off their latest and greatest, giving retailers a hands-on first-look at the products that will drive the industry in 2019. Included in the Bluewater category are top brands like Bluewater sponsor Hell’s Bay Boatworks, Yeti, Otterbox, Fish Hippie, AFTCO, Guy Harvey, Marsh Wear, 5Fin, Salt Life, Bimini Bay, Hooked Soul, Heybo, XTRATUF, Dry Case, Bluewater Gear, Wave Life, Sunday Afternoons and more. Many of fishing’s big hitters will be there along with a huge contingent of brands that appeal to the on-the-water lifestyle. With the crossover evident in today’s marketplace, retailers and outfitters who target only their small niche are missing out on a powerful revenue source. Why sell to just the hardcore boater and angler when you could be unloading cool merchandise on the angler as well as his entire family? “The Bluewater section offers the opportunity for buyers to see the latest in trends for fishing and boating apparel and accessories at a time when retailers can leave their store,” said Kenneth Andres, with Surf Expo. “With our confluence from southern California, the Pacific Northwest, the Northeast, the Southeast, the Caribbean, Central and South America, this is a trend-setting show.” The economy is churning and consumer spending and confidence levels are higher than they have been for almost 20 years. Surf Expo is a timely opportunity for retailers to preview product for what promises to be a very busy spring season for fishing, boating and watersports retailers. “January is the best time to preview and order new product lines before the season starts,” said Andres. “Retailers can get out of their shops to talk with exhibitors and see and touch the product before they order, plus take advantage of early incentive discounts.” And for the angling marketplace, where there may be a down season but there is no off-season, Surf Expo will feature an array of exhibitors offering at-once product to fill the racks. This is an opportunity to stock the hottest new gear before the competition has even seen it. The show features more than 2,500 booths of apparel and hardgoods and a full line-up of special events, including fashion shows, awards ceremonies, education and demos. Average buyer and exhibitor turnout exceeds 28,600 attendees per show. And it’s a trade-only show, which eliminates the hubbub and massage-chair hawkers of open-to-the-public trade shows. Surf Show is intentionally held during retail down time—the January restocking period for outdoor-sports retailers—so it is a marketplace to get business done in a laid-back atmosphere. “When people come to the Surf Expo for the first time, they notice the relaxed, cool atmosphere. It’s that lifestyle we all buy into, and there are a lot of beautiful people at a surf show,” said Andres. “It’s just a great place to be if you’re in the watersports industry. If you’ve got a fishing, boating, or watersports shop, come check it out for yourself.” For more information, on January’s Surf Expo in Orlando, go to www. surfexpo.com.

very few years a new technique explodes on the bass fishing scene. Many of these trends just fade away, but some endure and become a part of every bass angler’s arsenal. The technique of the moment is the Ned rig. It is excellent for big numbers of spotted bass and smallmouths. It’ll catch largemouths, too. And it really shines when the fishing gets tough. On post-frontal days in winter, when bass are deep on vertical structure, it’s time to rig up a Ned and go to work. It is the perfect technique when bass are looking for a meal that is small and slow moving. A Ned rig is a miniature soft-plastic stick bait threaded on a light 1/8- to 1/32-ounce mushroom-style jighead. A drop of superglue holding the 3- to 5-inch worm to the jighead works wonders for making this rig durable. When fishing at winter depths, light line should be matched with a light spinning rod with a supple tip. Go as light as you dare, with 4- to 8-pound-test braid finished off with a fluorocarbon leader. When fish are active, a Ned worked steadily along the bottom is deadly. When they are sluggish, it’s better to let the jig sit on the bottom, allowing the bait’s vertical tail to do the work with the slightest shake of the rod tip. It’s not the most exciting way to fish, but it catches fish—sometimes when nothing else will.

hose who have seen his show “Man Fire Food” will recognize Roger Mooking as the iconic host of what has become the ultimate look at extreme outdoor or fire/smoke based cooking. Each week Roger introduces us to passionate and inventive outdoor cooking aficionados and an array of epic custom-built apparatuses designed to cook everything from 200-pound sturgeon to whole cows on a massive homemade spit. Roger’s visits give us insight into the innovative extremes outdoor cooks utilize in their pursuit of perfection. If you’re an outdoor cooking enthusiast, “Man Fire Food” is a must-watch program. We recently caught up with Roger to discuss the show’s success and rich content. CAM: Roger, your show has become a must-watch series for anyone who mans a grill. Why do you think your show has become so popular? Roger: Over the course of the last 7 seasons, we’ve seen an amazing array of outdoor and flame-inspired cooking devices and techniques featured on the show. If you love outdoor cooking, then you’re probably going to like the show. People just love being outside with loved ones. Backyard barbecues have been a longstanding tradition; in fact, you could say that tradition may even date back to the most primitive use of fire itself. There’s also something very special about slowing down and taking the time it demands to tend a hypnotizing fire and be immersed in the full experience, and getting to eat at the end of that entire adventure. The smells, sounds, sights of nature and breaking the hectic pace that a lot of us live at… it’s needed. CAM: So, you think cooking outdoors is somehow satisfying a primal urge? Roger: When I look back at some of the massive cuts of meat that have been prepared on previous episodes, it does seem like fire and food is primal, and I think we would all have to agree that cooking with wood, coals or heated rocks bridges a gap that is satisfying to those primal instincts.
CAM: What can we expect to see in future episodes? Roger: Humans all over the globe have been cooking with fire for many millennia now, and cultures all over the world have different ways of cooking with fire. I would like to explore extending the borders of the show to feature more places outside of the U.S. CAM: What advice would you offer the average outdoor cook? Roger: Just to enjoy the whole experience. I think the average outdoor cook is a more experienced cook, or else they would be a novice indoor cook. It takes a different level of attention to detail and mindfulness to cook outdoors because you have to deal with many other variables like wind, rain, keeping the fire going, how hot or cool is the fire, what are the hotspots, how much wood/charcoal do I need to add at a particular stage, bugs trying to get you, and all sorts of other things that you simply don’t have to worry about in a modern day North American kitchen with electricity and good shelter. Also, use the smoke as a seasoning advantage. You don’t need to add all kinds of stuff if you start with a freshly caught fish, some salt and a bit of good wood smoke; the work is already done, you just have to make sure you don’t get in the way or don’t burn the darn thing. It’s the magic of simplicity. CAM: How do you select the places that we see on the show? Roger: There is a very dedicated but small team of amazing people who find, research and vet all the potential locations for “Man Fire Food.” The winning candidates have endured hours of interviews and a barrage of questions as exhaustive as possible. The variables are so unimaginable to the viewer, and if we all do our jobs right, you have no idea how much work went into what looks so simple on TV. We’re always interested in looking at unique “Man Fire Food” subject matters. If any of your readers think they qualify, they should email: Contact@rogermooking.com. “Man Fire Food’s” new season premiered Wednesday, Nov. 28 at 9 p.m. on The Cooking Channel.

FISH & FISHING

Feeding Strategies MARK SOSIN What appears obvious may be deceiving. Most anglers erroneously believe that when predators corner a hapless school of baitfish, they simply open their mouths and swim through the prey, gorging themselves in the process. It doesn’t happen that way. A predator must isolate and attack one specific victim at a time. That’s not always an easy task. A frantic school of baitfish sensing predators can appear as a shimmering mass of silver with each individual member of the school constantly changing position. Selecting a tasty morsel to ingest can frustrate even the most sophisticated gamefish. That’s one reason why you’ll find predators lurking under a pod of bait. The instant their intended prey strays from the pack, they strike. When you think about it, you can understand that any gamefish searches for a victim that is isolated, disabled or looks different from the others. Feeding is a tradeoff. Success centers on expending as little energy as possible for the food value received. Unsuccessfully chasing prey for long distances keeps a predator lean, hungry, and tends to slow it down. The easiest way to get a strike when you locate a school of baitfish starts with a cast into the middle of the school. It doesn’t matter whether you are fishing an artificial lure or a natural bait. The retrieve should work your offering toward the fringes of the school in basically the same direction in which the school is swimming or at a 45-degree angle to the basic direction. As your bait or lure eases toward the edge of the school, it is easier for a predator to isolate. And, it looks slightly different than the baitfish in the school. Some live bait fishermen squeeze a minnow before casting

it or drifting it so that it will be disabled. Clipping a fin or two also impairs swimming motion. The injured fish will have trouble swimming, and that means it will send out vibrations that attract the attention of predators. These frantic movements to obtain equilibrium frequently trigger the strike. Even during the anticipated feast of locating a school of baitfish, certain factors come into play. As water temperatures drop, a predator will not pursue its prey as fast and as far as it would in warmer water. When you are fishing a chum slick and fish are feeding on the chum, it is much more effective to fish an offering without retrieving it. A dead drift works just fine. I’ve seen that produce inshore and offshore including tuna and sailfish. I once had an opportunity to watch scientists monitor the behavior of a school of bluefish in a massive aquarium as they attacked a school of minnows. By chance, I focused on a minnow that did not move, even when attacked by a bluefish four times. Each time, the bluefish broke off the attack because the minnow did not behave as it should. On the fifth pass, the minnow moved and it was eaten faster than you can read this sentence. Finally, if you are trolling and see a school of small fish on the surface, approach the school slowly so as not to scare them. Ease alongside the school and work the fringes or establish a position ahead of the baitfish. If you prefer to cast, keep the boat away from the school and make the cast into the school. As you retrieve your offering and it begins to clear the fringes of the school, you should get a strike.
