ottom fish anglers in the Atlantic from the coast of North Carolina south through the Florida Keys could soon be required to have Photo by Adrian Gray descending devices onboard and available for release of unwanted fish while fishing for snapper and grouper species. The South Atlantic Fishery Management Council approved the measure at its September meeting. If approved by NOAA Fisheries, the requirement will likely go into effect in late 2020. Additionally, the use of non-offset, non-stainless-steel circle hooks could be required. The new requirements are part of a package of “best practices” the council has been considering for the snapper and grouper fishery. It addresses the results of federal research that shows mortality rates of almost 30 and 40 percent for red snapper released by the recreational and commercial sectors, respectively. “The bottom line is that many important fish stocks are showing dead discard estimates that exceed catch (red snapper, black sea bass, gag and black grouper),” read a council meeting summary. “That means the data show that more fish are being released and dying than are able to be kept by fishermen.” The descending-device requirement is intended to increase chances of survival for released fish by decreasing the effects of barotrauma. These are, by far, the most wicked fighting freshwater fish around, and we are very fortunate to have several area lakes stocked with these monster fish. Lake clarity is clear and stained in the backs of creeks. Striper fishing has been excellent lately. The bigger fish are really starting to come up in the water column and are headed towards shallow humps and into the creeks. We’ve already had many stripers in the 15 to 25 pound range. Look for these big stripers anywhere around the lake; however, most of our fish are being caught in the mouths and backs of creeks. This is a great time of year

to start using bigger bait. Start off by pulling planer boards and freelines early in the morning. Live bluebacks and gizzard shad are working best. Top water bite has been wicked good and should be getting even better as the water continues to cool, so as you’re pulling baits, keep a Red Fin or a spook tied on and work those banks and points. As the sun comes up and the day gets warmer, the fish will move a little deeper. Switch to down lines and weighted free lines. Remember, this is the time of year to keep an eye out for seagulls. Where there are birds, there is bait, and where there is bait, there are fish. We want to wish everyone out there a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Winter Trout, Without the Waders

ith the mid-November cold snap we just experienced, our winter patterns on the Murphy area lakes are starting to take center stage, and while the species I primarily focus on in cold water are smallmouth and striped bass, I have been doing an increasing number of trips each winter for brown trout. While most of the trout we catch are in the 12 to 20 inch range, we do boat a lot of 5 plus pound fish each winter, and we even manage to boat a few every December and January in the 10 plus pound range. With that in mind, I would like to take a little time this month to look at patterns, timing, and advantages involved with this fishery. First and foremost, I feel that there are a few advantages to a winter brown trout fishery in a lake versus one in a river or stream, particularly for older, younger, less

mobile, or more inexperienced anglers. Winter wading can be a challenge, as waters are often high and swift, but my brown trout fishing is done from a boat. In addition, it is, in my opinion, much easier to keep warm in mid-January, for example, in a 22 foot bay boat than it is wading waste deep in 35 degree water. Legal methods are also different on the lake. While a number of our best rivers and streams have very restrictive limits in terms of lures, hooks, and equipment you can fish with (and rightfully so), the browns that I fish for in our local lakes have no such restrictions, meaning bait, spinning, and casting tackle are all on the table. In terms of bait selection, the one thing you have to remember is that a brown trout in a lake is a predator, and he is looking for meat. I have caught fish on a wide variety of lures (jerkbaits,

crankbaits, spinners, spoons, hard swimbaits, and soft swimbaits, just to name a few), and I am sure I have caught them on more that I just can’t think of offhand. The smaller fish will also take night crawlers and small minnows. However, most of our biggest ones (over 5 pounds) have come on live blueback herring. The reason for this is that these fish, within just

a couple of days of stocking, seem to learn what a herring is, and the rest of their life revolves around eating them. Matching the hatch has been a phrase I have heard my whole life when it comes to trout fishing, and it is hard to beat a live herring when fish are accustomed to feeding on them. If you are a fly fishing purist, I am assuming that a quality bait-

December Hybrids and Bass By Darren Hughes

he cold weather is finally here, but don’t be a fair-weather angler. December and the winter months on Lake Chatuge are off the hook, so throw on some thermals and hit the water for some of the best bass and hybrid fishing in Western North Carolina. Our gift certificates are a perfect gift for the angler on your list. Water temperatures are currently in the low 60’s, and the water level is down 7 feet. Water clarity is clear throughout the lake and slightly stained in the backs of creeks. Spotted bass are still schooled up throughout the lake and we are absolutely slaying them!

We’ve had a fantastic top-water bite and down line bite in the mornings. Check shallow humps and areas from 15-30 ft. deep. Watch for these fish to bust the water as they chase up bait then cast into them. Poppers, spooks, spoons, and, of course, live bait have been working great on catching these spots. Also, don’t forget to target your points and brush piles. Some excellent largemouth and spots have been caught lately off rocky points and around brush. Now that water temps have fallen, the hybrids are on the move. These guys are heading towards the creeks and rivers and are moving up in the water column. Early morning top water has been great on Red Fins and Zara Spooks. The same rule of thumb applies as for the spotted bass—search around shallow areas and watch for fish

chasing up bait. Trolling freelines with live bait and planer boards should work fine as well. We’ve also been doing awesome with a downline on some big hybrids still schooled up deep in the mouths of creeks. Several fish from the 8-10-pound range have been boated with us lately. Live blueback herring remains your best bet to catch these fish. December fishing on Lake Chatuge is always an exciting month. The bigger fish start feeding more aggressively, and for us, it’s a great time of year for some great top-water action. Remember, live bait on this lake can be the difference between a successful day of fishing and

The fishing in the National Park right now is slower in the morning due to the drop in temperatures at night. You will not be disappointed in the water levels! We are catching most of our fish between 10am and 5pm . We are throwing dry dropper rigs in the higher elevations and double nymph rigs. With that being said Higher elevation rivers such as Road Prong and Upper Little River are fishing really well past 10am.If you want to hit the lower elevation rivers, it still would be best to hit them in the morning despite the cold. Swainglers – It’s All About The Fun! By Tammy Millsaps

ctober’s trip was, by far, my favorite since I’ve been sponsoring the Swainglers! Two-dozen plus anglers ventured to the river at Darnell Farms. By the way, Darnell Farms Farmers Market is AWESOME! They have the best homegrown produce, activities for everyone and the best staff around! I have several new members in the club this year. The student that always seems the most excited and ready to go is Alexandria Styles, Alex for short. Alex is a very special person in many ways. She has kind words for everyone and is very respectful to her peers and teachers. Alex and her class have jobs in the school. One of them is to come work in the office. Their duties are cleaning and stocking the coffee area and distributing the mail, so I see her everyday. The closer it gets to our fishing trips, the more excited she

becomes. Once it’s fishing day and time to load the bus, she’s usually the first one on. During our bus ride to the river, she talked about what bait she is going to use and told me about her daddy taking her fishing. On that cool October day, Alex brought nightcrawlers. She doesn’t like the feel of them but her fellow club members were happy to offer a hand baiting her hook. Within minutes, she reels in a fish and BIGGEST smile comes beaming from her as she says, “I caught a fish, I caught a fish!” Not only did she catch that one, she caught two more before our forty-five minute trip was over. No, she didn’t catch a big bass or trout, but to Alex and the rest of the Swainglers, the three knotty heads she reeled in were trophy size. Alex wasn’t fishing for sport, she was fishing for fish and just being outside enjoying the outdoors! Her bait and

fishing-pole weren’t the most expensive or fancy new lure that is advertised on the Outdoor Channel. She proudly caught her three knotty-heads with nightcrawlers using a basic spin-caster reel and rod. To be honest, I had tears in my eyes when she caught her first fish. Seeing the joy and excitement in her face was contagious. Alex’s fellow anglers were congratulating her with high fives and rounds of, “Way to go Alex”! We did have another fish caught. Experienced Angler Trevor Jones caught a nice brown trout. Trevor is an avid angler. I can always rely on him to help fellow students baiting their hook or whatever they need. I hope you read this and take something from it. I admit, I love

to catch big fish too, but that’s not what it’s always about. When we go on our Swaingler fishing trips, I don’t fish. I walk the banks checking on the kids and, of course, taking pictures. I wish everyone could catch something, rather it be a knotty head or a trophy sized tournament fish, it doesn’t matter! As you can tell by the picture of Alex displaying one of her catches, she is happy-and that’s why I sponsor this club!

Cold Water and Big Eyes

o other time of year will you see more, or any bigger, walleye than right now. The bait will be schooled up and the walleye will be keying in on it. As the surface temps drop and you see low 50s to 40s, it’s time to look deep for ol’ mister walleye. A good depthfinder is a must and you may have to cover a lot of area to find them, especially since the numbers are down in most of our mountain lakes. I usually check as shallow as 40ft but, more than likely when you find them, they will be at least 70ft deep.

If your lake has white bass and you start catching whites, you are in the right location-just drop deeper, usually 20ft deeper. I troll or vertical jig at this time of year, but live bait will work well too. For trolling, I mix it up. I usually try Alabama rigs, Repalas, or spoons. In vertical jigging, I use spoons or ice jigs. Seems like color changes daily, so bring a lot of different colored lures and different sizes too. Watch for water temperature changes, as a small change may hold bait in a small area and if the bait is there the fish will be close. If your gonna troll, pay close attention to your speed; I don’t like to get over 1.50 mph. Weather is probably never more important. I like to fish right before a front moves in. Usually, if you get a lot rain, it tends to shut them down. Always dress warm and it’s a good idea to take a thermos of coffee or something warm

to eat. Bottom line… If you don’t mind the cold temps, you will usually be rewarded with some fine walleye for your supper table. Numbers are at an all time low in our mountain lakes, so only take

what you need and be sure to stop fishing when you get your catch because fish brought up from 70ft tend to not survive when you try to release them. As always, be safe and take a kid fishing!

‘Just Right’ By Capt. James McManus

his is the time of year when you know you are going to be outdoors doing something…you just have to decide which thing is the most pressing. Gone are the days when it was so sticky you just wanted to stay in the AC and drink cold beverages, still, it’s just before when all you want to do is sit by the fire and drink hot beverages. So now we have established that it’s “just right” outside, maybe requiring a jacket in the morning which hopefully, comes off by midday and isn’t reapplied ‘til the sun starts it’s subhorizonal journey. The rivers have been stocked with all manner of trout for delayed harvest, almost all hunting seasons are now open, a few leaves are remaining to accentuate camping trips, but my favorite thing is the renewed bank bite at Fontana. Would love to have access to some

book with fish from the surface, down to 80 or so feet. Just because it’s cooler doesn’t mean fish won’t seek out deeper water. Cold fronts, in particular, can drive them deep but they seem to not bury themselves on the bottom sulking, like in summer heat. Getting them to bite is more a case of picking the bait that can be used at the depth you are marking them. Seems I always have tons of rods rigged, never more than I need, just lots of them. The reason for this is that I don’t want to pass on any opportunity to reach fish I mark or spot. A fish blowing up on the surface is great fun matched to a spook or popper. Jerkbaits like the X-raps are great searching baits, they cast far distances and always catch fish. Jigs with flukes or K-techs can be used anywhere but excel thrown to and

While this style of trout fishing is definitely different than what you would experience on one of our pristine mountain rivers or streams, both have their advantages, and we are blessed to live in an area with so many options and species. walked down a bank. If fish are really deep, an ice jig is the quickest way to get down to them and then there are the different colors and weights of all of the above. So take a little thermos for early, some waters for midday, matching jackets, and lots of rods and baits and enjoy the finest time of the year. fish imitation, somewhere in the 3 to 5 inch range, and with a bit of flash tied in, would probably be very enticing to these fish. I would also guess that you would be much better off with a weighted fly or line, even though I will readily admit that flyfishing is not my specialty. While I have never had a winter fly angler pursue browns from my boat with fly tackle, I 8

of those archival tags that are affixed to great white sharks. A few dozen placed on some of the bigger spots and walleye would let me know where these things hide from June to October. But now you can cruise a bank and, if fish are anywhere near, they will show up on your sonar. The even better outcome is that if they show up they will also bite what you feed them. Fish are starting to group up into schools near bait so find one and you have usually found a good many. Baits have grown a little so there isn’t as much problem matching the hatch with incredibly small offerings. So, I know what I’ll be doing, taking the next steps to locate the biggest concentrations of fish so I don’t just wander aimlessly staring at my sonar. I like to start more towards the middle of the lake now. Although bass don’t move as much as stripers, they do still tend to move up or down the lake depending on the season. They make the move towards cooler, deeper water near the dam when summer heat is bearing down, and back towards mid-lake at this time of year, before the spring push towards the river mouths. I tend to find them on points at creek mouths, and smaller points farther back into the creeks themselves. Places like the mouth of Fourney, Chambers, or Greasy Branch Creeks are some of my go-to spots. If there is some wind, check out the points with some color, whether they are big or small. What It Takes To Be A Professional Guide

o anyone who fishes, working as a guide and being considered a professional, is the ultimate dream job to have. I’m lucky enough to have an opportunity to call my home waters my office, and have an occupation that is the envy of other people. With that privilege has come a tremendous amount of what we’ll call “behind the scenes” work that most of my clients, or the average person, will never see nor understand. In addition to that, there comes the years of experience fishing in almost every variety of water imaginable, which is a bare minimum requirement to even consider guiding an option for a career. I have given and sacrificed the majority of my life to fishing and becoming a professional guide, and it’s a responsibility that not only requires you to wear many hats but also demands your complete devotion to becoming a steward of the waters you call home. I’ll try to shed some insight on what it actually means to be a professional guide. Working hours can vary drastically, with most of my days beginning at around 4:30 in the morning. At this point, I’m normally half awake trying to put my waders on while simultaneously making coffee. The night before was spent

gathering waders/ boots checking, and double checking, sizes while packing extras, re-rigging rods/ respooling reels, checking the weather/ water-levels, filling the truck up with gas, packing up the drift boat, coming up with Plan A/ Plan B/ Plan C in case something becomes compromised, and maybe squeezing a quick bite to eat in-between. That’s then followed by, at a minimum, a thirty to forty minute commute to stop at the earliest opening grocery store to pick up my clients’ lunch, snacks, and by this point, more coffee. All of this is generally done before 6 o’clock rolls around. Then there is the gear. As a guide that offers both fly fishing and spin fishing trips: I have spent a significant amount of money on tackle. It’s not fair to clients to just settle for cheap equipment either, for a myriad of reasons. That goes beyond just rods and reels as well. You have to budget in other forms of equipment as well, such as quality waders/ boots, a drift-boat/ raft, with what might arguably be the most important piece of gear being your vehicle. Your personal vehicle is often the one you’re guiding out of, so you not only have to be okay with putting on a high amount of mileage in a short time, but also be willing to keep it

clean and in good running order. There have been many nights I have spent cleaning the inside of my truck to keep it in good condition for my clients. Time is also a major factor in all of this. Most folks don’t often

see or understand how much time guiding can sometimes take away from your personal life. There have been many times I can recall rushing to family events after trips and taking the waders off in parking lots. Most of your free

Buddy Stand

ootball, deer hunting, and homemade chili season are Jake and Toms’ favorite time of year. After a long week of working the grind, both look forward to Saturday and Tom’s family owned land. One section of land was in between a small subdivision and two other private owners. All together it was 48 acers. Tom and Jake called this the “Honey Hole”. They had a buddy stand at the end of a small open area. There were plenty of scrapes and droppings, indicating it was a well-traveled area. The first Saturday morning of deer season, they loaded up in Tom’s truck and headed to the Honey Hole. They parked in a turnaround that was at the edge of the property, loaded their rifles, sprayed sent removal, and headed into the woods. Both Jake and Tom are prior service. Tom is a Marine and Jake

in the Army. As you can imagine, they were separated and carried their rifles at the low ready as if on patrol. They would stop every so often to look and listen. They slowly made their way to the base of the buddy stand. One at the time they climbed the ladder and took a seat. This morning it was cold to the point they were pressed shoulder to shoulder talking in low tones about how “It’s so cold it reminds me of when I was in artic training,” Jake said. This of course, led to jokes. They would hear a noise, stop talking and look out. This process took place many times while the sun was coming up. Then the squirrels started moving, birds started chirping. Suddenly, they saw a head poke out of the pinewood area. They froze in place and squinted to see. The deer made its way out into the open. Both Tom and Jake put

a scope on it. It was a good size buck. Now in the county were Tom and Jake lived, there was a four-point law. And wouldn’t you know it, the buck had three points. Being law-abiding citizens, they watched as the buck spent the next thirty minutes in the opening. After the buck had teased them enough, it left. The jokes resumed, one after the other. They got to laughing so hard the stand was shaking, Jake looked up and the top of the trees were moving back and forth as the tide ebbs and flows. He said, “Well, I think we have

made enough noise,” Tom said, “Yeah, plus it’s almost kick-off and the Mrs.’s has a big pot of chili cooking.” Over the years, we used that buddy stand until someone decided they wanted it more. It wasn’t about getting a deer, but just being outdoors with fresh air and a battle buddy with the same background who has been in some bad places and had to do what it took to survive. It served as a place to unwind, talk through things, and renew one’s self.

Top It Off

ecember is here and the elevation game is playing out. Lakes in the high elevations are deep in the fall pattern while lakes in the lower elevations are starting to ripen. You can expect bass on secondary points blowing up on shad as they are pushed further to the backs of creeks, as the water temperatures gets cooler. Moving baits are recommended for chasing roaming bass. Top water baits, such as walking baits and poppers, are a very good choice. When bass blow up on shad at the surface, you’ll see injured forage twitching and kicking around as a result of this feeding frenzy. The top water baits are a perfect imitator for this type of pattern. Flutter spoons and lipless crank baits are a killer when you want to get at the bigger sizes beneath the chasing bass. In wind, spinner baits and buzz baits are

great for bass in the lay downs or brush piles. Of course, timing is everything when it comes to seeing such patterns. You’ll find these blowups in the morning and evening hours. Bass will feed throughout the day and will move deeper in the water column closer to the mid day hour. During the wind, look for ambush points, such as any hard cover-like rock or wood. I have noticed that the topwater pattern has dominated this year with numbers and quality of fish. The gear I use for the top water set

up is a six foot ten inch medium, to medium fast, rod and a fast reel with a 7 speed or more. Braid to mono leader for the line. You can use this set up for jerk baits-just use fluorocarbon for line. Remember to keep it simple and plan ahead. Enjoy this time of year and you may catch your new personal best. Dress for cold temperatures in the morning and warmer weather in the evenings-layer up and shed them as

it gets warmer. Wear your buffs, hats, and gloves to prevent sunburn. The days are shorter and the time has changed, so keep that in mind as you plan your travel. As you know, in higher elevations some winter patterns may show their heads since we are knocking on the door of winter. You may want to bring some big baits if you are looking for that trophy. If winter is not your thing, you do have options. Just move to lakes in the lower elevations. The mountains have so much to offer if you know how to plan for it. Good luck this season and turn some new people on to it. It’s a great time for new anglers to get some easy catches and to hone their own skills for the future. Best of luck.

All I Want for Christmas…

12-point buck and a shiny new truck; a new Hoyt Bow, and a bass boat ready to tow. A house on a piece of land, and even a brandnew tree stand. You make the payments and I’ll use the goods, why are we still talking? I should get back in the woods. Just leave my presents under the tree, and before you even ask, yes, they are all for me. As an avid outdoorsman, I don’t think I have ever had much trouble coming up with a hefty Christmas list. If I let my wheels really get to turning, the list will be long enough to reach from my house straight up to the North Pole. Most of our loved ones can have us grinning ear to ear with a one-stop-shop at Bass Pro Shops or Cabela’s for Christmas, but there is so much more to this season than the gifts under the tree. Now don’t get me wrong, I

love getting my hands on the latest and greatest in the outdoor industry as much as the next guy, but one thing will never change. The shine of new gear will wear off eventually, but the memories will never fade. When I think back on my most cherished memories in the outdoors, I think of unforgettable times with friends and family hunting and fishing. I wouldn’t trade the memories of fishing with my father after church on Sundays out of an old V-Hull for anything in the world. Sure, it wasn’t the fastest or shiniest rig on the water, but if that old

boat could talk, I would sit there for hours just to re-live some of the best times of my life. Outside of the fishing memories, my favorite memory of hunting isn’t even a special kill, but rather my dad showing me how to field dress my first deer. I have gone back to that memory on every harvest since then, and it never fails to put a big grin on my face while I’m cleaning my deer. I am so blessed to have been able to grow up with God-fearing parents that raised my brother and me in a way that opened our eyes to the Lord’s wonderful cre-

ations all around us. I’m keeping this article short and sweet as I reflect on the memories and people that made me the man I am today. So, I want to thank my brother for being the best friend I could have ever asked for and for always being there for me in the good times and the bad. I want to thank my mother for being the most kind-hearted woman I have ever met and for her never-ending love and support that she has given to me and my family. Finally, I want to thank my father for being the hardest working man that I will ever know, and for being willing to sacrifice anything for my family. I love you all! HIGH COUNTRY PROFESSIONAL GUIDE time fishing will be spent scouting water, and if you’re not doing that then you’re generally reorganizing or spending time doing general maintenance on gear. It’s a job that doesn’t have a clock in or clock out time, but rather you do what you have to do in order to make time for everything else, while also putting in the hours necessary to make future trips a success. You have to remember that people pay you for your experience and knowledge, and to not have that while taking peoples’ money isn’t fair to the folks who genuinely want to learn how to fish. With all of this being said, guiding is still the best job in the world. The fatigue that I often feel at the end of the day is worth it when I get to share with my clients in some incredible experiences that remind me of the same feelings of elation that I had growing up fishing here in Western North Carolina. The Casting Corner – Mending the Fly

ope, we are not talking about repairing fly line, but we are talking about fly fishing and casting. Mending is just repositioning the line. There are a lot of reasons to do a line mend. You may ask why that’s important. I will give you a few situations that can increase your chances of catching a fish by mending your line. Get to know the different types of mends in fly casting and it will change your game. First thing to note is that there are arial mends and water mends. Arial mends take place before the line hits the water. Guess when a water mend happens. CORRECT! We reposition the line to adjust what the fly is doing or will do. One thing to note is that the mend should not move the fly from where it is. It should move the portion of line

that will have an affect on the fly. For example, a cast downstream at an angle with a weighted fly that you want to sink will sink faster if you do a hump mend. Have enough line off the reel to get to your target and then cast short of your target. After laying the cast out short of the target, you can slip line out of your rod tip and not

move the fly as it starts to sink by making a quick 12” up and down motion with your rod tip and let the water tension pull some of the line out of your rod tip. Then do it again until all the line you need is out and then start the retrieve. That will work with a dry fly too. Just make the cast short of the target and lower

the rod tip to the water and start the hump mends. The next thing to consider if we are trying to get a fly to sink before it gets to the target is water tension on the line. Watch what affect the mending is having on the fly. If you do the hump mend and the fly is moving, it is losing the neutral drift that allows the fly to sink at its fastest rate. So watch the line at the furthest point away from the rod tip and do the mends. Try not to allow the line end to move or pause. When you get to the water with a weighted fly, practice the mending before you get to the place you plan to catch the fish. Using the water hump mend can change the game for you and get the fish that you may not have.

Making the Most of Winter Waters

he hustle and bustle of the holiday season is in full swing, and so is the great fishing in the Delayed Harvest sections of the South Carolina Rivers. Just prior to November 1, we received a great amount of rain and much cooler temperatures, and all the rivers are in great shape. Many thanks to the Walhalla State Fish Hatchery for their tremendous work during summer and fall heat waves, keeping all these fish in great health for us to enjoy in the rivers. The helicopter has flown, and stocking is continuing throughout the winter, with plenty of fish to be caught. Below average temperatures have started us off in November, making it feel a little like winter here. No snow as of yet, but with continued below-average temperatures, maybe a white Christ-

mas? Colder temperatures mean the warmest water is near to river flow, and the fish move into the deeper pockets, and runs. As the water temperatures warm during the day, the fish will migrate from the depths, and into shallower areas of the river to feed. Early mornings and late afternoons, double nymph rigs, and adding split shot to get to the holding areas of the fish, will prove beneficial. During warmer days in December, some dry fly action may be experienced, although it can be very sporadic. Dead-drifts, and swinging fly rigs will bring the most success targeting the seams, and deeper runs. Winter streamer fishing is in full swing now. Big fish have to eat, and why not throw them what they want. Smaller streamers work as well, for those not interested in

throwing big heavy streamers. In the case of the smaller streamers, with high water flows from winter rains, a pinch or two of weight may be necessary. On days of heavier flows on the river, a sink tip may be necessary to keep these streamers down in the water column to entice strikes. As we continue our work, and appreciate everyone in their efforts of leave no trace on the rivers. We are starting to notice a reduction of remains in the river corridors, and it is the continued effort from all of us, that will make this place beautiful for the generations to come.
