he origins of Salt Life are pure. With two simple words in a scrawling font, the iconic brand began as a tattoo inked on the backs of a couple of surfing fishermen in Jacksonville Beach, Fla. Four hard-core watermen began grassroots promotion of the design in 2003, selling bumper stickers and T-shirts. he 34th Annual Palm Beach International Boat Show is set to take place from Thursday, March 28 to Sunday, March 31 on the West Palm Beach waterfront along Flagler Drive. rom my perch atop a pile of boulders, I faced directly into a stiff northeast wind and its attendant waves. I stood with dubious footing as the swirling elements riled the air and water around me. There was seemingly no reason for me or anyone else to fish this particular spot at this particular time, but I had a hunch. Several yards seaward from where I balanced among the loose stones, the shallow bottom sloped to a depth of about 8 feet. The submerged valley was fed by a newly dropping tide. The wind and waves, working to oppose the falling water, stirred the seas over the basin into a strip of foaming turbulence. With tide pushing baitfish into the depression—and the churning water pinning them there—an ideal ambush situation was created for any nearby snook craving an easy meal. For weeks, the wind had blown steadily from the east and southeast. When a forceful northeast blow ensued, I anticipated predatory activity. Consecutive days featuring gusts of up to 25 mph compelled me to abandon my usual bridge fishing to capitalize on the shifting atmospheric conditions. Mindful of the wind’s ability to influence the location of baitfish schools, my instincts drew me to this boulder-capped point of land protruding from the river’s western bank. Few creatures in the diet of gamefish wear chartreuse or anything remotely similar to the flamboyant shade of green. Any critter dressed in such gaudy fashion would be doomed immediately to the stomach of a predator. So, when my chartreuse jig entered the tempestuous waters of the drop-off, it was snapped up instantly by a 26-inch snook. Not long after releasing the fish, underwater visibility proved to be of no significance on this occasion. When I switched to a less noticeable variety of lure, the snook continued their assault and hit almost everything I threw at them for the next four nights. Throughout the feed, I had the setting entirely to myself; the fish were in an aggressive mood all the while—a product of the same natural forces that guided me to their location with such timeliness. The most interesting part of the affair was that the feeding, in spite of its furor, existed for only a short period of the outgoing tide each night. The snook, most of which were in the high 20-inch range, abandoned their tactics when the wind shifted back to its more regular southeastern origin. As the tide progressed in its unremitting cycle, the frenzy of action concluded—to resume in another place on a different breath of wind and a different stage of the tide. S

alt air and saltwater can restore the body and the soul, sometimes literally. This is a story about a unique ocean voyage that has a berth waiting for you. Travis Suit’s inspiration for standup paddling from the Bahamas to Florida is his daughter Piper, who was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis when she was four. “CF” is a progressive genetic disease that causes persistent lung infections and limits the ability to breathe over time (www.pipersangels.org). When Travis learned that saltwater could be very beneficial in alleviating the symptoms of CF, he immersed Piper in saltwater activities and became inspired to create an oceanbased event that could raise awareness and funds to help CF patients everywhere. Thus was born the Crossing For A Cure. Travis made his first crossing from the Bahamas to Florida in 2013 with three stalwart friends who traversed 90 miles after paddling continuously for 15 hours. They came to be known as “Piper’s Angels.” Since then, their ranks have grown to include hundreds of inspired paddlers, dedicated volunteers and generous sponsors who work together to support and improve the lives of families in the cystic fibrosis community by raising awareness, offering life-expanding activities and providing urgent financial support through the Piper’s Angels Foundation. This year’s journey from Bimini to Florida is scheduled for June 15, and opportunities for you to become part of the Crossing abound. The event is open to standup or prone boards, surf skis, outrigger canoes and dories, with a potential of $88,000 in cash purses for the competitive categories. You can paddle as a competitor or a recreational relay member, or sponsor a paddler, a team or the Foundation in any amount. O

f all the animals a diver might encounter, the octopus most easily qualifies as a creature from outer space. But, despite their eight arms, three hearts, nine brains and blue blood, octopuses really do have an earthly lineage. They are a mollusk (think oysters and conchs), but gave up their shells around 400 million years ago. In that time, nature has figured out some strange but effective ways for this animal to eat without being eaten. Dispensing with its shell gave the octopus flexibility and mobility. To take advantage of their mobility, the octopus features eight flexible, sucker-equipped arms. With these arms octopuses can pull themselves in any direction over the ocean bottom or swim through open water. For real emergencies, they can squirt a blast of water from their siphon for a jet-propelled take-off. Just about every part of an octopus except its beak and eyes can flow like Silly Putty. Consequently, an octopus can work its way through just about any opening it can get its beak through. That means an octopus has lots of places to hide.

Octopuses have turned hiding into an art form. Their skin contains millions of chromatophores—cells that contain red, orange, yellow, brown or black pigment. Each cell can be individually expanded or contracted to show or hide color and change the texture of their skin. This allows the octopus to match its surroundings in a fraction of a second as it moves. The most alien characteristic of octopuses is probably their eight arms. Each arm has double rows of suckers that not only grasp, but also taste. As an octopus hunts the ocean bottom, the arms independently probe cracks and crevices in search of prey. If it appears those arms have minds of their own, they do. While an octopus has about 500 million neurons, only about a third of them form the central brain. The remaining two-thirds are equally divided among the eight arms, putting them where they can most efficiently interact with those myriad muscles, sensors and chromatophores. So where does a diver go to encounter these amazing animals? My favorite local spot is the Blue Heron Bridge. Octopus studies at the site, led by local researcher Chelsea Bennett, have found common octopus, the Atlantic longarm octopus, Caribbean two-spot, Caribbean reef, pygmy and brownstriped octopuses there. Since octopuses are so good at hiding, Chelsea offered advice from her many hours of octopus observation. “The common and the longarm octopuses are generally found in high densities at the east and west end of BHB (typically just south of the bridges). I call these species underwater neighbors because they are both found in same areas but can coexist because they are associated with different substrates. The common octopus lives in hard-bottom areas (rock, rubble, shell) and the Atlantic longarm in sandy plains.” Pura Vida Divers is featuring Blue Heron Bridge Diver specialty courses throughout the month of March. cott Christian of Alpharetta, Ga., released 262.5 inches of barracuda to win the fly division of the 2019 Cuda Bowl Tournament Feb. 2 in the Lower Florida Keys. Guided by Capt. John Benvenuto of Key West, Fla., he earned the title of divisional grand champion for the second consecutive year. Christian’s catches included the fly division’s largest individual barracuda, measuring 47.75 inches. Andrew Hunt of Marathon, Fla., won the Cuda Bowl’s spin division championship, releasing barracuda totaling 278.5 inches. He was guided by Capt. Chad Huff of Fort Myers, Fla. The tournament’s female grand champion was Julie Leeman of Tucson, Ariz., who released barracuda totaling 240.5 inches on spin tackle. She fished with Capt. Chris Leeman. Kai Decker of St. Augustine, Fla., earned the title of top junior angler. Guided by Capt. Mike O’Brien of Summerland Key, Fla., the 13-yearold released 124.5 inches of barracuda. The tournament’s Ben Gravett Memorial Team Trophy went to Florida anglers Bob Sellers of Sanford and Eddie Hunt of Deltona, fishing with Capt. Bo Sellers of Ramrod Key, Fla. The anglers released 12 fish measuring a total of 524.75 inches. Trent Miller of Hamilton, Illinois, caught the largest individual barracuda in the spin division. He released the 51.75-inch fish while guided by Capt. Scott Irvine of Key West. Marathon angler Wade Mayberry scored the most releases in the spin division with 32. He fished with Capt. Albert Ponzoa, also of Marathon. In the fly division, Jim Knowles of Round Hill, Va., released 22 barracuda to take the “most releases” title. His captain was Peter Heydon of Key West. W

elcome to the challenge of spring fishing. I know a lot of people struggle to consistently pattern fish in the month of March, so I have put together a few key points that should help out. Although the days may warm up considerably, the

water can still stay chilly. The continuation of passing fronts can drop the water temperature quite quickly as it struggles to climb up the thermometer, keeping fish less aggressive. In March, I still hold onto some of the same structure I key on in the coldest months. Although I may start to mix in more shell and grass into my target areas, one thing that needs to remain from the cold weather handbook is quick and easy access to deeper water. With frequent cold fronts, although they may not have the same punch, the fish will still look to retreat to more stable water temps in the depths of a general area. The warmer and sunnier the day, the farther the fish will stray from that deep-water access, but they will not completely abandon its safety. I like to focus on the outer edge of the guts that lead from deeper water to the flats early, and I’ll follow them up on the flat as the day warms. With the fronts comes dreaded high pressure! Here are a couple tactics I rely on in this situation. First, and typically the most productive, is to downsize your lure. This is especially true in the spring when forage is young. I also like to go with a natural or translucent color patterns for a more natural approach. I tend to slow down and work lures closer to the bottom, as well, when the barometer is on the rise. My next approach, when nothing is working in a high barometer setting, is to do something completely opposite of what I just recommended. When all else fails, I tie on a very noisy lure that creates a lot of water displacement. This could be a noisy topwater, a noisy rattling lure or a lipped crankbait-style plug. At this stage, I am just looking for a reaction bite. If I can aggravate them enough, they just might take the bait. Although these techniques are polar opposites, I find the fish to be on one end of the spectrum or the other when dealing with high pressure. You just need to experiment and figure them out. on fish and I did nothing but sit on the boat or in a ‘fighting’ chair, only to have the 1st or 2nd mate hand me a rod after a fish was on. To my dismay, after only a few ‘cranks’ on the reel, the equipment was taken away from me for the crew to land and gaff the fish. No explanation as to what I might expect when I hired the guide. That was many years ago and I committed that if I ever had an opportunity to be a professional guide none of my clients would endure the same. Ironically, may years later and today, for both offshore and inshore charters, there are fishing guides that DO NOT ALLOW their clients to make their own presentations to enjoy the experience of ‘FISHING’. I understand that their philosophies (especially for inshore fishing) are that the client will cast into the mangroves or other structures, that may require the ‘guide’ to dislodge or re-tie the line and hook as a result. ‘UNACCEPTABLE IN MY BOOK’! People expect to experience catching their own fish from ‘start to finish’. At least all of mine do. Moreover, many fishing guides (Charter Captains) want to keep clients who want to learn to fish, ‘in the dark’ and not share effective fishing techniques, locations, or

what to look for in regards to estuary ‘make up’. This brings me to my ‘story’ of the REWARDS OF A PROFESSIONAL GUIDE. As ‘Captain for Hire’ on other vessels (inshore and offshore), I have dedicated myself to teach anglers and ‘wanna-be-anglers’ to improve and to become good fishermen and fisher-ladies by showing them first-hand techniques that I use on a daily basis to ensure success on fishing adventures. Following is just one of my many rewarding experiences from those I have assisted over the years. Recently, my 1st Mate, Vicki and I were invited to join clients (turned friends), Dan and Laurie Kubal from Newton, Iowa aboard their new 26ft. offshore Key West boat for a day

of grouper fishing. I met Dan and Laurie a number of years ago when they hired me aboard their first vessel, a 23ft. Key West, to show them how to safely navigate the area, as well as some simple fishing techniques and locations that would assure them of some great, memorable times together on the water. We initially started by fishing for seatrout, Spanish mackerel and pompano on the grass flats, then progressed to reef and pelagic species offshore. Dan is a full time ‘Professional Crop Duster’ (Pilot) who lives on the edge from June to September ensuring our nation’s crop growers a successful season for the marketplace. He is a natural outdoorsman. He and Laurie have a home in Cape Coral. They are hard workers and enjoy their winter months on the water fishing. Being from the Midwest, neither of them initially knew which type of fishing would best fit their lifestyle. Nonetheless, after a couple of different vessels, they settled on offshore and acquired the new Key West boat, powered by two 300 Yamaha engines. Dan is a navigator and is a natural at studying topography maps and assessing areas using sonar that will most likely hold fish. Dan and Laurie have spent the better part of two years striving to catch grouper and other species offshore. They are not unique in that regard, except for the recent success they have had on virtually every long range offshore adventure they have undertaken, backed by pictures for evidence. On our recent invite to spend a day with them on a run 40 miles offshore, we experienced ‘first-hand’ their success in catching porgies, snappers and big grouper. I must say, ‘BEST GROUPER DAY I HAVE EVER HAD’! We all caught our limit of red grouper, together with a number of porgies, vermillion and lane snappers. I learned some things from Dan and Laurie as a result of their tenacity, hard work and determination to find and catch their target fish---Big Grouper! The biggest reward for me is that they gave me the credit for their fishing successes. It is my goal, as a fishing guide and charter captain, to assist all anglers to become better, regardless of their current level of experience. On the Fly by Capt. Mike Manis t’s easy to consider this spring Iexperienced in southwest Florida; but, I’ve enough cold snaps

to realize that winter has a way of hanging around longer than we’d like. Even worse, some years it feels like spring never arrives and we go straight into summer. Mostly, we can count on some wind. No matter what Mother Nature dishes out, the area is still in transition and the fish are more active. For starters, it ‘s been a cool winter and many of our redfish and snook have pushed their way up many of the creek systems outside larger flats. Working the outside edges of these areas are one of my favorite places to throw a fly. Keep in mind, it’s not just the creek edges that’ll hold fish; they can be found cruising up and down the shoreline for hundreds of yards adjacent to the actual creek. What I really like is that there are no shortage of spots like this throughout all our bays and sounds that surround the harbor. Because of this combination, outer shorelines and wind, I like a nine-weight as it really helps punch through the wind. I also like a weight forward floating line rigged with a nine-foot

leader tapered down to 20 lb. test. This tippet size helps keep me out of trouble near the bushes. I’ve been tying leaders with a saltwater monofilament leader material instead of fluorocarbon. It’s less expensive, plenty strong, and being a bit more supple makes it easier to work with. Water temperature will dictate bait availability and consequently my choice of flies. If it warms up and scaled sardines move in from deeper water, I’ll throw more baitfish imitations. Here, a Puglisi mangrove baitfish or backcountry brown is good. I also like deceiver patterns. If it stays cool, I’ll stick with clousers tied in natural tan, olive, and brown colors. When the wind does lie down, don’t hesitate to take a look outside the passes. Bonita and Spanish mackerel could be anywhere not far from the beach between Captiva and Gasparilla Pass. Keep an eye out for the birds as there’s a good chance they’ll be picking up bait that these aggressive fish are crashing at the surface. During one of these frenzies, it’s relatively easy to get close to the school and it’s a great place to throw a fly. This is a great opportunity to use all those flies you tied and figured they were not worth throwing. In fact, you don’t want to use good flies. Both these species will tear them up. Moreover, without a small piece of wire as tippet, the mackerel will break you off more times than not. Too, that nine-weight will come in handy on a bonita as it’ll probably get you into the backing. Until next month, good tides. Captain Michael Manis is a U.S.G.C. to your time on the water. Some things are mandated by law; every kayak must have a life jacket (PDF) on board and a sound devise such as a whistle, bell or horn. A 360° white light is required when operating between sunset and sunrise. Many states give kayaks, canoes and sailboats absolute control when encountering motorized craft, in that they must give way to the non-motorized vessel. Here in Florida, a motorized vessel in a marked channel or inlet has the right of way, as they may not be able to give way due to grounding. Ultimately it is your responsibility to ensure that your craft is safe from collision. I mention this as kayakers are generally more relaxed, focused on the natural environment or fishing and less aware of the rules for boating. Most motorized boat operators will give kayakers a wide berth, even slowing down to lessen their wake’s effect, but be assured that most operators will not ground their vessel to avoid you in a narrow channel! If you’re fishing with a group, try crossing channels as a group so that you’re more visible and remember boats have a very fast closing rate so it may surprise you and them! Many boat operators see us as a nuisance, so the I believe the burden is on us to remain vigilant on the water. Offshore kayaking is a whole different can of worms and requires a whole new mindset. When preparing to go deep, consider that your little craft will be insignificant to the other boats and may, at times, disappear between swells! Tall orange, red or yellow flags including a light attached to the rear of your kayak will make you more visible and when purchasing a new kayak consider bright colors and avoid blue or green camo. Additional equipment should include an air horn, portable marine radio and a GPS type navigation system. Be vigilant of all boat traffic and be prepared to sound off or give way if they don’t see you. Some of the unwritten rules when kayak fishing include how close to fish around other kayakers. Obviously if someone is in “your” spot you shouldn’t pull up to them and start fishing, unless of course they invite you. Most kayakers know that you can’t simply move way off, so there is a certain amount of acceptance that you’ll both be fishing the same area. When you see someone working a shoreline, avoid jumping ahead of them as you wouldn’t like the same done to you. If you come across a large flat and see a group of kayakers in a fairly spread out group, be observant as they may be working a school of tarpon or redfish, so try to avoid traveling through them. Also, never tie off to a buoy unless you want to encounter an enraged commercial fisherman! Come by the shop at 4120 Pine Island Rd. Fishin’ Frank by Capt. Frank Hommema ishing in the ICW, FWaterway, or Intracoastal has been

great and continues to be good, but how can this be? The fish were all poisoned and everything was dead as red tide and blue-green algae covered everything, everywhere. Well maybe while there was no red tide in Charlotte Harbor proper, there were bad out-breaks in the ICW or A.K.A. And then right after, it filled up with fish. Why- How? Well it could be several reasons. Let’s start with some maybes; red tide can clean water of many algae and bacteria so the water can be cleaner after a red tide, but I do not think that’s the reason. We did have some rain, so maybe the fish liked the saltier waters, no as summer time the Harbor is very, very fresh and the fish are still there. By the way that is the reason we had no red tide in Charlotte Harbor - the water was too fresh for red tide to live in. Red tide only lives in real salt water. So, maybe the temperature and now this might be a real thing, The water this year is at least 10 degrees colder than average and the water down 6 feet or more stays a more constant temp, warmer in the winter, cooler in the summer months. So with the deep water of the ICW and the shallow flats with dark green grass right next to the deep water, in the morning the fish will be laying up in the deeper warmer water and as the sun beats down the fish will move into the shallows to warm up and feed. Yes the water warmed by the sun gets all of the tiny little bait things moving about to feed and that gets the fish feeding. But I would have to say that the reason I believe the fish are so thick along the ICW areas is that the shrimp are migrating out of the harbor and into the gulf. Thousands upon thousands of shrimp a day are leaving the Harbor. A shrimp is not a strong swimmer and when they wish to leave they want move under the cover of darkness, as every single thing on the planet wants to eat them, hiding in the dark is a smart thing to do. But not being strong swimmers they dig into the bottom on in-coming tides and swim up into the water on out-going tides, hitching a ride with the tide as it leaves, smart idea for a creature that is only slightly smarter than a rock. So any way, the ICW and the flats close by are full of shrimp and that is why I think there are so many fish there. And of course saying that, what would be the best bait to use? Why yes indeed, match the hatch theory, use shrimp and this would be my best advice for the near shore reefs as the shrimp are trying to get to 60+ feet of water and are traveling past all of the near shore reefs. You can also say hi to the hundreds of shrimp boats out there from almost every state on the gulf, but Florida. Yes they come here as the shrimping in their states are closed and only Florida does not close commercial shrimping. More on that on another day. Fishing Adventures

Trolling is a great way to target Spanish and king mackerel. For the Spanish I like to use a spoon and jig combo, usually a white tail and a silver spoon. Using a 3’ piece of fifty-pound mono, tie the jig on one end and the spoon on the other. Then take the rod that you will be using and hook the spoon into the hook ring or the bottom guide on the rod. Then hook the jig into the next guide. Pull the line tight and form a loop where you tie it and add a swivel where you will attach the fishing line. This keeps the hooks secure while under way in the boat. When you find the mackerel cast this rig back about 75’ behind the boat. If your lures keep skipping on the surface, add a one, two, or three-ounce egg weight, to get it down just enough. Check the drag and have it snug but not tight, you may have two fish on at one time and you don’t want to lose your line. Usually two of these rigs trolling will keep you busy when you drive around the school as they are feeding. Be sure to look closely, there could be some small kings mixed in the school too, sometimes it is difficult to tell. For the kings I like to use a number one planer with a spoon that matches the size of the bait in the area. I have learned to put wire in front and behind the planer and your spoon. This helps from losing the whole rig when a big fish attacks. And between the planer and the spoon I like to use 8’ of fifty-pound fishing line where you would attach the spoon to the planer. I like to pull these close to the boat (about 30’). If you have help on the boat you can pull all this at the same time; you need to keep close eye on your lines so they don’t tangle as you troll around the bait balls. Also, this month the snappers should be feeding on some of the close reefs in forty to fifty feet, and out to one hundred feet. Try making chum balls with sand and chum like they do in the Keys to attract the snapper. I like to anchor just on the edge of the structure I want to fish and chum and pull the fish away from the snags and ledges. This will help with loosing hooks, weights, and fishing line. If you are not into making a big mess with the sand on your boat, you can hang a chum bag from the front of the boat. When you travel out stop in an area that you can catch some squirrel fish for bait. I always have squid, shrimp, sardines, and some other frozen bait to use first to get the bite fired up. After the bite slows, then use your live baits. This works well to catch some of the bigger fish that are laying back. I have a new member in my fleet, a thirty-foot SCARAB with twin outboards, permits for up to six anglers, with the bigger boat I will be able to do eight-hour trips traveling out to thirty miles or so. arch in Southwest Florida is typically a transitional month, shifting from our Winter patterns to our Spring patterns, mother nature's mood swings keep us on edge. Every time I check the weather forecast I hold my breath praying not to see an encroaching blue line pushing our way. A week or two of 80+ highs and light tropical breezes, thwarted by a wicked cold front causing the fish to tuck tail and bolt for safe harbor. February was extremely pleasant and stable for the bulk of the month, hopefully that trend will continue into March. The backwater bite has been hot. The large breeder sheepshead have been hit or miss with the swinging water temps, but none the less that species is being brought over the rails in high numbers. The redfish bite remains the best I’ve seen in 9 years, with multiple fish being caught on almost every trip. The trout bite is fantastic in the open bays around the south end of Keewadin, you just have to weed through the multitude of ladyfish to get to them. Look for the pompano and Spanish mackerel to start showing back up in large numbers around area passes and bars. March madness to me is all about his majesty, the Silver King. The tarpon is the hardest fighting inshore game fish, bar-none. He will push any angler to the breaking point, then circle back around to collect his salty tears as homage. As our inshore water temp average reaches 74°, our resident tarpon will slip out of their winter haunts and dormant state and emerge into feeding mode in our inner bays. Look for tarpon laid up on the surface sunning for exciting sight fishing opportunities. Now for the main event, the tarpon migration. Every spring a biological need to reproduce triggers these fish to school up in pods and move to their spawning grounds. The migration route runs right through SW Florida, making our near-shore waters a tarpon super highway. This migration brings the best opportunity for an angler to land that fish of a lifetime. The timing of this migration is a closely guarded secret to many guides and each has his own superstitions. One tip I’ll share with you is too keep an eye out for the white butterflies, and an ear to the sea. Best advice I can give you. Hire a local pro, these fish are no joke, they are strong and unpredictable and if handled improperly can cause serious injuries to themselves or the angler. They are a protected, delicate sportfish that require proper gear and technique to control. Don't miss your chance to make a memory that will last for ever. Till next month -STAY SALTY MY FRIENDS.

Beautiful, Inc. volunteers from planting sea oats at Lovers Key State Park. Volunteers dedicated four hours to planting 2,000 sea oats covering 15,750 square feet in an effort to help stabilize the beach and provide a habitat for native critters. Sea oats are the plants with the large plumes found along the beach that may look like weeds, but they are a vital part of the ecosystem. Playing an important role in coastal conservation, the plantâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s massive root system is capable of holding soil and sand in place during extreme weather like hurricanes and tropical storms. The sea oat leaves and stems also trap wind-blown sand which helps to maintain the sand dunes. The sand dunes protect the coast from erosion during high winds and storm surges. Beach vegetation and dunes serve as a critical component to maintaining beach stability. Keep Lee County Beautiful, Inc. is dedicated to help protecting our beaches in our community. The Great Calusa Blueway

arpon Point Marina in Cape Coral is a paddle launch site T that has great facilities, a ship store, plenty of parking and easy access to water with an abundance of fish. If you haven’t

launched from here yet, I highly recommend giving it a try as it appears to be overlooked by many paddlers. When you arrive at Tarpon Point, turn right at Pinchers Crab Shack and follow the signs to the marina. Check into the ship’s store/harbormaster’s office and they will let you know where to park. There is a small fee to launch. You can also pick up snacks, drinks, bait or rent kayaks and SUPs if needed. I was able to park near their floating paddle craft launch. The launch does not have a ramp. Paddlers with heavy fishing rigs may need assistance getting their boat down on a low tide. Immediately outside of the marina is Glover Bight. This area is a Slow Speed Zone, but paddlers should exercise caution because of heavy boat traffic. Many paddlers head east and follow a continually narrowing mangrove tunnel until they have to turn around. This is about a one and a half mile paddle after returning to the marina. A half mile west of the marina is the entrance to Jewfish Creek. The creek is named for a species of grouper that is today called goliath grouper. There are many twists and turns on the creek, but it is open and easy to navigate. I admit that I was paying more attention to the birds and fish and got turned around a couple times. It was easy to get back on track though. There are a few branches of the creek that lead to small lakes. When entering one of these, I spooked baitfish to the edges. The water under the mangroves came alive, as snook ambushed the frightened baitfish. This continued as I paddled across the lake and considered going back to the ship’s store to rent fishing gear. In addition to the snook, I saw several nicesized redfish in the creek. In a little under a mile, you can access the Caloosahatchee River or turn northwest and explore more of the creek and small lakes. Because of windy conditions, I remained in the protection of the creek and returned the way I came (more or less). After your paddle, there are a few boater-friendly dining options in Tarpon Point. Pinchers Crab Shack has outdoor seating adjacent to the marina. Tarpon Point has great facilities, easy access and protected water with a lot of fish. This is a spot all paddlers should consider. starting to look like we have made it through another SWFL Iupt’swinter. The longer days will start bringing our water temps above the 70 degree mark. For the anglers that are not in the loop, that’s the magic number. Well if you want my opinion it is! That seems to be the time when the little critters that live in the grass and oysters get moving around. Well when the stuff that bigger fish feeds on is moving, guess what? Yep the bigger fish also start moving around. One of the biggest movers will be snook. These guys, for the most part, having been laying low waiting on warmer water. I would recommend looking for feeding snook close to their winter haunts early in the month. Slower baits such as large shrimp and pinfish will be your best baits. However if the weather continues on a cooling trend, these guys will start to move onto the flats. Look for points with good tidal flow and flats adjacent to the mangroves with potholes. I’m sure everyone has heard of the severe red tide we endured last summer? Well due to that there will be no open Snook season on Charlotte Harbor this spring. So please handle these guys with caution, we need this fishery to make a strong recovery. Another local fish that will be on the move with the warming water will be trout. These guys will making the move back out to our local flats. I look for areas that are what I call checkered bottom. What I mean by this is a mixture of sand and grass. Trout like to ambush prey on the edges of these bottom changes.

One of the most effective ways to locate feeding trout is to drift. Covering a large flat this way can be very effective at locating feeding fish. For you artificial guys the spring trout bite can be great. Early in the morning top water is my favorite way to target bigger trout. As the sun gets higher, I will switch to a soft plastic. Often overlooked during our spring is Spanish mackerel. These guys will begin to make their migration north this time of year. If you have some junior anglers you want to introduce to fishing these are your guys. Not only do they fight, you can keep them busy catching fish. Look for large flocks of seagulls and terns in the harbor and passes. Trolling small spoons and buck tails will get the job done. Fort Myers Beach Tarpon Hunters Club by Steve Johnson he Fort Myers Beach Tarpon T Hunters Club is the oldest Tarpon fishing club in the world.

Established in 1962 with the principal objective of furthering the grand sport of Tarpon fishing with sportsmanship and safe boating practices. The club is committed to the preservation of tarpon and the conservation of their habitat, while following the International Game Fish Success! Association rules for catch and release. The Club targets the “Silver King” throughout the year during weekend “hunts”. Hunt winners earn awards and total catch information for the year is tracked for our membership award banquet. We host an Orientation Hunt for new members, a Rookie Hunt to pair experienced anglers with novice anglers and a Ladies Hunt, just to name a few. Boat ownership is not required, as members enjoy fishing together. The Club meets on the first Wednesday of each month, in the Bonita Bill’s Waterfront Café community room on Fort Myers Beach from January-October. Aside from club business, we discuss historic catch locations, current tarpon movement

W

ith a claim of being the oldest city in the United States, St. Augustine, Fla. is certainly rich in history. Stroll the streets and you’ll see Spanish colonial architecture, beautiful stretches of sandy beach and ample parklands awaiting exploration. Head out on the water, though, and you’ll also discover tremendous inshore fishing. “Redfish and trout action is really good in our inshore waters during the spring season,” said charter skipper Tommy Derringer of Inshore Adventures (www.Inshoreadventures.net; 904-377-3734). “There’s only a couple of months here when it’s clear enough to sight

fish, so you really want to take advantage of it. The action begins in January and lasts through March and into April. This is shallow water casting up on the flats and back in our numerous feeder creeks. Basically, any creek or flat between the Francis and Mary Usina Bridge and the Palm Valley Bridge is worth a shot.” According to Derringer, reds are easiest to spot on a dropping tide. The water is still pretty cold this time of year, so areas that warm quickly are where you’ll want to start. Look for oyster bars or shells on the bottom as the biggest draws, but if the tide gets really low depressions eventually hold most of the reds. Typically, inshore redfish in this area are “slots” weighing 2 to about 10 pounds. Casting a small soft-plastic minnow or grub with a light jig head is a productive and sporty way to get in on the fun. “You want to use a 2500 size spinning reel with a 7-foot medium-light action rod, 10-pound test braid and a lightweight white or chartreuse lure because fish can be spooky in the shallows,” noted Derringer. “Make long casts so as not to crowd your quarry, and choose a lure that lands with a soft splat rather than a big splash. Live shrimp and minnows work well, too, as long as they are presented gently.” If you can’t isolate reds, Derringer suggested backing out into the main channel of the Intracoastal Waterway and working edges and pockets for sea trout. This bite is best from late March into April as the water warms up. Try a MirrOdine Suspending Twitchbait, a soft plastic paddle-tail, or a live shrimp suspended beneath a float, and you’ll see plenty of action. Most of the trout here measure 16 to 20 inches, but if you pass on these and keep looking you might come across pods of bigger fish with some lunkers in the 5- to 8-pound class. If trailering your own boat, Derringer recommends launching at the Vilano Landing Boat Ramp. You can get bait and lures right across the street at The Bait Shack (904-217-3486). MASSIVE MARLIN By Craig Sutton

T

he action in northwest Costa Rica is outstanding. All five boats of our boats were on the water in January, with 83 trips logged for the month. Yellowfin tuna and dorado are a constant this time of year, but the team also fought a bunch of massive marlin. We released nine blue marlin, 11 striped marlin, three black marlin and 78 sailfish. We also melted a lot of ice with 256 dorado and 158 yellowfin tuna. The 32-foot Harvester was deep in the battle on Jan. 14, as client Kevin Poindexter battled a sweet blue marlin. The marlin was the headliner, but it was supported by an excellent sailfish release. They rounded out the day with a dorado and a yellowfin. Good thing, because it’s easy to work up a big appetite when catching all day long! The Adventurer is a 23-foot panga with the fishing tool of a boat twice her size and a bad attitude to match. This year we have added a Photo by Andy Blackledge bottom machine, tuna tube and outriggers.

Jeff Capen made history on Jan. 15 with the second-ever marlin release on the panga. A blue marlin release is a magnificent achievement on any boat, let alone the sneaky 23-foot switchblade. It’s proof you don’t need a big boat to catch big fish in Costa Rica! FishingNosara hall-of-famer and northeast FishingNosara representative Mark Cooney pulled off an amazing fishing feat with Capt. David on Jan. 18. What, you’ve never released a sailfish on a 23-foot panga with a tiller-steered motor? Legendary Texas angler Jerome McKown added to his record on Jan. 27 with a gaggle of sailfish releases with Capt. Carlos of the 32-foot Discoverer. Great work by Mate Kevin to safely wrangle and release these monsters. Of course these boys weren’t going hungry, thanks to a half-dozen excellent dorado scores. The flagship Wanderer is celebrating her 10th year of fishing in these waters, and one must marvel at the man who has commanded her from Day 1. It is no exaggeration that Capt. William and the Wanderer ran more trips last year than any boat in all of Central America. FishingNosara hall-of-famers Catherine Chase and Ron LaGro added to their legend on Jan. 19 with Capt. William. A striped marlin led off a great day of action. After Catherine’s release, Ron added a sailfish release. They rounded out the morning with a nice stack of dorado filets. ere are some of my favorite fish to eat in the lagoon along with some tips on how to catch them. It’s ok to eat fish from the lagoon, but do it in moderation. 1) Pompano: This silver-blue slab has some of the best white meat. It’s a cold-water fish and is usually caught between December and April on a variety of lures and live bait. Fish small jigs and pompano jigs around shallow drop-offs in 3 to 5 feet of water. Also look for them around bridges and deeper cuts. For live bait, use shrimp or sand fleas. 2) Snook: You can only keep one snook between 28 and 32 inches and only in certain months of the year. Closed season for snook is Dec. 15-Jan. 31 and June 1-Aug. 31. Snook have excellent flaky white meat. Snook can be caught on a variety of lures including topwaters, jigs and live bait. They prefer structure (piers, bridges, mangroves) and feed more actively at night. 3) Flounder: Often overlooked or targeted as table-fare, this species of fish has two eyes on one side of its heads and lies on the bottom waiting for bait to come by. I’ve caught flounder in the lagoon up to 5 pounds and sometimes three or four on an outing. Flounder love jigs and live bait, especially shrimp (live or dead). Fish for them on flats around bridges and on shallow flats in 3 to 4 feet of water. 4) Black drum and red drum (redfish): Black drum love any sort of crustacean, from shrimp to blue crabs and can also be caught on cut bait (ladyfish). Fish for them with bait around bridge pilings or under piers. Redfish will eat bait, and they’ll also take lures. Try a 4-inch jig with a paddle tail or a jig tipped with shrimp. 5) Snapper: I’ve fished for mangrove snapper (10” min) and lane snapper (8” min), and they can be caught easily on small jigs, jigs tipped with shrimp and shrimp. Fish around piers and structure and deeper areas on the flats. 6) Sheepshead and tripletail: Sheepshead are members of porgy family and eat crustaceans and barnacles. Shrimp, fiddler crabs and crabs are favorite baits. Fish for them on the bottom around piers and bridges. Tripletail will hit jigs, but fishing shrimp around buoys and floating markers is your best bet. 7) Mackerel and bluefish. Both species are fast and will hit any lure or live bait. I prefer mackerel to bluefish. They are cold-water fish and move into the lagoon during the winter months. They can be caught around structure, especially bridges with moving water. ranks of the invasive lionfish? Lionfish throughout the affected regions of the Western Atlantic, Gulf of Mexico and some Caribbean island locations have all documented nasty-looking lesions or ulcers on their flesh. Currently, only a relatively small percentage of their populations are showing these signs. We have been following this event (lionfish showing skin lesions) for nearly two years now. Several researchers have been studying samples of ulcerated fish from many different locations. A relatively small percentage of lionfish are affected across the invaded areas. The northern Gulf of Mexico seemed to be a bit of a hot-spot about a year ago, but reports of skin lesions have been waning lately. It is suspected that some lionfish did not survive the “infection,” while others appeared to have survived with healed scars and seem to be doing well. These lesions are very similar in appearance to several other common fish-related skin diseases, but scientists have not been able to pin it down exactly. Should anyone encounter a lionfish that has signs of these lesions, report it to the FWC. MyFWC.com/FishKill and provide them with the following info: 1. Location 2. ishing has long been a tradition passed down through generations. From great-grandparents who manufactured tools and tackle out of the most basic materials all the way down to my generation’s tech-savvy methods of fishing, we all share something in common. The tug on the end of the line, the organized chaos and landing the fish are all part of the thrill that fishing entails. how much of an impact conservation makes on the livelihood of the sport. When I was young, learning to let a fish go to swim another day was difficult, especially after spending so much time trying to catch it. It wasn’t until later when I understood the importance of catch and release and how it impacts the future of an ecosystem. Conservation has been a popular topic in recent times, with the Florida sugar companies being in the spotlight. Everyone has seen pictures of the widespread fish kills that devastated Florida’s Gulf Coast. With so many people dependent upon that fishery, catch and release along with other methods of conservation are a necessity for restoring this fishing landmark. Most seasoned fisherman agree that success isn’t completely dependent on how many fish one catches or how big they are. Success lies in the challenges that accompanied the fish and how the angler overcame them. The tremendous stories that arise from these outings are a true testament to the will and perseverance it takes. The ultimate display of appreciation comes in the form of releasing the fish back into its habitat. While I love fish tacos as much as the next person, I find it more fulfilling to watch a fish swim away, hopefully to be caught by someone else one day. The technology nowadays enables us to easily capture parts of the adventure. Looking through my camera roll, I not only see pictures of the fish I’ve caught, but also hundreds of stories of how I caught them. Envisioning a future that includes fishing comes with the responsibility of speaking up for the speechless: our waterways and its tenants. Educating people about the value of catch and release makes it possible for there to be a future in fishing. Your short-term sacrifices now will one day light up the face of a young angler yet to know what their new favorite hobby has in store. I

f you’re an angler who enjoys following up a day on mountain trout streams with a refreshing craft beverage or two, cast your attention to the Blue Ridge mountain town of Hendersonville. This North Carolina town, about 22 miles south of Asheville, offers miles of stocked trout waters, as well as the popular Hendersonville Cheers! Trail. The two resources make it possible to spend the day catching three types of trout – rainbow, brown and brook – while spending an evening exploring three types of craft beverages – beer, wine and hard cider. First, the fishing part. North Mills River is the prime trout stream in the Hendersonville area. The river’s 4-mile section of delayed harvest waters receives an annual infusion of 11,000 trout from N.C. Wildlife, divvied between brook, rainbow and brown. Spring is a great time to fly fish the delayed harvest waters of North Mills River because no trout have been harvested since Sept. 30. Another hot spot for trout fishing is just across the Henderson County line toward Brevard. The Davidson River offers miles of public trout waters that receive annual stockings of 16,500 fish. Other lesser-known spots for fishing near Hendersonville include

three streams on the eastern side of Henderson County, about 20 to 30 minutes from downtown. Rocky Broad River has a 1.2-mile stretch of hatchery support waters from Rocky River Lane to the Rutherford County line near Chimney Rock, while Cane Creek, near the Fletcher community, has 1.5-mile stretch of hatchery supported waters. For those who really want a unique experience, Little River in DuPont State Recreational Forest provides not only a scenic setting for trout fishing, but also a unique one. Delayed harvest waters flow through undisturbed mountains and over several notable waterfalls. Those waterfalls were immortalized on Hollywood’s silver screen in The Last of the Mohicans, as well as the backdrop for the exploits of Katniss Everdeen in the original Hunger Games movie. When the fishing is done, the Cheers! Trail awaits. The trail is one of North Carolina’s best, featuring 16 craft producers offering a variety of experiences. Beer fans love Sierra Nevada’s tasting room, which is one of the largest on the East Coast and features an expansive patio and outdoor amphitheater, while Bold Rock Hard Cider has emerged as a national leader in the hard cider industry and regularly hosts live music (indoors and outdoors), along with cidery tours and a food truck. Several craft producers on the trail create small-batch beverages prized for their quality and originality. Three breweries – Southern Appalachian, Triskelion and Guidon – are within a few blocks of each other in the Depot District, while Sanctuary Brewing Co. is only a few blocks away on Main Street. Sanctuary is pet-friendly with a commitment to pet rescue. Three wineries produce high-quality wines from European varietals. The newest – Point Lookout Vineyards – is located atop a 3,000-foot mountain with panoramic views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. I am often asked when is the best time to plant fruiting plants. My answer is usually the same; the best time is 20 years ago or today. The second best time to plant is during the winter months. Plants are dormant, and can be easily shipped and planted with no stress on the plant because there is not a lot of maintenance once the plant or tree has been planted. Simply dig a good hole, water thoroughly

at planting, and take the rest of the winter off. Even though there are no signs of growth above ground, the root systems will have time to get adjusted to their new location and begin to initiate new root growth. s past president and current board member of IUSA (the organization that ratifies world records for spearfishing), I get to share the excitement of big fish applications. The entire IUSA board was amazed by a recent submission. We received word that Luis Viyella had speared a 480-pound yellowfin off the Dominican Republic on Dec. 23, 2018. If approved, this fish would not only be the new spearfishing world record, but it would also beat the current IGFA All-Tackle rod-and-reel record! The All-Tackle stands at 427 pounds, held by angler Guy Yocom and caught off Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Viyella supplied the required photos of the fish, the measurements, the weighing, and the certified scale. He provided witnesses and documented the “Story of the Hunt” which was well-written and riveting. Viyella was new to freediving and bluewater hunting but accompanied by an experienced friend. They were targeting wahoo that day when the tunas showed up. He was excited when his buddy speared a 125-pound yellowfin. As requested, Viyella added a second shot to the fish—a common practice to secure the fish and make the extraction quicker and easier. A bigger tuna showed up, but Viyella’s speargun was already discharged and embedded in the 125-pound tuna, so he called out for his new Daryl Wong speargun from the boat. It wasn’t a bluewater gun, and it wasn’t the ideal set up, but he needed to act quickly. Viyella attached a line and float to the reel gun, dove down, and fired a well-placed shot into the tuna. After attaching additional floats, he made headway in raising the tuna toward the surface. His buddy dove down and placed a second shot to the head, helped manage the lines, and kept sharks at bay until it was landed—all the things a good buddy does.

News of this magnificent fish traveled fast. Viyella was told that, if approved, his fish would eclipse the current spearfishing record of 353 pounds. During the application process, he learned the rules the hard way. In order to qualify, one must shoot and land the fish without assistance from others. It was heartbreaking for Viyella and the board, but his catch is still outstanding, and IUSA awarded a meritorious award. Viyella accepted it with grace and gratitude. He said, “Inside the boat, we realized it was a very extraordinary, giant yellowfin tuna. I cannot describe our feelings of gratitude to God, our emotions, joy, sense of achievement, cheers, hugs, screams of happiness. It had been the most amazing day at sea, and the most exciting catch ever, and I had caught, on rod and reel, a 900-pound blue marlin and 600+ pound swordfish before. This bluewater apnea spearfishing catch was a higher dimension, another level of joy and sense of achievement. Glory goes to God for His love and generosity.” Amen to that, Mr. Viyella! May you continue to be blessed with that same sense of wonder and joy, for that is the real treasure of the sea. Anglers Seek To Cement Legacies At 2019 Bassmaster Classic

T

he 2019 Bassmaster Classic, scheduled for March 15-17 on the Tennessee River, will feature the usual mix of established pro fishing superstars and hungry young pros who are destined to be the stars of tomorrow. The 52 anglers converging on Knoxville will be gunning for the largest share of the $1 million prize fund, and they’ll be aiming to establish their angling legacy by winning the most important title in professional fishing. Among the field are eight former Classic winners, including four-time champion Kevin VanDam of Kalamazoo, Mich., and defending champion Jordan Lee of Grant, Ala., who last year became one of only three anglers to claim back-to-back wins in the event. Seven of the pros have hoisted the Toyota Bassmaster Angler of

the Year trophy, including 2018 AOY winner Justin Lucas of Guntersville, Ala., and Aaron Martens of Leeds, Ala., who has claimed the award three times. “The Classic is a showcase for some of the most accomplished bass anglers in the world,” said B.A.S.S. CEO Bruce Akin. “You’ll have veteran pros out there who’ve experienced the huge stage that is the Classic and excelled in that environment in the past. But you’ll also have some young guys who are just chomping at the bit to make a name for themselves. “That’s one of the most exciting things about the Classic—it literally will change someone’s life forever.” Anglers hungry for first-time Classic glory include Florida’s Drew Benton, Tennessee’s Brandon Lester and Arizona’s Clifford Pirch — just to name a few. T

he Blue Wild Ocean Adventure Expo is south Florida’s premier watersports expo. It is coming to the Greater Fort Lauderdale/ Broward County Convention Center Saturday and Sunday, April 27-28, with 65,000 square feet of exhibitors and activities for water lovers. The indoor event attracts 5,000 attendees and more than 150 exhibitors specializing in fishing and spearfishing, scuba and freediving, surfing and paddleboarding, boats and kayaks, underwater photo and video, adventure travel, beach apparel and more. The event features one of the most extensive marine art exhibits in the country. Daily interactive workshops hosted by industry experts offer proven techniques and tips including fishing techniques, speargun rigging, fish filleting, knot-tying and more. The popular Kids Zone offers free face painting, art classes and crab races. On Saturday, April 27, the show will run from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., with an after party from 7 to 9 p.m. On Sunday, April 28, show hours are 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Admission is $20 a day and includes entry into the Saturday night Blue Wild After Party. Baja’s Inshore Action

On The East Cape

J

ust looking at a map will tell you the Sea of Cortez is a fish trap. Separated from the Pacific Ocean by Mexico’s nearly 800-mile long Baja California Peninsula, it’s a 62,000 square mile canyon that drops to depths approaching 10,000 feet. The sportfishing out of Cabo San Lucas, on the Peninsula’s southern tip is legendary. It is a bustling destination where marlin, sailfish and tuna abound. But Capt. Jimmy Nelson, host of the TV show Livin’ The Dream, pointed to a quieter destination and some awesome fishing up the Peninsula’s East Cape. Out of the Buena Vista Beach Resort about an hour’s drive north of Cabo, the Sea of Cortez drops to 1,000-foot depths just a few hundred yards off sand beaches. There’s a fleet of sportfishing boats waiting to take anglers offshore to chase all the big pelagics, and the inshore action borders on unbelievable. Even shorebased fishermen can catch some species typically associated with long runs offshore. At a place renowned for billfish, Nelson said the inshore action is as much of a reason to go as the marlin. “You never know what you’re going to get. There’s all kinds of things that will be right there on the edge,” Nelson said. “Roosterfish, African pompano, cubera snapper, Sierra mackerel, even dolphin, wahoo and yellowfin tuna will hit your popper right off the beach.” Never knowing what’s on the end of the line requires anglers to gear up. This is not the same as inshore fishing in the Gulf of Mexico or Atlantic. Nelson said casting 8-inch poppers or live lookdowns from shore is a ton of fun and requires 8000 size spinning reels. A big cubera snapper slamming your popper is a fight you’ll never forget. “It’s a rush,” he said. “You’re catching a bottomfish on top, so they go straight down to the bottom. You have to gear up with some pretty heavy tackle.” Trolling just off the beach is another tactic that puts anglers on a surprising array of the Pacific’s best sportfish. Big roosterfish might be primary target, but again, you never know what will eat when you’re pulling lookdowns and goggle eyes. Big yellowfin tuna have been known to surprise anglers just off the beaches, so 30 wide reels and heavy tackle are required. COASTALANGLERMAG.COM • THEANGLERMAG.COM
