ater temperatures are falling. King mackerel are on the move. Wherever they roam, fall is the time to catch kingfish during their annual migration south. In the Atlantic, from the Carolinas south along the Florida coast, kings are following bait to warmer waters. The same thing is going on in the Gulf of Mexico. Kingfish that summered in the northern Gulf are splitting up. Some head west down the Texas coast. Others move east along the Panhandle and down the west coast of Florida. Wherever you fish, the next few months offer the opportunity to connect with the movements of these mercury missiles as they mingle with resident populations. The prospect for drag-burning runs is out there for anglers who pay close attention to water temperatures and stay on the move until they find the fish. King mackerel are as temperature driven as any fish in the sea. When they’re marauding baitfish, they can be found close to shore on the beaches, passes and jetties, where even shore-bound anglers have a shot at them. But most of the larger kingfish hunt over nearshore reefs in 30- to 60-feet or deeper. Deep or shallow, they’ll seek out 68- to 73-degree temperatures where they are comfortable. Watch the water temperature charts, and fish by them. Find the right temperature and an abundance of baitfish, and putting out a spread of baits will tell you quickly if there are kingfish around. Live bait is always the best bet, especially for big smokers. The best bait will depend on where you fish and what baitfish are most prevalent. Pogies (menhaden), hardtails (blue runners), pilchards and threadfin herring are all good baits if they are present. The fall mullet runs offer an abundance of good bait. A lot of tournament and charter boats put a Spanish mackerel in a spread looking for a big bite. Most importantly, baitfish should be fresh. Catch the bait that is available with Sabikis or cast nets, keep it well-oxygenated and switch them frequently. Most kingfish rigs will use a mainline of 20- to 30-pound monofilament. Obviously, with those teeth, a wire leader is essential. You should go as heavy as the fish will let you get away with—depending on water clarity—but it must remain light enough for the bait to swim. A 24-inch, single-strand wire leader of 40-pound test is a starting point. Go lighter in clear water or with smaller baits; go heavier in dirty water or if you’re fishing big baits for big fish. Leaders can be made longer for security. Hooks should be matched to the size of the bait, and it’s wise to add a stinger hook on large baits. Whether anchored, drifting or slow-trolling, a fresh chum slick is a good idea. If a king doesn’t hit within 15 or 20 minutes, pick up and go find some that are biting. They shouldn’t be hard to find this time of year.

It’s the details I obsess about – the knots, the leaders, the water temperature, the boulders that might hold fish or punch a hole in a wood boat. I am “Obsessed by Details” or OBD. I
t doesn’t get much better than watching the sun peak above the horizon with a rod in hand while schools of redfish crash baitfish all around you. Many areas redfish frequent are in skinny water, and targeting them from a kayak allows access as well as an up close and personal adventure. Kayaks have come a long way since their inception. Thousands of years ago, natives of North America’s arctic built the first kayaks of whale bones and animal skins. They used them for hunting. Today’s plastics and a wave of interest in kayak fishing over
the last decade sparked advancements in kayaks manufactured specifically for fishing. Improvements in space, stability, comfort and maneuverability are just a few of the reasons these vessels are so attractive to anglers. Add to that some of the many options available, such as peddle assist, power poles for anchoring, bait wells and super comfortable seating with lumbar support, and you have a five-star fishing platform that provides access to very skinny water. When fishing from a kayak, lightweight gear is a fun and effective way to target redfish. Light gear offers a challenge when hooked up to 5-plus-pound fish, and it also gives an advantage when casting to distant fish, especially if using braided line. Redfish in skinny water can be caught using jig heads, shrimp under a popping cork, D.O.A. Shrimp and even topwater and suspending baits. This time of year, the mullet really start getting fired up as they start migrating. As redfish actively pursue their prey, casting a topwater plug early in the morning is a really exciting way to draw a strike. Leader material is important in this type of fishing since oyster beds will fray line. Check and replace the leader as needed so the big one never gets away. Kayak fishing has really offered up a unique and exciting way to explore many different types of water. verything we do in life carries risks, even going for a drive. Wear your seatbelt, learn to be a defensive driver, and life goes on. Spearfishing has risks too, but they are manageable. A lot of people ask, “What about sharks?” I tell them, “Sharks are like dogs. The vast majority are not a threat. In fact, it’s a privilege to see them in the water. You should enjoy the sight!” Unlike the Jaws movie era, most people now understand that sharks are not mindless monsters. They are beautiful creatures, and there’s many sightseeing opportunities for tourists and photographers. On the other hand, when you are spearfishing, you don’t want to be too cavalier and shoot fish in front of sharks. They are wild animals and should be respected. One should not spear in areas where shark feeding takes place or areas known to be “sharky.” Fortunately, sharks don’t appear out of nowhere and start munching on your leg; that is not their nature. However, it is their nature to be attracted to wounded fish. The vibration attracts them even more than the blood. This is one of several reasons to strive for the killshot on your prey. If you do not achieve that, it is wise to dispatch and place your fish on the boat as quickly as possible. It’s also best to keep moving along. Don’t stay in one spot, especially in the Bahamas. Assuming you’ve done everything possible to avoid an encounter, the next most important step is to dive with a buddy, stay aware, cover each other, and don’t stray too far from the boat. Bad situations tend to escalate gradually. If one diver maintains a watch while the other is dealing with their fish, you are less likely to have a surprise encounter. A good buddy will alert you, call the boat over, and make sure the fish is landed without incident. Sharks tend to make several passes before zeroing in on the target, so there should be plenty of time to land the fish before things escalate. Like dogs, they sense fear and will be more interested if you freak out. Stand your ground, face them, assume an aggressive posture and calmly exit the water. Here’s a summary: 1. When spearing, avoid shark encounters as much as possible. 2. Try to get killshots or dispatch the fish quickly and put it on the boat. Don’t carry a stringer. 3. Move from spot to spot, even if you haven’t seen a shark. 4. Dive as a buddy team and look out for each other after shooting fish. 5. Keep the boat nearby so you can quickly unload fish and/ or exit the water. 6. Do not give up the fish to a shark. That tends to escalate the situation. 7. Do not panic or run from a shark, face them with confidence, but exit when possible. Happy hunting and see you in the water!

oastal Conservation Association Florida (CCA Florida), Duke Energy and Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) have historically partnered on initiatives to enhance Florida’s fisheries, and the organizations are again joining forces to address the loss to the redfish population on the southwest coast as a result of red tide. The nonprofit CCA Florida, Duke Energy and FWC will be releasing over 10,000 Duke Energy hatchery-reared redfish following the Florida red tide bloom and when waters are determined to be safe, thanks to a donation from the Duke Energy Mariculture Center. “We’re all aware of the devastation the red tide has caused our fisheries and we’re thrilled to partner with Duke Energy for this amazing redfish stock enhancement initiative,” said Brian Gorski, CCA Florida Executive Director. “We’ve asked our members and anglers throughout the state to catch-and-release, but there’s more that needs to be done, and this partnership—as with our ongoing re-
lationship with Duke—will help to repopulate a fishery that’s iconic to our state.” The initiative will take place when the waters are determined to be clear of red tide and will include the release of 200 tagged adult (25- to 30-inch) redfish and 10,000 juvenile (4- to -6-inch) redfish into the waters of Manatee, Sarasota, Charlotte, Lee and Collier counties. “Duke Energy is committed to environmental stewardship,” said Eric Latimer, Duke Energy Florida Mariculture Center Manager. “Fish mortalities associated with the current red tide bloom in southwest Florida have broad impacts, both to our state’s interconnected biological systems and to the people that make a living from and enjoy our natural resources. We are proud to play a small part in the solution by restocking fish that will contribute to the overall restoration of the affected areas.” “We appreciate the valuable support from CCA Florida and Duke Energy in helping enhance our world class redfish fishery,” said Eric Sutton, FWC Executive Director. “This team effort will benefit conservation, outdoor recreation and the state’s economy in many ways.” In addition to the stocking enhancement initiative, CCA Florida and FWC are encouraging anglers to help all inshore populations by releasing their catch. This summer, CCA Florida launched the “Release Them For Tomorrow” campaign as a way to support several species’ growth through catch and release. “It’s going to take everyone doing their part to get our fisheries back to health,” said Gorski. oastal Conservation Association Florida (CCA Florida) is partnering with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) and Mote Marine Laboratory (Mote) to address the loss to the snook population on the southwest coast as a result of the red tide event. The two-year initiative includes raising and releasing 10,000 hatchery-reared juvenile snook along Florida’s southwest coast and will launch in April 2019 following the Florida red tide bloom and when waters are determined to be safe. Fundraising for the program, a cost of over $440,000, will include outreach to the community through an Adopt-A-Snook program and the formation of additional private-nonprofit partnerships. “Anyone who lives or fishes the southwest coast understands the devastation our fisheries are seeing from this red tide, and it’s our duty to address the issue,” said Brian Gorski, CCA Florida Executive Director. “Snook are an iconic fish to our state, and we are extremely excited and honored to partner with FWC and Mote to help recover
this fishery and enhance it for future generations.” Snook are one of the most sought after catches by anglers in southwest Florida, and they return to the same beaches to spawn annually during summer. Unfortunately, summer was also a peak time for red tide toxins along the beaches of Gasparilla and Little Gasparilla Islands. “The continuing impacts of red tide in southwest Florida are evident to all of us who call these communities our home,” said Dr. Michael P. Crosby, Mote president & CEO. “One of the potentially most devastating and highly visible impacts around Charlotte Harbor was to the spawning snook population. Many of the dead snook were laden with eggs to produce the next generation.” With support and partnership from CCA Florida and FWC, Mote will restock juvenile snook to specific, tidal-creek “nurseries” that would usually be supplied by spawning aggregations hit hard by the bloom. Each of the hatchery-reared snook will be tagged with passive integrated transponder (PIT) tags to allow Mote scientists to monitor and track the progress of the juveniles throughout the study, which includes monthly stocking efforts designed to elevate the system towards its carrying capacity. Mote’s experimental work has shown that the abundance of juvenile snook can nearly double in underutilized nursery habitats through stocking 10-month-old juveniles. In addition, ongoing Mote studies suggest that tagged, juvenile snook find some degree of refuge from red tide in tidal creek and riverine environments with fresher water less conducive to the red tide. In addition to the stocking, anglers are encouraged to help snook and other inshore populations by releasing their catch. wo fishing buddies from Pocatello, Idaho recently broke the catch-and-release state record for kokanee salmon twice in three weeks. For those unfamiliar with kokanee, it is the freshwater form of the well-known sockeye salmon of the northern Pacific. Sockeye, the salmon you find at the grocery store, are anadromous. They run out of the ocean and into rivers to spawn each fall. Kokanee also make a fall spawning run up creeks and rivers, but their lives are spent entirely in freshwater. It is thought the two species diverged thousands of years ago when

ice melt created a system of large freshwater lakes and rivers across northern North America. While the sockeye continued their anadromous lives, kokanee did not to return to the sea. In some regions the two species still interbreed, while in others kokanee have become entirely landlocked. Kokanee exist in lakes and rivers across the northern United States and Canada. They have even been transplanted into systems as far south as North Carolina. According to the Idaho State Journal, Cody Spencer and Rob Mackesey got onto a good bite as kokanee ran out of Palisades Reservoir and up Elk Creek to spawn in August. Palisades is a 16,000-acre impoundment of the Snake River that sits hard on the Wyoming border near Yellowstone National Park. Elk Creek feeds the northern end of the reservoir just upstream of the dam. Spencer and Mackesey told the Idaho State Journal they are relatively new to kokanee, but they were actually fishing for the record after they learned the existing catch-and-release record measured just 18.5 inches. For reference, the IGFA world record kokanee measured 27.75 inches and weighed 9 pounds, 10 ounces. Ronald Campbell caught the world record from Wallowa Lake, Ore. in 2010. On Aug. 19, both Spencer and Mackesey caught fish longer than the 2-year-old catch-and-release state record. Mackesey landed a 20.08-incher, and on the same day Spencer caught the 20.9-inch record setter. But the story doesn’t end there. On Sept. 8, Spencer went back and bested his buddy with a 21.5-inch male that was dressed in its full spawning regalia. Part of the allure of kokanee is their unusual appearance. For most of the year, they are silver-sided and resemble a rainbow trout. During the spawn, the bodies of the males turn bright red and they develop a hump on their backs. The catch-and-release state record is a relatively new program for Idaho that encourages the release of fish by allowing anglers to apply for the record by photographing their catch next to a measuring device. The official certified Idaho state record for kokanee is a 6.59-pounder that measured 24.5 inches. Jerry Verge caught it from northwest Idaho’s Priest Lake in 1975.

OAA Fisheries recently denied an Exempted Fishing Permit (EFP) that would have allowed pelagic longline (PLL) vessels into the East Florida Coast Pelagic Longline Closed Area. “Angler conservationists can breathe a sigh of relief that the longline EFP application is no longer a threat to the conservation gains in the E. Florida Closed Zone,” said Jeff Angers, president of the Center for Sportfishing Policy. “We will remain vigilant in protecting both this conservation zone we fought so hard for two decades ago as well as this amazing catch-and-release sailfish fishery that has grown off the east coast of Florida.”
On March 6, 2018, leading recreational fishing and boating organizations submitted public comment to the South Atlantic Fishery Management Council in opposition to the EFP. More than two decades ago, swordfish in the Western Atlantic were in serious trouble due to overfishing. The public responded forcefully to the plight of swordfish, and as a result, nursery areas were identified and closed to the United States PLL fleet in 2001. Today, anglers point to the recovery with pride as a significant conservation victory. “We greatly appreciate NOAA’s decision to keep the conservation zone off-limits to this destructive gear,” said Patrick Murray, president of Coastal Conservation Association. “Clearly the voices of recreational anglers and marine conservationists were heard. This is a great victory.” An unintended benefit of the East Florida Coast PLL Closed Area has been the establishment in the region of the nation’s best sailfish fishery. The direct economic benefit to coastal recreational fishing-related businesses and coastal economies has been remarkable. “Saltwater recreational fishing along the East Coast of Florida supports 35,523 jobs and has a sales impact of over $4 billion annually,” said Glenn Hughes, president of the American Sportfishing Association. “Much of this economic activity is attributed to the tremendous sailfish fishery that has been supported in large part by the East Florida Coast Pelagic Longline Closed Area. The recreational fishing industry is relieved by NOAA’s announcement to not put this conservation success at risk by allowing longlining back into the area.” Ever since the fishery was deemed recovered, there have been attempts to reopen the closed areas to commercial harvest and expose it to the types of intense commercial fishing pressure that drove it into an overfished condition. The permit denied by NOAA Fisheries would have authorized PLL vessels to make thousands of sets in the conservation zone for up to three years and sell all the legal fish caught.

In my experiences, artificial presentations are more effective on snook than on redfish. Lures such as Mirr-0-Dine, soft plastics, swim baits will get the job done. Pompano were here in September. I was catching them off of the bars in Charlotte Harbor and around Jug Creek Shoal just off of Bokeelia. They were most active on Silly Willy Jigs, as well as the small pompano rigs. I will be fishing for them this month at the same locations. On the Fly by Capt. Mike Manis n average, this is one of my favorite months. Snook and O redfish are entering favorable transition periods. Because, they’re separate and unique, sight-fishing opportunities are
possible on mangrove shorelines and on open grass flats. Snook begin moving away from open water shorelines towards backcountry creek systems. Last month, I began making my way further into the backcountry and I plan to push a bit farther this month. In Particular, on the east side below Punta Gorda, I’ll work the extensive collection of tidal creeks three or four islands deep. Later in the month, they should really be on the move. It’s hard to imagine now, but these creek systems will provide protection and more stable water temperatures when it cools off and the fronts start pushing through. In addition, it’s hard not to put some time in on the West Wall. It does see a lot of boat traffic, but it’s a natural migration path for fish making their way towards the Myakka River. When it’s good, it’s really good. Tidal creek areas around the Myakka Cutoff are also a good place to look. Redfish are coming off their August and September spawn and will still be grouped up on open flats. Any bay or sound could hold fish. In past years, flats with good flush from the Gulf were a good bet. For this reason, I have always liked the flats adjacent to Stump Pass in Lemon Bay and between
Captiva and Boca Grande Pass in northern Pine Island Sound. This close to Gulf passes; water clarity and sight fishing opportunities improved. This year, depending upon how long the red tide sticks around our beaches, we may have to spend more time looking inside the harbor. The Cape Haze Point area and around the bar outside Turtle Bay is worth a look. Further up the harbor, the flats outside Hog Island can fish well. Too, the bar system that runs from Mangrove Point to Alligator Creek is a possibility. As a final thought, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission has put a catch and release only rule in place from Anna Maria Island in Manatee County all the way down to Gordon Pass in Collier County for both snook and redfish. This is to help protect the species now that red tide has killed so many fish. It’s time that we all give a little back and practice preservation through stewardship. Until next month, good tides.

Fishing Adventures

ello fellow anglers! It has been a crazy summer, red tide H and green algae . Because of the natural occurrence, it makes it tough to give reports on fishing when the media is
broadcasting all types of negative news. Mostly the waters of Charlotte Harbor have not been affected up into the Cape Haze Point and most of the Matlacha area too. Typically, this time of year is slow for charter captains as the tourist season is typically Thanksgiving to Easter. Most people that live here and have boats go when they can and others think it is too hot to be out on a boat any way. I am investing in a thirty-foot fishing vessel so as to be able to travel quickly out to one hundred feet of water to fish. The plan is to reach these depths traveling about thirty-five knots with a comfortable ride and a head for the ladies that are willing to spend the day offshore. I have worked for charter companies fishing the deeper waters and personally for years and am excited to be able to offer trips for the deeper waters. I will be able to have six anglers for these trips and will offer six-hour half day trips and eight-hour full day trips. As we get the wrinkles out of things, we will be able to do custom extended trips. I have been receiving reports that they are catching nice red grouper thirty to thirty-six inches long, a few gulf mahi-mahis and seeing some sails. There has been some nice mangrove snapper caught out there, too. We will be able to setup and troll up to five lines for now. We have downriggers that can aid in catching king mackerel and grouper. We have upgraded the electronics to aide in finding new spots and getting a better view of our current go-to spots. I also am a scuba diver, so if I find a spot that has some unusual structure, I like to go down and take a look-see, and that is a great tool for putting fish on the deck. Out there the waters are the same color as the sky, blue, blue, blue, it is beautiful. Yea there are blackfin tuna, amber jacks, and wahoo that lurk in these waters too. The boat is a thirty-foot Scarab with twin Yamaha F250 four strokes. We will have all the required Coast Guard equipment before our first for hire trip. So, stay tuned to our addition to the fleet and schedule a S.W. Florida deep sea trip to create some memories with friends and family.

Atlantic Ocean so it is entirely surrounded by crystal clear, nutrient rich waters teeming with bait fish. The cold waters from the Gulf of Maine fill into Cape Cod Bay and sweep around Race Point to the north while the warm Gulf Stream races up from the south transporting large migratory predators, including bluefin tuna and great white sharks. What sets the striped bass apart from other fish species is it will fill in any saltwater environment from the shallowest estuary, all of the calm water bays that dot Cape Cod, and amass in huge schools from the canal to the outer beaches. Anyone with a fishing pole has the opportunity to catch a linesider (as they are called) from shore, bridge or boat and of course a kayak being the most versatile craft. These fish eat virtually anything in the water from clams, crabs and worms to live baits including mackerel, eels and chunk baits. My guys love to target these hard hitting, drag-ripping fish with artificials, including top water, paddle tails, and anything else that presents itself as a bait imitator. This year’s fishing reports where like most of the past fifteen years prior to arrival, smaller fish (Schoolies) had filled in all the estuaries and schools of large keeper size (twenty-eight inches and over) were being reported off Herring Cove beach in Provincetown. We camp in Eastham at the Atlantic Oaks Campground, so after a night of gear checks, knot tying, beer drinking, and fish stories we arose at 2:45 am and headed to the tip at Herring Cove. This particular day was warm, calm winds, and we were there just as the light began to creep up over the eastern horizon. We launched at day break, all six striper men, two rods apiece with a vast array of lures, using our collective knowledge from past trips as a guide to start. We fished our way out past the first mile without a single strike and continued out another half mile when the action started. Beautiful fish in the 25” range were tagging the paddle tails, all six of us were on at one point! We were drifting out with the tide while catching and releasing fish when the first “big” fish was hooked and then another! Pictures, hoots and howls pursued until we boated our limit of one keeper per person plus 80 additional fish collectively. Eventually the fishing slacked off and we knew that this was an epic year for our group! Another Day at the Office

t’s that time of the year when our water is flat calm and you can run 30 plus miles out to fish some public numbers for some cool deep-water species. In this article, we’ll discuss a few must-haves and some tips to have a successful day offshore. Bait and chum are going to be the main ingredients to a successful day offshore. You can fish about any public wreck, about 30 plus miles, and find a good quantity of fish. This time of the year I really like to take out a couple blocks of chum and shake them till I get the flow I want. I’ll put one block off of each side of the boat. Once I get the slick I want going, I start live bait chumming. Anything under 6 inches gets flicked off the back. Anywhere from 2-3 at a time, but be smart not to waste it all. For example, I went out with the owner of NautiKnots (an apparel company) and my best friend Capt. Mike 36 miles Sunday and we had a blast. When we got to the spot we weren’t the only boat there, but we found a nice patch of structure and made the most of it. Mike and I started working the chum bags till we had a nice slick going and started live chumming while they deep dropped. They both immediately got slammed by some lane snappers. As they were reeling up I saw streaks that indicated Amberjack to me. Immediately I tossed a bunch of bait out because I knew they would chase it to the surface and stay around if there was enough live bait out there. Well, low and behold, I was right and we had about a dozen at one time of 60 plus pound AJs. Mike and I started free-lining baits and immediately doubled up. I passed the rod off and hooked into another. Well here’s where things got crazy! The Goliath knew there were some hook-ups and decided to play, too. The AJ I had on got slammed and ripped the rod out of my hand (not my proudest moment) and the other rod got snapped in half when a Goliath blew up Ken. Mike and Ken still landed two studs, but I wasn’t happy so I dropped a chunk of Barracuda and let the owner of NautiKnots yank the menace up. It didn’t take long, we had him up but no rods in his mouth. All in all, a good day, got home just in time for NFL.

The Great Calusa Blueway

ne of the easiest and most O well maintained launches on the Calusa Blueway is

located at the Mound House on Estero Island. This small park, operated by the town of Fort Myers Beach, is home to the oldest structure on Estero Island. The house is actually young compared to the Calusa mound it was built on. Even if you don’t paddle, this site is well worth a visit to learn about the history of the island and Calusa. Launching is simple. Pull onto the driveway that loops around the property and unload onto the grass near the launch. Parking on site is limited, but there is annex parking a short walk down the road. The launch puts you directly onto Matanzas Pass. You can get to the Calusa Blueway Trail by paddling northwest into Hurricane Bay or head southeast towards Hell Peckney Bay. Wind is the deciding factor in which way I begin my paddle, but I usually enjoy accessing the trail in Hurricane Bay and then following the mangrove maze through to Hell Peckney. Because it is difficult for motorboats to get back here, there is a variety of undisturbed wildlife and a feeling of isolation. It can be very reassuring to see the Calusa Blueway markers. Even with the markers, it is easy to get turned around a bit in the mangroves. Take my word for it. A Mound House kayak tour will not only keep you on track, you’ll learn about the area’s fascinating ecology and history. They offer sunrise, sunset, moonlight, and day paddles. If you decide to go on your own, check the weather immediately before going out and give yourself some extra time to explore alternative routes in the mangroves. After take-out, the Mound House grounds are a great place for a picnic, explore the gardens, visit the historic home and inside a Calusa mound, fish from dock, and take advantage of their programs and clean facilities. Again, this is a great place to visit even if you do not plan on paddling. Offshore with Capt. Tom by Capt. Tom Bailas ctober is the month O where just about anything can happen in
the gulf. Offshore water temperatures will be slowly getting cooler and the bait fish will start migrating south. Along with the bait, comes a multitude of species following right behind them. Kingfish, blackfin tuna and cobia are my favorite fish to target in the fall. This year we will have to travel a little deeper than usual due to the red tide problem. Typically, I like to fish the beach area and out to around 50ft of water for pelagics, but this season I am anticipating the bait to be out a little deeper in cooler waters. The red tide in our area has been out to almost 45ft of waters depending on which way the wind is blowing that day. That being said, you have to find clean water to find the fish in these conditions. The bottom fish are always plentiful in October as well. The gag grouper will find their way into shallower waters. Every year we catch some really nice gags in about 30-50ft of water on some big ledges and structures. If you are after pelagics, then use live baits for the best results. You can sabiki up some cigar minnows, Spanish sardines or blue runners. You can either slow troll the baits or flat line, while you are anchored up bottom fishing. I would like to clarify to anyone who is wanting to fish and might be hesitant due to the red tide water conditions, once you get out past the rid tide the fishing is outstanding and there are no concerns of the safety of eating the fish. Try and keep using local businesses and help out those restaurants and businesses that are located on the water and nearby. There are many businesses that are struggling during this season for the of lack of tourists. We all must stick together to get through this crisis. Remember to always follow state and federal regulations. Be courteous of other boaters and keep only what you can eat.

ver the past couple weeks, I have noticed a form of O preservation that will take place no matter what man tries to fix. Mother Nature is an incredible thing, I have seen schools
of ladyfish in the harbor feeding on glass minnows. Also, mixed in has been some Spanish mackerel and tarpon. For the anglers that have fished these waters, we know that this is the norm for this time of year. I for one was worried that this year was going to be anything but normal. Due to the media coverage, I have been slower than I can remember in 10 years. Over the last couple weeks, I have had some of my regulars that still wanted to get out fishing. I am very happy to report that we had some very good fishing. So fellow anglers, I am going to give you a report from my last couple charters. I know the news has been beating our lovely fishery up. Over the past couple weeks, I have seen a major push of snook beginning to migrate north. The northern portion of the harbor has been on fire. For the most part these fish have been under 30”, but we have had some shots at very good fish also. The barrier islands with good current flow have had the best bite. We have also had a good bite in deeper water. Fishing around docks and other structure. Live bait has been doing the best for us. The trout bite on the flats has also picked up the past couple weeks. On a recent charter, we caught over 25 fish throwing
artificial. Most of the fish caught were 15-20”, however when we switched to live bait the bigger fish came out to play. Our biggest trout was a whooping 26.5”, which is a nice fish this time of year. Probably one of the biggest surprises is how the redfish bite has picked up. Yea, I know it’s the time of year that it’s supposed to happen. Well I’m not saying it’s as good as it should be, but I’m happy to report we’re catching some good reds. On a recent charter, we had multiple fish over 30” and our biggest was pushing three feet. Of the fish, these guys have taken the biggest beaten. So, seeing some of these big reds was a welcome surprise. Mother nature has a way of taking care of herself. We just need to be vigilant and do our part. If we don’t start preserving what we have who knows what can happen. I’m sure if your reading this, it’s because you share a passion for our fishery. We have to remember it starts with us

Local guides already have everything you’ll need and in most cases they’ll even have tags available if needed. Prices range from $400/night to $4000 for 2 Gators. Some guides have huge trophy fees and some like us have none. Cheaper hunts don’t mean it’s not worth it, expensive by Wayne Nichols hunts don’t necessarily mean it’s better either; get references. ight years ago, Jeff Kolodzinki spent 24 grueling hours on the dock of a Minnesota pond to break the Guinness World Record for Most Fish Caught in a Day. With a 10-foot pole simply rigged with a float, fluorocarbon line and a barbless hook holding live bait, he yanked 2,649 fish from the water in a single day. Dubbed the Marathon Man, Kolodzinki will attempt to break his own world record on Sept. 11-12, 2018 at Giant Goose Ranch in Canton, Ill. Kolodzinski already has his spot in the record books. This time he’s doing it to introduce people and families to fishing and to increase awareness and financial support for the Fishing For Life, a non-profit, tax exempt charitable organization whose Next GEN program finds mentors for children of families in need. A special focus within the program serves families of veterans who have lost loved ones while serving our nation. Not only is Kolodzinski the current world record holder for fish caught in a 24-hour period, but he also represented the United States seven times in international competition at the World Championship of Freshwater Fishing. He currently serves as the Fishing Brand Manager for Johnson Outdoors and is a longtime fishing industry professional with many awards.

on Palm Beach’s Wrecks

B
elow the ocean’s surface rest giants, the wooden and steel beauties that once demanded the sea’s attention. Lying there quietly, patiently suspended under the weight of water, what secrets do they hold? What lost memories are kept in their walls at the bottom of the sea? There is a calming silence as a diver approaches these giants. In the middle of a sandy desert, a diver approaches a dark shadow. As the current pushes them closer, the shadow grows and the shape of a bow or stern emerges. Then the sheer size of the sunken vessel towers overhead. It is dark and mysterious, yet full of life... and forgotten memories. Many wrecks off the coast of Palm Beach were sunk in the 1960s and now sport coats of sponges and coral growth, surrounded by underwater life. One in particular, the Mizpah, is a popular wreck to dive. Once a private Greek luxury liner, she was commissioned by the U.S. government for service in WWII, her rails outfitted with guns to patrol the coast for German U-Boats. After decommission, she sat in a storage yard for some time before being re-discovered. Her original family could not bear to see her wither on land, so they cleaned her up and gave her a burial at sea. I had the honor last August to dive with a granddaughter of the family who purchased the Mizpah and made an artificial reef out of her. My dive buddy showed me photos of the vessel in her prime and shared stories of childhood on the boat. It was an incredible experience to watch her eyes light up when she first saw the Mizpah underwater... how it had become a beautiful habitat. Seeing her excitement and, post-dive, her quiet reverence, made me realize there are secrets and lost memories in the walls of these sunken vessels and that these forgotten walls now have new purpose and life. Once at the bottom of the sea, these sunken giants attract life quicker than you might expect. In Palm Beach, from mid-August through October, wrecks are surrounded by Goliath groupers. Their favorite places to aggregate for spawning is around wrecks.

Dive operators have created The Palm Beach County Diving Association (PBCDA) to give divers and dive operators a bigger voice in local ocean-related issues, and to aid in the sinking of other ships as part of an active artificial reef program. On Oct. 6, the PBCDA is hosting its annual Artificial Reef Fundraiser at the Loggerhead Marinelife Center in Juno Beach. All proceeds go to the creation of artificial reefs in Palm Beach County. hen people ask what my favorite fish is to catch, they expect me to say billfish, bonefish, tarpon, striped bass, redfish or another popular species. They are often surprised by my answer. I tell them that the ultimate challenge to me lies in catching a free-swimming fish that I can see. It doesn’t matter whether I am using live bait, dead bait or artificials. And, I don’t care if I am trolling, drifting, anchored or standing on shore. The task centers on hooking and landing a fish on or near the surface that I can see. I have never had much interest in any type of tournament or contest. If I find a fish swimming at or near the surface, it lights my competitive fires. Since the fish is on the move, it won’t be in casting range very long. I may only get one shot or possibly two. It’s a disappointment when my casts are on target but the fish I am trying to catch has lockjaw or I just can’t find the trigger mechanism to make it strike. Those of us who have fished a long time have learned that fishing is a game of minor variations. The difference between a blitz and a bust may be extremely simple. One minor change in tackle or technique can turn defeat into victory. You might have to use lighter line, a shorter leader, or modify the speed of retrieve if you are using artificials. Perhaps it is a momentary pause shortly after you start the retrieve. Try vibrating your wrist on the rod hand to make the lure flash underwater. Above all, it’s vital to be observant.
And that also means checking other boats and anglers to see what they are doing. There is no better time to study fish behavior than when you can see your quarry and can watch its reactions to your attempt to elicit a strike. If you analyze what you have witnessed, it will help you use the knowledge to catch fish when they are not visible. You also need to understand that maintaining the cutting edge as you would when you see your quarry is not easy. When action is slow, it takes determination to fish with the same excitement as you do when your target is right in front of you. When you are presenting a bait or lure to a fish on the surface, your offering must look like it is trying to escape from the predator. If the fish thinks its prey is charging it, you can bet your quarry will spook. Let me stress again that it must look to the predator (and not to you) that its prey is trying to escape. And, if you are presenting an offering to a school of fish, you want it to move in the same basic direction as the school rather than toward it. Everybody has good days and bad days on the water, but to achieve success on the tough days, you have to work even harder. Newcomers to fishing often believe that the experts harbor secret lures and techniques that are closely guarded. The truth is that they work harder at catching fish than most people, and they keep changing their approach until they are successful. Try it!

hile the fall season for gag grouper opened June 1 for most Florida state and federal waters of the Gulf. The Gulf of Mexico gag grouper recreational season in state waters off Franklin, Wakulla, Jefferson and Taylor counties did not open until Sept. 1. Gag grouper season will remain open for all state and federal waters of the gulf through Dec. 31. The minimum size limit for gag grouper is 24 inches total length, and the daily bag limit is two fish per harvester within the four-fish grouper aggregate bag limit. ampa Bay Estuary Program (TBEP) was recently awarded $1.5 million to support projects with local government partners that will restore coastal habitats, improve stormwater quality and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The money comes by way of the Gulf Coast Ecosystem Restoration Council, which administers a trust fund created with penalties from the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. These funds will be used to implement five coastal restoration and climate resilience projects within the TBEP’s watershed boundary: • Tidal recirculation and seagrass recovery at Ft. DeSoto Park (Pinellas County) • Restoration expansion at Robinson Preserve (Manatee County) • Invasive plant removal at Cockroach Bay Nature Preserve (Hillsborough County) • Stormwater improvements at Copeland Park (City of Tampa) • Biosolids-to-energy facility development (City of St. Petersburg) Local benefits include habitat restoration for approximately 650 acres of coastal wetlands, 14 acres of coastal uplands, and 2 acres of freshwater wetlands – improving their capacity to support native wildlife and provide ecosystem services such as flood mitigation and pollution reduction in the Tampa Bay estuary.

and-based shark fishing (LBSF) has been enjoyed by anglers along the coastlines of Florida for many decades with limited spotlight, public concern, or ecological evaluation. While events such as deceased large hammerhead and tiger sharks appearing on several beaches in 2017 catalyzed a deeper examination of this type of fishing, greater exposure due to social media and a growing popularity of LBSF has also driven the need for a review by the Florida Wildlife Commission (FWC). This summer the FWC established 10 workshops around the state during the months of July and August for discussion and feedback on ideas for proposed policy and guideline implementation for LBSF. These forums were open to the public. I attended the FWC Workshop in Melbourne, Fla. on Aug. 27. I was not surprised that there was a full room, mostly of concerned citizens, including several local mayors as well as a few activists. Notably, the concern was mostly about public safety regarding this type of fishing from citizens, while activists pushed shark welfare. Anglers comprised a vocal 20 or so percent of the room. As Bob Dylan sang, “the times, they are a-changing.” As anglers, we are faced with issues and dilemmas our previous generations did not have. Global fisheries are under attack, while coastal fisheries are under increasing regulation. In Florida, coastal fisheries have shown tremendous progress with recovery of shark populations, as noted by the FWC in the meeting. The fear at hand by anglers is penalizing the LBSF community. These anglers, who pride themselves on a catch and release mentality, range from recreational fishermen to professional land-based charter guides. For some, this type of fishing provides a means for a way of life, while for others it’s a challenging sport unlike any other. A strong debate is embracing the positive, such as using LBSF as an opportunity for data collection and scientific research. For example, NOAA provides free tagging kits for any angler interested in tagging sharks prior to release as well as reporting tags on caught sharks. During the workshop, the FWC presented a number of topics for discussion and feedback, all of which can be found on their website in a downloadable presentation. The highlights included: 1. Special Permits for LBSF – There was overwhelming support of this by all parties (this would include education requirement with limited to no cost for the permit). 2. Restricting time/locations for LBSF – nighttime hours only and/or restrictions from certain public beaches. 3. Expanded Rules for Prohibited Species – prohibiting shorebased tournaments for certain species, restrictions on handling (keep in water), and use of specific gear to maximize survival of released sharks. While the above are merely preliminary recommendations and an outright ban on land-based shark fishing does not appear to be imminent, further data-driven research would lead to true long-term solutions for protecting sharks, supporting anglers, and informing the general public with policies that work for everyone. We shall await the decisions of the commission in December.

oling mangrove edges and flats in search of tailing and belly crawling reds is as much hunting as it is fishing. When the target is sighted and it’s time to take a shot with an 8-weight fly rod, your aim better be on target. Gillz pro staffer Noah Miller, of Melbourne, Fla., has spent the on-the-water hours it takes to consistently take reds on the fly. The Indian River, Banana River and Mosquito Lagoon might be facing water quality challenges, but the fishing remains good. Right now, during the fall mullet run and lasting into February is prime time on Florida’s east coast.
“There’s lots of forage, and the fish are happy,” Miller said of current conditions. “They’re very opportunistic this time of year and will eat almost any fly, as long as it is presented correctly.” The redfish display a lot of schooling activity in preparation for a late fall spawn. These fish are resident to their respective waters and remain there through the seasons, even during the spawn. They can be encountered in large schools of 100 fish or more, and finding them is the key to catching them. “Put in the time on the pushpole,” Miller coached. “These fish do move, but they might only be 200 yards away from where they were yesterday. If things look right and you think there should be fish around, don’t leave an area until you’re certain they’re not there.” If the fish are not visible, it is tough to catch them on a fly. With conventional gear, an angler can make long searching casts to cover water for fish that are not showing themselves. With a fly rod, you’re better off holding the fly on the deck until you spot a fish. Seeing the fish and which way it is headed allows for presentation of the fly. You want it to plop down in front of the fish and close, but not too close. “About 40 feet is the cast I like to make,” said Miller. “You’ll be able to tell if he’s seen it and is interested right away… as soon as the fly hits the water. Then you want to start stripping it away from the fish to make it look like a fleeing crab, shrimp or whatever fly you’re fishing.” Miller caught the redfish on the cover of this month’s editions of Coastal Angler Magazine in stained water with a Seaducer pattern that had purple and black hackle feathers for a tail, a black EP Fiber head and bead chain eyes. That fly worked for the 26-incher on the cover, but this time of year presentation is much more important than fly selection. ontauk, NY. It’s known locally as “The End,” and it’s marketed as “The Fishing Capital of the World!” It can back up both claims. “This is an awesome place for fly- and light-tackle fall thrills says charter skipper Paul Dixon of To the Point Charters (516-314-1185; www.flyfishingmontauk.com). “During October, the inshore action with speedy false albacore, stripers and monster bluefish absolutely sizzles.” Dixon has been fishing Montauk waters for 25 years, loading customers aboard his Contender Tournament 25 and working anywhere from the shadow of Montauk’s iconic lighthouse at the tip of the South Fork to Orient Point at the eastern terminus of Long Island’s North Fork. In the winter months, he charters out of Key Largo to fish the Everglades and Florida Keys. “It’s in the rips and coves at Montauk that the fall mayhem really

comes together,” said Dixon, who loves targeting albies with fly rod in hand. Through September, you’ll find pods of Fat Alberts scattered across Long Island’s East End, but once the rainbait exits the bays, Montauk explodes with fish.” According to Dixon, at the height of the run so many bay anchovies stack up in the rips surrounding Montauk Point that the water actually appears brown with the immense schools. “At that point,” said the skipper, “the albies feed in two ways. They’ll cruise through the densest baitfish schools in tight packs, turning on their sides with their mouths open and simply strain anchovies as they move along. They are tough to hook under those conditions since they aren’t singling out specific targets. Wait a little while though, and they’ll begin to bust up the baitfish schools. That’s when the fishing absolutely breaks loose and every cast has the potential to connect.” While light-tackle fans can hook-up using small tins like a Deadly Dick or a white 1-oz. Panther Martin Big Fin swimbait, Dixon prefers the long wand when sea conditions allow. “These fish hit hard and run fast, so go with the best fly fishing gear you can afford,” he suggested. “I use Cortland Compact floating/intermediate lines, Rise fly rods and Tibor reels. For patterns, 2- to 3-inch Epoxy Minnows get the job done most of the time.” Dixon pointed out that it’s important to know exactly what you are casting for each time you let your line fly. “The albies will be slicing right through the baitfish schools, and it’s important to lead them by several feet,” he said. “The bass, meanwhile, stick close together and plow through the schools like they are mowing a lawn. For these, bring your fly right across the front of the pack. Either way, stay in the bait with each cast. O
ne of the best parts of summer ending is the beginning of fall fishing and FROGS! I love to fish topwater frogs over grass, and this time of year is prime time. I live about 45 minutes from Lake Guntersville in Alabama, and there’s no place better, or more famous, for frog fishing than Guntersville. In the parking lot this time of year, there’s no telling how many different states you will see license plates from. I’ve fished all over this country and Guntersville definitely doesn’t have a monopoly on the frog bite. It has more matted grass than other TVA lakes, but fisheries up north have loads of grass too. And the bass up north seem to be more eager to bite. I think it’s because they aren’t targeted as heavily as they are down here. If I had the opportunity to take someone out and try to get them fired up about bass fishing, I think fishing a frog over matted vegetation would be my choice. If that person’s heart rate didn’t spike when a big bass blew up through the mat on their frog, then they would be better off doing something else. And then once they’ve seen a blow-up, the excitement level for the next one is all the higher. I get a huge smile on my face every time I see it happen no matter how many thousands of times it has happened. Just watching a fish blow up on a frog is exciting, but you also need to get him in the boat for that all-important photo op or weigh-in stage. For that you must have the right

gear. If you throw a hollow frog like the one in this photo over matted grass and he bites, you probably won’t get him in using monofilament line and a rod and reel from the department store.
