CAST is the world’s largest fishing trade show. Each year one of the highlights of the show is the New Product Showcase, in which companies roll out their newest and best. Coastal Angler and The Angler were there at Orlando’s Orange County Convention Center in July, sifting through all the offerings of the ICAST New Product Showcase. At the Orlando ICAST in July, Garmin blew the lid off the electronics industry with the introduction of its new Panoptix LiveScope. At the world’s largest sportfishing trade show, the most anticipated event each year is the New Product Showcase, in which companies present their latest and greatest in hopes of being named Best of Category. Awards are decided by a vote of media in attendance, and the Panoptix Livescope was not only awarded “Best Electonics,” it was named “Best of Show” out of 974 new products introduced in 2018. “To not only win the ICAST Best Electronics award, but the Best of Show award, too—it’s an honor we’re incredibly proud of,” said Dan Bartel, Garmin vice president of global consumer sales. “Panoptix LiveScope delivers the best of both scanning and live sonar technologies, and there’s nothing out there even close to it. These awards solidify our commitment to giving anglers and mariners the most innovative technology on the water, and they further strengthen our desire to be the top marine electronics brand in the world.” Panoptix LiveScope is a live-scanning sonar that gives anglers higher resolution and easier-to-interpret images of structure, bait and fish swimming below and around the boat than ever before. Garmin’s revolutionary Panoptix all-seeing sonar technology was the first to deliver live sonar images in real-time—forwards, backwards, sideways and below the boat—even while stationary. Now, thanks to the active scanning capabilities of Panoptix LiveScope, anglers can see images and movement so clear and precise that it’s even possible to distinguish between species of fish. “Panoptix changed the electronics game a couple of years ago,” said Jason Christie, Bassmaster Elite Series and Garmin pro. “Now, LiveScope is even taking it to the next level. The cool thing about it is the simplicity of it. What you see is what is there. The only picture that could be better is if you dive into the water with goggles, and I’m not sure that’s really even better.” Like other Garmin Panoptix transducers, LiveScope features two modes in one transducer—LiveScope Down and LiveScope Forward— and can be installed on a trolling motor or the transom. Depending on

the angler’s fishing preferences and techniques, LiveScope can easily be adjusted to change views. Point the LiveScope transducer down to see directly below the boat or forward to see around the boat. The Panoptix LiveScope system includes a compact GLS 10 sonar black box with an LVS32 transducer and a simple plug-and-play Garmin Marine Network connector for easy installation and integration with a compatible Garmin chartplotter. he Bahamas National Trust is the only non-governmental organization in the world mandated to manage a country’s entire national park system, which includes 32 national parks that protect over 2.2 million acres of Bahamian biodiversity. The Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park was the first National Park in The Bahamas and was the first to be designated as a “No Take” marine reserve in the wider Caribbean in 1986. Protected by The Bahamas National Trust since 1959, the Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park provides a look back at how coral reefs once were and a glimmer of hope for the future. Seen from the surface, the waters of the Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park are enchanting, with more shades of blue than Crayola offers. The real magic, however, is under the water where vibrant reefs teem with life. This is the result of almost 60 years of protection as a marine park.

In 1986, the Bahamas National Trust took the bold step of making the park a no-take marine reserve. The success of the Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park for protecting populations of key species and preserving the health of coral reef ecosystems is a testament to the foresight of its founders, who recommended protecting an entire landscape. This includes islands, nearshore habitats, like mangroves and seagrass beds that serve as nursery areas for many species, inshore and offshore reefs, and deep-sea areas. In doing so, they recognized how all of these areas are connected and how effective conservation includes protecting intact ecosystems rather than small pieces. In the 1980s the idea of ecosystem protection was advanced further by making the park a refuge for marine life where any removal of marine life or other resources was prohibited. Active management of users by The Bahamas National Park, including patrols of the park and installation of moorings for visitors to prevent damage from anchoring in sensitive areas has further promoted conservation of the park, resulting in the healthy reefs and marine life that we see today. The Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park is not without its threats, however, illegal poaching remains an issue in some parts of the park. As the wonders of the park attract more visitors, balancing ecosystem protection with visitor use is also a challenge. The case of the Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park highlights the ability of a large and well-managed marine park to not just preserve the beauty of an area, but also provide critical protection to marine life to maintain the delicate balance and health of coral reefs and other marine ecosystems. ahis, with their dazzling colors, are one of the most beautiful and tasty fish in the sea. They are pelagic and roam the open ocean, spawning year-round in the warm ocean currents. They reach sexual maturity quickly and spawn two to three times per year, releasing up to a million eggs. The good news is they are a fast-growing and abundant species, which makes them an ideal target for conservation-minded hunters. More good news—they are a perfect “starter fish” for anglers who want to give spearfishing a try. Most hook-and-line anglers are already experts at finding them, often looking for seaweed or floating debris. Whether you want to jump in because they are not biting, or you simply want to try something new, bluewater diving can be an exhilarating experience. When jumping on a weedline, you are treated to a beautiful sight of crystal blue water, bright orange Sargasso weed, and cute little jacks and sea creatures who will come by to check you out. It’s even more spectacular when you see the brightly colored mahi show up. They swim at the surface, so you don’t have to be an expert freediver to hunt them. They are not overly wary, if you don’t spook them. I always tell people, “pretend you are a log, and let them come to you.” Here are some tips for landing a mahi: 1. Use the right equipment. Even though you are at the surface, deeper water requires bluewater equipment with surface floatation (in case you spear a big one and it decides to go down). The float will do the work for you. Your local dive shop should be happy to advise you on the right set-up. 2. Use flashers and chum to increase your chances of attract-

ing them. Dive shops carry readymade flashers that hang from a float, or you can make your own (instructions online). 3. Move in a slow and relaxed way. Mahi are fast swimmers, reaching up to 55 mph, so if you do scare them, you will not catch them. 4. Extend your speargun slowly and take careful aim. If they are close and not moving fast, aim for the head (killshot). If they are far, aim for center mass. 5. As most anglers know, once on a line, mahis are fast, flashy and acrobatic. When speared, they sometimes make figure-eight moves, rather than swimming straight away from you like most other fish. Do not let them circle or make loops around you – just swim away from them and keep tension on the line. 6. Once a mahi is tired and ready to be subdued, hold it by the gills. 7. Once you’ve mastered spearing mahis with a speargun, you can try using a polespear for an added challenge. his is a good question. An answer, however, is not a simple matter, as there are some specific characteristics to be considered. Baitfish If you are using a fly that imitates the movements of a baitfish, it is recommended that where and when possible, you observe the behavior patterns of actual baitfish. How fast are they swimming? Are they swimming in schools or small groups when being chased by game fish? Are they stunned by game fish before being eaten as they are sinking, or in fishing lingo, “on the fall?” Most injured baitfish swim in a frenzied motion, so quick and short strips is the best retrieval method. In conditions where the baitfish are lazily swimming about, try a slower, longer strip to get your adversary’s attention. Keep in mind that baitfish always swim into the current. When fishing from a drifting boat, cast your fly up-current, let it sink and drift in the current until the fly swings at the boat’s stern into its wake. At the end of the drift, allow the fly to gyrate, lifelike, in the current for a few seconds before beginning stripping. This technique often results in a strike, so hang on! Crab or Shrimp If your intent upon attempting to imitate a crab or shrimp, make short, small strips giving the fly the look of a scurrying crab or shrimp. This move usually gets a fish’s attention. Upon spotting the game fish eyeing the fly and beginning his approach, stop the fly, allowing it to sit mo-

tionless. Then move it again in short spurts. This move often results in a hookup. Fish that follow the fly but don’t eat it? A very frustrating incident when saltwater fly fishing is when a fish follows the fly but refuses to strike. Many saltwater gamefish, slashing and contorting, will closely tail a fly right to the rod’s tip without taking the fly. It’s a very frustrating experience that often leads to the angler scratching his head and feeling totally hopeless. There is, however, an easy way to get a picky fish to take the fly. I call it “sweeping the fly.” When a fish has followed the fly to within a few feet of your rod tip (usually you’ll have 5 to 10 feet of line outside the rod tip), lower your rod tip and make a sweeping motion as if you were going to make a side-armed back cast. Don’t pull the fly out of the water, but keep it moving. On the sweep, the fly will move smoothly through the water, doing a great impersonation of a fidgety baitfish attempting to escape a predator. This move enjoys a high percentage of success. The trick is to exercise control over your emotions and not pull the fly from the fish’s mouth when it strikes. The hook set is always very close to you, so be prepared to allow the fish to run. That means being able to manage the fly line as it shoots through the guides.

north as Bull Bay, Turtle Bay, and the bar protecting Cape Haze in Charlotte Harbor. These ‘brutes’ are on the move and will be around these areas. Many guides prefer to fish on a low tide in effort to see them ‘tailing’. My preference is to fish for them on a high, incoming tide around mangroves, oyster bars by Capt. Terry Fisher and sand bars. I am a proponent of light tackle that will provide a challenge when ‘fighting’ and ‘landing’ these August fishing proved to be rather tough due to the red game fish. When fishing for spawning redfish however, tide and algae blooms, which much of the world is aware I recommend using 4000 series reels loaded with 10of. This was applicable to inshore and offshore fishing 15lb line (drags set tight) mounted on ‘Medium’ to alike. Most of my ‘Gulf Coast’ experience is attributed ‘Medium Heavy’ (10-20lb) line test rods, as these fish to inshore and there I will focus attention. The toughest are big and powerful. The baits are your choice on 1/0 challenges for August were not only locating fish, but to 3/0 circle or ‘J’ hooks. Cut pinfish, ladyfish, or white baits all work, but I prefer big shrimps on the bottom or under a popping cork against the mangroves. I recommend the same equipment for big snook, but the equipment for most other inshore species may be down-sized to 2500-3000 series reels with 10lb. test line, mounted on 8/17lb. line test rods. The length of rod will determine the distance of the cast. The shorter the rod, the shorter the cast! Seatrout, pompano and mangrove snapper are around and fun to catch on light tackle. I basically use small shrimp or pilchards for these fish. In my opinion, shrimp is the most effective bait for these species. Place one on small circle or ‘J’ hook under a popping cork, with or without a weight. Fish the grass flats of Pine Island Sound and Matlacha Pass in about 4-6 foot of water over turtle grass for best also finding locations not affected by red tide. These same estuaries were the least affected by the red tide and algae blooms of August allowing the harvest of fish to be decent all summer long, but should be even better this month. Depending on the type of charter request, my target species will be redfish, as they are beginning their yearly ‘inshore’ migration to eat and spawn. If history repeats itself, they will be here in big numbers and big sizes. My advice is to ignore any negative press and all naysayers as September may be one’s best opportunity for a ‘fish of a lifetime’. ith all of the gloom and doom out there in the media, I am here to tell you the truth, red tide has not been in the Intracoastal or upper harbor areas at all this year and the fishing is quite good. If you are the lucky one who gets on one of the schools of monster black drum or one of the schools of tarpon. Capt. Karl went 9 for 13 in other words landed 9 out of 13 hook ups on tarpon. Schools of Spanish mackerel and lady fish are in the area and the red fish on the north end of the West Wall and Myakka Cut off are in good numbers, and reds by the skating rink are mostly over size. There are plenty of snook but the larger ones are way up the Peace or Myakka Rivers. With a

lot of smaller ones on the flats. Red tide comes and it goes as it always has and I have had several reports of bait fish along the beaches. Schools of pompano are going through Boca Pass and have been running the sand bars on the West side of the Harbor and from Pirate Harbor to two Pines just outside the bars. There is a lot of fish being caught and if you can get on them jacks in the 5-pound range off Turtle Bay and up towards the mouth of the Myakka river will test your rod and the drag on your reel. This will be a fairly normal September for fishing. When fishing for snook, it will be tougher in a boat as snook like the piers and dams and more live in the canals and under bridges than anywhere else. A great way to catch snook is to take a shrimp for a walk and I like to use a med-heavy 7’ spinning rod with a 4000-size reel, 30-pound braided line with 40-pound floro leader and a boxing glove jig head at least 3/8 once, and I like pink. Hey it’s pretty and I catch a lot of snook with pink! Place the point of the hook on the underside of the shrimps mouth when you are ready and it should look like the shrimp is following the Jig Head. Let the shrimp jig go to the bottom right off the side of the pier and then very slowly and quietly walk out the pier. Trying to keep the shrimp 1 foot off the bottom and hang on. When you get hit, the whole fight is right there at your feet. If the snook goes 5 feet to the left or right it will wrap around the pilling and break off, so tight drag. September Night Fishing ello fellow anglers, For those that have learned how to handle the heat this time of year you may want to do some night fishing. August and September are the best months for night fishing in our area. Plan your trip to leave while the sun is still up, but after the afternoon t-storms. The mangrove, lane, and yellow tail snapper should be ready for some action. There are several different ways to chum. In the Keys, they use the sand balls to chum. They use sand you could buy at Lowes or Home Depot and some frozen chum from your bait shop and some type of oil menhaden or vegetable will do. You may use oat meal or elbow macaroni noodles to use as a bulk filler. I have been on the boat with guys that had them frozen and deployed them, it seemed to work well. Or you may thaw the ground up chum and have your stuff in buckets to make your fish stew chum. Mixing the ingredients to the consistency of bread dough so it stays together till it lands on the bottom and explodes and the crowd goes wild. As you land a few of these chum bombs, the fish will stack up and you are building life under your boat. As the activity on your depth/ fish finder expands, you can start to use some of your frozen bait for catching snapper and whatever you have drawn to your party. Frozen bait I mean is squid, Spanish sardines, and some other types of frozen small fish. And you should have shrimpeverybody likes shrimp. If you have chosen a natural bottom spot, you should have no problems with the goliath grouper. If it is big enough to hold goliath, you may choose to not fish that spot. You may find red or gag grouper at night, too. Mostly it will be the snapper you will be targeting for your pleasure. Depending on how far from the beach you travel determines what rules you play by. Inside 9 miles you have state regulations, beyond that is federal waters. Do your research before you travel out to harvest some good table fare.

It’s All About The Kids

ur team woke up at five in the morning to catch bait fish at the Skyway Bridge for a day of fishing with Ashley, an amazing young lady who is a 22-year-old young woman diagnosed with autism and has had many struggles in life, just trying to “fit in” with her peers. Ashley is very outgoing, loves people, and even though she has a disability, she never lets it hold her back from doing the things she loves, like fishing, and that is what today is all about - her. We arrived at the Skyway Bridge just as the sun was peaking up, threw a few times, got our bait, and headed back to the boat ramp to pick up our fisherman Ashley. Off to our first spot, and as were driving there, all her and I were talking about is keeping the fish she catches. She doesn’t care what kind of fish they are, she’s just so excited to have the opportunity be able to catch them. We stopped, threw

some bait, and started chumming and within a minute we saw trout busting on the surface along with the strangest thing ever - catfish were hitting our live bait on the surface right next to the trout! Ashley was so excited as she reeled the first one in, caught some keeper trout for dinner and some lady fish and catfish. Ashley said that the lady fish and catfish put up a great fight! On to our next spot, we chum a little bit. We quickly grab Ashley a bait, hooked the bait, and cast just up current of the fish to land in front of the fish. We let the bait drift back and wait for the strike. Bam she hooked up, and Ashley caught her very first snook! This day was all about Ashley as we watched her excitement catching these fish. I actually learned so much from her – too. She didn’t care what kind of fish she was reeling in. Fishing doesn’t mean you have to catch the best fish or even the biggest fish. You don’t have to set a record. It’s all about taking time with someone special to catch a simple fish. Fishing is not about catching fish, but, rather it’s about the experience. Just ask Ashley, her favorite fight was with a catfish and a ladyfish, but, the smile on her face while we cruised back in said it all! Thanks for reading my story. Active Duty, Veterans, and First Responders. My role is tiny compared to the tremendous mission to help these American Hero’s in their quest to find some balance and healing in their lives. Typically, I show up at the chosen venue where I find this entire group of guys and gals gathered around a trailer pulling kayaks, gear and all the supplies to make a base camp at the water’s edge. While the canopy, tables and chairs are being set up, there is light banter between the volunteers, people are arriving and introducing themselves, talk about their deployments or the prospect of catching fish for the day fills the air. To the casual observer, it’s hard to tell if any one person is in charge, as all the volunteers know their roll. Soon enough participants are trying on life jackets, being shown a kayak they’ll use for the morning and making sure they have everything for a successful day on the water. There is a tremendous amount of support for this group as you begin to realize that even more people have arrived, not to fish or participate, but just to show their support and be with their brothers and sisters! When all the paperwork and preparations are made Tim, the driving force behind this group, introduces everyone and talks about the mission and the goals of Heroes On The Water, any upcoming or ongoing fundraisers, like the gear this group sells to help support the members. After a brief safety message, the volunteers launch everyone and the day begins. A real sense of purpose engulfs the group as you see small groups paddle in different directions, some solitary anglers making their own way, while others are being led by the group’s “fish whisperers”! After a morning of paddlin and fishin, solace and camaraderie, we all begin to work our way back to shore where another group of volunteers have prepared lunch, cold drinks and a place to hide from the sun. Stories about fishing and life begin to emerge around the group, including a little trash talking and bragging about the biggest or baddest fish! There is an unspoken sense of purpose that can’t be measured, but you can feel, as the groups participants begin to say goodbye and head back to their busy lives knowing that today at least was peaceful, rejuvenating, and satisfying. Another Day at the Office

ea, I wouldn’t believe it either if we didn’t actually catch one! Sailfish is one of most sought-after fish in the world and for many reasons. If you ever fought a sailfish you know they dance on the water like no other fish I’ve ever seen. I have some experience with sailfish because I target them in my big boat on the East Coast of Florida for a couple months out of the year. One day last month I was doing Goliath Grouper research with some clients before my man Tom Fish showed up to the wreck in the morning. Tom Fish has caught sailfish all around the world and almost landed 25 sails in a single day on a fishing trip a couple months ago. When he got to the wreck I told him to anchor up next to me because I was on the wreck. I was chumming like crazy, as always when all of sudden a sail popped up. We started chumming extremely hard and had live baits going off both boats when all of sudden Tom’s rod goes off and the sailfish danced behind the boat for what seemed like entirely too long. Tom was quick to act and hooked the fish. After a couple of minutes watching him, we decided to work this as a team because of the rarity of this fish in our area. I hoped on his boat and the team work began. We swapped the rod between us for about 15 minutes while the fish keep dancing. I’ve caught my fair share of sails, but I’ve never seen one dance this much. This was a solid fish, over 5 feet and she let us know by the fight she was giving us. We fought the fish in silence in the middle of Florida summer heat. Sweat pouring off all of us, knowing we had a rare catch on for our area. I’ve honestly heard only of 4 people that have caught a sailfish over here, especially in 35 feet of water! When she was close enough, I reached in with all my might and got the fish. We all celebrated for a minute, grabbed a picture, and had her swimming on her way. One of the coolest experiences I’ve had fishing Southwest Florida. Wanna thank Tom Fish for trusting in me to get the job done and share that experience with them. Remember, we’re all on the water for the same reason; to have fun and make memories. The Great Calusa Blueway

ost paddlers and anglers I know, help clean up trash M whenever they are on the Calusa Blueway. A few times a year we join in events that allow us to work and paddle together.

On Sept. 15, many will be united for International Coastal Cleanup Day. This Ocean Conservancy event is coordinated locally by Keep Lee County Beautiful Inc. After participating in a few cleanups, we have all learned a few important tips. • Bring a canoe. Canoes don’t seem to be as popular down here as they are up north, but they are great for cleanups. In fact, this is the main reason we keep an old Coleman in the flotilla. You might find something large or an area that really needs attention and you collect several trash bags of debris that won’t fit in a kayak or on a SUP. It is much easier to throw all the bags and large objects in the canoe, compared with balancing them on your SUP or kayak. If you do not have a canoe, consider making friends with someone who does. • Think about ways to remove fishing line. After almost cutting myself and dropping my knife into the water while removing monofilament from the mangroves, I was motivated to find a safer tool. A small letter opener connected to a floating keychain works great. Keep Lee County Beautiful provided these for one of our prior cleanups and I still have mine. • Be cautious. Tools are not the only thing that can cut you. Be cautious of oysters when trying to remove monofilament wrapped around prop roots or floating debris stuck in the mangroves. The wind and tide can push you into them if you are not careful. If the current or wind is too strong, get the help of a more experienced paddler, or just come back when conditions are more favorable. With a little caution and a few friends, cleanups can be a fun and rewarding way to make the Calusa Blueway safer for wildlife and the people who enjoy being on the water. Paddlers can join an existing site or grab a group of friends and become a site coordinator at another location. Gulf to Bay Standup Paddle Boards is organizing a cleanup paddle for Picnic Island. Offshore with Capt. Tom by Capt. Tom Bailas TIGERS, GOLIATHS and SANDBARS …. OH MY!!! his particular morning my day started off with the usual routine of preparation for a full day charter. Our guests arrived at the dock and they were 4 young strong guys with the ability and desire to catch a BIG FISH. My first thought was going to be dropping large baits down and having them pull up a big goliath grouper and take a photo and release it. So, I stopped at a piece of structure to catch our bait. Within 10 minutes we had caught two barracuda that we could use for the goliath. I cut the belly strip of the barracuda for the bait and dropped it down about 40 ft. Within seconds the line went tight and the rod bent to its full capacity. We knew this was a HUGE fish. After an intense 10-minute battle, the 400 plus pound Goliath grouper was boat side. The guys were so excited and got some pictures and we safely vented the fish and released it back to the structure below. They wanted another big bite for the next guy, so I immediately sent another piece of barracuda belly down. The bait sat for almost 10-15 minutes until the rod went off and the line was dumping out fast. I knew then we had a shark. He fought the shark and got it to the boat to see a nice 8ft sandbar shark on the line. Now two of the guys were wore out and the other two guys were anxiously waiting for their turn to pull on a big fish. Well it didn’t take long, as we did the same thing and ended up with a monster fight on our hands. Our line was peeling off the 100-lb. tackle so fast that my mate had to dump the anchor so we could chase this fish. We caught up to the fish, gained about half the line back, and the tug-of-war game began. The battle lasted over 2 hours with all four guys taking turns on the rod. The shark finally came to the surface, so I could get a look at him and yelled “TIGER SHARK!!!” It kept going back down and I suggested that two guys get on the rod, one push up and apply maximum pressure and the other reel down. Thirty minutes later we got the enormous Tiger shark to the side of the boat. We took video and pictures with it in the water and I released the biggest Tiger shark I have ever seen. We estimated it to have been 14ft and upwards of 1000 lbs. or more. When handling sharks, you must be very careful removing the hook and respect the creature! Release them safely and hope they bite again one day! Remember to always follow state and federal regulations. Be courteous of other boaters and keep only what you can eat. Happy Fishing!! y fellow anglers, have we got us a mess here on the M Southwest Gulf Coast? We have been begging for media coverage. I was always told the squeaky wheel gets the grease.

Well, the outcry from us here on the coast has been heard. Over the past few months I have seen people come together to support our estuary. I was born and raised fishing Southwest Florida. The one thing that brings a tear to my eye, is the outcrying support of the people that were not born and raised here. I never thought that anybody would care more than a local! Over the last couple months, I have had to eat my words. To my fellow northern anglers that love this coast, please keep fighting with us. This year is an election year, it’s not about republican or democrat. This year it’s about the future of our estuary. It is about preserving what you grew up doing as a proud Florida native. Wanting to pass down the great times you had as an adolescent fishing the flats of our great estuary. It’s about the hours you spent working hard shoveling snow so you could work for that day you could retire. Retire to the greatest coast on Florida, to experience some of the greatest fishing in the world. It is time we made our voices heard loud and clear. We are tired of seeing our estuary get put on the back burner, we are no longer going to be silent. The impact of this year’s red tide will be felt for years to come. One of our major game fish has taken a hit that will be felt for years. People come from all over this great country for

the opportunity to catch a trophy Snook. This year we witnessed hundreds of female Snook killed from this disaster, females that were in their summer spawning habitat. The ripple effect from this could be felt for a very long time. This could top the freeze from 2010. The reasoning is the state will not step up to the plate and accept the loss. They want to keep hiding this dirty little secret under the rug. The past year or so we have seen organizations, such as Captains For Clean Water and Bull Sugar start leading in our fight for the future. If we don’t start standing up to the people that take our resources for granted, it will continue. My fellow anglers, I’m asking you to please do some research and make our voices heard. It’s time we get our coast back to a state of destination, not a state of disappointment.

Let’s Take it Outside by Misty Wells

t is time to get serious as Bow season approaches there are quite a few things you need to wrap up, so you are ready. Number one get all your hunting gear together, check and test everything to be sure it is all functional and replaced. Broadheads are something that I recommend that you replace, after taking shots they can become dull you need everything sharp for that kill shot. Take out all your gear and check it, make sure you are replacing lost items and used items. If your scent control is old get some new stuff they start to lost potency after time, replace your Thermacell fuel and pads your going to need it. A few things folks forget are an extra Release, Calls and Rattlers, Allen Wrench, String Wax, Range Finder and do not forget your Safety Harness. The best way to be sure you have it all together is a Test Run, pack your Bow, your Tree Climber or Stand, all your hunting gear and head out somewhere to get set up. Location is key, now I hope you have been able to go out preseason and locate some key places for Bow Hunting but not everyone can, so here

are a few tips to help. The Deer start to move when the sun is coming up so make sure your placement is right, estimate where the sun will rise and how it will affect your cover. Deer signs are important you need to hunt where there is deer, so start by looking for scrapes, rubs, scat and tracks leading to and from bedding areas. Food and Water can be a real asset to your hunt, using food plots is great but if you don’t have one look for natural food sources that the Deer will be feeding on. Water is essential to human and animal alike so if there is some type of water source close by that will be a real asset. Cover is key for the Hunter and Deer, you must be able to move, stand and draw your Bow to get a shot and if Doe’s feel safe in that area they will attract Bucks. Pay attention to the prevailing winds, you always want to be downwind from where you think the Deer will emerge. You can’t shoot what you can’t see so Visibility must be good, try and set up in an area where you can get the biggest field of range possible to increase your chances. No matter where you go to Bow Hunt this year, prepare, practice and use your safety equipment then Grip it and Rip it. Well it’s that time of year again! What’s not going on down here in SoFlo this time of year? Hunting season is underway, public alligator season is open, lobster season has recently opened again, and South Florida gets invaded by lobster hunters from all over the country. This season has been a little bit different though....since our state got beaten up by Hurricane Irma last year, the Florida Keys took a direct hit from devastating winds and rain, leaving virtually every commercial fisherman and guide without any income for months. The repairs are still going on and have a long way to go, evident by just driving down US 1 and still seeing houses and business with boarded windows and doors, tarps on roofs, and trash dumpsters in driveways. Good news/bad news. First, the bad...many small businesses and homeowners rely on lobster tourist season for valuable income and while most businesses are up and running again, many of the homeowners are still waiting on repairs and not able to rent out

their homes this season. Thus, making it difficult to find a place to stay at a reasonable rate. I’ve never seen so few boats and people in the Keys during lobster season. Good news...if you have a place to stay, it’s just about impossible to not get a limit of lobster daily, even now! Lobster are everywhere and plenty of them! Our crew and friends staying with us have enjoyed some easy pickings daily! If you decide to try your luck at diving or bully netting, you shouldn’t have any issues finding plenty on your own or by hiring a local guide. Capt. Derrick Jacobson of South Florida Light Tackle Charters Inc. has been teaming up with us for years and is by far one of the best all-around guides we have. He’s who we always rely on down in the Keys to put everyone on lobster day after day, year after year, and he never disappoints! Friendly and easy going, patient and knowledgeable...keys for success. Hunting. It never ends here in SoFlo. Hogs and Gators year-round on private lands. The majority of Florida is now open on private and public lands for hunting season. ach June my family and I take a break from our Venice, Fla. charter operation and head to the Florida Keys to do some fun-fishing. This year we fished from Tavernier and caught mahi, tuna and a big beautiful sailfish. We hosted some special guests on the boat this year. It was a family chosen by the Catch-A-Dream Foundation (catchadream. org). Gavin, who is 11, his little sister, mother and father came to fish with us for three days, accompanied by a Catch-A-Dream volunteer host named Adam. Catch-A-Dream Foundation provides children with life-threatening illnesses the opportunity to go on a hunting or fishing adventure of a lifetime with all expenses paid. Everyone had high hopes of Gavin catching his first mahi. As we cut through Tavernier Creek, I could see several thunder-

storms building offshore. We would have limited time to catch some fish and get back safely. I saw an opening in the sky and headed that way. We ran about 12 miles, and I started seeing bird action and three huge patches of weeds. My wife, Trisha, steered the boat as I put out the spread of lures and fresh ballyhoo. We immediately hooked a 12-pound bull mahi, and in short order Gavin had accomplished the first goal of the trip. But the day was not over. Things were getting ready to get very exciting. As we reeled in a small fish on our second pass, it started to rain. Out of nowhere Gavin yelled, “Look at the that BIG fish in the water!” It was a huge bull mahi, maybe 60 pounds. I grabbed a spinning rod and tossed a bait to it, but it just swam off. After seeing that fish, we had to try another pass. As I was letting it out a ballyhoo line, it came tight. The head of a big mahi pushed water toward the bait. Five seconds later, we had a huge fish on! Gavin grabbed the rod, and after a few jumps we had the cow mahi boat-side. I gaffed the fish, but it flew off and into the water. Everyone aboard went dead silent. Then my wife said, “Tom, it’s going to be OK,” before praying, “Oh please God let this fish come back to us.” It did! Gavin battled the jumping fish back to the boat. This time I got it over the rail. It measured 65 inches long. I have never seen anyone catch a cow mahi that long. There is not a doubt in my mind that God was in control and gave Gavin the strength to catch this fish of a lifetime! It was an experience of a lifetime for all of us. Gavin is a wonderful child, full of life despite his illness. Catch-A-Dream Foundation is an amazing organization that provides these deserving kids and their families a trip of a lifetime. Capt. n an early afternoon in mid-June, my wife and I had dropped our son at swim lessons in Jensen Beach when I realized how close we were to the causeway. Of course, I made her stop so I could fish. Conditions were perfect. In the middle of an outgoing tide, the water was a little milky and churned up. A small school of glass minnows showered the surface, and pelicans dove on finger mullet schooling through the span of the bridge. Prior to leaving the house, I had just tied up a 1-ounce white-and-blue flair hawk jig and was really anticipating putting it to use. If you’ve ever caught a snook on a flair hawk, you know the feeling when they thump the jig. That happened on my third cast, and as I set the hook the fish did not hesitate to run straight under the catwalk with about 20 yards of line. About to lose her on a piling, I cupped the spool hard and managed to turn her head. I got a few cranks on her and began a battle like I’ve never experienced. The pure power is absolutely amazing. After what seemed an eternity, I brought the fish to the top. I handed the rod to my wife so I could hop the railing to balance on a piling cap no wider than 8 inches. Careful not to fall in or injure the fish, I brought it over the railing for a few photos before release. It was the fish of a lifetime.

f you want to be a successful bass angler, you have to learn to fish a jig. I don’t know anybody, anywhere, who’s a successful bass angler, who doesn’t know how to fish a jig well. It is so versatile, and it catches quality fish. Personally, I love a good jig bite, so it’s also one of the most fun ways to fish. There’s not another lure on the market that has been tweaked and built to fish different types of cover and structure like a jig, and that’s part of its appeal. Jigs come in so many different shapes and sizes that the possibilities are endless. Changing out the jig’s trailer can make all the difference in the world, too. If you are just starting to get serious about jig fishing, an “Arkie”-style jig would be best to learn with. A 3/8- to ½-ounce size, really the first kind of bass jig head that ever came out, is where to begin. I use it for flipping, as it works well around wood, rock, gravel, ledges, and you can even swim it. You basically fish it like a soft plastic worm. Cast it out and let it go all the to the bottom on a slack line. Pull it off the bottom a few inches and then crawl it along. Most of the time when you’re casting or flipping, you’re imitating a crawfish, so think about a one of those walking around on the bottom. He’s not going to be jumping around a lot. If something chases him, he might scurry along quickly, but they usually move fairly slowly. Fishing a jig does take the right gear. I fish 20-lb. Vicious fluorocarbon with an improved clinch knot, a good high-speed reel and an NEPS 90HF rod from MHX. It is a 7’6” heavy-action rod with a fast tip. That rod is absolutely perfect for jig fishing. You can make accurate presentations with this fast-action tip, and the heavy power gives you the backbone to pull fish out of

the cover. There are tons of jigs with this style. The best ones always have a good Mustad hook. Keep the colors simple; green pumpkin and orange in clear water and black and blue in dirty water. Jigs are weedless and made to be fished in heavy cover. Give them a try, and you’ll soon see why everyone who bass fishes likes a jig.

ike most southern ports, Charleston, S.C. offers plenty of inshore angling opportunities. You’ll find redfish in the bays, seatrout in the channels, plus flounder, cobia and spadefish on local wrecks. “Those are all fun,” said Darcy Hill (#fishcharleston), but if you want to hook something with a real sense of Southern hospitality, the inshore sheepshead fishery is tough to beat. From Isle of Palms to Folly Island, and right on up into the confluence of the Ashley and Cooper rivers surrounding the city, you’ll find these battle-ready fish hugging structure.” An abundance of sheepshead doesn’t mean they’re pushovers. Quite the contrary, Hill pointed out, “Sheepshead can be challenging to catch. You have to poke into all the nooks and crannies amongst structure points, and keep moving until you get on them.” For bank fishermen, Hill recommended public access points like the Folly beach, Isle of Palms or Mount Pleasant piers. Boaters should tie-up to pilings, docks or other structure (where legal) and fish each piece thoroughly. Sometimes, she said, moving your bait just 5 or 6 inches to one side or the other makes a ton of difference. “We generally use fiddler crabs or oysters for bait,” explained the 32-year old Folly Island resident. Bury the hook in your offering and hide the point. To get the bite started, chum with crushed oysters or barnacles. Fiddlers work best from May through February while oysters rule in cooler months. Get your line tight to structure, then lift it up slightly and drop it down slowly. Most bites come on the drop. The end of the ebb and start of the flood usually see the best scores.” Setting up for sheepshead, Hill uses a Carolina-rig with a size 1 Owner Mosquito hook, a ¾-ounce egg sinker and a 1-foot length of 30-pound test mono leader. She’ll team this with a fast-tip rod and KaskKing 3,000 series Kodiak spinning reel filled with 40-pound test KastKing Super Power or KastPro braided line. “I like the abrasion resistance of these lines,” she noted, “and that Kodiak reel just gets the job done. Last week it out-muscled a 15-pound spadefish.” Keep in mind, Hill added, that sheepshead can be light biters, so watch for line twitches in addition to feeling for strikes. Set the hook hard because these fish have a big set of teeth and tough lips. Pull straight up, not to the side. Keep your rod high and walk the fish away from the nastiest tangles as you reel up. Charleston’s inshore sheepshead average 3 pounds but can push into double-digits. Two years ago, Hill took fellow KastKing pro staffer Christin Kruger on her first sheepshead foray. “She caught a 10-pounder!” laughed Hill. Now she’s a sheepshead fan for life.” October is prime time for Charleston’s sheepshead. he action peaked at the end of August here in northern Costa Rica, with multiple sailfish releases and daily shots at marlin battles. Frank Bellizio, Bob Sherley and Chet Jasak had the trip of a lifetime with sweet sailfish and mighty marlin releases. Once they got home we received this: “I returned last week from my trip to Nosara,” wrote Frank Bellizio, of Tampa, Fla. “It was great to finally get to go fish with your team in Costa Rica. I can’t tell you how much I enjoyed the trip and will recommend Fishing Nosara to everyone. “Bob has ALS and his mobility and strength are not the best. Both Capt. William and Capt. Francisco really accommodated us so that we were able to help our friend land both a sailfish and marlin. “Bob was a diver and commercial fisherman in his earlier years. Francisco wanted to, he could have ended our day earlier, but he hung in and we got the sailfish late in the day. Capt. William had to work the Wanderer over and over to keep the marlin in position so Bob and I could get it landed. These men and their crew (Johnny and Elias) are much more than just employees, they have heart, and you are blessed to have them on your staff.” Kathleen Clarke of Ottawa, Ontario came to us as a novice angler, but after her trip on the Discoverer she is a full-fledged big-time bluewater angler. “Just wanted to let you know that we had an incredibly amazing time on our fishing trip,” Kathleen wrote in an email. “I don’t think that it could have been any better. Capt. Carlos and Mate Kevin were stellar. I would highly recommend that crew to anyone. “Kevin kept the boat very clean and tidy and made sure we all had everything we needed. Lunch was excellent, also, as was the fruit. We caught a mix of mahi-mahi and sailfish, also saw porpoises and turtles.” Most recently we received this one: “Just wanted to say an enthusiastic thank you for the incredible trip we had thanks to your team,” wrote Jeff Broom, of Jacksonville, Fla. “In three days we got three marlin, two blues and a massive black, three sailfish, a huge dorado, and a good deal more tuna and mahi. “Thanks to Capt. Alex and his hard working deckhand Wilson, I was able to cross marlin off my bucket list of fish to catch. It was definitely a dream for me, and I know I speak for all the guys in our group that it was definitely the fishing trip of a lifetime! “You could tell how passionate Alex was about fishing. His favorite thing to say after we brought in a catch was, ‘Let’s get another one!’”

hen the Spanish conquistadors came to Ecuador, they were in search of gold. The Incas found most of their gold in the headwaters of the Amazon. I recently found gold in the Ecuadorian Amazon… golden dorado. I’ve spent 25 years on the rivers of Ecuador leading kayak and fishing trips. Three years ago, I decided to find golden dorado. Most dorado fishing occurs in Bolivia or northern Argentina. It just didn’t make sense to me that Ecuador, with such similar topography didn’t also have golden dorado. As a fly fishing guide, one of the most fun and sometimes challenging aspects of the job is finding new fishing opportunities. It isn’t unusual for my friend and co-guide, Bob Gernandt, and I to float some stretch of river we’ve never seen to develop a new fishing destination. Doing this in another country can be a bit more complicated, especially when you are heading into one of the biggest jungles in the world. Having a lodge in the cloud forest of the Amazon has allowed me to tap into local knowledge. It also helps to have a partner in-country who knows the lay of the land and can speak the language. Last February, my partner Angel and I spent a month tracking down dorado leads. Angel visited one community after another with photos of golden dorados. The first breakthrough was learning that indigenous communities call the fish by its Ketchua name, Gualo. That led us to a handful of possible rivers to check. We were dependent on local river transportation. The indigenous communities have used dugout canoes for centuries to transport people and goods in the roadless jungle. These canoes are 12-meter-long boats carved out of a tree trunk. We were able to check out three different sections of rivers using these narrow and incredibly tippy canoes. The advantage is these boats can negotiate whitewater while being pushed upstream by a 40-horse outboard. They are almost impossible to stand in, so they are not the best platform to cast an 8-weight fly rod from. We eventually transported a raft and fishing frame upstream in order to float a section of river. It didn’t take long to catch several Ecuadorian golden dorado as well as another species of fish call sabalo. Sabalo fry are the favorite food for dorado, so they are likely found together. If the sabalo survive the dorado, they grow into great sport fish. Their shape is similar to a largemouth bass, but they are much more aggressive and hard fighting. The golden dorado prefer rapids and fast water at the washout of rapids, while sabalo like smooth fast water between rapids. It presents an ideal situation for fishing because there’s no down time! Once you catch a golden dorado, you are hooked for life. These are some of the hardest hitting, hardest fighting, highest jumping fish in the world. I can’t wait to hook into more gold. ick Ratliff, 21, of Elizabethtown, Ky., a senior at Campbellsville University, will be fishing the big show when the Bassmaster Classic launches on the Tennessee River at Knoxville in March. He’s also riding around in a fully rigged Toyota Tundra that’s pulling a Nitro Z20 bass boat, and he’s holding a check for $7,500 for tournament entry fees. It’s all thanks to some last-minute heroics that helped him win the 2018 Carhartt Bassmaster College Series Classic Bracket. Ratliff fought down to the final minutes of the third day in an oh-soclose bracket against a scrappy West Virginia University junior, Nolan Minor of Charlottesville, Va. The anglers wrapped up the day with the two biggest bags of the tournament; Ratliff with 13 pounds, 8 ounces and Minor with 13-4. Ratliff, who is majoring in business administration with an emphasis in marketing, plugged along consistently, throwing a weightless wackyrigged stickworm and keeping his faith. “I had the feeling I was behind,” he said. “I kept my head down, and I knew if the Lord meant it to be, then it would be.” With just 30 minutes left in fishing time, Ratliff picked up three more fish that allowed him to cull up to his winning 13-8. Ratliff was emotional and stunned as family and friends hugged and congratulated him. “It hasn’t sunk in yet,” he said of the win and the Classic berth. “It was so close. I thought I’d lost.
