CAST is the world’s largest fishing trade show. Each year one of the highlights of the show is the New Product Showcase, in which companies roll out their newest and best. Coastal Angler and The Angler were there at Orlando’s Orange County Convention Center in July, sifting through all the offerings of the ICAST New Product Showcase. At the Orlando ICAST in July, Garmin blew the lid off the electronics industry with the introduction of its new Panoptix LiveScope. At the world’s largest sportfishing trade show, the most anticipated event each year is the New Product Showcase, in which companies present their latest and greatest in hopes of being named Best of Category. Awards are decided by a vote of media in attendance, and the Panoptix Livescope was not only awarded “Best Electonics,” it was named “Best of Show” out of 974 new products introduced in 2018. “To not only win the ICAST Best Electronics award, but the Best of Show award, too—it’s an honor we’re incredibly proud of,” said Dan Bartel, Garmin vice president of global consumer sales. “Panoptix LiveScope delivers the best of both scanning and live sonar technologies, and there’s nothing out there even close to it. These awards solidify our commitment to giving anglers and mariners the most innovative technology on the water, and they further strengthen our desire to be the top marine electronics brand in the world.” Panoptix LiveScope is a live-scanning sonar that gives anglers higher resolution and easier-to-interpret images of structure, bait and fish swimming below and around the boat than ever before. Garmin’s revolutionary Panoptix all-seeing sonar technology was the first to deliver live sonar images in real-time—forwards, backwards, sideways and below the boat—even while stationary. Now, thanks to the active scanning capabilities of Panoptix LiveScope, anglers can see images and movement so clear and precise that it’s even possible to distinguish between species of fish. “Panoptix changed the electronics game a couple of years ago,” said Jason Christie, Bassmaster Elite Series and Garmin pro. “Now, LiveScope is even taking it to the next level. The cool thing about it is the simplicity of it. What you see is what is there. The only picture that could be better is if you dive into the water with goggles, and I’m not sure that’s really even better.” Like other Garmin Panoptix transducers, LiveScope features two modes in one transducer—LiveScope Down and LiveScope Forward— and can be installed on a trolling motor or the transom. Depending on

the angler’s fishing preferences and techniques, LiveScope can easily be adjusted to change views. Point the LiveScope transducer down to see directly below the boat or forward to see around the boat. The Panoptix LiveScope system includes a compact GLS 10 sonar black box with an LVS32 transducer and a simple plug-and-play Garmin Marine Network connector for easy installation and integration with a compatible Garmin chartplotter. he Bahamas National Trust is the only non-governmental organization in the world mandated to manage a country’s entire national park system, which includes 32 national parks that protect over 2.2 million acres of Bahamian biodiversity. The Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park was the first National Park in The Bahamas and was the first to be designated as a “No Take” marine reserve in the wider Caribbean in 1986. Protected by The Bahamas National Trust since 1959, the Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park provides a look back at how coral reefs once were and a glimmer of hope for the future. Seen from the surface, the waters of the Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park are enchanting, with more shades of blue than Crayola offers. The real magic, however, is under the water where vibrant reefs teem with life. This is the result of almost 60 years of protection as a marine park.

In 1986, the Bahamas National Trust took the bold step of making the park a no-take marine reserve. The success of the Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park for protecting populations of key species and preserving the health of coral reef ecosystems is a testament to the foresight of its founders, who recommended protecting an entire landscape. This includes islands, nearshore habitats, like mangroves and seagrass beds that serve as nursery areas for many species, inshore and offshore reefs, and deep-sea areas. In doing so, they recognized how all of these areas are connected and how effective conservation includes protecting intact ecosystems rather than small pieces. In the 1980s the idea of ecosystem protection was advanced further by making the park a refuge for marine life where any removal of marine life or other resources was prohibited. Active management of users by The Bahamas National Park, including patrols of the park and installation of moorings for visitors to prevent damage from anchoring in sensitive areas has further promoted conservation of the park, resulting in the healthy reefs and marine life that we see today. The Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park is not without its threats, however, illegal poaching remains an issue in some parts of the park. As the wonders of the park attract more visitors, balancing ecosystem protection with visitor use is also a challenge. The case of the Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park highlights the ability of a large and well-managed marine park to not just preserve the beauty of an area, but also provide critical protection to marine life to maintain the delicate balance and health of coral reefs and other marine ecosystems. ahis, with their dazzling colors, are one of the most beautiful and tasty fish in the sea. They are pelagic and roam the open ocean, spawning year-round in the warm ocean currents. They reach sexual maturity quickly and spawn two to three times per year, releasing up to a million eggs. The good news is they are a fast-growing and abundant species, which makes them an ideal target for conservation-minded hunters. More good news—they are a perfect “starter fish” for anglers who want to give spearfishing a try. Most hook-and-line anglers are already experts at finding them, often looking for seaweed or floating debris. Whether you want to jump in because they are not biting, or you simply want to try something new, bluewater diving can be an exhilarating experience. When jumping on a weedline, you are treated to a beautiful sight of crystal blue water, bright orange Sargasso weed, and cute little jacks and sea creatures who will come by to check you out. It’s even more spectacular when you see the brightly colored mahi show up. They swim at the surface, so you don’t have to be an expert freediver to hunt them. They are not overly wary, if you don’t spook them. I always tell people, “pretend you are a log, and let them come to you.” Here are some tips for landing a mahi: 1. Use the right equipment. Even though you are at the surface, deeper water requires bluewater equipment with surface floatation (in case you spear a big one and it decides to go down). The float will do the work for you. Your local dive shop should be happy to advise you on the right set-up. 2. Use flashers and chum to increase your chances of attract-

ing them. Dive shops carry readymade flashers that hang from a float, or you can make your own (instructions online). 3. Move in a slow and relaxed way. Mahi are fast swimmers, reaching up to 55 mph, so if you do scare them, you will not catch them. 4. Extend your speargun slowly and take careful aim. If they are close and not moving fast, aim for the head (killshot). If they are far, aim for center mass. 5. As most anglers know, once on a line, mahis are fast, flashy and acrobatic. When speared, they sometimes make figure-eight moves, rather than swimming straight away from you like most other fish. Do not let them circle or make loops around you – just swim away from them and keep tension on the line. 6. Once a mahi is tired and ready to be subdued, hold it by the gills. 7. Once you’ve mastered spearing mahis with a speargun, you can try using a polespear for an added challenge. his is a good question. An answer, however, is not a simple matter, as there are some specific characteristics to be considered. Baitfish If you are using a fly that imitates the movements of a baitfish, it is recommended that where and when possible, you observe the behavior patterns of actual baitfish. How fast are they swimming? Are they swimming in schools or small groups when being chased by game fish? Are they stunned by game fish before being eaten as they are sinking, or in fishing lingo, “on the fall?” Most injured baitfish swim in a frenzied motion, so quick and short strips is the best retrieval method. In conditions where the baitfish are lazily swimming about, try a slower, longer strip to get your adversary’s attention. Keep in mind that baitfish always swim into the current. When fishing from a drifting boat, cast your fly up-current, let it sink and drift in the current until the fly swings at the boat’s stern into its wake. At the end of the drift, allow the fly to gyrate, lifelike, in the current for a few seconds before beginning stripping. This technique often results in a strike, so hang on! Crab or Shrimp If your intent upon attempting to imitate a crab or shrimp, make short, small strips giving the fly the look of a scurrying crab or shrimp. This move usually gets a fish’s attention. Upon spotting the game fish eyeing the fly and beginning his approach, stop the fly, allowing it to sit mo-

tionless. Then move it again in short spurts. This move often results in a hookup. Fish that follow the fly but don’t eat it? A very frustrating incident when saltwater fly fishing is when a fish follows the fly but refuses to strike. Many saltwater gamefish, slashing and contorting, will closely tail a fly right to the rod’s tip without taking the fly. It’s a very frustrating experience that often leads to the angler scratching his head and feeling totally hopeless. There is, however, an easy way to get a picky fish to take the fly. I call it “sweeping the fly.” When a fish has followed the fly to within a few feet of your rod tip (usually you’ll have 5 to 10 feet of line outside the rod tip), lower your rod tip and make a sweeping motion as if you were going to make a side-armed back cast. Don’t pull the fly out of the water, but keep it moving. On the sweep, the fly will move smoothly through the water, doing a great impersonation of a fidgety baitfish attempting to escape a predator. This move enjoys a high percentage of success. The trick is to exercise control over your emotions and not pull the fly from the fish’s mouth when it strikes. The hook set is always very close to you, so be prepared to allow the fish to run. That means being able to manage the fly line as it shoots through the guides.

hat might feel like the Black Friday of the sea to some used to feel like magic to me. My first lobster mini season commenced several years ago after a late shift at Da Big Kahuna in Fort Lauderdale. My best friend was notorious for “yessing” any last minute adventure I hit her with. When I texted her at 10 p.m. with, “Meet me at 15th street boat ramp at 11:15 with a bathing suit. Lobsties!” I knew she’d be in. She bought a lobster permit online and I clocked out. I could already see the coast peppered with navigator lights from the top of Beach Place as I ran down the stairs to my car, my apron strings trailing behind. I didn’t know much about this ‘mini-season’ buzz, except that it happened mid-summer at midnight and in our circle of friends, no girls

were allowed. I wanted in. After convincing my buddy I would be an asset, bribing him with Publix subs and reminding him that my playlists were unparalleled, he reluctantly told me when and where. I swapped my greasy uniform for a wetsuit and said yes to the cafecito the boys were passing around. The dock was jam packed with local hopefuls and empty hotel bags. It was 11:30 p.m., and the urgency of the night was palpable. This was to be taken more seriously than I expected. We fueled up the Palmetto, and it felt like New Years Eve riding out and counting down to midnight. Port Everglades was a wet version of I-95 at 5:30 p.m., but once east of the inlet, boats dispersed to their secret spots. Gareth gave me a crash course on the third lung and the tickle stick while I half listened and half marveled at the pools of light that broke the black of the Atlantic. I’m no stranger to a night swim, but it was my first night dive. I was determined to do my part in limiting out on spinies. Giddy with caffeine and adrenaline, I hopped in the water with three buddies. The familiar water I knew by day wasn’t confettied with colorful fish, it was a pitch black treasure chest and it was alluring. I followed my friends’ beams of light and their lead. I marveled at watching the bugs crawl across the sea floor and bury themselves beneath ledges. I tallied up the ones I let get away and knew I would be back next year to make up for it. We climbed the ladder back onto the boat. I lay in a beanbag chair on the bow, and we bobbed around watching Fort Lauderdale sparkle— half from cars cruising A1A, half from lights of the community with salt in their blood and lobsters in their livewells. Maintaining my credibility as the best mini season DJ in south Florida, I cracked a Miller, tossed one to my best friend, cranked up “Fishing in the Dark” and counted my lucky stars for having Florida on my driver’s license. I loved knowing that for the next two days, half of south Florida would have heavy eyelids by noon, and the lucky ones would have lobster on their dinner plates. I was happy with an invite for next season and memories from one of my all time favorite summer nights.

he last month has been a whirlwind to say the least. e're into September now and the fishing is starting to get good. Dolphin offshore are starting to show up. Last year, the dolphin didn't really start getting hot until September. We had a relatively slow month for dolphin in August, which makes me think this year will follow last year's pattern of a late-in-theseason dolphin run. Seaweed lines, formed from colliding winds and current, are areas where seaweed is bunched up along a long track. These 'weed lines' form up anywhere from 3-20 miles offshore depending on the day. Trolling lures parallel and near to these weed-lines is considered the best method for finding dolphin. Tuna, wahoo, sailfish, sharks and even marlin are possible big game species that can be caught trolling along these offshore weed-lines too. When you hook into a dolphin, watch for others in the area. Dolphin are seldom alone. If you spot any others, do not boat the fish you are fighting. Leave him in the water and quickly cast out

eptember is a great month to go drift fishing in Ft Lauderdale. The bonitos that have been so overwhelming over the past couple months are starting to fade away, and the kingfish are moving in to take their place. This is the start of our season for great kingfishing. The best kingfish bite is typically between 90' and 140' of water, on the green side of the color change and especially around the inlet during the tide change. Most of our autumn kings range in size from 6-15 pounds, with a few very large smokers caught now and then. Dead drift baits, artificials and live baits all work well for catching kings. This time of year a sneaky blackfin tuna or wahoo also might be caught on the drift. The hour and a half of the incoming tide is a great time to fish a fast whip jig for wahoo 4 FORT LAUDERDALE AREA

a couple pitch baits. The other dolphin will stay nearby as long as you keep the dolphin on the line. Catch 'em up quick! Dolphin fishing is a lot of fun, especially when you get a school of them around the boat. In on the reefs and wrecks, 100-300ft of water, bonitos and kingfish are still very active.

Trolling is a good way to bend the rod and catch everyone some fish. Occasionally, we'll hit a wahoo or large tuna trolling the reefs too. Sailfish are starting to get rolling. This is the start of the sailfish season in Lauderdale. Sailfish are the most sought after gamefish in the ocean and every year thousands of

and tuna, both of which prefer a faster moving bait. Sailfish are also a possibility this time of year. Anglers fishing a surface flat line have the most opportunity to hook into and catch a sailfish. A flat line is a bait rigged with no sinker so that it sinks slowly and more naturally. While a flat line usually does not get as much action as a deep rigged bait, flat lines will often catch the biggest fish of the trip. A ballyhoo or sardine works well for a flat line bait. Night anchor fishing offers a different variety of fish in September. This month is particularly good for anchoring up and chumming to catch mangrove snappers. The best mangrove territory is just outside the reef in 60-80ft of water. Chunks of squid, ballyhoo or sardines are great cut baits to fish for mangroves. This is also good area for mutton snapper using the same technique. Some yellowtails are also around and

biting and can be caught higher up in the water column. There is usually some good cobia action to be had this time of year. Over the next few months, cobia will be patrolling the reef and can be caught either daytime drift or nighttime anchor fishing. Cobia can travel solo or in schools of many fish so when you catch one, be on the lookout for others. They scavenge the reef in almost any depth and will eat just about anything you have set as bait... they aren't picky eaters. They range in size from 10 pounds up to 60 pounds and are one of the best eating fish. There's a lot going on in September and a lot of fish to catch so get out there and do some fishing! game fishermen flock to South Florida for our epic sailfishing. There is nothing to match the exhilaration and sheer joy of catching a sailfish. No other fish puts on such a fight and such a show as a sailfish does, leaping high into the air trying to shake the hook. Sailfish put the "sport" in sportfishing. From September through February, we're lucky enough to have some of the world's best sailfish action just a mile off our coast. Kite fishing is the preferred method to go after sailfish because of its high hook-up ratio. It involves flying kites which are used to suspend the baits high on the surface of the water. This keeps the baitfish alive and splashing on top, making vibrations and fish-indistress signals, which draw in inquisitive gamefish. Kite fishing is great for catching sailfish, sharks and just about any surface feeding gamefish. This is an awesome month for sportfishing in Ft Lauderdale. Have fun, be safe and Tight Lines!.

Legacy A FOREVER Tribute to John MICHAEL BAKER

n ocean child since the beginning, John Michael Baker loved nothing more than being on or in the water. Whether he was fishing, diving or surfing, the ocean was his passion. Sadly, he lost his life in a tragic boating accident just over three years ago. He was 17 years old and just days away from beginning his senior year at St. Thomas Aquinas High School. According to his best friend, Brandan Kelly and other classmates, Johnny was a great friend with an infectious smile. “He was just the kind of kid that you wanted to be around.” Johnny’s family and friends wanted to make sure that his name was never forgotten. Because of his passion for the ocean, the idea of a memorial fishing tournament came about. The third annual John Michael Baker Fishing Tournament was held in May of this year. Next year’s tournament is scheduled for June 1st, 2019. Through a partnership with Broward County, the Broward Chapter of Coastal

Conservation Association Florida and the John Michael Baker Foundation, the CCA John Michael Baker Memorial Reef is now a reality. After a year of planning, 1.4 million pounds of concrete and memorial structures were deployed at two sites just off of Fort Lauderdale. On August 7th, 1.2 million pounds of concrete, consisting of mostly old culvert pipe, was deployed and sent to the bottom in approximately 140 feet of water. This material will serve as an artificial reef that will attract many species of fish and other marine life. On August 14th, the

second phase of the reef system was deployed in 70 feet of water, directly west of the deep water site. The material here consists of 12 large concrete structures that will serve as a diver’s playground. The structures were lowered to the bottom by crane and placed in order to form a trail for divers to follow. A plaque listing all of the sponsors for the project is mounted to the first structure. A memorial plaque in Johnny’s name is affixed to the last structure. Both reefs will be formally named in honor of John Michael Baker and will appear as such on future charts and GPS systems. The coordinates for the deep reef are N 26 09.4600 W 80 04.1300. The shallow reef is located at N 26 08.4865 W 80 04.7344. “It was somewhat overwhelming to say the least,” said Brock Pecknold, CCA Broward Vice President and Habitat Chair, when I asked him about the scope of the project. He continued, “There are so many people to thank for steering me in the right direction. All those who donated funds or time making phone calls and getting questions answered as well as the hundreds of tons of material for both the deep site and dive site. When Johnny’s mother, Jamie, was telling me the story, I fell apart and knew that I had to see this project through from start to finish. I’m thankful to the family for having having faith in me. To watch the pieces lowered into the sea was indescribable. The only thing I thought of was Johnny is back where he belongs. This project really gave me a sense of purpose. Every step we moved forward was enlightening and without any hiccups and that is how a memorial of any

kind should be. Everything really came together perfectly to make this happen.” CCA Broward President, Mike Lambrechts said, “Our success in deploying this reef is the result of many great people that came together with the same motivation, to honor a young man who loved to fish and dive by memorializing his name with something that will benefit our waters for years to come. This project is a great example of the many things that the Coastal Conservation Association does for our environment, fishermen and outdoor enthusiasts.” With a permit in place for the next five years with Broward County, the John Michael Baker Foundation and the the Broward Chapter of the CCA Florida plan to add to this artificial reef system each year. According to Mike, upon completion, this artificial reef project will be the largest in all of Broward County and rival projects of scale all around the state. ith Summer winding down, the offshore fishing is still heating up. For offshore kayak anglers, September is our best month for mahi mahi. Look for the weed lines and color changes and you will find schools of decent sized mahi mahi ranging from 10 to 15 lbs. On a nice east wind I’ve caught some of my best mahi in 200 to 250 feet of water around the deep wrecks. My personal best 49 lb dolphin was caught in early September in 180 feet of water. My set up for catching these beauties includes a 5 foot length of 30 lb fluorocarbon leader tied to a 3/0 or 4/0 circle hook. Jigging over the deep wrecks in September has produced some monster amberjacks and the occasional wahoo around the full moon. If you’re in a school of small mahi, drop a jig deep under the school in hopes of pulling up a nice wahoo. On a good outgoing tide in the early morning, make your way to the color change in 180 to 200 feet of water for some decent 30 to 40 lb wahoo. If you’re using live goggle eyes, try slow trolling in 180 feet of water.

eople always look at me funny when I say, “When it comes to learning to spearfish, an experienced underwater photographer has a big edge over a seasoned land big game hunter.” It’s because the underwater photographer is an excellent diver, whether scuba diving or freediving and already knows how to get close to underwater wildlife for a great shot. The land hunter needs training to become a very good diver and get educated about underwater wildlife. Early in August, I took two interesting couples on several dives, where their training before and during made the diving successful. First were Wayne Tu and Yen Bebe, both IADA Master Freediving Instructors from

Use 30 to 40 lb fluorocarbon leader to 12 inches of wire to a 3/0 to 4/0 J hook with a stinger rig. With wahoo the stinger rig is very important. Kayak fishing for kingfish is solid this time of year. The king bite is really good from 80 to 120 feet. Try slow trolling a live goggle eyes with one on top and one down deep. Zigzagging in and out of this depth. My rig for kingfish is the same as for wahoo. You can also catch some nice kingfish by slow trolling over some of the deeper wrecks. Catching two lobsters out of long honey holes with multiple exits was tougher for Wayne because he had only lobstered where he could grab them by hand. However, he quickly mastered my snare and with extreme breath hold ability, had time to bring home dinner! Wayne also spearfished in Florida waters for the first time. Despite not knowing our species, his day was highlighted by shooting a big grouper in 70 feet, but the thin line on his new 7mm shaft broke right away and it took off down the reef. Put out a live goggle eye when you hit 60 feet of water while heading offshore. Most of my sailfish bites this month have been when heading out to fish and heading in after fishing. Drifting with a live goggle eye on top in 80 to 150 feet can be very effective when targeting sailfish. The blackfin tuna bite is winding down this month, but I’ve still caught some awesome jumbos in September. Jigging over the deep wrecks from 180 to 300 feet will surely produce some nice tuna, but you’ll have to be patient. My jig color choice is pink

With live bait, try setting up a drift in 200 to 250 feet of water with a live goggle eye or pilchard on top and another at mid depth. Bottom fishing this month has produced some nice gag grouper and even snowy grouper. Live baits have not been effective for me personally when targeting grouper. Try using stinky sardines butterflied bonito or any other type of smelly bait over the deep wrecks. I’ve even caught some nice gags in 150 feet of water. If your going to use live bait I tend to use pilchards and make sure your leader is at least 15 feet in length with a 4/0 circle hook tied to the business end. I always recommend new spearfishers try freeshafting with guns and slings, so we practiced target shooting by taking multiple shots at flattened cans and they quickly became very accurate, even on long shots. Many line gun shooters rarely pull the trigger because by comparison, it’s a hassle to re-rig, often causing missed shots. Fish were few and small in our warm shallow water, but Richard’s good sense of dead reckoning on their last dive, helped me find and recover a beautiful Lewmar 22 lb plow anchor with 30 ft of chain the next day!
