DESTINATION: El Salto, Mexico FISH: Largemouth Bass PEAK SEASON: September-July THE FISHING: There might be a few lakes out there that produce larger largemouths on occasion, but none are as consistent as Lake El Salto at producing huge catches of quality sized bass with the ever-present potential to catch a true giant. For more than 30 years, El Salto has been one of the world’s best bass fisheries, and it remains right at the top of the bucket list for travelling bass anglers. It is a place where 100-fish days are normal, the average fish weighs 4 to 5 pounds, and 7- to 10-pound fish are a regular occurrence. The best day on El Salto? Well, the lake record bass weighed 18 pounds, 6 ounces. The record for most bass caught in a day stands at 607 fish. El Salto is a 25,000-acre impoundment of the Elota River. It sits in the foothills of the Sierra Madre Mountains in the Mexican state of Sinaloa. A yearround growing season and the introduction of Florida strain largemouth bass in the 1980s helped build this big-bass factory. Abundant tilapia as a forage species as well as varied habitat and lots of sunken timber maintain it. If all this doesn’t pique your interest, it’s worth mentioning that many of the biggest fish caught each year from El Salto are victims of topwater tactics. INFORMATION: www.anglersinn.com

DESTINATION: Khentii Aimag and Khovsgol Aimag, Mongolia FISH: Siberian Taimen PEAK SEASON: June 15-October THE FISHING: Imagine fly fishing a river for trout that can weigh 20 pounds

or more. Now imagine these giant trout surface feed on ducks and rodents instead of insects. Sounds like a fairytale, right? Well it’s not. Fish like this actually exist, but the behaviors of Mongolia’s Siberian taimen are more aptly described as the stuff of nightmares than fairytales. The taimen is the largest, most ferocious salmonid in the world. Tactics for catching them include chugging giant topwater poppers on 9-weight fly rods, and the violence exhibited on a taimen’s take can only be matched by the ensuing fight. Anglers can expect to tangle with good numbers of taimen in the 6- to 15-pound range on a week-long camp-and-float through gorgeous Mongolian canyons. A trophy longer than 40 inches and weighing 25 pounds or more is a definite possibility. But the fishing is only part of what makes a Mongolia so special. The warmth of Mongolian hospitality, the skill of its guides and the beauty of its scenery make for an unforgettable expedition. Taimen fisheries in Mongolia are catch-and-release, fly fishing only with a single barbless hook.

DESTINATION: San Cristobal, Galapagos Islands, Ecuador FISH: Striped Marlin, Blue Marlin, Black Marlin, Wahoo, Yellowfin Tuna PEAK SEASON: January-April THE FISHING: Everyone has heard of the tortoises, diving iguanas and other strange wildlife that made the Galapagos Islands famous. The incredible bluewater fishing is not as well publicized. Deep sea currents carry warm waters and plentiful baitfish past this underwater mountain range about 600 miles off the coast of Ecuador. Blue, black and striped marlin congregate to feed around banks that rise to 300 and 600 feet from more than 2,000 feet of water. It’s some of the best fishing in the Pacific, and it’s only about an hour’s run from the docks at San Cristobal. The striped marlin bite might be the best in the world, with fast action for fish that average 200 pounds and get up into the 350-pound range. Blacks and blues are less frequently encountered than striped marlin, but they are plentiful and big. Fish from 500 to 800 pounds are the norm. Topwater popper fishing for yellowfin tuna is off the chain for fish up to 150 pounds. Big dorado, African pompano and Almaco jacks are bonus fish. And the wahoo fishing is good, as well. DESTINATION: Florida Keys, U.S.A. FISH: Tarpon PEAK SEASON: April-June THE FISHING: Although the Florida Keys aren’t as remote as many of the marquee fishing destinations this planet offers, the fishing is second to none. On the southern edge of the continent, where the Gulf Stream carries fecund waters from the Gulf of Mexico through the Florida Straits to the Atlantic, this chain of islands is perfectly situated to create one of the most productive marine environments in the world. Big-game sportfishing and backcountry fly fishing arose from the outstanding and diverse fisheries of The Keys. Year-round, there is excellent fishing inshore, nearshore and offshore. One of the most iconic of these fisheries is for big flats tarpon. There are always tarpon present in the Florida Keys, and nowhere else in the world do they run so thick through clear, shallow waters during their migrations. In ultra-clear water, sight fishing for these beasts from a flats skiff has to be the ultimate shallow-water experience. The size and raw power of tarpon are unmatched among flats species. The aerial displays of fish heavier than 100 pounds are part of what makes fishing in The Keys legendary. INFORMATION: fla-keys.com

Franklin County, Florida DESTINATION: Franklin County, Fla. FISH: Tarpon, Redfish, King Mackerel, Wahoo, Jack Crevalle, Amberjack, Gag Grouper, Pompano PEAK SEASON: June-December THE FISHING: Take a step back in time to experience Florida’s Forgotten Coast. Every cast could produce something different in one of the most diverse ecosystems in the world. Last month, Hurricane Michael lashed out on this beautiful slice of the Panhandle, but the fisheries should bounce back as strong as ever. You’ll find offshore species like wahoo, grouper and sailfish, as well as inshore species like pompano, redfish, tarpon, jack crevalle and speckled trout. In early spring, look for cobia and Spanish mackerel nearshore, while inshore you’ll find trout and redfish crushing topwaters. In summer, the king mackerel bite can be non-stop and tarpon are big and plentiful. Several species of snapper and grouper are always on the menu while offshore, blackfin tuna, wahoo, sailfish and more can be had. As we get into fall, big jacks will be tearing up tackle and the delicious flounder will be found as they spawn. False albacore or bonito can warm up a cool day in the blue water, also. From the mouth of the Apalachicola River to Carrabelle, you’ll find some of the hottest action anywhere! DESTINATION: Kona Coast, Big Island, Hawaii FISH: Pacific Blue Marlin PEAK SEASON: April-September THE FISHING: If a giant marlin is on your bucket list, there may be no better place in the world to check it off than on the Kona Coast of Hawaii’s Big Island. On the southeastern end of a 1,500-mile archipelago in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, massive shield volcanoes protect the leeward side of the Big Island from wind and rain, resulting in nearly perpetual calm seas off the Kona Coast. Three miles from land, the bottom drops into 6,000-foot depths while winds and topography create miles-wide cyclonic eddies that funnel nutrient-rich water up into the warm surface layers. These localized patches of biologically productive water attract big pelagics. Within sight of land, there is the opportunity to catch six species of billfish, six species of tuna, ono (wahoo) and mahi-mahi, among others. The main drawing card is blue marlin… big ones. Kona lays claim to more than 80 blues heavier than 1,000 pounds over the years, and that doesn’t include all the granders that were released. More than half of all the granders ever recorded from the Hawaiian Islands were caught off the Kona Coast. INFORMATION: www.gohawaii.com

DESTINATION: Kamchatka, Russia FISH: Rainbow Trout PEAK SEASON: July-September THE FISHING: Some scientists believe the Kamchatka Peninsula is where rainbow trout originated in a web of cold-water rivers on Russia’s eastern coast. With very few roads and little human population to speak of, this roughly 100,000-square-mile slice of land across the Bering Sea from Alaska is as remote as it gets. In fact, the only feasible way to access its hundreds of miles of trout water is by helicopter. Kamchatka is a place that makes even the Alaskan tundra seem overpopulated with humans. It offers a wilderness experience unlike any other, and the fishing isn’t too shabby, either. Trout that eat dry flies, streamers and deer-hair mice skated across the surface average 20 to 22 inches. Each short season, anglers catch 30-inchers that are aggressive and as hot as they come. And while the rainbows are the headliners, there are also several species of Pacific salmon that make annual runs into the peninsula. Huge kundzha, a close relative of Dolly Varden, weigh into the teens. And trophy grayling round out a diverse fishery that’s one of the most unspoiled on the planet. DESTINATION: Santee Cooper Lakes, South Carolina FISH: Striped Bass, Catfish, Largemouth Bass, Crappie, Shellcracker PEAK SEASON: Year-round THE FISHING: For a world-class freshwater fishery, the Santee Cooper lakes in South Carolina are as accessible as it gets. Interstate I-95 crosses Lake Marion and I-26 flanks the twin-lake system to the south. The lakes are connected by a 7-mile-long diversion canal, which provides another unique fishery. Lake Marion’s 102,400 acres of water are a timber-studded, aquatic vegetation-laden fish factory, while Lake Moultrie’s 59,900 acres have an incredible diversity of underwater cover and structure. This twin-lake system provides unmatched freshwater diversity. Marauding striped bass provide surface-schooling triple-digit catches per boat in peak season. The state record blue catfish was taken in 2017 and topped 113-pounds. Catfish in the 50- to 70-pound class are reasonable targets, and the big-fish population is on an upsurge. The system currently holds the world record channel catfish at 58-pounds. Need more? Crappies are abundant and commonly exceed 2 pounds, with 3-pound-plus fish distinctly possible. The system holds state records for black crappie at 5-pounds, largemouth bass topping 16-pounds and the former world record shellcracker that tipped the scales to 5 pounds, 7 1/2 ounces. ifteen years ago, a friend and I flew into San Jose and took a small plane to Quepos, Costa Rica, where we fished offshore on a 42 express boat called Fishing Frenzy. It was my first fishing trip to Costa Rica, and I didn’t know it at the time, but the over-the-top offshore experience was typical for this tropical Central American paradise. It consisted of plenty of tuna, sailfish and dorado, and the never-ending chase for marlin. The trip had such an impact that it became an annual event. Then, four years ago everything changed. I started some business dealings in Costa Rica, which allowed me to begin splitting time between Costa Rica and my native south Florida. It has been the adventure of a lifetime. I’m not sure I can say what specifically drew me to Costa Rica. I think it’s a little bit of everything. The people, the adventure, the fishing and the beautiful scenery are all truly amazing. The people are always happy and definitely live the national slogan “Pura Vida,” which translates to “The Pure Life.” The diversity and magnificence of the scenery is over the top. Delivering Coastal Angler Magazine throughout the country has exposed me to different and varying locations. Within a four hour drive I can be exposed to the volcanos and hot springs of Arenal, the gorgeous beaches and surfing of Guanacaste, the beautiful and exotic jungles of Golfito and the Osa Peninsula, the quiet beauty and fishing of the Nicoya Peninsula, the world class surfing and fishing of Herradura, Hermosa and Quepos, and even the cooler climates and cultural centers of the Central Valley. The tourism of Costa Rica is truly an adventure. From ziplining through a jungle canopy to four wheeling up a mountain, from white water rafting to rappelling down a waterfall, and even seeing sloths and monkeys in their natural habitats, the adventures are endless. Adventure definitely exists in the fishing of Costa Rica. In 2017 the Herradura Quepos fishery was named the No. 1 billfishing area in the world by the Billfish Report. Offshore fishing easily offers the complete line up of pelagic fish and often includes double-digit catches. This is one of the few countries where catching an offshore billfish grand slam can be accomplished in one day. Last month, Coastal Angler Editor-in-Chief Ben Martin came down and we managed to squeeze in one day of fishing on my 32 Luhrs, Dream II out of Los Suenos. Where else in the world can you catch two blue marlin, two sailfish, and 15 dorado in a day of fishing? The inshore fishing for roosterfish, cubera snapper, snook and even tarpon is also world class. t’s 2 p.m. on a bright, sunny day and I’m pitching pilchards in the shadow of a small bridge not 50 yards from a marina. As my bait turns and swims momentarily into the sunlight, a sudden swirl connects me to a solid slot-sized snook. My line has been in the water for less than a minute. “It can happen fast,” chuckled Capt. George Gozdz, who in 2019 is scheduled to host a new fishing show on The Sportsman Channel called Unfathomed. “There’s quality snook under almost any significant structure around here.” “Around here” would be the Indian River Lagoon (IRL) and St. Lucie River system, an estuarine wonderland on Florida’s southeast coast that stretches 155 miles and dishes up everything from monster snook, gator trout and delicious pompano to king-sized tarpon, jacks and a variety of grouper. Inshore, snook is the most popular target on a year-round basis. From December through March, you’ll find the best action up inside the St. Lucie River because the water is warmest there. The stretch from Rt. A1A (aka: 10 Cent Bridge) west into the north or south fork of the St. Lucie River is the prime winter snook area. I throw Yo-Zuri Crystal Minnows and Hydro Poppers in low light conditions and pitch pilchards once the sun gets up in the sky.” Generally speaking, tidal stage doesn’t matter much for these snook, as long as the water is moving. Look for heavy structure near 10-foot depths with good flow and you’ll eventually connect. “Keep in mind this isn’t finesse fishing,” advised Gozdz. “There’s no way to haul a big snook— they can top 40 inches in length—out of heavy structure with light lines. grouper will find their way into shallower waters. Every year we catch some really nice gags in about 30- to 50-feet of water on some big ledges and structures. If you are after pelagics, use live baits for the best results. You can sabiki up some cigar minnows, Spanish sardines or blue runners. You can either slow troll the baits or flat line while you are anchored up bottom fishing. I would like to clarify to anyone who is wanting to fish and might be hesitant due to the red tide water conditions, once you get out past the red tide the fishing is outstanding, and there are no concerns of the safety of eating the fish. At the time of writing this, the red tide had cleared out almost completely. Try and keep using local businesses and help out those restaurants and businesses that are located on the water and nearby. There are many businesses that are struggling this season because of the lack of tourists. We all must stick together to get through this crisis. Remember to always follow state and federal regulations. Be courteous of other boaters, and keep only what you can eat.

ovember is the month where just about anything can happen in the Gulf of Mexico off south Florida. Offshore water temperatures will be slowly getting cooler and the baitfish will start migrating south. Along with the bait, comes a multitude of species following right behind them. Kingfish, blackfin tuna and cobia are my favorite fish to target in the fall. This year we will have to travel a little deeper than usual due to the red tide problem. Typically, I like to fish the beach area and out to around 50 feet of water for pelagics, but this season I am anticipating the bait will be out a little deeper in cooler waters. The red tide in our area has been out to almost 45 feet of water, depending on which way the wind is blowing that day. You have to find clean water to find the fish in these conditions. Bottom fish are always plentiful in November, as well. The gag

Bring Back the Land & Water Conservation Fund By Patrick Morrow

ecently, I returned from a trip offshore to Stuart’s Sandsprit Park, ecstatic with a 40-pound cobia in the box. It dawned on me that Sandsprit Park is a priceless local amenity, and an example of wise policies encouraging public recreation and access. I’ve wondered how Martin County afforded to purchase such choice waterfront property. Well, a more than 50-year-old federal program called the Land & Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) helped make the project possible. LWCF also helped pay for Jaycee Park in Fort Pierce, Round Island Riverfront Park in Vero Beach and Everglades National Park. Thanks to more than $1 billion invested in Florida, we all enjoy LWCF-funded public lands statewide. LWCF funds are not your tax dollars. The LWCF Act of 1965 commits a small portion of royalties from offshore drilling to conservation and outdoor recreation programs. LWCF in no way incentivizes new drilling, either. The funds simply help state and local agencies keep us on the water, in the woods and prosperous. In Florida, the Department of Environmental Protection administers the program on behalf of the U.S. Department of the Interior. Eligible grant applicants include governmental entities in charge of public outdoor recreation. LWCF puts a dollar toward every local dollar spent, including donations of land and in-kind donations. Sadly, Congress allowed LWCF to expire Sept. 30. The House and Senate are currently working on legislation to bring back the fund. If

these bills fail, Florida would suffer profoundly. We’ve become our nation’s third most populous state, and are growing rapidly. Without LWCF funding, we won’t be able to acquire as much land for parks and conservation. It will cost our outdoor recreation industries jobs and revenues. The FWC estimates that fishing generates almost $9 billion annually, hunting $1.6 billion, wildlife viewing $4.9 billion, and recreational boating $10.4 billion. Ask Senators Rubio and Nelson, plus your member of Congress to push for LWCF legislation.

LWCF Works Around The State • Broward County’s Markham Park includes access to superb freshwater fishing in the Everglades, plus world-class shooting/ archery facilities. • LWCF put more than $900,000 toward Pinellas County’s Caladesi Island State Park, one of the region’s few remaining natural islands that includes a marina. • LWCF provided $30 million toward improving fish and wildlife populations in Everglades National Park and the Big Cypress Preserve. • LWCF paid for more than a thousand acres of the St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge. The acquisitions protect the watershed that flows into the last extensive healthy seagrass meadows in the state. • LWCF put more than $1.7 million toward the purchase of the 9 miles of barrier island that became St. George Island State Park. • Located at Ponce Inlet, the 52-acre Lighthouse Point Park offers great access for anglers and surfers in rare undisturbed beach, dune and coastal hammock habitats. • Melbourne’s Ballard Park offers boating access to the Eau Gallie River and Indian River Lagoon, along with many other park amenities.

n the heart of Palm Coast, also known as “the quieter side of Florida,” is a hidden gem: Princess Place Preserve. Named for its unique history, this 1,500-acre wildlife preserve is home to some of the best camping, fishing and hiking in north Florida. Its close proximity to Pellicer Creek, Moody Creek and the

Matanzas River makes for a great family fishing destination. Inside the preserve, there are many private campgrounds, with some featuring their own docks and waterfront views. Located inside the preserve is also a well-kept boat/kayak launch, which allows for easy access to the main waterway, Pellicer Creek. If you don’t want to bring your kayak or simply don’t have one, there is a kayak outpost named Sunrise Outdoors that will deliver a kayak to Princess Place Preserve and pick it up the next day. Pellicer Creek, one of the main fishing outlets in Flagler County, is an undisturbed salt marsh that opens up to the Matanzas River. Heading out of the kayak launch inside of Princess Place, Pellicer Creek will take you to a big body of water that may seem like an infinite fishing hotspot. If you make a right once you reach this opening, you will hit the Pellicer Flats. These flats are quite extensive, but they make targeting the fish much easier. At one time these flats were home to some of the best snook fishing in north Florida. While snook aren’t as abundant anymore, you can still expect an occasional linesider along with redfish, trout and flounder. Fishing these flats is similar to other inshore fishing. The universal light-wire jig head and Gulp! Shrimp combo is a go-to, with paddletails and popping corks being equally effective. At the end of the day, pulling up to your campground and not having to trailer your kayak is a great feeling. There are fire pits as well as grills at each campground that make cooking your catch quick and easy. Primitive campgrounds and other lodging options allow you to get the rest you need to be back on the water early the next day. ate October and all of November will finally bring what anglers all over have been waiting for, cooler temperatures and Redfish madness!!! The flats just west of the main Intracoastal waterway will produce large numbers of schooling redfish. Look to use some type of topwater for early morning bites. The Rapala Skitter V and The Rapala Skitter walks being the local favorites. For the not so early risers, throwing a small paddle tail with either a 3/16 oz or 1/8 oz trout eye jig head will produce best. Live bait folks will find that shrimp under a Leroy Little up top with a Beautiful popping cork or simply free lining will 26” redfish be productive. If you are after the beautiful and delicious trout in our region, finding fast moving water with a nice deep drop will be the best places to start. Topwater and paddletails will work great for these toothy aggressors as well. Want Snook??? Well look no further than High Bridge! This area is loaded down with one of Florida’s most highly sought inshore species. The bridge itself is loaded to the gills ( all pun intended) with big beautiful Snook. You may find conventional techniques for catching these picky eaters to be less productive Dupont with a gorgeous snook. than normal. My advice if you run into this problem, dig deep into the bottom of your tackle box and find something that has not seen the light of day in a while. These snook see a lot of the same things day in and day out. Don’t be afraid to think outside the box and get creative. If the crowds around the bridge aren’t your thing, no worries because very expansive backwaters in this area are holding plenty of snook as well. Look for overhanging trees, points with a decent amount of water, and oyster beds with some water movement over them, and you should find plenty of aerial action from this elusive fish. From the Tomoka Basin all the way up to Palm Coast, the Black drum are biting feverishly as well. Find structure such as docks, oyster beds, or bridge pilings and bulkheads and you will find these fish. Using a smaller split shot weight with shrimp and dropping it literally right next to the pilings and structure will produce some great results. Now for those who are not familiar with this area, smaller flats boats, Gheenoe’s, john boats, and kayaks are the best modes of transportation into the most beautiful expanse of wildlife you are likely to see in Volusia county. Ponce Inlet - Surf Intracoastal - Backwaters

ovember is truly a great time of year to be on the water with rod and reel in hand. The mornings are crisp and cool for those heading out at first light, the mid day hours are no longer unbearable, for anglers and fish alike, and the evenings cool off much quicker than just a month or so ago. The baitfish, mainly mullet and pinfish, are still around in good numbers keeping predators around looking for their next meal. Yes, November is probably my favorite time of year to fish! Whether you’re casting out from one of the many area docks, bridges and piers, looking to do battle from a boat or kayak, or hitting the jetty or surf in search of your quarry, November should be a very rewarding month for those putting in the time and effort. The backwaters of Spruce Creek, Mill Creek, A nice nighttime Snook that Fozzard Creek and Rose Bay and others will fell prey to a Gulfstream provide opportunities for those in search of Flair Hawk Redfish, Snook, Trout, Flounder and Mangrove Snapper. Early morning and late day action will be best using topwater lures like the Rapala Skitter Walk and Skitter V, Yozuri Poppers, and Bomber Minnows, while freelining a live finger mullet, pinfish or shrimp is not a bad idea for those using bait. You will be fishing “skinny” water so stealth is key for boat, kayak and canoe anglers. This time of year Ponce Inlet will be filled with Redfish, Snook, Flounder and the largest Mangrove Snapper of the year. Toss out a live mullet or pinfish, cut bait if you can’t find live, or live shrimp, and hold on as you never know what will attack Alisa Book and Terrell Pressley from Clermont your bait. For those using artificials Flair Hawks in 1 - 2 and Orlando with a matching set of Redfish oz, Storm Wild Eye Shad and caught in the backwaters on live bait. Kickin Sticks, Yozuri Mag Darters and Bomber Long A’s will all catch their share of fish. For the surf angler November really is a month of surprises. Redfish, Snook, Flounder, Bluefish, Pompano, Whiting and sharks are all roaming the beach in search or their next meal. Cut mullet, clams, squid, sand fleas and shrimp are Chris Moreno with a 30” Snook from the your best baits. One of the many bridge using a Yozuri Crystal Minnow. Tackle Crafter two hook rigs are the way to go. My favorites are the Snapper/Croaker rig, Whiting/Sandperch rig and Pompano Circle rig. Pull out a chair and sit back and relax. Edgewater Backcountry, Mosquito Lagoon & Ponce Inlet

ovember is the transition month, moving into our winter fishing patterns by months end. If we have cold weather this month the subtropical coastal migrating species will begin moving south where they spend the winter. This includes Tarpon, Jack Crevalle, Ladyfish, Pompano, Spanish Mackerel, other cold water species all will move in, including Sheepshead, Black Drum and Bluefish. November continues the bull Redfish spawn, primarily at Ponce Inlet, but they can also be along the Intracoastal Waterway, NSB bridges, and Haulover Canal. Anchor or drift, soak half or whole Blue Crabs, live Pinfish, or Mullet. Before the chill comes, Tarpon, Snook and Sharks can also be in the same places with the big Reds and will take the same baits. Some years the first hard cold spell can come this month, if it’s a fast temperature drop, shallow water lagoon fish can be in shock for a little while after a year of warmth until they get used to that first chill of the year. The colder water temps will begin schooling up our local lagoon fish, Redfish, Seatrout, and Black Drum, with slot size Reds and larger Trout on the flats, smaller “runt” Reds (not rats please) on drop offs and sloughs, school size Trout in holes and channels, Black Drum can be both in holes and skinny water. Shrimp can be the go to bait for all these Miranda with nice Mosquito fish in cold water as they will be eating smaller Lagoon Redfish size meals, more shrimp and less baitfish through the winter months, Drum and Sheepshead are primarily crustacean eaters, so shrimp and crab usually best bait for them. However early November can still be warm and not turn chilly until the end of the month, so late summer patterns and fish species will still be in play in Edgewater backcountry and Mosquito Lagoon before the first cold front arrives, live shrimp, finger mullet, mud minnows, soft plastic jerkbaits, top water lures all still good for shallow water Redfish and Trout, on the grass flats to the south, mud flats and oysters in the north lagoon, and Snook in ambush structure locations. Also Seatrout on lagoon drop offs with the last pigfish baits of the year before the cold shuts the pigs down. Schools of Jack Crevalle, Ladyfish, and Bluefish will still be in the area until the chill, morning surface white water attacking finger mullet, shrimp, and tiny sardines are great fun with fast multiple hook ups, natural bait, top water and other lures, and fly fishing as the fish are not picky during a feeding frenzy. This has been a banner year for Mangrove Snapper in the area, this should continue this month as the Snapper have continued to grow through the warm season and the bigger inshore fish will be making their way to Ponce Inlet and the door way to the ocean where they will go for their adult life stage. Water levels will begin to drop with the dry season starting and north westerly winds behind cold fronts pushing extra water out of the ICW at Ponce Inlet on dropping tides, schools of fish will be concentrated as the water drops out, the shallow flats will become even skinnier, accessible only to the most shallow boats and kayaks, fish will be near the edges of flats and oyster bars, drop offs, in sloughs and lagoon holes. The water will also be clearing with lower temperatures and dry weather without the run off of the wet season. The near shore ocean this month can be very good for southward migrating schools of Spanish Mackerel and Bluefish from near the beach out to about a mile, watch for surface activity like white water strikes and diving birds, they will be feeding on smaller size baitfish so match the hatch with small long casting shiny spoons, Gotcha plugs and flies.

ur next Coastal Angler Magazine food adventure docked us at the Swamp House Riverfront Grill in Debary, Florida. Overlooking the historic St. Johns River, the two-story restaurant is set in old Florida’s natural paradise. Sights of herons perched on dock posts scoping out fish and manatees coming up for air can be common sights from the restaurant. Located in the Highbanks Marina and Camp Resort, the large bungalow has plenty of seating in its main dining room. Its decorated with outboard motors, giant alligators, fish tanks, and scenic photography of local Florida wildlife all over the walls and hanging from the ceiling. The main dining room upstairs has a picturesque view of the river, docked boats in the marina, and the classic Florida sunsets. You can come by car, motorcycle, boat, or even pedal boat. The Swamp House Riverfront Grill has plenty of flat screens to catch your favorite games and has live music to enjoy all weekend long. The upstairs dining room has a large u-shaped wooden full liquor bar and an outside balcony. For those wanting to be closer to the water, head downstairs to the dockside tiki bar where you can listen to comforting tunes on Saturday and Sunday afternoons while enjoying classic tiki-style drinks such as Rum Buckets and Swamp Water. We entered the establishment for lunch and came with big appetites to try out the grub Swamp House Riverfront Grill was offering. We were greeted by a very enthusiastic, knowledgeable, and friendly server, Angela. She threw out some recommendations for us and we took her word for it. We started with their classic fried green tomatoes. Thick-cut, breaded and fried, and served with chipotle ranch for dipping, these vegetable beauties were juicy, hot, and kicked up a notch with their chipotle dipping sauce-a must have starter. Swamp House offers plenty of other classics such as southern fried pickles, chilled Blue Crab dip, St. I felt like a snake on Animal Planet Johns Catfish nuggets, trying to unhinge its jaw to swallow Louisiana style crab cakes, a prey too large to fit in its mouth. and their raved about gator tail to name a few. We had to try their gator tail, so we found some tropical gator tacos and gave them a go. The gator tail was fried, tender after being marinated in citrus, then topped with a mango sauce and pineapple chunks and finished with lettuce and shredded cheese on flour tortillas. After the first bite, you felt like a tender and fresh gator made its way to the Caribbean for an amazing fusion of flavor that I had not yet experienced. We were on a roll! I’m always down for a challenge and when I saw a burger named, “Nightmare at the Swamp,” I almost felt the meat sweats starting to creep up 6 DAYTONA/NEW SMYRNA/DELAND

on me. Served as two stacked jumbo patties with onions, mushrooms, bacon, BBQ sauce, and cheddar and swiss cheese, I knew I could never tackle it by myself and was thankful that magazine owner, Chris Chibbaro was there to help me. I felt like a snake on Animal Planet trying to unhinge its jaw to swallow a prey too large to fit in its mouth. I accomplished the goal and the burger was juicy and on point. For the extra-large appetites, this is the way to go. We finished with creamy, light, and refreshing key lime pie with a presentation that was just gorgeous. ovember brings fall temperatures averaging 76/58 degrees which generally causes the trout to school and the red fish to become more active. The snook have a tendency to get a little deeper at night and shallow during the day. ovember brings cooler weather to our area of the central St. Johns River and surrounding lakes and this makes fishing better. It’s a great time to be on the water for speck fishing. Whether you like trolling, jigging, or drifting with minnows, November is a great month. With the high water levels in late October we’re looking forward to a very productive season, if we have favorable conditions. Try fishing Lake Woodruff a secluded 2,200 acre lake known for great Speckled Perch fishing. Use live Missouri minnows fished under a bobber or drop a small colored 1/16 oz jig in holes within the cover. When trolling use a variety of small jigs trolled slowly across the open expanse of the lake until you locate active areas. One way to increase the size of your stringer is to always use the lightest line that will work for you. Ask your local fish camp for advice and current conditions. For Bass use a wild river shiner fished under floating vegetation with a weedless hook and bobber pegged at 2 ½ to 3 feet. For more realistic action, never use swivels, lead or leaders on your line and always leave plenty of slack on the water until its time to set the hook. By CAM Staff ictoria Watts, of Titusville, Fla., had only been fishing a couple years on June 9 when she caught the fish of a lifetime. Her 45.8-pound African pompano is big enough to claim the IGFA women’s 20-pound line class record… if Watts ever gets around to submitting the paperwork. Watts and her former boyfriend Tyler Baruch were drifting live goggle eyes and blue runners over about 300 feet of water out of Boca Raton Inlet. They had been fishing all day without so much as a bite when they decided it was time for one last pass. Well, that last drift did end up being their last of the day, because they needed to get to the docks and weigh a potential record. “When I picked up the rod, Tyler knew right away that I was about to get spooled,” Watts said. “He ran to bring in all the other lines and then fired up the boat to chase it.” After maybe 20 minutes of following the fish and fighting it on a 5000 spinning reel with 20-pound braid, Watts was finally able to gain some ground. She said they thought it was a big sea turtle when they first caught sight of it. When the big African pomp came boatside, it took two gaffs and both anglers to bring it over the rail. “When we finally got it in, we were going crazy,” Watts said. The IGFA All Tackle World Record African pompano weighed 50-pounds, 8-ounces. It was caught out of Daytona Beach by Tom Sargent in 1990. The existing women’s 20-pound line class record is 39-pounds, 5-ounces. That fish was caught by Karen Hogan out of Ft. Pierce, Fla. in 1985.

reedive spearfishing is the most sustainable way to harvest dinner from the sea. There is no by-catch. The challenge of holding your breath and swimming down to a great depth for a chance at a fish is a risk not many are willing to take. Many people fear sharks. Most spearos have a healthy respect and relationship with sharks. The ability to traverse the unknown and the challenges that we encounter are, in fact, what drives us. It’s not all about who can shoot the largest fish or who can go the deepest. Most of the people in the spearing community are actually more conservative than rod and reel fishermen. One of the reasons for this is that we enter the environment on a personal level. We see the species surrounding the rocks and wrecks we explore. We can decide if there is enough of a species at a location by a visual confirmation. Before pulling the trigger, we can determine if it’s a smart move to harvest a fish. We can selectively harvest so that it won’t have an adverse impact on the

ovember and December are great fishing months in the Indian River Lagoon and St. Lucie River. The water begins to cool, and with air temperature highs in the low to mid 80s, it’s very comfortable. The mullet run is finishing up, and species that prefer cooler water start to return. Pompano and mackerel start showing up in the ocean and lagoon. Bluefish appear in numbers during the mullet run, although there are always some resident bluefish year-round. Snook fishing continues to be excellent on both live bait and artificials. Fishing was good around the St. Lucie inlet and the river last

population of a particular species at specific location. This is something you cannot do topside in a boat. You might have hooked the last big breeding black grouper at your honey hole without realizing it. Spearos strive to avoid that crucial mistake. As freedivers, we are aware of the importance of management because we see it first-hand every day. There is a perception that spearos have an underwater machine gun and we are just mowing down every fish in our path. That is not the case. We train our eyes and our minds to know what species is what and what size they need to be to be harvested before pulling the trigger. We are very selective. We have only the breath in our lungs to make the decision to shoot or not. This mental ticking timer telling us to breathe makes us really focus on each dive and each shot to make sure it is the right decision. I hope to change the bad publicity associated with spearfishing as a whole. I want to help raise awareness of the importance of conservation one dive at a time. month, with numbers of over-slot snook caught. Local guides and some anglers have been using pigfish (grunts), pinfish, mullet, greenies and other baitfish with great success. The water in the river has cleared up some, and deeper docks with lights, the inlets and bridges continue to be the best spots. Snook will hit a variety of lures. My favorites are D.O.A. 4-inch paddletails on 1/8-ounce jigs. In stronger current, I like Shimano shallow-diving plugs in silver or white. Look for bait and birds. If there’s lots of bait, look for feeding fish, sometimes in schools. Big numbers of small trout are in the Harbor Branch and Vero area. I had several active days with 50 to 70 trout in the Vero area. Most of the trout in that area are small, between 12-16 inches. They are around patches of grass in 2 to 3 feet of water. Larger trout have been showing up in the Bear Point area, sometimes mixed with small trout. Gator trout have been caught from the power lines in Fort Pierce down to the St. Lucie Inlet by guides using live bait. My favorite trout lures are D.O.A. 4-inch pearl/white paddletail on a 1/8-ounce jig and mid-sized gold Zara Spook. I’ve been catching the occasional redfish on the flats around baitfish. I’ve noticed more blue crabs in the lagoon recently, which is a favorite redfish bait. Piers and mangroves are the haunts for redfish, which pull out deeper at low tide. Favorite lures include small gold spoons and gold paddletails on chartreuse jigs. I fish slower for redfish—sometimes dead-sticking a jig and popping it off the bottom. As the water cools, schools of mackerel and pompano will make their way up the lagoon from the inlets. Mackerel have very sharp teeth, so use a wire leader or a heavier fluorocarbon leader. Mackerel like shiny fast-moving lures, as do bluefish. Pompano will hit standard jigs, but I use pompano jigs, too. Many anglers fish off or around the south Stuart Lagoon bridges on the moving tides. Pompano also like shallow flats, and can be found by driving your boat on flats. here is hope on the horizon to alleviate Florida’s water pollution woes. In October, by an overwhelming vote, the U.S. Senate approved major water resources legislation and sent it to President Donald Trump. His signature, which is expected, would clear the way for steps to reduce the massive algal blooms choking Florida’s coasts. Included in a nationwide list of projects authorized by the Water Resources Development Act (WRDA) is the Everglades Agricultural Area (EAA) Southern Storage Reservoir. The project would send excess water from Lake Okeechobee to Florida Bay and the Everglades instead of down the St. Lucie and Caloosahatchee river systems. It would provide freshwater to the water-starved Everglades while reducing the discharge events of nutrient-laden output from Okeechobee that pollutes Florida estuaries on both coasts. WRDA also authorizes and funds the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to conduct a five-year study to develop technology for large-scale filtration of water to prevent and manage harmful algal blooms. While it might take a few years for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to secure federal funding for the reservoir project, a mechanism for funding the state’s portion of the project was approved be the state legislature in 2017. Once federal funding is secured, construction of the reservoir could take a decade or more.

This is a charity tournament with 100 percent of the proceeds going to Leukemia & Lymphoma NI. Registration is $1,500 until day before the tournament. Last year’s inaugural tournament had 18 boats participate and raised over $100,000 for Leukemia & Lymphoma through 20 percent of all entry fees and silent and live auction items that were donated by sponsors. After two long days of fishing, there will be an awards dinner with live music by country music recording artist Channing Wilson and Junkanoo performance by the locals of West End. Last year’s tournament paid out over $40,000 and winners received beautiful hand-carved wooden wahoo trophies. The 2017 tournament winner was the 48’ Viking Day Sea owned by Robert Desmond with a three fish aggregate weighing 109.6 pounds. Biggest fish of the tournament as well as top lady angler went to Andi DeYoung with a 48-pound wahoo aboard the Day Sea. We are looking forward to a bigger and better tournament this year with goals of exceeding the amount of money raised last year for such a great cause. t took me awhile to realize it. Early in my career, my goal was to fish for as many different species as possible in freshwater and salt. That meant traveling from the Arctic (Alaska, Greenland and Iceland) to the tip of South America (Chile and Argentina) and everywhere in between. Travel also took me to Europe and Africa. I fished Scotland for salmon, the Cuanza River in Angola for husky tarpon, and interior waters in central Africa for tigerfish. Add to that probing the Amazon and its tributaries for peacock bass and other species. My passion for travel took me to countless countries in pursuit of various species. Sometimes, I would be one of very few Americans who fished remote waters in one land or another. And, it should be noted that I visited all 50 states and fished in many of them for a wide variety of species. When I started in the outdoor business, the late Joe Brooks told me to fish for as many species as possible everywhere in the world. I took his advice. As the years rolled by, people began to ask where my favorite place to fish was. Coming up with an answer wasn’t easy. After considerable thought and deliberation, I decided that if I had to fish only one place, my choice would be Miami, Fla. Let me tell you why. It’s easy to reach by plane, car or train. You can stay in a five star hotel (if that’s your choice) rather than some broken-down cabin in the wilderness. And you also have an incredible choice of restaurants. Biscayne Bay lies at Miami’s doorstep. Among dozens of species, you can focus on bonefish, permit and tarpon on the shallow flats. Government Cut is the main shipping channel leading from the bay to the Atlantic. Just a few miles offshore, the Gulf Stream flows northward carrying warm water that attracts many species of fish. I should point out that right inside the cut you can catch snook and other denizens. Sailfish are a prime target along the Gulf Stream, with an occasional blue marlin surprising anglers. There are also swordfish. Dolphin are plentiful along with tuna, wahoo, kingfish, bonito and many other species. A coral reef plus various submerged wrecks provide a home

for grouper, snapper and other bottom dwellers, and it’s not unusual to find cobia. If redfish is your primary target, it’s a reasonably short drive to Flamingo in Everglades National Park, where the shallows host a large population of reds. Several other species make these waters their home including sharks, tarpon and other critters. I even caught a sawfish in this area once. The Florida Keys really begin in Miami, and it’s an easy drive to Key Largo and beyond. The Overseas Highway has been vastly improved, giving you access to excellent fishing waters. It’s difficult to find a place anywhere in the world that provides an angler an outstanding opportunity to enjoy fishing for some of the greatest gamefish. That’s why Miami holds the title of My Favorite Fishing Hole.

It was the first country to establish a Land and Sea Park to protect the reefs. Spearfishing is only allowed while freediving and by use of slings or polespears. No scuba or spearguns are allowed. As opposed to being a deterrent, the regulations have made slinging and polespearing a fun and popular trend. While some might consider it a challenge, the clear shallow

water and abundance of fish work in your favor, and no one goes hungry in the Bahamas! Regulations allow conchs and lobsters (during open season), as well as 20 scale fish like groupers and snappers. That’s more than enough to feed a large family. Always double check for the latest regulations, as these may change. If you are hunting, you will want to charter an experienced captain, such as Capt. Luke Maillis with Reel Addictive Charters out of Long Island or Capt. Jesse Leopold with Andros Beach Club out of South Andros Island. If you’re not into hunting—no worries. You can scuba or snorkel on one of the many guided sightseeing charters, which will take you to swim with sharks, dolphins and/or stingrays. There’s Big Game Club Scuba Center or Bimini Undersea out of Bimini, UNEXSO in Freeport, and Stuart Cove’s in Nassau. There’s also AllStar Liveaboards, which offer 4- to 7-day trip packages. At the end of the day, there’s nothing more satisfying than gathering over a meal and talking about your underwater experience. If you picked up seafood along the way, there are many restaurants on the islands that will be happy to cook your catch. hen Bob Sundstrom, of Odin Lure Company, created his Oozzie Jig in 2011, he knew right away it was something special. It worked wonders on the New Hampshire coast for cod, haddock and stripers, and he patented his new technology that allows hard baits to disperse a steady stream of fish-attracting scent. laska, the last frontier, is truly a remarkable destination that every angler should experience. Believe it or not, river fishing in Alaska can be done easily without a guide. I like to call it a “do-it-yourself destination.” The famous Kenai Peninsula is a place I have traveled to for several amazing fishing trips. The beautiful scenery in this area alone is worth the trip, and the number of close encounters with wild bull moose, bears, elk, bald eagles, etc. were truly amazing. While there, I find myself not wanting to sleep, since the summer days are never ending and the fishing is usually catching! My last trip to the fabled Kenai River was a last-minute journey

that proved to be one of my most amazing trips to the peninsula. It was mid-July, and I had been watching the salmon counts and monitoring the run charts for a few weeks. This was going to be my first attempt at catching the larger second run of sockeye salmon. Reports told of massive schools in Cook Inlet that were moving toward the river mouth. Predictions of a record season were starting to fill the nets of the commercial fishermen. As they started to near the river mouth in the town of Kenai, estimates of their arrival at my anticipated ambush point in the small town of Soldotna began to filter in. It was now time to break the news to my wife of this last-minute fishing trip from Texas to Alaska. Fortunately, she understands my passion for the sport and was in full support. The facts that sockeye is her favorite fish to eat and that I had a free airline ticket didn’t hurt. Four days later, the salmon and I hit the banks of the Kenai River in downtown Soldotna. Not only was its perfect timing for the arrival of these large acrobatic fighters, Alaska also increased the limit from three salmon per day to six. Jackpot! For some reason, the crowds were also lighter than what I had witnessed on previous trips. I was not complaining. I was fortunate to harvest my limit each day. With easy limits of salmon in the morning, I found time to head to the Russian River for some rainbow trout on the fly. This is where I had a 15-foot encounter with a momma bear and her two cubs. Fortunately, she didn’t feel threatened as the cubs were crossing the river on a fallen tree. She glanced at me, then to her cubs, back at me, and proceeded to follow her cubs across the river. I will never forget the sheer awe of that experience. A visit to Kenai Peninsula would not be complete without a hike to view Exit Glacier and the Harding Icefields. here may be no better saltwater fish to take on the fly than the tarpon. Hard fighting, high jumping and beauty make this gamefish the holy grail of saltwater fly fishing. However, targeting tarpon on the fly might seem a little intimidating to some. The thought of making a 60-foot cast in a 15-knot wind and presenting a fly to a fish pushing 100 pounds keeps some anglers from venturing onto the flats. Anyone looking to tangle with a tarpon on the fly should first get their chops down by targeting baby tarpon. There is no better year-round fly fishing destination for baby tarpon than the Yucatan Peninsula. Campeche My first experience with Yucatan baby tarpon was the in the Campeche area. The city of Campeche is a wonderful colonial community nestled along the mangrove-lined coast six hours west of Cancun. The city has spec-

The town of San Felipe is quaint and offers some of the best local seafood in the Yucatan. Rods, Reels And Tackle The tackle set up for Yucatan tarpon is simple. I carry two rigs. The workhorse is a 9-foot, 8-weight rod matched with a large arbor reel that can hold 200 yards of 20- or 30-pound backing. I fish a saltwater taper floating line. The second set up is a 9-foot, 9-weight rod and reel matched with a 30-foot intermediate sink tip and a shorter leader of 7 to 9 feet. This outfit works great subsurface. Leaders
