FISH OF A LIFETIME IN SOUTHWEST ALASKA By Tom Schlichter

o one has to tell you a halibut has taken your bait. As you set the hook with all your might, the heavy rod takes on a full bend, tip pumping rapidly as the beast powers down and away in a series of short, explosive bursts. Within minutes, beads of sweat begin to roll down your brow, and soon your back and arms begin to tire. The battle continues for another five to 10 minutes—or longer— and the enormity of the fish at the end of your line becomes apparent. This is the fish of a lifetime. This is why you came to Alaska! What saltwater angler hasn’t fantasized about taking such a trip? Yet there’s more to the beautiful, chilly waters in the far Northwest than outlandish flatfish. Ferocious-looking lingcod, giant, bright orange shortrakers, yelloweyes and other rockfish are also on the menu, as are king, coho and chum salmon, whether jigged or trolled in open water or tempted with the long rod in a river so full of fish you could walk across the dorsal fins. From breaching whales and soaring bald eagles to grizzly bears, sea lions, otters and endless miles of wild, unspoiled vistas, nature abounds in the forty-ninth state. Of course, where to start is a major questions you’ll need to tackle when planning your first Alaska fishing adventure. By and large, Southeast Alaska is the first choice if you are seeking major-league halibut. From the town of Ketchikan northwest up the coast to Chichagof Island, there are fishing lodges to accommodate your needs in such towns as Sitka, Juneau, Elfin Cove and Gustavus, plus places from which the most adventurous can set out on their own. One of the most popular spots is Tanaku Lodge. At the northwest corner of the famed Inside Passage, it’s tucked inside Elfin Cove, about 25 miles west of Glacier Bay National Park. From here you can get a terrific sampling of Alaska’s great coastal fishery, while seeing astounding amounts of wildlife and enjoying your stay in comfort. “The fishing is always great around here,” said Dennis Meier, co-owner of Tanaku Lodge with Jim Benton. “That’s a given, but we pride ourselves on making the entire experience the best it can be. Our skippers and mates are tops in the business, our lodge staff is helpful and courteous, and you’ll find the accommodations here to be first class all the way around. We may be off the beaten track, but that doesn’t mean we compromise on quality.” Tanaku is a full-service lodge with all-wood interior, vaulted ceilings, and wood burning stoves to keep you warm. As for the fishing, there are so many possibilities it can make your head spin. Halibut is the perfect first choice, since big ones can be found just a short ride away. Prepare to fish heavy and in water depths of 130 to 150 feet, though. Expect rods and reels suited for tuna and cannonball weights up to 2 pounds with a herring, pink salmon strip or side of pink salmon for bait. Even with all that heavy gear, a big halibut can still kick your butt. If you want to make things even more exciting (read: strenuous) try tempting these beasties with 1-pound jigs. It took me only 10 minutes of jigging in the Inside Passage to set the point to a 90-pound brute that beat the heck out of me before coming aboard. Over the next two days, I managed four more on jigs as we rotated between fishing for halibut, salmon and rockfish, depending on the most favorable tides. What a blast! As previously mentioned, salmon fishing is the other big draw here. While stocks of kings and cohos have slipped somewhat over the past few years, the number of king (Chinook), coho (silver) and pink (humpy) salmon is substantial. Anglers can troll for salmon, jig them, or set up a trip to wade a nearby river and catch them on the fly. Wherever you decide to stay on your Alaskan adventure, it’s wise to clearly state your wishes when booking a trip—especially if you hope to sample river salmon fishing or want to try for additional species like lingcod, shortrakers and various other rockfish. Not all are available from every lodge. While there are occasional off days even in this remarkable fishing wilderness—weather can be a serious issue late in the season—the odds are you’ll experience some of the best fishing of your life.

pearfishers seeking a little variety in their bottom time should take a close look at the waters off New England. You won’t find warm tropical waters off the Northeast coast, but you will find a freediving experience unlike any other. Destinations like Montauk, N.Y. and Block Island, R.I. have long been recognized for some of the best striped bass fishing on the planet. The bass blitzes around Long Island Sound are legendary, and huge schools of stripers in these rocky waters offer conventional anglers and spearos the opportunity of a lifetime. Matt Belanger, of Newburyport, Mass., is one of a growing contingent of divers hooked on what New England has to offer. He’s a member of TriState Skindivers, and a big 54.2-pound striped bass he speared off

Block Island in July topped the club’s season-long TriState Leaderboard Spearfishing Tournament. “The striper is sort of our signature inshore species,” Belanger said. “It’s a very skittish fish. A lot of guys say they can hear your heartbeat. You’ve got to be really stealth when you go after a big striper.” Belanger’s description of a typical dive was intriguing. With a 50- to 60-foot bottom littered with Volkswagen-sized boulders, strong currents and visibility averaging 10 feet, it’s a different environment from Caribbean reef dives. The veil of dingy water actually makes hunting stripers easier. On the drop, you fin down through a school of striped bass to the bottom. “You’re in the middle of a giant school of hundreds of fish,” Belanger said. “Then, when you hit the bottom, they always spook… all at once. It’s crazy. It makes this big noise, almost a boom.” The secret to sticking a big bass is bottom time. After about 25 seconds, Belanger said the school begins to reconvene. Then you must spend precious seconds selecting a target from hundreds of circling fish, while minimizing movement and sound that might spook them. The goal is to take the largest fish in the school. You’re allowed only one fish per day with a 28-inch minimum size limit. A 28-inch striped bass weighs 10 to 15 pounds. They get much bigger. The IGFA all-tackle world record weighed 81-pounds, 14-ounces. It was caught from Long Island Sound off Connecticut. The speargun world record weighed 68.4 pounds. Dave Hochman, who guides Block Island Sound, stuck that fish in 2008. Hochman is the guide who put Belanger on the big striper he killed in this year’s tournament. If one fish per day seems scant to travel for, there’s a lot of excellent eating on a big striper. Also, when you get your limit—with speargun or rod and reel—there are other interesting and tasty species like tautog, black sea bass, fluke and others. A word of warning: Area waters can get sharky, with great whites a concern. A good captain will know where shark encounters are least likely. he Rio Pico region of Chubut province, Argentina is known to a select and adventurous few as the best big-trout country in all of Patagonia. Comprised of an immense network of lakes and drainages flowing through the Andes of southwestern Argentina, these waters are spectacular, and they’re as far off the beaten path as it gets. The diversity of the fishery is astounding. The area hosts an almost unbelievable quantity of waters in all shapes and sizes, and the region is known for trout that reach “unusual size” in pristine water with very little fishing pressure. “It was incredible. I was fishing dry flies up a little spring creek for trout as long as my leg,” said Greg Baugus, who visited the remote

area with Hemispheres Unlimited, an agency specializing in fishing trips of a lifetime. But spring creeks are not all Rio Pico has to offer. Rainbows, brookies and browns were introduced over a century ago and can be pursued with a wide variety of tackle and techniques. nglers seeking stellar offshore fishing, including the best Atlantic blue marlin fishing on the planet should book passage to Cape Verde. This island nation about 350 miles off northwest Africa is a horseshoe cluster of 10 islands and eight islets that are a popular tourist destination for Europeans. The fishery is renowned for the consistency of big blue marlin. Billfish Report ranked it best in the world for 500-plus-pound blues, edging out venerable Kona, Hawaii by the numbers in its annual rankings based on 2018 statistics. Last years numbers were 110 blue marlin heavier than 500 pounds, including a 900-plus-pounder and one grander, which stretched the scales to 1,037 pounds. It’s the kind of place where releasing three marlin heavier than 500 pounds in a day is considered possible… because it happens. With big-game fishing this good, the marlin fishing is obviously the headliner. It’s best from April through July, with March and August usually being good as well. It’s a happy coincidence that this time frame coincides with the best seasons for yellowfin tuna, sailfish, wahoo and dorado. Four islands, Sao Nicolau, Sao Vincente, Santo Antao and Maio, harbor most of the medium-sized recreational fleet. Kayak Fisherman Lance Clinton: A Different Level Of Immersion Never Let Them See You Coming

irst time I met him we sat across a chess board from each other. From the first moment I could tell he was a winner by the way he sat and by the way he set his eyes on me. Right in the eye. I even thought his truck was cool, or at least the one I’d pick for myself. It was long in the tooth, scratched up and had been wrenched-on some. But it had good tires. He’s a man of many dons and probably successful in most things he’s tried. Because he not only possess physical gifts, he’s mentally acute. Sharp. And most importantly, he’s curious and a lifelong learner and those last two make the difference on the journey. I knew I could learn a lot from him. And I did. At mid game, when I knew he didn’t have a chance, I decided I never wanted to play him again.

Because the next time he’d most likely wipe the floor with me. The weakness of the talented and gifted is over confidence. It is their anti-Don. Lance didn’t see me coming that first game. But he wasn’t likely to make the same mistake twice.

And that’s a great trick in life. Never let ‘em see you coming. Because although modesty has taken a real hit in modern culture, being understated never goes out of style. Eight years passed and I was speaking with a friend from Costa Rica and I asked about Lance. “John, he’s like the number one fisherman in Costa Rica. You gotta see what he is pulling in from a kayak.” And I wasn’t surprised in the least, because he’s a winner (and what the dull and ignorant might call “Lucky”).

But I was curious so I went to Crkayakfishing on IG. And even though I wasn’t surprised, I really couldn’t believe the fish he was pulling in. And then the frequency blew my mind. It wasn’t like every month or so, it seems like he pulls in big fish twice a week. You have to see his IG Page to believe it. I found out he’s from “Looz-eeana.” Which means he fished bass at some point and the thing about bass fishermen is they’re sneaky bastards, (mostly because bass are sneaky bastards). Bass fishermen also develop casting accuracy and jig control but those are just details of how Lance Clinton excels at open water fishing.

He said, “I was standing on the beach and had a moment where I realized I was living on the Pacific Ocean and hadn’t really fished at all.” So he tried from the beach, hooked a snapper and that was it, he’s been on the end of a line since; but he knew he needed to get into the water. Alone. And quietly. I swim 500 yards from a local fishing marina in Puerto Escondido, Mexico and the first time I was underwater and heard a motor I thought the boat was on top of me. I surfaced, looked around and expected to see a prow but the boat was a speck in the distance. I don’t know if fish have ears but I felt the vibration of a way-distant boat. In a kayak Lance approaches silently and leaves the fish to go about their business. They never see him coming. And while the fish enjoy the kayak silence, Lance appreciates the kayak noise. “You ever done any trolling on a big diesel fishing boat?” he asked me. “Between the engines, the waves and the wind you can barely hear. When one of the rods goes it’s mostly a visual experience. Compare that to gliding silently on a kayak. You hear everything. A Fish Turned Me Into A Conservationist

ometimes it bothers me when I see mother loads of fish or big breeder fish dead on social media. Fortunately, I catch myself most of the time before I post a snarky remark about the photo. A moment of sanity and I remember that once was me! I am a reformed meat fisherman and I have no business chastising anyone. I have had my share of ego boosting, murder everything, rip some lips fishing adventures where nothing that swam was safe. I have a plaque hanging in my office that pretty much sums me up. It says, “I never dreamed I would grow up to be a Grumpy Old Man, but here I am Killing it.” Those who know me know I am a little rough around the edges, far from politically correct, and have a true passion for anything involving the ocean. I even sport a tattoo of Yemaya, the goddess of all bodies of water and mother to all people on earth. I also have a passion for marine conservation and have for many years. Years of running around those circles has convinced me of one thing. There is a difference between a conservationist and an environmentalist. In my humble opinion, Conservationists make management decisions based on science, while an Environmentalist may at times make science based on decisions. I am sometimes asked how I became so passionate about marine conservation and passing the message to future generations. The turning point was sometime in the late 70’s or early 80’s. It was so many cold beers ago, I don’t remember exactly when, but I do remember it was a fish that affected me profoundly. As I said, this was many years ago before everyone had to walk on eggshells so to speak as not to offend anyone and I will recant the story as so. I grew up in Pinellas County, Florida and in the 70’s the county started an artificial reef program which looking back was probably a rouse to rid the county of junk cars, old tires, and old cement culverts. In the beginning they served their purpose well. They attracted tons of bait, and just behind them the predator fish that fed on them. It wasn’t too many years later that people noticed old cars deteriorate in saltwater and hurricanes scatter old tires all over the Gulf of Mexico. The reefs were marked with buoys and the county published the locations of these reefs and every weekend boater or scuba diver had access to them. The thing was most people fished right on top of the reef and any time they hooked into a decent fish, it swam into the massive pile of junk below and was lost or broken off. We figured out a way to outsmart the fish…… Sand grenades! With the right amount of, sand, water and cat food we made balls that we dropped from a boat in front of the junkpile with the current carrying the scent back to the haunts where the nice fished lived. They would be curious enough to swim out of the cover and find our waiting baited hooks on the sandy bottom just a few yards off the reef. It was amazing how well the system worked. On this day we had a dozen or so gag grouper in the 8 to 10-pound range and a bucket of plate size mangrove snapper in the cooler when I felt a strong thump on my line. My rod doubled over and line was steadily pulled off the reel against the drag I had hammered down on the old reliable Penn Senator. Just as quick as it started it stopped moving. I knew it had made it into the structure. I could feel the vibrations on the line, so I also knew I was still hooked into whatever monster this was. I tried all the tricks I could think of. I pulled as hard as I could. I thumbed the line like a guitar string hoping the vibrations would irritate it enough into swimming again. I even went free spool thinking it might fool it in to thinking it had escaped. Nothing worked. Then I looked across the far side of the reef and tied to one of the buoys, I saw it. A boat with a dive flag up. A light went on in my head and a quick call on the radio to the safety guy left in the boat let me know they were spear fishing. I quickly made the offer if they came over and shot whatever I had tied to my line I

would split the bounty with them. A short time later the dive boat was tied off to us and I said he just needed to follow my line down as I could feel something big was still attached. A diver geared back up and started to descend. The longest 20 minutes of my life followed watching bubbles raise from the depths. Suddenly he surfaced and his eyes were as big as coffee saucers. “Man! you are not kidding you got a big fish on”, he gasped.” You have a jewfish and I bet he goes every bit of 400 pounds, but he is sitting in the front seat of an old ‘61 Mercury Monterey. “Just plug him between the eyes, I commanded, “and we can pull him out with some rope! “What the heck you think I’ve been doing?” But every time I move in to take a shot, he rolls the window up.” We never did kill that fish and that is the day I learned to respect fish and realized each has its own personality. I still like to eat a fresh caught fish, but my meat fishing days ended on that trip. Enjoy your Thanksgiving, Christmas, or Hanukkah holidays. Back to regular conservation news in January with some exciting things happening around FECOP. Buy a kid a fishing rod for the holidays. Note: The American Fisheries Society changed the name of jewfish to Goliath Grouper in 2001, three years after changing the name of squawfish to Pikeminnow after someone decided squawfish might be upsetting Native American Indian women. Theories say they were originally named jewfish because a portion of their backbone is shaped like the Star of David. Another is the word is a corruption of the word jawfish because of its large jaw. The story I grew up with and it was meant in a complimentary way is the following. Jewish people always had a knack to making and saving money. A jewfish spends its juvenile years in the estuaries or back country moving as far up creeks well into freshwater using mangroves or the shoreline for protection. You could always find them near the bank.

IGFA names Central America/Caribbean regional Council

The purpose of the IGFA Regional Councils is to create local organizational structures to help the IGFA drive our mission of game fish conservation and the promotion of ethical angling practices around the world. IGFA Regional Councils will assist IGFA headquarters in maintaining and cultivating relationships with IGFA clubs, captains, weigh stations and members in their geographies. From Costa Rica is Federico Hampl, Dra. Marina Marrari, Todd Staley, and Ramiro Ortiz who is the IGFA representative from Nicaragua and very active in Costa Rica’s sport fishing and conservation.

Todd Staley has managed sportfishing operations in Costa Rica for 25 years. He has been involved with FECOP since its inception and is former President of the group and was co-recipient of IGFA’s Chester H. Wolfe award in 2015 for his conservation efforts in Costa Rica. reetings anglers! As I write this in mid-October we’re experiencing a better than usual slow season. Still catching the big roosterfish that usually all but disappear in October. This has me excited for a strong NovemberDecember rooster fishery. If you’ve ever had one on you know the strength of these beasts! We slow troll a single line on the down rigger around rocks and structure and fish over 50 pounds are common with many over 80 pounds. The local marlin fishery has been strong all year and that should continue throughout the tourism high season. Blues and striped marlin are the usual species in these parts although some blacks have been caught locally this year. Although the sailfish migrate out in December, we do catch them year round here and they’ve been coming in at 100 to 125 pounds. Yellowfin tuna have been great this year. Big numbers and big fish. Several over 100 pounds and one well over 200 this season aboard Dream On. Normally the yellowfin bite will slow down by December but the last couple of years we’ve seen an extended season for these power houses. As always, the mahi mahi bite is expected to be strong with huge numbers and big bulls. Again, a December slow down just means we have to work a little harder but if you want a plate full of delicious Dorado, there’s a good chance you’ll be happy! If you like inshore bottom fishing, the snapper and grouper bite here is excellent all year long. The red snapper (referred to locally as pargo) don’t get

real big but they’re plentiful and good eatin’! The grouper in these parts are my favorite eating fish and you’re sure to haul up a boat load. Captain Angel has a couple of favorite grouper holes loaded with these tasty fish. ovember and December will begin the winter marlin season in the Guanacaste area. November is always nice because the Papagayo winds are not blowing yet and everything is still green from the rainy season, which is just finishing up. The winds start blowing a little more in December, which means we have to run a little farther south. The taller mountains block the winds to the south and we can have a nice calm day of fishing. The Papagayo winds are the reason why I recommend that clients book as early in their stay as possible in the winter. Then I can work around bad weather or slow fishing by moving the fishing days around if I have availability. Transdermal Scop Ben with a nice Roosterfish he caught on a half day on patches work well for the Bushwacker out of Flamingo anyone that may be inclined to sea sickness. They are only available in the US and by prescription so bring them with you. November-December normally brings blue marlin, striped marlin as well as a few black marlin. There should be an offshore tuna and wahoo bite as well. The bigger wahoo show up in the winter. The mahi seem to be around more than not so a good time for a mixed bag. Should be some decent inshore fishing until the wind starts blowing so hard that the water gets dirty. As of this writing we are in the rainy season. Thankfully Guanacaste does not get a lot of rain, so we can still fish and have some pleasant days. But when it does decide to rain, we just pull out our Pelagic rain gear and keep going. And the fish don’t really care because they are wet anyway. There are still plenty of days in October that we can fish but unfortunately most people don’t realize that about the Guanacaste area. There are marlin, sailfish Texas boys releasing another and tuna offshore now but nobody here to The sailfish on the Bushwacker out of catch them….. Flamingo. November and December can be some really good fishing and a good excuse to get away from the cold weather up north. The best day that I ever had in Costa Rica on blue marlin was in December so book a boat and give it a shot. It could be your trip of a lifetime. NICOYA PENINSULA REPORT By Rick Ruhlow • Kingfisher Sportfishing

osta Rica, aside from being Listed #1, by Conde Nast Traveler, as among one of the most beautiful countries in the world, has an incomparable year round fishery that brings fishermen here by the thousands. Granted, months, time of year and location, affect these numbers as some periods are better or more consistent than others, but it seems we are always able to bend a rod. While our zone was not seeing a lot of fish in September, we did manage some good days, and caught our biggest dorado this season so far, at 64 lbs. Undoubtable the dorado is one of our most colorful and fun to catch adversaries roaming the sea, and can be found almost anywhere. They will start showing up much more consistently in October, in large part due to the river runouts that create long trash lines along the current breaks. What makes this fish so special, beside how well they fight, is that they are delicious to eat, and freeze very well! November and December marks the start of the 2019/2020 season. Boats up and down the coast have been busy the month of October getting there rigs ready for the season. We expect to see a good showing of mahi mahi in the afore mentioned current lines, more schools of porpoise holding (hopefully) the tuna, and a scattering of billfish that will gradually increase as we move into December. This is probably the most beautiful time to visit the Playa Carrillo/Samara part of Guanacaste. The traditional rains that we received during the months of September and October have let up, everything is a lush green, and the sun is out, bathing us in its warm comfortable glow. The large influx of tourists does not really start till the middle of December, so the beaches are relatively uncrowded as well.

Playa Carrillo is still a diamond in the rough. Having lived and fished here for 30 years, the change is negligible compared to the more developed areas. There are still less than a handful of boats fishing here year-round, giving the area a very exclusive feel. This is in part due its relative seclusion compared to other areas of Costa Rica. If you are looking for the high end hotels, casinos, fancy restaurants and the other amenities that go along with this, Playa Carrillo is NOT for you, but if you want to supplement your fishing with adventure comfortable accommodations, good food, tours, surfing, biking, beautiful sunsets and experiencing nature in its purest form, you might want to give this area serious consideration for your next fishing/family/vacation plans. We receive a diversified group of travelers ranging from seasoned fishermen, beginners, families, students, couples and even the occasional celebrity, so, even if fishing is not everybody’s thing, there are plenty of activities to keep everyone happy.

Recipe Corner - Apple Crisp

hanksgiving and Christmas!! They are both wonderful times of the year, especially if you live the warmer climates of Costa Rica!! As locals here, it’s also the end of rainy season and what we as business operators start to consider the beginning of our busy season. For holiday time, we have brought some traditions with us, and have adapted new ones from the culture in Costa Rica. For thanksgiving I have been delighted to see the locals enjoy oven roasted turkeys, and for us expats having a tamale at Xmas is delicious and family cultural tradition. But let’s not forget that there’s dessert, I would like to share this issue, our family recipe of fresh baked hot apple crisp!! •1.5 kilos Fresh red apples peeled, cut into 1 inch chunks

• 2 cups Rolled oats • 3/4 cup Flour

• 1 tbsp Cinnamon

• 115grams Butter

• 1/2 cup Sugar

• 3/4 cup Flour

• 1 tbsp Cinnamon

In a mixing bowl toss the apples with the first cinnamon, sugar and flour mixture, coat well and place in a 2 inch baking pan 10x 6 approximately sized, will work in similar size pans. Without cleaning the bowl out add the rolled oats, flour, sugar, and cinnamon and mix thoroughly. Melt the butter in a pan or microwave, until just melted and pour into the bowl and mix with dry ingredients until they become crumbly. Spread gently over the apples and place in a 400 degree oven for 45 minutes or until you see small bubbles of apples releasing from the edges Remove from the oven and enjoy the smell in your house add ice cream of choice and use a big spoon, this is delicious!!! As a former chef on a megayacht, Jimmy T’s owner Jimmy Tancrell, often had difficulty finding local suppliers who could provide the foodstuffs and condiments necessary for the gourmet meals expected by his clients. During long days at sea under star-filled skys, the crew and staff would talk about their dreams of ‘life after yachting’. s the rainy season comes to a close we can look forward to even better fishing conditions from the fresh water and the inshore fishing will be on fire! Not to say we haven’t had a good rainy season but you have to choose your days and learn how to adapt to the conditions. We have done well in the mountains with a good bite from the trout streams the past couple months and if the water gets dirty… just go big! We have also been chasing guapote aka rainbow bass on the fly and have been finding a few nuggets from time to time. Early mornings sunrise until about 8:00am go with a chartreuse popper and then again from 4pm to sunset. During the heat of the day you have to go deep with a clouser minnow and sink tip if you have it. The machaca bite has been good as usual and if your timing is right after a nice rain they will feed aggressively! The same chartreuse popper works for the machaca as well as the guapote. If you are in the right river you can get them both in the same day!

QUEPOS INSHORE / OFFSHORE REPORT By Benn Gilmour â€˘ Jackpot Sport Fishing

OFFSHORE REPORT This time of year is all about dorado (mahi mahi) here in Quepos! They are abundant not just in numbers but some of the worldâ€™s largest dorado are present along the Costa Rican Coast during the next couple of months. Many of our dorado can be caught just 8-10 miles offshore along the current breaks where debris gathers after our seasonal rains providing some great action for both serious anglers and novices alike. The long standing world record of 87lbs was caught in Costa Rica in September 1976, every year 70lb plus fish make an appearance in Quepos and it is a real possibility that there could be another world record fish out there. On 16 November we have the DORADO DERBY which is being held for its second year at the Marina Pez Vela. Entry is open to all and costs just $250 to enter a team. Literally anyone can win this fun tournament which is based on the heaviest single fish, 52lbs was 50lb dorado for Captain Chiri & the guys during his the largest dorado 40th birthday trip aboard Good Day caught during the 2018 event out of the 47 competing boats, hope to see you there for this years event! We also get some world class blue marlin fishing at this time of year also. Most of our blue marlin are in the 150-300lb class with a few larger fish mixed in. Hotspots such as The Corner, The Crater, the drop offs close to Furuno Bank and

the Bolsa are always a good bet for marlin. Find a floating tree or similar 30 miles offshore that is loaded with bonitos or small yellowfin tuna and you could be in for the marlin fishing experience of a lifetime! INSHORE FISHING The quality of Inshore fishing over the next couple of months will depend on the water clarity close to shore after the seasonal rains. When conditions are favourable there will be some large roosterfish to target along the rocks and islands close to Quepos in addition to cubera snappers, jacks, mackerel and other species. Snook can be targeted close to the rivermouths on calm days when the water is not too murky. Inshore conditions will improve by November and make way for some of the best Inshore fishing of the year when the big schools of threadfin herring return. Shore Fishing on Lake Arenal

he Arenal Lake is a place where you can fish from the shore, and have plenty of space to travel throughout the area of the town called El Castillo. You will find many bays and points, sectors with many trunks of old trees, and rivers running into the lake. In this sector you can fish for blue guapote, guapote tiger, machaca and tilapia. I recommend fishing here when the level of the lagoon is low (in the months of April and May) to be able to easily walk on the shore of the lake. When the level of the lake is high, fishing is hard and access is difficult. You can use lures such as spinnerbaits, rattle shads, crankbaits spoons, jitterbugs and whopper ploppers, among others, to catch these unique and beautiful fish.

LOS SUENOS INSHORE REPORT

Great catch for Mr. Gary Gilmore on one of his regular visits to Costa Rica, fishing out of Los Sueños on the Wing Man. Mr Gilmore got this amberjack of at least 45 lbs+ along with two more cubera snapper and more.

nshore Fishing out of Los Sueños area has been pretty good for the last couple of months. We are still catching broomtail groupers at the reef, like the 60 pounder that Mike Narcisco reeled in during his annual trip to Costa Rica in mid-August. Also this year the number of big roosters that we have been catching has been amazing, like the one in the picture for Jens Laub of Germany that fished with us few weeks ago and got one of the biggest roosters caught on Wing Man. The big amberjacks have also been present at the reef, like the one for Gary Gilmore in the picture. This year the reef has been very productive. The bait staying around and the mahi starting to show up in good amounts makes the perfect scenario for having great fishing conditions for November/ December and an awesome incoming high season in the Central Pacific area of Costa Rica. Mike Narcisco with a beautiful 50 lbs+ broomtail grouper. Mr. Narcisco, with a big smile on his face, got this beautiful fish on Sept. 16 while fishing the reef on his second trip to Costa Rica. This, after he landed a 200lb goliath grouper last year on his first visit. The best of it was that both fish got released at his personal request. A great example of a conscientious sportfishing angler.

Jens Laub from Germany visited Costa Rica on his first trip and wanted to catch a rooster to take this species off his bucket list. After a slow morning he finally got this monster roosterfish, one of the biggest caught on Wing Man. Congrats to Mr. Laub on his great catch.

LOS SUENOS OFFSHORE REPORT By Captain Daniel Espinosa • Maverick Sport Fishing

oming off one of the great marlin seasons ever seen in Costa Rica, or anywhere, we are headed into what could be an epic “high season”. I have been fishing these waters as a professional for about 35 years, and I can say that with in excess of 20,000 bill fish released over those years, people who say the fishing is not like it used to be, are correct. Never have I seen these numbers of marlin both on the seamounts and offshore. We have seen several “Grand Slams” both off shore Los Suenos and on the seamounts. One of our boats released a “Grand Slam” before breakfast on a recent overnight Seamount trip. Sea Fly, our most recent 50’ launch, did back to back overnight seamount trips released 30 blue marlin. On each trip. Added to that marlin bite, has been some great fishing for yellowfin tuna and mahi which are being seen in numbers not seen in a while. Sailfish have been showing up in decent numbers. As always, finding blue water has been an issue because of runoff bringing mud and debris out to sea. This will clear over the November/December period. That should bring the bait closer in, and light up the sail fishing. I expect the tuna and mahi to hang around, and as we move into the “high season” it is likely that we will continue to see great fishing in our blessed area. If the stripe marlin show up in force as they sometimes do, “epic” will be an understatement. Actually, to refer to “high season” and “off or green season” as we have done over the years seems a little out of touch with reality. If what we experienced over

the months since the last “high season” ended about mid-April, was the “off season” folks had better get their bookings done. At a recent boat building industry event, people were shaking their heads at our fish stories. Calling the situation unbelievable is so last year. This year there are no words. Best get a line in the water. Some spring dates are still open, and the Los Suenos resort has great accommodations, dining and activities for the entire family. DRAKE BAY REPORT Another happy client with Capt Willy on the Reel Escape

reetings from Drake Bay, your “off the beaten path” destination for incredible fishing in Costa Rica. I have been fortunate enough to fish in some great locations around the world, including the east coast of the USA, the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean. People often ask why I decided to make the little village of Drake Bay my permanent home. The simple answer is that it’s the most diverse, beautiful and best fishing area I have ever experienced. Equally important, I wanted to live in the “real Costa Rica”, not a place with big hotels, marinas, casinos and crowds. The one thing we lack is concrete so there is more lush jungle and wildlife than cars. Most importantly as I make my living on the water, there is no fishing pressure. As we close out the rainy season and head toward the holidays, the fishing gets better every day. This is primarily because as the rains subside, the water clears and the fish return to their normal habitat. One leftover from the rainy season we really enjoy is a nice defined “weed line”. This line, which is held together by currents, consists of many things including tree limbs and palm fronds. Small fish and bait fish feed and hide underneath this structure. Mahi Mahi or dorado voraciously hunt along these lines and a well positioned bait or lure will often produce a bunch of fish. Mahi is not only delicious to eat, but a blast to catch as they leap and twist out of the water. Closer to the shore the big roosterfish, grouper and snapper return to the numerous reefs and rocks around Cano Island. This time of year the big Pelagics like sailfish and marlin return to our waters offshore. My personal favorite, catching big yellowfin tuna on top-water bait remains strong year round. his is everyone in the Zona Surâ€™s favorite time of year. Guys are getting their gear ready, going through their boats and thinking about being on the water. The weather is starting to change, the ocean getting cleaner and flatter and all of it coming to life. El nino left us a couple of months back so if I was to look into the crystal ball for November and December I would see lots of blue, green, and yellow. Blue marlin will be a common occurrence, both out at the seamounts, Fads, as well as near coastal waters. With tuna seiners long gone in the first 45 miles from the coast, marlin have made a great comeback. Conditions are also great for dorado, mahi mahi, or dolphinfish, whichever you prefer to call it. I call it grilled, blackened, or fried . . . all good. Later in December the bigger groups of sailfish will be moving in. Inshore the roosterfish and snapper fishing should improve as the water clears. Different types of jacks will be in the mix and light jigs will get them excited if the current is not to strong. Deeper water or a stronger current will require a little more weight. Popper fishing is getting even more popular and the topwater strike is really exciting, especially with a big cubera snapper. It is not as easy as it seems as the poppers need to be ripped across the surface fast as you can. It is a lot of work fishing this way. But very rewarding work! German Bustos has been head captain at Crocodile Bay Resort for the last dozen years after working on prestigious sportfishing boats all throughout Central America for nearly 20 years. lot of people know Costa Rica is the “Billfish Capital of the World,” but that’s not all it is. Double-digit numbers of tarpon and an abundance of snook can be caught on the Caribbean Coast out of Tortuguero, where rivers like Rio Parismina and Rio Colorado follow the coast and open up into the ocean. Days of 30 or more fish are possible. And the river-locked town of Tortuguero is a true gem.The culture has a lot of Jamaican and Spanish influence. The season here is from February to May. Great spots for freshwater fishing include the beautiful Arenal Volcano, Lake Arenal and the rivers running through northern-inland Costa Rica. Rainbow bass, better known as “guapote,” are the main target of freshwater anglers. They are prized for intelligence, aggression and great tasting meat. The Machaca is another exciting fish that has earned the nickname “mini tarpon.” The town of La Fortuna in Arenal is a very nice place to visit. Everything is green and full of life due to the volcanic soil. There are also hot springs. The best season for this area is from January to May. On the northern Pacific Coast, fishing is great all the way down the coast from Papagayo to El Coco, Flamingo to Tamarindo, Nosara to Samara, and Santa Teresa to Tambor. The sport fishing in this area picks up from May to August with species like mahi, marlin, sailfish, roosterfish, snapper and wahoo. This region is beautiful, and the culture is very European. If you get the chance to explore this region, take it! The best fishing in the central Pacific region is near Jaco, Herradura, Quepos and Manuel Antonio. I’ve lived four years, fishing constantly, and it offers year-round angling. The marlin and sailfish bite is insane from December to June, and from April to November the mahi come in huge numbers to debris pushed out by the rivers. There are also many FAD’s (Fish Attracting Devices) 100 miles off the coast. Overnight trips offer double-digit marlin and sailfish! The southern Pacific Coast offers many great destinations both inshore and offshore. The Sierpe River offers great freshwater fishing, and places like Golfito, Drake Bay and Puerto Jimenez offer killer inshore fishing. These areas known for giant roosterfish year-round, and also feature great marlin and sailfish from August to March, mahi-mahi from May to October and tuna year-round. All in all, Costa Rica is the fishing destination of a lifetime for freshwater, inshore, offshore and spearfishing. Come explore what the land of Pura Vida has to Offer. BIG BASS IN MEXICO

his summer I took my second trip to Mexico’s famed El Salto. It didn’t disappoint, dishing out some of the meanest 7- and 8-pound bass I’ve ever seen. Of course, we caught numbers as well, but this time I slowed down and enjoyed everything Angler’s Inn at El Salto has to offer. On this trip, the lake was down 45 feet. El Salto is an irrigation lake, so water gets used a lot in summer. Low water levels concentrated the fish. We caught a bunch on lipless baits, a few on jigs and a good number on crankbaits. By and large, though, the best pattern was a Texas-rigged Photo by Jon Tatum worm. It’s awesome how the lake is different during different seasons. It makes each trip unique. On the first day, guides feel you out to make your trip as fun as possible. Everyone has a different goal. Some guys want numbers; some want their best shot at a 10-pounder. On Day One, we landed 70 to 80 fish, easily, but I didn’t catch any over 5 pounds. On Day Two, my very experienced guide took me after the big ones. We fished for bass suspended in standing timber. It was a little harder to catch them, but the fish were much bigger. Down

there, you can pretty much catch fish any way you want, but you can’t catch big fish doing whatever you want. The guides at El Salto have the big-fish patterns nailed down through the seasons. Last year, I went in January and we caught big fish deep cranking, so the pattern had changed completely. One thing that didn’t change was how mean the fish are. That brings me to my other takeaway: Big fish require the best gear you can throw. I fished extensively with the new 11-inch X Zone Blitz Worm, in both plum and red bug. They bit the fire out of both colors. The bait has very little salt content, so it floats off the bottom, which gives it much better action. The baits are also very soft and easy to rig. Mustad just came out with a complete line of tungsten, and I put it to the test. We used a 3/8-ounce tungsten bullet weight, and loved it. The Mustad line has Titan X finish on it, which is awesome. Most objects in nature aren’t shiny, so this mattestyle Titan X finish is more natural. The sizes are etched onto each weight. It’s a nice touch that makes selection easier. A 5/0 Grip Pin Big Bite hook is the perfect big-bass hook. There were a few sessions where I caught at least 50 fish on one hook. That’s one of the best things about a Mustad hook. Drag it across rocks and set the hook over and over. The points on their hooks will not roll. Feel free to ask me on social media about the trip and any of the gear mentioned here.

ake Picachos, Mexico might not warrant the title of the world’s best trophy lake, but it might just be the world’s most fun bass fishery. Picachos is the newest of northwest Mexico’s storied bass fisheries. The dam for this 14,000-acre reservoir on the Presidio River was completed in 2009. It was opened to anglers in 2013. A decade since its formation, the lake is pumping out almost unbelievable numbers of 3- to 5-pound fish. According to Angler’s Inn International, it’s not unusual for a pair of skilled anglers to catch 200 to 300 fish a day. According to Ron Speed Jr.’s daily reports, Picachos regularly produces 150-fish days with big fish each day topping out at 6 to 8 pounds. That’s incredible action for solid fish. The lake record is 12-pounds, 14-ounces, and the bar is expected to rise as the fishery matures. An ample forage base of tilapia, plenty of heavy cover, clean water and catch-and-release regulations point to a bright future. Mornings and evenings generally see an outstanding topwater bite, which is a ton of fun for conventional anglers with walking baits and poppers as well as for fly-rodders throwing bass bugs. Spinnerbaits, lizards, stickbaits, Flukes and shallow-running crankbaits also provide action that leads to bleeding bass thumb. Lake Picachos is about 30 miles inland from the Pacific Coast resort town Mazatlán. Fishing is great year-round, with a peak from February into June. Trout Unlimited recently joined other groups in filing suit against the EPA, alleging that the EPA ignored science and the potential impacts of developing the mine when it withdrew the Bristol Bay Proposed Determination, which are protections for the region that have been in place since 2014. “Billions of dollars have been spent in attempt to restore salmon runs in the Pacific Northwest. Meanwhile, Bristol Bay sets records for its salmon returns year after year. All we need to do is have the humility and common-sense to leave this landscape alone,” said Chris Wood, CEO of Trout Unlimited. “Sacrificing a place such as Bristol Bay for some gold is a short-sighted fools-errand. We are not a litigious organization, but we and millions of other sportsmen and women will not allow greed to compromise the most important salmon fishery on the planet.”

The permit is the Holy Grail for many serious saltwater fly anglers. Many, including me, have traveled and spent endless days pursuing these great gamefish with little to show for our efforts. Of course, the challenge is what’s special about permit fishing, not the number of fish brought to hand. However, there is one place where an angler can have great success catching permit on the fly; that place is the Yucatan Peninsula’s Punta Allen. Here, just a few kilometers south of Tulum in the Sian Ka’an Biosphere, is the world’s most fertile and diverse permit saltwater fly fishery. The Unicorn of the Flats Ghostlike, spooky and finicky are three words to describe permit. It is one of the most difficult saltwater fish to catch on the fly and has been the Achilles heel for many saltwater fly angers. But if there is one destination where one can successfully sight cast to large schools of permit consistently, it’s the Sian Ka’an Biosphere. Because of the vast numbers of permit ranging from 2 to 20 pounds, a fly angler will have multiple shots per day. In addition, Yucatan permit are aggressive eaters, making them a great target for the less-experienced or first-time saltwater fly anglers. Flies and Tackle The primary food items for permit are crabs and shrimp. A good selection of these patterns will give the angler the best chance at success. For crab patterns, I like Merkins and Ragheads in sizes 4 and 6. I find the color of the fly should match the color of the habitat you’re fishing. For example, if you’re fishing over light colored sand, then a fly pattern should be tan or even white. If you’re fishing in turtle grass or a darker bottom, then a green or even a dark brown works best. Tackle A 9-foot, 9-weight rod matched with a large arbor reel that holds 250 yards of 30-pound Hi Viz Dacron or micron backing is the perfect combo for Yucatan permit. Since a majority of the fishing is in shallow water, I suggest only using a weight-forward tropical floating line. Keep your leaders long: 10 to 12 feet with 16- to 20-pound tippets. Casting to Permit It’s important to be able to quickly and accurately cast 30 to 60 feet when targeting permit on the flats. Your ability to make longer casts will increase your chances of catching more fish. Of course, you can hook a permit close to the boat, but it’s always to your advantage be able to make the long cast when the opportunity presents itself. The back-hand cast is another to be able to execute. Permit schools will often present themselves on the opposite side of the boat, so being able to make a quick back cast is very important.
