Losing Count On The Clinch River By Nick Carter
E
very now and then, there are magical days when all the variables align. It can seem almost too easy. The fish just eat what you’re throwing, and it’s glorious. Of course, these days happen more often for those who have a fishery dialed in. And for the rest of us who can’t be on the water daily to learn a river, the next best thing is to go with someone who can. That’s where Capt. Dane Law and Bill Stranahan, of Southeastern Anglers, stepped in during a recent trip on the Clinch River, northwest of Knoxville, Tenn. The Clinch is one of the Southeast’s
premier trout fisheries. It is a 13-mile tailwater fed by cold, oxygenated waters of Norris Dam. Tennessee stocks the river with rainbow and brown trout, and bank anglers line up near stocking points to pitch baits for a seven-fish limit. That’s all well and good, but for anglers in search of more than a fish dinner, the river is great because of all the trout that survive this initial onslaught. There is some natural reproduction in the river, and with a 14- to 20-inch protected length range and an allowance of one keeper fish longer than 20 inches, trout that reach the protected slot are free to grow. And they grow quickly. The Clinch has gained a reputation for being fickle and for requiring delicate presentation of tiny flies. “The Grinch or The Cinch,” is a clichéd phrase Bill related to me while launching his jet-powered G3 on a hot Tuesday morning in June. By mid-afternoon, it was difficult to imagine this river being stingy. Maybe a minute into our first drift, Dane hooked up with a gorgeous rainbow that pushed the upper end of that 20-inch slot. It was an indicator of good things to come. The action remained constant for the next five hours. We must have caught 30 or more trout, including four that measured 18 to 20 inches and a couple presumably larger fish that snapped the 6x tippet required to draw strikes. And it was simple fishing. Dane and Bill showed up armed to the teeth with 5- to 7-weight rods and reels, with everything from floating to 300-grain sinking lines. Their flies ran the gamut from tiny midges to big articulated streamers. On this day, the vast majority of their arsenal saw no action. The only thing we needed was Bill’s initial suggestion: a size 16 bead-head Prince Nymph dropped 5 feet beneath a foam hopper. Several times, Dane or Bill remarked that the river normally doesn’t fish this ridiculously well. Using Technology For Rhode Island Stripers By Tom Schlichter
I
t’s hard to find a place better suited for catching trophy striped bass than the waters surrounding Rhode Island’s Narragansett Bay area. With a mix of rocky bottom, strong currents and tons of forage species in nearby ocean waters, plus miles of mud flats inside the bay, this stretch is loaded with big fish potential. Flippin Out Charters skipper BJ Silvia has mined these waters for more than 30 years. He’s boated hundreds of bass in the 40-pound class, plus five weighing 50 to 54 pounds… and he thinks the fishing here is on the verge of getting better! “The number of stripers coming through the ranks right now is amazing,” he said, “We’ve got plenty of cow bass, plus an unprecedented number of fish ranging from shorts to 20 pounds. If we protect the young year classes over the next few years, the potential is outstanding.”

The shallow waters of Narragansett Bay receive a solid shot of big stripers each May, the 48-year old revealed. Those fish drop out of the Hudson River and spread across the mud flats, traveling in small wolf packs that most anglers target with random casting. Using the latest technology, however, gives Silvia a big edge. He’s hooked on side-scanning sonar to isolate the bass packs on the flats. “Any fishfinder can spot fish below the boat,” Silvia emphasized, “but my Humminbird Solix 15 scans the surrounding waters with super-clear images that push out several hundred feet. For the sharpest images, I set my system to scan within 100 feet. Once we spot these fish, we target them with big plugs like a Musky Mania Doc or topwater spooks. Last spring, the big bass were more spread out than usual, so my Solix proved a lifesaver. It helped get me on the fish quickly, which resulted in more fishing and less searching around.” Technology counts later in the summer as well, added Silvia. Once the stripers leave the shallows, they hold around bottom humps in ocean depths ranging from 20 to 50 feet during July and August. Here, the striper sharpie targets cows using live eels. He’ll fish one weightless rig, one with a small egg sinker, and a third with more weight based on drift speed. On tough days, he said, the biggest bass often prefer the lightest rigs. Focusing again on his technological edge, Silvia noted the bestknown striper spots see tremendous pressure, so he uses his Humminbird fishfinders (he also has a Solix 12 and Solix 10) to look for isolated pieces that don’t show up on the charts. “I use the auto-chart live feature to record them as way points,” he said. “That way, I’m hitting small spots others miss. America’s Boating Club Delivers Boating Education
W
hen it comes to boating education, nothing beats getting out on the water with an instructor. Whether you are learning about the subtlety of throttle control while docking or decision making based on the rules of the road while underway, having a knowledgeable instructor to guide you is irreplaceable. A good source for on-the-water boater education is United States Power Squadrons – America’s Boating Club. Your local squadron will have a schedule of courses covering topics like boat safety equipment and procedures, basic vessel operation and controls, close quarters maneuvering, operating a boat on plane, docking, anchoring, emergency maneuvers and man overboard recovery, to name a few. To bolster your on-the-water training, America’s Boating Club has released digital assets designed to enhance boating education with the Digital Media Library and America’s Boating Channel. Funded by grants from the United States Coast Guard, United States Power Squadrons – America’s Boating Club’s Digital Media Library houses multiple formats of digital media focused on boating safety and boater education including videos, slideshows, images, animations, audio presentations and instructor’s manuals. Videos have also been made available through a YouTube channel, America’s Boating Channel, to allow users to stream video content online. Videos and animations cover a wide range of topics and are organized into sections like Planning, Departure, Underway and Arrival. Each video goes into more detail tackling subjects like life jackets, vessel inspections, steering basics, anchoring, man overboard, docking, mooring and shoreline landings. “In an ongoing effort to make boater education more accessible, we have turned to digital and online resources to disseminate the latest information,” said Gary Cheney, chief commander, United States Power Squadrons. “The mission of the United States Power Squadrons is to promote safe boating through education. By offering video assets through the Digital Media Library and America’s Boating Channel, we give
individuals access to vital boating information that they can view at home or on the go. It’s all part of making it easier than ever before to become a safer and more knowledgeable boater.” Providing original multimedia content instructors can use to enhance their classroom offerings, the Digital Media Library lets individuals view videos at home to reinforce what is learned in class. Videos provide an introduction to a range of boating topics, essential skills and etiquette. Links to “Learn More” at the end of each video promote further education. New content is added regularly. A new video series currently in production includes four videos on various aspects of life jackets, six on personal watercraft operation and one each on accident reporting, frequently asked questions about navigation rules, visual distress signals and mobile maritime service identities. Hunting Sharks

M
ost anglers go out of their way to avoid hooking a shark. In their minds, anyone who actually hunts sharks doesn’t know much about fishing and has his priorities mixed up. They reason that these toothy critters don’t put up much of a battle. With sharks of any size and particularly in relatively shallow water, you’re going to have to crank the engine and chase them with the boat. Two of the toughest and most memorable battles I have ever endured involved sharks that pounced on a fish I had almost landed. In the first instance, I was leading a relatively small wahoo to the boat so we could release it. Suddenly, an oversized mako shark ate half of that fish in one bite and inadvertently got itself hooked. We chased that mako forever, and I put every ounce of pressure on it that I could until my arms and shoulders turned numb from the pain. During all that time, we hadn’t even slowed the shark down. Finally, in desperation, I purposely broke the shark off. The second battle took place over Pinas Reef in Panama, where I was getting close to landing a 250-pound black marlin. That’s when some unseen creature devoured the marlin in three bites. It took over an hour before I could bring that shark alongside the boat. It had to weigh at least 1,500 pounds and was half as long as the boat. That, by the way, was the biggest fish I’ve ever caught. Whenever and wherever you fish, keep a rod rigged and ready for sharks. It should have an abrasion leader about 10
feet long and 12 to 18 inches of single-strand wire between the abrasion leader and the hook. A circle hook should be your first choice because its hooking ratio is higher than any other type. And remember that you don’t have to set it. Unless you are only trolling, you want to be able to cast a bait in front of a cruising shark and retrieve it on the surface or close to it. A balao or a strip of natural bait should do the job. Casting to a cruising shark is exciting sport, but in areas that boast plenty of sharks, you can also anchor the boat and chum them with chunks of natural bait. You’ll need a quick release on the anchor, because a hooked shark will take off at considerable speed. Keep in mind that sharks on the flats or in relatively shallow water can be easily spooked, so your cast has to be on target. The bait should ease in front of the shark and appear as if it is getting away. Sharks do not have a bony skeleton like other fishes. They can literally turn their head and bite their tail, and their body is extremely strong. The best policy for any shark and particularly those of size is to keep them in the water and don’t bring them aboard the boat or try to handle them like other fishes. And, every shark has teeth, so be careful. If you’ve never hunted sharks, this is a good time to try. You’re going to be amazed at the battle they put up and how many times you have to follow them with the boat. Catching sharks can be exciting for anglers of any age, but if you take youngsters fishing, they’ll talk about catching it forever. Don’t pass up the opportunity to expand your fishing horizons.

ogfish – it’s an ugly name for a pretty fish. It’s also one of the most delicious species in the world. I know some seafood shops that store hogfish fillets behind the counter and bring it out only for special customers. I’ve had chefs beg me for hogfish once they found out I was into spearfishing. One chef wrote, “Not even for fresh broiled flounder could you pry my cold, dead hands off a hogfish fillet.” Some describe it as the perfect combination of flavor and texture because they are “sweeter than grouper, flakier than mahi, and as rich as scallops.” Their unique flavor is due to their diet of small crabs, shrimp and seashells, which translates into moist, white, tasty meat. Hogfish use their elongated snouts to root around in the sand for food, like a hog. Due to this tendency of searching with nose in the sand, it is very uncommon to catch them by hook and line, although it is possible to bait them with shrimp. Hogfish are sometimes thought of as nature’s gift to spearfishers, especially for beginners, because they are relatively abundant, relatively easy to spear, and such a prized catch. Hogfish can live up to 11 years, and they all start out as females. Upon reaching about 3 years and 14 inches, they transform into males with harem groups of females dominated by a larger male. Juveniles are pale pink and attain a deep dark band spanning from the snout to the first dorsal spine as they mature and turn into males. Maximum size is about 24 pounds. They can be found on rocky bottoms, ledges and reefs throughout the western Atlantic, from North Carolina and Bermuda, south to the Gulf of Mexico and the northern coast of South America. They are very common in Florida and the Bahamas and can be
found in shallow waters, ranging from 10-100 feet. Assuming you are in the right place to find them, here are some spearfishing tips: 1) Bag/size limits ensure a healthy stock and protect it from overfishing, so respect the local laws. 2) Look on reefs and especially on sand edges for bigger hogfish. 3) They are not difficult to spear, so take your time, be selective, and don’t take long shots. 4) They are abundant in the Bahamas. This is a good fish to practice your slinging/polespearing skills. Only take the shot if you are sure you can land it. 5) If you are not seeing any, try Sheri Daye displays a stirring up the bottom and make a world-record hogfish. sand cloud. Whale watching Season is here! By Mike Erickson – Tres Ninas Tours • www.tresninastours.com
Costa Rica is one of the Best locations in the World to Spot Humpback Whales
Most whale watching tours depart Drake bay on the Osa peninsula or the central Pacific coast from Ballena Park near Uvita, to the beach town of Jaco. The best dates are from December through April for the California Humpbacks and starting again in July when the Antarctic whales arrive to stay until about November. Because they spend so much time above the surface spy hopping, fin slapping, breaching and fluke flipping, Humpback whales are by far the most popular subjects for whale watching tours in Costa Rica. Of course the whales are wild and there is never any guarantee that you’ll see them, but your captains and guides will be in constant contact by radio with other boats all using GPS and will have the knowledge of the recent movements of the animals in the area.
C
osta Rican waters are home to dozens of marine mammal species. A common sight is spotted, or bottle nose dolphins escorting small craft on offshore fishing excursions. If you take fishing or snorkeling trips you’ll most likely spot the smaller cetaceans, but if you want to see the star of the show make sure you travel when they’re “wintering” in the warm tropical waters, and take a specialized humpback whale watching tour. Costa Rica has the distinction of more months with humpbacks in residence than anywhere else in the world. We have this distinction because there are two different types of whales that visit Costa Rica. The California Humpback Whales (Megaptera Novaeangliae) visit Costa Rica’s Central and Southern Pacific Coast from December through early April. On the other hand, the Antarctic Humpback Whales (Megaptera Novaeangliae) from the south can be seen in Costa Rican waters from Mid-July through Mid-November. The very best time and place is August through September along the Southern Pacific Coast from Manuel Antonio to the warm waters around the Osa Peninsula.
When you see these giants burst completely free of the water it’s hard to believe it can be the result of anything but sheer playfulness and joy. Even though the whales along the Pacific Coast represent only a few percent of the world population, they’re relatively easy to spot because they congregate close to shore. Pacific Humpbacks swim in pods of about a dozen in the known calving areas along the outer shore of the Osa Peninsula, in the protected waters of Marino Ballena National Park near Uvita, and the bay areas from Quepos to Jaco. Humpbacks definitely steal the show on any whale watching trip in Costa Rica but keep your eyes open because Costa Rican waters are home to Orcas, Pseudo Orcas, Sei, Beaked, Brydes and Pilot whales.

If you’re near the Central Pacific coast in early September you might even want to partake in the Festival of Whales (Festival De Ballenas) in Uvita. For 2018 the dates of the festival are 7,8,9,15,16 of September. www.festivaldeballenasydelfines.com. This event is fun-filled with lots of activities, including whale watching tours. If you can’t get to the festival at least get out with your local tour operators and enjoy this unique experience Costa Rican style. Whale watching is typically done from small outboard motor skiffs or larger inboard fishing boats. Tour prices range from around $50 per person for bare bones half-day trips to $150 per person for guided excursions that might include a private boat, snorkeling and lunch. Don’t ask or expect to swim with the whales because it is illegal for anyone but scientific researchers to swim with whales or dolphins in protected Costa Rican waters. Reliable tour operators understand and respect this law and visitors should too. Whale watching season is here so get out and experience the spectacle of these beautiful animals in this beautiful country.

A Conversation with Moises Mug The New Director of INCOPESCA President Carlos Alvarado recently appointed Moises Mug to head INCOPESCA, the governing body of Costa Rican fisheries. He understands Sport Fishing and its importance to the Costa Rican economy. By accepting the invitation to head of Costa Rica’s Fisheries he accepted the challenge to change the status-quo. I sat down with him recently to talk about his new position. The former Director of Science for FECOP has been at the helm since the first of June. Most known for his work on the tuna decree that moved tuna purse sein boats 45 miles off the coast and protected a total of over 200,000 sq kilometers of territorial water from purse sein activity. In 2017 Mug supplied the science to convince the government to reduce tuna licenses issued to foreign fleets from 43 to 13. By analyzing previous catch records by observers on tuna boats in 2017 alone, 25 metric tons of would be marlin bycatch was saved as well as dorado, wahoo, sharks, turtles, and marine mammals. Moises Mug, new President of INCOPESCA Coastal Angler Magazine - What are the major challenges for Costa Rica as far as our territorial waters? Moises Mug - To regain control of the resources in the ocean both the Pacific and Caribbean. The big problem is we lack the means to efficiently control illegal fishing, and to better understand the tuna resource, which is the biggest resource in our fisheries, and how to take advantage of our rich waters and make a balance between production, conservation, and tourism. The fishing Authority also needs a lot of work, focus on objectives and change the practices to follow a clear plan to reach a level sustainability in oceanic as well as coastal fisheries.
Coastal Angler Magazine - What should be the policy of the country for marine conservation and sustainability? Moises Mug - We have a Pacific Ocean which is very large and a smaller portion in the Caribbean in Costa Rican territory. There is an opportunity for Costa Rica to regain their rights to the wider Eastern Pacific Ocean resources, like the tuna capacity allowance the tuna commission gave us back in 2003. We need to define a specific policy to reduce poverty in the coast, to improve income of the fisheries by restoring fisheries, and improving the catches without overexploiting the resource, and to basically have prosperity of the ocean. In this prosperity, we can not only see marine resources as food resources. We have an important and amazing potential in tourism. Tourist fishing and sport fishing, but we need to find a balance of the fisheries so one fishery does not negatively impact the other, so reducing bycatch (incidental catch while targeting another species) is very important. Coastal Angler Magazine - How big of a problem is illegal fishing in Costa Rica? Moises Mug - It is a problem, a very big problem. We have been looking at data from satellite information, tuna commission catch data and comparing it with the number of landings and licenses. We believe illegal fishing takes 25 or 26 percent of all catches in Costa Rica. In addition to that, not all legal catches of tuna are being landed in Costa Rica. A big portion of purse sein vessels are landed elsewhere, so we are not taking full advantage of our resources, particularly tuna. Coastal Angler Magazine - Do you have plans on working with the ICT (Tourism Board) in the future? Moises Mug - Recently we had a meeting with the fishing sector, congressmen, and some of the Ministers sponsored by the Minister of the Presidency. We discussed the major lines for the policy in fisheries. Tourism is going to be a key asset to reduce poverty in this country. As we learned from the lessons like that of the shrimp trawling that laid off around 800 people in that industry. People are looking into alternative means in the ocean and one important one is tourism, sport fishing for sure to supply work to fishermen without jobs. Coastal Angler Magazine - Costa Rica was once considered “The Sailfish Capital of the World.” Will we ever see a day when that title returns? Moises Mug - We can work to reduce bycatch of sailfish for sure. One of the plans I have for INCOPESCA is to write down recovery plans for specific fisheries, coastal fisheries and oceanic fisheries. For sure sailfish is going to be one. The mortality though, of sailfish goes beyond Costa Rican fisheries. What is happening in other regions of their range, (Mexico to Ecuador in the Eastern Tropical Pacific) contributes to the population density in Costa Rica because

they are migratory. We must work in the whole range to be able to increase numbers. How to do this will be tricky, because we can work on rules and regulations in Costa Rica, but we need other countries as well. Guatemala and Panama will probably be allies in this effort, but other countries that do not have a clear sport fishing industry need to see the benefit of this.
FECOP project manager Henry Marin along with Adriana Chacon Cascante Phd from the University of Costa Rica will then analyze the results. The purpose of the study is to demonstrate to the government and tourism board the importance of tourist sport fishing to coastal communities. “Sport Fishing has surpassed coffee in contributing to the gross national product and we are excited to see the final result of this study,” said Marin. We should be able to share results with you in the next issue of Coastal Angler. A heartfelt thank you to all captains and mates who took their personal time to take the survey.

Greetings Anglers! Its been an incredible green season and we’re really looking forward to August, September and October. August is arguably the best month of the year in these waters with everything being caught in abundance. There’s also great deals on airfares and its a quiet month for charters . . . drop us a line for some last minute deals! At the time of writing this we are seeing some BIG mahi mahi (Dolphin Fish) and that will continue through the rest of the year. The roosterfish have been large and beautiful, with most of the action for them being just north of here. We generally see a bit of a slow down for them in October but for now they’re big, strong and plentiful. The excellent fisheries we’ve been seeing for sailfish, blue marlin, striped marlin and yellowfin tuna should continue through the next three months. Throughout June and into July the billfish have been surprisingly close in, with
many being caught within a couple miles from shore. The wahoo bite has started slow so I’m thinking we should be hooking up with some wahoo throughout the fall months. At Dream On we’ve been busy adding another Cabo Express 35 to the fleet. We shipped a beautiful one from Florida, through the canal to Costa Rica and by the time you’re reading this she’ll be here and operating. The Green Season here near the Northern Pacific Coast is a spectacular time of year to visit. Incredible fishing, beautiful scenery, milder temperatures and deals galore! oneless chicken breast stuffed with spinach, shrimp and cream cheese finished with a coconut sweet chili sauce. Well that’s a mouthful, not only to say, but when you bite into it, a flavor explosion. Using all local ingredients, combining and preparing to maximize their potential, each one of these ingredients gets prepared separately, then brought together to create this dish. SHRIMP PREP • Marinate the shrimp in garlic and Jimmy Ts Cajun spice (available at Jimmy Ts or online) • Grill the shrimp to fully cooked and remove the tail section. Chop into bite size pieces • Slice garlic and gather fresh spinach leaves • Sauté sliced garlic until golden brown, add fresh spinach leaves, salt and pepper. Splash with rice wine vinegar, enough to create steam, and cook the spinach. Remove from heat and squeeze dry when cool. CHICKEN PREP • Butterfly open your chicken breast and press so it is an even surface. Season generously with salt, pepper and Cajun.
• Add the spinach to cover the flesh of the chicken, not too much, just a layer. Add chopped cooked shrimp in a line down the middle, and finally a tablespoon of cream cheese spread to cover the shrimp and spinach. BAKE • Take a piece of aluminum foil about 8 inches in length and layout. Take the chicken breast and roll it up to ensure you’ve evenly distributed the stuffing. • Place the roll on the foil, then wrap the foil around the chicken and twist the ends tightly, securing the chicken inside • Place in a casserole dish and bake in a 350 degree oven for 30 minutes, until the chicken is cooked through. • Safely unwrap from the foil and add to a plate. SAUCE • While it is cooking, make the sauce. • Sauté sliced garlic, add half a can of coconut milk, a tablespoon of sweet chili sauce, then remove from heat. • Reheat when ready to serve the food. FLAMINGO REPORT By Captain Skeet Warren • “Bushwacker Sportfishing”
August through October bring some great fishing but the latter part of that time period also brings some heavier rains. We have excellent marlin fishing up here in the Guanacaste area throughout the summer. The Papagayo winds do not blow in the summer, so the seas are very calm to complement the great fishing. Since the winds do not blow offshore, the blue water pushes in very close and our normal runs are anywhere between 10 to 20 miles before we start fishing. August is normally our best month in the summertime for blue marlin. There are usually plenty of sailfish around too, as well as mahi mahi. There should be lots of tuna in the porpoise schools. September is very good also, with likewise conditions. As we get into October the rains get heavier and the conditions are more unpredictable. We can have some excellent fishing in October but I recommend people book their trip early in their stay, so that in the case of bad weather they can push their fishing date back in hopes of better conditions. Inshore fishing should be good because of the lack of wind, and because the clean water is being pushed inshore. The sailfish move inshore and we often catch them on half-day inshore trips this time of the year . . . as well as mahimahi and the ever present roosterfish, jack crevalle, snapper, rainbow runners and bonitos. Come on down and enjoy our calm seas and great fishing this time of the year.

A
s anticipated, the months of June and July have seen the billfish slowly trickling our way. We are still not seeing sails in double digits, but it is the norm for boats up and down the coast to have at least a few shots at marlin and sails when fishing a full day. It seems the tuna bite has improved as well. Almost every trip the boats fishing out of Carrillo and Garza are bringing home some nice tuna filets for dinner. After a long hiatus, the spotted dolphin are being seen again, together with bait, birds, and yellowfin a bit larger than we find with the spinners.

s the water has slowly turned from clear to greener inshore, the bigger bait like green runners have turned up in big numbers. This has made the inshore fishing easier and we have had good days with multiple roosterfish, jacks and smaller snappers. Jigging is producing good fish while popping is still slow. As the rainy season continues, bait should stay available and the fishing should pick up an extra notch as well. Roosterfish will be even more prominent followed by jacks, mackerel snappers and dorado.

The Fishing of Machaca with Surface Lures By Alberto Gutierrez Acuña Pura Pesca Costa Rica - Fishing Tackle Shop
I
n Costa Rica we have many rivers, and in most we find the fish called machaca. Our country has two slopes (Pacific and Atlantic). In each of these slopes we have two different species of machaca, the brycon behreae (pacific) and the brycon guatemalensis (Atlantic). This is hard to believe though, as the impact of human beings, by means of Lake Arenal and its pipelines for the generation of electricity, causes the crushing of the Atlantic invading the rivers of the northern Pacific. This fish feeds on other fish, reptiles, insects, flowers and fruits, which makes fishing with surface lures very exciting for fishermen. Throughout the year we find different fruits, flowers and insects that fall into the river. Machaca is a predatory fish with very sharp teeth and quite fast. At the moment we get a bite the machaca jumps quick, and for its size it has a lot of strength. There are records of machaca up to 6 kilograms, but the All Tackle records registered with the IGFA are: Machaca del Pacifico 2.28 kg by Luis Diego Montero and Machaca del Atlántico 4.32 kg by Ms. Barbara fields. While it is true the machaca can be fished with lures of all kinds, deep and half way to the bottom, using spinners, spoons, and crankbaits, most fishermen choose surface lures. Personally I like to see when they catch the lure . . . it’s more exciting. For this fishing we have to be very good casters. We have to put the lure under the tree where fruit or flowers are falling. Or along structures in the river, like dead trees and rocks inside the river or very close to the shore, where machaca are waiting to ambush prey. It is also good to cast towards the exits of small affluent rivers. For this fishing we have to look for the coolest hours of the day and in low light, so we have to take advantage of the morning and sunset. During the normal
day we have to identify the trees that are throwing fruits and flowers and look for shadows of trees or walls where the machacas are protected from the sun. in the attached image I show you which are the most efficient lures to fish on the surface. All are very good and the color or choice depends on the fisherman’s taste and what resembles what is falling into the river at that time. The most innovative is the whopper plopper, which is a new lure of 9 cm that is creating quite a stir . . . it became famous in Costa Rica for its good results. Most of these lures that I show you have to reel slow and continuous except for the popper that is hit with small pulls and at the discretion of the fisherman, where he can work fast or slow. The greatest effectiveness of these lures is in the accuracy of the casting. If you want to fish for the machaca I recommend the Sarapiqui River and its tributaries, in the area of Cañas and Bagaces, the Tenorio River and its tributaries in the Upala area, and the famous Niño River. These three rivers can be fished from the shore or by boat.

LOS SUENOS OFFSHORE REPORT By Captain Daniel Espinosa • Maverick Sport Fishing
E
xperienced Captains fishing the water off Los Suenos are reporting a wide variety of catch. Blue marlin, black marlin, and a few striped marlin have been reported as usual as we head into August and September. As if a complete plate of Pacific marlin species is not enough, yellowfin tuna, mahi, rooster and a variety of bottom fish are being caught by Los Suenos anglers both inshore and offshore. It is always a guessing game as to what exactly things will look like when the magazine is actually distributed, we are confident that this should be a good fall season as we get further into the Green Season. We keep talking about the offshore seamounts, but that is because this time of year presents an opportunity found in few places on earth for Pacific blue marlin. The numbers seen are unprecedented, and double digit overnight trips are very common. Check this one off your bucket list. The fish are usually between 250 and 400 lbs with much larger fish being caught occasionally. This year our boats have produced two verified short bill spear fish which are commonly confused with small striped marlin. Add sailfish, and I predict someday a boat will land five species of billfish on one trip. We had a couple of Royal Slams this year (four species of billfish), and several Grand Slams (three species) among our boats. One long time fisherwoman got two Grand Slams in two days just offshore Los Suenos. We anticipate decent mixed bags of inshore fish which will make a very tasty “carry-in” which several local restaurants will prepare as part of the “You hook them, we cook them” program. One of the bright spots is the return of mahi in numbers not recently seen. I have spoken to several anglers recently that told me they had to move the boat to a different location because there was no way to avoid hooking one after the other. Some of these fish have been very nice size in the 60 to 70 lb range. I expect that the “26 reef ” will continue to produce black marlin which have been seen is good numbers this year. This is also a great spot to go for a big wahoo as well as numbers of sailfish. From Los Suenos, locations such as Cabo Blanco for marlin, and the Nicoya Peninsula for great inshore trips is just a boat ride away. If you plan a trip, the good news is that cloud cover cuts down on the heat and sun exposure. The less good news is that it could well rain. Not to worry, you will dry off. Current, up to date fishing information is always available on the dock, or at the Maverick Sportfishing Center in Los Suenos. Most Captains and crew are more than happy to report of the fishing that they are finding on a day to day basis. A last observation this time of year is that boat availability is not a problem.

LOS SUENOS INSHORE REPORT By Captain Carlos Arguedas • Wing Man
The past few month at Los Suenos has seen great rooster fishing in the area. Some days of great action, releasing up to 10 - 11 roosters in one day with fish from medium size up to ones 65 inches long, like the one catch for Jennalee Matyas and Matt Douglas. It is also making inshore fishing great and very enjoyable around the rocks for families like Mr. Tramontano and daughters, and some other families than have been fishing with us here at Los Suenos Resort and Marina. The cuberas also keep biting at the reef. The mullet snappers are pretty much gone, making the reef pretty much on again, off again, with some really good days and some slow days in between. Nice yellowfin tuna for Mr. Kelvin and friends that visited our resort
Nice cubera 45 lbs. plus caught by Tackle Up fishing team, showing his intense bright red. This makes them one of the most beautiful fish on the reef and the one that puts up an intense battle, making him the king of the area. The month of June we have been blessed with a great wahoo bite and small mahi mahi by the hundreds with some of them showing up to 40 lbs. Tuna fishing also keeps going crazy, with big schools fairly close to shore. We’re catching yellowfin tunas up to 90 to100 lbs. almost every day. Some silk snappers also starting to show up as well on the deep drop. With plenty of great fishing in the inshore lately, we’re able to say “No Chicken Tonight” every day. Great trip rooster fishing for Tony Willis who has been here a few times. Tony and his friends caught 11 roosters with a variety of sizes from small ones to the biggest that was close to 50 lbs., making this trip the best of all in his own words.

June & July produced some great offshore fishing and there was some great species variety caught by the Quepos fleet. There were some very nice sized blue and black marlin released, with reports of several fish in the 400-500 pound range. Marlin, sailfish, tuna, dorado, wahoo, snapper & grouper made up most of the offshore catches. The wahoo bite continues to be good over the offshore reefs. There was a very good sailfish bite on occasions, with reports of 20+ sailfish days by some boats during June. Simply incredible fishing for this time of year! August will continue to hold some good opportunities for sailfish and blue marlin for those anglers looking for a bucket list billfish. There are lots of dorado in the 5-15 pound range being caught offshore and as we move into September and October we expect a flood of larger dorado to work their way up the coastline. If last year was anything to go by, we should get some incredible dorado fishing by then, just in time for the Marina Pez Vela’s 1st ever Dorado Derby which takes place in November! Inshore there have been some HUGE roosterfish & snook caught out of Quepos recently. There have been lots of roosterfish caught in the 20-40 pound range, however there have been several huge roosters around 80 pounds caught in recent weeks. In addition to roosterfish, snappers, jacks, mackerel, snook, tripletail and corvina can be caught while slow trolling live baits at our
rocks, island or rivermouth locations. Capt Roy Zapata has done it again with a HUGE snook of 51 pounds, which is a potential IGFA ladies world record for 20 pound line class. There really is no better place on the planet to catch a large snook than Quepos. DRAKE BAY REPORT By Captain Willy Atencio

reetings from the beautiful and uncrowded waters of Drake Bay, Cano Island and the Osa Peninsula. We are pleased to announce that we were recently ranked the #1 tour in Drake Bay on Trip Advisor. As we enter the final three months of the “Green Season” the fishing remains better than usual for this time of year. There are plenty of wahoo and small to midsized tuna near shore, as well as a few mahi. Offshore for the next few months will be largely weather dependent as this time of year can be unpredictable. On good days expect a good tuna bite with yellowfin and big eye destroying your popper, lure, or my favorite, live bait. With our new Garmin Satellite Technology we are having a lot of success finding the huge schools of tuna, typically 25-40 miles from Drake Bay. Anglers can also expect a few sailfish and blue or black marlin to come busting through the spread. Very lucky anglers occasionally find a large floating log or pallet and can typically load the fish box pretty quickly with mahi. Anglers need to be ready when this occurs because the action is fast and furious. Inshore, we are blessed with awesome roosterfishing year round. For those fisherman primarily looking for a delicious dinner the grouper and snapper bite is also a year round favorite. As we do every year, we will close for the month of October. The boats will be hauled out of the water and all maintenance, hull painting and updates will be performed. November 1st the boats will be in perfect shape and we will be ready to start another fantastic high season. Remember if you are planning a trip December – April we suggest you make your fishing reservations as soon as possible so you can experience an incredible day on the water. O
ffshore the Osa Peninsula, sailfish have been a little spotty but tuna, dorado, and marlin have kept angler’s lines tight. Yellowfin tuna have been an almost daily occurrence below pods of spinner dolphin. After being nearly non-existent the last few seasons, dorado have been around in good numbers all year. Marlin numbers have really increased since the tuna boats have been pushed offshore, leaving lots of tuna and dorado for them to gulp down. Not only are the anglers venturing out to the FADs doing well, but good numbers of marlin are being taken closer to shore. Inshore, the rainy season always means bigger roosterfish as the 40 lb. plus fish move in to haunt the surf and inshore rock piles. Snapper have been consistent, mostly dinner size, and jacks and African pompano have been biting well. Pargo seda, or as some call them, Pacific red snapper, have moved onto reefs in the 300-foot range and have been taken with a few grouper, tilefish, and an occasional barrelfish. German Bustos has been head captain at Crocodile Bay Resort for the last dozen years after working on prestigious sportfishing boats all throughout Central America for nearly 20 years. He is one of the most requested captains at Crocodile Bay.

Bassmaster Ranks Rayburn The Best Bass Lake In The Country B.A.S.S. Photo
A
fter three years hovering in the Top 5 of Bassmaster Magazine’s 100 Best Bass Lakes rankings, Texas’ Sam Rayburn Reservoir finally took the crown as the best bass lake in the nation for 2018. Consistent production of heavy five-fish tournament limits and the potential for giant bass made this 114,500-acre reservoir northeast of Houston tops in the country this year. Rayburn started showing out in 2015, when it climbed to fifth in the rankings. In 2016 it jumped to fourth. And last year, Rayburn was the bridesmaid, sitting in second place. But, Rayburn is a bridesmaid no more, and for the first time captures the title. “Although there were some pretty spectacular numbers being produced from other lakes this year, Rayburn was a clear No. 1,” said James Hall, editor of Bassmaster Magazine. “While some lakes were boasting of a single 30-pound, five-bass limit being caught, Rayburn was spitting them out in rapid succession. And to top it off, a 40.28-pound limit was recorded in June.”
Countless limits of solid fish aren’t the only thing special about this lake. “When it comes to double-digit bass, Rayburn also seems to top the list this year,” Hall continued. “Three 10-pounders were weighed in during a one-day February derby. Plus, a 12.05 and a 13.06 were landed here in March. The lake is simply on fire right now.” The process to create the rankings takes about three months to complete. Data is received from state fisheries agencies across the U.S. This is coupled with catch data collected from dozens of tournament organizations from the past 12 months. After the numbers are crunched, a panel from the bass fishing industry debates the strength of the lakes to settle on the final rankings. The rankings identify the Top 10 lakes in the nation regardless of location, as well as the Top 25 lakes in four geographical divisions. “By dividing the Top 100 into four regions, anglers have perspective on fisheries nearby,” Hall explained. Tennessee’s Chickamauga Lake, which took the No. 2 slot this year, made a strong argument for No. 1, as it also produced 40-plus-pound limits this spring, two of them exceeding 42 pounds. Although this 36,240-acre fishery hasn’t produced quite as many big fish as Rayburn, there were two bass over 10 pounds recorded since February. The biggest weighed 11.21 pounds. California’s Clear Lake landed the No. 3 position on the strength of its production of big largemouth. Michigan’s Lake St. Clair climbed from ninth last year to the fourth in 2018, while Minnesota’s Mille Lacs Lake (last years’ No. 1 fishery) fell to No. 5. The remainder of the nation’s Top 10 are: sixth, Santee Cooper lakes (Marion/Moultrie), South Carolina; seventh, Diamond Valley Lake, California.; eighth, Thousand Islands (St. Lawrence River), New York; ninth, Lake Guntersville, Alabama; 10th, Falcon Lake, Texas. When it comes to bragging rights for the state with the most lakes to make the Top 100 list, Texas wins with 12. BEAT THE HEAT WITH NIGHT FISHING
BRANDON LESTER he dog days have arrived, and the lake is crowded with recreational boat traffic. The best fishing to be had during summer is after the sun goes

down. Around my home in Tennessee, most all of our club-level tournaments go to nighttime hours this time of year. Let’s talk about why the nighttime bite is so good, what to look for and baits that work well at night. First and foremost, if you’ve never spent a night out cruising your local lake, I think you’ll find it is the most quiet and peaceful fishing you will ever do. It’s like the whole world is asleep, and you have free rein of the lake. Baitfish often become more active at night, and the water cools just enough to get fish to come to the shallows and feed. Bass are a lot like us in that 100-degree temperatures make them want to find somewhere cool to just hang out. Their feeding windows become shorter this time of year, and mostly occur after dark. When looking for night fishing hotspots, think high percentage areas where you know bass live and feed. Keep in mind that they can’t see as well at night, so they must rely on their lateral lines to find food. Start at lighted boat docks, boat ramps, brushpiles

Also, don’t be afraid to fish places you wouldn’t dare fish during the day because of too much boat traffic, such as boat ramps and marinas. At night, when these places calm down, fish pull up and feed around them. You don’t need any specific gear for night fishing if you can get used to the fact that you can’t see your line. Many night fishermen use the exact same gear at night as they do during the day. Around my home lake, we fish clear blue fluorescent line at night and attach a black light to the side of the boat to see the line with ease. It helps. There’s nothing more fun than watching that line jump in the black light and knowing your bait just got hammered. Just about any bait that will catch a bass in the day will also catch one at night. The No. 1 key is to slow down. A fish’s strike zone shrinks at night because they can’t see as well. Slowing down helps put the odds in your favor. Some of my favorite baits are Texas-rigged worms (fished on an MHX NEPS 86HF), from small straight tail worms like the X-Xone Fat Finesse Worm all the way up to 11- and 12-inch worms, and even creature baits. Another great option at night is a spinnerbait. I usually throw a 3/8-ounce Kinkee Baits spinnerbait (fished on an MHX NEPS 86MHF) with a single No. 5 Colorado blade in black and blue color. The thin wire of this bait really lets it thump.

Fish for Hungry Trout at Hunger Games Site in Western North Carolina
D
uPont State Recreational Forest in the Blue Ridge Mountains near Hendersonville, North Carolina, provides not only a scenic setting for trout fishing, but also a unique one. The delayed harvest waters of Little River flow through undisturbed mountains and over several notable waterfalls. Those same waters were immortalized on Hollywood’s silver screen as the backdrop for the exploits of Katniss Everdeen in the original Hunger Games movie. Movie buffs who wet a line on Little River in the DuPont Forest will no doubt recognize Triple Falls, which played a prominent role in multiple scenes in the movie. But there is good news for anglers: spending time on this stretch of Little River does not involve the life or death struggle it did in Hunger Games. Everyone is expected to come out alive. Many anglers also come out happy as this 1.8-mile stretch of Little River is stocked annually with a combination of 7,750 brook, rainbow and brown trout. North Carolina Wildlife regulations require a valid fishing license and the delayed harvest designation means it is single-hook artificial lures only with no harvesting of fish from Oct. 1 through the
first Friday in June. Starting the first Saturday in June and continuing through Sept. 30, there are no bait restrictions and a creel limit of seven trout per day with no minimum length on trout harvested. Because DuPont is a state recreational forest, there is ample parking in both the Hooker Falls Access Area and the High Falls Access Areas, with wide, easy-to-navigate trails to many of the key fishing spots. One downside to fishing this stretch of Little River is the popularity of the trails and waterfalls with those who do not fish. Expect plenty of hikers and sightseers, especially on nice weekends. And when the fishing is done, Hendersonville provides plenty of options for outdoor exploring, listening to live music, sipping craft beverages and enjoying great meals. The town’s main street has a serpentine shape surrounded by pedestrian-friendly sidewalks punctuated by planting beds, park benches and outdoor dining. The abundance of orchards makes Henderson County an ideal location for hard cider fans. Three cideries offer tasting rooms: Flat Rock Ciderworks on Main Street, Bold Rock Hard Cider in Mills River and Appalachian Ridge Artisan Ciders in a 1940s-era barn-turned-cidery. Another craft beverage experience is the East Coast location of Sierra Nevada Brewery, considered the Taj Mahal of craft breweries in the eastern U.S.

“ Rainy Season ” Action Rages Out Of Playa Garza, Costa Rica By Craig Sutton
T
he five-boat FishingNosara team logged 78 trips last month, and I’m stoked to announce that the marlin are here in northern Costa Rica, as our “second high season” is in full effect. The 32-foot Harvester led the charge for our Playa Garza-based fleet, with Capt. Alex going on a crazy run of marlin and sailfish releases over four days between June 9 and June 12. Jeff Broome scored the fish of a lifetime with Capt. Alex on June 10 with a black marlin weighing well over 450 pounds. The next day, Broome posted the trip of the year, to date. First off was a true double sailfish release. After the safe release of both fish, they added a third sailfish for good measure. Another monster came calling, as the Harvester reported another massive marlin release, the second
in two days. It was amazing work by Capt. Alex, Mate Wilson, and this group of Florida anglers. Here’s what Broome had to say: “Just wanted to say an enthusiastic THANK YOU for the incredible trip we had thanks to your team. In three days, we got three Marlin—two blues and a massive black—three sailfish, a huge dorado and a good deal more tuna and mahi! “Thanks to Capt. Alex and his hard-working deckhand Wilson, I was able to cross marlin off my bucket list of fish to catch. Definitely a dream for me, and I know I speak for all the guys in our group that it was definitely the fishing trip of a lifetime! “You could tell how passionate Alex was about fishing. His favorite thing to say after we brought in a catch was, ‘Let’s get another one!’” “Pura Vida!”-Jeff Broome The next day, Capt. Alex and FishingNosara Hall of Famer Chuck Harris scored another marlin release. That’s four monsters in four days. It was a truly legendary run for the Harvester. Meanwhile, Lila Weirich brought a big group of folks from Texas down in early June, so many that they need both the 32-foot Wanderer and Discoverer to hold them all. In addition to having a big time all week, these Lone Star anglers scored some fillets big as Texas. Monster mahi-mahi were abundant, and meaty yellowfin tunas added variety to the fillet bag With all the other fishing operations in Costa Rica on the hill for the summer, we have attracted adventurous anglers from all over the Pacific Coast, as well. Scott Burke drove in three hours from Tamarindo at 3 a.m., fished a full day, and went back the same day. The odyssey proved worthwhile, as the group reported three great sailfish releases. Shea Ralph is another journeyman angler who came from Jaco to Nosara, covering 140 miles on land in order to reach Costa Rica’s closest bluewater. They hooked up multiple sailfish and proved once again that the fish eat every day, even during the so-called “rainy season.”

Teen Breaks Wyoming Green Sunfish Record

ust one more cast, please,” Chris Castleman, 14, pleaded several times the evening of June 7. On the very last of the “just one more” casts, Chris hooked a new Wyoming state record green sunfish on a worm and bobber. He and his dad, Allen, knew the fish was much bigger than the panfish they’d been catching that evening at Bryan Stock Trail Pond in Casper. The next morning, the fish weighed 1-pound, 4-ounces on certified scales. It measured 12.25 inches long with an 11-inch girth. It was officially identified as a green sunfish by Fisheries Supervisor Matt Hahn, the state record form was filled out and a new record was on the books. The fish resoundingly beat the former state record caught at the Lovell Ponds in July 2010 by nearly 6 ounces. The world record weighed 2 pound, 2 ounces and was caught in Stockton Lake near Springfield, Missouri in June 1971. “This was a one in a thousand, maybe even one in 10,000 fish,” Hahn said about the frequency of a fish this size in the Wyoming green sunfish population. The green sunfish is native to middle America from the Great Lakes to Texas and as far west as Nebraska. It was introduced to Wyoming primarily as forage for bass, but also because it generally cooperates with warm-water anglers.
