anuary marks a shi! in fishing targets, with a focus on species ideal for winter meals. This month traditionally finds anglers pursuing seabass and other nearshore fish, following a tradition passed down from my dad, who favored seabass and flounder for their taste and suitability for freezing. Seabass are not only delicious but also keep well in the freezer, providing a reliable food source throughout the colder months. Flounder, prized for its flavor, remains a favorite for many. While seeking black seabass close to shore, anglers o!en encounter gag grouper, grey trout, and flounder. However, many of these species have strict creel limits, with retention o!en prohibited in regions like North Carolina. To avoid catching undersized or barely legal seabass, using larger bait on a jig is recommended. Live pinfish—ideally the size of a tennis ball or baseball—make exceptional bait. If you have access to a marina’s fish cleaning table, pay attention to discarded scraps, as these can help attract

pinfish. Setting a pinfish trap or using finely cut scraps to chum and cast net for pinfish are effective methods for securing live bait. This technique is not only excellent for larger seabass but also irresistible to gag grouper. The same structures that attract seabass also hold baitfish such as cigar minnows, sardines, and small snapper. When anchored or spot-locked over structure, keeping a Sabiki rig ready can be invaluable. Keep one person in the boat constantly on the Sabiki providing live baits for the rest of the boat. This will certainly pay dividends. Be mindful of state and federal regulations of what you can and cannot keep, but this tactic catches everything on the reef without exception. The thing I like about pinfish is everything down there will give a live sardine and a live cigar minnow a fatal attack, but only the critters with a large enough mouth and a bold nature will go a!er pinfish or small snapper. The goal is not to catch a hundred fish, but to land a dozen high-quality bites—those worth taking home for dinner. Anywhere south and north of North Carolina, flounder is still on the menu for dinner, and a jig paired with a live cigar minnow is the ultimate flounder catching instrument. Don’t say I didn’t tell you so, but if you take light tackle to some of these nearshore seabass holes, you will lose fish to powerful gags. For nearshore flounder and grouper, opt for heavier tackle—a grouper stick equipped with a four-ounce jig and live cigar minnows or sardines. The other byproduct of this style fishing will be large drum, which tend to congregate on nearshore structure. Don’t be surprised to catch seabass, flounder, gags, and drum in the same spot. Also don’t hesitate to take chunks of crab or sand fleas for sheepshead. he flat was silent. No birds. No bait popping. Only the crunch of frost under my boots and the faint ripple of tide against the shoreline. Every sensible voice in my PHO TO COURT ESY OF KN head said the fish wouldn’t OCKIN TA IL LURES® feed. Then the line jumped—just once— and everything changed. For those who chase speckled trout of larger proportions, one truth becomes painfully clear: big winter trout do not give themselves up easily. Cold water slows their metabolism, feeding windows shrink, and mistakes multiply. Most anglers default to the winter mantra—slow everything down. It’s solid advice… but it isn’t the whole story. Winter trophy trout live in a world of conserving energy. They don’t want to chase far, but they will react violently to the right movement at the right moment. That’s where two tools come together: erratic presentation and precise timing. Let’s start with timing. Like many anglers, I once dismissed solunar tables as folklore. As a kid, I’d scan the fish symbols on the calendar before every trip. More fish meant higher hopes. Fewer fish meant lower expectations. Over time, I saw no real correlation and abandoned the idea. But as I matured into a better saltwater angler—and began truly hunting trophy trout—I returned to solunar tables, this time paired with tides and conditions. The difference was undeniable. These tables aren’t magic. They won’t put fish where they don’t exist. But if you are on fish, they o!en reveal when those fish are most willing to feed. Many anglers assume the “major” bite is always better than the “minor.” Not true. The difference is duration, not intensity. The major typically lasts about two hours, the minor closer to ninety minutes. Either can be explosive. One rule I never break: don’t relocate during a feeding window. On a recent trip, I was grinding through a slow morning and nearly moved on. I checked the time—ten minutes before the bite. I stayed. What followed was an aggressive feed that turned a dead stretch into a trophy-class opportunity. Big trout don’t feed o!en. When they do, you’d better be ready. That brings us to presentation. In winter, I rely on suspending and slow-sinking lures with erratic, nervous action. When I say “slow,” I mean forward movement—not motion. With a so!, whippy rod, I shake the lure in place with almost no forward travel, then let it pause. Shake. Pause. Repeat. This technique works best with braided line, which transmits every movement without stretch. Winter trout may be cold—but when timing and motion align, they don’t just bite… they attack. The strike comes without warning. No tap. No thump. Just sudden, heavy weight and the slow, head-shaking surge of a true gator. In that moment, frozen fingers, long quiet hours, and doubt all vanish. There is only tension in the line and the knowledge that patience, timing, and the right dance delivered the fish you came for. And that’s why we brave the winter. Capt. Pro Tips for Inshore Fishing This Winter

Pro Tip #1 - Find warmer water. Just a couple of degrees can make all the difference between catching and not catching fish during the cold months. Focus on the southern facing shorelines that receive the most hours of sunlight each day. Conversely, avoid fishing shady spots. Start fishing later in the day to allow the sun’s power to heat the water. An especially good time to fish is when low tide coincides with the middle of the day. Shallow water is easier to heat up and it concentrates the fish. If you are fishing during the higher parts of the tide, then you should look for shallow flats that are adjacent to deeper water (8 to 10 ft). L SAFE PASSAGE The Case for a Dependable Jupiter Inlet By Mark Ambert
ocals and visitors alike gravitate toward the beautiful turquoise waterways of northern Palm Beach County. Jupiter Inlet is both historic and critical to the health and wellbeing of this vibrant community. The Jupiter Inlet District (JID) was created in 1921 to keep the passage open between these waterways and the Atlantic. It has long maintained the channel, dredging shifting sands and preserving safe passage. Still, as recent efforts led by Christopher Ball make clear, the inlet can be a treacherous gauntlet. In October 2025, Ball launched an online petition titled “Make Jupiter Inlet Safe and Navigable.” That petition argues for a “dependable, marked inlet approach” with a minimum depth of 12 feet and proper channel markers — a vision meant to reflect the community’s growing demand for predictability and safety. Ball’s appeal isn’t just a boater’s wish list — it’s grounded in hard history.
FROM NATURAL WATERWAY TO ENGINEERED PASSAGE
A BRIEF HISTORY The inlet has been known since at least 1671, when early European maps charted a natural passage linking the Loxahatchee, Lake Worth Creek, and the Jupiter Sound portion of the Indian River Lagoon to the Atlantic Ocean. Yet by the late 19th century, as coastal development and changes to nearby inlets shifted hydrodynamics, the inlet began to shoal frequently — rendering it unreliable for regular navigation. In response, 1922 marked a turning point. Engineers approved a man-made channel, dredged and stabilized with a pair of stone jetties — the North and South jetties, each over 300 feet long, designed to focus flows and prevent the inlet from migrating. Still, despite the structural interventions, maintenance dredging has remained a near-annual necessity. Sediment continues to migrate, threatening to choke the inlet and block safe boat passage. Recent reports underscore the persistent danger. In 2020-2021, JID records show dredging extracted over 123,000 cubic yards of material — far above the long-term average of about 64,000, indicating unusually heavy shoaling. Christopher Ball’s petition calls for two changes: first, a guaranteed navigable depth of 12 feet, and second, a properly marked channel. If implemented, these measures would bring the inlet more in-line with the expectations of boaters, locals, and visitors alike — and reflect the seriousness with which JID takes its mandate.
WHY IT MATTERS TO JUPITER
While I have a personal interest as an avid boater and angler, the inlet isn’t just a shortcut to the sea. It’s part of the ecological and economic lifeblood of the region. The inlet provides critical habitat, recreational opportunities, and support to shoreline stability through sand bypass and beach nourishment programs. Moreover, stability at the inlet protects not only boaters, but fragile ecosystems — including seagrass beds, oyster bars, and mangroves that rely on balanced sediment flow and careful environmental management. The petition proposed by Ball is therefore not just a narrow demand from boaters. It’s part of a broader vision: an inlet that’s safe, stable, environmentally sound, and reliable. The early response from the JID is encouraging. As of the November 2025 board meeting, the District authorized its engineer to draft a plan outlining the major elements needed to achieve a “dependable marked inlet approach”. That means the voice of the community - boaters, anglers, and residents is being heard. If the petition hits or exceeds its 500-signature goal, it could help sway entities with greater power (including the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers) to step in. In the end, safeguarding Jupiter Inlet becomes more than a matter of convenience. It becomes about preserving a legacy of maritime heritage, ecological balance, and public safety. key when kite fishing; you should target your efforts between 80-250 feet of water for sailfish until you determine the best depth for that day. If the seas are fairly calm this month, try to explore further offshore to find the occasional dolphin or wahoo. While traveling to and from your fishing grounds you should be on the lookout for cobia swimming in the shallows close to the beach. Also, along the beaches; delicious pompano, bluefish, and Spanish mackerel will be plentiful. Spanish mackerel put up a hard fight on light tackle and are great table fare, with fish 5-7lbs not uncommon. You can target Spanish mackerel from a boat by trolling depths of 1025 feet and casting colorful jigs, spoons, or swimming plugs along the beach. For land-based anglers; The Juno Pier, Lake Worth Pier, and rock piles off Boynton Inlet should produce a good bite. For those anglers that love to bottom fish, set up your drifts in depths of 60-120 feet near wrecks and reefs. Drift your baits using a triple hook rig with a dead sardine or a chicken rig with a sinker; both should yield muttons, yellowtail, mangrove snapper, and kingfish. Until next time, keep on catchin’!

The sailfish sector aka ‘Sailfish Alley’ of the Gulf Stream is at its prime this month. The sailfish bite best when a chilly north wind starts howling, kicking up the seas as it plows head-on into the Gulf Stream and stacking up the bait. A general rule of thumb to remember, the sailfish bite improves the first few days following a cold front. Anglers should look for pods of bait on their depth finder, water change, a clean water edge, or a temperature break, and that will lead you to the fish. A majority of anglers fishing offshore this month are fishing sailfish tournaments and they will be deploying kites for kite fishing, allowing anglers to have the best bait presentation possible. TIP: You should consider purchasing a drift anchor if you have a center console. A drift anchor will help you stay in the depth you are fishing longer, especially when the winds are howling and pushing your vessel out of the strike zone. Historically, productive areas for sailfish range from The Jupiter Ledge to the waters in front of The Breakers and The Ritz Carlton, down to Boynton’s water tower, the ‘Martini Glass’. Depth is

These razor-toothed torpedoes show up fast, hit hard, and don’t forgive many mistakes. After 20 years offshore fishing from Palm Beach, The Florida Keys, and Bahamas, I’ve dialed in a few methods that consistently put ‘hoos in the box — even on tough days. 1. PLANERS: THE MOST UNDERRATED WAHOO WEAPON A planer is still one of the most reliable tools we have for wahoo fishing along the Florida coast. While high-speed trolling gets the attention, a properly set planer line running deep at 6–8 knots flat-out produces. • #4 and #6 planers get baits into the strike zone. • Wahoo love sitting deeper in the column, especially when the sun gets high. • Keep the drag tight enough to hold the planer but loose enough to rip free on a strike.
TIP: Add a Knot for Nothing Candy Witch or Crusher for flash without killing the bait’s natural action. 3. STEALTH MATTERS: LIGHTER MONOFILAMENT OR FLOUROCARBON WINS BITES Wahoo have excellent eyesight, and in our clear South Florida water they can be line-shy. While wire is still necessary at times for teeth protection, using mono or flouro can make a big difference. •
Use lighter mono leaders or fluorocarbon when you can get away with it. • Keep terminal connections clean and minimal. • Slim down skirts on high-visibility days. You’re essentially trying to present something fast and natural without unnecessary hardware — stealth gets hit more often. 4. WORK THE CONTOURS & STRUCTURE In Southeast Florida, wahoo love edges and transitions: • • •
The 100-300’ range Ledges, wrecks, and current breaks Early morning tide changes If you mark bait or see a temperature break, drag a planer line through it — don’t overthink it. 5. SPEED MATTERS, BUT IT’S NOT EVERYTHING
2. PROVEN BAITS: BONITA STRIPS, BALLYHOO, AND MULLET You can experiment with all the rubber or plastic strips that you want, but year after year, these three natural baits keep outperforming. • • •
BONITA STRIPS – the absolute workhorse. Durable, oily, and deadly on a planer. BALLYHOO – clean swimming and natural presentation. Great for both surface and deep lines. MULLET – underrated for wahoo but extremely effective, especially with a little color in front.

Slow-trolling with live bait (1-2 knots) Mid-speed with natural baits (6-12 knots) High-speed with heavy lures (14-18 knots) But, most consistent day-in, day-out bites still come from natural baits on a planer in our region. ope everyone had a fun holiday season and a great start to your new year! I like suggest ideas for exploring Florida’s natural environments in this column, and this month, I’d like to also suggest experiencing Florida’s natural areas as a volunteer. Florida’s population is closing in on 25 million people, with many choosing to live here because of our natural beauty and relaxed lifestyle. From ocean to gulf, rivers, bays, and waterways, wetlands to forests, and freshwater to saltwater, Florida has a little something for everyone! Although it’s sometimes easy to forget, there’s still a huge amount of land that has been set aside for the public to enjoy as natural areas. The Everglades, Big Cypress, and Biscayne National Park are massive, federally managed areas that gets lots of visitors and lots of attention here in South Florida. In Palm Beach County, there are sizable state and locally managed areas, like Corbett WMA, Winding Waters Preserve, MacArthur Beach State Park, and Riverbend Park that also receive lots of attention and visitation.

But there are also a huge number of smaller areas - places you may drive past by car or by boat and have never heard of or visited. Places like Pond Hawk Natural Area, Loxahatchee Slough, Delaware Scrub, Frenchman’s Forest, Tarpon Cove, and Snook Islands. These special spots showcase various aspects of Florida’s natural environments and are open for the public’s use and enjoyment. Unfortunately, not everyone visiting our natural areas respects the old adage “leave only footprints behind”. It’s disheartening to find trash and discarded items, especially in remote areas. But it happens all the time. That’s why almost every single natural area in Florida can benefit from motivated and organized volunteers. Especially at smaller, unstaffed areas! There are dozens of volunteer opportunities available each month. And for those of you who have high school age students in your life, organized group activities almost always count toward community service hours for graduation! So what opportunities are available? Just google “volunteer at ________ natural area” to see. • be a hiking trail steward • help remove invasive exotic plants from wooded areas • be a tour guide or help raise funds for your favorite nature center • plant mangroves or create new oyster reefs as part of a habitat restoration project * survey for birds, fish, and other creatures as part of an annual migration study • paddle waterways each week to collect water quality data • help take care of orphaned and injured wild animals • pick up trash and debris from beaches and shorelines • join a sea turtle survey or rescue team There’s an incredible variety of options out there, and I hope you and your family will consider volunteering a few hours of your time this year! January targets should be pompano, Spanish mackerel, sheepshead, and bluefish. Fishing the beach and the Intracoastal near inlets will be your best bet. The cold fronts will push more fish into the river and Intracoastal. Try fishing for pompano along channel edges near your favorite inlet. Launching your kayak at Sawfish Park in Jupiter will put you in good vicinity of some good channels. Pompano jigs, D.O.A. Lures 2.75” Shrimp, and a good ole bucktail jig are a few of my favorite lures. Spanish mackerel can give you some nonstop action on the beach and on the inside Intracoastal. Finding the schools and throwing spoons and bucktail jigs will entice a bite.
Offshore
Prepare for being cold and wet when going offshore this time of year. Get a good pair of bibs or light waders from Frogg Toggs to keep you dry when launching and from waves while out

there. Sailfish and kingfish will be the most common catches with a random mahi and wahoo in the mix. Slow trolling goggle eyes and blue runners in 90-250 feet of water will be your best bet to get a bite. Don’t forget to grab a few Yo-Zuri Crystal Minnows to troll as well if bait is hard to come by. I like to run a deep diver and shallow runner to cover more of the water column.
Freshwater
Peacock bass and clown knifefish will be chewing this month. Launching at Lake Ida West Park is a good place to launch your kayak. Try 10-to-15-pound YoZuri TopKnot Fluorocarbon leader and a 2/0 circle hook casting in and around structure and weed lines to get onto a few clowns with finger mullet and shiners. Look to fish the mid-water column and below by adding a pinch weight to your leader and get that bait in their face.

ello and welcome to the Coastal Angler Magazine January fishing report. This winter will bring some hot fishing in our waters. Sailfish, dolphin, wahoo, and kingfish will be the offshore choice. When heading out, take a drive to the south and let the stream take you north. If you’re just looking for sails, try the 160’ depth off the Dodge Wall. If you’re looking for kings, stay around 90’ depth. Live bait will be the key to landing quality fish and can be easily bought from your local bait boat; these guys monitor VHF 68 and it’s best to get their number for the next time and give them a call the night before with your order. Kite fishing will be in full effect this month, but flat lining and deep rods will produce too. Don’t forget the wire trace at the end of your leader for the wahoo or kings, you never know! For the inshore anglers, the inlet will be a hot spot. Schools of jack and tarpon will be invading the beaches and ICW. This is the time to use your fancy fish finder and mark the fish before you drop as there could be a huge school just 20 yards to the port side. Along with hard-fighting jacks, there will be spawning sheepshead on the bottom of the channel with shrimp being the bait of choice, but clams will get those sheep biting. Be aware, this time of year, there’s a lot of tournament fishing going on so try to fish on non-tournament days. Good luck and remember, “You can’t catch them from the couch.” www.USHarbors.com

appy New Year! January offers a plethora of species to target throughout Jupiter and Palm Beach. Typically, cool fronts bring cool water temperatures and seasonal weather. The cooler northeast winds bring in migratory schooling fish for anglers to battle. The Intracoastal waters will be teaming with jacks, tarpon, snook, drum, sharks, and many other species. Live baits work great, as well as artificial baits like D.O.A. C.A.L 3” Shad Tail in glow/gold belly rush and D.O.A. Shrimp. Remember, work your baits slow and work the area thoroughly. Look for any signs of bait and birds signifying fish are in the area. Snook can be found cruising shallow flats, docks, and seawalls. Artificial baits like D.O.A. 3” Shrimp and D.O.A. Curl Tail are awesome baits to get linesiders to chew. The bigger snook can be found around bridges and deep holes ranging from 5 to 20 feet. D.O.A. TerrorEyz and C.A.L. 3” Shad Tail are excellent baits to jig the bottom for rod bending action. Channels, mangrove shorelines, and seawalls will offer great fishing for jacks, bluefish, mackerel, drum, pompano, and snook. Clean and moving water are the key for successful fishing. Well, that is the fishing report for the Jupiter and Palm Beach area, hope you all enjoyed. Remember, you can’t catch them from the couch, so get out there and get hooked up. Tight lines!

appy New Year! 2025 flew by, so many wonderful fishing memories, new adventures, and great clients coming down to South Florida to fish. If you fished with us last year, I want to personally say thank you from the bottom of my heart. It’s a new year, and that means new opportunities to get outside and in nature, which includes my favorite activity, fishing. Fishing isn’t just a thing I do; it’s my whole life. It’s what’s on my mind 24/7, it’s what gets me out of bed at 4 a.m. to head to the lake, and what keeps me going to better my game for tournaments and charters. The fishing this time of year can be dicey depending on the weather we get. More of a mild winter is what I am hoping for, and this will set the stage for the rest of the season. January is a time where fishing has high highs and low lows, and that all stems from weather. Peacock bass feed in between the cold fronts, and when it warms up a little, they are gorging on everything they can find. When it cools off mostly after the front has passed through,

they shut down for a day or two. Peacock bass and all of the exotic tropical fish we target go through cycles, and if you pick the cycle at the correct time, you’re going to have a great day. January isn’t necessarily the time I recommend to go peacock bass fishing, but there are plenty of times where those good days are really good and outweigh those bad days. Fishing the Everglades in the winter: Let’s skip the exotics for a moment and talk about our native fish. Bass, bluegills, and crappie are very active this time of the year, and you can catch all of them in the Everglades. Bass fishing is my favorite wintertime activity because it’s tough to have a bad time. Any decent bass angler should be able to have a 100-fish day out there and have a top 5 bag of up to 25+ pounds! Some baits to try - spinnerbaits, A-Rigs, 10” worms, deep-diving crank baits, deep-diving jerkbaits, top water, and one of my favorites, the 4/5” jerkbait. If you’re not having a 100-fish day, you are doing something wrong or you’re fishing on or just after a tournament day. No matter the fish count, a nice day on the water is better than a lot of things, so get out and enjoy the weather, it won’t be here for long!

uckily, I have never personally been seasick, but I can con!rm that when it gets someone, they look like they legitimately want death. Watching people board the boat in the morning full of personality, and quickly turning into a quiet, helpless version of themselves breaks my heart every time. It’s funny, I’ve taken people !ve miles out in flat calm seas and watched them turn green within an hour, while others can ride out a choppy twelvehour sword!sh trip without a single grimace. Seasickness, or motion sickness, isn’t about toughness. It’s about biology, and knowing how to outsmart it can mean the difference between the trip of a lifetime and one you’d rather forget. At its core, seasickness is your brain throwing a !t over mixed signals. Your inner ear, which controls balance, feels the constant motion of the boat. Your eyes, however, might be locked on the deck or a smartphone, telling your brain that you’re not moving. This mismatch can confuse the body enough to trigger nausea, cold sweats, dizziness, and that unmistakable “I need the rail” moment. The good news is that you can do a lot to keep it from happening, or at least keep it from ruining your day. Start the night before. One of the biggest mistakes I see people make is showing up tired, dehydrated, and with nothing in their stomach. Lack of sleep makes your body more sensitive to motion. Drink plenty of water the day before and have a balanced dinner, nothing too greasy or heavy. And go easy on alcohol, nothing gets people

Eat a light breakfast with complex carbs and protein; think a bagel with peanut butter or scrambled eggs with toast. Skip the spicy breakfast burrito...you’ll thank me later. Pick your spot wisely. The closer you are to the boat’s center, the less movement you’ll feel. On smaller boats, this often means staying near the console or midship. If you’re anchored or drifting, facing into the wind can help you get fresh air, and fresh air is one of your best allies. Whatever you do, don’t lay down and close your eyes, no matter how much you’d prefer to be in the fetal position, this is your enemy. Keep your eyes on the horizon. Your inner ear is telling your brain you’re moving, and your eyes need to con!rm it. Locking your gaze on the horizon gives your brain consistent information and can stop the mixed-signal meltdown before it starts. Avoid the downward spiral. Once seasickness takes hold, it can be hard to shake. If you feel that !rst wave of queasiness, act fast. Get to fresh air, keep your head up, and focus on a !xed point.

Know your aids. There are plenty of over-the-counter and prescription remedies, from Dramamine and Bonine to scopolamine patches, but timing matters! Take them before you step aboard, or even get them in your system the night prior to a trip. Ginger candies, wrist acupressure bands, and peppermint gum can also help. Respect your limits. If you know you’re prone to seasickness, tell your captain ahead of time. We’d much rather work with you to make your trip comfortable than see you suffer in silence. Lastly, if you do need to heave, please try to do it downwind of the captain. I dont care if its all over the boat, but truly, I have been puked on more times than I’d like to admit. To the client who got me right in the mouth from 10 feet away on a windy trip, 10/10 for accuracy, but I’d rather not be handing out those awards. Seasickness is nothing to be embarrassed about as even seasoned captains have had their moments. The key is to prepare, listen to your body, and take action early. The ocean is an incredible place, and a little planning can make sure you enjoy every second of it, without clinging to the rail.
