he anticipation is over. Snook season opened Sept. 1 on Florida’s Atlantic coast, and I know a lot of anglers who are excited to get that thump, fire up the skillet and enjoy a beautiful keeper snook with friends and family. Snook, in case you didn’t know it, are pretty much the most awesome inshore gamefish around. They grow large, up into the 30- and 40-pound range. They are aggressive feeders, and the fight is definitely something to write home about. Florida anglers are lucky to live in one of the world’s best places to catch snook. For everyone else, it’s definitely worth a fall trip to the Sunshine State to do battle with these tacklebusters. Regulations allow you to keep just one fish a day in the 28- to 32-inch slot limit. One of the best ways to catch that one keeper—or a giant slob snook—is beach fishing. You don’t need a fancy boat. All you need is your own two legs, a rod and reel and the appropriate tackle. Location — When fishing for snook, tarpon

and other gamefish, there are a few key things to look for: birds flying/diving, baitfish being ambushed, obvious structure and current flow. I always bring binoculars to the beach and scan the shoreline for birds and baitfish. If you don’t see any action, keep moving down the beach. I drive my truck to every beach access, quickly hop out and scout. This is the fastest way to cover ground and scan for what you are looking for! The more you fish the beach, the more you will learn and understand a pattern. Snook are hunters; they stage up in obvious areas ready to ambush prey. The beach may all look the same on the surface, but underwater is a different story. Be on the lookout for deep holes, rocks, grass, dropoffs, swash channels and any other structure you might find. Any time sand meets grass or rocks, that’s a great area to fish. Look past the obvious structure, and sometimes that will yield fish other anglers fail to notice. Equipment — When it comes to beach snook fishing, finesse is everything. However, the goal is to get the fish in quickly to ensure a healthy release if it’s not a keeper. Typically, you want to

downscale your line, leader, and hook when beach fishing. My go-to set up is a 4000 spinning reel; 10- to 20-lb. braid; a 7-foot medium action rod; 3 to 4 feet of 30-lb. fluorocarbon leader; a 1/4- to 3/8-ounce jig-head; and 3- to 6-inch swimbaits, depending on the forage, depth and fishing conditions. Jerkbaits and plugs that dive 3 to 5 feet are also a good option. Matching the hatch is key. Use lures that look similar in size and color to what the fish are feeding on. Fishing with live bait is also a good option. I always keep a 5- or 6-foot cast net in the bed of my truck. It’s lightweight, easy, and gets the job done. Pilchards, threadfin, mullet, croaker and whiting are all great baits found on Florida’s east coast beaches. Keep an aerator and bucket with a lid to ensure the baits are alive and cool. The bigger the bait, the bigger the tackle you will need. I like to free line baits, but I carry pinchon split shot weights if I need to get baits down into the strike zone. I recommend 2/0 to 6/0 circle hooks for the best hook up ratio. Time — The best times to go fishing are at dawn and dusk. Tides are also extremely important. The best time to fish for beach snook is the first hour before and after incoming and outgoing tides. I’ve had the best results right before and after high tide. It is important to check the tides and plan ahead. I also log my catches in a small notebook, where I write down the date, tide, time, tackle/bait used. Start a logbook, and you will eventually have excellent data to use in planning. That is the best way to truly learn and master beach snook fishing. rappie, also known as “specks,” and “sac-a-lait” and a host of other names, depending on where you live, are absolutely delicious and are easy to catch for the whole family. I grew up saltwater fishing and did not know much about crappie. However, all it took was one trip to the lake and I was hooked on these fish; on the correct light tackle crappie are just as much fun as larger fish, and more “yummy” than most! Crappie, both white and black variations, can be found in almost any body of freshwater from Michigan to Florida. I usually catch them in Lake

Okeechobee, Fla. Depending on the time of year, you will catch them in grass mats, along edges, in deep holes, and even through the ice. They generally hold tight to some type of cover like brushpiles or sunken timber, and they eat primarily smaller fish. Small minnows or baits that mimic small minnows work best. When the fish are biting, it is easy on many lakes to see where crappie are by the dozens of boats seeking to catch what I call “lake lobster!” This type of fishing is a way of life for many lake anglers. My favorite way to catch them is often called “spider rigging.” Anglers set out multiple specially designed rods, up to 20 sometimes, such as the BP Crappie Max Crappie Rod, with very light line and leader (no more than 4- to 8-lb. test), a bobber, then a split shot and a small hook. We generally use size #1, #2 or #4 Mustad Aberdeen hooks, and you can try different color hooks as well—gold, bronze or red. The easiest bait to catch crappie with is tiny live minnows from the local tackle shop. Set your rods at varying depths, and discover where they are biting! If you want to up your game, try jigging for them. Mustad crappie jigs are usually “ball head” jigs and come in a variety of colors. Drop your jig into deep holes and along grass mats or slow troll a spread of jigs around the mouths of creeks. You can attach a variety of trailers, curly tails, minnows and some even add spinners to the jig. Lastly, to really make it fun you can even fly fish for crappie. They will hit many types of flies, and be sure to focus on the size of the fly as much as anything. In conclusion, the only way to catch crappie is to GO, get out there! It’s time to bring the entire family, kids and everyone, for a wonderful day on the water and an even better dinner. This type of fishing is a great way to introduce young kids to fishing because it’s hard to not catch a crappie or other by-catch like bass, catfish, sunfish and bluegills when out the lake. ere’s what anglers in Maine were up to in August. The Casco Bay Bluefin Bonanza, out of South Portland, Maine, hauled in more than 10,000 pounds of bluefin tuna Aug. 6-8. That’s a whole lot of good eating. The field of 41 boats landed 23 big fish, and the top four finishers all boated bluefins heavier than 600 pounds. Local captain Pete Speeches and the crew of Backstabber won the tournament and $6,250 for a 687.5-pound giant they brought to the scale the third and final day of fishing on Saturday, Aug. 8. Weigh-ins were exciting and filled with drama on Day 3, as the top five positions changed multiple times in just a few hours. Capt. Keith Jordan (Bailey & Bella) established an early lead on the first day with a 679.5-pound bluefin. Last year’s winner, Capt. Kurt Christensen (Molly Jane) brought in a 538-pounder on the second day, followed shortly thereafter by Capt. Nate Bolduc (Cecelia Jean) with a 501.5 pounder. Molly Jane’s second fish, a 671.5-pounder reeled in by Aiden McLean and Reid Hansen seemed a solid second place. Just two hours later, Bailey & Bella’s second fish looked to be a contender but fell just shy at 637 pounds. Their fish had barely been

hoisted and weighed when Backstabber brought in a 687.5-pound behemoth that launched them into first place. Capt. Kevin Lord (Square Footage) shuffled the deck again after lunch with a 547 pounder. Forecast for Lake Hickory & Rhodhiss By: Joey Randall

In September, the biggest thing you’ve got to remember is this: transition. It’s when the lakes start to turnover, which is when the oxygen in the water stratifies. Instead of a deep thermocline, which is a dead layer at the bottom with no oxygen in it, it stratifies so that that layer completely just immerses itself throughout the whole lake. And from that, you get a period of transition where fish either start to move back towards the creek, or they’ll start to move shallow from their deeper summer homes. Early in the month, bass are still in their deeper waters and eating at nights like they have been for the hotter weather we’ve just endured. You can find success using slower presentations, dragging plastics along the bottom or fishing finesse. That’s what seems to work best for those first two weeks of September. One of my absolute favorite baits is the Bizz Baits Dizzy Diamond. If you haven’t familiarized yourself with it, now’s as good a time as it gets.

more often. They become more shad oriented. You know, your typical more “fall” stuff. In late September, I start making my transition from plastics to moving baits; spinnerbait type lures. A lot of topwater with buzzbaits. The color white is starting to become a common theme on all of your moving baits. A point of emphasis when looking to achieve success fishing in the month of September is going to be to really bounce around. Try to locate one of these two things – A) fish themselves or B) which depth zone they’re in and want to be. There will be bass shallow and there will be bass deep, and there will be bass in between suspending. They’re going to be all over the place. It’s not difficult to run patterns in September, but it IS difficult to develop patterns. It’s important to have realistic expectations this month, don’t expect to get out there and just slay ‘em. The fish are scattered and if they’re not biting, it can be really, really tough. But, what’s sweeter than the payoff after a long day?

Then we hit the second half of September. The transition begins. Bass begin moving out of the main channels into the creeks. They start biting shallower. They start biting topwater

Forecast for Lake Norman By: Captain Craig Price

Ahh September – cooler, shorter days and the first northerly winds of the season. Though they’re relatively weak systems compared to a true NE blow, these fronts do bring cooler air and begin the fall cool down. But, not so fast my friend. Early to mid-September is often a hot extension of August. But add a few of the weak “nor’easters” to the shortening days, and local waters will begin to cool down. By the end of the month, the forage and predators should be in fairly predictable areas, and the fall bite begins. On Lake Norman, that means increasingly better topwater opportunities for hybrid stripers and spotted bass, with the occasional striper and ever-present white perch in the mix. At least the perch are usually larger than the early to mid-summer specimens. At dawn and dusk, look for surface feeding activity around major and secondary points and adjacent bays - near creek mouths from mid-lake to Terrapin Creek. Flats and humps along the river channel above the 150 bridge can be very active too. Large schools of bait will gather in these areas before they begin their annual push into the creeks, which typically coincides with the full moon in October. If you can find schools of shad or herring on your sonar in 15-30 ft. of water before sunup, you’re probably in an area where “it’s getting ready to happen”. Walking lures like Spooks, Spook Jr’s, or Top Dogs are favorites of mine, but many other baits work too. Buzzbaits, broken back Rapalas or Redfins, spinnerbaits, crankbaits, bucktails, swimbaits on light lead jigheads – the options are many. It’s smart to have at least a few different designs rigged and ready because the action can be brief, and sometimes even blitzing fish can be unexpectedly picky. I like to think in terms of baits that run only on the surface, just under the surface, or lures that are versatile enough to fish up, down, or in between. As a rule, fish shallow to deeper as the day brightens, and deeper to shallow as the sun sets. The middle and bottom of the water column become especially important as the surface bite slows down. For colors, I like clear for my spooks with a feathered tail hook, but I also like combinations of red, white, and chartreuse. Shad and herring colors are good too. Keep in mind that bigger is not always better on Norman. If you’re not getting bites, go smaller and slower. These fish are often chasing juvenile baits and matching the hatch may be needed. If you’re so inclined and there aren’t too many boats in the way, pitching or trolling live baits into or near this activity is fun and effective. This technique often produces bigger fish than artificials do. Live baits also offer the ready option of being fished further down in the water column as needed. Finally, if hot weather and water temps in the upper 80’s persist into September, catfish (blues) plus spots and hybrids can be found along the river channel flood plain, or in the channel itself, from Marker 10 to Cowans Ford Dam. If herring are dying off and floating in a given area, use live herring, large threadfins, or gizzard shad fished 15-40 ft. deep in water depths from 30 ft. and out. Planer boards or Redi-rig floats get the baits out from under your boat and can be especially useful on bright days. Once the water cools, look for cats in the same areas where the aforementioned bait schools and surface action are found. Fresh cut bait and live baits slow trolled on Carolina or Santee rigs are effective. Hopefully I’ll see you in September, with a bent rod in your hand, yelling Fish On!

The long hot days will start to cool, the days begin to get shorter, hunting season begins and the fishing starts to get better and better. Best fishing will still be late evening as the sun sets, overnight and early morning before the heat sets in for the day. Find the schools of shad and the bass will not be far behind them. Bass will hold deeper during the day and move onto flats and shallower water to feed as the water cools. Blue cats will do much of the same. While live bait is my go to, any thing that mimics what the fish are feeding on should produce. Having said that if im fishing artificial im usually throwing something that mimics a shad. For catfish im using exlusivly live or cut bait. Ill either anchor up or drift depending on conditions and time for the day. The fresher the bait the better. Crappie and perch can be caught long lining pretty much any time of the day while I still prefer late eve, night or early morning to avoid boat traffic. When targeting crappie and perch I use very light tackle with a mix of live minnows and lures drifting slowly. I always take good care of my live bait and keep them as healthy as possible. I wont use a bait that has died. All to often I see people in the exact same spot doing the exact same thing. Move around, try something new, explore. The lake has so much to offer and most will never explore half of it. Give it a shot, you never now whats around the next bend!!!!

Keep Calm and Welcome September By: Michelle Armstrong Here in the south, we can finally get some relief from the scalding hot days of August. Looking forward, the average temperatures in September are 87/67. The Bass can look forward to a slow decrease in their water temp moving from the usual 90 degree toward the 80 degree mark. What does that mean for Bass catching? Well, Bass are on the move. Where you find them one day, they likely won't be in the exact place the next. But you can count on that they will be close by. A few of things are going on for Mr. Bass. One, he is hungry and he knows he needs to start getting his body ready now, for the upcoming winter. Much like we (not me) train our bodies for a marathon, Bass need to train too. Two, the sunlight beats down on the water for shorter hours. This creates more plankton. Wanna know what eats plankton? Shad. Wanna know who eats Shad? Bass. So three, it's a good scenario for catching fish. Shad are on the move. They run to the back of pockets, creeks, or coves where they are "balled up" munching on Plankton. This creates a perfect opportunity for a Bass feasting frenzy. As a result, the Shad disperse and run for the deeper water and Bass are sure to follow. This is where the catching will slow down. Bass don't seem to rely on Shad while spread apart. They find deeper cover via brush piles, rocky points, etc. and wait. Eventually the Shad will gather back up. They "ball up" and hang out over and around misleading protection. Unfortunately for them, this is exactly where the Bass are hanging out ready to ambush. And that they do. Typically when this happens, the eruption on the surface is about one cast beyond a fisherman's reach. (I'll return to that in a moment) Bass seem to school behind or just below a ball of Shad. This makes a crankbait an ideal choice. Choices of the right crankbait is dependent on whether it's early or late September. Some types of shad will spawn several times between April and August. Therefore early September may call for a larger crankbait due to the early spawners' size. Early in the month I like a 3/8oz Chrome/black back Cotton Cordell Big O crankbait. It has a longer, chunkier profile (much like me) and replicates the bigger Shad being chased by bigger Bass. In the latter part of the month when the newer Shad are prominent, I switch to a Brian's Shad Crawler #1 in Natural Shad. This bait has a much smaller profile that will better match the new hatchlings. It's also built to be used in skinny water, ideal for when the shad run shallow. This little guy digs the bottom stirring up small bugs, plankton, and bonus crawfish underneath the Shad creating even more chances of enticing Bass. You can rig either crankbait with 12-14 lb fluorocarbon line on a 705CB Powell Endurance rod. It's super light and will cast a country mile. Returning to my observation about feeding frenzies; it seems like you're never in the right spot when a frenzy occurs. Typically just shy of casting distance. Because of this it's a great idea to have a longer rod on deck. My all-time favorite is a Powell Endurance 7116CB. It's a beast and will hurl your favorite "shadlike" crankbait a country mile and a half.

There is Something Fishy in Those Weeds By Scott T. Fletcher

According to the USEPA: a wetland is an area where water covers the soil or is present either at or near the soil surface for varying periods of time during the growing season. Water saturation determines how the soil develops and the types of plant and animal communities living in the wetland. Up until about 40 years ago, wetlands were viewed as snake-infested, disease-ridden areas to be avoided at all costs, good only for disposing old refrigerators and shopping carts. We have since refined our thinking to understand the value of wetlands and the benefits they provide. These notable benefits include fish and wildlife habitat (providing shelter and food for numerous species), water quality improvement (intercepting, removing and retaining nutrients, bacteria, toxins, and sediment-loaded runoff), flood protection (storing and slowly releasing surface water and impeding flood flows), shoreline erosion protection (protecting shorelines and streambanks by holding soil in place and absorbing the energy of waves and flows), and opportunities for recreation and aesthetic appreciation (fishing and duck-hunting). Thus, conserving wetlands can support the protection of our health, safety, and outdoor recreation by reducing flood damage, preserving our lake and stream water quality, and providing opportunities to haul in a 6-pound largemouth or catch sight of a few wing-flapping wood ducks. Wetlands in the Piedmont/Charlotte area consist of several varieties. These inland/non-tidal wetlands include aquatic beds that are covered in water 100 percent of the time like pondweeds and eelgrass; emergent wetlands that exist in saturated conditions or are frequently flooded year around like water willow (pictured above), cattails, pickerelweed, and sedges; scrub-shrub wetlands that are frequently to temporarily flooded and are host to willows, buttonbush, and swamp rose; and

forested wetlands (or bottomlands) that typically flood temporarily and grow red maple, green ash, and tupelo. In the Charlotte and Piedmont area of NC, you will find numerous waterbodies with large acreage of wetlands. Lake Wylie has 56 acres of forested wetland, seven acres of scrub-shrub, and two acres of emergent wetland as found in the Catawba Creek arm near Belmont. Mountain Island Lake, north of Charlotte, has 283 acres of forested wetland, 169 acres of scrub-shrub, and 41 acres of emergent wetlands, primarily in the shallow coves and backwaters near Latta Nature Preserve. High Rock Lake, on the Yadkin River, has more than 2,500 acres of forested wetlands, 800 acres of scrub-shrub, and 28 acres of emergent wetland especially in several of the upper arm reaches. Finally, Lake Tillery has 140 acres of forested wetlands, 298 acres of emergent, and 8 acres of scrub-shrub wetlands especially on the upper end near Morrow Mountain State Park. So next time you cast a tempting soft frog near a bass cruising in the “weeds” or call in mallards who go winging into the reeds, remember you are standing near a wetland whose benefits routinely go unnoticed. It was August in the Carolinas. It was hot. A real feel of almost 100 degrees daily. While most people are looking to sit inside in the cool weather, Queen City Kayak Bass Fishing just keeps on rolling. We finished our July event on the Santee Cooper system down in South Carolina. It was hot! It was about 95 degrees the entire week of practice and about the same on tournament day. It was the clubs first visit to the lake and with the talk of wasps, gators, mosquitos, hot water, and who knows what else, we were unsure of what our turnout would be. The list kept growing right up until the 10pm deadline and we pulled in 87 anglers to battle it out. Another great showing for the Carolina’s Premier Fishing Club. Fishing was very up and down for the crowd. We broke our largest limit record, which has been standing for 5 years. We broke our 2020 Big Bass, three times that day, and we broke our 2020 small bass record as well! What a fun day. Some of the field struggled, not weighing in a fish, but they will have another chance as we re-visit this amazing fishery in 2021. We are towards the end of the 2020 season, the race for the Angler of the Year award is very tight and exciting. Just a few points separate our top 3 anglers. These anglers are fishing to win $1000 which was sponsored by The Angler Magazine!! We also have a tight race going on for the anglers looking to qualify for the sixth annual Tournament of Champions event. This is a goal that all QCKBF members have; to make it into this amazing free event for all the money gathered during the season. A true, best of the best event. We took August off from our trail event schedule, and we focused on our Charity event on the 22nd. The 3rd Annual Emerald School of Excellence Event.

2020 has been an amazing season thus far. We are 8 trail events in, along with many other side events and now the charity event. We are averaging 93 anglers per trail event. We have paid out almost $50,000 this season and have almost 120 paid members with 2100 members on the FB page. We are already looking towards the 2021 season and have some big plans. We at QCKBF hosted an event that will donate 100% of the proceeds to Emerald. We have collaborated with Bizz Baits and True South Custom Lures to provide the lures and tackle that the anglers must use in this event. ’ve fished the Shinnecock Inlet in Hampton Bays, N.Y. for many years and have usually found plenty of striped bass and bluefish to keep me occupied. One afternoon last September, I pulled into the parking lot on the inlet’s west side, took a look at the water and smiled as I saw a large school of bait flashing on the surface. Something, or a lot of somethings were feeding on them. There was a flotilla of maybe 15 boats chasing the school, including a party boat, which was crammed with weekend anglers. The school moved quickly and as I worked my way along the jetty, I could just make out larger predator fish thrashing about on the surface. It was a real blitz! On the shore with me were 20 or so anglers, all trying to keep up as fish zipped north to south and back north again. At times, they were too far away to cast to, and all we could do was watch as the boats tried to corral the school. The fish repeatedly slid through the gaps and veered off in another direction. Even though there were close to 100 anglers involved in this melee, all of whom at one point or another were able to cast into the midst of the feeding frenzy, no one got so much as a strike. Except for the guy standing just off to my left. He had driven from in Montauk, where he had spent a fruitless morning looking for stripers. He was tired when he got to the inlet, so he parked his vehicle and settled in for a nap. When he opened his eyes, the school was right in front of him. Maybe because he was more rested than anyone else, or perhaps because he was simply a better angler, he hooked into two different fish on a pencil popper. The first spat the hook quickly, but the second stayed on. It didn’t take long for him to realize what he’d laced into. It was a false albacore. Albies are not huge, but they fight like a fish of much greater size. The runs this guy’s fish made were extraordinary, both for their length and speed. It never jumped, as the other blitzing albies had while gorging on the baitfish, but his fish did come within view a couple of times. It looked to be close to 10 pounds, which the guy confirmed once he’d landed and released it. “That was my first albie!” he shouted. It was the first time I’d even seen one, so I walked over to offer congratulations and we chatted for a bit. The other anglers were too busy trying to get their lures back into the water to join us. Two North Carolina Catfish Records Fall NCWRC Photos

ummertime means catfish to a lot of anglers, and it was one heck of a summer for catfish in North Carolina. In July, two state catfish records were broken. The first, an enormous Lake Gaston blue cat, weighed more than 120 pounds. The second, a 78-pound, 14-ounce Neuse River flathead broke a record that has stood for 15 years. Joey Baird, of Lawrenceville, Va., caught his state record 121-pound, 9-ounce blue catfish out of Six Pound Creek at Lake Gaston on July 5. The

monster fish, which ate a chunk of cut bait, was more than 5 feet long, with a girth of 40.5 inches. It broke a 117-pound, 8-ounce record that has stood since June 2016. Lake Gaston is a 20,000-acre reservoir of the Roanoke River up on North Carolina’s northern border with Virginia. It has a history of producing giant blue catfish, as this is the fourth North Carolina record blue to come from its waters. The Roanoke River system also lays claim to the world record blue catfish. The largest blue catfish ever certified came from Kerr Lake, Virginia, which is one dam upstream of Lake Gaston on the Roanoke. That fish, which weighed 143 pounds, was caught in June 2011. The new North Carolina record flathead was caught by Pikeville angler Tyler Barns. The 78-pound, 14-ounce beast ate a live bream fished in the Neuse River on July 20. Barns’ monster fish was more than 4 feet long and had a girth of more than 3 feet. It bested the 78-pound record flathead caught from the Cape Fear River in 2005. The Neuse River runs from Falls Lake north of Raleigh all the way to the coast to feed the Atlantic Ocean at Pamlico Sound.
