I
t’s snook season in Florida, and despite a closure to harvest for much of the state’s west coast, the next couple months offer great action in the world’s best location to target the state’s most iconic inshore/ nearshore gamefish. Snook strike aggressively, fight hard and grow large—into the 20and 30-pound range of true slob snook. The Florida state record weighed 45.75 pounds. It was caught by Heather Lynn Conners near Sebastian in 2015. But even the slot fish—those in the 28- to 33-inch range you’re allowed to keep one of—will test your gear. It’s one of the most explosive and exciting gamefish on the planet. Snook are extremely temperature sensitive, and tactics vary according to the season. From the beaches and nearshore, where they spend their summers, they will move over the next few months seeking warmer water in sheltered winter haunts. First, you’ll find them in deep water adjacent to the shallow flats. Then, driven by cooling sea temps, they’ll push all the way up into the creeks and rivers, residential canals, warm water discharge from power plants, upper estuaries, and anywhere they can find suitable water conditions. The harsher the winter, the more pronounced the move. Fall through winter is the time when big, line-snapping snook will hunker down in areas that might seem highly unlikely to the uninformed. With the mild winters of the last decade, much has been made of the northward spread of snook. A tropical species, they historically thrived only on the southern coasts of Florida, up to about to about Sebastian in the Atlantic and Tampa in the Gulf. However, in recent years, snook have set up shop farther north, in areas that would have been unheard of a decade ago. These days, it’s possible to target snook at Homosassa and farther north along the Nature Coast of the Gulf and up toward Jacksonville in the Atlantic. They have also shown up much farther north. This summer, Coastal Angler Magazine reported on a juvenile snook caught in a cast net way up in Winyah Bay, South Carolina. First timers seeking to do battle with snook should hire a captain. Along with being big and strong, large female snook are notoriously smart and usually require specialized tackle, techniques and a good deal of patience. Their tendency to hole up in the structure of mangroves, rocks and bridge and pier pilings makes break-offs common, and the expertise of a good guide increases your chances of actually landing one. The good news is, snook have been relatively unmolested by anglers during the closed season of the last three months. Now is as good a time as any to fool a big cow nosed into the current under some residential canal dock. They feed best in low light of the early mornings and late evenings when there’s a rising or falling tide. The stronger tides around the new and full moons are optimal for catching them. Keep that in mind when booking your trip to Florida’s snook fisheries, and you could find yourself experiencing the fishing trip of a lifetime.

Stranger Things from the Bottom of the Bay If watermen have a soft spot for a creature, it is for seahorses. Visitors and some residents are surprised to learn the Chesapeake Bay has a native sea horse. Even life-long residents rarely glimpse these delicate and charming animals. So, where are they? With limited mobility, seahorses hide from predators in the grasses that grow on the Bay’s bottom. But make no assumptions, seahorses are not vegetarians. They are predators. Unlike faster, moving hunters, seahorses wait for their prey to pass by and effectively suck them up with their snout. How often do watermen cross paths with seahorses? More frequently than one might think. From the time crab pots are set in early spring, they become part of the Bay’s ecosystem. Grasses, shrimp, and amphipods fall from the pots each time they are pulled aboard a workboat. Seahorses are frequently found among haul or with closer inspection they are spotted with their tails lightly wrapped around the thin wire pots. Even though seahorses are prized as ornamental art or aquarium fish, waterman toss them back into the Bay. This seahorse took a different course. POTOMAC RIVER FORECAST By Thomas Raines
The Potomac River experienced a lot of good grass growth during the month of August. Hotter temperatures and a lack of rain has made the water clarity improve as well. Anglers looking to fish grass are finally seeing more typical summer river patterns. Early cool mornings are providing anglers with good top water action before the sun brings a sharp rise in temperature. These actively feeding fish will typically eat a hollow body frog, buzzbait, or a soft plastic toad-style bait. When the sun is high and temperatures rise bass can be found on the edges of vegetation or docks closer to deep water. Fishing can also be found on current breaks throughout the day, this is an easy way to predict. During high tides fish can still be found moving into grass beds and shoreline areas. This pattern will only improve as the month progresses and the fish begin their fall push into the shallows to feed up before winter. Catfish anglers are still finding numbers of fish on channel swings and drop offs. Anglers are still finding luck fishing under balloons for suspended fish. Pan fish are still hanging out around docks and brush piles. The best places to fill the box with these tasty fish are in areas like Mallows Bay, Swan Creek or brush piles stuck around main river docks. The snakehead in the river are still sitting in shallow water and show no signs of leaving anytime soon. These fish seem to be less aggressive lately possibly due to fishing pressure or the high temperatures. Everything in the river should start feeding heavily as the month progresses. Fish will understand that these cooler temperatures will be here to stay soon and more fish will be found in shallow water as this takes place. If we see air temperatures drop into the 70s during the day this month you’re not going to want to miss the action on the water!

Kayak Fishing Growing in Popularity There’s no denying the growing popularity of kayak fishing. The serenity of slipping a kayak into still waters at the break of dawn while the water still steams away the night is undeniably appealing. Bank anglers have an affordable platform to get on the water and anglers that normally fish from a larger boat can access smaller waters. The market is easily dominated by sit-on-top boats and more and more anglers are moving from the paddle to a pedal system for propulsion. Hobie first introduced the Mirage drive system in 1997. It was alone in the pedal drive fishing kayak market until Native introduced the Propel system in 2008. Old Town followed with their Predator PDL drive in 2016. It is estimated that 25% of anglers fishing from a kayak use some form of pedal drive system. Pedaling a fishing kayak offers some unique advantages over paddling. Pedaling is more efficient with greater speed and control. Fishing kayaks are not typically built for speed so any ability to get to the fish quicker is a benefit. And since you pedal with your feet you are now hands free to manipulate fishing gear and fish on the move. About the only thing you give up is underwater clearance but most pedal systems can be easily retracted to gain clearance. Tangier Classic Fishing Tournament As a team of five close friends who have fished the Crisfield area our whole lives, we’ve decided to plan an event that brings a fresh new edge to the Chesapeake Bay angling community. Our tournament offers a unique format. Anglers can fish anywhere in the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries in 3 divisions: Powerboat, Kayak, and Kids. They’ll be able to fish two out of three days, selecting one lay day that best suits them. We will be judging fish by length instead of weight, allowing fishermen to utilize a tournament app to submit their catch by photo. This provides real-time updates on standings, and gives anglers the option to release their fish if they choose. However, we will still have a judging table set up at the Legion for those who prefer to keep their fish and want them judged in person. Releasing fish is not mandatory. We have decided to go this route due to the recent concerns of the striped bass stock. We feel by giving anglers this option we’ll be doing our part for conservation, while still appealing to all fishermen across the region. Anglers will fish to compile a five fish stringer from 11 eligible species including: Striped Bass, slot and bull sized Red Drum, Cobia, Speckled Trout, Grey Trout, Bluefish, Flounder, Spadefish, Croaker, Sheepshead, and White Perch. In addition to supporting the Crisfield community, we have decided to benefit young Lane Dodson directly. A Crisfield local (and avid fisherman), Lane was diagnosed last year with Leukemia and Diabetes at the age of 6. August Wrap-up Fishing Report By Ken Lamb
Spot were caught from the Point Lookout Pier this weekend. One party of fishermen claimed a total of 350 of the tasty pan fish in a 24-hour period. That is some serious spot fishing. There are tons of undersized croaker there too. The spot will bring the bluefish and stripers looking for a meal. Good catches of spot and perch were reported from the Public areas at the St. George Island bridge in Piney Point. Catfish are biting there too. Spot are everywhere in the Potomac and Patuxent. Plenty of perch are on the rip rap along the St. Mary’s shoreline of the Patuxent from the bridge to Big Kingston amongst the piers. Bigger perch are taking tiny spinner bait lures on the rocks at the entrance to St. Leonard Creek. Bottom fishermen have perch and spot at Hawk’s Nest and do not overlook of shallow water fishing in 8 to 12 feet anywhere in the rivers. Rockfish are in the hide and seek mode in the shallows. Some areas are consistent in the mouth of the Patuxent at daybreak producing fish every morning. Most places will produce on cast lures, but sometimes you have to work hard for keepers. Spanish mackerel are blazing hot in the bay from the mouth of the Choptank to Smith Point on planers and small spoons. Trollers using surgical eels are picking up cobia from 72A to Smith Point. Big red drum are there as well. Sight casters are somewhat successful as are chummers. They are not jumping in the boat yet, but it will happen so be ready. Rockfish should be ready for trollers from Vero Beach to Ragged Point. White Perch are jumping in the boat at Ragged Point in the Potomac. FISHING MARYLAND’S PUBLIC PONDS By Thomas Raines

In Maryland when people think of fishing the first thing that comes to mind is usually the Chesapeake Bay or one of the great rivers around the state most people find to enjoy. Today in Maryland ponds are a very overlooked fishing destination. Many of us remember fishing ponds when we were younger, ponds are a great place for kids to learn how to fish. However, as we get older somehow we start to leave our pond fishing days behind in search of bigger and better fishing stories but sometimes the ponds we left behind as kids have grown up just as we have. In a recent trip to Myrtle Grove WMA I decided to fish the small pond at the end of the road. I made a few casts with a hollow body frog and caught one small fish in the thick of the lily pads. I explored a little more and managed to catch one more short fish on the frog before calling it quits for the day. For many people this could be a satisfying day on the water, but not for me. I went home on Google Earth Pro and went back in time to view the lake when it had less vegetation in order to get a better idea of what I was dealing with and getting a better understanding of the lake. Looking at the images on the map I found that the pond appears to be dammed at one end creating a “channel” running parallel to the dam. My next plan of action was to attack the pond with my kayak. I used my Lowrance Hook 4 sonar to map out the small channel I found on Google. I found out this small channel was only about a 1’ depression in the bottom, but this was enough of a change in a seemingly constant pond depth to hold fish. My first few casts yielded no results. I began to move up the shoreline walking a Z-man popping frog over the top of the coon tail grass in around 6’ of water. I made a cast at an area where the grass became sparse and after walking the frog 2-3 times I saw the explosion of my frog on the surface. After fighting the fish through the grass and getting him to the boat I was shocked to see that the bass was around 5lbs. I snapped a few pictures and shortly after I began casting again to the sparse looking clumps of grass. Not even 5 minutes after the first fish I see another explosion underneath of my frog. When I got the fish to the boat after a long battle in the grass I was amazed to see that this fish was even larger than the first. This is a good reminder that these small bodies of water can be a great place to catch big fish and learn how to fish no matter what your age or skill level might be. The pond was small enough for me to cover and dissect the whole thing all in a couple hours. For someone looking to get into bass fishing ponds are the ideal location. Many of the ponds we have in Maryland can be fished from shore and are easily covered in a day giving you plenty of time to adjust and really try to figure out the fish and come up with a pattern for the day.

Cambridge Angler Reels in Record Mahi Mahi near Ocean City
Jeff Wright of Cambridge has broken a 34-year-old Maryland state fishing record in the Atlantic Division for a common dolphinfish, or mahi mahi. Wright caught the 72.8-pound fish July 28 off the coast of Ocean City. Wright was aboard a boat above Poor Man’s Canyon practicing with friends for the upcoming White Marlin Open when his rod “went crazy” shortly after noon. “It literally took 25 minutes to get this in,” Wright said. “I had to play it until it finally gave up.” A Maryland Department of Natural Resources biologist identified the species as common dolphinfish — Coryphaena hippurus — and its weight was certified by Sunset Marina in Ocean City. Wright’s catch beat the existing record held by Kim Lawson, who reeled in a 67.8-pound common dolphinfish in July 1985. “It’s really exciting to see anglers like Wright break records that have been on the books for decades,” Recreational Fishing Outreach Coordinator Erik Zlokovitz said. “It just shows that with a little patience you could find yourself a part of Maryland’s angling history.” The department maintains state records for sport fish in four divisions – Atlantic, Chesapeake, Nontidal, and Invasive – and awards plaques to anglers who achieve record catches. Fish caught from privately-owned, fee-fishing waters are ineligible for consideration. Anglers who think they have a potential record catch should download and fill out a state record application and call 443569-1381 or 410-260-8325. The department suggests fish be immersed in ice water to preserve weight until it can be checked, confirmed, and certified.

Bringing The Dead (Bait) Back To life

n case you don’t already know and do this, here’s a trick that can save a day in the absence of live bait. If you’re going bottom fishing and pinfish, sardines, pogies or the others are hard to find with a cast net or sabiki, hedge your bets by keeping a couple dozen fresh or frozen baits about the diameter of a softball, or larger, in the cooler. Even in freshwater, when live gizzard shad or skipjacks are nowhere to be found, a box of frozen baits can still entice catfish, striped bass and others. Dropping a whole dead bait down will get bites, but if you take a minute to “butterfly” them, these once dead baitfish come back to life in the current. No grouper or big snapper can resist them when presented properly. Grunts pinkies and seabass will hammer at it, and eventually get the hook, but grouper or anything else with a large enough mouth will simply inhale it. I’ve seen times when the bite would shut down, even with live bait, and a fresh butterflied beeliner (vermillion snapper) would get bit instantly. The two fillets of any given baitfish attached to the head, without the backbone and dorsal fins are just a little too much to resist for the big meat-eaters. Granted, it’s also big shark candy, but as Popeye would say, “You pays your money, you takes your chances.” Butterflying a bait is very simple. Anyone can go out and catch a pile of grunts, pinkies and seabass with small cut bait, but it’s no coincidence that the people who specifically go fishing for grouper are the ones that come home with the “brown fish” in the box. Don’t hesitate to butterfly a snapper or anything else you thought was once too large for bait. On the bottom, the smaller fish will hammer away at the two larger fillets, and out of nowhere a big gag
or red grouper will finish it off. A 1 ½-pound beeliner, pinkie or Spanish mackerel is the perfect candidate for this job. When you feel the little ones banging on it, sit tight and don’t set the hook. Wait for the big bite; there will be no question when it gets eaten instead of pecked at. Big butterflied mullet, spots and croakers are extremely effective inshore and nearshore for red or black drum. In freshwater, a butterflied bream, perch, crappie or other panfish is perfect for big catfish. To butterfly a bait, start at the tail and fillet each side up to just behind the head and out the gut area. Then grab the tail and break the backbone out just behind the head.
