Boaters and anglers up and down the east coast know there’s an important season between the holidays and spring: Boat Show Season! Timed perfectly to gear-up for some of the best fishing of the year, the National Marine Manufacturers Association’s (NMMA) line-up of premier boating and outdoors shows are the venues where shoppers and dreamers alike can peruse the latest the industry has to offer. s the holidays approach and temperatures drop, many will feel the need to scratch that fishing itch. There is no better place to catch your next trophy this winter than down in sunny south Florida. If it’s monster offshore pelagics you seek, winter offers some of our best fishing. Take your boat or book a charter out of Stuart, Fla.—aka “The Sailfish Capital of the World”—and you are sure to land a sailfish, a bucket list fish for many. Mahi, cobia, kingfish and wahoo will also be biting. Our average January high of 74 degrees will also quickly quench your thirst for warmer weather.
North of Palm Beach, we do a lot of trolling, and south you’ll find live baiting very popular, so don’t forget your sabiki rod. No boat? No problem. We have multiple beach-access points where you can catch your fill of Pompano, whiting, bluefish, snook and more, maybe even a permit or bonefish. In Martin County, check out Stuart Beach, Hobe Sound Beach and Tiger Shores. Excellent jetties and piers include Juno Pier, Ft. Pierce Inlet and Sebastian Inlet, where I recently limited out on redfish one day and caught an inshore slam the next! Fishing off the beach, a “pompano rig” will catch a ton of species and even cut bait on the bottom with a pyramid sinker will work. For lures, I like topwaters in the morning and after that I throw lipped crankbaits and paddletail swimbaits. Regarding inshore saltwater, I love fishing from the Saint Lucie Inlet north to Ft. Pierce. Under the docks and along the mangroves you will find snook, redfish and trout, as well as flounder and drum in deeper holes and channels. If you can’t find any mullet to net, a simple live shrimp and a bobber will catch everything and anything. If you do not have a boat, walk the shoreline for some incredible wade fishing. I caught my first snook wading the docks in Ft. Pierce many years ago. Don’t worry, I didn’t forget about you bass guys! Our incredible bass fishing this time of year starts with the largemouth spawn and plenty of crappie on Lake Okeechobee. I also love Camp Mack in Lake Wales, Fla. Mix up your freshwater game with abundant exotic species fisheries featuring clownknife fish, peacock bass, hybrid bass and even the bullseye snakehead. You will catch exotics in any of the Lake Clarke, Lake Osborne or Lake Ida chains in Palm Beach County. It is a month that has the potential to yield some of our most sought after targets, Sea Ducks and wintering Striped Bass. Sportsmen who are willing to brave December’s temperatures on the Chesapeake Bay have the opportunity to harvest Sea Ducks in the special Sea Duck Zones. Aboard The Marylander we have hunters elect to gun as a group on our anchored vessel or use our lay down boats. To help brave the chill of the winter weather, The Marylander’s cabin is equipped with heat and generator. This can be a treat for hunters on the Chesapeake Bay who want to warm up, have a hot meal, and enjoy the comradery. Lay down boats mirror the golden era of hunting on the Chesapeake Bay where hunters would choose to use sneak boxes to feed their families and villages on the Eastern Shore and surrounding areas for market hunting. They are small vessels that have a low profile allowing our hunters to harvest their ducks up close and personal just above the water. Our hunters function as a team and rotate during this activity. One group of hunters will actively hunt while the rest of their friends and family will assist in retrieving there harvest or partake in comradery. We choose to use these vessels on weather permitting days and are an experience of a lifetime for even the avid waterfowl hunter. For those non hunters or those that share our passion of hunting or fishing, the long awaited wintering Striped Bass can be an enjoyable target. Typically during this season, we have had our best success on days that are unseasonably warm and calm. It creates an active environment for fish basking in the winter sun, ready to feed on our baits.
It is an awesome sight to see a fellow hunter harvest waterfowl on the Chesapeake Bay or a wintering Striped Bass. Whatever your activity is, if not both, be mindful of the weather, your environment, and your safety as a hunter or fellow fishermen. We elect to share in these undertakings as a sport and to create memorable and enjoyable experiences with friends or family that will last a lifetime no matter the harvest. It is the opportunity to do so that is most rewarding whether you choose to Blast or Cast.

Trolling or jigging are methods used by anglers to target Striped Bass along the main stem of the Chesapeake Bay in December. Both methods can be effective and can be rewarding for anglers. In years past, the often sought after Trophy Striped Bass was an opportunity that anglers were able to seek. Whether this improves this season, time will tell, but enjoying a day on the Chesapeake Bay is still our goal no matter the size of our catch.

December Potomac River Fishing Forecast By Thomas Raines
With cold temperatures becoming the norm we can expect to see the river change a good bit throughout the month. The most productive and consistent bite this time of year will be catfish, particularly the invasive blue cats. These fish can be found during the colder months suspended when heavily feeding, or hugging the bottom other times. Cut bait will always produce good sized catfish any time of year but this is a great time to have some fun with some bigger class fish. The bass fishing will continue to slow down throughout the month. Anglers will likely still be finding bass near warm water discharges using a variety of baitfish imitations. December is also a very dangerous month on the river. We could see ice begin to form this month in some places along the river so extra caution will need to be taken if you decide to make that last frostbite trip on the river this December!

A profile of Professional Angler Michelle Armstrong
You may have noticed the name Michelle Armstrong within the pages of The Angler Magazine over the years. Not only is she an outdoor writer, but she’s also a professional bass angler from North Carolina. Among her other “faces”, she is a wife, mother of two, a manicurist and owner of The Nail Therapist, nail salon. She admits it’s an odd combination but explains with a smile, “It’s a good balance”. She started her career in competitive bass fishing around 1993, when she competed, along with husband Troy, in national couples’ trails amassing nearly 30 top 20 finishes and four consecutive national championships. In 1999 they acquired their first sponsor and were placed on the Bass Pro Shops Pro staff team. Michelle remains on the Pro Staff today as the only female on the team. You can catch her teaching in store seminars several times a year. In 2005, when Women’s Bassmaster hosted its inaugural tournament, Michelle was one of 100 female anglers in the country to participate in the “Pro” division until it disbanded in 2009. Though she stepped away from the national circuit, she continued to compete at a local level. During this time she achieved the Big Bass Bash Ladies Champion 2016 at Lake Randleman and 2017 at Lake Norman. In 2018 she and her husband was awarded the Adam and Eve couples Tournament Anglers of the Year. Michelle has a deep respect for law enforcement and the military. She often volunteers to help law enforcement officers teach kids how to fish. She
also works closely with Operation North State, an organization that allows wounded and disabled veterans to compete in tournaments. This year (2019) with the support of a few new sponsors, Michelle decided to once again compete at a national level. Along with long time sponsor Bass Pro Shops, she added Powell Rods, Caraway Creek, Brains Crankbaits and The Angler Magazine to her support team. She joined the LBAA (Ladies Bass Angler Association). This was her rookie season with this tournament trail. Michelle traveled all over the United States competing with some of the best female anglers in the country. She had a consistent year finishing top 8 in every tournament. She qualified for the championship and by the end of her season, Michelle was named 2019 Rookie of the Year and ended her year 3rd highest ranking female in the country. Also this year Michelle was able to compete locally, and again earned the Big Bass Bash Ladies Champion on Lake Norman and High Rock Lake. Though women are strong in the sport of fishing, they still only make up about 33% of the participants. “We haven’t fully been recognized for our marketing potential. Winter Fishing Gear Maintenance By Thomas Raines
Winter provides a good time for many of us to get caught up on a lot of gear maintenance we might have missed out on during the busy fishing season.
The first thing I address in the winter are my reels. I don’t like to let my reels sit very long with the dirt accumulated over a season of use. To clean my reels, I will disassemble them and use reel cleaner, grease and oil to get them performing good as new again. I typically put new line on my reels closer to the spring to avoid giving my line a memory from sitting all winter. Rod maintenance is another thing overlooked throughout the entire year, not only in the midst of winter. Cleaning the eyes on your rod and checking for scratches in the guides can prolong the life of your line and prevent you from breaking off fish when you’re dealing with a small scratch inside of your guide. Moving on to tackle, I will go through all of my baits and replace/sharpen all of my hooks. In some cases, I will add new terminal tackle as needed such as split rings. The last thing I make sure to always do is to organize before the spring arrives. The most important thing sometimes on a boat fishing is how quickly you can grab that lure out of your box and get it in front of the fish, so this is a step I never skip. When the winter boredom and cabin fever hit you this December, hunker down and start prepping for spring to maintain some sanity, it’s going to be a long one!

In late October, we had rockfish, trout, and perch eager to take lures of trollers and casters. The stripers are in the bay were breaking on occasion attracting birds, but most anglers found them on their fish finders and jigging both metal and bucktail jigs. The undersized fish were on the surface, the big fish were on the bottom under the top water thrashers. Shore fishermen prowling the rocks and beaches around Cedar Point found eager stripers taking bucktails, sassy shads, swimming plugs, and Hard Head Custom Baits popper rigs. There were great catches of rockfish made by lure casters working structure all around the mouth of the Patuxent, the Potomac, and creek entrances. Shallow water trollers and lure casters caught rockfish all up and down the Patuxent and Potomac.
Mary’s River. The trout took metal jigs with shiny green, and chartreuse being popular colors. White bucktails with sparkly green curly tail grubs were excellent performers as well. There were plenty of stripers in the mix, mostly undersized, but a hefty 28 incher showed up from time to time. There were trout just north of the Targets below Cedar Point. A big red drum near 50 pounds was caught at buoy 72. The big red represents the last of these big fish that are leaving for the Atlantic to spend the winter off Cape Hatteras. My forecast of declining perch activity was blown out of the water as tide levels returned to normal and the perch were plentiful and hungry. The perch in the photo were caught in the afternoon and evening; the closer the sunset the better the bite.
Fresh water fishing continued to be excellent for Speckled trout were schooled up in the Potomac bass, bluegill and crappie. in fifty feet of water near the mouth of the St.

State Record Set with Tripletail Caught in Atlantic Ocean Wicomico County Angler Holds First Record for Species Angler Don Whittington of Bivalve reeled in the state’s first-ever record tripletail off the coast of Ocean City. The 11-pound, 25.25-inch long fish was caught Oct.19 near Baltimore Canyon in the Atlantic Ocean. After about two hours fishing from his son’s boat for tuna and common dolphin, Whittington saw something unusual in the water. “We knew what it was – we’ve seen small ones all summer but after I pulled that one in I was like, ‘wow,’” Whittington said. The tripletail can be found from the tropical waters of Florida upward to southern New England in the summer months. Staff of Bahia Marina in Ocean City certified the tripletail’s weight. A Maryland Department of Natural Resources biologist certified the species, and the state for the first time recognized the triple tail in its Atlantic Division for state records. “While tripletails aren’t too unusual off the coast of Maryland, the size of this one really creates a great benchmark for a new record catch,” Recreational Fishing and Outreach Coordinator Erik Zlokovitz said. The department maintains state records for sport fish in four divisions – Atlantic, Chesapeake, Nontidal and Invasive – and awards plaques to anglers who achieve record catches. Fish caught from privately owned, fee-fishing waters are ineligible for consideration. Anglers who think they have a potential record catch should download and fill out a state record application and call 443-569-1381 or 410-2608325. The department suggests fish be immersed in ice water to preserve weight until it can be checked, confirmed, and certified.

Ocean City Angler Catches Record Gray Triggerfish Maryland State Record Stood for Five Years Ocean City resident Mike Glyphis set a new Maryland state record for gray triggerfish. Glyphis caught the 5.6-pound fish Oct. 30 while fishing 16 miles offshore in the Atlantic Ocean. Glyphis said at first he thought his line was snagged on debris. But after a few tugs on his line, he says “the thing took off.” After a few minutes of fighting the fish, the veteran angler pulled up the gray triggerfish. “This was something I never expected.” The catch broke a record held almost exactly five years by another Ocean City resident, Wayne Gower, who caught his 5.2-pound triggerfish Oct. 31, 2014. Staff at Martin Fish Co. in Ocean City certified the new record weight. A Maryland Department of Natural Resources biologist certified the species.
