In The Sailfish Capital of the World By Nick Carter

apt. Scott Fawcett didn’t hesitate when asked to make a prediction about sailfish season off Florida’s Treasure Coast. His outlook is extremely bullish. “This is going to be one of the best sailfish seasons we’ve had in a long time,” he said. “By the middle of December, I think we’re going to see the best sailfishing we’ve had in the last 10 years.” Fawcett’s optimism is based on a number of factors he’s followed for more than three decades fishing Florida’s Atlantic Coast. December and January is the historic peak season from Vero south to Palm Beach, Fla. The bite is heavily influenced by winter fronts and the proximity of the Gulf Stream, and everyone is eagerly awaiting strong northeast winds to usher sailfish south to their wintering grounds and closer to shore. Closer to shore isn’t far out of Stuart, Fla., where Fawcett’s Off the Chain fishing charters is based. In an area known as the “Sailfish Capital of the World,” it’s typically a short 8-mile ride in his 4 NATIONAL

32’ Contender “Off The Chain” to reach the color edges and temperature breaks where sailfish hunt. In November, Fawcett’s attention was tuned to fishing reports some 600 miles to the north off the coast of North Carolina. “We had a phenomenal sailfish summer,” he said, speaking of the action that usually goes down from April to June or July most years. “It seems like that body of fish disappeared offshore for a while and then showed up off Morehead City. Last time that happened, we had a fantastic season. I expect to see good numbers of sailfish in December.” With the relatively flat bottom out of Stuart, blind trolling to cover water along the temperature breaks, color edges and reef lines is the preferred tactic. Fawcett pulls a dredge, an umbrella rig of some 30 or 40 baits and lures, to locate and draw in fish. “You’ll see them come up behind the teaser,” Fawcett said. “Then you’ll put your hook baits in front of the fish.”

It’s up to the anglers to manipulate those “hook baits”—usually ballyhoo on a circle hook— in front of the fish. “On a good day, expect five or six sailfish bites and the same amount of dolphin bites and then some bonito or a big kingfish mixed in,” Fawcett said. “Occasionally, we’ll also get a blackfin or a big wahoo while trolling or kite fishing.” Kite fishing out of Stuart requires the right conditions. Sometimes when Fawcett finds a good current rip or color change, he’ll drop the trolling motor and deploy kites and live baits. Forecast for Lake Norman By: Captain Craig Price

To state the obvious, not much has happened in 2020 in just about any aspect of our lives as in previous years. In keeping with the “new normal” concept that we hear so much about, the calendar for the beginning of the 2020 winter bite has been pushed to late fall-early winter, i.e. late November or early December. This pattern has been developing for a number of years. Whether it’s man-made due to global warming, or a natural cycle, or a combination of both, there’s not much disputing that in the fishing world in central NC, everything is running about a month behind these days. Whenever the winter feed finally starts, December has always been primetime for hybrids, stripers, and other predatory gamefish. Plus, there’s Christmas at months end which is a great time to acquire more tackle and gear! On Lake Norman, water temperatures should be close to ideal (50-55⁰ F), and large schools of forage, primarily small-medium size herring, threadfin shad, and alewives form in major drainages above and below the Hwy 150 bridge. Depending on actual water temps and other conditions (wind, light, etc.) the bait can be found in creek mouths; midway back along the creek channels; and sometimes back close to the mudflats where the creeks enter the lake. Sea birds typically have arrived by December, and are excellent indicators of where concentrations of bait and gamefish are on any given day. In the cool water, schools of hybrids, stripers, spotted bass, and white perch roam freely throughout the water column. Surface feeding, and surface catching, opportunities can take place anytime, especially on low light days. Catfish are often below this activity, especially around humps and ledges near points or flats.

successful here in winter is the use of Gulp Alive swimming mullets. I fish them on lead jig heads, for trolling or casting. The curly tail design has a great swimming action, plus the profile and length are ideal for “matching the hatch” at Lake Norman. White or chartreuse are the only colors I carry. I vary my presentation by changing jig head colors if needed. The integral scent is an added attractant. Other paddle tail or curly tail swim baits are also effective, so don’t hesitate to try different designs. What I call my “Christmas tree A-rig” is a 2 tier, nine drop Shane’s Baits setup with 1/16 or 1/8 oz. red jig heads and chartreuse swimming mullets. It’s pretty gaudy, but some of my very best creels, both number and size-wise, have come from this display. On Norman, hybrids, stripers, bass, and perch all attack this offering. No matter your preference, there’s really no excuse to miss these early winter opportunities. Get your foul weather gear out, choose your weapons, and hit the water for some of the year’s best catching. Fish On!

The methods for catching winter gamefish are numerous. I’m an old (longtime, not age!) live bait fishermen and live shad, herring, or even store-bought trout or shiners are effective. They can be fished on free lines or weighted lines to reach the desired depth. I use Carolina rigs with 1/0-3/0 circle hooks, but j-hooks and trebles are still used. You might consider fishing barbless if you plan to release your catch alive and healthy. Since the introduction of blueback herring into Lake Norman, the action is often found in open water along deep creek channels, and more so along the river channel as winter progresses. I especially like to work the initial depth transition from the deep channel/ flood plain to the shallower areas approaching the bank. These transition zones are easily identified on a topo map because the flood plain contains very few contour lines and the decreasing depths heading towards the bank are indicated by an increasing number of contour lines. As a live bait striper angler, it took me quite some time to embrace trolling artificials (A-rigs, umbrella rigs, tandem bucktail rigs, crankbaits, etc.), but the open water activity in winter is a great time to employ this technique, simply because you can cover more water while tracking the fast-moving action. Forecast for Lake Wylie By: Phillip Rizzitello

Water temperature is currently dropping but that’s not always a bad thing. The fish are still there and still have to eat. Currently I’m finding the bite a little slow in the morning until the sun has been up for an hour or so. Bait can be found almost anywhere around the lake and has been easily found on the surface during the afternoon, early evening hours.

Crappie are biting best on live minnows. They can be caught on jigs but minnows seem to produce better. I don’t have a preferred jig, but whatever it is, I always have some sort of chartreuse or white in it. Again though, live bait is king. I also fish about mid water column or just about where I am marking them as you will always want to fish above them not below them.

Bass are chasing schools of shad and minnows, so I choose a lure that mimics this bait in size and color. With the water temperature being lower slow your retrieval down as the fish won’t be as active as warmer weather. Play with different speeds until you find what they are comfortable with. One of my favorite things to do is catch them on ultra light rods on light tackle. It makes for a very fun fight.

This is a great time of the year to get out and avoid all the boat traffic, enjoy the mild day and just enjoy the changing weather. The quality of fish will surprise a lot of people this time of year. Just remember, despite the temperature or time of year, you cannot catch them from the couch. So put the cell phone down and go outside and enjoy mother nature!

Catfish can be caught several ways depending on species you prefer. But keep in mind, this is a general rule of thumb as there is always exceptions. For flatheads, my go to bait is live bluegill, blue cats is cut perch and Channel cats cut shad or some sort of stink/ punch bait. I fish almost exclusively on the bottom or just off the bottom. For channels and flat heads, I anchor up, for blues you’ll find me drifting or trolling.

The Science Line: Does Bait Size Matter When Live Bait Fishing? By: Jake Bussolini

In most of my writings I have ignored the issue of live bait size as a general concern to anglers. Over the years I have felt that I would have to make due with whatever size was available at my bait shop. This year, with the virus problems, I was forced to start thinking about the bait size issue. After years of simply picking out whatever a medium size minnow was available in the tank, this summer some baits became very scarce and for a short period there simply were none available. Even now the shortage still exists with local suppliers delivering only once a week, so anglers who use live bait have to actually plan their fishing trips based on bait delivery dates. I kind of always had the opinion that during the very hot and very cold seasons where water temperatures were at their extremes, large bait was better because the fish were limiting the energy that they exerted chasing after food and therefore they would pass up a small parcel of food and expend energy chasing large ones. When the stripers were in Lake Norman, and we fished actively for them during the cold months, larger baits seemed to be in favor. When the stripers disappeared, the thought was that for the bass, it was big bait for bigger fish. I don’t think that anglers stayed awake at night thinking about this issue, there seemed better things to occupy our minds.

In recent days, I have begun to think seriously about this issue as live bait again became scarce. On a few recent days of fishing I noticed that the medium shiners that I normally buy were getting much smaller, nearly as small as crappie minnows. As the hours passed on my fishing trips, the small baits became the only ones remaining in my bait tank so I had no choice but to use them. Guess what? We started crushing the fish, not only catching bass but also crappie, hybrids and catfish and perch. To my amazement, some of the bass caught on the small minnows were monsters like this 5 plus pounder boated by Jay Lyle on Nov 1. Jay was swinging for the fences that day because within an hour he had boated a hybrid, two crappie, two channel catfish five perch and at least ten spotted bass, all using very small shiners. The water temperature was in the high 60’s so it was nowhere near a critical temperature, so it seems that the fish actually liked the small bait fish better than the larger ones that we had used for a couple hours earlier in the day. Now I’ll have to start tracking bait size against my catches to collect sufficient data to prove that small bait can indeed catch big fish. Take Me Fishing The Joy of Sharing the Sport By: Ryan Wilson

I am fishing a lot less this year. It’s an unavoidable repercussion of some major changes that my family has undertaken in the past few months. Part of the reason for my absence from the water is that I took a new job as a career firefighter. The associated shift schedule and the fact that I still have The Shop and my part time Fire job, naturally mean that my “go play outside” time is going to be limited. Even more significant than my new job however, we welcomed a baby girl into the family in July. Fatherhood has its obvious implications on one’s time, but I think even more importantly, it shuffles one’s priorities. Especially with my new crazy hours, my family time has become non-negotiable. Like any working parent, I’m going to be forced to miss things, so it’s that much more vital to me that I make the most of the time not spent at The Shop or the firehouse. This year, that has meant my time on the water, in a treestand and staring out over a couple dozen plastic ducks, was on the chopping block. However, that my dusty fly rods are being caused by some profoundly good reasons, does not mean that I don’t miss it. I can be both a good dad and an enthusiastic employee, and concurrently miss like hell my outdoors time. Compound the fact, that it seems like everyone I talk to is catching fish or shooting a deer right now. When I see your trophy pics, I become an awkward tween scrolling though the perfect lives of Instagram stars – “Why can’t that be me?!” I lament. As of this writing, I am genuinely considering tying up a few acorn patterns and casting to the squirrels in the backyard – they’re no more skittish than wild brookies and there is not a specific injunction against it in my HOA guidelines (yet). What is it that I really miss? Is it the fish? The scenery? The solitude? Yes, obviously yes to all of those things. I also really miss the teaching. As a guide, I get to share my knowledge and passion for the outdoors with newcomers to that world. Guiding someone through those experiences for the first time and witnessing them genuinely appreciate something that I might otherwise take for granted, is an absolute treasure. The value of seeing that excitement take root in someone and growing our brother & sisterhood of sportsmen on an individual basis, is difficult to quantify.

Especially as a new parent, the importance of maintaining and expanding outdoor opportunities has been magnified this year. If 2020 has taught us anything, it’s that every person needs to find a way to create balance and peace in his or her own soul. My sincere belief is that much of the anger, fear and general angst in this world would be alleviated if someone would just take these folks fishing for a few hours. I believe that for a lot of people, time in the outdoors is the best way to reset one’s temperature and not enough of us realize it. If you’re in a position to do it, introduce someone to the outdoors. You don’t have to have a lot of knowledge to share what you love. Just make a genuine effort and keep it light and fun. Bring them by your local fly shop for flies and advice. Realize that while the fish are not unimportant, the real goal is connecting with nature and with a part of yourself. Except when the stars align just right, I probably won’t be on the water with you much this year, but there’s a good chance that someone who I taught how to fish will be. Knowing that, makes missing out a bit easier.

2020 All Wrapped Up By: Vinny “The Commish” Ferreri

I can’t believe it, but the 2020 regular season is over. Many clubs across the nation have struggled through the pandemic, and had to cancel events, and watch their participation drop dramatically. From grassroots to highlevel clubs. We here at Queen City Kayak Bass Fishing were prepared and moved things around, and made it all work. TourneyX.com and Dwayne Walley were a huge part of this, and so were you! The willingness to go virtual and wait for a shipped plaque, or meet up for the plaques, was huge. We never stopped, and let me tell you, we prevailed. We have had major growth again this season, the 6th season in a row! We ended our 2020, #QC1100, season 6 with over 300 DIFFERENT anglers participating in our events. We had 140 anglers who chose to pay the OPTIONAL membership, and we paid out over $60,000. Those are huge numbers for a grass roots kayak trail. We had an average of 93 anglers a month at our LIVE events. 93!!! Let that sink in for a second. We fished 9 trail events, and a Charity event, not counting the side stuff we did: Two brackets, Sundays, a Nick run night event, and so on. At the end of the day, anglers were fishing for a spot in the top 20 for a chance to win the Tournament of Champions, along with an opportunity to win The Angler Magazine Charlotte NC Angler of the year award. This AOY award is a prestigious award in QCKBF, and we have never had a repeat winner, until this season. Only five individuals can say they have held the AOY trophy: Vinny Ferreri, Saturday Mel, Tim Sabella, Matt Hawj, and Mr. Two Time Chris Goodwin. Chris wrapped up his second AOY title this year on Lake James. That is extremely impressive in a club this large, with this many top-notch anglers. Congratulations, Chris.

Mike Hicks was able to grab 3rd and big bass and went home with $500 cash and over $500 in prizes as well. Matt Hawj took home 2nd place worth $1500 cash, and $1000 in prizes. Our two time AOY Chris Goodwin took home the big title and won his first QCKBF championship. He earned $3000 cash and over $1000 in prizes as well. With this event over, the planning and preparation for 2021 is in full speed. I have solidified next seasons sponsors, and the schedule is ready!!! BLUE CAT CRUSHES GEORGIA RECORD

Florida man fishing Georgia’s Chattahoochee River caught a 110-pound, 6-ounce blue catfish Oct. 17. The monster blue cat crushed the existing state record by more than 17 pounds. Tim Trone, of Havana, Fla., was fishing the Chatt Kat tournament out of Florence Marina on the upper end of Lake Eufaula when he caught the monster fish. He had run way up the river south of Columbus, Ga., and dropped baits in about 50 feet of water when the giant catfish picked up a piece of cut bream Trone was using for bait. Surprisingly, the fish didn’t put up much of a fight. “I reeled it up like a 100-pound log,” Trone told a reporter from the Tallahassee Democrat. “It was just a little bump. It took about three minutes to reel it in.” Trone’s blue catfish bested the previous record of 93 pounds, which has stood since 2017. That fish was caught on the Altamaha River in southeast Georgia. The current IGFA all-tackle world record weighed 143 pounds. It was caught on Virginia’s Kerr Lake.
