t’s snook season in Florida, and despite a closure to harvest for much of the state’s west coast, the next couple months offer great action in the world’s best location to target the state’s most iconic inshore/ nearshore gamefish. Snook strike aggressively, fight hard and grow large—into the 20and 30-pound range of true slob snook. The Florida state record weighed 45.75 pounds. It was caught by Heather Lynn Conners near Sebastian in 2015. But even the slot fish—those in the 28- to 33-inch range you’re allowed to keep one of—will test your gear. It’s one of the most explosive and exciting gamefish on the planet. Snook are extremely temperature sensitive, and tactics vary according to the season. From the beaches and nearshore, where they spend their summers, they will move over the next few months seeking warmer water in sheltered winter haunts. First, you’ll find them in deep water adjacent to the shallow flats. Then, driven by cooling sea temps, they’ll push all the way up into the creeks and rivers, residential canals, warm water discharge from power plants, upper estuaries, and anywhere they can find suitable water conditions. The harsher the winter, the more pronounced the move. Fall through winter is the time when big, line-snapping snook will hunker down in areas that might seem highly unlikely to the uninformed. With the mild winters of the last decade, much has been made of the northward spread of snook. A tropical species, they historically thrived only on the southern coasts of Florida, up to about to about Sebastian in the Atlantic and Tampa in the Gulf. However, in recent years, snook have set up shop farther north, in areas that would have been unheard of a decade ago. These days, it’s possible to target snook at Homosassa and farther north along the Nature Coast of the Gulf and up toward Jacksonville in the Atlantic. They have also shown up much farther north. This summer, Coastal Angler Magazine reported on a juvenile snook caught in a cast net way up in Winyah Bay, South Carolina. First timers seeking to do battle with snook should hire a captain. Along with being big and strong, large female snook are notoriously smart and usually require specialized tackle, techniques and a good deal of patience. Their tendency to hole up in the structure of mangroves, rocks and bridge and pier pilings makes break-offs common, and the expertise of a good guide increases your chances of actually landing one. The good news is, snook have been relatively unmolested by anglers during the closed season of the last three months. Now is as good a time as any to fool a big cow nosed into the current under some residential canal dock. They feed best in low light of the early mornings and late evenings when there’s a rising or falling tide. The stronger tides around the new and full moons are optimal for catching them. Keep that in mind when booking your trip to Florida’s snook fisheries, and you could find yourself experiencing the fishing trip of a lifetime.

GOLDEN CRAPPIE CAUGHT IN ARKANSAS

avid Allen Sisson, of Magnolia, Arkansas, caught a fish on July 27 that few anglers have ever seen or even heard of: a golden crappie. Sisson was vertical jigging a brushpile at the 3,000-acre Columbia County, Ark. water supply reservoir when he caught the unusual fish. “The pictures still don’t do it justice,” Sisson said. “It was amazing, and I just feel blessed to have caught it.” Arkansas Game and Fish Commission District Fisheries Supervisor and avid crappie angler Andy Yung also was excited to hear about the catch. “I had never seen a golden crappie in my life,” Yung said. “I’ve read about them, but it’s something you just never see in the wild.” Yung explained the gold coloration is caused by a genetic mutation called Xanthism, similar to what causes a rare animal to be an albino or the black pigmentation in some extremely rare cases of deer and other animals. Xanthic crappie not only are lottery-drawing rare, but their coloring can hinder their ability to survive. These sorts of animals usually stand out from the others and are typically eaten by predators long before they reach maturity. Sisson said his golden catch didn’t end up in a frying pan, but has been taken to a taxidermist in Magnolia to mount.

his summer has definitely been a hot one, and the Dog Days are just beginning. Charleston’s September Fishing Forecast

eptember is a month of transition in Charleston. The very hot and humid days of summer will continue. However, by the end of the month, cooler mornings and shorter days start to replace the 90 degree days. Because of this, fishing will undergo several changes. This will be the last month to target all the summer migrating species of fish that come north in the summer and move south for the winter. As the first cool fronts of the year occur, the water will begin to cool. Warm water fish like Spanish mackerel, ladyfish, jacks, tarpon and sharks will be preparing to head south for the winter. This might seem early but fishermen must remember that these fish don’t like water temperatures much below 80 degrees. One thing is for sure, they need to eat a lot to store up energy for the long journey down the coast. These fish may be found near the inlets and right off the beach all up and down our coast line. When we get an approaching front, the fish will be very aggressive in feeding, often on the surface. You might see birds working above a school of Spanish mackerel as they move out of the harbor or down the beach. If the larger mullet are moving south you could see tarpon or sharks sky rocketing out of the water chasing after them. This will be the last, and often the best chance of the summer, to catch one of these migrating species. The best fishing of the year will begin this month for the inshore species. The resident fish like redfish, sea trout and flounder are also responding to this seasonal transition. The inshore water temperature will begin dropping with the shorter days and cooler mornings. The summer months will have provided mature shrimp and mullet which
are the perfect size for a hardy meal. Since some of the bait will not be around much longer, local fish will be feeding more often and for longer stretches of the day. The early morning top water bite will be in full swing. Working with favorite bait along the grassy edges or current rips early in the morning will provide some explosive strikes. Because there are so many shrimp in the water, both fish and fishermen will be able to take advantage of their cravings for shrimp. A DOA shrimp under a cork is hard to beat this time of the year. By allowing the cork to drift along the grass or over oyster bars, fishermen will be able to catch almost any of the inshore species. The redfish will still be feeding on crabs in the grass this month, providing us an opportunity to catch them. A DOA shrimp, crab imitation, or fly may be used in order to take advantage of these tailing tides to catch trophy reds in the grass. Mt. Pleasant Pier September Fishing Forecast
S
eptember should be a great month for pier fishing especially if we can get Mother Nature to turn down the thermostat and cool the water off a little. As the oppressive August temperatures fade we expect to see fishing pick up around the pier. Even with the heat we still saw a number of trout, flounder, redfish, and sheepshead caught last month. The largest Jiggin Jerry’s 6.10 lbs Sheepshead sheepshead weighed in at 6 pounds 10 ounces indicating some of the bigger ones may be showing up at the pier a little earlier than usual. One of the most common questions received in the shop is was anything caught today? There are fish caught every day from the pier, but the sizes and species are as varied as the conditions. When fishing in a boat and the fish aren’t biting it’s relatively easy to pick up and try another spot. Pier fishermen may be somewhat limited with the area in which they can fish, yet there are still a variety of ways to maximize the opportunities. We see pier fishermen all the time that only fish “their spot” with a particular setup. On days when that’s not working it can be frustrating and send anglers home early. It’s a good idea to have several bait and rig options ready to go. Bottom rigs are very common and can be productive; however, if the crabs are thick or the nuisance fish are schooled up you can go through a lot of bait in a very short period of time without much success. One option to consider is to use live shrimp, minnows, or mullet under a poppin’ cork. It’s a deadly effective way to catch sea trout, red drum, and even flounder. Large red drum specimens can be caught with regularity throughout September. The best bet to land one is to target the edge of the marsh grass during high tide. Large “bull” reds may prefer mullet, live or cut, but an overlooked bait that works great is using a quarter of a blue crab. So when you’re bottom fishing and the crabs are thick it might be time to grab an inexpensive crab net from the River Watch Café and Gift Shop on the pier and get even. For those anglers looking to test their skills in a fishing tournament don’t miss the Cast Off Fishing Finale October 5. Maintenance For Your Dock & Boat-lift
M
aintenance is especially crucial as a dock ages, many older docks were assembled using galvanized nails that rust apart over time. This leaves the dock barely holding together, and caused a lot of the damage from our recent tropical
storms. Todays’ standard is stainless steel nails for the dock framing and stainless steel screws for the decking. Older docks can be upgraded for relatively low cost by adding stainless fasteners to ensure structural integrity. Dock pilings should be scraped and inspected for rot or wood boring worms every few years. This is accomplished using a short handle flat blade shovel to remove the marine growth and is usually done in the summer months when the water is warm. Floating docks are the component that gets the most abuse and have the fastest deterioration time. The floats should get marine growth removed and a visual inspection of the floats, fasteners and mounting boards yearly. Typically done floating in a life jacket in the summer with the same shovel used on the pilings. Top side you should check to ensure the deck boards and cleats are securely fastened and the rub rail is intact and secure. Boat lifts need a yearly inspection- visually check all components for wear, cables for fraying, loose fasteners and grease all wear points. Boat lift cables do have a life span and should be changed out periodically. Cleaning the decking and handrails yearly will help extend the life of your dock. We recommend a light pressure washing to remove bird droppings, algae build up and removal of salt and dirt. Cross bracing under the dock is the second fastest wear component, and is a crucial part of the docks stability. It should be checked for rot, rusted fasteners and to ensure it’s still firmly attached. Marine growth should also be removed. Your dock is a major investment and your pathway to enjoying the water, if you need assistance with maintenance give us a call.

aylight will be getting shorter and with the arrival of Fall hopefully cooler temperatures, and a hot bite. The trout are starting to bunch up in larger groups and are still near creek mouths and shell points and near marsh grass edges. After our second mild winter we are starting to see some larger female trout, and we are finding best results with live bait under popping corks . This year seems to be a banner crop of juvenile redfish, because 10-14” redfish seem to be everywhere, and the larger fish are still holding around structure and best bite has been around low tide. The inshore bite has been really good with lots of variety ( reds, trout, jacks, ladyfish , black drum, flounder , bluefish and sharks, and should only get better with cooler temps and shorter days. Over the next month we should see the breeder bull reds start to stage around inlets and in the surf, also the mullet run should start up. With the mullet run you we see large numbers of : sharks , tarpon and redfish along the front beach. At the reef the spanish mackerel have been thick, and the spadefish have been back on the surface after staying low in the water column for a little while. The crowds should start to thin on the water with the start of deer hunting season, college football and kids back in school, but take advantage because the fishing is only getting better. Tight lines and remember take a kid fishing.

It’s Time to “Fall” Into Red Drum Season
A
ugust was a very hot, humid month in the Lowcountry. The consistent sunny days and high heat raised the water temperatures to an excess of 88 degrees, especially in the shallow flats and shallow tidal creeks, making the conditions harsh for a number of our favorite inshore game fish, like Trout, Flounder and Red Drum. There have been complaints from other fishermen that the populations of Red Drum and Trout have dwindled. Some believe it is due to a lot more inshore anglers hunting out the fish in the shallows and in the flats, but I do not believe this to be the case, especially with the Red Drum. Because of the high water temperatures, it reduces the amount of oxygen in the water in the shallows, and like us staying outside on a hot, sunny day, it reduces our energy levels, causes fatigue and makes it hard for us to breathe in the high humidity. This is the exact same thing that happens to our inshore game fish. So, what you will find is that the Flounder, Trout and Red Drum move to deeper pools and deeper creeks where the water temperatures are lower and the oxygen levels are higher, making it easier for these fish to function and feed. One of the local anglers’ favorite thing to do in the summer months is to target Red Drum, pocketed up in the shallows, including large pools that are left behind after an outgoing tide, but with the circumstances explained above, that made it hard through July and August to find the numbers of Red Drum that they are used to. I personally have found a lot of Red Drum through these summer months targeting deeper creeks and deeper pockets off the surf for Red Drum, and one of the exciting things to see was a lot of pup drum this year, proving there to be a healthy new generation of Red Drum. Now that we have come into September and enter our fall season, we will hopefully start to see some cooler rains and slight temperature drops that will make these Red Drum active again and bring them in the shallows to feed. Between September and October, we will start to see large Red Drum arrive, swimming down our local beaches and entering our harbors, some exceeding 40 inches in length. The trick to target these drum as we enter one of our

favorite inshore fishing seasons is knowing what to use and when to use it and your bait will be the key. Red Drum are a powerful and fast predator, but they have the best of both worlds. They even feed like Catfish, targeting decaying fish and crabs with an ability to smell fresh cut bait in the darkest of water in great distances. These abilities can give you the upper hand when targeting these fish. The Lowcountry is known for its muddy water. It does not allow for great visibility in most cases, so when fishing a dark creek, a muddy flat or a sandy surf, visibility will make the difference between the decision of using live bait or fresh cut bait. If the water is clear and crisp, live Finger Mullet, small live Pinfish, live Croaker or even some silver Perch will work great for Red Drum. On a sunny day, the flash from these fish can be seen for good distances and entice the Red Drum to strike and feed. Where dark, muddy water is concerned, these shiny fish are not as effective. The Red Drum would practically have to be right on top of them to see them, but if you use these same fish and cut them in fresh chunks of bait instead, the Red Drum can smell them within a 30-yard radius, drawing them in to feed. As we move in later into the month of September, we should see some clearer water, making it easier to sight fish for some of these schools of Red Drum, allowing the angler to take advantage of throwing some great artificial lures—artificial shrimp, mullet, paddle tail grubs and curly tail grubs are always successful. Just remember not to throw your lures directly on the fish. This will cause the fish to scatter and startle them. Instead, throw ahead of the fish, anticipating its direction. As the fish approaches, start to twitch your bait as if it panicked when the drum moved closer. In most cases, the drum will strike by a reactive instinct, saying to himself, “Oh you’re not getting away from me!” LOL. I hope this helps everyone to have a great season for Red Drum. Cables, electrical connections, etc. -Buff- sun protection, animosity, make shift bandage or tourniquet. -Contractors Trash Bag(s). Cut and use as makeshift tarp for sun/rain protection or simple poncho. ( I’d keep a rain suit in a waterproof duffel with towels and extra clothes also) -Portable battery pack: can change anything with a USB. Phones, cameras, radios, etc. It seems trivial but a cell phone can be a life saver. Slightly larger than a deck of cards and charges my iPhone 6-7 times. Store in ziplock bag or waterproof box. -Handheld VHF radio. Note: Since VHF relies on “line of sight” to work, it can become useless if your in places like the Everglades where dense mangroves block the signal. Locals in the area often carry 25’ extra of cable and a few zip ties along with a small connector piece to attach the antenna to the end of a pushpole (or branch) to vastly extend the range. Of course your needs might differ but these items have kept me dry, safe, and happy in some wet and desperate times. Happy fishing and safe boating!

t might be the barrier islands of SC, the Everglades, or the endless Louisiana marsh, succeeding on your own requires knowledge, planning and packing. I’ve found if I’m fishing from a boat, the flies and leaders might change for a given area, but the boat bag itself stays the same. Here’s what in the bag… -Sunscreen and lip balm: Find one that you like using and use it often. No one wants to look like a leather purse when they get older. -550 paracord: too many uses to list but an emergency pull start for a smaller outboard comes to mind first. -Toilet Paper: store in ziplock bag. Besides the obvious, it can help build an emergency fire if your stranded on land. -First aid: Emergency Hook Remover, contact Saline solution, Advil, pepto tablets, a roll of gauzes and waterproof tape. -BIC lighter: works even when rusted- keep in ziplock with TP. -Bug Defense: generally just a small can of deet and Skin So Soft or No-Natz is plenty but a mesh head net takes up almost no room and is priceless in many marshes. -Keys: extra keys to the boat and the truck. It’s happened to me too many times. -Cash: Riverfront bars, Marinas, ice. -Hook File: the amount of fishermen I know who don’t sharpen their hooks is mind blowing. It makes a difference, keep em sharp. Helps to clean corroded battery cables in a pinch. -Needle nose pliers: boat repairs or crimping barbs/ cutting shanks on that hook that found your leg. -Few tools: Leatherman, 8-14mm Box wrenches. Find what your motor uses. 80

Lowcountry Kayak Fishing Fall Fishing for Flounder
W
e have finally made it out of the worst of the hot summer months and are beginning to see cooler evenings and soon will see our first cold front which will trigger all the inshore fish to strap on the feedbags and devour all they baitfish they can find before the cold drives them away. It’s this time of year that I love to fish for Flounder; they’re aggressively feeding and congregating in easy to reach areas. As some might remember from the flounder piece I wrote about fishing for them in the summer; Flounder eat a great variety of bait but as they mature they focus more on estuary fishes. One of their favorite meals is the anchovy aka the Glass minnow, though this bait is not easily put on a hook, it is easily replicated with a Zman Slim swimz in “opening night” color. For live bait it is hard to beat a live mud minnow or known by some as flounder candy, this lively bait fish is hardy and can withstand numerous casts before having to be replaced. Another great artificial bait to use during this time of year is the Berkely Gulp swimming mullet in pearl white, put on a 1/8 oz eyestrike jighead it can be a deadly combination for catching Flounder. I’m now going to contradict something that I put in an earlier article about Flounder fishing and that is taking a deliberate pause (count five apple) before setting the hook; when fishing with artificial baits, you should be setting the hook the moment you feel the strike from the fish. The Flounder will pick up the bait as it passes because it is instinctual for an ambush predator like the Flounder to do that, but as it realizes the bait is not the real thing
it will spit it out, wait too long and you will miss the fish. Flounder do not have a strong thumping strike when they come after your bait presentation and often will pick up our bait and swim towards you making it more difficult to detect their strike, for this reason a good spin-casting combo is the ticket for flounder fishing. I would recommend a 7ft medium light or medium rod with fast action coupled with a 2000 series reel, I like to use a Saint Croix Triumph ML 7’ rod with a Shimano Nasci 2500 reel. Line is another consideration, Flounder have good eye sight being ambush predators so if you are a braid user, tying on at least a 3’ flouro leader is a must. The last thing to cover is where do you find them and when? I personally find that I have better success in finding flounder on a falling tide, the water has to be moving. As it gets colder the flounder are coming off the grass lines and sandbars and moving towards ledges and drop offs where they can sit in deeper water and wait for the tide to pull the bait out of the grass and towards them. When you are searching for them do not spend too much time in one spot without a strike, if the flounder are there they will hit your bait, if you fish an area for 15 or more minutes without any hits move on. Tournament Time - 5 Lures to Cover All the Bass Bases
G
igantic yellow rubber spiders and neon blue swimming topwater parrots (yes like the bird) are just a few examples of some of the new school lures available to bass fishermen. With so many products, colors, and styles it can be a daunting task to pick out a bait. Below are some tried and true offerings to up your confidence the next time cold hard cash is on the line… Spinnerbait – Spinnerbaits are simple to use and relatively weedless. Copper color blades for stained water and silver for clearer water. Willow leaf blades create flash and can be worked a little faster. Circular Colorado blades push water and tend to slow the bait down. Simply cast and retrieve around weedlines, ledges, and structure. Ned Rig – Some love it and some can’t stand it but for me, when the bite gets tough, the tough gets NED. This small soft plastic offering doesn’t look like much, but big things can come in small packages. The profile and weight of this finesse presentation is what commands the bite when other offerings refuse to work. Dead-stick on the bottom, bounce, or slowly glide through center of the water column. Not as weedless as other offerings on the list but a top producer in low snag environments. Top Water Frog –You are the puppet master with a frog – get creative. The froggier you make it look the better. Nothing is more exciting than bombing a frog deep into the
lily pads, making it “hop” and seeing an explosion. Weedless Texas rigged or hollow bodied frogs are a great option to skip under shallow docks, underneath overhanding trees, and through pockets in lay downs. Try slowing down the retrieve and downsizing when the bite gets tough. Wacky Rig –A Senko rigged with a small hook running perpendicular to the body doesn’t look like much to you and me but to a bass it is irresistible. The slow fall of these baits and maximum time in the strike zone allow you to pinpoint specific areas. This minimalist approach can fool even the highest pressured fish. Texas Rig – Weedless T-Rigs are perfect for punching through lilly pads and working every side of a cypress tree. I prefer a screw in style bullet weight and an offset hook. Just be sure to match the sizes of hooks to weights to plastics. Worms, Brush Hogs, Craws, Lizards, the plastics list goes on. Remember that space is limited, and a little planning can go a long way. Test out new gear on off days. Remain flexible and do your research. Weather, the Season, and your competition can all play a part in your lure selections. Confidence is key so pick something that you are comfortable with. It may just pay off in the end… . Tips For Autumn Boating
ummer officially ends on Sept. 21, but the next few months are some of the best for Lowcountry boaters. In the fall, the oppressive summer heat gives way to cooler, more enjoyable, air. The light shifts in hue slightly and the colors ashore, of course, begin to change. There’s no better time to gather up the family for an afternoon cruise and picnic, or a visit to your favorite fishing grounds. Of course, every savvy captain knows that a change in season can mean a change in conditions on the water, and will take some steps to avoid being surprised. Because summer swings so effortlessly into fall, it’s easy to overlook some of these important steps that every boater should think about as the days get shorter. 1.Gear check. In the summer, our rivers, bays and inlets are usually full of boaters, and the Coast Guard patrols are frequent. If you get in any trouble when afloat, there’s usually someone near at hand to lend assistance. But as the days grow shorter, there’ll be fewer boats on the water. So make sure your VHF radio is working well before you set out, and charge up your cell phone. If you need to call for help, it’s good to know you’ll be heard! 2.Lights. As the days grow shorter (and in September and October, we lose more than an hour a month sunset can sneak up on you! Make sure your navigation and running lights are in proper working order before you leave the dock. 3.Layers. You probably won’t need oilskins, parkas and wooly hats for autumn boating in the Lowcountry, but bringing along an extra layer of warm clothing is probably a good idea. Sometimes when the sun is low and the wind is up, it can get chilly on the water, and having an extra sweatshirt or jacket on board will make you and your passengers more comfortable. 4.Charts. No, the shoreline doesn’t move around after Sept. 21, but there may be sandbars shifting and other storm-driven changes to some channels, entrances and approaches here and there. Keep your charts updated and remember to ask your fellow captains for any navigational hazards they may have encountered. 5.Weather. Conditions are generally benign in this part of the world in the fall (except of course for the occasional hurricane!) but it’s always a good idea to keep one eye on the weather. Especially if one of those hurricanes or tropical storms is predicted to be closing in. As always, know what’s out there and be prepared for the worst. But do get out and enjoy the season. Folly Beach Pier Report September Fishing Forecast By Joey Crawford
T
his can be a particularly breezy month on the beach but wind will benefit fishing conditions as long as it is fewer than 15 knots. A good wind creates mud-lines in the aquacolored ocean which serve as camouflage for predatory fish. In addition, September is generally your closing chance to target those warm-water predatory species at the pier. If it is anything like last year, the Florida Pompano will be plentiful as they favor Charleston’s 80°+ water. Part of the Jack Family, Pompano exude tropical characteristics of a yellow silver color with a deep forked tail. They are very fast swimmers with small teeth for bottom feeding in the shallow surf. It isn’t uncommon to hook a lot in a short period of time. They run in large schools and will bite if the bait is right. I’ve seen both fresh and frozen shrimp produce successful results. A common set-up is light tackle and rod with a bottom rig using size 1 plain shank hooks. If you’re having trouble setting the hook, try cutting the shrimp into smaller half or third-size pieces. With a bit of good fortune you may hook into the larger 2+ pound Pompano we’ve been seeing off the Folly Pier this year. Ultimately they will migrate south as the Carolina water temperatures drop during fall. Despite their slight fishy taste, Pompano have become a popular dish in the south. Fillets can be prepared in numerous ways including baked, broiled, boiled, steamed, and of course fried. One such famous plate is the Pompano en Papillote from New Orleans. The fillets are baked in a pouch with white wine sauce, shrimp, and crabmeat. TRANSITION FROM SUMMER TO FALL BASS FISHING

W
here I grew up, fishing is a lifestyle. I would fish Southern farm ponds and creeks day-in and day-out every summer, no matter the weather conditions. As I began to get a little older and experienced, I realized that fishing for a big bass as summer comes to a close was a little different than fishing in the cooler temperatures of fall. There’s lots of variables that come into play when figuring out how to catch fish during this time of year. A lot of your success can depend on what type of water you’re fishing. Typically, fish tend to go to deeper depths of water in the summertime. Bass want to stay cool, and the deeper water offers less light penetration. During these months, bass will actually begin to school up on offshore ledges, and if you find one of these schools, you’ll likely have a successful day out on the water. Finding where the fish are located is only half the battle; knowing what baits to throw is also vital. For me, I have more success during the summer with slower presentations like Texas-rigs, football jigs, ned rigs and drop-shot rigs. Once things start to cool off, the fish do the total opposite when it comes to where they can be found. Instead of the fish schooling together, they tend to be spread out throughout a certain area, making the bite more random at times. A lot of the shad that also call these creeks and lakes home seek more shallow water, and the bass often follow them. In the part of the country where I’m from, I notice this transition during September and October when it starts to get a lot cooler out. The baits I throw in the fall also vary from those baits of the summertime. Buzzbaits, topwater walkin’ baits and others that can cover a lot of water are what I usually get bites with. Whether you’re just getting into bass fishing or are an experienced angler, knowing how the fish behave during certain times of year is essential for your success, and it’s not something everyone always thinks about. HYBRID STRIPERS STOCKED IN N.C.’S HYCO LAKE
T
he N.C. Wildlife Resources C om m i s s i on is offering anglers a unique opportunity to catch hybrid striped bass in Hyco Lake with an initial stocking of 37,500 fingerlings. This 3,750-acre lake south of the Virginia border in Person and Caswell counties was pegged by biologists as suitable for a hybrids, or Bodie bass, because of its warm year-round water temperatures, a wide forage base and ample depth for this deep, open-water species. The fish are expected to reach harvestable size within the next year or two. Bodie bass regulations on Hyco will be four fish a day with a 16-inch minimum length. Bodie bass are a cross between striped bass and white bass. They grow larger than white bass and withstand higher water temperatures than striped bass. “Adult Bodie bass are a schooling fish typically found in open water searching for shad or other prey fishes. In Hyco Lake, tilapia may provide an additional food source not found in other reservoirs in the state,” said District 5 Fisheries Biologist Kelsey Lincoln. “This possible predator-and-prey interaction could make for some fun fishing opportunities.” Bodie bass are captured using various angling techniques including trolling, artificial lures and live bait. While Bodie bass do not grow as large as striped bass do, they commonly reach 5 pounds. Next summer, Commission staff will stock additional Bodie bass fingerlings in the lake at a rate between five and 10 fish per acre. Biologists will monitor the population to determine the success of the fishery and to update management recommendations.

ver the last decade, tournament bass fishing has undergone some major changes for young anglers. From high school club teams to officially sanctioned tournament trails, the pursuit has been recognized and is being treated more and more like a traditional high school sport. The best young anglers earn college scholarships for fishing. North Carolina’s Trent Lawson, aka The Fish Nemesis, is a young angler with a dream of bass fishing on the big stage. “I think like a fish,” he said, and it’s that thought process that has given Trent a shot at living his dream. His dad first introduced him to fishing when he was 7 years old. “I didn’t like fishing at all,” Trent recalled. Later, though, he went with friends and realized he had found his passion.
He started fishing every week at a nearby farm pond. Eventually, a family friend introduced him to Lake Norman, north of Charlotte, N.C. From there, Trent knew he wanted to become a professional bass fisherman. He has set the course to make it happen. The bass fishing industry is tough. For most, the dream of fishing professionally is just that, a dream. Trent’s determination and confidence in his ability has kept him forging ahead. Trent’s high school did not have a fishing team, so he joined Patrick County High School’s team less than an hour from his home, but across the state line in Virginia. They welcomed him. Already well into their season, the team had one more qualifying event left. Trent and his teammate qualified for the Bassmasters High School Championship in Virginia and placed sixth in the state championship series. Trent also competes outside of school in other tournament trails. He has amassed at least 20 wins and numerous top-10 finishes. He is sponsored by Fishing Complete, the parent company of some of the industry’s top baits and terminal tackle. He also has a YouTube channel called “The Fish Nemesis,” where you can watch and learn from his fishing techniques. Not only is Trent intelligent at fishing, he is an honor roll student. He understands the difficult road of becoming a pro and values a good education. He needed to find a college with a fishing team. Trent’s dad contacted the fishing coach at Tennessee’s Bethel University to seek advice on scholarships and the fishing team. Bethel University was the first school to recognize bass fishing as an organized sport. The coach asked for Trent’s resume, offered his cell phone number and advised Trent to keep him posted. Trent texted his fishing accomplishments every week. Trent’s perseverance, hard work and excellent grades have resulted in a bass fishing scholarship offer from Bethel University. Trent plans to major in business and marketing. If he doesn’t become a professional angler, he intends to use his knowledge to possibly work in marketing for a bait company or start his own business. Bringing The Dead (Bait) Back To life

n case you don’t already know and do this, here’s a trick that can save a day in the absence of live bait. If you’re going bottom fishing and pinfish, sardines, pogies or the others are hard to find with a cast net or sabiki, hedge your bets by keeping a couple dozen fresh or frozen baits about the diameter of a softball, or larger, in the cooler. Even in freshwater, when live gizzard shad or skipjacks are nowhere to be found, a box of frozen baits can still entice catfish, striped bass and others. Dropping a whole dead bait down will get bites, but if you take a minute to “butterfly” them, these once dead baitfish come back to life in the current. No grouper or big snapper can resist them when presented properly. Grunts pinkies and seabass will hammer at it, and eventually get the hook, but grouper or anything else with a large enough mouth will simply inhale it. I’ve seen times when the bite would shut down, even with live bait, and a fresh butterflied beeliner (vermillion snapper) would get bit instantly. The two fillets of any given baitfish attached to the head, without the backbone and dorsal fins are just a little too much to resist for the big meat-eaters. Granted, it’s also big shark candy, but as Popeye would say, “You pays your money, you takes your chances.” Butterflying a bait is very simple. Anyone can go out and catch a pile of grunts, pinkies and seabass with small cut bait, but it’s no coincidence that the people who specifically go fishing for grouper are the ones that come home with the “brown fish” in the box. Don’t hesitate to butterfly a snapper or anything else you thought was once too large for bait. On the bottom, the smaller fish will hammer away at the two larger fillets, and out of nowhere a big gag
or red grouper will finish it off. A 1 ½-pound beeliner, pinkie or Spanish mackerel is the perfect candidate for this job. When you feel the little ones banging on it, sit tight and don’t set the hook. Wait for the big bite; there will be no question when it gets eaten instead of pecked at. Big butterflied mullet, spots and croakers are extremely effective inshore and nearshore for red or black drum. In freshwater, a butterflied bream, perch, crappie or other panfish is perfect for big catfish. To butterfly a bait, start at the tail and fillet each side up to just behind the head and out the gut area. Then grab the tail and break the backbone out just behind the head.
