ottom fish anglers in the Atlantic from the coast of North Carolina south through the Florida Keys could soon be required to have Photo by Adrian Gray descending devices onboard and available for release of unwanted fish while fishing for snapper and grouper species. The South Atlantic Fishery Management Council approved the measure at its September meeting. If approved by NOAA Fisheries, the requirement will likely go into effect in late 2020. Additionally, the use of non-offset, non-stainless-steel circle hooks could be required. The new requirements are part of a package of “best practices” the council has been considering for the snapper and grouper fishery. It addresses the results of federal research that shows mortality rates of almost 30 and 40 percent for red snapper released by the recreational and commercial sectors, respectively. “The bottom line is that many important fish stocks are showing dead discard estimates that exceed catch (red snapper, black sea bass, gag and black grouper),” read a council meeting summary. “That means the data show that more fish are being released and dying than are able to be kept by fishermen.” The descending-device requirement is intended to increase chances of survival for released fish by decreasing the effects of barotrauma. There’s pretty much one master rule for fishing our lakes in December, and really all winter. That rule is to fish the warmest water you can find. You’re most likely to find the warmest water at the southern end or the bottoms of the lakes. The nicest way I can put it, it’s not the most exciting month. We don’t have the hot holes and such as Lake Norman tends to, so our waters get pretty cold. If I wake up feeling dangerous and decide to go for it, I’ll be looking for schools on the bottom ends of the lake, usually off of big points that gouge way out into the main body of the lake. Most likely I’ll start off the morning trolling jigs. They don’t hit the jigs much this time of year, but it’s more or less just a way to find them. Then I’ll drop down lines on them using medium sized baits, nothing too big, as there’s a lot of small bait in the lake right now and they kind of key in on that. Let’s say four inchish baits. Basically I’m just sitting on the fish, about an hour at a time. If they don’t bite in that hour,

inter provides a good time for many of us to get caught up on a lot of gear maintenance we might have missed out on during the busy fishing season. The first thing that I address in the winter is my reels. I don’t like to let my reels sit very long with the dirt accumulated over a season of use. To clean my reels I will disassemble them and use reel cleaner, grease and oil to get them performing good as new again. I typically put new line on my reels closer to the spring to avoid giving my line a memory from sitting all winter. Rod maintenance is another thing overlooked throughout the entire year, not only in the midst of winter. Cleaning the eyes on your rod and checking for scratches in the guides can prolong the life of your line and prevent you from breaking off fish when you’re dealing with a small scratch inside of your guide. Moving on to tackle, I will go through all of my baits and replace/sharpen all of my hooks. In some cases I will add new terminal tackle as needed such as split rings. The last thing I make sure to always do is to organize before the spring arrives. The most important thing sometimes on a boat fishing is how quickly you can grab that lure out of your box and get it in front of the fish, so this is a step I never skip. When the winter boredom and cabin fever hit you this December, hunker down and start prepping for spring to maintain some sanity, it’s going to be a long one!

probably not going to get much out of ‘em. It does take time, thanks to that water temperature. If our water dips under about 55, they slow down quite and bit and become lethargic. If you throw it right in their face, meaning at least about 25 feet deep or better, they’ll eat. The silver lining is that when you do catch, you tend to catch good quality fish this time of year. Temper expectations going in, as you won’t put up big quantities typically, but with some patience and warm clothes, you can still have a great time out there fishing these beautiful lakes. CRUSHING AN OLD SUPERSTITION By: Jake Bussolini

everal Hundred years ago, banana growers on the tropical islands used fishing boats to transport their bananas to markets on the mainland. To keep the fruit from spoiling, the fishing boat captains would make these trips at a speed that was too fast to actually fish so the fishermen on these boats complained that bananas were keeping them from making a living selling their fish. From this concern it became a widely accepted superstition that if there were bananas on the boat, it was bad luck and no fish could be caught. In the minds of some older fishing captains, this superstition still exists today.

I have had a couple of occasions in recent years where anglers on my boat pulled a banana from their cooler and began to eat it. Being the gentleman that I am, I never objected to the practice but usually made a joke of the superstition and allowed the angler to eat the banana.

My local fishing club recently held a fishing tournament and as I usually do, I invited two other anglers to join me on my boat. I was a beautiful fall day and the water temperature had cooled nicely. The bass had become very active on the days before the tournament but on this day, things were very slow for most of the morning. The fish seemed to have suddenly stopped eating. Late that morning one of the anglers, Harry Thiel, pulled a banana from his bag and started peeling it. I just couldn’t resist telling him about the old suspicion but it didn’t deter him from peeling back the banana and eating it. To my amazement, the fish suddenly started biting in a frenzied fashion. At one point we had four bass on the lines at the same time. Within 45 minutes we had boated more than 25 bass, culling

don’t think it’s a stretch to say many folks don’t look forward to December Icontinuation and the beginning of winter. But for local anglers December’s a of primetime for hybrids, stripers, and our other predatory gamefish. Plus, there’s Christmas at months end which is a great time to acquire more tackle and gear!

On Lake Norman, water temperatures should be close to ideal (50-55⁰ F), and large schools of forage, primarily small-medium size herring, threadfin shad, and alewives form in major drainages above and below the Hwy 150 bridge. Depending on actual water temps and other conditions (wind, light, etc.) the bait can be found in creek mouths; midway back along the creek channels; and sometimes back close to the mudflats where the creeks enter the lake. Sea birds typically start showing up in November, and are excellent indicators of where concentrations of bait and gamefish are on any given day. In the cool water, schools of hybrids, stripers, spotted bass, and white perch roam freely throughout the water column. Surface feeding, and surface catching, opportunities can take place anytime, especially on low light days. Catfish are often below this activity, especially around humps and ledges near points or flats. The methods for catching winter gamefish are numerous. I’m an old live bait fishermen and live shad, herring, or even store-bought trout or shiners are effective. They can be fished on free lines or weighted lines to reach the desired depth. I use Carolina rigs with 1/0-3/0 circle hooks, but j-hooks and trebles are still used. You might consider fishing barbless hooks if you go with the latter, especially if you plan to release your catch alive and healthy. Since the introduction of blueback herring into Lake Norman, the action is often found in open water along deep creek channels, and more so along the river channel as winter progresses. I especially like to work the initial depth transition from the deep channel/flood plain to the shallower areas approaching the bank. These transition zones are easily identified on a topo map because the flood plain contains very few contour lines and the decreasing depths heading towards the bank are indicated by many contour lines. As a live bait striper angler, it took me quite some time to embrace trolling artificials (A-rigs, tandem bucktail rigs, crankbaits, etc.), but the open water activity in winter is a great time to employ this technique, simply because you can cover more water while tracking the fast-moving action. One of my favorite inshore saltwater offerings that has proven successful here in winter is the use of Gulp Alive swimming mullets. Of course I fish them on lead jig heads, for both trolling and casting. The curly tail design has a great swimming action, plus the profile and length are ideal for “matching the hatch” at Lake Norman. White or chartreuse are the only colors I carry, but I can vary my presentation by changing jig head colors. The integral scent is an added attractant. What I call my “Christmas tree A-rig” is a 2 tier, nine drop Shane’s Baits setup with 1/16 or 1/8 oz. red jig heads and chartreuse swimming mullets. It’s pretty gaudy, but some of my very best hybrid creels, both number and size-wise, have come from this display. Bass and perch love it too. If I’m not fishing Gulps, I often use a shad scented spray or gel on my more conventional swimbaits. Finally, though not as widely encountered as the above techniques, our gamefish are quite reachable with fly rod presentations. 7 to 9 weight rods with forward weighted, sinking lines and 2-3” shad patterns in, you guessed it, white and chartreuse, can be as or more effective than all of the above approaches. No matter your preference, there’s really no excuse to miss these early winter opportunities. Get your foul weather gear out, choose your weapons, and hit the water for some of the year’s best Fish On!

inter is officially here and brought the cold weather with her. The weather has been back and forth and so has the fishing. Weather this time of year can be your worst enemy or best friend if you know how to follow it. Winter also tends to yield less numbers but better quality. The fish have slowed and so should you. If you’re using artificial despite the species, slow your retrieval. This is a great time for live bait fishing as well. Sharp temperate drops will slow the bite if not shut it off. Daylight and warmer days will obviously work in your favor. Bass are no exception to this. Try throwing live shiners and let them do the work. Artificials are another great option with go to colors being white and chartreuse. Don’t forget slow your retrieval and sensation. A misconception is they will only hold deep which isn’t entirely true. They will go shallow looking for water warming from the sun or find where warm water feeds the lake. Bass will still be on structure just holding a little tighter. Rocks, especially those warmed from the day’s sun, will hold fish enjoying the warmth they hold as well. Bass will move shallower during day light to try and get some warmth from the sun. Crappie can be caught throughout the lake and in big numbers. Long lining or trolling will allow you to cover lots of ground. Trolling with jigs or minnows are good options. Watch your electronics for target depths. Night time under a light is always an efficient way to target them at night. I typically look for 25-30ft and fish according to the depth they are holding that day. This is my favorite time of the year for catfish. Not for numbers but for quality. If you can brave the cold, you may be rewarded with some of the larger sized catfish. Drift fishing and trolling will allow you to cover ground and present your bait to more blue cats and flat heads. Mid to lower column for blues or dragging bottom to just off bottom for flatheads. Planer boards will allow you to spread your bait much better. Often overlooked, make sure you have enough weight to keep your bait down if trolling or drifting. You don’t want your bait floating on top of the water while moving. The direction and amount of line you have out will help you determine if your bait is staying at the correct depth while moving. This is a great time of the year to get out and avoid all the boat traffic, enjoy the mild day and just enjoy the changing weather. The quality of fish will surprise a lot of people this time of year. Just remember, despite the temperature or time of year, you cannot catch them from the couch. So put the cell phone down and go outside and enjoy mother nature!

More Cow Bell Written By: Michelle Armstrong, Professional Angler

I once heard someone refer to jerkbaits as the “cold water cowbell”. Though cowbells are used to ward off predators, I deduced they meant “jerkbaits are like a dinner bell”. Either way I liked the analogy and it stuck. Jerkbaits are absolutely a phenomenal choice during cold water situations. During the winter, the shad are dying off. Weak, lethargic, and even dead shad, are super easy targets for Bass feeding up for the even colder days. You will see dead shad floating on top of the water and it’s worth a few casts to see if there is a struggling ball of them underneath. But more often, you’ll still see balls of bait this time of year either by sight or on your locator. You can bet that if these are balls of certain types of baitfish, they are moving slow, and dying off. Likely, there are Bass slowly moving amid or below.

Second on my list in a Smithwick Perfect 10 Rogue. It dives deeper and super fast getting under or into balls of bait. I like the color Clear. I can add glitter to the bottom and sides of the bait emphasizing side-flash just like a real baitfish. Typically I rig these on a Powell Endurance 723. This rod is very unique to say the least. It offers a forgiving moderate to fast action tip. It’s a glass/composite rod that’s perfect for reaction bites. Winters here in the South are not normally that extreme, but it’s “our”, (the natives that live here) extreme. And that can make for slower bass fishing or should I say catching. But geared up with the right bait that matches the hatch and a little patience, a cold day on the water can produce a lot of warmth from landing fish.

The best way to mimic these unfortunate bait fish, is a jerkbait. One would think it’s fairly easy to mimic the It’s cold, so bundle up and go catch a fish dead, and it is, but it also takes patience. And by that I mean, it’s easy to reel, jerk, pause, reel, jerk, pause etc.. and you’ll get a few bites. But it takes patience to get more than a few bites. Now I don’t mean sit in the same spot, in the cold, and “die” yourself. I mean, just slow down a bit and let the fish see the jerkbait for a few seconds. It’s not exactly a dead stick technique. It’s more like, I’m a dying shad, and I’m catching my breath technique. Of course Bass still eat in cold water, but they are definitely a little slower themselves. Trying not to use all of their energy chasing bait. Therefore, sometimes you need to dangle the food source in their face a tad bit longer. Bass typically like a more caloric and challenging meal, but times are tough during the winter, so they will take what they can get. Just like any other time in fishing, If the Bass are there, you’ll know fairly soon. You just have to get them to communicate. It’s important to try different retrievals in an area that you are confident that holds fish. The trick to jerkbaits is usually the cadence. Twitch twitch 3-7 second pause/twitch twitch twitch 7-10 second pause can make all the difference in the world on achieving a strike. For some anglers, this is agonizing, but for those who can slow down a little, it can prove extremely productive. A “Clown” Smithwick Rattlin Rogue is first on my list. Though I’ve heard over the years some fishermen refer to this as a “floating” jerkbait, it’s actually a suspending jerkbait. Once you reel - twitch twitch, on the pause, it has a super slow rise that will make for a sudden dart once you resume your retrieve. It can also be productive when you cast this lure to let it sit for a few seconds before you start your retrieval. Often this can produce a reaction topwater strike. 14 CHARLOTTE/PIEDMONT

here are two sayings I have found to be true throughout my years of fishing. The first is,” 10% of the fisherman, catch 90% of the fish.” T And the second, “90% of the fish are in 10% of the lake.” The latter

is especially true during the winter months. As the temperature drops, so will the fishing productivity. The one thing we have on our side as anglers is, no matter the temperature or weather. The fish have got to eat. Fishing slow is the name of the game this time of year. Most people know to use big soft plastics, jigs, and spoons to drag or bump the bottom. So this piece will be more about strategy than tactics. As I said above, 90% of the fish are in 10% of the lake. Now obviously that doesn’t mean that there is one special cove in the lake where all the fish are hiding. More like, there is a specific cover the fish will be attached to. Covered docks, rocky shore lines or and other structure that may heat the surrounding water is a good starting point in the winter months. Crawfish and minnow will seek refuge in a the cracks between the rocks, dragging jigs and drop shot with smaller minnow imitations, along with deep diving cranks can do well this time of year. Just remember, once you catch a fish, try to remember the structure the fish was on. Then search around for similar structures and find the pattern. Crappie fishing can be slow this month, fishing the 20’+ range depth around brush piles and bridges can be productive. Vertical jigging with live minnows and artificial jigs are still the best bet. Try fishing a few inches off the bottom or bouncing the bottom with jigs. The Catfish have also gone deep. Fishing the lower half of the lake, in 30’+ will give you the best odds. Fishing with cut bait on main lake points, bridge pilings, and main lake ledges are all good spots for the big ones to hang out. Cats will be hugging the bottom either cruising around to different points of cover, or they will be sitting still while in or under cover. Stink bait can also be effective in bringing them out of cover to eat.

s a kid in middle school I can remember dreaming about fishing. A Whether it was wading in creeks, or getting dropped off at a pond while my dad was at work during the summer, I couldn’t get enough. I’m not sure exactly when, but at some point life happened and fishing got left behind for things like parties, motorcycles, school and other sports. Fast forward over 15 years later and living close to multiple lakes in the Charlotte area started to bring back the itch to fish again.

A few weeks after buying a kayak I found the Queen City Kayak Bass Fishing Facebook page. I had no idea it was tournament based and honestly didn’t even know you could fish a tournament from a kayak. Soon after requesting to join the group I’m on the phone with Vinny Ferreri asking about how a tournament works. Talk about going out of his way to help new members. The guy talked to a stranger on the phone at 6am giving all the details and then offered to sell me a lined and custom colored Hawg Trough because I couldn’t find one locally. Wow… I had no intention of fishing tournaments at that point, but I was so impressed I had to try it. The next thing I know I’m on Lake Norman with a couple small spinning rods and a bait caster I could barely use in the middle of February with some of the best anglers in the Carolinas. After getting my butt whooped for 8 hours I stayed for weigh in and watched John Ladd take home 1st place out of 96 anglers. I only caught 2 fish that day and finished 48th but I was so impressed with the entire experience that I knew I would be back. I just had to learn what these successful anglers were doing to catch fish year round. Turns out it was a lot… everything from using different rod/ reel combos for different techniques, to picking certain colors at different times of the year, and even paying attention to weather patterns. Red crankbaits?!? Really?!? I thought those looked ridiculous every time I saw them in stores and would have never used one. I made it my goal the rest of that first year to focus on learning how to fish and not worry about winning/losing. Being a competitive person my whole life it was a tough pill to swallow getting my butt whooped on a regular basis but I knew I had to put the time in on the water to be successful. After finishing 19th overall in points for the year and failing to capitalize on a trip to the shootout event for the last wild card spot in the Tournament of Champions (TOC) I was more motivated than ever. I told Vinny not to get used to seeing me in the shootout because I would qualify for the TOC on points alone next year. He said he hoped I was right but that he hears it from lots of anglers every year and only 15 get in. I had no idea just how true my statement would be.

like there was hope and went on to cull 2 more times to finish 11th. After that day I stayed confident and grinded for every second of each tournament just knowing I would come across a willing fish and was often times rewarded with a significant cull in the last 1015 minutes on the water. I would go on to finish no worse than 2nd in any of the 8 events I fished the rest of the year including two trail wins and a charity win. With lots of time spent on the water and an incredible amount of luck, I managed to overtake two of the best kayak anglers in the country Matt and PC Hawj for Queen City Kayak Bass Fishing Angler of the Year. Joey and I finished 2nd overall for the team division behind the Hawj brothers. From year one not qualifying for the TOC to winning 2019 AOY and finishing 2nd in the TOC my first two seasons of tournament fishing were polar opposites. I can honestly say putting in time on the water, attention to details, and more experienced anglers being willing to offer advice are the biggest factors in how different my first 2 tournament seasons were. The local fishing companies that sponsor our club like True South Custom Lures, Bizz Baits, Rusty Hooks Bait & Tackle, Denver Tackle have been amazing. I can honestly say that a majority of my success this year came using their products and it’s all because veteran anglers were willing to share what they caught fish on. The entire theme to 2019 for me has been lessons learned. I encourage anyone else interested in fishing tournaments to not wait until you feel “comfortable”. Just go for it. You’ll learn so much and make great friendships. If I can go from having no clue what I’m doing in year one to winning AOY year two against a club full of the best anglers in the country anyone can. Regardless of my success this year I still have a lot to learn and am just getting started. I’ll see you guys in 2020!

I came into the 2019 season motivated with specific goals for the year. I took every chance I had to read articles, map study, watch videos, and learn as much as I could. I asked Vinny and the other anglers so many questions I kept waiting for them to just stop responding but all I ever got were honest answers and help. I treated every trip on the water as if I was pre-fishing not just fun fishing. While I understand it’s not how most anglers feel, to me prepping for a tournament is more enjoyable than just “fun fishing”. It gave purpose to what I was doing even when the fish weren’t biting or it was cold, rainy, hot or otherwise just miserable to be on the water. Lightning being the only real exception, tournaments don’t stop for weather or fish not biting so why should pre-fishing stop for it? Eventually one of the anglers I consistently badgered with questions, Joey Randall, saw potential and decided to take a risk as my partner for the 2019 team division. I knew this was my chance to really learn as much as I could from a seasoned vet and took full advantage. We talked fishing on a regular basis and became great friends through a mutual “nerding out” over ways to trick these green fish into biting pieces of plastic and metal. Fast forward to halfway through the season and I’m definitely doing better than last year but just didn’t really have confidence. There was a distinct moment on the water in our 5th event at Badin when something changed. The pattern I found the weekend before was gone. I had a small limit and was debating changing ramps. Joey and I were both struggling, just kind of talking while fishing and all of the sudden I hook into a 19.75” largemouth. In that instant I felt 16 CHARLOTTE/PIEDMONT

he constant hum of Christmas music has been playing in the background since before Halloween even ended. The yellow & orange of Fall have been replaced with red & green. The holidays are here and it’s time to buy stuff! Whether you’re looking to introduce a new angler to the sport, upgrade your personal collection or make up for the tie you gifted last year, if you’re in the market for a new fly rod, there is quite a bit to consider. Aside from rod weight and length, the most important variable in determining which fly rod ends up under the tree is your budget. Fly rods come in a wide range of prices and striking the right balance of quality v. cost can be overwhelming. Excluding the junky Walmart combo kits and specialty handmade bamboo treasures, there are four basic performance & price levels for fly rods: Entry, Intermediate, Entry Performance and Peak Performance. Figuring out which level you fall in to, will help you narrow down your choices. Entry point rods range from about $100 - $150. Usually, you can buy these as combo packages that include the reel & line as well. These rods don’t have a sophisticated action or the aesthetics of some of their higher priced cousins. They’re a little heavier and clunky, but will generally get the job done for most simple applications. They’re great for youths, as a leave-it-in-the-truck rod or for folks who aren’t yet sure they want to invest in the sport. Look for a quality brand when buying entry rods. Top brands want new customers to be satisfied with their entry products, so that they stay within the brand to upgrade. Two entry rods that I like are the Orvis Encounter and the Redington Path.

All of these girls are pretty, but you want to find the one with a personality to match. Check out the Sage X, Orvis Helios 3 and the Hardy Zephrus. While it’s not necessary to take out a second mortgage to afford your new rod, I do recommend investing in a quality product. Choose a trusted brand, with a competitive warranty, from a retailer that values customer service. When you consider the time, the gas, the planning and all of the other energy you put into actually getting on the water, you want to make sure you have gear that performs when you get there. Find a rod that you like and that you can be proud of. Feel great about your purchase and look forward to the memories you’ll build with it.

Intermediate rods range from $150 - $300. These are the workhorse rods that fit the all-around needs for many anglers. Rod action is consistent and approachable, if not entirely crisp. This is a rod for someone who wants to cover a range of fishing scenarios with a quality product, without breaking the bank. Most guide rods will fall into this class. They will do pretty much everything ok, but aren’t designed for more advanced techniques. The Redington Classic Trout and Orvis Clearwater are great intermediate choices. Muskie Madness By Roy Stanford & Britt Stoudenmire

As the leaves are changing to the beautiful oranges, yellows, and reds the air is getting cooler. Walking outside and seeing your breath is a sign of most people are getting off the water and wrapping up in nice cozy blankets at home. Well here at NROC (New River Outdoor Company) we are out battling the cold still finding fish. As the guides on our rods are freezing and our hands are freezing to the reels the warmth you feel as you are reeling in a trophy size muskie is a thrill that will warmth the body very fast. As the fall progresses, we have finally gotten some rain here in the New River Valley. The rain has given a little color back to the water as well as flow that we have needed. As we go deeper into fall with the cooler temps the muskie madness begins. Although, they call the muskie the fish of 10,000 casts they are very active fish in the coming months. Muskies are the Apex predators here on the New River, so they will eat anything in their path. The diet of a muskie is mostly what we call suckers. Now, I have seen muskies eat ducks, beavers, and yes they eat the occasional smallmouth bass. So, how did I get involved in the muskie madness? Imagine it’s the dead of winter and it’s the month of January. The temperature outside is 8 degrees Fahrenheit. My good friend Jesse Carper invites me out on his Coleman Crawdad to go muskie fishing. Well with a curious mind I go and not sure what I’m about to get myself into. We get to our meeting that morning and we are attempting to go find muskies on the James River. Jesse and I arrive at the meeting spot and see the James is frozen with ice all the across the river in

some spots. Instead of giving up and calling it a day, we make an audible and go to the New River where I have been bass fishing before. We arrive to the New River and there is some ice on the banks the temps are now up to 22 degrees Fahrenheit, so we unload the Crawdad and do our shuttle. Finally, we are on the boat fishing. Now, it was my first time fishing and we go through what figure eight is as well as the basics of it. Jesse hands me a rod and he is going through his tackle box looking for an easy bait to start me out with. He gives me a Adams trout and it looks exactly like a rainbow trout. Then, all of a sudden he brings out a big bait that weighs a pound or more! We get into fishing then boom he has a follow up within first couple of his casts. Then, I have my first follow up and of course I mess it all up. Going down the river some him and I are talking then he yells NET! So I frantically grab the net and scoop the fish up in the net. I was in shock of the power and the majestic way of this fish. I was addicted now, so I continued to fish and never caught one for over a year and a half. I was probably on my 10,000th cast before I caught one. This is how I became a muskie guy. Muskies can be the most frustrating fish and sometimes you just ask why. I have learned you can’t ask why with these animals anymore and you just have to keep fishing. Here on the New River the muskies are more abundant and fired up than ever. In the late Spring and early Summer, after the spawn, Brim take over the empty beds and also make tons of their own. Do yourself a favor and keep a Prop Bees in your hand to cast over the beds. Brian’s Baby Bream was instrumental in landing me a top ten finish in a tournament this year. Hand crafted from Balsa wood Brian Huskins, owner of Brian’s Crankbaits and Bloody Thumb Lures, makes some of the best prop baits money can buy.

It’s that time of the year! A time when fathers and mothers pass down their tradition of hunting practices to their children, friends gather, and we turn to nature. The woods are full of anxious hunters, patiently waiting for the perfect opportunity to take a shot. So many incredible memories between family and friends are made during this time. So let’s be sure those memories continue to be made. Let’s review some important safety rules: 1) Tell someone where you’re going and when you plan to return. If you move from one area to another advise someone. 2) Be familiar with the area you want to hunt. Take a GPS or compass to prevent getting lost. 3) Carry a flashlight while walking through the hunting area before or after daylight. 4) Carry a first aid kit. 5) Dress for the weather. Wear hunter orange so you can be seen. If you take a dog with you, make sure it also wears hunter orange. 6) Do not use alcohol, drugs or smoke cigarettes while handling a firearm.

7) Keep your firearm unloaded until ready to use. 8) Be sure the barrel is clear of obstructions before shooting. 9) Don’t rely on the mechanical safety. Treat your firearm as if it’s loaded and ready to fire. 10) Always keep the muzzle of your firearm pointed in a safe direction. 11) Keep your finger off the trigger until ready to shoot. 12) Be sure of your target and what’s beyond it. Know the range of your firearm. 13) Understand how to recognize the different types of firearm and ammunition malfunctions and how to respond to or clear the malfunction. 14) Never cross a fence, climb a tree or stand or jump a ditch with a loaded gun. Never hoist a loaded firearm into a stand. 15) Always unload firearms before riding in any vehicle, including ATVs. There is one more thing I want to share with you that is also very important. HAVE FUN! Enjoy your time, make new traditions, and have a wonderful holiday season!
