he International Game Fish Association (IGFA) tracks record fish catches around the globe, and they have been busy. Since December, they have approved 65 new entries, including line class, fly-caught and youth records for different species. More than 30 of those records are all-tackle records, which means they are the largest individuals ever documented with IGFA. Here’s a quick look at some highlights: Tan’s Nile Perch Christopher Tan of Malaysia caught and released an incredible 146-centimeter (4.8-foot) Nile perch to set the IGFA All-Tackle Length World Record. In early August, Tan was casting a Halco Laser Pro 190 in Murchison Falls, Uganda. Pitman’s Golden Trevally Aussie angler Sahra Pitman caught a beautiful 12.25-kilogram (27-pound, 1-ounce) golden trevally to set the new IGFA Women’s 6-kg (12-lb.) Line Class World Record while fishing in Shark Bay, Western Australia. The record fish hit a McCarthy soft plastic and put up a 20-minute fight. It is currently the largest Line Class record of any received for golden trevally. Weeks’ Green Humphead Parrotfish Mark Weeks set the bar high with the first green humphead parrotfish submitted for an IGFA All-Tackle World Record, with a massive 46.35-kilogram (102-pound, 3-ounce) fish he caught and released while fly fishing the flats of Providence, Seychelles. The record parrotfish sucked up a crab pattern and took off across the flat.

Allum’s Rainbow Trout Emily Allum caught and released an impressive 13.30-kilogram (29-pound, 5-ounce) rainbow trout to set the new IGFA Women’s 4-kg (8-lb.) Line Class World Record. Allum was casting a Glo Bug in the Tekapo Canal, New Zealand, and fought the record trout for 10-minutes prior to weighing and releasing it. Schmid’s Arctic Char James Schmid recently set the new IGFA All-Tackle Length World Record for Arctic char with a gorgeous 93-centimeter (nearly 17-inch) fish. The char ate a Vibrax Blue Fox spinner in the Red Belly Lake, Victoria Island, Canada. After an 8-minute fight, James took the required measurement and released the fish.

The U.S. Coast Guard recently approved the use of Serious Signal’s flagship electronic visual distress signal device as a nighttime distress signal. The C-1002 is the industry’s first and only two-color distress light approved for carriage, which completely and legally replaces the need to carry marine pyrotechnic flares. The C-1002 also includes features that enhance its functionality to the level of an alert and notification system. “We’re thrilled that the C-1002 Electronic LED Flare passed the extremely challenging laboratory testing required by the Coast Guard,” said Anthony Covelli, Sirius Signal CEO. “It’s the brightest multi-LED handheld SOS device on the planet—one that required sophisticated engineering and many new innovative solutions to overcome daunting challenges.” The C-1002 flashes the SOS distress signal—three short flashes, three long flashes, three short flashes, using a two-color plus infrared SOS flash pattern (red/ orange and cyan) that has been found more effective against shoreline background light clutter, according to studies conducted by the U.S. Coast Guard R&D Center. The C-1002 is also Bluetooth-enabled with advanced mobile app connectivity, providing an additional layer of protection and communication for recreational boaters— and its infrared signal will be recognized by SAR aircraft from miles overhead. “Based on our review… we acknowledge that the subject device, as tested, meets the performance criteria as specified in the policy letter and may be carried to meet regulatory requirements as a nighttime distress signal per 33 CFR 175.130,” noted the letter Sirius Signal received from the Coast Guard. In time for the 2020 boating season, the C-1002 will be available for purchase on the Sirius Signal website and Amazon.com, as well as at premier marine distributors.

he organizers of the Blue Marlin Grand Championship, one of the cornerstone tournaments on the Gulf of Mexico marlin circuit, have announced a new event. The Invitational, slated for August 6-8, will feature a field of just 30 teams and a first-place prize of $1 million. “We asked a number of the top boat owners and captains that are currently fishing in these tournaments in the Gulf about what they would like to see in a new event,” said tournament promoter Scott Burt. “Their overwhelming response was two-fold: They wanted to know who they were fishing against, and they wanted to fish for a million dollars for the winner.” With a minimum qualifying length of 112 inches LJFL, blue marlin will be scored at one point per pound. Released blue marlin are worth 625 points, although it’s clearly stated in the rules that the heaviest qualifying blue marlin will win first place. Second through fourth place will be decided by a combination of release and weighed fish points. However, in the event that no qualifying fish are weighed, release points decide the overall winner. Therefore, a seven-figure payday is possible for billfish releases in the Gulf. The Invitational is an all-in format, with a flat entry fee of $50,000 per boat. Aside from the million dollars awarded to first, second place will earn $145,000, third place is worth $100,000 and fourth, $75,000. Boats may depart from any port in the Gulf of Mexico, with the weigh-in held at The Wharf Marina in Orange Beach, Ala. t all depends on the weather, but the Bassmaster Classic could produce some serious sacks of fish when some of the world’s best bass tournament anglers descend on Alabama’s Lake Guntersville March 6-8. On the 50th anniversary of the iconic championship event, 53 anglers who have qualified through the B.A.S.S. tournament season will launch on the sprawling, grass-filled impoundment of the Tennessee River during what has historically been prime time for big bass on the “Big G.” Pre-spawn activity was already ramping up during an early-February warm spell, although heavy rains, high waters and the cold front that followed pushed the fish right back out in the middle of the month. What that should mean is bass are primed to move up as soon as conditions stabilize. And when they move up, they will feed up in preparation for the spawn. If the first week of March sees warmer weather and rains hold off, this year’s Classic could become a shootout featuring heavy five-fish limits and some monster bass. Some of the largest fish of the year are usually caught during the early stages of the spawn. On the other hand, north Alabama is a place where early spring could bring 75 degree temperatures or snow flurries. Sometimes tough fishing conditions are just the thing to separate great anglers from good ones. Either way, with a more than $1 million purse, $300,000 for the winner and all of the industry perks that come with a Classic victory, it will be a lifechanging event for at least one angler. n Jan. 25, Forrest Lee Wood, the iconic sportsman and founder of Ranger Boats, died at the age of 87. An early pioneer of tournament bass fishing, Wood was an entrepreneur who left an indelible mark on the angling world. He is widely credited with development of the modern bass boat. Wood began his career in the outdoors as a trout fishing guide on the White River in Arkansas. In 1968, he and his wife, Nina, founded Wood Manufacturing Co., and he built his first six boats behind a service station in Flippin, Ark. His fledgling company, renamed Ranger Boats in honor of the Texas Rangers and U.S. Army Rangers, flourished along with the exploding popularity of tournament bass fishing through the 1970s. A competitive angler himself, Wood qualified for two Bassmaster Classics. He fished 101 B.A.S.S. tournaments with a good deal of success, and his knowledge of what bass anglers want in a boat led to the prototypes that influenced all bass boats that followed. Ranger was the official boat of B.A.S.S. from 1972-2000. In 1996, Wood’s initials were used to rename the Operation Bass tournament series, and the FLW Tour was born with its championship event the Forrest Wood Cup. In addition to his involvement in boat building and tournament bass fishing, Wood was a sportsman and a conservationist who served as commissioner of the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission.

Forecast for Lake Hickory & Rhodhiss March can be a fruitful time of year, assuming North Carolina actually decides to give us March weather. Temperatures can possibly be all over the board, ranging anywhere from 30 degrees up to 75 or even pushing 80. That fluctuation can obviously cause some discrepancies in the water temperature, as well. If you’re looking at about 40 degree temperatures, you’re probably going to be around that 55 to 59 degree water temperature range. If the temperature rises, remember that the water temperature will as well so you will want to find the right time of day to bring in the best haul. Late afternoons and early mornings during warmer temperatures are typically prime times. At 59 degree water temperature largemouth bass fishing is in pre-spawn now. It’s time to get fishing. Female bass are going to be moving up to the spawning beds. Male largemouth bass will be starting to build the spawning nests in protected coves. Bass prefer to spawn in weedy and woody cover deep in coves that will be protected from the wind and other elements. We’ve had a ton of rain and flooding in the last month, so keep that in mind when thinking about water levels. Water clarity this time of year is typically in the 1 to 3 feet range. You’re still fishing main lake points and staging places such as docks, brush and structure. A lot of action will be happening in the shallow waters, in the 3 to 6ft depths. The female bass will

be feeding until they reach the beds and start the spawn. The smaller male bass will be attacking lures also. Fish plastics, small spinner type baits, quiet crank baits, as well as small minnow and shad for live bait. The crappie spawn should also be kicking into gear right about now. Crappie prefers to spawn on gravel bottom typically with brush and/or emergent vegetation for cover. Find the rocks or rip rap. Crappie will use the larger structure rocks for cover. Catfish are becoming more active around this time, as well. You can find them in a multitude of depths and areas – some being in the shallow water and some being in the 1518 feet range, biting shad, shrimp, and/or mullet. Look around beds and rocky banks. Stripers are biting and becoming active once again. This is a great time, these next couple months, for stripers. They’re schooling late in the evening on main lake points and shad are still the go-to bait for these bass. These beginning months of the season are terrific times to fish, as long as you take into account all of the considering factors such as weather, barometric pressure, water temperatures, wind and cloud cover. Stay safe, stay warm (and maybe even cool) and enjoy the outdoors!

Forecast for High Rock, Badin & Tuckertown By: John Martin March is finally here and those big bass are going to be moving to the bank. It’s the time of year when the fishing can go from tough to fantastic in a matter of hours as fish move up during the day from deeper water to feed and get ready to spawn. We had lots of rain in February and the lakes have some stained water and that will help the water temps rise quickly during the sunny days in March. A week of stable weather will really get things going on the Yadkin lakes this time of year. Look for the bass to be in staging areas near spawning flats. Main lake and secondary points are good places to look. The depth will vary on how the fish will set up in an area but look for key areas in the 4 to 10 foot zone. In a previous issue, I wrote about my concern that the food source for the fish in Lake Norman is slowly disappearing by the noticeable absence of large schools of shad. Since that time, I have had some feedback from anglers and I have discussed the possible problem with wildlife officials. This writing is an update of my findings.

downstream slows to nearly neutral flow in the south part of the lake resulting in the water at the north end of the lake containing higher nutrition than the water in the southern regions. The fish, including the small bait type fish, will naturally gravitate to the higher nutrition water closer to where the river water enters the lake.

Anglers who do most of their fishing in the upper areas of the lake have reported that they do not see that problem in the areas that they fish, primarily north of the 150 bridge. There is also a general feeling that the game fish in the northern regions of the lake are larger than those caught in the southern part of the lake. I have also come to that conclusion. That naturally leads me to ask why?

This theory makes some sense to me and we may see some change as the spring approaches since the recent water draw down and the large amount of rain will certainly cause a change in the water flow rate, even in the south areas of the lake. Anglers should keep their eyes on their sonar screens and let me know if they begin to see the shad return to the south end of the lake. Like the weather, these things are often cyclic, and hopefully those of us who normally fish the south end of the lake will see the shad return soon. My e mail is allandco@roadrunner.com. In one of my books, written several years ago, I answered the question asked on a local angler. “Why are the game fish in Lake Norman smaller than those caught in other waters elsewhere in the country?” My answer then possibly relates to the shad shortage problem that I am now discussing. Lake Norman waters are very clean compared to many lakes in terms of the level of nutrients contained in the water. There is an adequate amount of food in the lake but the water quality is so high that it lacks the nutrition required by the fish to extend their growth.

Nitrogen and phosphorus are nutrients that are natural parts of the aquatic ecosystem. These two elements support the growth of algae and aquatic plants, which provide food for fish and other smaller organisms that live in the lake. Lake Norman is but one of many lakes fed by the Catawba River. The river itself, because it flows over miles of different types of land, picks up several different nutrients along the way. As the river flows into Lake Norman, if drops its high nutrient levels into the north end of the lake. Lake Norman is so large, that the current flow

Look at the Big Brain on Bass By: Michelle Armstrong If you’ve ever visited Bass Pro Shops (my happy place) it can be quite overwhelming. The store is lined with thousands of lures that promise to catch fish. It can be hard to figure out what to select. Anglers take to the internet, YouTube, etc spending hours on research to find what fellow fishermen are “catching them on”. This can be helpful in eliminating alot of wasted time trying to go out cold turkey. Dock talk (talking among friends) is another way to learn but will kill you every time. Firstly, fishermen lie, (when will we ever learn) and secondly, it is almost impossible to fish another guy’s water. Their position in the water, speed of retrieve, boat manuevering etc, is mostly impossible to recreate. That’s not to say you can’t catch fish in the same spot as your friend, just don’t expect the hundred fish day that they tell you about. Plus, fish learn. You heard me, fish learn. Perfect example is spawning areas. They don’t just aimlessly go back to these same areas year after year. They learn. They have a brain. Not a very big one, but it is still useful to them in many ways. They can tell if the forage presented to them is a little “off”. This is how they escape danger. If you’re throwing a crankbait that isn’t the color or size, or movement of the bait in season, it is likely that they will snub your bait. This is why you hear seasoned fisherman preach, “match the hatch”.

Fishing line? Yep, they learn. Once upon a time, the only way to use an “A rig” was on braided line. The bite slowed and a few anglers switched to Flourocarbon and voila, the bite was on again for them. What’s the moral of this story? All of the baits at Bass Pro Shops work without a doubt. But that fish’s little brain will outsmart even the most seasoned angler. You have to constantly switch things up to stay ahead. What worked yesterday doesn’t always work today. Take what you learn and hear, and build on it. Stick with “your” confidence and knowledge. Don’t abandon your fishing hole because the day before you caught ‘em on a worm and today they aren’t biting. They are still in the general area. Expand, and try different baits. I’ll bet you’ll find they just changed their behavior for the moment. I know, that was a lengthy “moral to the story”. Don’t be so sure that fish are dumb. If they were, then explain why you get outsmarted. So go “learn” and go catch a fish.

Bass have a brain, but their sight and temper are awful. This explains the proverbial “reaction strike”. Noisy baits will often come into play when the fishing is tough. But even then, they learn. Take the Whopper Plopper for example. A few years ago, it was THE bait to have. EVERYBODY was catching big numbers all the time. But after a few years, the bite died off. Why? Because they learn!

Forecast for Lake Norman By: Captain Craig Price “Beware the Ides of March” the soothsayer warns in Shakespeare’s play Julius Caesar. Caesar would have been wise to heed the warning. According to Wikipedia, he was assassinated on March 15, obviously bad news for him in its own right, but especially bad because most gamefish are in full pre-spawn feeding mode by mid to late March. Poor ole Caesar probably missed the bite that year, and every year after. More recently, March continues to be a transition month when the last strong weather fronts of winter push through central NC with lots of wind and rain as winter gives way to spring begrudgingly. Growing up here, our deepest snows always came in March when southerly fronts containing gulf moisture collided with cold air from the artic. In between the fronts, the conditions could be quite balmy. The ever-changing weather presents challenges for area anglers, but opportunities are also part of the deal. This a great time of year to catch big bass, hybrids, perch, and crappie. These fish are fat from winter feeding and full of eggs or milt, and they become more aggressive in March’s warming water as they “feed up” before spawning.

Pay particular attention to south facing shores near protected pockets where the water warms more quickly than north facing or stretches exposed to recent wind. Don’t overlook docks with black encapsulated floatation on sunny afternoons, they radiate warmth into the water and gamefish alike. As always, it’s a matter of determining the depth the fish prefer on any given day, and presenting baits they’ll strike. In early March, I’m often still employing my winter trolling setup, mainly using artificial lures I can troll quickly while chasing the open water bite. By late March, I’m back to deploying live baits and fishing more specific targets (points, humps) with a combination of free lines and/or down rods. Capt. More so than in times of stable weather (summer), anglers may need to adapt their fishing techniques and locations numerous times this month. Water temperature and multi-day weather patterns are the keys, though other forces like longer days and moon phases influence late winter, early spring fish behavior. Though not a March summation without exceptions, strong wind (and rain) generally scatters the bait and moves gamefish deeper. Stretches of warmer days with lighter winds generally allows the bait to gang back up, and the gamefish move shallower to feed when the forage goes to warmer water in shallow or near the surface. The overall warm up usually happens on a different schedule every year, and some years it might not happen until April. A good rule of thumb follows: As long as the water temps remain below 50F, look for hybrids, spotted bass, and perch along the floodplain or points in the river channel, or in creeks impacted by the power plant hot water discharges. As water temps climb above 50F, look for true pre-spawn staging to increase in creeks, on primary and secondary points near the mouths of coves, or on drops near flats and shallow banks.

Online Outdoors By Scott T. Fletcher Whether it’s learning about a new fishing spot, discovering a lake to take the grandchild, ferreting out a previously unknown boating access, knowing the current lake level, or studying a mountain trout map on which to float an #16 elk hair caddis, it’s always good to pick up a new outdoor tip. Often those tips are available online, provided by state natural resource agencies, as well as several other non-governmental sources. You just need to know where to look. Checking these sources before you head out can save you time, effort, and in some cases, money. Below are a few beneficial websites to keep in mind: Lake and Stream Information • The NC/SC utility company Duke Energy has recently come out with a real-time app called, Lake View (in the App Store search “Duke Energy Lake View”). This app provides helpful information on current lake levels (i.e., Catawba-Wateree, Yadkin-Pee Dee, Nantahala, and several other Duke managed lake areas), flow releases below the hydroelectric facilities, boating access alerts such as closures, and special messages such as high water conditions and facility operations such as dam gate releases.

• The NCWRC at ncwildlife.org (see “Boating”) provides information on the state laws for operating boats on public waterways, rules of the water (including navigation aids), National Association of State Boating Law Administration (NASBLA) approved boating education courses (i.e., instructor led and online courses), boat registration and licensing, and a helpful boater’s checklist of safety and equipment requirements. • For our more southern Carolina brethren, the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR) provides similar boating information. Through accessing dnr.sc.gov (see “Boating”) you can access safety tips (including a helpful float plan template), current regulations, registration, titling and licensing, and approved boating education courses. Spending a few minutes educating yourself on these resources can help you make the most of your time on the water. Scott T. Boating and Fishing Access • The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission (NCWRC) provides excellent information regarding areas to fish, as well as waterway access (see “Fishing”). The site provides interactive maps on the various access types (e.g., bank access, boat ramps, canoe/kayak access) and the fish species found in that area. Along with that info comes a map of the various fish attractor locations (by lake) including the type (e.g., rock reef ) and location coordinates (Lat/Long). In addition, there is also a public mountain trout water map for all the 26 mountain trout counties in NC (by stream classification). For anglers in the NC Piedmont area that are looking for some hot “urban lakes” see the NCWRC’s publication “City Lakes Fishing Guide for the Central Piedmont Region of NC” (see “Fishing/Learn Resources/Publications”) or just enter the title into your favorite search engine. • dnr.sc.gov (again see “Boating”) provides a similar interactive map on public boat ramps within the Palmetto State. You can search by name, county, and waterbody. Boat ramp information, coordinates, and directions are provided for each facility. Boating Safety and Regulations In the Carolinas, we’re blessed with thousands of miles navigable waterways that harbor numerous gamefish and wildlife species, as well as aesthetically pleasing areas to slow down and relax. However, there are safety and regulatory responsibilities that come with being out on the water in a motorized watercraft.

Forecast for Lake Wylie By: Phillip Rizzitello It’s time for the water! This time of the year is fairly unpredictable as our weather changes day by day. We might get snow one day and in the 80’s the next day. The good thing is the warmer weather is right around the corner and with that comes the spawn. The cooler nights aren’t helping our situation any, but these warm snaps are moving us in the right direction. With all the rain we have been receiving our lakes look like chocolate milk with a lot of debris in the water. This can be good and bad depending on how you play your cards and what you are targeting. For bass, you’re going to have to get their attention. Noise will be a great friend of yours. Choose something that rattles or makes commotion, as with this dingy water fish aren’t going to be seeing a whole lot, they will be relying on other senses. Lure colors that stand out will also help your cause. The bass should start prespawning soon and it will happen quickly so watch your water temps so you don’t miss out. Crappie are going to be fished fairly similar with something appealing to other senses with sight. Live bait is always a go to but find those super lively minnows and let them make a ton of commotion! Catfish are loving this trashy water and are foraging hard. Not so much due to the dirtiness but more so the moving water being pulled. Look for points, edges of coves, etc. that creates the water is moving past but the fish doesn’t necessarily have to fight the turbulence and can feed on passing items. That’s not to

say they won’t hold and forage in the moving water, so don’t rule that out. Fishing aside, stay alert for changing weather/water conditions as we have been experiencing a lot of flooding and rain. Know you and your boats limits. All the fish in the world don’t matter if you don’t make it home safely to your loved ones! Forecast for Lake Wateree By: Cory Davis The days are getting longer, so the fishing is getting better. Lake Wateree can be a fisherman’s paradise in the next few months. As always, the major factor is weather. Temperature swings, rains, and dynamic lake levels will be key components to determining what the fish are doing.

The shad are on the move, and so are the Stripers. The Dam can hold some numbers, although the river channel in the upper lake can hold some of the better fish. Trolling with planer boards is a good way to locate the fish, and cut bait can also be productive this time of year.

Bass will be in full blown pre spawn mode through the month. The bass are moving from the main lake points and deep water channels to secondary points along the bigger creek channels, taking cover around docks, laydowns, submerged timber, and rocky points along the way. The bass will move deeper into the back of creeks throughout the month looking for potential spawn locations. Therefore, don’t be afraid to fish in 2-3 feet of water this time of year. Spinnerbaits, Jigs, Crankbaits, and soft plastics will be productive and the topwater bite should only get better.

As the water temperatures begin to increase the Catfishing action should heat up too. Catfish are transitioning out of the winter pattern and will begin to gorge on food to regain weight lost over winter and prepare for spawn. The fish will be moving this time of year so locating them can be difficult. The upper half of the lake in 10’-30’ with cut bait is a good place to start.

Lake Wateree Crappie fishing will turn on during March. Crappie will spawn when the water temperatures reach the low to mid 50’s. Therefore fish will be back in creeks and shallow flats making beds. Fishing shallow will offer the best opportunity to get on fish and trolling Jigs in 2’-5’ close to the bottom can be a productive technique this time of year.

Queen City Kayak Bass Fishing has had its second event of 2020. We visited the amazing Lake Murray in February. It was a new body of water for us all. Tornados and thunderstorms touched down and flooded the areas around the lake. It made the fishing tough, but we still had 85 anglers come play!! River Runner Outdoors in Columbia, SC was our host. They did an amazing job. David Golding was able to catch 69 inches of cold muddy bass and here at QCKBF we love to give our anglers the shine they deserve. David wrote up an article about his fishing experiences, in life, and with QC. We hope to see you all next month on Lake Norman for the largest event to ever come to the Carolinas. Hello, my name is David and I have an addiction. I have been infected with the fishing â€œbugâ€? for as long as I can recall. My earliest memories were sitting on my aunt and uncleâ€™s Lake Murray dock fishing for bream. I would keep my catch in a 5 gallon bucket and beg my dad to clean them so we could all have fish for dinner; he always obliged. I remember the trips to Carolina Beach where my dad and I would pier fish and I would convince him to let me stay when he was ready to go in for dinner. I would fish late into the night and then stay even later to watch the men chum and fish for sharks until day break. As I left school and began a family, fishing took a back seat. Early in my career we lived a stoneâ€™s throw from Lake Toho in Kissimmee, FL and regretfully, in the six years we were there, I never fished it. I spent a little time fishing in neighborhood ponds and on golf courses but was unable to spend much time â€œon the waterâ€?. Fast forward 10 years or so and I am back in the Queen City area calling on a large grocer in Salisbury. I established a good relationship with a key customer that fished, seriously fished. For the next 15 years we made several trips annually to the New River Valley to chase smallies. That time on the river hooked me. The NRV is still my favorite place to fish, if you have never visited you should make a point to go and hire a local guide for a float the first few times, I promise you will not regret it. Locally, I spent time on Lake Norman and Lake Wylie fishing with friends. I fished out of their boats or mine and thoroughly enjoyed it. The downside was being limited to a few friends to fish with and it taking a bit of time and prep to even make a quick trip. I had fished out of float boats on rivers for years and was doing the same locally on the Broad and Catawba as often as possible. On one of my floats I ran into a kayaker, he shared information with me on the local kayak community and took the time to introduce me to several people who shared his passion for kayak fishing.

Those early introductions peaked my interest and in short time I was in a plastic boat and my circle of like- minded men and women grew. I was introduced to groups/brotherhoods of kayakers. The participants varied, from the casual angler to dedicated tournament fishermen and everything in between. The one common denominator was a love of the outdoors and fishing. I have enjoyed my time with all of them and developed a passion for the tournament side. In the past 6 years I have fished scores of tournaments, grown immensely as a fisherman and built many, many great friendships. The struggle to find a friend to fish with is over, I now know dozens and dozens of people who share my addiction and will join me for time on the water at the drop of a hat but if that fails Mo will go (my dog). In the past 7 or 8 years of tournament kayak fishing I have fished small local events and huge national events. I have been blessed with a fair amount of success on various kayak trails but that is second to the relationships I have developed in the community. I met Vinny Fererri about 7 years ago and started fishing the Queen City Kayak Bass Fishing Trail from the first tournament he organized. I actually was fortunate to win the inaugural event 6 years ago and it took me that long to secure another win in a QCKBF event, and I have fished them all (except one). QCKBF, driven by Vinny, has grown like wildfire. QCKBF started with 25 or so guys and 0 sponsors and has grown to one of the strongest trails in the country with 30+ sponsors drawing close to 100 anglers to monthly events. The trail has regular tournament anglers, men and women that range from 15 to 60+, from beginners to guys who have counted on fishing elite boat trails to pay the bills. Vinny refers to the QCKBF as family and he means it, the members take care of each other and donâ€™t hesitate to help others in the Queen City area when there is a need. So, in closing Iâ€™ll repeat, I have an addiction and be forewarned it is contagious, all you have to do to catch it is to come join us some weekend! See you on the water, tight lines.

I call it â€œThe Hymnal.â€? Weâ€™ve all seen it and most of us have been there. A fly fisherman staring searchingly into an open fly box, hopelessly shuffling through fly patterns like a daydreaming parishioner who missed which page the song was on. He knows the right choice is in there, but only by the grace of God will he find it.

Few things in fly fishing can be more intimidating or frustrating than struggling with which fly to show to picky fish. We have literally thousands of distinct fly patterns to choose from and they all come in multiple sizes, colors and local variations â€“ even though weâ€™re really only trying to mimic like four or five different kinds of bugs. The worst part is, that at one point or another, each one of those patterns is the â€œRight Fly.â€? And of course if you donâ€™t have the right fly, you wonâ€™t catch any fish, so the only reasonable thing to do is to change flies until you happen upon that golden pattern that was tucked into a long neglected corner of the fly box. The problem with the solution above, is that changing flies takes time and if you do it often enough, will chew up enough leader and tippet, that youâ€™ll have to re-rig the whole dang thing. Itâ€™s a slippery slope and not less than a few anglers have spent more time tying knots than they have fishing on a given day. If you are one of these folks, or maybe a novice angler for whom fly selection is a total mystery, let me suggest a simplified approach. Rather than get caught up in the details and pattern variations, try to understand that 95% of a troutâ€™s diet is made up of nothing more than little brown bugs.

My personal belief is that these flies work on the same principle as the 200 foot high Golden Arches visible from the highway â€“ I know I shouldnâ€™t eat this crap, but dang does it look tasty. John Gierach famously noted that fly-tiers have been trying for many years to craft a fly that would not catch a fish. The truth is that there is rarely, if ever, only one â€œRight Fly.â€? If fish arenâ€™t responding, itâ€™s more likely that the problem is in the rigging or presentation. Rather than spend precious minutes cycling through every pattern in the box, pair a juicy cheeseburger with a convincing â€œlittle brown bugâ€? and trust that it will get some bites if fished properly. From there, work on casting and presentation fundamentals or just move along and find some more receptive fish. If that doesnâ€™t work, then it might be time to revisit that prayer book and trust your luck to the man upstairs. Ok, my previous statement was a massive oversimplification and probably shouldâ€™ve included a trigger warning for all of the flytying entomologists who just threw this magazine down in disgust. As you progress as a fly fisherman, of course it will expand your skill set and appreciation to learn more about the insects that trout feed on. My point is that you donâ€™t have to know it all to be a successful fisherman and you should not let the lack of detailed pattern knowledge deter you from enjoying the sport. This is especially true if you are nymph fishing. My advice to people who struggle with fly selection is to limit the amount of patterns in your box, but have enough of each that you do carry, that it wonâ€™t be the end of the world if you lose a few. Find generic patterns that could imitate quite a few nymphs and cover several bases at once. I like a fly that sticks to base colors like Olive, Brown, Yellow, or Peacock and has a soft hackle or body material that adds some texture and movement in the water. These flies wonâ€™t imitate any one thing the best, but they are broad enough to fit the bill no matter what the fish want to eat. If youâ€™re really at a loss, have the guy at the fly shop help pick a few productive local patterns and trust that he knows that heâ€™s doing. Donâ€™t overlook the junk food. Eggs, Squirmy Worms, Mops, Buggers, anything pink, chartreuse, fluorescent orange are all examples of what I call Cheeseburgers. They arenâ€™t meant to match any hatch or win you favor with the pattern purists out there, but son of a gun they catch fish. Whether itâ€™s curiosity or some genetic predisposition towards opportunistic feeding, these patterns often earn strikes when your most natural imitation receives less respect 16 CHARLOTTE/PIEDMONT

offers views out to the side of your boat underwater upwards of 180 feet on either side. This locates fish you would not see using standard down-pointing sonar. It enables me to discover potentially productive areas without making a cast. With functional electronics, you cut a lot of time searching and focus on productive areas. What You Need: A tournament angler might feel the need for all the bells and whistles to be competitive. This can lead to six or more graphs on the boat. That’s ok, but it can be overkill for someone who is recreational fishing. Some basic features, however, have become must-haves. Navigation and mapping systems are important. Speed, time and temperature data are useful. A color monitor of 9 inches or larger is nice for ease of use. I would choose a unit with a few buttons and smooth functionality. Any of the notable three brands will suffice. However, having too much information can be overwhelming. Paying The Price: When you see boats with four 16-inch TVs on the console and more on the front deck, rest assured that it set the owner back a bit. You can leave a hole in your wallet if you’re not careful. I believe in buying what you need, not what you see. For a few hundred bucks, you can get a decent sonar fish finder that will cover basic needs. However, if you find you need an upgrade, there are units out there that cost more than a small compact car. But really ask yourself: “Do I need the electronics to play YouTube videos, or do I need them to navigate, locate and catch fish?” It’s purely personal and a choice for each to make. Electronics are an excellent tool to help you catch more fish. They make fishing more enjoyable, but it’s wise to consider what you want and need. Learning to use all the available tools is another subject all together.

There are good reasons for having these electronics, but I believe there’s also overkill. As a tournament bass angler, having good electronics allows you to compete against the fish in ways that did not exist in the past. Although sonar capability has been around for decades, using this technology to locate fish and eventually catch them is a game-changer. Let’s discuss the benefits of electronics, how much you need, and the cost associated with them. Benefits: Competitive bass anglers must make pressure-packed decisions. Many of them are made based on data picked up from electronics on the boat. ust a 20-minute drive north of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Little River Inlet and the Intracoastal Waterway (ICW) that snakes behind it offer yearround fishing in generally calm, shallow water. Check it out on a map, and you’ll instantly know this is a fishy place. The inside waters here are bordered by marshes, parklands and plenty of drainages positioned perfectly for pumping baitfish, small shrimp and other tasty fodder right into the main channels on a dropping tide. It’s an ideal set-up for anglers to connect with speckled trout, red-

fish, black drum, flounder, sheepshead and even an occasional gray trout (a.k.a. weakfish). “The ocean water from Little River Inlet refreshes this strip of Intracoastal Waterway,” said Capt. Bob Strange, of Strange Magic Fishing Charters (www. strangemagiccharters.com; 843-274-1082). “We spend a lot of time working the backwaters here—the creeks, the drainages, the coves.” Strange predominately targets speckled trout, redfish and sheepshead in early spring, adding black drum and flounder in April. He’ll expand his efforts to waters outside Little River Inlet once the waters stabilize at about 70 degrees in May and June, as Spanish mackerel, king mackerel and additional species arrive. “Our early-season action is a lot fun,” noted Strange. “The ICW can be a busy place once the summer gets rolling, but in March and April it sees very little boating traffic. That means once you find the speckled trout you can usually have ’em all to yourself.” From his 22’ Pathfinder, Strange arms clients with 6’6” Shimano spinning rods with a medium action and fast tips. Shimano 2500 or 3000 series reels filled with 10- to 20-pound braid are a good match. He uses a 15- to 20-pound fluorocarbon leader and then the terminal tackle. Strange fishes live mud minnows, cut bait or fresh shrimp about 25 percent of the time and artificials the rest of the way. He favors small jigs tipped with Berkley Gulp! Swim Mullets, Z-Man trailers or similar soft plastics with white or chartreuse his most productive colors. The lures can be cast and jigged back to the boat or worked beneath popping corks. “Oyster bars make a great starting point, but don’t overlook creek bends, docks and the like,” explained Strange. “Any of these can be a hot spot. Transition areas work great, too, especially where you find shell banks changing over to grass or a drainage emptying onto a flat. Add in a little structure, and you’re in great shape.” While it is advisable to start your search with some hired help, anglers looking to trailer their own vessels can launch at a public ramp at the base of the RT. 17 bridge where it crosses the ICW between Little River and North Myrtle Beach. Great Streams and Craft Beverages Await in Hendersonville, N.C. Photo by Nick Carter

f you’re an angler who enjoys following up a day on mountain trout streams with a refreshing craft beverage or two, cast your attention to the Blue Ridge mountain town of Hendersonville. This North Carolina town, about 22 miles south of Asheville, offers miles of stocked trout waters, as well as the popular Hendersonville Cheers! Trail. The two resources make it possible to spend the day catching three types of trout – rainbow, brown and brook – while spending an evening exploring three types of craft beverages – beer, wine and hard cider. First, the fishing part. North Mills River is the prime trout stream in the Hendersonville area. The river’s 4-mile section of delayed harvest waters receives an annual infusion of 11,000 trout from N.C. Wildlife, divvied between brook, rainbow and brown. Spring is a great time to fly fish the delayed harvest waters of North Mills River because no trout have been harvested since Sept. 30. Another hot spot for trout fishing is just across the Henderson County line toward Brevard. The Davidson River offers miles of public trout waters that receive annual stockings of 16,500 fish. Other lesser-known spots for fishing near Hendersonville include

three streams on the eastern side of Henderson County, about 20 to 30 minutes from downtown. Rocky Broad River has a 1.2-mile stretch of hatchery support waters from Rocky River Lane to the Rutherford County line near Chimney Rock, while Cane Creek, near the Fletcher community, has 1.5-mile stretch of hatchery supported waters. For those who really want a unique experience, Little River in DuPont State Recreational Forest provides not only a scenic setting for trout fishing, but also a unique one. Delayed harvest waters flow through undisturbed mountains and over several notable waterfalls. Those waterfalls were immortalized on Hollywood’s silver screen in The Last of the Mohicans, as well as the backdrop for the exploits of Katniss Everdeen in the original Hunger Games movie. When the fishing is done, the Cheers! Trail awaits. The trail is one of North Carolina’s best, featuring 16 craft producers offering a variety of experiences. Beer fans love Sierra Nevada’s tasting room, which is one of the largest on the East Coast and features an expansive patio and outdoor amphitheater, while Bold Rock Hard Cider has emerged as a national leader in the hard cider industry and regularly hosts live music (indoors and outdoors), along with cidery tours and a food truck. Several craft producers on the trail create small-batch beverages prized for their quality and originality. Three breweries – Southern Appalachian, Triskelion and Guidon – are within a few blocks of each other in the Depot District, while Sanctuary Brewing Co. is only a few blocks away on Main Street. othing is more demanding in light-tackle fishing than to spot a fish and make a cast to it without much time to get ready. Speed and accuracy are the keys to a perfect presentation that results in a strike. Several species of gamefish invade relatively shallow water in search of food as the incoming tide floods an area. Catching them sometimes requires you to see them so you can present a bait or lure. Your target species might be striped bass in San Francisco Bay or in coastal areas throughout the northeast. Jumbo bluefish charge across the skinny portions of Chesapeake Bay each spring because the menhaden are there. Redfish might be your target in Texas and along the Gulf Coast. Down in Florida, the shallows are full of life with species such as bonefish, permit, tarpon, jacks, sharks and other critters. Concentration is critical in spotting fish or in determining signs of fish. It’s a mental discipline as well as a physical one. If you’re working off-color water, start by scouting the surface for any signs of activity. It could be a swirl or a boil or surface water being pushed by moving fish. Your goal is to identify anything different from the surrounding water. Expand your search area to waters a considerable distance away. Don’t overlook slicks, muds or anything else out of the ordinary.

When the water is shallow and a fish noses down to eat something on or near the bottom, its tail often lifts above the surface and can be spotted at a significant distance. Species such as redfish may lift their caudal fin in the air and it, too, can be seen. Tails or fins may only show for a moment or two, but if you are concentrating, you should be able to spot them. It takes practice to see fish, even in clear water. The trick involves staring through the surface of the water as if it were a pane of glass. Focus on the bottom or just above it. Your eyes should scan the area as if they were a radar antenna, moving right, left and center. And don’t forget to look far out across the water to detect the flash of a tail, wakes, birds or any other signs of activity. Some species may lie motionless waiting to ambush a tasty meal, while others keep moving. As you scan through the surface, a silver colored fish might look black. When a fish picks a morsel off the bottom, it creates a small puff of mud. Experienced eyes identify this very slight discoloration in the water, and the angler knows that something was just there. If you continue to see fresh puffs, cast a bait or lure in the area. The results could be impressive. Presenting a bait or lure to a fish you can see is certainly the ultimate angling challenge. Putting yourself in those situations can be very demanding, requires total concentration, and, at times can prove frustrating. At the end of the day, you might be tired, but the successful experience will brighten your memory for days to come.

After years of drastically curtailed federal seasons and bag limits, NOAA fisheries voted in February to implement state management for private anglers fishing for red snapper in the Gulf of Mexico. Under an exempted fishing permit (EFP), the five Gulf Coast states—Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana and Texas— managed the private recreational Photo courtesy of Capt. The EFP was the result of a multi-year effort to give the states control after the status quo federal management approach reduced the Gulf red snapper season to an astounding three days for private anglers in federal waters. “State management of Gulf red snapper has been a game-changer for anglers,” said Kellie Ralston, with the American Sportfishing Association. “Because of their targeted data collection and their ability to quickly respond to what’s going on inseason, each of the Gulf states has been able to provide substantial red snapper seasons for the private recreational sector. None of this would have been possible without the leadership of the states, the Secretary of Commerce and our Congressional champions. Making this management a long-term reality through the formal approval of Amendment 50 ensures this great success story will continue for years to come.” At the Gulf Council meeting in January, each state gave a report on their data collection program and emphasized their ability to incorporate local factors to ground-truth the harvest data and to nimbly adjust the season. This state-level approach provides far greater flexibility in fishery management versus the federal one-size-fits-all, static regulations. Anglers trust the state systems because they are responsive and the regulations match the conditions seen on the water. With an independent analysis of red snapper populations set to be released in the next few months, anglers are hopeful for continued gains in the management of the Gulf red snapper fishery.
