I
t’s snook season in Florida, and despite a closure to harvest for much of the state’s west coast, the next couple months offer great action in the world’s best location to target the state’s most iconic inshore/ nearshore gamefish. Snook strike aggressively, fight hard and grow large—into the 20and 30-pound range of true slob snook. The Florida state record weighed 45.75 pounds. It was caught by Heather Lynn Conners near Sebastian in 2015. But even the slot fish—those in the 28- to 33-inch range you’re allowed to keep one of—will test your gear. It’s one of the most explosive and exciting gamefish on the planet. Snook are extremely temperature sensitive, and tactics vary according to the season. From the beaches and nearshore, where they spend their summers, they will move over the next few months seeking warmer water in sheltered winter haunts. First, you’ll find them in deep water adjacent to the shallow flats. Then, driven by cooling sea temps, they’ll push all the way up into the creeks and rivers, residential canals, warm water discharge from power plants, upper estuaries, and anywhere they can find suitable water conditions. The harsher the winter, the more pronounced the move. Fall through winter is the time when big, line-snapping snook will hunker down in areas that might seem highly unlikely to the uninformed. With the mild winters of the last decade, much has been made of the northward spread of snook. A tropical species, they historically thrived only on the southern coasts of Florida, up to about to about Sebastian in the Atlantic and Tampa in the Gulf. However, in recent years, snook have set up shop farther north, in areas that would have been unheard of a decade ago. These days, it’s possible to target snook at Homosassa and farther north along the Nature Coast of the Gulf and up toward Jacksonville in the Atlantic. They have also shown up much farther north. This summer, Coastal Angler Magazine reported on a juvenile snook caught in a cast net way up in Winyah Bay, South Carolina. First timers seeking to do battle with snook should hire a captain. Along with being big and strong, large female snook are notoriously smart and usually require specialized tackle, techniques and a good deal of patience. Their tendency to hole up in the structure of mangroves, rocks and bridge and pier pilings makes break-offs common, and the expertise of a good guide increases your chances of actually landing one. The good news is, snook have been relatively unmolested by anglers during the closed season of the last three months. Now is as good a time as any to fool a big cow nosed into the current under some residential canal dock. They feed best in low light of the early mornings and late evenings when there’s a rising or falling tide. The stronger tides around the new and full moons are optimal for catching them. Keep that in mind when booking your trip to Florida’s snook fisheries, and you could find yourself experiencing the fishing trip of a lifetime.

GOLDEN CRAPPIE CAUGHT IN ARKANSAS

avid Allen Sisson, of Magnolia, Arkansas, caught a fish on July 27 that few anglers have ever seen or even heard of: a golden crappie. Sisson was vertical jigging a brushpile at the 3,000-acre Columbia County, Ark. water supply reservoir when he caught the unusual fish. “The pictures still don’t do it justice,” Sisson said. “It was amazing, and I just feel blessed to have caught it.” Arkansas Game and Fish Commission District Fisheries Supervisor and avid crappie angler Andy Yung also was excited to hear about the catch. “I had never seen a golden crappie in my life,” Yung said. “I’ve read about them, but it’s something you just never see in the wild.” Yung explained the gold coloration is caused by a genetic mutation called Xanthism, similar to what causes a rare animal to be an albino or the black pigmentation in some extremely rare cases of deer and other animals. Xanthic crappie not only are lottery-drawing rare, but their coloring can hinder their ability to survive. These sorts of animals usually stand out from the others and are typically eaten by predators long before they reach maturity. Sisson said his golden catch didn’t end up in a frying pan, but has been taken to a taxidermist in Magnolia to mount.

his summer has definitely been a hot one, and the Dog Days are just beginning. Forecast for LAKE HICKORY & RHODHISS By: Joey Randall Denver Tackle Co., and Bizz Baits
I
n September, the biggest thing you’ve got to remember is this: transition. It’s when the lakes start to turnover, which is when the oxygen in the water stratifies. Instead of a deep thermocline, which is a dead layer at the bottom with no oxygen in it, it stratifies so that that layer completely just immerses itself throughout the whole lake. And from that, you get a period of transition where fish either start to move back towards the creek, or they’ll start to move shallow from their deeper summer homes. Early in the month, bass are still in their deeper waters and eating at nights like they have been for the hotter weather we’ve just endured. You can find success using slower presentations, dragging plastics along the bottom or fishing finesse. That’s what seems to work best for those first two weeks of September. One of my absolute favorite baits is the Bizz Baits Dizzy Diamond. If you haven’t familiarized yourself with it, now’s as good a time as it gets. Then we hit the second half of September. The transition begins. Bass begin moving out of the main channels into the creeks. They start biting shallower. They start biting topwater more often. They become more shad oriented. You know, your typical more “fall” stuff. In late September, I start making my transition from plastics to moving baits; spinnerbait type lures. A lot of topwater with buzzbaits. The color white is starting to become a common theme on all of your moving baits. A point of emphasis when looking to achieve success fishing in the month of September is going to be to really bounce around. Try to locate one of these two things – A) fish themselves or B) which depth zone they’re in and want to be. There will be bass shallow and there will be bass deep, and there will be bass in between suspending. They’re going to be all over the place. The turnover this year isn’t going to be as severe, as we’ve had a lot of water moving through the system, but it’s still going to happen. It’s not difficult to run patterns in September, but it IS difficult to develop patterns. It’s important to have realistic expectations this month, don’t expect to get out there and just slay ‘em. The fish are scattered and if they’re not biting, it can be really, really tough. But, what’s sweeter than the payoff after a long day? 2 CHARLOTTE/PIEDMONT

ou can ask 100 anglers what’s the best way to catch fish and you are likely to receive a hundred different answers. Ask the same anglers what’s the most important tool they use to catch fish and the answers will get more similar. Some will say, the hook, the line etc. But certainly the majority will say: the rod. What you choose to handle, your reel, line, hook, and bait might be one of your most important fishing decisions. A good (or mediocre) rod can make or break a good fisherman. Each and every rod is designed to handle a certain “type” of fishing, presentations, and baits. We won’t get in to all of that right now. I’ve competed and fished for over 25 years. Sometimes side by side with some of this countries’ top anglers. When choosing what rods meet our requirements, we mostly think alike. Most important, is my rod sensitive? Can my rod support my hookset? Can my rod fight fish AND get them in the boat? Can my rod, repeat, and endure this, time after time? I have found few rods that can answer yes to that set or questions. I have been through more than my fair share of fishing rods. Back in the early 2000’s, I even had a rod manufacturer, create a rod line in my name called the Michelle Armstrong Extreme Series. They were wrapped in camo, “real” camo. And they were amazing. But like many rod companies, they didn’t survive the big industry. For a girl, I have a pretty mean hookset and have snapped many rods right off the bat. I’ve had fish get off because the rod couldn’t put up a good enough fight etc... I am most certainly NOT going to bash any rod manufacturer so don’t ask me to. However, I will give praise, where praise is due. Bass Pro Shops is my happy place, so it’s not a surprise that one of my favorite rods can be found there. I have several Johnny Morris Platinum Signature rods. They answer “yes” to all
of the above. I love the sensitivity these rods offer. My “go to” of this series are the spinning rods. But the casting rods are wonderful as well. Next in my rod locker, I have many, and let me stress many rods made by Powell. They answer “yes, yes, and YES” to my needs. They offer three different lines, The Max, The Inferno, and The Endurance. Most of my arsenal is made up of the Endurance line with a few of the Inferno’s thrown in. My ultimate favorite is the Endurance 735 (I have 2 want more). I have to add, the above answered questions are crucial, but there is a little nugget that we all don’t see coming. That is the effects this sport had on one’s body. It is no doubt a strenuous, repetitive sport. Over the years, as a “seasoned” angler, I had developed some issues such as tennis elbow and tendonitis while using certain rods. Countless hours casting and reeling, all while having a foot on the trolling motor, head mostly down, fighting waves, what do we expect? My Johnny Morris rods are lighter that most I’ve used. Since partnering with Powell, the pains in my arms have been remedied. Not to sound like a geriatric infomercial, these things certainly make a difference in how long you can expect to participate in this sport...and enjoy it. Make sure your rod answers yes to your needs. It is one of your most important fishing decisions. Now grab your rod, and go catch fish!

It’s All About The Bait By: Capt. Cefus McRae, Nuts & Bolts of Fishing Series 201 Woods Lane, Hartwell, GA 30643
f you open a hatch on my boat, you’ll Iassortment find a dozen or more tackle trays with an of hooks, weights, swivels, and of
course lots of lures. As a matter of fact, you might think you were looking down the aisle of a tackle store by the numbers of lures that I’ve stuffed in there. As anglers, we need to have whatever we think the fish might be biting that day…and we need to have lots of it. Right? Diving plugs, suspending plugs, topwater plugs, swimbaits, soft plastics, jigs, spoons, bucktails…and it goes on and on.
The real secret with artificial baits is to mimic the food source gamefish want to eat. Or, to pitch a lure that causes an instinctive reaction strike. I honestly don’t know whether I’m getting an “I’m hungry” strike or a “reaction” strike many times. I’m just happy when the fish takes the lure. In my opinion, the best bait is going to be whatever the fish happen to be eating in their natural environment. And that typically boils down to live bait. I’m not aware of any gamefish that can solely survive on plastic, wood or nylon. They have to eat other critters. And if you can hone in on that natural quarry, then you’ve got a fighting chance at catching a fish. Whether you’re presenting a living creature, or mimicking it with something manmade.
#2. Don’t overcrowd your bait well. You can’t put 20 pounds of potatoes in a 10 pound sack. Frisky baits need room to move without constantly bumping into each other, or bumping into the walls of your bait well. You’ll know you’ve put too many in, when you pull a herring or pogie out and it has a reddish nose. I’d rather have 50 great baits, than 100 baits that are about to expire. #3. Consider the water temperature and oxygen content of the bait tank at the bait shop, and try to maintain that in your own bait well. That might mean adding some ice during the day. Pulling in 85 degree lake water into your bait well will have a detrimental effect on your minnows. Bubblers work OK. Recirculators are also good. But you may want to consider adding an oxygen diffuser system to your wells to really keep baits fresh all day, or even overnight. #4. Have some sort of filtration on your bait well. This comes in a variety of forms, and manufacturers offer lots of options. The stress of being in a confined space causes fish to exude a lot of ammonia, and that’s not an ideal environment for bait. Open your hatch regularly to let some of it escape as a gas. #5. Do your best to keep your bait well as full as it can be. A partially filled bait well will ‘slosh’ around and that does bad things to your bait. Imagine being in a washing machine… that’s what it’s like to your prized and expensive baits.
Minnows, smaller fish, crustaceans, bugs, worms, eels, even rodents and reptiles all represent food sources to top-of-the-food-chain gamefish. So if I have the opportunity, I’m going to try to fill my bait well with something tasty and frisky that will fit on a hook.
#6. You want to keep your bait frisky and appealing when it’s on the hook. So match the hook size to the size of the bait…not the size of fish you think you might catch. A properly matched hook will allow the bait to swim freely and they will remain alive much longer; giving you more opportunity to hook up with a monster.
Frisky is a definite key for success. Live baits require some special attention, if you want to keep them at their peak friskiness all day. Here’s a couple tips that can make the difference between fishing with great baits and not-so-great baits.
Finally, when a live bait does finally expire. Don’t throw it back in the water. Put it in a small container with water and a few tablespoonfuls of salt in it. The salt will help to toughen the bait; and when the bite slows down, cut those bluebacks, greenies, or pogies into tiny chunks and use as chum. You’ll be amazed at how you can turn the bite back on.
#1. Buy your live bait from a reputable source that has LOTS of customers. If they have a lot of customers, that means they’re going through lots of bait, and that means they get replenished frequently. Which means you’re getting fresh bait too.

I
’m showing my age but I recently heard the old pop song “See You in September” by The Happenings. It’s a sappy song that has nothing to do with fishing, yet it made me think, “ahhh September – shorter, cooler days, the first cold fronts of fall, decreasing water temps, and increasingly active fish!” I know, I’ve got it bad. Of course, early to mid-September can be a hot extension of August. But once a few “nor’easters” blow through and the days get noticeably shorter, local waters begin to cool more quickly. By the end of the month, the forage and predators should be in fairly predictable areas, and the fall bite begins. On Lake Norman, that means increasingly better topwater opportunities for hybrid stripers and spotted bass, with the occasional striper and everpresent white perch in the mix. At least the perch are usually larger than the early/mid-summer specimens.
Finally, if hot weather and water temps in the upper 80’s persist into September, catfish (blues) plus spots and hybrids can be found along the river channel flood plain, or in the channel itself, from Marker 10 to Cowans Ford Dam. If herring are dying off and floating in a given area, use live herring, large threadfins, or gizzard shad fished 1540 ft. deep in water depths from 30 ft. and out. Planer boards or Redi-rig floats get the baits out from under your boat, and can be especially useful on bright days. Once the water cools, look for cats in the same areas where the aforementioned bait schools and surface action are found. Fresh cut bait and live baits slow trolled on Carolina or Santee rigs are effective. Hopefully I’ll see you in September, with a bent rod in your hand, yelling Fish On!
At dawn and dusk, look for surface feeding activity around major and secondary points and adjacent bays - near creek mouths from mid-lake to Terrapin Creek. Flats and humps along the river channel above the 150 bridge can be very active too. Large schools of bait will gather in these areas before they begin their annual push into the creeks, which typically coincides with the full moon in October. If you can find schools of shad or herring on your sonar in 15-30 ft. of water before sunup or about an hour or so before dark, you’re probably in an area where “it’s getting ready to happen”. Walking lures like Spooks, Spook Jr’s, or Top Dogs are favorites of mine, but many other baits work too. Buzzbaits, broken back Rapalas or Redfins, spinnerbaits, crankbaits, bucktails, swimbaits on light lead jigheads – the options are many. It’s smart to have at least a few different designs rigged and ready because the action can be brief, and sometimes even blitzing fish can be unexpectedly picky. I like to think in terms of baits that run only on the surface, just under the surface, or lures that are versatile enough to fish up, down, or in between. As a rule, fish shallow to deeper as the day brightens, and deeper to shallow as the sun sets. The middle and bottom of the water column become especially important as the surface bite slows down. For colors, I like clear for my spooks with a feathered tail hook, but I also like combinations of red, white, and chartreuse. Of course, shad and herring colors are good too. Keep in mind that bigger is not always better on Norman. If you’re not getting bites, go smaller and slower. These fish are often chasing juvenile baits and matching the hatch may be needed. If you’re so inclined and there aren’t too many boats in the way, pitching or trolling live baits into or near this activity is fun and effective. This technique often produces bigger fish than artificials do. Live baits also offer the ready option of being fished further down in the water column as needed. ith September arriving, luckily there is light at the end of the tunnel. Kids will be returning to school, hunting season kicks in and the boat traffic will begin to die down. Sunlight hours are starting to get shorter and the evenings are beginning to get cooler, prolonging the morning bite. Bait fish can be found starting to move into creeks and channels and can be spotted breaking the surface or found using electronics. Choose a bait that mimics your baitfish (minnows or shad). Throw a rooster tail or a crappie jig into banks and retreive it into deeper water. I prefer one with a twisting tail for extra attention. This is a fun tactic for a consistent bite and a wide array of species. You can catch almost any species doing this and you’ll never know what you might reel in. Play around with different retrieval speeds and depths to see where the sweet spot is. Crappie will continue to be caught all over the lake long lining or fishing using minnows. Make sure to use an ultra light rod to be able to detect the bite. Anything heavy and you may never know it happened. Catfish will continue to hold deeper during the day and move onto flats during evening hours to feed. Find a ledge from deep to shallow and youll find the fish. Cut bait such as shad or white perch are always a good choice. Follow the bait for bass. Utilize a bait that mimics the bait you’re following but also is eratic enough to stand out from the school of bait. As always stay safe and introduce someone to the great outdoors!

eptember is the official last month of summer. Soon most of the jet skis and recreational boaters will be off the water. Most of the month, depending on weather patterns, fish will still be in the traditional summer pattern. This means different things for different species.
bridges is a great way to beat the heat and catch some nice crappies. The new LED submersible or floating lights make night fishing much easier than in the past. They draw a lot less current from your battery and put out as much or more light that the old style lanterns.
September is big bait month for largemouth bass. Large baits like the Zoom® Ol’ Monster worms and the Strike King® Bull worms are great baits for late summer bass. The color can vary depending on the water color but If I could only have two colors they would be black and green pumpkin. Fish them over points or underwater humps and be prepared from some real lunkers, big baits often catch big fish.These baits can be fished a lot of different ways but you can’t go wrong with the traditional Texas Rigged or Carolina Rigged worm. Top water frogs will catch good fish over the grass on Tuckertown Lake early in the morning or on overcast days.
We are seeing some nice catfish coming in from all the lakes. The biggest ones seem to be coming in from Badin Lake but all three lakes are catching good fish. Badin lake has a “Trophy Limit” of only one blue catfish greater than 32 inches may be taken per day. The traditional baits (shad, sunfish, chicken livers) are doing great. Catfish Charlie® and Little Stinker™ dip baits are catching good numbers of fish in the 2-15lb range.

The Science Line The Contradiction of Early Morning Fishing By: Jake Bussolini

ver the several years that I have been writing about freshwater fishing, I have been criticized for my theories related to the best months, weeks, days and times of the day to fish. For years nearly every credible fishing magazine has published tables to guide anglers to the best fishing times based on the positions of the sun or the moon. It is not my purpose here to address that entire argument but to deal only with the portion of it that deals with the best time of the day to fish.
Like nearly every angler, as a young boy I was taught by my Dad that early morning fishing was mandatory to insure a good daily catch. As an obedient son, born in the 1930’s, I was never permitted to doubt the wisdom of an adult, especially my Dad. After all, he had the wisdom of age and street smarts. All I had was book learning so I blindly followed his guidance on this subject.
fish were caught between 10 am and 6 pm, with the peak always occurring between 1 pm and 5 pm when the fish were getting ready to go to the shallow water to feed. Of course, I did make some adjustments in my technique during the tests. On very sunny days, I fished deeper when the sun was brightest, knowing that the suns reflection has a great effect on fish behavior. During the middle of the day, on sunny days, the fish will go deeper or look for structure to hide from the sun’s rays. I do believe that when the fish are in transition as they are when the sun begins to rise, there is a better chance of finding them near the drop offs. But based on data that I have collected I am sticking with my theory that late afternoon and early evening will produce the best catches on most freshwater bodies. As I moved through life and began to accumulate my own experiences, supported by a fine science-based college education, I was sitting in my boat on a freezing December morning waiting for the official sunrise to kick off a striper tournament. My thermos was empty of the hot coffee that has sustained me to this point. “Why am I here at this ungodly hour” I asked myself. “What is it that makes the fish want to bite my bait this early in the morning?” I couldn’t come up with an answer that provided any warmth but that moment changed my fishing process for the rest of my life. I talked to several experienced anglers about the morning issue and they all seemed to accept the morning fishing theory without question. The general consensus was that most predator fish come into the shallow water at night to feed on the smaller fish that reside in those waters. As the sun rises, the light signals that it is time for them to return to the deeper water for the remainder of the day. This meant that the predators were now on the move after sunrise, and knowing that provided guidance for anglers as to where these fish were located, moving from shallow to deeper water. This knowledge should permit better catches, hence, early morning fishing. There is one major flaw in this logic, I believed. If the predator fish have been feeding all night, possibly for eight hours, their stomachs would be full at sunrise. With full stomachs, why would they be interested in more food to supplement what was in their stomachs. Logic tells me that early morning was the worst time to expect a big catch. This fact intrigued me so I began doing specific research on the subject. Most anglers accept the fact that food is always a target of opportunity for nearly all species of fish. Even with full stomachs, a predator will nearly always attack a good meal if it is passed before him. BUT! Won’t they be more aggressive if their stomachs are empty? Logic says certainly they will. This would imply that the best time to catch lots of fish is in the late afternoon and early evening, before they move in for the nightly meal. Based on this possible theory, I began collecting data on all my fish catches. Of course, the only data that I could use was when I fished in early morning and late afternoon. This meant that in most cases I would collect data when I was traveling and fishing all day. For more than 5 years I gathered data on my catches and what a surprise I got when I finally tallied up the results. eptember can be another tough month to fish on Lake Wateree. The water levels typically tend to change a lot, as well as the temperatures starting to drop near the end of the month. Therefore fish are going to be on the move. Water levels and temperature play a big role in bass fishing this time of year. When water levels are low and the temperatures are high, fish will typically stay deep. Bass will gravitate towards ledges, creek channels, or any underwater structure in the 10-20’ range. Jigging spoons, big soft plastics, and jigs are all productive lures to fish. When the water levels start to rise, the Bass tend to move into the shallower water and back deeper into the creeks. Try finding grass in the backs of the creeks and rocky shore lines. Frogs and shaky head worms work well in the grass, while running Crankbaits and dragging jigs will work on the rocks. Crappie fishing in September is usually better at the upper end of the lake. There is more current at the upper end of the lake and the crappie will use the current breaks to ambush their food. Find brush
piles or laydown in 15-20’that may be used as a current break. In the mornings, crappie will be suspended above the brush piles. As the sun comes up and temperatures rise they will drop down deeper in the brush. Live minnows and vertical jigging artificials can be the most productive tactic. The catfish will start to school up and can be caught on live or cut bait. Fresh cut Bream, white perch, or shad are all good baits to use. Try drifting technique until the first bite, then anchoring down can be the best method this time of year. ou have seen it happening. You have heard about it from your friends. You know your neighbor does it. You think you want to try it, but have no idea where to start. What is IT? Well, kayak fishing, that’s what! Why is kayak fishing blowing up all around you? Kayak fishing is gaining popularity because it is a fun, affordable way to get out on the water, fish, and enjoy Mother Nature. Even if you are not fishing, being on the water in a kayak is one of the most relaxing ways to spend a cool morning or a beautiful sunset. Any angler you know will give you the same story. Fishing from the bank, or a pond is fun, but nothing compared to being able to get to untouched, unfished waters. It’s how I started. I purchased a cheap sit in kayak from a big box store; I grabbed my two rods, and ventured into Lake Wylie. I remember landing my first decent sized bass in a kayak. I think that bass is the reason I am where I am today. Many people ask me, what do I need to get started? In all, honestly the answer is very simple. Starting out does not need to be complicated. I am a believer in you get what you pay for, but sometimes, any kayak that fits your budget will have to be how you start. So find your budget, purchase a safe sit on top kayak, maybe one built for fishing. It will offer mounting options for rod holders and other gear, and usually has an upgraded seat. Purchase a Personal Flotation Device, one that will fit you, and be comfortable enough for you to wear all day. A good paddle, remember, this is your motor. A white light, and a whistle for safety reasons and the laws in the Carolinas require it. I personally would also have a first aid kit on board. Other than that, everything is optional! A handful of items and you are ready to hit the water! Many anglers use some sort of crate behind them to store fishing gear, Plano boxes, plastics, water and snacks, etc. Rod holders are usually attached to the crate as well, keeping your precious fishing rods safe while you land the big one.

We are finishing our 5th year of the trail. We are the largest tournament series in North and South Carolina, as well as the best paying. Where do I fish? The great thing about a kayak is you really do not need a big boat ramp to launch. Any pond, creek, or water you legally have access to, is the perfect place to start. Google will tell you all of the public launches on your large home waters. Find yourself a small cove or section of the lake to start, and get out and go fishing! The sport of kayak fishing will slow you down as an angler. You cannot cover a bunch of water like you can in a bass boat. You will get used to picking apart a section of a lake, or a piece of structure really well. Fishing, hooking, fighting, and landing the fish in a kayak is awesome!! You are right there for all of the action! Jumping at eye level, splashing you when the fish is near the kayak, lying on your lap when you land it! It hits all of your senses and is a huge adrenaline rush! It is inevitable, you are going to love kayak fishing. You will want to go all the time. So now what? You need a friend, or a group to share these experiences with. This is where I come in. I am Vinny Ferreri. I am 33 years old, married, and have an amazing 7 year old daughter who loves the water. I have been teaching Physical Education in CMS for the past 11 years. I got into kayak fishing as I described above, wanting to get off the bank. Fishing Public Water next to Private Land

always cringe when I hear a story regarding an altercation between an angler and a landowner. I cringe because while I am outwardly sympathetic to the angler that is telling it, a big part of my brain is screaming “You dumbass – what were you doing there in the first place?!” While there are some conflicts where one party is wholly in the wrong and the other wholly in the right, it’s my experience that a little bit of courtesy and common sense can go a long way in heading off negative interactions. Besides the fact that getting screamed at by an irate farmer doesn’t exactly contribute to the tranquility that we seek on the river, there can be serious consequences to landowner conflicts. Many of our best and most popular public trout streams are bordered by private land. Although conflicts are fairly rare, anglers need to know why they should be enthusiastically avoided and what to do if it happens. Three of the most pressing concerns are Safety, Legal and Future Access. The most obvious and immediate concern is safety. If a landowner, or anyone else, is willing to openly confront you, it must be assumed that they are prepared for the situation to escalate to violence. Regardless of who you think is in the wrong, it is your responsibility to do what is in your power to keep that escalation from happening. Anger met with more anger will not resolve the conflict, so keep calm, back away and diffuse the situation as much as you can. If the person is willing to talk to you, start a respectful dialogue and figure out where you supposedly erred. If they are not willing to talk, leave fast and fish someplace else. In North Carolina, with few exceptions, navigable waterways (basically anything you could float a kayak down) are considered part of the public trust. That means that legally, the public can access and utilize those waterways. That does not mean that an angler can cross over private land to access the water. There can also be some grey area surrounding what is considered navigable. Some landowners will provide posted access points, some will not. Use your common sense here. Even if you think you have a legal right to access, if it’s clear the landowner doesn’t want you there, find someplace else to go. Respect the property owner’s wishes and obey all posted signs and gates. Satisfied people are generally not the ones writing letters. By creating a conflict with a landowner, we’ve potentially motivated that person to press for reduced angler access. It doesn’t even take a face to face altercation to make this happen. The most common offense is a lack of respect for the property and the resource. Just a few of us littering, poaching, parking in undesignated areas, leaving gates open, and disobeying posted signs can damage the reputation of all anglers. If nine people treat an area with respect and the tenth trashes it, all the landowner sees is the trash. We need to go above and beyond by leaving the river in as good or
better condition than we found it and by calling out anglers who are not. In case you haven’t noticed, the trend has generally not been to open up more spaces for public fishing access. To maintain what we have, we need to burnish our reputation with landowners and show that not only are responsible anglers not a problem, but that we can actually be an asset. Showing honest respect and appreciation for our resources and the property around it is a responsibility of all anglers. When you’re up in the mountains, common sense and courtesy will take you a lot further than your ability to quote NC Riparian Rights. Keep the locals on our side and not only will you be able to enjoy fishing today, but you’ll contribute to keeping that resource available for years to come. GettingBy:Your Lead On! Dave Bergman Guide for FlyFishAdventure
S
o you have been fly fishing now for a year or two and you have traveled the road on the quest for bigger fish and robust numbers. You left the world of using dry flies exclusively and branched out to sinking nymphs. You even threw those large streamers and felt the thrill of a fish eating on the strip. Now you have a menagerie of flies in your box or boxes to conquer your local stream. You know every spot, you have fished this stream to what feels like over 500 times, but for some reason you still don’t pull consistent numbers and you feel as though something is still missing. You use all the streamers and nymphs your local fly shop recommends, and you know what a good run looks like. Maybe there just aren’t as many fish in those spots as you thought there were or they just “aren’t biting” or have that “lock jaw” as some of the old timers will say. Well I have news for you; that most likely isn’t the problem. You may need to get your lead on! I’ve seen it time and time again. A diligent nymph angler comes into the store looking for advice. “man, I cant seem to figure these fish out” they state. Of course I’m happy to help and I start recommending nymphs. As soon as I pick up the first fly they stop me in my tracks and say “I’m using those” once I hear that I ask, “are you putting any split shots on your line to get it down there?” and the answer 80% of the time is no, and the other 20% of the time its “well I use nymphs with bead heads so I don’t need them.” Yes, bead heads tied into your nymphs can help aid in getting the fly into the feeding column, but usually its not enough. You see, it goes a little something like this. The run you’re fishing has a brisk current, you chuck in your indicator nymph rig with a size 16 bead head pheasant tail nymph and nothing else thinking that bead head is going to get it down just inches from the bottom. It might reach the bottom, but it will reach the bottom about 20 feet further down stream from where the fish are feeding. That little size 16 nymph is as light as a feather even with the bead head, that water is moving at a force strong enough to move tree branches, so it will move your tiny nymph effortlessly where the water is strongest, near the surface.
seeing your offerings and has to make little to no effort to receive it. Now sometimes the fish really just don’t seem interested, then its time to change flies. Typically I find that it is not the fly you’re using (especially on stocked streams), but the presentation usually gets the job done. So never change your nymph or streamer until you have tried weighting them down. Before you change your fly put another weight on first. Then if that doesn’t work tie on something new and tantalizing. You are going to get hung up on rocks, and you are going to loose a fly or two, but those are a small sacrifice you make to get into some serious fish! Now what split shots should you get? I find two great sizes to always have on you are BB, and AAA. Normally two or three BB’s gets the job done. If you are like me, I use AAA or sometimes two, but they can get heavy. Split shots come in a plethora of shapes, sizes and materials. If you are not into using lead for environmental reasons, tin is always a fine option as well. As we may or may not know, when trout feed on nymphs they travel into the top of the run and post down near the bottom of the stream where the current is less vigorous. These fish see an absolute buffet of nymphs floating rite by there face and do not have to move far to snatch them up. That being said, a trout will not usually make the effort to get your little bead head nymph traveling fast closer to the surface. Now don’t get me wrong, trout will come up for your middle or surface column nymph or streamer every now and again when they are feeling tenacious enough. That is why you still catch some fish, but you want to maximize your numbers, right? Well the answer is putting weights above your nymph or streamer to get it down near the bottom as soon as your cast hits the top of the run. When you do this, you now have the advantage of putting your fly in front of the face of every fish in that run. You now have the confidence to know every fish is 18 CHARLOTTE/PIEDMONT

Season Opener:
Practice Makes Perfect. Less is More. Water. By: Joey Randall - Denver Tackle Co., and Bizz Baits
D
eer season starts usually around the second week of September in North Carolina. And its bow season right off the bat, as gun season really won’t kick in until November for the metro area, maybe late October for surrounding Piedmont areas. Get out and practice with your bow and get in as many shots as possible, from as many different angles. Practice your bow on flat ground. Practice your bow sitting down. Practice your bow standing in a tree stand. Have multiple targets in different areas so that you don’t end up stuck in a position that you’ve never been in before for the first shot. It might sound a little bit “off’, but I would try to stay out of your deer woods as much as possible when the season starts. The window for conducting a census has now passed so I want to talk about where you might try to locate deer in the beginning of the season. These deer are starting to rub their velvet off, if it’s not off already, and they’re done growing for the year. When formulating a strategy, particularly right now at the start of the season, it’s of upmost importance to enter and exit CLEANLY. When I say cleanly, I mean without getting busted or without leaving a whole lot of scent around. In this early part of the season, you don’t want to give these deer any idea you’re there, as much as possible. The more you encroach on deer and their habitats, the less you will see deer. Circling back – a lot of the best hunters will tell you to hunt less to see more deer. And as counterproductive as that may sound, it’s by God the honest truth. Every time you walk into deer woods, a deer will walk over your trail and know how long it’s been since you were there. I don’t mean that he’s checking his digital watch and saying “aw man, he was here thirty-five minutes and seventeen seconds ago”. I do mean, however, that he’ll know that you were there that morning. They’re not seeking your scent out. They’re stumbling across you as they’re working their way through the woods. So the more times that they pick up on you, the less times they’re going to frequent that area. That’s why the majority of us die hard hunters don’t hunt mornings, especially early in the season. You can hunt mornings if you have enough acreage and enough places to go – a lot of this is also based off of territory and how much land you have to work with. If you’ve got one hundred acres and you bounce around, not hitting the same place too many times, you’re going to be OK. If you’ve got fifteen acres, like I do, and you go to the same three spots every single time? They’re going to avoid all three of those spots. Keep the pressure low and you want to focus on water. When the season starts, you’re still getting eaten up by mosquito’s, yellow jackets, and all of the other annoying usual suspects that come along with it still being straight up hot outside. Just like September being a transitioning period for bass, it’s a transitioning time for deer as well. Difference being, you can see deer and you can see their movements. They have to go drink water when it’s hot. So if you’ve got a water source, the first thing I would do is locate where that source is and find the tracks around it. Once you’ve got tracks on the water source, start tracing those tracks back to an area. Hunt that water source. Trace the tracks back to a very hard wood, brushy type area. Clear cuts; Pine thickets that have just been cut down; Any type of briar. Just the nastiest stuff you can think of, that’s predominantly what we’d call a bedding area and where you’d see the biggest bucks in this type of weather and this time of year. Remembering to try to keep your impact to a minimum, you can dive into a place one time and come back a month later and you’ll probably be OK. If you dive into a hardcore area two or three times a week, they will desert that area.
Food is abundant. Food is everywhere. It’s difficult to hunt food at the beginning of the season since it’s so widely available. Unless you can find a certain thing that they’re really keen on, for example – if you live near a lake and arrowheads are growing at the end of the cove. I don’t know what it is about arrowheads, but they’ll tromp through anything to go eat arrowheads at the edge of water. As the month transitions, it’ll go from berries and new growth of any kind that they can eat on to things like acorns, persimmons, etc. Now, when persimmons start to fall, that’s a hot spot. That’s where you want to set up. Apple trees, as well, though that’s more prevalent in October. As the food starts to transition, you’ll start to find deer in more concentrated areas. A lot of hunters can bait. Bait is always a good option, but bow hunting over bait isn’t necessarily advisable. Many times it could be a twenty yard shot but a hunter will hit that spot three times a week, and that’s why you don’t see any deer in that spot anymore. Just trying to set up on deer pretty quickly as the food changes is a pretty good way to catch some deer this time of year. My number one focus is finding that water source. Just think about this time of year for deer the same way you’d think about your own work day. You’re outside working all day, doing whatever it is that you’re doing throughout the day, and you get home and need that tall glass of water before you call it a night. Well, that’s exactly what that deer is going to do before he goes and lays down. Deer don’t sweat, so they need a ton of water in the heat. When the heat of the day breaks and the fish start biting, the deer are probably headed toward the water source too.

I
’ve been teaching NC Concealed Carry Handgun courses for quite some time and I’ve always enjoyed teaching this class. I especially like the dialogue I have with my students. So many people are concerned about their safety and that of their families. They want to feel as though they are protected. They are looking to arm themselves not only with a firearm, but also with knowledge. One thing I mention before I close each class is this: you are not ready. I get a lot of confused stares when I say this. Sitting in a class all day listening to a person talk about safety and law does not prepare you for the realities of the world we live in. Shooting 30 rounds into an immobile target does not make you ready to react to a deadly threat. It takes more training. Much more training. I’m thankful that the state of NC requires education. I don’t know a single person who has been hurt by education. Requiring its citizens to become trained is something I will always stand behind. I just wish there were a requirement for additional training. It’s my opinion that everyone who wants to carry a concealed handgun should seek out advanced training. Training that will put you in real-world situations. Help you develop decision-making skills in the blink of an eye. Help you be more proactive rather than reactive to certain situations. In other words, recognizing the possibility of danger or violence before it happens so you can get safe. And if you can’t get safe, reacting from a trained mindset. Heading to the range is always a fun time. But if you are going to an indoor range that employs shooting “lanes”, there is little chance for you to engage in more realistic training. Consider seeking out a facility that will give you a little more freedom in your training practices. Find an instructor who holds an impeccable reputation. Firearms instructors are becoming a dime a dozen. Be sure to read reviews before scheduling a class or training session. Invest in a good holster and a good belt. The last thing you want is a struggle to retrieve or draw your firearm. Develop good fundamentals within your training practices. And continue to train. No one has ever had enough training. No one. Lastly, with the onset of more active shootings in our communities, I would like to offer a few tips: • Head on a swivel. • Put the phone away. • See something, say something. • Trust your gut. • Develop and practice a safety plan. • Be prepared. • Lock and load.

TRANSITION FROM SUMMER TO FALL BASS FISHING

W
here I grew up, fishing is a lifestyle. I would fish Southern farm ponds and creeks day-in and day-out every summer, no matter the weather conditions. As I began to get a little older and experienced, I realized that fishing for a big bass as summer comes to a close was a little different than fishing in the cooler temperatures of fall. There’s lots of variables that come into play when figuring out how to catch fish during this time of year. A lot of your success can depend on what type of water you’re fishing. Typically, fish tend to go to deeper depths of water in the summertime. Bass want to stay cool, and the deeper water offers less light penetration. During these months, bass will actually begin to school up on offshore ledges, and if you find one of these schools, you’ll likely have a successful day out on the water. Finding where the fish are located is only half the battle; knowing what baits to throw is also vital. For me, I have more success during the summer with slower presentations like Texas-rigs, football jigs, ned rigs and drop-shot rigs. Once things start to cool off, the fish do the total opposite when it comes to where they can be found. Instead of the fish schooling together, they tend to be spread out throughout a certain area, making the bite more random at times. A lot of the shad that also call these creeks and lakes home seek more shallow water, and the bass often follow them. In the part of the country where I’m from, I notice this transition during September and October when it starts to get a lot cooler out. The baits I throw in the fall also vary from those baits of the summertime. Buzzbaits, topwater walkin’ baits and others that can cover a lot of water are what I usually get bites with. Whether you’re just getting into bass fishing or are an experienced angler, knowing how the fish behave during certain times of year is essential for your success, and it’s not something everyone always thinks about. HYBRID STRIPERS STOCKED IN N.C.’S HYCO LAKE
T
he N.C. Wildlife Resources C om m i s s i on is offering anglers a unique opportunity to catch hybrid striped bass in Hyco Lake with an initial stocking of 37,500 fingerlings. This 3,750-acre lake south of the Virginia border in Person and Caswell counties was pegged by biologists as suitable for a hybrids, or Bodie bass, because of its warm year-round water temperatures, a wide forage base and ample depth for this deep, open-water species. The fish are expected to reach harvestable size within the next year or two. Bodie bass regulations on Hyco will be four fish a day with a 16-inch minimum length. Bodie bass are a cross between striped bass and white bass. They grow larger than white bass and withstand higher water temperatures than striped bass. “Adult Bodie bass are a schooling fish typically found in open water searching for shad or other prey fishes. In Hyco Lake, tilapia may provide an additional food source not found in other reservoirs in the state,” said District 5 Fisheries Biologist Kelsey Lincoln. “This possible predator-and-prey interaction could make for some fun fishing opportunities.” Bodie bass are captured using various angling techniques including trolling, artificial lures and live bait. While Bodie bass do not grow as large as striped bass do, they commonly reach 5 pounds. Next summer, Commission staff will stock additional Bodie bass fingerlings in the lake at a rate between five and 10 fish per acre. Biologists will monitor the population to determine the success of the fishery and to update management recommendations.

Chasing The Dream

O
ver the last decade, tournament bass fishing has undergone some major changes for young anglers. From high school club teams to officially sanctioned tournament trails, the pursuit has been recognized and is being treated more and more like a traditional high school sport. The best young anglers earn college scholarships for fishing. North Carolina’s Trent Lawson, aka The Fish Nemesis, is a young angler with a dream of bass fishing on the big stage. “I think like a fish,” he said, and it’s that thought process that has given Trent a shot at living his dream. His dad first introduced him to fishing when he was 7 years old. “I didn’t like fishing at all,” Trent recalled. Later, though, he went with friends and realized he had found his passion.
He started fishing every week at a nearby farm pond. Eventually, a family friend introduced him to Lake Norman, north of Charlotte, N.C. From there, Trent knew he wanted to become a professional bass fisherman. He has set the course to make it happen. The bass fishing industry is tough. For most, the dream of fishing professionally is just that, a dream. Trent’s determination and confidence in his ability has kept him forging ahead. Trent’s high school did not have a fishing team, so he joined Patrick County High School’s team less than an hour from his home, but across the state line in Virginia. They welcomed him. Already well into their season, the team had one more qualifying event left. Trent and his teammate qualified for the Bassmasters High School Championship in Virginia and placed sixth in the state championship series. Trent also competes outside of school in other tournament trails. He has amassed at least 20 wins and numerous top-10 finishes. He is sponsored by Fishing Complete, the parent company of some of the industry’s top baits and terminal tackle. He also has a YouTube channel called “The Fish Nemesis,” where you can watch and learn from his fishing techniques. Not only is Trent intelligent at fishing, he is an honor roll student. He understands the difficult road of becoming a pro and values a good education. He needed to find a college with a fishing team. Trent’s dad contacted the fishing coach at Tennessee’s Bethel University to seek advice on scholarships and the fishing team. Bethel University was the first school to recognize bass fishing as an organized sport. The coach asked for Trent’s resume, offered his cell phone number and advised Trent to keep him posted. Trent texted his fishing accomplishments every week. Trent’s perseverance, hard work and excellent grades have resulted in a bass fishing scholarship offer from Bethel University. Trent plans to major in business and marketing. If he doesn’t become a professional angler, he intends to use his knowledge to possibly work in marketing for a bait company or start his own business. Remember the name Trent Lawson. He is on the path to bring his dream to fruition.

Bringing The Dead (Bait) Back To life

n case you don’t already know and do this, here’s a trick that can save a day in the absence of live bait. If you’re going bottom fishing and pinfish, sardines, pogies or the others are hard to find with a cast net or sabiki, hedge your bets by keeping a couple dozen fresh or frozen baits about the diameter of a softball, or larger, in the cooler. Even in freshwater, when live gizzard shad or skipjacks are nowhere to be found, a box of frozen baits can still entice catfish, striped bass and others. Dropping a whole dead bait down will get bites, but if you take a minute to “butterfly” them, these once dead baitfish come back to life in the current. No grouper or big snapper can resist them when presented properly. Grunts pinkies and seabass will hammer at it, and eventually get the hook, but grouper or anything else with a large enough mouth will simply inhale it. I’ve seen times when the bite would shut down, even with live bait, and a fresh butterflied beeliner (vermillion snapper) would get bit instantly. The two fillets of any given baitfish attached to the head, without the backbone and dorsal fins are just a little too much to resist for the big meat-eaters. Granted, it’s also big shark candy, but as Popeye would say, “You pays your money, you takes your chances.” Butterflying a bait is very simple. Anyone can go out and catch a pile of grunts, pinkies and seabass with small cut bait, but it’s no coincidence that the people who specifically go fishing for grouper are the ones that come home with the “brown fish” in the box. Don’t hesitate to butterfly a snapper or anything else you thought was once too large for bait. On the bottom, the smaller fish will hammer away at the two larger fillets, and out of nowhere a big gag
or red grouper will finish it off. A 1 ½-pound beeliner, pinkie or Spanish mackerel is the perfect candidate for this job. When you feel the little ones banging on it, sit tight and don’t set the hook. Wait for the big bite; there will be no question when it gets eaten instead of pecked at. Big butterflied mullet, spots and croakers are extremely effective inshore and nearshore for red or black drum. In freshwater, a butterflied bream, perch, crappie or other panfish is perfect for big catfish. To butterfly a bait, start at the tail and fillet each side up to just behind the head and out the gut area. Then grab the tail and break the backbone out just behind the head.
