ISTIOPHORUS: THE MYSTERIOUS SAILFISH

he sailfish is one of the most commonly caught billfish. Due to its proclivity for shallower coastal waters and frequency of ascension to the surface, the odds of catching one of these beauties can be much greater than for other billfish. There is little scientific certainty about the mysterious behavior of sailfish. They exhibit a general migratory pattern throughout the year, but they often break their own rules and show up unexpectedly. Summer sailfish catches are generally more associated with the Gulf of Mexico, yet they do appear on the Atlantic coast this time of year, as well. Sailfishing in the Florida Keys is usually a late autumn and early spring

bite. It can be an absolute catching frenzy. However, in July, following the passage of tropical storm Elsa, sailfish were seen tailing at the surface, cruising the waves along a strong current line off of Marathon Key. It was a bizarre and welcomed phenomenon. The conditions that followed the storm created a concise current line, with greener nearshore waters touching the blue water, and a milky powder-blue highway running down the center. Sailfish were spotted swimming east to west at the top of the waves, and seemed to dive deeper to circle back. The locals are no strangers to this phenomenon that occurs in the Keys. Though the time of year may be unpredictable, anglers are always ready to make the most of it. This type of fishing requires polarized sunglasses and a tower boat. Slowly creeping through the powder blue highway, scan the waves for black torpedo shapes or blobs that resemble black garbage bags. Hunt for the opportunity to sight cast live baits. Without the visual vantage of a tower, trolling lures or bump trolling live bait may be more productive than trying to spot them from deck level. Sailfish truly are an incredible and unpredictable species. Very few have been successfully tagged, and few have held a tag long enough to transmit much information. Of those tagged for up to a year, their patterns were generally erratic. They seem to be extremely transient, foraging and spawning in many different coastal regions, predictably unpredictable, like majestic aquatic gypsies. Commonalities in their behavior are that they primarily stay within a water temperature of approximately 80 degrees; they mostly stay near the surface, rarely diving below 300 feet; and they exhibit extremely curious evening routines. All of the transmissions showed sailfish spending the evening within 30 feet of the surface, descending briefly before sunrise and sunset. They were also observed to be active nightly, seemingly unaffected by lunar phases. or Matt Metelsky, daddy-daughter time with his 17-year-old is a little more involved than a trip to the ice cream parlor. Matt’s daughter Lily is a rising high school senior. She loves nothing more than waking up at 2 a.m. to run 85 miles off Virginia Beach and troll the edge of the Continental Shelf with her dad. In late June, the duo fished the Virginia Beach Tuna Tournament, where Lily placed second in the Lady Angler division with a yellowfin that weighed 39.9 pounds. But that’s not her biggest tuna to-date. Her heaviest yellowfin weighed 44 pounds. She caught it last summer, and at 5-foot-4 and 115 pounds, it took her about 15 minutes to haul it in stand-up with a belt. “I don’t know. We do wood work on the side, so we load wood, and I guess that gives you some back strength,” Lily offered as explanation for feats of fishing strength. “We always stay active. With Dad, it’s work hard, play harder.” Lily’s strength and stamina are a given considering she qualified and is working as an oceanfront lifeguard at Virginia Beach this summer. Matt, however, has another explanation for his daughter’s skill, as well as her love for this hard-core style of fishing. Lily was 5 years old when Matt purchased his Contender 25 with twin 150s. At a tender age, Lily cut her teeth going toe-to-toe with hard-pulling spadefish in 50 feet of water, 20 miles offshore. “I’m thinking the technique she picked up with those spades when she was little just kind of morphed over into the tuna,” Matt said. “It really amazes

me she is able to battle those things stand-up.” Lily began joining Matt for long days offshore when she turned 13. She was 15 the summer of 2019 when she was first physically able to handle a yellowfin—a 26-pounder—by herself. But pumping and reeling aren’t Lily’s only deck duties. She helps rig and bait and steers the boat while her dad deploys an eight-rod spread on the Gulf Stream. Last Jan. 11, she manned the helm while Matt battled a 550-pound bluefin. When the handle on the 50w reel broke under the stress, it was Lily’s idea to improvise with a screwdriver and electrical tape to eventually land that fish. The peak yellowfin season is June and July out of Rudee Inlet. Matt and Lily make five or six trips a summer, often with friends. Normal days consist of two or three tuna, some bonita and mahi, and occasionally a white marlin. Two or three times a year, January and February bluefin trips are just for the two of them. There aren’t many people interested in waiting on one big bite in brutal mid-winter conditions, anyway. “She’s just tough as nails,” Matt said of his daughter. “I don’t know how else to describe it. She’s just tough.” Lily doesn’t seem to perceive any hardship. She considers herself lucky to be able to spend time with her dad on the water. “When we’re out there on the boat, it’s just so peaceful,” she said. “I pretty much sleep the whole time. Death, taxes and blazing hot August temperatures in North Carolina – you know they’re coming. Part of the strategy for this month is to minimize the toll the heat takes on you AND the fish. I’m starting early in the morning, as absolute early as I can, it may even be 5:30am to 5:45am. You’re dealing with a lot of boat traffic this month which also affects the fish. After so much boat traffic, they shut down, which they’re already on the lethargic side anyway thanks to the hot temperatures. Those are a couple of factors that make the early bite the main bite. You’re going to be looking for the coldest water in the lake. Surface temperatures are starting somewhere around the 79 to 80 degree mark in the mornings and by twelve o’clock you’ll see them climbing to about 85 degrees. Most of these fish are going to be down in the 20 to 25 foot or deeper depth range. The water down that deep isn’t going to change drastically as the day goes on, it stays somewhere in the mid to high 70’s for the most part. The bottom ends of these lakes, you could be looking at upwards of 88 degrees, so there is going to be a big, big difference in the bottom ends and top ends of these lakes. Your fish are definitely going to be in the coldest water they can find for this month. Your bait’s running bigger. It’s growing. Where I was using 4 to 5 inch baits most of the spring, your bait’s probably going to go to 5 inches up. I will start out in the morning with live bait on planer boards, if I can find the water. This water typically involves tailwater, the top ends of the lakes, so obviously it’s shallow. Most lakes are river sections at the top of them, so you’re in shallow waters so a lot of times you don’t have the choice to fish 25 to 30 feet down. Your total depth may be 18 feet. So, in water like that, in that situation, I’m going to pull some planer boards. Baits are going to be surface to 14 or 15 foot baits. If they don’t run the dams, you don’t have cold water. That water is going to be as hot as can be, and that’s when you’re going to have to go down the lake. That’s when I’m going to be fishing live baits on down lines, similar to last month, shad Carolina rigged on circle hooks. That’s probably going to be your bread and butter since the water schedule just isn’t consistent. I’m looking for holes. An area might be 30 foot and there might be a 10 foot drop off, and there’s going to be some cooler water in there so you can anticipate fish gathering there. Anywhere where you have creeks coming in, anywhere where you have any kind of flow, you’re typically going to have some kind of water temperature fluctuation. And it doesn’t take much! A two degree water temperature fluctuation could mean everything this time of year. They’re just like you and me – if we can be in 95 degree or 93 degree weather, we’re going to be in 93. I still like points this month. I still like deep water to shallow water access points. Name of the game doesn’t change; I’m looking for deep, cold water. They could scatter out. If I don’t find them in two or three spots that I know I’ve got the water that they should be in, fair to assume they’re scattered out. At which case, I’ll put out lead core lines and troll bucktails just for the simple fact that you cover so much more ground that way. I don’t fish a whole lot like that, but it’s an effective way to find fish. There’s a lot of underwater humps on the lower end of Lake Hickory and Rhodhiss. You can probably find fish on those humps in the mornings. I can’t stress enough how important water temperature is this month. These fish aren’t made for this kind of water, they’re just hanging on. They don’t want to do a whole lot. You’ve more or less got to hit them in the head with the bait. And if we get a cold front in August? You better get your butt out there!

Forecast for Lake Norman By: Captain Craig Price August’s arrival in central NC concurs with the dog days of summer. But local anglers might think of August’s sticky hot days as the “cat days of summer”, because plenty of blues, flatheads, and channel cats can be taken in numerous ways and locations. On Norman, big schools of white perch can be found in 1540 ft. of water in long coves off the river channel and towards the back of major creek channels. Jigging for the perch with single or tandem jigs, or sabiki rigs, is an almost sure-fire way to catch dozens if not hundreds of fish. But more importantly, the perch action is a means to a bigger and better end. The perch feeding activity/vibrations draws top predators so I Carolina rig live perch (4-8”) on down rods with 1-2 oz of weight and 4/0-5/0 circle hooks, and fish them from the bottom to midway up the water column. The deepest baits typically catch flatheads, channels, and blues; and the middepth baits catch big bass, hybrids, stripers, and cats too. The cats aren’t always big, but it’s not unusual to hook 10-25# flatheads or blue cats. If you want to target cats more conventionally, try Santee rigs starting in the backs of creeks and long coves in 8-10 ft. of water early and late in the day, working out to the creek mouths up to 35-40 ft. during midday, or in reverse if starting in the evening. Expect the bite to be slower in the heat and light of the day with better action at dawn and dusk, and more so during the night. Fresh bait is key, with bream and perch fillets being top producers, but prepared baits of various kinds also work. For bass, look for topwater action on main channel points and humps early and late, then fish main or creek channel

docks focusing on the deep shade during the day. Pig and jigs, plastic worms, or lizards in green pumpkin and electric blue are effective, and dipping the tails in chartreuse dye often helps. Try tandem bladed, 3/8-1/2 oz spinnerbaits in white or blue-white, too. Of course, live bait fished shallow early and late, then deeper midday around the points and humps above is hard to beat. Hybrids and Norman’s remaining stripers can be found anywhere the bass might be, and caught the same ways. But fishing for them at night around well-lit docks in 12+ ft. of water is a better option. Dark colored topwaters, spinnerbaits, stickbaits, or darter type jigs and swim baits all produce around the edges of the lit area. Bass, crappie and perch are usually present too. Big baits aren’t always the answer on Norman, so be sure to try small offerings if you’re not getting strikes from medium-large lures. A-rigs with small swimbaits are also worth a try. With water temps approaching 90F or above, also keep in mind that fish don’t have eyelids or sunglasses, so the bright sun is a problem for them. Pick your times and locations more carefully, adjust your tactics, and Fish On! Capt. Summertime fishing is one of the toughest times to catch fish. We are hot, they are hot, everyone is miserable in the heat. But two things prove true... 1. You can always find fish shallow. 2. You can always find fish deep. The trick is, finding them.

this. As the crankbait reaches the deeper part of the ledge, I simply lower my rod tip to keep it in the strike zone. I prefer a longer, softer rod for Crankbaits like a Powell Endurance 7116 crank bait rod. Ledges are ideal for creating a summertime fish catching Bonanza. Now go catch fish, (off a ledge).

An ideal way to do just that is to fish ledges. Find where the river channel swings near a shallow bank and you're golden. Use your electronics to find brush piles, rock, or schooling Bass. Mark these places well with waypoints or icons because Bass will come back here time after time. Watching your front locator, back off if the ledge at different depths dragging a Carolina Rig until you find where the fish are biting. Make sure you fish in and around any brush you have marked. Just like any scenario, Bass tend to seek cover within the structure on ledges. You have to pick apart ledges, just as you would a point or a flat. There is usually a "sweet spot" the Bass will relate with. If you can figure out what that is, be it "where" (how deep) a brush pile is placed, a rock pile, etc... try to duplicate that scenario on other ledges and it's almost certain the Bass will react the same way. Bass often relate to ledges in the summer heat, but add current and the bite will be enhanced. Current cools the water, stirs up Plankton, and positions baitfish. All perfect for hungry, lethargic Bass. When current is present, key in on the inside channel turns or bends. Fish can seek the calm side of the current here and hang close waiting for food to get pushed by. Typically, for a Carolina Rig I use a C3 Baits 8" Magnum worm. I stick to basic colors to start, like a Green Pumpkin or June bug and then tweak that later. Using a Powell Endurance 764 I can get good distance and not compromise sensitivity. Slow crawl the Carolina Rig from the shallower water and let in free fall at different depths. If this bite gets slow or doesn't produce, don't be afraid to throw a crankbait. I'll use a Norman DD22 or a Deep Little N and control the "run" of the crankbait with the height of my rod tip. My go to color in both is Lavender Shad. On the shallower side of a ledge, I want my bait bumping the bottom and ticking the structure so I move my rod tip at different levels to achieve 4 CHARLOTTE/PIEDMONT

Creating The Next Generation of Anglers

When experienced anglers discuss the pros and cons of fishing, we sometimes worry about waters being over-fished or good fishing spots becoming over crowded. Actually, data shows that for many years, the number of new anglers entering our ranks had dropped significantly. That trend reversed two years ago and the Covid outbreak suddenly caused a big increase in the number of licenses issued all around the country.

This trip represented three generations of my family. I have already begun working with my Grandson, Anthony Ciciarelli and his son Gio to introduce the fourth generation to this great sport. 18 month old Gio is shown here getting ready for his first fishing trip with his Dad and Pop Pop.

I have been concerned for some time that a generational gap was being created in the angler population so I started working with different groups to teach youngsters and their parents about the benefits of participation in this great outdoor sport. This year I decided to turn my attention to some people closer to me, my own family. My son, step sons and grandsons are all living that hectic life attending to their families and careers. They all fish occasionally but I thought it was important that I take them on a fishing trip that they would remember and hopefully hook them into making angling part of their normal life activities. I mentioned my plans to my friend Howie Anger from Nashville and he asked to join the groups for a striper fishing trip to the Tennessee River, along with his son Ted. The trip was arranged nearly a year in advance so that every attendee could make definite plans to avoid last minute changes.

CAMP FOR TROUT DEEP IN THE SMOKIES By Nick Carter

hen the boat dropped us off Friday morning, it was with an understanding someone would return for us Sunday afternoon. We debarked into two nights and three days of camping and trout fishing deep in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. With no cell service or road access for miles in any direction, we were about as disconnected as you can get in this part of the world. It was a glorious feeling. Actually, one of our guides, Jake Tallent, of Fish Tales Outfitters in Franklin, N.C., had a satellite phone/EPIRB “for emergencies.” Around the campfire one night, he admitted using it to text his girlfriend. Guess the whole out-of-touch and roughing-it fantasy is a little outdated these days. We weren’t really roughing it much at all. Tallent and our other guide, Nick Potts, rolled cartloads of gear up the trail to our campsite near the mouth of Hazel Creek. Three other clients and I sat in camp chairs and got to know each other while the guides set up camp. That set the mood for the weekend. The camping was comfortable, everything was provided for. All we were expected to do was fish hard, enjoy ourselves and return to hot meals around a campfire each evening. Hazel Creek flows through high mountains on the north shore of

North Carolina’s Lake Fontana. Road access to the north shore was completely cut off in the 1940s, when TVA flooded this impoundment of the Little Tennessee River. Abandoned, the communities that existed there returned to the forest. In three-quarters of a century since, it has become one of the most beautiful and historically intriguing areas of the Smokies. The best access is by boat across the lake. Proctor, N.C. is the ghost town on Hazel Creek. The town’s main drag, Calico Street, is now the gravel trail that parallels the creek for 15 miles up into the hills. Ruins of Proctor are hidden everywhere in the creek and up steep wooded hillsides. Tallent regaled us with history as we passed landmarks hiking upstream in search of good trout water each day. The creek itself is on the large side of typical for the park. It is cold and clear with a relatively flat gradient that makes for easy streamside hiking. A mix of boulder-strewn stretches and bedrock shoals create interesting holding water. There are also some deep, dark pools. Hazel Creek is loaded with beautiful 7- to 12-inch stream-born rainbow trout. There are also some big browns lurking in the deep holes. Over three days of fishing, we caught good numbers of fish with simple dry-dropper rigs on 3- and 4-weight fly rods. There’s nothing more fun than wading up a mountain stream to toy with wild trout that are eager to jump on a dry fly. Hazel Creek is a gorgeous place to do it.
