CAST 2021 marked a return to normalcy for the fishing industry. In the 64th exhibition of the world’s largest sportfishing trade show, the halls of the Orlando’s Orange County Convention Center bustled with activity July 21-23. As usual, the event kicked off with the ICAST Cup bass tournament at nearby Lake Toho, and the renowned big-bass factory did not disappoint. In a short four-hour tournament, the winning team weighed a tournament-record 25-pound, 7-ounce five-fish limit. But most of the action went on indoors. Live Bait Snook on South Florida Beaches

ere on Florida’s East Coast, we have access to some of the most exciting shore-based fishing there is. From spring, through summer and into fall, big snook run the beaches of South Florida, and they can be caught from the sand with lures and even sight fished with flies. I am a lure fisherman, and everyone knows it, but fishing with artificials can be difficult during the doldrums of late summer and fall. The Atlantic Ocean is flatter and big snook become wary. The fish are still here; what are we to do? Here’s a pretty simple technique that will catch snook when the fishing gets tough. The hottest bait this time of year is live croakers. Croakers are catching so many snook right now that the local bait shops here in the Stuart, Fla. area sell out as soon as they get a shipment. With the artificial bite kind of drying up, my friend and occasional fishing buddy, Mike Vars, showed me how to catch big snook on live bait. Mike buys a dozen croakers when he can get them. All you need to keep them alive for a couple days is a round bucket with an aerator. Good baitsized croakers are 5 to 8 inches, anything larger might catch a big snook, but they are harder to fish. Mike uses a 3 or 4 size circle hook and hooks his croakers through the nostrils so they can

swim freely. Some anglers prefer to hook them through the tail. Since the tactic involves free-lining, with no weight, casts should be just past the trough on a high tide, which is about 20 feet here. Then open the spool and let that croaker run. On low tide, it might be necessary to wade past the trough and cast farther out. Mike uses a 60-lb. leader and 20-lb. braid on a spinning reel. Before the snook takes the bait, the croaker will often wiggle excitedly—this is a signal you are about to get bit. When the line suddenly starts moving fast, it means a snook has your croaker. Let her have the bait for a few seconds, and then begin reeling steadily so the circle hook lodges in the corner of her mouth. Forecast for Lake Norman By: Captain Craig Price Ahh September – cooler, shorter days and the first northerly winds of the season. Though they’re relatively weak systems compared to a true NE blow, these fronts do bring cooler air and begin the fall cool down. But, not so fast my friend. Early to mid-September is often a hot extension of August. But add a few of the weak “nor’easters” to the shortening days, and local waters will begin to cool down. By the end of the month, the forage and predators should be in fairly predictable areas, and the fall bite begins. On Lake Norman, that means increasingly better topwater opportunities for hybrid stripers and spotted bass, with the occasional striper and ever-present white perch in the mix. At least the perch are usually larger than the early to mid-summer specimens. At dawn and dusk, look for surface feeding activity around major and secondary points and adjacent bays - near creek mouths from mid-lake to Terrapin Creek. Flats and humps along the river channel above the 150 bridge can be very active too. Large schools of bait will gather in these areas before they begin their annual push into the creeks, which typically coincides with the full moon in October. If you can find schools of shad or herring on your sonar in 15-30 ft. of water before sunup, you’re probably in an area where “it’s getting ready to happen”. Walking lures like Spooks, Spook Jr’s, or Top Dogs are favorites of mine, but many other baits work too. Buzzbaits, broken back Rapalas or Redfins, spinnerbaits, crankbaits, bucktails, swimbaits on light lead jigheads – the options are many. It’s smart to have at least a few different designs rigged and ready because the action can be brief, and sometimes even blitzing fish can be unexpectedly picky. I like to think in terms of baits that run only on the surface, just under the surface, or lures that are versatile enough to fish up, down, or in between. As a rule, fish shallow to deeper as the day brightens, and deeper to shallow as the sun sets. The middle and bottom of the water column

become especially important as the surface bite slows down. For colors, I like clear for my spooks with a feathered tail hook, but I also like combinations of red, white, and chartreuse. Shad and herring colors are good too. Keep in mind that bigger is not always better on Norman. If you’re not getting bites, go smaller and slower. These fish are often chasing juvenile baits and matching the hatch may be needed. If you’re so inclined and there aren’t too many boats in the way, pitching or trolling live baits into or near this activity is fun and effective. This technique often produces bigger fish than artificials do. Live baits also offer the ready option of being fished further down in the water column as needed. Finally, if hot weather and water temps in the upper 80’s persist into September, catfish (blues) plus spots and hybrids can be found along the river channel flood plain, or in the channel itself, from Marker 10 to Cowans Ford Dam. If herring are dying off and floating in a given area, use live herring, large threadfins, or gizzard shad fished 15-40 ft. deep in water depths from 30 ft. and out. Planer boards or Redi-rig floats get the baits out from under your boat and can be especially useful on bright days. Once the water cools, look for cats in the same areas where the aforementioned bait schools and surface action are found. Fresh cut bait and live baits slow trolled on Carolina or Santee rigs are effective. Hopefully I’ll see you in September, with a bent rod in your hand, yelling Fish On! Capt. Every year, thousands of buyers, retailers and media attend the largest sport fishing convention in Orlando called iCast. iCast, which stands for International Convention of Allied Sport fishing Trades, is put on by the American Sport Fishing Association. The convention is yearly, and while Covid had a big influence on the convention last year, the 2021 iCast Convention was very well attended and had many new fishing products that will hopefully help us catch more fish. Some of the biggest companies participated, and many new companies were at the show introducing their new tackle products for 2021-2022. Here are a few items that caught my eye during the show.

vibrating jig from Z-Man Fishing. The Big Blade’s blade is 70% larger than the Original Chatterbait blade. Pro angler Bryan Thrift designed this new chatterbait and it lives up to all the hype. The Big Blade has some of the most erratic action I’ve ever seen from a chatterbait, yet at the same time it has the most vibration I’ve ever seen too. The Big Blade chatterbait will come in three weight sizes, offers a hand tied skirt, two trailer keepers and is sure to aggravate those predator fish and their lateral line. The Big Blade is going to retail under $12 and have numerous different colors for us chatterbait fans.

Berkley Powerbait Finesse Swim Jigs

When one of the 20 best anglers on the planet, world record holder, lure designer and innovator launches a new lure? I think it is a lure you should look at and purchase. Patrick Sebile from A Band of Anglers released his Loader Minnow. The Loader Minnow was designed and built as a suspending twitch bait with superior action. This lure has a different bill. The bill is ultrathin and double anchored, which gives the Loader Minnow erratic action and the bill will not break. Having the bill this way allows the lure to have exceptional action in the water. Why? The thicker the bill the less action the bait has, and Patrick has tested and has tested the Loader Minnow for years with action in mind. Retail price will be under $13 dollars and they will come in two different length sizes.

Most anglers will not know about these jigs because when you look at them, well, it looks like another swim jig. When you look closely at them, then your eyes will open. These jigs took years of time to develop and create. Berkley has made the skirt with their Powerbait flavoring. This scientific scent makes fish hold on to it longer. How long? They say the average fish can eat it and spit out your bait in less than .29 seconds. Our reaction time when setting the hook is roughly the same amount of time. Fish will hold onto a Powerbait scented bait for 3X longer. Having that scent, a great looking swim bait with a great hooks, eyes and chip resistant paint schemes makes this a winner for me. Not to mention this swim bait should start below $5 dollars. 13 Fishing 13 Fishing is introducing a new line of affordable lures all priced at $6.99. These lures are the same shape of the originals, but they have slight changes in them that allows 13 Fishing to produce and sell the baits at a much better price. Some of the lures have slightly different paint schemes, rattles, eyes and finishes, but they still swim and hunt like the higher priced lures. The more expensive lures might have tungsten as the rattle, the lower priced ones have lead and/or more rattles inside these hard plastic lures. This gives us anglers on a budget at option at purchasing and using some great baits from 13 Fishing at an affordable price. Thank you, 13 Fishing.

Berkley Gilly - 2021 iCast Best of Show Winner The talk of iCast and afterwards in the Berkley Gilly. This soft plastic swim bait is amazing. The Gilly is Berkley’s take off the Imakatsu Javallon Gill, one of the most realistic swimming soft plastic baits ever created. Berkley is doing it even better. The Gilly will be released this fall and comes in several different sizes and most importantly, it will tell you how to rig it properly, and the price is around $11 dollars per pack. The finishes on the Berkley Gill are as realistic as it comes, and the swim action matches the paint. Pro angler Mike Iaconelli helped creates these swim baits and they live up to all the hype. This is one bait that all bluegill swim bait users are going to enjoy, catch some big ones with and love.

The long hot days will start to cool, the days begin to get shorter, hunting season begins and the fishing starts to get better and better. Don’t get me wrong, the temps are still warm but the water will definatly be cooling with the rain and the shorter day light. Best fishing will still be late evening as the sun sets, overnight and early morning before the heat sets in for the day. Find the schools of shad and the bass will not be far behind them. Bass will hold deeper during the day and move onto flats and shallower water to feed as the water cools. Blue cats will do much of the same. While live bait is my go to, any thing that mimics what the fish are feeding on should produce. Having said that if im fishing artificial im usually throwing something that mimics a shad. For catfish im using exlusivly live or cut bait. Ill either anchor up or drift depending on conditions and time for the day. The fresher the bait the better. Crappie and perch can be caught long lining pretty much any time of the day while I still prefer late eve, night or early morning to avoid boat traffic. When targeting crappie and perch I use very light tackle with a mix of live minnows and lures drifting slowly. I always take good care of my live bait and keep them as healthy as possible. I wont use a bait that has died. All to often I see people in the exact same spot doing the exact same thing. Move around, try something new, explore. The lake has so much to offer and most will never explore half of it. Give it a shot, you never now whats around the next bend!!!! Local Fishing Spots for Young Anglers

When you’re trying to give your young angler an introduction to the sport, the last thing you need is a complicated, difficult to maneuver body of water. A bad experience could lead to a real lack of interest moving forward. Pick a spot where banks are clear, very little overhanging vegetation to get hung up on and most importantly, fish (even if not of the trophy variety). State and local parks offer some very good alternatives for the soon to be champion anglers! iyeeeeee, yeeee, yeeee, yeee!” The shout sounded Cajun, or perhaps like the intro to a mariachi tune. Either way, it amplified the chaos on deck. Three rods were bent. Two anglers scrambled to uncross lines screaming off reels. A third angler dove to wrap an arm around the 10-year-old who held a death grip on rod number three. It was a tossup as to whether the kid would lose the rod or be yanked overboard into a very active chum slick. The whole scene unraveled when a 10-foot tiger shark rose to the surface. It smashed the boy’s cobia straight through the surface, blowing up close enough to drench us, maybe 15 feet off the stern. There was stunned silence, then... “Ayeeee, yeeee, yeeee, yeeee!” our captain hollered. “I love chaos!” Man, what a trip. It was a lot more than my two brothers and I expected upon reconnecting with a childhood friend in Bluffton, South Carolina. Our captain, Keene Reese, is a successful real estate agent with Ussery Group, Charter One Realty in the Lowcountry. He is also a very fishy dude. In mid-June, he invited us—along with my 10-year-old son— on a 20-mile ride offshore, where cobia were thick on a well-known wreck. With a beautiful chum slick snaking off the stern of Reese’s 25’ Regulator “Copacetic,” it didn’t take 10 minutes for “brownies” to start showing on the surface. There was no need for down-lines that day. All the action was on top, visible and simple. Pitch a live menhaden on a freeline, and a cobia would take it before you reached the rod holder. Over the course of a few hours, we boated well over a dozen cobia,

although the action came in such crazy spurts that no one could keep count. The thing is, we only landed four fish longer than the 36-inch minimum. That’s good news, according to Mel Bell, the director of Fisheries Management with South Carolina DNR. For decades, South Carolina was famous for its inshore cobia runs. May is the peak of a spawning run that once saw scads of cobia pushing into Port Royal Sound, Calibogue Sound, St. Helena Sound and the Broad River. Bell said boats lined up to target big eggbearing females before they could reproduce. The fishery collapsed. “We were in a bad place in 2016,” Bell said. “The numbers were scary. Even the anglers were telling us we had to do something.” While overall Atlantic cobia stocks are in good shape, according to the latest assessment, Bell said sound-spawners in South Carolina are a distinct “sub-population.” The Southern Cobia Management Zone was formed in 2016 to protect these inshore-spawning fish. The zone stretches from Jeremy Inlet on Edisto Island, S.C. south to the Georgia border. It extends three miles offshore, and within this zone there is a one fish per person, three per boat daily limit—except in May, when cobia harvest is closed. The limit in federal waters is one per person, six per boat. The minimum length is 36 inches, which brings us back to all the short fish. Bell said South Carolina DNR isn’t ready to release hard data. However, he’s heard fishermen reporting lots of smaller fish, which are likely the age classes protected since 2016. If anecdotes translate into survey data, it would mean the restrictions are working. Bell said next year might be time to take a close look and see just how well cobia are returning to the sounds. THREE WAYS TO TARGET

BIG CATS

f you like the feel of really big fish on the end of a line, catfish are a good option. There are several different types, but trophy hunters set their sights on blue and flathead catfish. Both species grow large and can weigh in excess of 100 pounds. For bait, catfish have been caught on just about everything you can think of. But generally, big flatheads are predators and like whole, live, hand-sized bream. Blues like large cut bait like bream, skipjack or carp. Once you’ve got your bait, here are some ideas for how to fish it. Fish a Fan: My favorite technique is to anchor up in a good spot near rocky bottom or structure such as a ledge, river channel or creek bed. I have 14 Driftmaster 255 H Pro Duo rod holders, which I use to put out a fan of baits on Penn Fathom reels and medium to heavy rods. These are spooled with 80-pound PowerPro braid. The terminal end is a weight slide on the main line then a swivel and a 3- to 5-foot leader, with a Gamakatsu 8/0 circle hook on the end. These are the rigs I use to fish Cabela’s King Kat tournaments. They are heavy duty because you never know when a 100-pound monster will show up. Back-Trolling: On big rivers, back-trolling can be very effective. Use your trolling motor in reverse to slow

the boat’s drift in the current and present baits to catfish holding on the bottom. Bottom bouncing is Bill Dance’s preferred method on the Mississippi River. It’s also very popular on the Tennessee River. It allows you to keep your bait about a foot off the bottom and bounce it to fish facing upstream. Tie a three-way swivel to a mainline of 40- to 80-lb. braid. On the bottom eye of the swivel, tie in 12 inches of 20-lb. mono drop line and attach a bank sinker. The drop line should be lighter than your main line so you can save the rest of the rig when your sinker gets caught. On the third eye, use a 2- to 3-foot piece of the same line as your main line and attach a 6/0 to 12/0 circle hook, depending on the size of your bait. Drift Fishing: Drift fishing is very popular on big lakes like Santee Cooper in South Carolina. On windy days, set all your rods on one side of the boat with weights that will slide along the bottom. Pencil, Lindy and slinky sinkers all work well for this. If the wind pushes the boat too fast, deploy driftsocks to slow the boat. If you don’t have driftsocks, 5-gallon buckets work in a pinch.
