oling his skiff through grass in shin-deep water, Capt. Josh Boyles was the first to spot a big redfish crashing bait about 100 yards away. The vast grass beds around Hilton Head, S.C. were inundated in an especially high tide, and we had been working them for a couple hours with limited success. Most of the limited success was blamed on a pair of trout anglers with little saltwater fly fishing experience. Boyles had already put us on a couple fish. We had botched both royally. Conditions seemed right, with plenty of water for reds to push into in search of crabs, but the fish weren’t showing themselves. And we needed to see fish in order to cast to them with one of Boyles’ Swamp Fox flies on an 8-weight fly rod. “I’m not going to lie. This is pretty slow,” Boyles said. “We should be seeing a half-dozen fish at once and trying to decide which one to go after.” With classic tailing redfish behavior, fish root around with their noses in the muck. On the other end, their tails wave above the surface like little beacons. Reds are not hard to find when they do what they’re supposed to. These fish were not cooperating. Instead of seeking tails, we were reduced to watching for unusual wakes and nervous water. Boyles hypothesized the fish might be eating baitfish or shrimp instead of crabs, which would account for their horizontal position in skinny water. As we poled slowly to where the fish was spotted in an open pool amid a sea of grass, I stripped line from the reel and onto the deck. There was no additional sign of the fish, but we had to check it out. The tide was beginning to turn out, and it would take all the fish with it. Boyles had earlier explained why tailing reds are great sport for fly rodders just getting into the saltwater game. Redfish are comfortable in the shallows, so they don’t spook easily. Also, they feed actively and opportunistically in the grass. If they see the fly, they will most likely eat it. When our redfish reappeared, it was right in front of the boat. So close that it made casting difficult. I saw it for a second, but Boyles could see it clear as day from the platform. He began barking instructions. “Two o’clock, about 15 feet out,” he said. “See the wake?” The fish was moving right to left across the bow. I made a timid first cast, which caught the wind and plopped down off target. “Pick it up! Do it again,” Boyles said, urgency entering his voice. “Play the wind. Put it in front of him.” The pressure was on, and the second cast was better. “Strip it… Strip it… Now stop!” Boyles instructed as he watched the action unfold. “Give it a little twitch.” He didn’t have to tell me to set the hook.

The only rules here are made by Mother Nature, and the only requirement is an unspoken bond with the ocean and a respect for its resources. Unlike our mostly predictable lives, every dive is like a box of chocolates; you never know what you’re gonna get. I’ve experienced a school of mantas flying by, a gentle whaleshark ambling along, a sunfish scratching itself on our anchor line. I’ve experienced the exhilaration of being accepted by a pod of wild dolphins. I’ve been bumped by a hammerhead and stared down by a menacing mako. I’ve endured jellyfish stings, sealice rashes, and a crab in my ear canal. The most thrilling sight of all—after paying your dues—is spotting your prey in the shadows.

have a friend at work who is horrified by my spearfishing. He asks, “Why don’t you just buy fish at the market? Aren’t you scared of sharks? What’s it like?” I know spearfishing will never be his cup of tea, but I try to explain why it’s mine. The simple answer is it’s fun to jump into tropical water and choose a delicious fish for dinner. But the truth is those flat, warm, fishy days are few and far between. The truth is that weathermen are liars, visibility can turn ugly, and fish are unpredictable. The truth is that underwater hunting is hard work in an alien environment. One of many challenges is to become comfortable underwater—so comfortable that fish believe you belong there. Fish sense herkyjerky motions and aggression, which means you will never be able to stalk them unless you learn to control your movements, and more importantly, your emotions. You must also overcome the primal fear of becoming the hunted, which is ingrained in all of us. And, as a freediver, you must become adept enough to achieve decent breath hold times. Only after persevering, learning to be smooth

When hunting tunas, the sight of the yellow finlets speeding under you will make your heart thump. When hunting wahoos, the silver ghost appearing out of nowhere will take your breath away. The realization that your eye has caught the silhouette of a black grouper in the reef will send you into adrenalized stealth mode. Back at the dock, as you fillet your fish and watch the sun set, you feel a sense of accomplishment and relief to be back on solid ground. But you also feel a sense of longing to be back in the weightless, quiet, unpredictable, beautiful ocean. As cell phones begin to ring, traffic on the way home raises your blood pressure, and thoughts of work invade your brain, you begin to plan your next trip back to the soul-cleansing world beneath the sea. In 1859, Nevada’s Comstock Lode was discovered, and soon its rich silver ore made its way across the nation, including to the fabled New Orleans Mint, the only U.S. Mint branch to have served under the U.S. government, the State of Louisiana and the Confederacy. Deep Summer’s Shallow-Water Option By CAM Staff

ere’s some advice for bass anglers sick of the summertime grind. Instead of dredging out deep ledges or dragging worms on offshore humps, go shallow and beat the banks. Yes. You read that right. In deep summer, bass that aren’t stacked up deep will scatter to seek out the best water conditions and feeding opportunities they can find. And while you probably shouldn’t throw all your tournamentday hopes into this pattern, which really is hit-or-miss, hitting it right can lead to some of the biggest largemouths of the summer. Wave action is a key to this pattern. On lakes with heavy boat traffic and on windy days, waves slamming into the banks oxygenate water. While water conditions across the rest of the lake are hot and stagnant this time of year, the shallows offer higher oxygen levels that attract baitfish and bass. By the same token, the backs of creeks with some current often offer better oxygen levels as well as cooler water. Vegetation oxygenates water, also, and provides shade from the stifling sun. Bait is another reason big fish will be up shallow. All of the bream species—the bluegills, shellcrackers, redbreasts and others—spawn during the full moons of summer. When they bed up in colonies, they do it in the shallows, often in just a couple feet of water. Bream beds are buffets for big largemouths, which hang just off the beds waiting on any strays small enough to fit in their mouths. Now, beating the banks all day looking for one big fish in the scorching August heat doesn’t sound like much fun. But that one kicker fish you need to bolster a tournament limit is not likely to be hanging out with all those 2-pounders suspended on a deep ledge. These are also great tactics for fun fishing, when you’ve got the luxury to only fish the comfortable morning and evening hours. In low light, a buzzbait burned around a bream bed or in the shadows of a blowdown can be just the thing to draw a reaction strike from a big girl lazing in the shallows. Running a spinnerbait, bladed jig or square-bill crankbait around and under shallow docks can be very productive. Resist the urge to slow down and pick apart cover with a jig or worm. Shallow fish will be scattered this time of year, so it makes sense to cover a lot of water. Hit all the stumps, grass, rocks and any other cover you encounter. Keep moving, but do it slowly and quietly. Keep your distance, and make long casts. Sound travels far and fish spook easily in the shallows.

Forecast for Lake Hickory & Rhodhiss

Death, taxes and blazing hot August temperatures in North Carolina – you know they’re coming. Part of the strategy for this month is to minimize the toll the heat takes on you AND the fish. I’m starting early in the morning, as absolute early as I can, it may even be 5:30am to 5:45am. You’re dealing with a lot of boat traffic this month which also affects the fish. After so much boat traffic, they shut down, which they’re already on the lethargic side anyway thanks to the hot temperatures. Those are a couple of factors that make the early bite the main bite. You’re going to be looking for the coldest water in the lake. Surface temperatures are starting somewhere around the 79 to 80 degree mark in the mornings and by twelve o’clock you’ll see them climbing to about 85 degrees. Most of these fish are going to be down in the 20 to 25 foot or deeper depth range. The water down that deep isn’t going to change drastically as the day goes on, it stays somewhere in the mid to high 70’s for the most part. The bottom ends of these lakes, you could be looking at upwards of 88 degrees, so there is going to be a big, big difference in the bottom ends and top ends of these lakes. Your fish are definitely going to be in the coldest water they can find for this month. Your bait’s running bigger. It’s growing. Where I was using 4 to 5 inch baits most of the spring, your bait’s probably going to go to 5 inches up. I will start out in the morning with live bait on planer boards, if I can find the water. This water typically involves tailwater, the top ends of the lakes, so obviously it’s shallow. Most lakes are river sections at the top of them, so you’re in shallow waters so a lot of times you don’t have the choice to fish 25 to 30 feet down. Your total depth may be 18 feet. So, in water like that, in that situation, I’m going to pull some planer boards. Baits are going to be surface to 14 or 15 foot baits.

If they don’t run the dams, you don’t have cold water. That water is going to be as hot as can be, and that’s when you’re going to have to go down the lake. That’s when I’m going to be fishing live baits on down lines, similar to last month, shad Carolina rigged on circle hooks. That’s probably going to be your bread and butter since the water schedule just isn’t consistent. I’m looking for holes. An area might be 30 foot and there might be a 10 foot drop off, and there’s going to be some cooler water in there so you can anticipate fish gathering there. Anywhere where you have creeks coming in, anywhere where you have any kind of flow, you’re typically going to have some kind of water temperature fluctuation. And it doesn’t take much! A two degree water temperature fluctuation could mean everything this time of year. They’re just like you and me – if we can be in 95 degree or 93 degree weather, we’re going to be in 93. I still like points this month. I still like deep water to shallow water access points. Name of the game doesn’t change; I’m looking for deep, cold water. They could scatter out. If I don’t find them in two or three spots that I know I’ve got the water that they should be in, fair to assume they’re scattered out. At which case, I’ll put out lead core lines and troll bucktails just for the simple fact that you cover so much more ground that way. I don’t fish a whole lot like that, but it’s an effective way to find fish. There’s a lot of underwater humps on the lower end of Lake Hickory and Rhodhiss. You can probably find fish on those humps in the mornings. I can’t stress enough how important water temperature is this month. These fish aren’t made for this kind of water, they’re just hanging on. They don’t want to do a whole lot. You’ve more or less got to hit them in the head with the bait. And if we get a cold front in August? You better get your butt out there!

Forecast for Lake Norman By: Captain Craig Price

August’s arrival in central NC concurs with the dog days of summer. But local anglers might think of August’s sticky hot days as the “cat days of summer”, because plenty of blues, flatheads, and channel cats can be taken in numerous ways and locations. On Norman, big schools of white perch can be found in 15-40 ft. of water in long coves off the river channel and towards the back of major creek channels. Jigging for the perch with single or tandem jigs, or sabiki rigs, is an almost sure-fire way to catch dozens if not hundreds of fish. But more importantly, the perch action is a means to a bigger and better end. The perch feeding activity/vibrations draws top predators so I Carolina rig live perch (4-8”) on down rods with 1-2 oz of weight and 4/0-5/0 circle hooks, and fish them from the bottom to midway up the water column. The deepest baits typically catch flatheads, channels, and blues; and the mid-depth baits catch big bass, hybrids, stripers, and cats too. The cats aren’t always big, but it’s not unusual to hook 10-25# flatheads or blue cats. If you want to target cats more conventionally, try Santee rigs starting in the backs of creeks and long coves in 8-10 ft. of water early and late in the day, working out to the creek mouths up to 35-40 ft. during midday, or in reverse if starting in the evening. Expect the bite to be slower in the heat and light of the day with better action at dawn and dusk, and more so during the night. Fresh bait is key, with bream and perch fillets being top producers, but prepared baits of various kinds also work. For bass, look for topwater action on main channel points and humps early and late, then fish main or creek channel docks focusing on the deep shade during the day. Pig and jigs, plastic worms, or lizards in green pumpkin and electric blue are effective, and dipping the tails in chartreuse dye often helps. Try tandem bladed, 3/8-1/2 oz spinnerbaits in white or blue-white, too. Of course, live bait fished shallow early and late, then deeper midday around the points and humps above is hard to beat. Hybrids and Norman’s remaining stripers can be found anywhere the bass might be, and caught the same ways. But fishing for them at night around well-lit docks in 12+ ft. of water is a better option. Dark colored topwaters, spinnerbaits, stickbaits, or darter type jigs and swim baits all produce around the edges of the lit area. Bass, crappie and perch are usually present too. Big baits aren’t always the answer on Norman, so be sure to try small offerings if you’re not getting strikes from medium-large lures. A-rigs with small swimbaits are also worth a try. With water temps approaching 90F or above, also keep in mind that fish don’t have eyelids or sunglasses, so the bright sun is a problem for them. Pick your times and locations more carefully, adjust your tactics, and Fish On!

The heat has finally taken its toll. The heat usually slows the fish as well as the summer time boat traffic and it is officially here. Don’t get discouraged though, you just got to think outside of the box. Night or early morning are going to be your two best key times to get out. That doesn’t mean other times can’t work, you're just not doing yourself any favors. Currently the fish are deep trying to stay cool and oxygenated. The hotter the time the deeper I would target regardless of species. As the evening temperature cools off, overnight and early morning before the heat sets in the bass and catfish will move into the shallows to feed. This time of the year I focus on 2 main things. 1 is focusing on the river bottom, looking for structure and the fish holding deep. The second thing I look for is transition areas, specifically flats with quick access to deep water. I will usually place myself right on the ledge and fish all depths on that ledge. Structure such as docks with deep water below are a great place to look for fish. Use electronics to find these areas and you’ll see the fish with that depth change. If you’re fishing from the bank your options are slightly more limited but the opportunities are still there. Pick up a depth chart at your local sports store and you will see these flats, points and accesses to deep water. You might just have to get off the beaten path. McDowell Park offers really good fishing and many times even with a boat I find myself there. Pick up a depth chart at your local sports store and you’ll see the transitions, humps and deeper water in areas all around these areas that you normally wouldn’t be able to see without electronics. Put in the time, experiment and try different things and you’ll surely find the fish. Get out, have fun and enjoy our natural resources. Strive to leave it better than you found it as one day it might not be here!

Birthday Fishing Trip and Personal Bests for N.C. Anglers in Tennessee By: Jake Bussolini The Tennessee River System has long been one of my favorite fishing spots in the world. I venture to Canada each year for good natural lakes and river fishing, but the four-hour drive to eastern Tennessee proves time and again to provide me thrills and experiences that I will remember forever. This year was no exception at the Fort Louden Dam in Lenoir City Tennessee. I took my Grandson Anthony to log his personal bests in three categories of fish and had the pleasure of watching Joseph Wilson, and his wife and children, from Kittrell, NC enjoy a family fishing outing that they will not forget. They were celebrating Joe’s birthday, but Joe told me that catching big fish was nice, but his best birthday gift was being able to share a great fishing experience with his wife and family. Joseph’s wife Kristen was skeptical about this fast-water fishing until the group started catching stripers like those shown here. These were certainly personal bests for Kristen, Rylan, age 11 and Paxton, age 7. For Joseph however he had logged his personal best on the same waters at another date. I had set my expectations high for my grandson Anthony, and I’m sure he had doubts about his ability to make good on my promises but indeed he did with this 42-pound striper.

Anthony also recorder his personal best black drum, smallmouth bass and hybrid striper, all on the same day. Of course, none of this would have happened if it were not for Bo Rice who, in my opinion, is the premier guide on the Tennessee River system. Bo not only provides fishing expertise but also provides a fishing lodge for resting and comparing notes with other anglers. There is no other experience like the fast water, backwater fishing at any of the several dams in the Lenoir City area. It is my annual destination and I recommend it for every angler than wants a memorable fishing experience.

Our world has changed. I used to have the great outdoors mostly, all to myself. But there's a new virus in town, and it's caused all kinds of "insiders" to become "outsiders". Though phrases like "social distancing" are now part of our everyday vocabulary, I've had to learn to share my wide open spaces. These "newcomers" don't know or understand "our" out of doors rules. We just have to be patient with one another and hope that this too shall pass. In the meantime, I'm practicing patience with humans and an attempt at loving mankind. I hope that most are quick learners and open to kind suggestions of just how things out here are done. So, for now, I am practicing social distance (S.D.) times 100.

This set up gives me the backbone and confidence of landing quality summer fish. Let's face it, our times right now are unpredictable. Mr. Bass often is, too. But we can predict that time on the water is good for one’s soul. So, get out there often, cleanse your soul... Welcome the newcomers, wash your hands, keep your distance, be kind to others and go catch fish.

Luckily, Bass haven't heard about the pandemic so they are carrying on "business as usual." Though it is August and it seems the fish are social distancing, they merely just need a little extra enticement. Typically, this is the time of year one has to learn patience, persistence, and to slow down. Until now, the Bass have been crazy busy, prespawning, spawning, and post spawning. Now, they are tired and need a cool break. They head for shade and protection in forms of brush piles, docks, and the deep side of a point. The reaction itself can be slow but the bite is fast and furious. Often times so fast you didn't even have time to react. So be at the ready, for the "bump" but more so, for the ever so subtle, twitch of your line. The most versatile bait for these situations is a jig. More specifically, a Higher Power 1/2oz jig with a Bizz Bait Killer Kraw trailer. Your best bet will be to stick with a natural colored jig skirt like green pumpkin with a green pumpkin candy trailer for a little flair. If you find yourself around North Carolina's infamous red clay banks, rest assured there are orange/red crawfish lurking around. A quick change in your Kutter Kraw traiker using the color Embers and Ash, and voila, you are matching the hatch. Be decisive in your casts. Bass are often hunkered down tight in brush, or shade and are not going to chase food very far. Slow and steady hops and twitches are key to getting Bass to react. Stay in contact with your bait. Keep a tight line as the jig is falling. Most times you'll not even feel a bite, you'll just notice the line dart or stop and move away. This is your clue to set the hook. Keep in mind, if you find schooling bass they will stay in this same area for a few weeks. You can use your same jig and swim it through 12 CHARLOTTE/PIEDMONT

Kayak Fishing Essentials So, what all goes into competing in a kayak fishing tournament? Obviously, the big purchase is a kayak, but you also need, safety gear, fishing gear, storage options, clothing options, maybe a fish finder, a paddle, transportation for the kayak, etc. etc. It is a big commitment and that can get expensive if you let it. Let us start with the kayak. You want to get off the bank but a $5000 price tag for a piece of plastic scares you, I get it. Your first decision comes in at “do I want to paddle, or pedal?”. If you are just fishing for fun, relaxing, small waters, paddles will suit you fine. No issues at all. Ascend is made by Bass Pro Shops and offers some affordable, entry-level paddle kayaks to just get you on the water. When shopping for kayaks, you need to understand what sit in, and sit on are, what the length does, and what the width does. A sit on is preferred in kayak fishing. Open deck, with scuppers to allow water to drain through the floor. Your length will provide tracking, the ability to go straight. You will want to be in a kayak in the 12-13 foot range for the most part. The width is the stability. The wider the kayak, the more stable it is, but usually will cost you some speed on the water. Looking at an affordable, entry level sit on, you can get an Ascend from BPS for about $800, give or take. These kayaks will do the job, they may leak around the hatches, the plastic is not as high quality as some other brands so do not go dragging it around, and the deck is soft and bouncy. Looking at other paddle kayak options, I would look hard at the Nucanoe options as well as the Native Watercraft options. You will pay more for these brands, but you will receive a high quality product. From Nucanoe, the Pursuit is a great option, and from Native it is hard to beat the Slayer XC. For these options, you will be closer to the $1500 range. If you are looking to compete on a high level, the data shows you will want to be in a pedal drive. Many brands of kayak offer pedal drives these days, but at the top of the list, Native Watercraft and Hobie Kayaks continue to be 1A and 1B for most anglers. When looking at these two brands, cost, and pedal motion are the two big factors. Native offers a bicycle motion, while Hobie offers a stair master motion. Some anglers prefer one to the other for their knees, or back. You can get into a Native Manta Ray Propel for $1999. This would be an entry level, smaller sized pedal driven kayak. Smaller, entry sized and bare bones, Hobie offers the Passport 12.0 for $1599. When looking into the true angler options from these two companies, the Native Slayer Max is $2599, and the Titan 12 is $2799. Hobie offers their Pro Angler kayak at a 12 and 14-foot option for $3800/$3900 and add the 360 option, which offers more control and you will pay $4600/$4800. I have been fishing in a Native kayak for 8 years. I chose Native because they are produced here in North Carolina and I believe in supporting local. When I decided to get into a pedal drive, Native offers instant reverse, and that was something that Hobie did not offer at the time. While Hobie still does not have instant reverse, it does offer 360 technology, which allows you to move the kayak sideways and backwards after turning a dial. It is a tough decision, and an expensive purchase and I highly suggest you demo. I have staff members locally that can help you get in the kayak you would like to try. Being hands free while fishing is a huge advantage no matter what brand you end up buying. So, you made your kayak purchase - let’s go fishing. Well, not so fast. Let us talk about safety and laws. If you have a man powered kayak, no need to register it. You will need to have a sound emitting device; a whistle works well, on board. A white light on board. Great option that is used by many anglers. A personal flotation device or PFD is also needed. More options. North and South Carolina only require the PFD to be on board for anyone over 16 years old, unless you are using an inflatable. If you are using an inflatable, it must be armed and worn at all times to be legal. The key here is to find the middle zone between being safe, legal, and comfortable. Some great standard class III vests are offered by Astral, NRS, and MTI. These will be higher end, offer upper back flotation for comfort, and usually pockets for some gear storage. I have been using an Astral PFD as my standard moving water PFD for many years. Inflatable options also exist and tend to be very light and more comfortable. Mustang, BPS, Hobie, and many other brands offer inflatable options. I have been using a Hobie one that I won and I do like it. You got your kayak; you got your light, whistle, and vest. You are ready to get the kayak wet now! If you are using a paddle kayak, or a pedal kayak, you will need a paddle on board. This is one purchase I would strongly suggest not buying cheap. If you are paddling, this is your motor! High-end paddles will be lighter, stronger, and more efficient, making your entire experience better. Bending Branches and Werner are two great paddle options. They offer paddles for all budget ranges and are quality products. I have used the Werner Camano for 7 years, which retails at $315, but I am now using a Bending Branches Angler Pro, which retails for $299. Both companies offer lower end options starting in the $100 range. If you just want a cheap option, any big box store will sell you a $30-$50 paddle. “Do I need a fish finder?” This is another question I am asked a lot. If you are just starting out, I would say get used to the kayak, fishing in it, landing fish, measuring fish etc. If you are already an angler, then yes, I say you will want a fish finder. Fish finder price ranges are huge. You can get a graph that will show you depth and water temperature for very cheap, or you can get a 360 degree live view for $3000. It really depends on what you want to spend. I think having Sonar, down scan and Side Scan are very important. In a kayak we cannot cover the entire lake, so having eyes in the water that you can cover, all around you, is very helpful. Down scan will read directly below the kayak, and side scan is a view from the top, looking left and right. Add traditional sonar, and you can pin point those fish. Having GPS, and maps is always a bonus and usually comes on the higher end models. Lowrance, Garmin and Humminbird are the three brands that seem to dominate the market. I have used Garmin and Humminbird, and I think Humminbird is my favorite. I am currently using the Helix 9 Mega+ Si version, which retails for $1500 and it is simply amazing. Very clear picture. The final piece of the puzzle. Gear. Rods, reels, line, hooks, lures. That is all personal preference and will only come over time and over usage. Keep in mind, if you are competing for thousands, and fishing a lot, you will not want your gear failing you. Buy the best you can afford is what I tell new anglers. Do some reading on what line, what power rod, what speed reel, and then budget around that. I do recommend a good, rubber, landing net for tournaments. You will also need a ruler. Ketch Products makes an aluminum measuring board. That is the only board approved for 2021 at the time of this article. You cannot compete without it. Wildlife Commission Urges People to Be BearWise® as Bear Sightings Increase Media Contact: Jodie Owen

Over the last few weeks, biologists with the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission have experienced an uptick in calls from people who are seeing bears in neighborhoods. This is the time of year when bears are on the move as they search for natural food sources and yearling bears are looking for a new home. In almost all instances, biologists advise callers to be BearWise® if they are seeing bear activity. Being BearWise® means living responsibly with bears by abiding by six BearWise® Basics, the first and most important of which is to never feed or approach a bear — either intentionally or unintentionally. Feeding bears trains them to look for food by approaching homes and people. Bears are particularly attracted to bird seed, hummingbird feeders, garbage and other human-associated foods, like pet food. Bears may defend themselves if a person gets too close, so do not risk your safety or theirs. “If you see a bear in your yard, your neighborhood, in the woods, wherever, don’t try to feed or approach the bear — we can’t stress this enough,” said Colleen Olfenbuttel, the agency’s black bear biologist. “Approaching or cornering a bear can unnerve it, perhaps causing it to act defensively.” If left alone, most bears that wander into a neighborhood will quickly retreat to their natural habitat, particularly if no food source is around. While bears are naturally quite wary of people, Olfenbuttel says it is important to be cautious and follow the remaining five BearWise® Basics to prevent potential conflicts and live responsibly with bears. • Secure food, garbage and recycling. Food and food odors can attract bears from over a mile away, so don’t reward them with easily available food or garbage. Store bags of trash inside cans in a garage, shed or other secure area; or use garbage cans or trash containers with a secure latching system or that are bear resistant. Place trash outside as late as possible on the morning of trash pick-up — not the night before. • Remove bird feeders when bears are active. Birdseed, other grains and hummingbird feeders have high calorie content making them very attractive to bears.

eports are coming in from this summer’s big-game tournaments of some huge blue marlin topping the leaderboards. The largest we’ve heard of so far— 964 pounds— was a big meal shy of achieving grander status. There were also a couple of big fish caught in the Gulf of Mexico, one of which is a potential Alabama state record. The near-grander was caught July 4 in the Cape Verde Islands off Africa’s North Atlantic coast by La Onda Mila, captained by Marty Bates. The fish won $464,000 and the 2020 Blue Marlin World Cup, which is open in waters worldwide for a single day. Another qualifying entry in the Blue Marlin World Cup was 667.2-pound blue, caught by Done Deal and Capt. Jason Buck from the central Gulf of Mexico. Weighed at Cypress Cove Marina in Venice, Louisiana, Done Deals’ big fish earned $339,200 for the optional Big Blue Challenge consolation prize. It was a big payday for Done Deal. Their 667.2-pounder was also entered in the July 4 Gulf Cup, in which boats may fish out of any Gulf of Mexico port. Done Deal earned an additional $128,000 for its catch as the Gulf Cup champion.

The next day, July 5, Ginger Myers sat in the chair of the Fleur-de-lis and battled a huge 851.9-pound blue to submission during the 2020 MONGO Offshore Challenge. Weighed at Orange Beach Marina, the fish is a pending Alabama state record and it also puts Myers in position to claim the largest blue marlin ever caught by a woman from the Gulf of Mexico. She’ll have to wait for the results of the MONGO, as the tournament runs through Oct. 15.

ew gear requirements required for anglers targeting snapper and grouper species went into effect July 15 for Atlantic waters from North Carolina through Florida. NOAA’s new regulations are designed to decrease mortality rates for released fish and require anglers to have a descending device on board and readily available while grouper or snapper fishing. The new rule also requires the use of non-offset, non-stainless steel hooks when fishing for snapper or grouper with hook-and-line gear and natural baits. More than 50 fish species fall under the umbrella of the snapper-grouper ‘complex,’ a diverse collection of offshore fish that are sought-after table fare and critical to a healthy ocean ecosystem. Some of the most commonly encountered snapper-grouper species are black seabass, vermilion snapper, triggerfish, red snapper, gag grouper and spadefish. Many snapper-grouper species live a long time, grow slowly, and reach maturity at a late age—all of which makes them vulnerable to overfishing and makes each adult fish valuable to the overall population. Because these fish are often pulled from deep waters, they’re at high risk of barotrauma, a potentially fatal condition that occurs when fish undergo rapid pressure changes. Barotrauma, often accompanied by bulging eyes and bloated stomachs, can be a death sentence for caught-and-released fish. Fortunately, barotrauma can be reversed through the use of a descending device, which helps anglers return fish to deep waters from which it was caught. Descending devices can range from sophisticated, commercially available instruments to a DIY weighted hook.

t’s not a coincidence...people who go “grouper fishing” come home with grouper in the box. People who go “bottom fishing” might catch a grouper, but they are more likely to fill the cooler with grunts, pinkies and sea bass. If you’re dropping cut squid and minnows on a high-low (chicken rig), you’ll have plenty of action, but you are not fishing for grouper. In order to specifically target grouper, you have to put baits on the bottom, and tackle that will accommodate that bait, in order to eliminate the trash bites. I love to eat grunts, pinkies and sea bass as much as the next guy, but I specifically target the grouper bite with the size and kind of bait I use. From an anchored boat, I typically start everyone out with whole squid and minnows to get the party going on the bottom. This creates a “chum slick” and gets the fish all excited. After half a dozen drops of sacrificial baits each, we change over to larger live and butterflied baits. Wherever you fish, the best bait to use is the bait that is there. That’s why I stay on the sabiki while everyone else is sending down squid. I’m fishing for grass grunts and beeliners (vermillion snapper) to be used live or butterflied. Don’t think for a minute that a 12inch beeliner is too big to use as bait. It’s not. A foot-long butterflied beeliner is the perfect bait for a big grouper.

The idea is to use baits that grunts and pinkies can’t fit in their mouths. If they do eat it, it will take them a long time and a lot of small bites. The angler must be patient with big baits like this. You’ll feel a lot of little “tap, tap, taps,” and then all of a sudden the little fish will stop biting. When the nibbling stops, it’s time to get ready. A lull often signifies the arrival of a bigger fish. It’s getting ready to happen! Live grass grunts on a Decoy Jig are probably my go-to big gag grouper bait, but a big butterflied beeliner is just as good. In the past, when we had abundant and inexpensive bait like frozen cigar minnows and sardines in 5-pound boxes, it was easy to take a few boxes of minnows and a couple boxes of squid for these sacrificial “chum” baits. Now, we have to be more creative. I keep a pinfish trap fishing a few days before a trip and butterfly a large bag of the biggest pinfish. You can also sabiki or cast net larger pinfish on any wreck or fish-cleaning station with a little chum. Cast net a few dozen big turbo pogies (menhaden) as a back-up if you can’t find big pinfish. Finding Trout On

SUMMERTIME TAILWATERS

f you’re looking for a way to beat the summer heat, fishing a tailwater trout stream is an obvious choice. With predictable flows controlled by hydroelectric dams, these are waters where temperature and oxygen content remain relatively stable year round. For trout and angler alike, tailrace fisheries are an oasis in the deep summer heat. While life in all but the highest-elevation free-flowing streams is suffering from heat-induced lethargy, tailwater trout remain active and healthy. Whether it’s the White River in Arkansas, Maryland’s Gunpowder Falls or Georgia’s Toccoa River, there are some constants when it comes to fishing tactics in deep summer. No two rivers fish the same, but trout prefer similar conditions wherever they live. • Fish High — When cold water from the bottom of a deep reservoir is pulled through generation turbines under various methods of oxygenation, flows released below the dam offer excellent conditions for trout. This only extends so

far downstream, though. Summer heat and the sun warm the water, which is also robbed of its oxygen content in the absence of aerating shoals. For anglers on most tailwaters, this means the first few miles below the dam will be the best place to fish. • Fish The Morning — In the depths of winter, sleeping in and fishing the warmest part of the day is often recommended. The opposite is true in summer. Anglers and trout will be more comfortable in the early morning before the sun has had a chance to heat the shallows. Fish are more likely to be up and feeding when the sun is not cooking their backs. Get on the water at daybreak for a few hours of action and then go eat brunch.

• Fish The Shoals — Shoal-broken water has more oxygen. Trout seek out water with higher oxygen content, and their metabolisms also churn when there’s more oxygen in the system. Especially in low-light conditions, work the runs and pockets in the shoals to find actively feeding fish. • Fish The Holes — Find a good deep hole beneath a turbulent shoal and use plenty of weight to dredge the bottom. Deeper water is colder water. When water temps begin to rise, trout go deep. You might find a pod of hungry trout hugging the bottom, or you might find that one fish big enough to have the whole lie to herself.
