LIMITING OUT ON GULF SNAPPER

ast month, a couple buddies and I booked a charter for the opening day of Florida’s Gulf red snapper season with Capt. Brian Smith, of Big Bend Charters out of Steinhatchee. Capt. B. has a 34-foot power catamaran with enough room on the deck to play a game of volleyball. If you’ve ever been red snapper fishing, you understand the process. The day starts with loading the boat with tackle ranging from 8-pound light tackle to 30-pound bottom fishing rigs. A complement of frozen baits, including Spanish sardines, squid and chum blocks fill one of the big coolers. We ran out to a spot south of the Steinhatchee River and broke out light tackle to catch live bait. It’s basically bream fishing gear, using tiny slivers of squid to catch pinfish and other finned critters. All would be used to create an offshore smorgasbord for snapper, grouper, king mackerel, cobia and more. With the livewell full, it was just over an hour’s run at 27 knots to reach our first drop in 65 feet of water. We were anchored over a ledge with about 3 feet of relief. That doesn’t seem like much, but in the vast expanse of flat bottom out there, a small change in the topography can create an entire ecosystem. Each of us took a corner of the big catamaran and dropped live baits down. Before the bait could reach the bottom, our offerings were usually inhaled by either a grouper or a snapper. These were not small fish. The snapper averaged about 28 inches, and the grouper

were well in excess of the 24-inch minimum length. We would catch a couple fish at a spot and then move to another. The idea is that once you get a couple fish on the line, the remaining fish tend to get a bit finicky, and the bite can slow down. When a fish came on board, we paused for a quick photo and shouted “atta-boy” from across the boat. In all, we limited out on red snapper and had five gag grouper as bonus fish for the day. From first-hand experience I can tell you there’s no shortage of bottomfishing adventure to be had in the Gulf of Mexico. The Florida Gulf snapper season remains open through July 25. Alabama’s season runs Fridays through Mondays until July 19. Louisiana will remain open Fridays through Su nd ay s , and on

holidays, until the state quota is met. Mississippi is open seven days a week with an undetermined closing date as fisheries managers closely monitor catches to avoid overrunning the quota. The Texas season ends Aug. 2 for charter boats and Aug. 3 for private vessels. As summer gets in full swing, give some thought to ways you can get outdoors, enjoy each other’s company at a distance and get rid of those social-distancing blues. Finding a productive pattern and making high-percentage presentations wins tournaments; it does not typically catch double-digit bass. Bass large enough for the record books are loners. Anglers who pursue them are looking for one big bite. Here’s a little insight on how successful trophy hunters fish:

LOCATION: With a few exceptions, large reservoirs are not the best trophy bass fisheries. It’d be a good wager that more giant bass are caught from jonboats than from high-performance bass boats. There is a south Georgia gentleman, who prefers to remain unnamed, who has caught countless 10-plus-pounders and several fish that weigh in the high teens. He’s made a practice of looking for out-of-the-way lakes and ponds. Upon getting landowner permission, it takes him a single trip to determine if he’s found the right mix of depth, water flow, vegetation and forage to produce monster bass. If the lake doesn’t have what he’s looking for, he moves on. If he sees what he likes, he fishes it hard, often at night and often concentrating on just one point or drop-off where the biggest fish in the lake is likely to be. FOUR DAYS

OF RED SNAPPER IN THE SOUTH ATLANTIC By CAM Staff

omething is better than nothing. That seems to be the consensus of anglers after NOAA’s early June announcement of a four-day recreational red snapper season in the South Atlantic. With open dates set for July 10-12 and July 17, recreational anglers and charter captains are hoping for good weather during what promises to become a mad scramble at boat ramps from the Florida Keys up the Atlantic coast through Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina. The well-known reefs and wrecks will be packed with anglers dropping baits and jockeying for position to catch their one fish per person, per day limit with no minimum size. For some, catching those limits won’t take long at all. Reports from captains in the fishery tell of areas where an over-abundance of red snapper is making it tough to target any other species. All the while, data used by federal fisheries managers indicates overfishing for the species is still occurring. Since 2017, the South Atlantic red snapper season has been curtailed each year. Since 2010, a cumulative total of just 37 days has been allowed in South Atlantic federal waters. In May of this year, the South Atlantic Fishery Management Council (SAFMC) was scrambling to make rule changes that would allow any 2020 season at all. Effective July 15, regulations require descending devices be on board and readily available on all vessels pursuing grouper or snapper in the South Atlantic. Non-offset, non-stainless steel hooks are mandatory north of 28 degrees north latitude, which is near Cape Canaveral. It’s a similar scenario to what played out with red snapper seasons in the Gulf of Mexico over the last decade. Bound by legislation, federal managers are forced to make decisions based on available data on snapper stocks. At the same time, anglers and groups pushing for angler access insist the data is badly flawed. According to the American Sportfishing Association, the trade organization that produces ICAST and lobbies on behalf of the industry, an updated and improved red snapper stock assessment is due in spring of 2021. In the meantime, recreational anglers must be happy with what they get, which is roughly 70 percent of the total allowed catch. Commercial anglers get the other 30 percent.

Forecast for Lake Hickory & Rhodhiss By: Colt Bass It’s hot, and then it’s cool, major rain, and then dry. Yes, you guessed it, summertime in the Carolinas. With the coming of summer, comes the change in fish patterns. During this transitional period there is one constant to be remembered; stripers will always look for the coolest water they can find. The later you go into the summer months the deeper you will find the fish. In early July stripers will begin to split up and roam, looking for bait and the cool pockets. Prime fishing times also begin to change. In June there is generally a four hour period in the morning and a 4 hour period late in the day when I catch most of my fish. Depending on temperatures there is also a mid-morning period when the fish can be pretty active. As you go through July those windows are reduced by about an hour each, down to 3 in the morning and 3 in the evening. By 10:00 in the morning I’m usually following the fish to deeper water.

underwater road bed, anything that has shallow water around it with access to deep water is a prime spot. Fish will be feeding in shallow water early but need access to deeper water by 10:00 to 11:00 in the morning. I’m pulling planer boards in the morning anywhere from a surface planer board, a freeline board with no weight, then I’m pulling anything down to about a 15’ to 20’ range and downlines from 20’ to 28’ to 30’. Stripers aren’t in the late summer depths yet and most fish are being caught in the 20’ to 25’ range. Remember the later in the summer and the hotter it gets the deeper they’ll go. Wildlife Commission Asks Lake Norman Anglers to Release Any Blue-Tagged Hybrid Striped Bass By: N.C. Wildlife Commission Media Contact: Ryan Kennemur The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission is asking anglers fishing on Lake Norman to release any bluetagged hybrid striped bass they catch. Tagged fish are easily identifiable with the blue tag in the dorsal area (the top of the fish near the spines) and a thin antenna protruding from the side of the body. They are part of a study of hybrid striped bass, also known as Bodie bass, that agency biologists recently began to track the fish’s movements throughout the reservoir, particularly in the late summer months when water temperatures are high and dissolved oxygen levels in certain areas of the reservoir are low. Anglers should release these fish immediately. Since 2016, the Commission has been studying harvest of hybrid striped bass at Lake Norman and fish in that study were implanted with an orange tag. Anglers collecting fish with orange tags are still advised to remove that tag and call the phone number on the tag.

Forecast for Lake Norman By: Captain Craig Price Numerous sources confirm the Romans named July after Julius Caesar who was born in the seventh month of the Gregorian calendar. Personally, I don’t think in terms of Hail, July! - but my disdain for the month is more about the summer heat and boat traffic than typical July fishing results. The best way to beat the heat and boat traffic, without fishing at night, is to start just before daylight and finish early. Luckily, our July days are some of the longest of the year and summer mornings are often quite consistent weather-wise. Though water temperatures are well on their way to 90⁰+F, the early morning bite can be really good. Many mornings, I look for a spotted bass topwater bite around the numerous main channel points from Marker 13 to Marker 3. The points in the mouths of Mountain Creek, Beaver Dam Creek, and Little Creek mid-lake, or Davidson and Reeds Creeks down south, can be active too.

Or suspend your own light in the river channel near Cowans Ford Dam, or in a major creek mouth, and wait for them to come to you. Every year is “the same but different” as far as location, but smallish presentations in shad or herring colors, bream colors, and crawfish colors are standbys. The options are many Spook Jr’s, Rapalas, Redfins, inline spinners, or conventional spinnerbaits, poppers, etc. As the day brightens, these fish move deeper( 20-35ft ), and can be caught on the same points and nearby humps using jigging spoons, light lead jigs with soft swimbaits, crankbaits, and various worms rigs (drop shot, Ned, Carolina or Texas) As an old (longtime, not age) live-bait striper fishermen I often probe these same points and humps with herring or shad, and bream too. I free line and down rod live baits in 15-50 ft. of water for hybrids, spots, cats, and perch, even the occasional crappie or LKN unicorn – a true striper. In July, schools of white perch are found in the creeks and larger coves in 20-40 ft of water, and can be taken with small live or cut bait, jigging spoons, small spinnerbaits, and sabiki rigs. Hefty flatheads and blue cats follow this action, so try rigging live perch on down rods for these fish, and don’t be surprised if a big bass, big hybrid, or striper takes the live perch. Larger brush piles in relatively deep water are also good locations to check after the day brightens. This structure will hold practically all of our gamefishes including hybrids, bass, catfish, perch, bream, and crappie. Night fishing is another alternative throughout the remainder of the summer. Due to increased night time boat traffic, be especially careful while navigating the lake. Debris in the water is also a concern, especially after a storm with heavy rain or high winds. SLOW DOWN and keep a friend on watch if possible. Live bait or lures fished around the periphery of lit docks can be effective. Forecast for Lake Wylie By: Phillip Rizzitello Holy boat traffic batman! I’m not sure where all this boat traffic came from this year, but it sure hasn’t helped the fishing. On a good note though, the fish are still around and can still be caught. Get out early or late. If you’re trying anywhere between the hours of 10am and 8pm, you’re not doing yourself any favors. Sunfish are being caught in numbers pretty much all day on pretty much anything you throw at them. Long lining for crappie or targeting deep docks during the day with jigs. Using minnows under a sunken light at night is a productive way to catch crappie as well. Catfish are being slightly picky this year. Cut bait on a circle hook is bait of choice for blues and channels. For flat heads, live blue gill. Bass can be found during cooler parts of the day in shallower water and move deeper as the temperatures start to climb. During the higher temps of the day target deep humps and structure. During cooler times you can find them pretty much anywhere. A way to beat the heat and have some fun is switch to top water or shallow diving baits and fish dock lights at night.

The Science Line: A New Species of Bait Fish Has Appeared By: Jake Bussolini These are indeed strange times. The recent virus spread has created an excuse for just about every problem that has creeped into our everyday lives, from shortages of toilet paper to non-availability of some common species of bait fish. That’s right, I said shortages of bait fish.

than one billion golden shiners a year and expects to reach these numbers as the Black Salty becomes more popular. They are supposedly easier to breed than shiners and should eventually sell at a cheaper price than shiners although I have not seen that reduction in price yet.

Three weeks ago, I started noticing that when purchasing my normal amounts of golden shiners, there was another species finding its way into the bait tanks in the stores. To me they looked like baby carp but were colored much different from normal carp. Within a few days from the initial purchase, I was no longer able to purchase golden shiners and my bait bucket was loaded only with this new species.

I have notified the Wildlife Commission of this new species because I am concerned that it might be another invasive species that is unnatural to our lakes. A unique feature of this species is that is can survive for some time in brackish and salty water in addition to its normal freshwater habitat. Since it has been used as bait in western and mid-western states for many years, perhaps there is no need for concern, but considering what the white perch invasion has done to our white bass populations, it’s worth more attention. As a precaution I am simply not returning any live bait fish into the waters that I fish.

None of my normal suppliers knew exactly what species they had received from their supplier, only that the virus had somehow caused a problem with the production and delivery of golden shiners and this was the new replacement bait fish. I used the new bait with a reasonable amount of success. Some of my suppliers permitted me to pick out my own fish so I took the smallest ones available. Some of the tanks had fish as large as 6 inches in length. The small fish performed well for nearly every species of predator fish that I was after, except possibly crappie. I have not yet caught a crappie on this new bait. I did notice that the fish was very active when hooked and placed into the water. I also noticed that this new bait survived longer on the hook than any other live bait that I had used, a good feature. Also important in two weeks of using this new bait I never lost one in my main bait tank, they survived well with only a small bubbler in the tank. I did some research and determined that this new bait fish is only new to this part of the country. They are called Black Salty. This species has been produced for several years by the Anderson Minnow Farm of Lanoke Arkansas. It is a biological altered goldfish and considered the hardiest fish on the planet. Social Distancing with Wild Trout By: Ryan Wilson

Take me to a place where facemasks aren’t required, and there’s not a drop of hand sanitizer in a square mile. Take me to a place where my phone won’t work, and the news can’t reach me, as if I would even want it to. Take me to a place where social distance is measured in miles instead of feet. Take me fishing for wild trout on a small, backcountry blue line stream. One of the unanticipated side effects of our current situation is that fishing pressure on many of the more popular NC trout fishing streams seems to be way up. People are finding themselves with unexpected free time and a driving need to get out of the house and experience a new hobby. While these new anglers have been a literal lifeline to a niche industry, whose foundation is small retail and tourism, combined with warmer weather and the opening of the Delayed Harvest, it has reduced the elbow room on many of our favorite streams. If the solitary and wild nature of the sport is part of the appeal for you, this might be the time to consider branching into one of the small wild trout streams that our state has to offer. Wild trout fishing is a little different and can be as challenging as it is rewarding. You’re going to have to move and cover a lot more water than you typically would. You’ll be casting around cover, losing flies, spooking fish and leaving the trail behind. You’ll need to balance carrying in all the essentials, with travelling light, because making a quick run back to the truck will not be an option. Importantly, you’ll need to factor in safety, as there’s a good chance there won’t be anyone happening by to help if you get hurt. This type of fishing is not for everyone. However, if it appeals to you, it can be one of the most rewarding experiences in all of fly fishing. By getting off the path, you’ll have the chance to catch big numbers of beautiful, energetic and essentially untouched trout. The wild fish not only present with a next level of beauty, their fight and spirit more than make up for the lack of size. They’ll readily take a dry fly or well drifted nymph, and they generally don’t seem to be that picky (assuming you can approach without spooking them first). You’ll also get to experience nature in a way that just not many people do. Many of the wild streams do have some type of trail nearby, but the really good ones won’t be heavily travelled. Be prepared for this trip. You will need to carry in everything, so I like a backpack integrated pack to carry water, food, first aid, etc. You don’t need a crazy selection of flies, but make sure you have some Parachute Adams, Stimulators, Elk Hair Caddis and a few other dries in sizes 12-16 to match what’s popping. Basic nymphs like Prince or Pheasant Tail will get the job done subsurface. I like a 7.5ft 3wt rod and 5X or 6X tippet. Doesn’t have to be fancy, but get something that you 12 CHARLOTTE/PIEDMONT

like casting. Above all, make a plan, watch the weather and let someone know how to find you if something goes wrong. There are more of these beautiful blue line trout streams in NC than anyone could possibly fish in a lifetime. The best way to find them is to just pick a spot on the map and go. The beauty of these places is that they allow for an escape that is hard to find elsewhere. Summer is also the perfect time to explore them. You won’t find the biggest fish of your life in these places, but if you haven’t been paying attention, that’s really not what it’s about.

One Strange Angler By: Scott T. Fletcher

Anglers and lake recreationists in the Piedmont of North and South Carolina have likely noticed a different angler diving around local fishing holes. The Osprey (aka fish hawk, river hawk, or sea hawkPandion haliaetus) is a large raptor characterized by a 5.5-foot wingspan. It is white in color on the underwing and belly with brown above barred tail, a black necklace and black patches on its wing-bend. It is unique among North American raptors in that its diet is almost entirely live fish. Its favorite prey are gizzard shad, common carp, channel catfish, and largemouth bass, in lengths of 6-13 inches and no more than twothirds a pound.

Its skills as an angler are admirable, catching a fish in one out of every four dives, with a dive success rate of more than 70 percent. Its average fishing time is 12 minutes. It dives feet first up to three feet deep. It has large, hooked talons that are superb for catching fish. Unique among raptors, it also possesses a reversible outer toe that allows it to grasp its prey with two front and two hind toes. The barbed pads on its sole helps it grasp slippery prey. You’ll typically see it fly by clutching a fish headfirst to minimize wind resistance. In the eastern United States, Osprey are third in size only to the bald eagle and turkey vulture (two other area raptors). Like most raptors, the female is larger than the male. Adults have yellow eyes, while juveniles have red-orange eyes. Osprey inhabit clear rivers, lakes, and reservoirs with good water quality, as well as coastal shallow water estuaries such as Albemarle Sound and the Chesapeake Bay. Having recovered since the ban of the

pesticide DDT, their global population is more than 500,000, with 50 percent within North America. In the early 1980’s there were no Ospreys in the Piedmont of the Carolinas. But the installation of artificial nest platforms, installed by the North Carolina Wildlife Federation through grants from Duke Energy’s Habitat Enhancement Program, have aided the species. North Carolina’s Lake Norman, for instance, has a population estimated at 240 birds and is growing two to three percent each year. Most Ospreys breed here and then migrate to Central and South America (to the Amazon Basin) for the winter. The migration covers more than a 5,400 miles round trip or more than 110,000 miles in its 20-year lifespan. The bird typically returns to the Carolina Piedmont in late Marchearly April and leaves by mid to late September. Mating for life, pairs return to the same nest site each year, where the female lays two to four eggs in a large stick-built nest. But along with sticks, osprey will collect debris such as rope, broken fishing rods, angle iron, old boots, and bones if they’re left behind. So please dispose of your waste and broken gear properly. Largemouth Bass Stocked into Northeast Cape Fear River to Restore Fishery By: N.C. Wildlife Commission • Media Contact: Jodie Owen

Fisheries biologists with the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission recently stocked 134,000 largemouth bass fingerlings into the Northeast Cape Fear River to help jumpstart the fishery, which was decimated by Hurricane Florence in 2018. They will monitor the fingerlings over time using genetics to determine their contribution to the population as it recovers. The stocking was part of a collaboration between the agency and members of the Wilmington-based Team Bassmasters Fishing Club, who approached Commission staff with an offer to help pay for the restoration effort, after electrofishing surveys conducted by agency biologists in 2019 determined that few juvenile or adult bass remained in the river. Members held fundraisers and provided the agency with $4,000 in proceeds, which fisheries biologists used as a three-to-one match with federal dollars to get the effort underway. Biologists collected adult broodfish this spring and transported them to Watha State Fish Hatchery in Pender County, where Watha staff used them to produce the fingerlings. When the fingerlings were approximately 1.5 inches long, biologists stocked them from boats into approximately 30 miles of river near Castle Hayne and Holly Shelter — areas that fishing club members had previously identified as ideal nursery habitat. “This project started shortly after Hurricane Florence with many local anglers and fishing clubs trying to help at some capacity,” said Aaron Dennis, a member of the Team Bassmasters Fishing Club. “We’re just happy to have been able to contribute in this way, promoting the rebound of our local fisheries.”

Fisheries staff are using parentage-based tagging, a technique that uses genetic markers to identify whether a fish was born at the hatchery to understand better the results of Wednesday’s stocking. Results will help guide management actions after future hurricanes. “The parentage-based tagging technique is pretty much identical to a paternity test, with basically 100% accuracy, no tag loss, and no tagginginduced mortality,” said Kyle Rachels, a fisheries biologist. “We know that fish we stock have the same genetic markers as the parent broodfish from the hatchery. “As we sample bass in the Northeast Cape Fear River over the next few years, we can analyze the genetic material of each fish we collect and compare it to the broodfish originally used to produce the fingerlings. The technique is nonlethal, all we need from the fish in the field is a small fin clip.” Due to the COVID-19 virus, the sales counter at the Wildlife Commission’s headquarters in Raleigh is closed. Wild Turkey Harvest Sets Record High for 2020 Season By: N.C. Wildlife Commission • Media Contact: Jodie Owen

North Carolina’s 5-week wild turkey season had its highest ever recorded harvest of 23,341 birds, according to recent results from the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission’s annual turkey harvest summary. The 2020 season far surpassed the previous record of 18,919 harvested birds set three years ago in 2017. Agency biologists said most of the increase in harvest is likely due to the COVID-19 pandemic statewide “stay at home” orders, under which people had more time to hunt, including youth hunters. Harvest during the week-long youth season increased by 110 percent over previous years. To put this harvest in perspective, biologists typically compare it to the average harvest of the previous three years. Additional statistics for this season are: • Harvest in the mountains increased by 14 percent • Harvest in the piedmont increased by 26 percent • Harvest in the coast increased by 37 percent • Harvest on public game lands decreased by 0.4 percent • Number of adult gobblers harvested increased by 18 percent • Number of jakes harvested increased by 87 percent • Jakes comprised 20% of the harvest this year, as compared to 12-15 percent in previous three years. The top five counties for the number of turkeys harvested were Duplin, 686 birds; Bladen, 571 birds; Columbus, 539 birds; Pender, 532 birds; and, Franklin, 516 birds. When considering the size of counties, the top counties for turkeys harvested per square mile were: Franklin, Rockingham, Duplin, Stokes and Caswell. “Our estimates of hunting pressure come from a mail-in survey, so we will not have exact figures for the 2020 season for quite some time,” said Chris Kreh, the agency’s wild turkey biologist. “However, many hunters were telling us that pressure was up

considerably this year, especially on game lands.” In each of the previous three hunting seasons, approximately 70,000 to 76,000 hunters pursued turkeys each spring, with an average of 14 to 15 days of hunting for each turkey killed. “It will be very interesting to see the mail survey estimates of hunting pressure for the 2020 season,” Kreh added. Kreh and other Commission staff fielded many questions about the impact of increased hunting pressure and harvest, with some hunters concerned that this may lead to population declines. There are, however, several reasons to be optimistic. “The timing of our hunting season offers considerable opportunity for breeding before males are harvested, so hens are still able to nest and raise poults as they always do,” Kreh said. “Additionally, our two-bird limit and 36-day season, which includes youth season, are fairly conservative, and have safeguarded the population against overharvest for many decades.” Kreh also pointed out that the Commission’s goal for turkey hunting emphasizes hunting quality, rather than simply maximizing harvest, which means that an increase in harvest, even a pretty substantial one, is still very likely to be sustainable. “Our turkey population is very robust, and in most areas, it can handle this additional harvest and hunting pressure quite well,” Kreh said. “Hunters may hear fewer gobblers than they are used to for the next year or two, but since hens and reproductive output are still largely protected, I don’t expect the overall population to decline” For additional turkey harvest information, including harvest numbers by county, game land, season and weapon type, read the summaries here under the Harvest Reports tab. n the mountains of rural southeastern West Virginia, Second Creek has gained a reputation for large, sometimes difficult brown trout. It is a hatchery-supported, spring-fed tributary to the Greenbrier River that runs the Monroe/Greenbrier county line near the Virginia border. Second Creek is a long way from anywhere, with the nearest major population center being Roanoke, Va. some two hours away. But if you happen to be in the area, perhaps to fish for smallmouth on the Greenbrier or New rivers, Second Creek is definitely a worthwhile side

trip. It features a mile and a half of water regulated year-round for catch-and-release, fly fishing only. That’s not a whole lot of water to fish, and it does receive pressure, yet the allure of large cagey browns—as well as a few rainbows—rising to dry flies is enough to warrant a trip to this out-of-the-way gem south of Ronceverte. “That stream is a bug factory, and it’s different day to day and pool to pool,” said Jacob Ott, of Otters Guide Service. “If you’re looking to throw dry flies, and if the water conditions are fishable, something will be rising.”

Whether it’s terrestrials like Japanese beetles in summer or tiny midges in winter, bugs bring fish to the surface year-round in clear, mostly shallow water. Black stoneflies, blue-winged olives, sulphurs, March browns and others will be present in spatterings at different times of year. But the black caddis hatch is a highlight. From roughly April into July, Ott said mid-morning brings them on like clockwork. “When it hits, it’s on. It’s a full-bore, blizzard caddis hatch,” he explained. “Once it starts, it will happen at pretty much the same time every day until it ends.” These are small black caddis. Ott throws a simple size 16 or 18 CDC caddis pattern. He’ll hedge his bet by dropping a soft hackle or a Fox’s Pupae—or both—beneath the dry fly. “You’ve got to be on your A game. It’s smaller, clear water that gets pressure from some good anglers,” Ott warned. “By the end of the season, we’re fishing 7x and 8x tippet and long 12foot leaders. It’s technical fishing that requires accurate casts, good drifts and stealthy wading.” For such a technical stream, it’s worth getting the help of a professional for first-timers who hope to catch a few fish. asting lures on the beach is one the best ways to catch fish. You can catch monster snook, tarpon, kingfish, giant jacks, mackerel, pompano, bluefish, croaker, blue runners and ladyfish. Here are some suggestions to learn how to catch more fish. Gear: I like a 300 series spinning reel with an 8-foot rod. I use 10-pound braid and prefer white for its visibility. I tie in a 30-pound fluorocarbon leader with a double uni knot. A standard reel size for big fish is a 400 or 500 series reel and 20-pound braid. For tarpon, you’ll need at least 50-pound braid and a 60-pound leader. Go at the right time: Early morning is the best time to fish the beach. Baitfish are close to the shore and schooling near the surface at daybreak. The next best time to fish is in the evening about an hour before dark. Consider the tide: As long as the water is moving and there’s bait around, you’ll catch fish. Dead high or dead low are the two worst times to fish. Low tide pushes fish away from the trough, which is the deep cut near the shoreline. The trough is a fish highway and feeding area. Find the bait: When bait is present, so are the fish and birds. If there are no birds in the area, I go to another beach. Sometimes bait will be a hundred yards away, and you can walk the beach to find it. Consider the weather: If it’s a calm day with light wind or the wind is at your back, you can throw a light 1/8-ounce jig or a light spoon. Heavy winds and surf mean you’ll need some weight to cast far enough to be effective. Cast and Retrieve: You need to be in contact with the lure as soon as it hits the water. Before the lure hits the water, close the bail and retrieve any slack. When the fish hits, you need a good hook set and constant pressure. I use a number of retrieves. My favorite is to keep the jig or spoon near the surface with a steady retrieve. Keep your rod tip high and jiggle the lure to give it action. Another good retrieve is letting the lure hit the bottom then jerking it up toward the surface. Waves: Usually fish are behind a wave being pulled in the direction of the wave. Sometimes, they are inside the bottom of a wave or below the wave in the trough. Do not cast directly into a breaking wave. Not only do you lose contact with the lure, fish have a hard time finding the lure in the surf. When the lure gets caught in a wave, reel faster. Do not lose contact with it. Except for snook, or if the bait is on the beach, most fish will be caught on secondary waves beyond the first breakers. When a wave is approaching the lure from behind and pulls the lure, be sure to reel slower or stop reeling until you feel the wave pushing the lure.

reat white sharks are fearsome predators, but what can you say about an animal that takes a white shark, breaks its pectoral girdle and then bites out its liver before discarding the rest of the carcass? According to Monga Bay News, that’s exactly what orcas were doing to great white and sevengill sharks in False Bay, South Africa before both shark species vacated the bay in 2019. Following the discovery of numerous washed-up shark carcasses with the same tell-tale injuries, many researchers are pointing to orcas as the reason white sharks are gone from an area once famed for cage-diving. Two orcas in particular, named Port and Starboard, arrived in the bay in 2015. Marine biologist Alison Kock was the first to describe this brutal and novel feeding technique. “Teeth marks clearly pointed to orcas as the predators,” wrote Monga Bay’s Heather Richardson. “Sharks’ livers are rich in fat and make up a third of their total weight, so it’s no surprise these incredibly intelligent predators target this nutritious organ.” Orca predation and long-line fishing that targets shark prey species are the two predominant theories being floated for the disappearance of white sharks from False Bay and the coast of Gansbaai. Scientists, however, are quick to point out that shark numbers have increased in other areas of the South African coast. Liver-eating killer whales in the neighborhood is a pretty good reason to move.

Clouser Fishing WITH THE MAN HIMSELF By Capt. Michael Mauri

ob Clouser is a legend in the fly fishing world. His Clouser Deep Minnow is one of the most versatile flies ever created, and his innovative fly designs have driven the evolution of the sport. I met Bob at the Somerset Fly Fishing Show over a decade ago. I remember how excited I was to meet the real Bob Clouser. From there, we saw each other every year at the shows, and I always enjoyed our chats. But we never got to fish together until recently, when Bob and his wife Jackie came to Stuart, Fla. to get in on our great Treasure Coast fishing. When Bob and Jackie arrived, the weather was nice and the fish were on fire, but it was a busy Sunday on the water. It was unusually busy for this time of year, but since 2020 is everything but normal, we had to make the best of it. I checked a few spots and found a good school of bait with some nice snook in it. It is still amazing to see 30 or 40 snook busting bait all at the same

time. Bob and Jackie were blown away, and you could tell they were excited! Since Bob was the oldest, he had the right-of-way to start, and it wasn’t hard to convince him to do so. I tied on a little white fly for him and his cast was dead on, naturally. Strip, strip and the first fish of the day was on. Seeing Bob’s excitement made my day. Within a few more casts, Bob pulled two more snook out of the same school before he turned the rod over to Jackie. It took her just a few casts to hook into a big snook, and the tug of war was on. She stood her ground until the leader broke. Sometimes you win. Sometimes you lose. This one really hurt. Jackie soldiered on, and it didn’t take long for her to hook up again. This one was smaller, but who cares! It was a great catch, anyway. Jackie caught a few more before we decided to run back to the dock. What a great day! I’m very excited the Clousers were impressed with our fishery in Stuart, and that they will be back regularly. I look forward to visits filled with new

stories. Bob has a deep history in fly fishing, and each tale always ends with his even deeper sense of humor. Having worked in the fly fishing industry for more than 22 years, I’ve met a lot of the legends. Bob is pretty much on top. tlantic striped bass are among the most heavily targeted recreational species in the United States. In 2017, nearly 18 million angler trips targeted or caught striped bass. Striped bass harvest, by weight, was the largest of all recreationally targeted species in the nation. In 2019, a new benchmark assessment found the stock to be overfished and experiencing overfishing. “Anglers place a relatively high value on catching trophy-sized stripers—fish that are about 34 inches or longer in total length,” said Andrew Carr-Harris, co-author of a January 2020 study with colleague Scott Steinback. “But trophysized stripers are almost exclusively part of the female spawning stock, and if too many are removed from the fishery the stock has trouble rebuilding.” High levels of removals were found to have contributed to a steady decline in the numbers of female spawners during the last decade. A mandated harvest reduction in 2015 from two fish to one fish, 28 inches or longer, did little to increase the female spawning stock. In 2017 the stock was at a 25-year low.

Researchers wanted to better understand what policies might work to rebuild the fishery while minimizing adverse impacts to anglers. Carr-Harris and Steinback evaluated the immediate economic and biological impacts of different recreational Atlantic striped bass fishing policies. Results were published in Frontiers in Marine Science. The first step was to understand angler behavior. Data from a survey of 469 recreational anglers who fish coastal waters from Maine through Virginia were integrated into a model that simulated the effects of policy changes in trip expectations, fishing mortality and female spawning stock biomass. This approach examined the economic and biological consequences of full or partial harvest restrictions on trophy-sized striped bass. To date, these restrictions have not been considered in policymaking.

Dozens of Possible Options Evaluated “We found that there are many economically efficient management policies available if the primary objective is to control fishing mortality, but few policies if the primary objective is to protect female spawning stock biomass,” Steinback said. “Of the 36 possible policies we evaluated, only one achieved the intended reduction in fishing mortality while at the same time mitigating removals of the mature females.” That policy was taking one-fish per trip in the harvest slot of 28 to 36 inches. Implementing that policy achieved a significant reduction in both total and female spawning stock removals. This policy produced only a slight reduction in angler welfare, due to the relatively low rate at which striped bass larger than 36 inches are encountered. “Our findings provide empirical evidence supporting the recent decision made by the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission to direct Atlantic coastal states to eliminate minimum size restrictions for striped bass in 2020 and instead impose a slot limit of 28 to 35 inches to reduce spawning stock mortality,” Carr-Harris said.

Summertime Flounder

argeting flounder is most likely not on your mind in July. This is typically a conversation for fall, when flat fish embark on their annual migration to open water to spawn. However, for those who love to bring a few of these tasty fish home from time to time, don’t count on the fall flounder run to stock your freezer. It’s worth knowing a new trick to satisfy your taste buds year-round. I primarily fish the Texas Gulf Coast, and while the exact timing of flounder movements will vary depending on where you fish, the patterns will be similar. Apply these tactics in your home waters, and I bet you’ll find a few flounder for the supper table. During spring, flounder slowly trickle back into the bays from their short stay in open water. This is more of a gradual entry than their exit, and it doesn’t draw the crowds of the fall migration. Although you can target spring fish with the same techniques as fall, the timing is more difficult to judge. I feel they spend some time running the beachfront as they find their way back into the passes, bays and finally into the marshes.

I have caught many more flounder on plastics, even when fishing side by side with others using shrimp. As a rule of thumb, I prefer white colored lures or something that imitates a mullet or shad. The areas I target are drain openings on an outgoing tide. These drains can be small; 1 to 2 feet of width is all it takes. The key is the size of the marsh behind it. As long as there is sufficient water to hold bait, it’s perfect. Flounder stage at the opening of large drains as well, but no drain is too small. The key to catching flounder is to keep the lure in constant contact with the bottom. Pointing the rod tip to the water, utilize a sweeping motion. Twitch the lure to kick up mud and sand, and then pause. Hold your horses when you feel that first tap from a flounder. Wait patiently for a second and usually a quick third tap before making a solid hookset! Unlike trout, flounder will hold onto a soft plastic. I feel they want to cripple their meal before they swallow it.

July through September is a great time to target flounder in the Texas back bays and marshes. Look for bait to determine the timing where you fish. These shallow estuaries will be teeming with juvenile shrimp, mullet, shad and a host of other flounder food sources. I like to use soft plastic swimbait/paddletail style lures. In my experience, flounder prefer fish over shrimp. That’s why I choose this style of lure.

n May 30, David Anderson set out alone at about 9 p.m. to fish from the bank at Tennessee’s Nickajack Lake. A few hours later, he really could’ve used some help when a 103-pound blue cat picked up his nightcrawler and began peeling line off the reel. With a medium-action rod and 12-pound monofilament, Anderson was in for the fight of a lifetime. It took about an hour for Anderson to get the fish shallow enough to wade in and net it. “I saw it roll, and I saw the tail fan,” reported Anderson to TWRA. “I was in disbelief. I put the net under the fish, and it dropped its head and bent the net. “It was like I was walking a dog, and then it would walk me!” As he retreated to shallower water, Anderson tried to scoop the fish with the bent net, which completely broke. “I was not going to let this fish get away after the fight, and I gathered both net and fish and took them to the bank,” said Anderson. Weighed on certified scales, the huge catfish came up a few pounds shy of the 112-pound state record, which was caught by Robert E. Lewis on the Cumberland River in 1998. Fisheries Biologist Mike Jolley said the fish was at least 25 years old.

fishing guide enjoying the rare opportunity to actually fish caught a new Oklahoma record paddlefish on May 23. The 143-pound behemoth is just a pound shy of the rod-and-reel world record. Jeremiah Mefford, who operates Reel Good Time Guide Service, was fishing with his family on Keystone Lake when he snagged the huge paddlefish. Weighed on certified scales, it broke the existing state record by 10.5 pounds. Mefford’s is a huge fish by any measure, but paddlefish get even larger. Back in February, an estimated 157-pounder was also caught from Keystone. That fish would have shattered the 144-pound world record caught in Kansas in 2004, but regulations called for the immediate release of the potential world record. The new state record was also released back into Keystone after being weighed on certified scales by an Oklahoma fisheries biologist. That means there are at least two future world records swimming in this Arkansas River impoundment outside of Tulsa. Mefford’s catch was 76 inches long with a girth of 44.5 inches. The previous state record weighed 132 pounds, 8 ounces. It was snagged about two years ago by Larry Dale Morphew out of the Arkansas River. Paddlefish are primitive fish with a fossil record that shows them sharing the world with dinosaurs some 75 million years ago. American paddlefish roam the Mississippi Basin and feed on zooplankton, so snagging them is the most effective method to catch them on rod and reel.
