ottom fish anglers in the Atlantic from the coast of North Carolina south through the Florida Keys could soon be required to have Photo by Adrian Gray descending devices onboard and available for release of unwanted fish while fishing for snapper and grouper species. The South Atlantic Fishery Management Council approved the measure at its September meeting. If approved by NOAA Fisheries, the requirement will likely go into effect in late 2020. Additionally, the use of non-offset, non-stainless-steel circle hooks could be required. The new requirements are part of a package of “best practices” the council has been considering for the snapper and grouper fishery. It addresses the results of federal research that shows mortality rates of almost 30 and 40 percent for red snapper released by the recreational and commercial sectors, respectively. “The bottom line is that many important fish stocks are showing dead discard estimates that exceed catch (red snapper, black sea bass, gag and black grouper),” read a council meeting summary. “That means the data show that more fish are being released and dying than are able to be kept by fishermen.” The descending-device requirement is intended to increase chances of survival for released fish by decreasing the effects of barotrauma. Charleston’s December Fishing Forecast

D
ecember means holidays, good food and family time. One way to enjoy family time and get away from the busy shopping centers is to go fishing. With all the hustle and bustle the end of the year brings, many forget how great the fishing can be. The vast varieties of fish that are here in the summer have gone, but the redfish and trout bite can be excellent. The first thing you notice when fishing in December is how peaceful it is on the water. You won’t find any jet skis or many pleasure riders. The majority of the boats are put up for the winter. Mostly what you will find are friendly fellow fisherman. Fishing in December means you should concentrate on three things: redfish, sea trout and Sheepshead. The inshore waters of Charleston will be loaded with large schools of these species. The cold weather will have the fish in large schools looking for protection from dolphins and working together to find food. That means you might have to move around to find the large schools or wait a while in your favorite spot until a school comes to you. Either way, you will be in for some fast action when you find them. Most of the bait will be gone and the fish are hungry for almost any artificial lure or fly you place in their path. Look for redfish to be in very shallow water trying to find food and stay warm. Pole or troll down a shallow flat looking for the disturbance or gold flashes. It is not uncommon to see more than 100 fish in a school this time of the year. The water will be very clear and easy to see on a sunny day. You must be quiet and have polarized glasses to help you see in the water. The trout will move from place to place depending on the water temperature. After a cold front you might find them in a 10-20 foot hole. However, a warm afternoon will have them in 2 feet of water along the grass. Midday high tides or late afternoon incoming tides can be the best for trout. Remember to slow down your retrieve of all lures this time of the year. The fish will be moving and reacting more slowly in the colder water. A great way to spend the day on the water is to book one of the area’s great guides. Mt. Pleasant Pier December Fishing Forecast
D
ecember and on thru the winter, the fishing in Charleston is all about the water temperature. As long as the water temp stays above the magic 60 degree mark, fishing will remain productive. The trout and redfish bite will remain solid around the pier, but the fish will become more sluggish as the water cools. Live bait will work best for these fish, Seung Ho and Emanuel but artificial jigs will produce if fished with a slower retrieve. Mud minnows will be an easily accessible Kiprakis with some December sheeps live bait option as finger mullet and shrimp become harder to find during the winter. Some of the most popular artificials include the shrimp varieties from Zman, Vudu, and Billy Bay along with the slim swim and trout trick paddle tails from Zman. The River Watch Café and Gift Shop on the pier has several varieties and jig heads to choose from. The winter sheepshead started showing up in November and typically hang around until February or March. As the water cools many pier anglers shift from fiddler crabs to fresh mussels when targeting large sheeps. One way to reduce having your bait picked is to make a small hole in the shell and hide the hook inside for the best chance of landing one when the shell gets crushed. Owner size 2 and 4 mosquito hooks are commonly used by pier anglers as are Gamakatsu 1’s and 2’s. Other migratory species such as bluefish will be well on their way south, but schools migrating from off the New England coast could pass through. Make sure to keep an eye on the water temperature and take advantage of some good fishing before Old Man Winter takes hold. If you enjoy the parade of boats you should watch here on December 14 at our Holiday Cheers on the Pier. Enjoy some live acoustic music and a hot or cold beverage as boats pass very close to the end of the pier. Event runs from 4:30pm – 7:00pm and the boats will go by sometime between 6pm and 7pm. H
istorically the winter winds and swell can make for a slightly churned up ocean. This actually creates ideal conditions for drum and trout. Sunrise with a moving tide is a pristine time to target those bottom-feeding surf fish. When the ocean is calm, a 1 or 2-oz. sinker will suffice with a light to medium action rod no bigger than 7 ft. If the current picks up, increase the sinker an ounce or two. The goal is to have just enough weight to rest on the sandy floor but not get caught in pier Nice Sheepshead pilings or rock groins. Just in case, a few yards of braid following the leader can help prevent severing your line on a sharp edge. As for placement, cast anywhere directly behind where waves are breaking to about 50 yards past. Many Drum, Trout, and Sheepshead feed in shallower surf than one might expect. Barrier islands tend to shift and move and so do their beaches. Keep an eye out for newly formed gullies, as they can be a great place for fish to feed. -Joey Crawford | jcrawford@ccprc.com

Winterizing Your Boat
ere in the Charleston area, many people feel that it just doesn’t get cold enough to winterize their boat. However, we have seen plenty of freeze damage before in our area. As a matter of fact, we had a record breaking number of engine replacements this year. Often, insurance will not cover damage caused by freezing temperatures. Freeze damage is the result of extreme cold temperatures over a period of time. One night of 25 degrees likely will not be a problem, especially if we go above freezing the following day. But several days at 25 without a warm up would cause damage. One of the advantages of outboard power is that outboards are much less susceptible to freeze damage. Unlike outboard motors, the cooling passages in stern drive or inboard outboard engines are horizontal. This doesn’t promote natural draining of the cooling system when trimmed down as in an outboard. We recommend running a marine approved antifreeze through the engine to provide freeze protection during harsh winter months. Of course, full winterization means that you won’t be able to enjoy your boat on those beautiful warmer fall or winter days, unless you want to do it again. If you choose not to winterize, be sure you have a plan to drain your block or provide additional engine room heat on those winter cold snaps. Regardless of your engine power, do not forget fresh water, air conditioning and generator systems. Be sure to drain these systems thoroughly or flush with antifreeze. Winterizing isn’t just about engine freeze protection. Allowing your boat to sit idle for several months at a time degrades fuel and is not good for your engine. Proper lay-up techniques can reduce start up hassles next spring. Fuel systems not being used over several months have the potential to build up varnish & corrosion inside the lines. Any ethanol blended fuels can phase separate, introducing water into the fuel system. Injectors sitting static also have the potential to stick. Use a good fuel additive recommended by your engine manufacturer in the fuel system to help prevent fuel related issues.
Prior to winter lay-up, also be sure your battery is fully charged and that there is no draw on the battery. Some equipment may still drain the battery with switches off, so keep a battery charger running on the system or disconnect the battery if practical. Every boat and situation is different. Focus on Fishing Winter Sheepshead

I
t is that time of year when local anglers and visitors gear up and prepare to target winter Sheepshead. What makes December, January and February prime months to target large Sheepshead is not because large Sheepshead have not been around through the spring, summer and fall months.
be difficult to lace on a hook, if one is not experienced. If there are still some small predators hanging around stealing the soft bait from your hook, an angler can still use small pieces of pantyhose or purchase fine netting or even small bait bags used for Catfish to put the soft bait in and then push the hook through the material. This will allow the soft bait to stay on the hook longer and make it harder for the smaller fish still around to steal the bait off of the hook. A large Sheepshead will grab the whole thing in most cases and allow you the opportunity to go for a hook set when those black and white ninja-like fish take a bite. That’s right, ninja-like fish because in most cases, you will never know they were there. That’s what makes fishing for large Sheepshead so much fun. Like I have said before, it becomes a competition between you and the fish. It is because during those warmer months, the Sheepshead have a lot of competition feeding on the same diet as them, like Pinfish, Spot, Porgy, Pig Fish, Puffer Fish, Spade Fish, etc. These smaller species of scavengers and crustacean feeders are aggressive and move around faster than most Sheepshead, intending to reach the bait on your hook before large Sheepshead can get to it themselves, making it difficult during the warmer months to land large Sheepshead. Large Sheepshead are large for a reason, and here in the Lowcountry, a large Sheepshead means a smart, cautious, careful, experienced adult Sheepshead, and they are large for that reason. A lot of anglers will find themselves landing a lot of small Sheepshead between 5 in. and 16 in. This is because Sheepshead within this range are younger and inexperienced and will take advantage of what food is available that seems to be on their diet, and for those anglers that are not familiar with a Sheepshead’s lifecycle may be surprised to learn that a 23 in. Sheepshead is about 20 years old—in some cases, older. This is how long it takes for these fish to reach weights between 8 lbs. and 16 lbs., depending on their food source. This is why it becomes important to release a decent amount of large Sheepshead caught so that these old adults can breed a healthy, strong gene pool of offspring that will become their next generation. So, why does it become easier to target these larger fish in the winter? It is because of those scavengers and crustacean feeders I mentioned above move out to sea in the winter, giving the Sheepshead a reprieve during our winter months. This allows anglers to use different baits than what we have been using in the summer because now we do not have all those little critters stealing it off of our hooks as bad, allowing those big Sheepshead to feed on bait like clams out of the shell, mussels out of the shell, oysters out of the shell, barnacles in the shell and mussels in the shell. Just remember that shellfish out of the shell is soft and runny and can 6 CHARLESTON

It is Time! Tips for Winter Trout Fishing.
B
y far my favorite time of year for speckled trout fishing is October, November and December, the air grows crisp the water temps finally come out of the 80’s back to the 60’s and the trout begin to really school up and feed in earnest. Several things happen in the cooler winter months that make it ideal for those memorable outings for trout. First as the water cools the algae and phytoplankton that clouds the water in the warmer months dies off and the water starts to get beautifully gin clear, since trout are sight feeders the more clear the water the better the chance of them finding your bait. Second the cooler water condenses the trout, they start to school up so once you find one your chances of getting into a mess of them is greatly increased in the winter months. Third I would have to say is the opportunity to catch a gator trout goes up tenfold. The cooler waters put the mullet in close to shore in areas where the water will heat up first in the morning hours, the big trout know this and will work the shallows for a meal especially in low light conditions. I would have to say that some of the best opportunities to catch gator trout are just before first light and just after sunset throwing topwater lures against the grass lines. During the day you are looking for current, structure and water
depth. Find a current break around some structure and throw a swimbait or twitch bait upstream from it and bounce it by the structure. Throw the twitchbait and if you get nothing after a couple of casts then throw the swimbait along the bottom. When I go trout fishing I always have three set ups ready to go, the first has a Spook Jr tied on for topwater, the second has a Rapala X-Rap twitchbait for mid water column action and the third has a Zman Slim Swimz in opening night on an 1/8oz eyestrike jighead to work the bottom; without fail at least one of these will generate a bite for me. This December marks the time of year when Lowcountry Kayak Anglers puts on “Trout for Tots” kayak fishing tournament for speckled sea trout. The Entry fee is a new unopened toy or a cash donation to the Toys for Tots organization. There will be prizes provided by our sponsors for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place fish. The Southside Fishing Report December Forecast for Kiawah, Seabrook & Edisto Islands
D
ecember is here and it has turned into winter overnight. With temperatures changing from 75 to 45 in a short time period it has cooled the crowds on the water as well. The bite is still going strong with the trout and redfish and the sheepshead bite has really picked up inshore. The water clarity has improved with the cooler temps and changing the color patterns has worked wonders on the schooling speckled trout. The trout have been hanging around ledges near creek mouths and flats and have been bunched up in good numbers. A slower retrieve and changing color pattern to some duller less flashy baits like : white, black and clear with flake has boosted the number of trout bites with the clear water. The redfish groups are starting to school up and moving onto the shallow flats for warmth and protection from dolphins. The redfish are still feeding aggressive trying to pack on some weight for winter, bait such as fresh cut mullet and blue crab has been working best but we have had some good days throwing top water lures and scented jerk baits as well. The biggest change over the last month has been the amount of sheepshead that we have been catching while targeting redfish around structure, mostly on blue crab and shrimp. If targeting sheepshead I would recommend using a shorter Carolina rig with #1 or 2 Owner Mosquito hook and using fiddler crabs for bait, and using blue crab and live shrimp to get some of the larger fish. With the water temperatures dropping into the low 60’s most of seasonal species have started moving South and offshore to warmer waters such as: sharks, tarpon, jacks , and mackerel. Out at the reef we have been doing well with the bull redfish, schooling bluefish and tons of weakfish, mostly with live and or dead bait bottom fishing. Hard jigs and soft plastics have been outfitting bait when the blues and weakfish are schooling. Get out on the water and enjoy the outdoors without the warmer water crowds. Captain
