ost folks associate the word “gators” with big scaly reptiles or a college mascot. Mention gators to a cadre of hardcore inshore anglers and you are likely to elicit fond memories of 30-plus-inch silver flanks speckled with black spots and gaping yellow mouths sporting a wicked pair of canine teeth. I’m talking about seatrout, big trophy trout that prompt some of us to wake up at 4 a.m. so we can be on the water throwing topwater plugs at first light. Big trout don’t act like their smaller brethren, and the techniques that hammer schoolies won’t work on bigger fish. Most gator trout are caught on shallow grass flats 1 ½ to 3 feet deep. Look for flats with dense grass mixed with a few sandy potholes that big trout use to ambush prey. The flat should also have a healthy supply of bait like mullet or pinfish, and it should be close to deeper water, so a wary old trout has a short escape route. During the hottest days of summer, big trout retreat to deeper water off the edge of a flat or seek out shade under mangroves or docks. During the coldest nights of winter, gator trout move into deep channels, canals and dredge holes where they can be targeted with sinking plugs and shrimp imitations worked slowly along the bottom. Seatrout see well in low light, unlike their prey items, like mullet. So, big trout feed best during low light. It is best to

fish early mornings, late evenings, on overcast days and at night. It may seem counter intuitive, but more trophy trout are caught on artificials than bait. Big trout are loners. Lures allow you to cover a lot of water, increasing your odds of intercepting bigger fish. About 80 percent of an adult seatrout’s diet is fish. With that in mind, large mullet-imitating lures are a good choice. The classic gator trout lure is a topwater “walk-the-dog” bait like the venerable Zara Spook. Of course, big swimbaits and shallowrunning plugs also work, along with soft plastic shrimp. A seatrout doesn’t grow to trophy size by being stupid. Big trout are wary and will evacuate a flat at the slightest indication of danger. Hull slaps and pressure waves from a drifting boat put wise old trout on high alert. It’s best to ditch the skiff and either wade or fish from a minimally invasive vessel like a kayak. It also helps to make long casts to get your lure in front of a fish before it detects your presence. Catching a true gator seatrout is not easy, and even when you do everything right there is still an element of luck involved. When you finally catch that trophy fish, handle with care and release her gently. A mature female seatrout can release over a million eggs during a spawn. Let her go to release her big-fish DNA into the gene pool.

Charleston’s February Forecast

ebruary is the last month of winter here in the low country. This is also the last month to find redfish in large schools. That means great sight fishing for redfish on the flats in and around the Charleston area. The redfish are in large schools of 100-200 fish per school. This winter has been very cold. The fish are still active but moving slower with colder water temps. These fish can be found in shallow warmer water, and since the water is so clear, you will be able to see the fish very well. I typically look for calm, warm days when the tide is low in the mid morning or early afternoon. The warmer water draws the redfish to the very shallow areas and also puts them in the mood to eat something. If you fish a school for a while and the fish will not eat, you may need to find another school that has moved into warmer water. On the other hand, sometimes it pays to stay put and be patient. I have fished a school for an hour without getting a bite, but then when the tide changed or the water warmed up we caught fish every cast. One important thing to remember is the large schools of fish can spook easily, so be very quiet when approaching the school and make long casts to the fish so as not to spook them. Another important thing to remember is that cold water will slow the fish down. You want to work your bait or fly very slowly to give the fish time to eat it. If you think you are fishing slowly, slow down more. Because fish are moving slowly and eating small things, you should fish small baits or flies. I like to use very natural colors this time if the year. I will either go with something olive-clear like the water or something dark brown- black to match the bottom. Another tip is to use ultra light rods so you can feel the bite. Sometimes the bite can be very subtle. I like to use light action rods in the 6-12 lb class with no more than 10 lb test line. The days will get longer as the month progresses, so the time you can sight fish will increase. Follow these tips and you will find some excellent and exciting sight fishing. I had some of my best redfish days last February so if you don’t get out and fish when you can you are missing some great action.

The Southside February Forecast By Capt John Ward

Folly Beach, Kiawah, Seabrook & Edisto Islands ebruary is upon us and we are in the last leg of the winter fishing season. This is a great month to tackle a list of boating and fishing projects while old man winter is still hanging around. There is always something to be done on your boats, from annual service, detailing and waxing, and I would rather tackle theses projects in the winter because of the weather and sometimes slower fishing. If you are not servicing your engine yourself , it is a great time to get it into your local dealership for a service, because they are usually in their slow season which makes for faster turn around and sometimes winter special rates. Now back to the fishing, Inshore fishing has been good with large schools of redfish on the flats. We have been having our best luck on warmer sunny days with lite wind near low tide. The fish are not overly aggressive, but are extremely spooky due to clear water and heavy pressure from fisherman and dolphins. Giving the fish plenty of space and a stealthy approach to the school has been the key to a productive day. I have been downsizing the baits, leader size, and weight to help produce a bite with skittish fish on clearer water days. Soft plastics have been working well on the flats either rigged on a small jig head or flutter hook, with a slower than normal retrieve. Some of the schools that have had a little more pressure we have convinced them to eat by pitching and soaking chucks of mullet and crab and being patient. Water is a little colder than normal with some large cold fronts moving through in January and with temps hovering in upper 40’s. Hopefully we are on the backside of old man winter, and spring will be here sooner than later. The red drum, trout and sheepshead have been much more aggressive and cooperative on warmer days with rising barometer. On warmer days we have been fishing grass and oyster banks with popping corks with either live or artificial baits , and on cooler days fishing deeper (8-15 feet) slow rolling soft plastics on 1/4 and 1/2oz jig heads with soft plastics. The sheephead have been stacked in high number around dock pilings and rock walls,doing best while using fiddlers or oysters with small sharp j-hooks with short leaders. Out at the nearshore reef, there are tons of seabass but not a lot of variety, but we have found some nice sheepshead and a few weakfish and winter sharks hanging near the structure. Take advantage of the non existent crowd on the water and boat ramps before the busy season. Mt.Pleasant Pier February Forecast By Chris Pounder

he Mount Pleasant Pier forecast for February fishing is similar to the ones from the past few months. Until the water temperature starts to climb above 60 degrees we typically see anglers focus on sheepshead and trout. Look to target these species on the incoming tide when possible. With everyone looking for the same fish in a handful of locations, this is a good time to remind everyone of a few things. Thanks to Coastal Angler Magazine and social media posts from our fishermen, sheepshead have become THE fish everyone wants to catch from the pier. Sheepshead are caught from one end of the pier to the other, but during the winter months we see better results in deeper water. With multiple anglers wanting to fish those areas any given day, it’s important to share the space and let everyone in on the fun. Pier rules allow for 2 rods per person in the water at a time. We appreciate fishermen that share the space, help each other out, and make memorable experiences for all involved. Fresh mussels seem to be the most reliable bait when targeting the local population of sheepshead. Gamakatsu sizes 1 thru 4 live bait hooks pair great with mussels and are popular among regulars. Fiddler crabs, oysters, and sand fleas also make good bait; however, fiddlers may be difficult to find when it’s cold out. The River Watch Café and Gift Shop on the pier carries frozen sand fleas, Gamakatsu hooks, and a variety of other bait and tackle items to help you land the big one. In addition to sheepshead, you may find trout lurking under the pier waiting for an ambush strike. Anglers have success targeting trout during the last 2 hours of the outgoing tide and the first 2 hours of the incoming tide when the water first starts to spill back onto the flat. Artificials like Vudu, Zman, and Billy Bay are popular choices. When throwing them you’ll want to cast your line parallel to the pier and work it back at various depths. As the water gets colder you’ll want to slow your retrieve. For more information feel free to stop in and chat with us. To Think Like a Fish By Jiggin Jerry

“I wish, I wish, I wish I were a fish.”

hat is what Don Knotts sang in the movie The Incredible Mr. Limpet. I do not wish to be a fish personally, especially knowing there are people like myself out to catch me! But, to think like a fish, that’s what I want to do. When the average person thinks about the idea of fishing, the first thing they picture is a pole, some string, a hook and a piece of bait, and you are fishing. In some cases, that’s true. That is all you would need to fish, but then there are those who have taken it steps further. They have bought fishing rods with reels, special fishing lines, different types of bait, different types of lures and different kinds of rigging, and they have gone out and they have fished. Some have done okay. Some have become anglers and moved steps beyond others in successfully targeting different species of fish. Using different fishing techniques, different size rods, different size reels, that can make a big difference when it comes to sport fishing, but about all of it, to truly become a successful and brilliant fisherman is to be able to think like a fish. In order to think like a fish, or in order to think like the fish you are targeting, it requires research, studying, sometimes years of practice and experience. The sooner one starts, the sooner they become the angler that they would like to be. Now this sport is not for everyone. It does take patience. It does take skill. But, the only way to find it if it’s for you is to try. The majority of those who have tried it, they began to love the sport, and I would like to help you with that journey. To think like a fish, there are all kinds of subjects involving fish and their species that you would want to target for the knowledge. The number one is the fish’s staple, food, what do they eat? Then you would take it a step further, well, now that I know what they eat, where does their food come from? How do they find it in the wild? Where do they find it in the wild? When do they find it in the wild? Why is that food there only during that specific time of the year? In learning details like this, you start to understand why that species of fish you are targeting arrives

in those locations. Other things to understand about the species would be their spawning habits and migrating habits. In learning that about a species, you can understand how to track and find them. Then you would take it a step further. In trying to understand their daily routines, where are they during this time of day? Where are they during this type of temperature? How do they react to this kind of weather? As you become advanced and you start to understand individual species of fish and their habits, you will begin to realize that there is so much more to fish. You ask yourself, do fish have feelings? When I say feelings, I am not talking about you yelling at them and they cry and swim away, but I am referring to emotions. The answer is yes. In knowing how these fish respond by their emotions can make a difference in how successful you become as an angler. Making a fish angry and knowing how to do so can almost guarantee you a strike on an artificial bait or any bait if done at the right place at the right time. Sounds confusing at first, doesn’t it? But, allow me to throw you a reference to help you better understand how the mentality of the fish and its mood can aid you. Say freshwater, for instance, you are targeting Largemouth Bass, already known for its aggression. This species of fish is a vigorous feeder and fighter, but this species of fish changes its personality and attitude through the seasons, and sometimes you have to make the fish angry, creating an anger strike, a strike that is caused after the fish has finally said to itself, “Leave me alone! Get away from me! Stop bothering me!” You find yourself pulling up close to a bank. You spot a beautiful large Bass, let’s say in the 6 or 7 pound range. Your heart starts to beat, but you slow down your movements, trying not to spook it. You notice that the Bass seems timid, moving slowly, could be a female, could be a male. You think about the time of year you are fishing. It’s early spring. It’s just before spawning season. The fish is probably only interested in finding a mate and making a nest. You notice it moves up and down the bank but only about 10-15 yards back and forth. You ask yourself, can I see a nest? Does the fish already have a nest? Because in some states, you are not allowed to fish for Largemouth Bass while spawning,

but you notice there is no nest nearby. This fish is just going through the motions. You throw a couple of lures by it. It turns and looks in its direction then just turns away and keeps its slow swimming pace. As an experienced angler, I have learned to become patient. I could just give up on this fish and leave right now, but I know that if I can make this fish angry by antagonizing it with a lure that catches its eye, something it would consider a threat or a pest, I can cause this fish to strike by anger. So, I take a small flashy worm with a weedless hook. I toss it out just behind the fish as it is swimming forward. I twitch it quickly right over its head and just past it. The fish looks up quickly but I just go with it and I reel it in. I repeat this over and over, 10 times at least. I notice every time I have done it, the fish has gotten more aggressive. I can see it clearly. Its color tones have changed. Its fins are fluttering. Finally, I toss the worm in again. No, this story is not just about Bass fishing, this story is about thinking like a fish. This can be done with all kinds of species of fish. They all have unique personalities, unique lifestyles, and learning as much as you can about each one of them will take your abilities as angler further than you could ever imagine. It’s Cold Outside !

elcome to the coldest part of the year in my opinion and at least it’s one of the shortest months! It can be hard to get motivated to bundle up and go but it can be worth it! I haven’t been able to go fishing as much this winter since I got Covid and had me side lined and then some of my friends had the same problem! I guess if you happen to get sick in the winter months you don’t miss out on as much! This is the time of year you can typically get on some decent sheepshead out at the reefs and of course wahoo if you get lucky enough to push on out offshore! I’m sure we will be given a few milder days to get out on some schooled up reds as well! This time of year the water is pretty clear thanks to the oysters working overtime and those red fish have the bluest of blue tails in the coldest of months! I always think of a paintbrush when I see those bright blue tails! Fun to release them and see which way they decide to swim away to. Well hope you stay warm and bundle up and go catch you a few blue tails! CATCH SMALLMOUTHS IN THE MOUNTAINS OF NORTH CAROLINA

ere in the western North Carolina mountains, we get a lot of visitors. Snowbirds are what we call people who come here from up north to enjoy our milder climate. One snowbird most fishermen cherish is the smallmouth bass. We are at the southern end of their natural range, and almost all of our watersheds contain some. Smallies have characteristics that endear them to anglers. They are aggressive, eat year-round, grow to respectable size and when hooked spend as much time out of the water as in.

You can find these beauties in most of our sizeable rivers. River fish seem to be more active in summer. I think it’s linked to terrestrial food items being more available. Floating area rivers like the Tuckasegee, Little Tennessee, Hiwassee and French Broad will keep you in fish regardless of your preferred method. For fly guys, any minnow or crawdad imitation will draw strikes, and in warmer weather nymphs and hoppers get their attention. Poppers and sliders can be lots of fun, just remember river smallies tend to be smaller than their lake buds. I spend more time chasing lake fish. There is less competition from other anglers, and average size is much better. Winter and early spring are the best seasons, in my opinion, only because the females are chock-full of eggs. It is when we catch our largest fish of the year. Many methods produce, and I throw a lot of jigs and jerkbaits. Lake fish have a variety of forage, so anything resembling threadfin shad, blueback herring or crawdads fits their menu. Dropshot, Shaky head and wacky-rigged worms all catch fish. Average depth for smallies year-round is 45 feet, or so. However, our clear mountain lakes allow them to identify prey up on the surface. Don’t shy from throwing topwater just because you mark fish deep. Especially when they are feeding up pre- and postspawn, you’ll find smallmouths on rock or gravel, where they love to eat little lobsters. They also suspend in open water to chase shad, but this is more of a warm-water behavior. On Lake Fontana, my home lake, we troll a good bit, and it’s not unusual to find them suspended at 45 feet over 200 feet of water. I should note that while we still have good smallmouth fishing, invasive spotted bass have forced their way into smallie enclaves. For this reason, we never kill a smallmouth. If you like to eat fish, take all the spotted bass you want; they are better eating anyway. Smallies and spots use the same spawning areas and hybridize. While not good genetically, it produces a fish that has that hybrid vigor, hence the name “meanmouth.” Markings and coloration make the smallmouth one of the prettiest of all fish.
