itchin’ tubes exploded in popularity following Denny Brauer’s 1998 Bassmaster Classic victory. A month before the tournament, the legendary shallow-water pitcher/flipper was on a solid summertime jig bite on a shallow flat of North Carolina’s High Rock Lake. When the jig stopped producing during Classic week, he reached for a 3.5-inch tube and discovered the fish wanted something a little different. Brauer won the 1998 Classic pitchin’ tubes. The technique has been a mainstay ever since. Unlimited Seasonal Use Tubes get bites when nothing else will, and there are no seasonal limitations. Brauer’s win came in early August in hot shallow water. I recently caught bass on a Big Bite Bait Tour Flipping Tube from the frigid winter waters of northeastern Oklahoma.

“I think it’s definitely a year-round bait,” said Brauer. “As anglers, we initially got conditioned to think tubes were a spawning-season bait. But shoot, it’s very productive year-round. As much as anything, it’s simply a finesse tool to pitch anytime the conditions call for it.” Hook Size And Rigging Are Critical I gravitate toward the 3.5-inch tube rigged with a 3/0 Mustad hook. Following his Classic win on the 3.5-inch tube, Brauer had Strike King design a larger 4.5-inch tube so he could match it with a larger 4/0 Mustad hook he felt would put more fish in the boat. Pitch the size you’re comfortable with, but be sure to match tube size to hook size. A 3.5-inch tube demands a 3/0 hook. A 4- or 4.5-inch tube marries best to a 4/0 hook. And DO NOT bury the hook point into the tube. Instead, Texas rig it with the hook point level on the back of the tube. You’ll land more fish, and it will still perform relatively snag-free. Rattles And Weight Some people love rattles; some people hate them. I stuff a glass rattle inside the body of my tubes most of the time. Line size and worm-weight size are also personal preferences determined by water clarity and the fall rate bass seem to favor. A lot of anglers use 20-pound test with a ¼-ounce weight. Brauer goes meatier with 3/8- or ½-ounce weight and 25-pound Seaguar fluorocarbon. I’ve caught bass for years with a 1/8-ounce weight and 15-pound old-school Big Game. Watch The Line You must be vigilant in watching your line where it meets the water after every single pitch or flip. Very seldom do bass just thump a tube. It’s like they’re eating a potato chip rather than chomping a bite of rib eye. Often the line will just stop falling, and you need to set the hook! Still Charting Hits Lures are like country music artists. Some bust onto the scene, score a couple hits, and soon fade from popularity. Others prove that true talent never goes away. Pitchin’ tubes are whole lot like George Strait or Reba McEntire. They were mega stars at the time Brauer won the ’98 Classic, and they’re still playing to sell out crowds 20 years later.

here’s a daytime swordfish bite developing in the northern Gulf of Mexico off Alabama. The fish have always been there, but few anglers have figured out how to catch them when the sun is out. Dustin Bedgood, aka Capt. Fed, of Orange Beach’s FED UP Charters, has spent several years learning the area’s daytime deep-water fishery. Drawing from successful captains in wellknown deep-drop locations off south Florida and Venice, Louisiana, Capt. Fed adapted techniques to a point where he’s consistent enough to take charter clients to catch swordfish. The fishery is productive just off the continental shelf about an hour and a half ride from the Alabama coast aboard Capt. Fed’s 33-foot Freeman. During daylight hours, swordfish hang out past where the bottom drops precipitously from 200 feet into 1,000-foot depths. This is where anglers can expect a typical day of four or five swordfish bites with one fish landed. The weights average about 120 pounds, with a top-end over 300 pounds. While the fish aren’t as big as in south Florida, a 150-pound sword is more than most anglers want to handcrank from those depths, anyway. “They’re a very intense fish,” said Capt. Fed. “They can hurt you very easily.” The keys to the fishery are bottom structure, the right gear and good bait. Capt. Fed fishes in 1,000 to 3,000 feet of water, and always around some type of structure. “Whether it’s a nipple, a ledge, a canyon or a salt dome, that’s where the swordfish are,” he said. “All it takes is some little feature that changes the currents and attracts bait.” Good maps of the ocean floor and sophisticated electronics are necessary to find the right type of bottom in several thousand feet of water. On top of high-end sonar, Capt. Fed uses custom J&M Tackle Blackout Sword Rods with lots of backbone but a very soft tip. Swordfish don’t just load up on the rod. They slash at the bait first, and a soft tip is needed to

notice the bump when there’s so much line out. “Once you get it set, the rod will develop a rhythm with the waves and the current. You’ve got to watch that rod,” said Capt. Fed. “If you see it do anything that’s not normal, something has happened. That’s when you start reeling it up or dropping it down. You’ve got to tease them just like any other billfish.” Capt. Fed fishes Shimano 50W and 80W reels. The drag is set loose because swordfish have soft mouths, and battles can last an hour or more. The reels are loaded with 80-pound braid tied into a 150-foot wind-on leader of 250-pound mono with a Bimini twist. Fed uses a minimum of 5 pounds of weight, and secures Lindgren-Pitman lights to his leader with rubber bands. Bait is important, and tying it correctly takes practice. After the initial slash, the jig is up if the hook tears out or the bait doesn’t retain a natural presentation. A 10-inch squid sewn with 70-pound waxed floss around a 10/0 to 12/0 J hook is one of Capt. Fed’s favorite baits. While an average day might bring one swordfish to the boat, Fed said he’s also seen five-fish days when conditions are perfect. Swords are very sensitive to the moon, and daily feeding times seem to correspond with moonrise and moonset. Capt. Fed plans trips so there’s time to load coolers with grouper and tilefish before switching to swordfish through the prime moon position. The swordfish bite goes on year-round, but Fed said he’s noticed an April into July peak, which could be attributed to more time on the water during peak tourist season in Orange Beach. And that brings up another reason to fish the Alabama Gulf Coast. There’s plenty to keep the whole family happy while the anglers are out on the water. Capt. Charleston’s February Fishing Forecast By Captain Mark Phelps

ebruary is the last month of winter here in the low country. This is also the last month to find redfish in large schools. That means great sight fishing for redfish on the flats in and around the Charleston area. The redfish are in large schools of 100200 fish per school. This winter has been very mild. The fish are still active with the warmer water temps. These fish can be found in shallow warmer water, and since the water is so clear, you will be able to see the fish very well. I typically look for calm, warm days when the tide is low in the mid morning or early afternoon. The warmer water draws the redfish to the very shallow areas and also puts them in the mood to eat something. If you fish a school for a while and the fish will not eat, you may need to find another school that has moved into warmer water. On the other hand, sometimes it pays to stay put and be patient. I have fished a school for an hour without getting a bite, but then when the tide changed or the water warmed up we caught fish every cast. One important thing to remember is the large schools of fish can spook easily, so be very quiet when approaching the school and make long casts to the fish so as not to spook them. Another important thing to remember is that cold water will slow the fish down. You want to work your bait or fly very slowly to give the fish time to eat it. If you think you are fishing slowly, slow down more. Because fish are moving slowly and eating small things, you should fish small baits or flies. I like to use very natural colors this time if the year. I will either go with something olive-clear like the water or something dark brown- black to match the bottom. Another tip is to use ultra light rods so you can feel the bite. Sometimes the bite can be very subtle. I like to use light action rods in the 6-12 lb class with no more than 10 lb test line. The days will get longer as the month progresses, so the time you can sight fish will increase. Follow these tips and you will find some excellent and exciting sight fishing. The warm weather also has the trout still in mood to eat also. Try warm, calm days mostly in the afternoon when the water has warmed up. Use grubs, DOA shrimp or mud minnows worked very slow on the bottom of some 10ft holes. I had some of my best days last February so if you don’t get out and fish when you can you are missing some great action.

Mt. Pleasant Pier February Fishing Forecast

he winter has been mild and the sheepshead bite has been hot thru early January. It’s been several years since we’ve seen a bite this consistent with the number of impressive convicts coming over the rail. It’s been a regular occurrence to see several 7 – 8 pounders per week with a few exceeding 10 pounds. During the winter months the most consistent species to target from the pier is sheepshead. Fresh mussels seem to be the most reliable bait when targeting the local population this time of year. Fiddler crabs and oysters will also result in some nice Jeremy Eaton with 11 lb 12 oz sheep catches, but fiddlers can be difficult to find when it’s cold out. In addition to the sheeps you may find red drum schools at times prowling the large flat adjacent to the pier or trout lurking under the pier waiting for that ambush strike. Lately anglers have had some success targeting trout during the last 2 hours of the outgoing tide and the first 2 hours of the incoming tide when the water first starts to spill back onto the flat. The River Watch Café & Gift Shop on the pier sells a variety of artificial baits that have been proven to work. Stop in and chat with us and we’ll do our best to point you in the right direction and share some local knowledge that should enhance your chances. Through the end of February be sure to weigh in your sheepshead for the Winter Sheepshead Challenge. There is no cost to enter other than the daily fishing fee and the 3 biggest ones caught from the pier will win gift cards. Contest ends February 29. As of January 9, the current leader is Jeremy Eaton with an 11 pound 12 oz. beast. The last two pier record sheepshead were caught the last week of February or the first week of March in previous years so there’s still plenty of time to get in on the action. ello readers! Just wanted to take a minute to introduce myself because I am new here to the Magazine. I’m Mandy Henderson and I have been a nurse for over 10 years now. Being a nurse is as exciting as fishing! Each day you get to meet new people. However, if you have ever taken care of someone then you will know you have to learn to take better care of yourself and relax on your days off. I have found that being on the water is a great way to balance the work stress. Being on the water and making memories with friends and fishing is my favorite way to unwind. A good friend of my Mom’s is a nurse and when she comes into town we always take her out too. Well one day we had her out and she had a nice trout on the line and went to take it out and the trout slipped and the hook ended up in her finger. It was all the way in her thumb and we had no other option but to cut the barb off to get it off her finger. She took it like a champ! At first she said, “Lets just keep fishing and we can deal with it later!” Instead we cut the barb and pulled the hook out! She barely even flinched! We cleaned it out and covered it up with some electrical tape and of course antibiotics under it and she finished off the day fishing! She didn’t even cuss or fuss when we pulled it out! She just said, “Ok! Lets go fishing now!” Talk about a trooper and someone who also enjoys being on the water! We ended up having a great day and sent her home with some fresh fish. Artiﬁcial Intelligence Fish Slow, but How?

ur water temps historically bottom out mid-January, but they are still awful cold in February. Since fish are cold blooded, they are going to be pretty sluggish as a result. You’ve probably heard the following advice; “If you think you are fishing slow enough, slow down”. It’s good advice, but how is it applied? Think about what your lure is doing underwater. This month we want our lure on the bottom, and for it to move just a couple inches at a time. Watch your rod tip and consider how small a motion equates to a couple inches on your lure. At the end of a 6 to 7 foot lever (your rod), the amount of motion required is tiny. A very small motion of your wrist is all that is required. If you have access to a swimming pool, try this and you will be surprised to find you’re lure probably moves a lot more than you thought. A good technique is to use very small hops bringing your rod tip from about 10 o’clock to 12 o’clock a few inches at a time, then take in line as you slowly lower the

tip back to 10 o’clock. Manage your line! How much reeling is this? Maybe half a turn depending on your reel. A cold redfish will suck that lure in and often it won’t feel like a bump, but rather kind of a mushy weird feeling. Unlike other times of year, you might need to give him a second to eat before setting the hook. Similarly, a February trout bite will often go unnoticed, even with the best gear. All you will feel is a mysterious weight that wasn’t there before and pulling up the rod will reveal tell-tale headshakes. A small finesse soft plastic rigged on a light jighead makes a good choice. A favorite is the Z-Man StreakZ 3.75” with a TroutEye Finesse jig. The ElaZtech material is buoyant, allowing the tail to stick up when sitting still. Focus on Fishing Targeting Winter Trout

ow that the water temperatures have dropped in the Lowcountry, strong winds and cool temperatures seem to be the norm for a majority of our days during our winter months, the inshore angler starts to slow down. There’s just not as many inshore fish available during these cold months, and the chill in the air affects our abilities to move quickly and smoothly, cupping our hands and bringing them to our mouths as we blow a warm breath through our fingers to warm them up, shrugging our shoulders and tightening our jackets snug around our necks, and pulling hoodies over our fishing hats, just trying to stay warm. Just discussing it puts a chill down my spine, but we are not the only ones slowing down because of the temperatures during the winter months. In fact, one of our favorite inshore species to fish for this time of year is Spotted Seatrout, and fishing for them becomes a challenge, using slightly different techniques than an angler would use during our spring and summer months. Spotted Seatrout, like us, become slower in their movements and reactions in cold temperatures. We find younger Trout schooling and grouping up in deeper water and pools, clinging closer to the sea floor. Larger Trout between 20- to 25 inches are found scattered and usually found alone, hanging around structure and grass lines during high tides, ambushing anything on their menu that entices them into a strike. This is when the inshore angler loves to indulge in tactics using artificial baits. Artificial Shrimp, like D.O.A., Billy Bay, Vudu and Live Target, are some of my personal favorites. A quarter ounce or half ounce weight will do just fine, depending on the depth of the water you are fishing. If you are trying to bring your bait to the bottom in a 20-foot deep pool, I would recommend the half ounce. If you are working a grass line on a sunny day, the quarter ounce may be the way to go. Again, this might depend on conditions. If it is very windy, you may want to stay with a half ounce. This will help maintain control of your lure while the wind blows your fishing line like a sail on a boat, dragging your bait in the direction of the wind. Paddle-tail Grubs also work fantastic this time of year. Saltwater Assassin and Z-Man are two of my favorite brands. The Z-Man Slim Swims in 2 ½ or 3 inch is my favorite, especially in the color Opening Night. These Paddle-tails imitate Glass Minnows. Trout, during the winter, love to gorge themselves on as many of them as they can find. The trick in using the Shrimp or a Paddle-tail will be in the presentation. If you throw the bait like you would in the summer, casting it out and reeling it in with either fast left-to-right twitches, or popping it up and down quickly with fast drops, may not produce a strike this time of year, because like I explained above, the Trout are moving slowly and most likely cannot effectively chase down a fast-moving bait. I would recommend casting your lure and letting it drop to the bottom, but please remember to be careful if you are fishing over the top of an Oyster bed. You could snag your line and lose your lure. Please make sure you are aware and familiar with the location you are fishing. As the lure falls, you will wait to feel it stop on the bottom, then you will slowly drag your line toward you, by either raising your rod, or reeling in slowly, then pause, then add a slow twitch two or three times with the tip of your rod, then allow the bait to fall back to the bottom, reel in your slack, and then repeat the motion again until you bring your lure back to yourself, then recast. If you are fishing in a current, cast upstream. Allow your bait to fall to the bottom, and at the same time, reel in your slack as your lure is passing down river. Add a few slow twitches to the lure and let the water do the rest for you, just like a live Shrimp or Glass Minnow moves in the current,

then continue to repeat the same action. While fishing these techniques, you sometimes will feel a sharp thunk on the end of your line. This could be your lure crossing some debris, but in some cases, it will be a Trout close to the bottom, grabbing your lure as it slowly passes by. As you tighten your line, you will feel the Trout immediately pull back. Quickly set the hook and have fun! Just remember sometimes you will notice the strike during your next set of twitches, and if the Trout already has a hold of your bait and you move to twitch your rod, this will cause an instant hook set and fish on! The colors of the artificials will be left to you. Sometimes it helps to find the color that works best in the location you are fishing, and of course, location will be the hunt, finding the spot that the winter Trout you are looking for are hanging out on that one particular day at one particular time and during one particular tide. Yes, there can be a lot to fishing, but that’s what makes fishing so fun! I hope this helps you catch and land some nice winter Trout. Like I always say, good luck out there and have fun fishing! The Southside Fishing Report February Forecast for Kiawah, Seabrook & Edisto Islands

ebruary is upon us and we are in the last leg of the winter fishing season. This is a great month to tackle a list of boating and fishing projects while old man winter is still hanging around. There is always something to be done on your boats, from annual service, detailing and waxing, and I would rather tackle theses projects in the winter because of the weather and sometimes slower fishing. If you are not servicing your engine yourself , it is a great time to get it into your local dealership for a service, because they are usually in their slow season which makes for faster turn around and sometimes winter special rates. Now back to the fishing, Inshore fishing has been good with large schools of redfish on the flats. We have been having our best luck on warmer sunny days with lite wind near low tide. The fish are not overly aggressive, but are extremely spooky due to clear water and heavy pressure from fisherman and dolphins. Giving the fish plenty of space and a stealthy approach to the school has been the key to a productive day. I have been downsizing the baits, leader size, and weight to help produce a bite with skittish fish on clearer water days. Soft plastics have been working well on the flats either rigged on a small jig head or flutter hook, with a slower than normal retrieve. Some of the schools that have had a little more pressure we have convinced them to eat by pitching and soaking chucks of mullet and crab and being patient. With the mild winter and the higher than normal water temps the trout bite has been great. On warmer days we have been fishing grass and oyster banks with popping corks with either live or artificial baits , and on cooler days fishing deeper (8-15 feet) slow rolling soft plastics on 1/4 and 1/2oz jig heads with soft plastics. The sheephead have been stacked in high number around dock pilings and rock walls,doing best while using fiddlers or oysters with small sharp j-hooks with short leaders. Out at the nearshore reef, there are tons of seabass but not a lot of variety, but we have found some nice sheepshead and a few weakfish and winter sharks hanging near the structure. Take advantage of the non existent crowd on the water and boat ramps before the busy season. Get out on the water and enjoy the outdoors without the warmer water crowds. Boating in the Lowcountry Off Season Maintenance

ow that winter is setting in, we all long for those beautiful spring and summer days to get the boat back out on the water. But, don’t just forget about her entirely.

Now is the best time to take care of your boat and trailer so that your first adventure is hassle free. Most engine manufacturers recommend an annual maintenance with at least an oil change and perhaps a tune up. During this slower period, most dealers have much shorter waiting times, and often, off season discounts. It is also a great time to consider fixing those pesky items that didn’t work last season like navigation lights, bilge pumps and other accessories. You can also consider some technical upgrades like a new GPS. When were your batteries last replaced? Have you noticed slow starting in the past? If they were weak when the boat was put away for the winter, they

will surely be stone dead when you are ready to use the boat. Use a battery tender during the winter to keep those batteries heated up. If you do not have power available at the storage site, consider a solar powered trickle charger. Winter is also a good time to consider a detail. A good coat of wax will protect the gelcoat surfaces from oxidation and will make it easier to get the boat cleaned up in the spring. Don’t forget the often neglected trailer. This is a great time to inspect the trailer for excessive rust and to pack the wheel bearings and check for dry rotted tires. Check that your lights and brakes are working properly. Winch straps become brittle over time and should be replaced if you notice discoloration or frays. Tongue jacks are another source of frustration. They are inexpensive and easy to replace. If you wait until the first beautiful day in the spring to find out that you have problems, you could waste that day. By then, most mechanics will generate longer backlogs and you may have to wait a few more weeks to get out on the water. Dexter’s BrakeRite electronic/ hydraulic actuator features rapid response for improved braking distance, an electronic proportional pressure valve for consistent braking, and dual fill caps for easy maintenance. In addition, BrakeRite is compatible with most in-cab electronic brake controllers. Dexter offers three BrakeRite models to easily match your application. The BrakeRite Plug & Play model is simple to install. It has no hard wiring and has a large reservoir for triple axles. An optional Australian 12-pin flat plug model is also available. The Dexter BrakeRite SD model provides a complete plug-in wiring harness to simplify field installation, while the standard BrakeRite model is available in both disc and drum brake options. Dexter knows corrosion resistance is important on all types of trailers, and especially in saltwater or other corrosive environments. Dexter disc brakes for marine trailers are designed with this in mind, using brass fittings, stainless steel guide bolts and sleeves, and stainless steel pistons. Rotors are offered in multiple finishes including E-coated, Dacromet, and stainless steel. At a minimum, Dexter caliper castings and caliper mounting brackets are E-coated with options for Dacromet coating or an all stainless steel product. Dexter’s BrakeRite and disc brakes combine two high performance products. Together, they provide a proven record of performance and reliability, superior braking, in-cab control and corrosion resistance.

ooker Electric continues driving innovation in the fishing industry. Their top-of-the-line baitwell system is tops for keeping your bait fresh and lively. This system includes Hooker’s patented high-flow baitwell pumps and streamlined design that includes full variable flow that allows anglers to decide how much flow is needed depending on the species of bait they are keeping in the livewell. Also a great choice for the tuna tube setups, the system allows the perfect amount of flow to the tubes. The pumps have an outstanding high flow, measured in 2,500, 4,500 and 7,500 gallons per hour. Another huge feature integrated on the pump system is that they are mounted outside of their custom sea chest. This provides easy access and the ability to change a pump out fast, without taking the entire sea chest apart like the competitors. Hooker Electric’s custom sea chest was specifically designed around their patented pumps. The sea chest is constructed of 316 stainless steel, welded to perfection, and then passivized. Passivization is a non-electrolytic finishing process that makes stainless steel more rust-resistant to avoid corrosion from the saltwater. It is then heavy-duty powder coated for extra protection. The sea chest comes with a ¼-inch rubber gasket seal, stainless steel bolts, washers, a breather valve and acrylic lid that can be custom engraved with the boat’s name or boat manufacturer’s name upon ordering. The crucial benefit of installing Hooker’s sea chest system is simple: less air in your system, especially with step-hull boats. The sea chest allows the boat to pull clean water in and keep air out of the hoses, therefore out of the system. Paired with the sea chest, Hooker has created custom manifolds cut from a solid block of schedule 80 PVC, which ensures longevity and quality. The manifold cleans up the aesthetics on the system by simplifying it and allowing water flow to be dispersed to multiple livewells as needed. The Hooker pump system will keep you ahead of the rest when it comes to live baiting.
