ISTIOPHORUS: THE MYSTERIOUS SAILFISH

he sailfish is one of the most commonly caught billfish. Due to its proclivity for shallower coastal waters and frequency of ascension to the surface, the odds of catching one of these beauties can be much greater than for other billfish. There is little scientific certainty about the mysterious behavior of sailfish. They exhibit a general migratory pattern throughout the year, but they often break their own rules and show up unexpectedly. Summer sailfish catches are generally more associated with the Gulf of Mexico, yet they do appear on the Atlantic coast this time of year, as well. Sailfishing in the Florida Keys is usually a late autumn and early spring

bite. It can be an absolute catching frenzy. However, in July, following the passage of tropical storm Elsa, sailfish were seen tailing at the surface, cruising the waves along a strong current line off of Marathon Key. It was a bizarre and welcomed phenomenon. The conditions that followed the storm created a concise current line, with greener nearshore waters touching the blue water, and a milky powder-blue highway running down the center. Sailfish were spotted swimming east to west at the top of the waves, and seemed to dive deeper to circle back. The locals are no strangers to this phenomenon that occurs in the Keys. Though the time of year may be unpredictable, anglers are always ready to make the most of it. This type of fishing requires polarized sunglasses and a tower boat. Slowly creeping through the powder blue highway, scan the waves for black torpedo shapes or blobs that resemble black garbage bags. Hunt for the opportunity to sight cast live baits. Without the visual vantage of a tower, trolling lures or bump trolling live bait may be more productive than trying to spot them from deck level. Sailfish truly are an incredible and unpredictable species. Very few have been successfully tagged, and few have held a tag long enough to transmit much information. Of those tagged for up to a year, their patterns were generally erratic. They seem to be extremely transient, foraging and spawning in many different coastal regions, predictably unpredictable, like majestic aquatic gypsies. Commonalities in their behavior are that they primarily stay within a water temperature of approximately 80 degrees; they mostly stay near the surface, rarely diving below 300 feet; and they exhibit extremely curious evening routines. All of the transmissions showed sailfish spending the evening within 30 feet of the surface, descending briefly before sunrise and sunset. They were also observed to be active nightly, seemingly unaffected by lunar phases. or Matt Metelsky, daddy-daughter time with his 17-year-old is a little more involved than a trip to the ice cream parlor. Matt’s daughter Lily is a rising high school senior. She loves nothing more than waking up at 2 a.m. to run 85 miles off Virginia Beach and troll the edge of the Continental Shelf with her dad. In late June, the duo fished the Virginia Beach Tuna Tournament, where Lily placed second in the Lady Angler division with a yellowfin that weighed 39.9 pounds. But that’s not her biggest tuna to-date. Her heaviest yellowfin weighed 44 pounds. She caught it last summer, and at 5-foot-4 and 115 pounds, it took her about 15 minutes to haul it in stand-up with a belt. “I don’t know. We do wood work on the side, so we load wood, and I guess that gives you some back strength,” Lily offered as explanation for feats of fishing strength. “We always stay active. With Dad, it’s work hard, play harder.” Lily’s strength and stamina are a given considering she qualified and is working as an oceanfront lifeguard at Virginia Beach this summer. Matt, however, has another explanation for his daughter’s skill, as well as her love for this hard-core style of fishing. Lily was 5 years old when Matt purchased his Contender 25 with twin 150s. At a tender age, Lily cut her teeth going toe-to-toe with hard-pulling spadefish in 50 feet of water, 20 miles offshore. “I’m thinking the technique she picked up with those spades when she was little just kind of morphed over into the tuna,” Matt said. “It really amazes

me she is able to battle those things stand-up.” Lily began joining Matt for long days offshore when she turned 13. She was 15 the summer of 2019 when she was first physically able to handle a yellowfin—a 26-pounder—by herself. But pumping and reeling aren’t Lily’s only deck duties. She helps rig and bait and steers the boat while her dad deploys an eight-rod spread on the Gulf Stream. Last Jan. 11, she manned the helm while Matt battled a 550-pound bluefin. When the handle on the 50w reel broke under the stress, it was Lily’s idea to improvise with a screwdriver and electrical tape to eventually land that fish. The peak yellowfin season is June and July out of Rudee Inlet. Matt and Lily make five or six trips a summer, often with friends. Normal days consist of two or three tuna, some bonita and mahi, and occasionally a white marlin. Two or three times a year, January and February bluefin trips are just for the two of them. There aren’t many people interested in waiting on one big bite in brutal mid-winter conditions, anyway. “She’s just tough as nails,” Matt said of his daughter. “I don’t know how else to describe it. She’s just tough.” Lily doesn’t seem to perceive any hardship. She considers herself lucky to be able to spend time with her dad on the water. “When we’re out there on the boat, it’s just so peaceful,” she said. “I pretty much sleep the whole time. n August, hot hazy days and calm seas will be the norm. When the air temperatures get near 100 the water is always a nice place to cool off. Fishing early in the morning or late in the evening will be the best. When trying to decide which species of fish to target, there will be many options. You might want to go at daylight and cast some top water lures for redfish, sea trout or ladyfish. I like to use a “walk the dog” type of top water lure like the Rapala

skitter walk or Zara spook. A great way to catch a variety of fish is to drift a popping cork with a DOA shrimp or live bait two feet below along the banks of the marsh. You can still find a variety of migrating fish in August like Spanish mackerel, bluefish, ladyfish, and Jack Crevalle. These fish can be found in the Charleston 2 CHARLESTON

harbor, inlets and off the beach. Look for birds over bait or fish breaking the surface. Small spoons, jigs or flies work great for these fish. If you’re fishing on the piers or surf you can also find whiting, spots and pompano using cut shrimp. If it’s something bigger you’re looking to catch, August is the month. You can catch large redfish in the surf or rock jetties. Sharks will be abundant in all sizes and can weigh up to several hundred pounds. August is also one of the best months for catching tarpon. To catch all of these larger fish, go to the deep holes in the Charleston harbor or go off the beach or to the inlets. You can also surf fish, just make sure you use heavy tackle. You will need a reel with line capacity of 300 yards or more as these fish can scream some line off the best reels. You can use chunks of cut bait, but live menhaden are hard to beat. A great way to spend the day on the water is to book one of the area’s great guides. Having fished in Charleston for twenty five years, I am extremely knowledgeable and experienced in this area. he temperature is high and the water is hot so the morning bite has been the best. Tons of bait in the creeks and and the front beach between: shrimp, finger mullet and menhaden. Tons of variety inshore and nearshore right now, and the fish have been aggressive during the first few hours of daylight., and a few hours before sunset. Higher tides have been producing good numbers of: trout, ladyfish, and redfish along grass lines using popping corks with live bait underneath, days with cleaner water have been much more

productive . We are still fishing lower tides around structure such as docks, blow downs and oyster beds, doing well fishing on the bottom with a carolina rig with shrimp, mullet and minnows, but the bait thieves have been pretty prolific. Near the inlets we are starting to see tarpon show up in decent numbers usually following schools

of menhaden with best luck around slack high tide. During the off tides we have been chasing shrimp boats off the front beach drifting cut baits and doing well with some nice size blacktip, spinner and blacknose sharks. The nearshore reefs and live bottom have been the best bet with the summer time heat and calm summer days. Still a decent bite with spadefish near the surface of any nearshore structure, with barracuda hanging around the boat looking to steal your fish on the way to the boat. Large schools of spanish mackerel and little tunny have been hanging off the beach chasing schools of bait near the surface. Just follow the birds and we have been doing well casting small spoons and jigs. Slow trolling mullet and menhadden have been producing good numbers of: kingfish, spanish , barracuda, and a few cobia. Bottom fishing has been decent with good numbers but lots of undersize fish to weed through to get a few decent ones. Within a month things should start to cool off a bit and the bite will only heat up. Get outside and enjoy this beautiful lowcountry weather, and remember to take a kid fishing for the future of our sport. Mt.Pleasant Pier August Forecast By Chris Pounder

here’s a lot of variety to what anglers are seeing on the Mount Pleasant Pier and we expect that to continue into August and September. A good bet for this time of year is to be ready to throw a couple of different baits depending on what’s going on in the water. It’s also a good idea to bring an umbrella for shade since the few structures on the pier fill up quickly. The River Watch Café and Gift shop on the pier sells frozen shrimp, squid, finger mullet, and sand fleas or you can grab some live bait on your way out. Mud minnows or mullet can be used to target big flounder by fishing them along the bottom, or target sea trout, red drum and Spanish mackerel at various depths in the water column. Sea trout in particular will suspend at different depths so finding them can involve some trial and error. Be ready to try both bottom rigs and poppin’ corks on any given day. A great way to easily search different depths is to use a slip bobber setup. Basically this setup involves a slip knot that is tied with a piece of floss (or similar material) to your mainline and a bobber underneath it. To adjust the depth of your bait, simply slide the knot up or down, leaving a desired length of line. This is a popular method when targeting freshwater catfish, but the basic principle works great in saltwater as well. Fishing tournaments will be back in September and October. The first Cast Off Fishing Tournament will be Saturday, September 11, from 7am – 2pm. Entry is just $5 plus the daily fishing fee. Prizes will be awarded for the 3 biggest catches by weight as well as prizes for best 5 fish aggregate and youth catch. Registration is available on site the day of the tournament beginning at 7am. Charleston Surf Fishing The Running Of The Bulls Jeremy Evans By

any anglers, novice and experienced alike, stack up on the beaches with long rods and big chunks of cut bait in hopes of landing the sought after bull redfish. This species is known by surf anglers to be the most prominent in the surf during fall months from late September through November, also known as “the running of the bulls”. Although most surf anglers target bull reds during this time, you can learn to be successful year round. Many of the big bull reds go offshore during

the winter months but not all, if there is a food source they will stick around. They primarily stick to deeper water but they also like areas that have hard structure. Look for areas with ledges or rock formations such as jetties. Choose to go in the early morning or late evening with a high or low tide. Bull reds like choppy moving water so avoid slack tides. Your choice in location is just as significant to being successful at landing bull reds as is choosing the right gear. To be successful, start with a heavy surf rod that is 11-12 foot in length with an 8 ounce weight rating. Your choice of reel should be a 6000-8000 size with 50-65 lb braided line. Next, pick a single hook bottom rig with a 7/0-8/0 circle hook and an 80-100lb mono leader (or equivalent in wire leader). The next step is bait selection which is simple, but should not be overthought. Big mullet 12-16” in size are best. This size mullet is ideal cut bait for the hook size that you’ll be using. In addition, bigger mullet have tough skin which will stay on the hook longer in the surf. Other baits that can be used to catch bull reds include dead shrimp, whiting, blue fish,

bonita, blue crab, manhedien, and boston mackerel. With the right setup, a good location and proper casting techniques, it will allow you to reach areas where bull reds like to hang out. he dog days of summer are upon us! There is nothing like getting out on the boat to beat the heat! August is always a fun month filled with different adventures for me. I’m fortunate enough to get to go to the keys and go diving for lobster and fish for snook and juvenile tarpon!

Here in Charleston the tarpon start showing up more so in August! I have still yet to catch one here in SC but maybe that will change this month. The warm water temperatures bring some big boy tarpon to the Lowcountry and I enjoy seeing all the pictures of them! Definitely keep those big boys in the water if you get lucky enough to get one. My only luck has been with smaller ones in Florida but I keep thinking it’s just practice for the day I get a big one on the line! Last summer I was on the boat when my friend Mikey hooked into one and within a minute it jumped and then was off to the races and off the line. It was an amazing experience to have witnessed it in SC! Our guess was that it was a good 130 pounds but that’s just a quick glance guesstimate. We always joke that we just can’t see them in our dirty water compared to the water in the Florida Keys. Can’t

Freshwater Report - August By Chad Pennell

reshwater fishing in the Low Country is still putting out some wonderful catches, although the fishing can be tough! Extremely hot temperatures combined with constant fluctuating water levels can make for slower fishing. The Largemouth bass seem to be moving out to deeper depths, bream fishing seems to be excellent, and the catfishing remains hot (with some big ones being caught). The hot days, pop-up thunderstorms, and changing water levels have pushed the larger bass out deep. On Santee Cooper Lakes - brush piles, ledges, and stump fields are becoming the high percentage areas for bass. There is still a topwater bite early in the morning and late in the evenings. Big jigs, large worms, spinnerbaits and crank baits are shining right now on the deeper structures. On the Cooper River, the last

deeper, cooler water. Redworms and crickets have accounted for most of the bream. The catﬁsh are completing their spawn. Some are still being caught shallow, but

South Carolina Billfishing & Offshore Report By Cameron Rhodes

y the time this column hits newsstands, the South Carolina Governor’s Cup Billfishing Series will have wrapped up for the year. The final event, the Edisto Invitational Billfish Tournament, will have closed out the month of July and an unofficial winner of the Series will be sitting at the top of the fleet. We’ll cover all of that exciting news next month. For now, let’s take a look back at the Carolina Billfish Classic, the second leg of the 2021 Series. Weather on the first day of the tournament was pretty snotty offshore, so all 40 competing

boats took a lay day. This collective lay day has become a welcome tradition at the tournament in recent years. Participants and their families get to fully enjoy the amenities offered at the Charleston Harbor Resort and Marina, grabbing

refreshing cocktails (I highly recommend Geoffrey’s Mud Slide) and blackened mahi tacos all while lounging poolside. It’s tough to beat the special atmosphere and excellent company. Although poolside activities can be tough to leave behind, each team eagerly pulled away from the dock on the second day of the tournament. The fleet had high hopes for a

good bite. Fishing reports hadn’t been very promising leading up to the tournament, but each captain, mate, and angler had big dreams of big blues. Fishing was tough. Some boats saw billfish but couldn’t get them to eat. Others suffered heartbreaking losses as fish broke off right before the leader was in hand. At the end of

that first day of fishing, a total of 11 billfish had been released: 1 white marlin, 3 blue marlin, and 7 sailfish. The Lucid Interval had the lead with the first blue marlin release in the tournament, however the win was still up for grabs, especially if fishing improved. Catch reports on the last day of fishing definitely did not rival what we saw earlier this season (think back to Georgetown’s blue marlin bite). That said, the fleet managed to find the fish and tally some points. None did this quite as well as Blue Sky, a 60-ft Spencer owned by Greg Smith and captained by Jay Weaver, and Glazed, a 58-ft Dean Johnson owned and captained by Miles Herring. The Blue Sky had released a sail on the first day of fishing, but needed some additional points to catch up with the boats that already had blue marlin releases. It didn’t take long for them to close that gap. Just an hour after lines went in the water, Blue Sky released a blue marlin, launching them to the top of the fleet. At this point, no other boats had doubled up on fish – the Blue Sky had a real chance of holding onto the lead. An hour or so after the Blue Sky released

their blue marlin, Miles Herring and his crew of family and friends released their first fish of the tournament. The sailfish put points on the board, but Glazed needed 600 additional points to catch the Blue Sky’s lead. They released another sail just after noon, getting them 200 points closer to a tie. An hour later, Glazed released a blue marlin with just under two hours left to fish the tournament. This brought their total to 1000 release points for two sailfish and a blue marlin. Just ten minutes later, the Blue Sky would release a second sail, bringing them to

a total of 1000 points for two sailfish and a blue marlin as well. Glazed went on to clinch the win based on time. A total of 9 blue marlin, 1 white marlin, and 19 sailfish were released during the tournament. Glazed also took home the award for top youth angler for the second year in a row. Miles Herring’s 12-year-old son, Woods Herring, released both of the sailfish caught aboard the Glazed during the Carolina Billfish Classic. The Right Soft Plastic Lures for the Job

t is August in the Lowcountry, and we now officially have just under two months left of summer before the first day of autumn arrives on September 22nd. The inshore water temperatures are at their max. Some inshore species will try to congregate in deeper holes where the water is cooler. Others will wait for high tide to move into the grasses and the small creeks and flats to feed aggressively, chasing live Shrimp, Crabs and small fish like Finger Mullet and Mud Minnows, and a large number of inshore anglers love to cast a number of artificials that resemble these marine species. One of the best ways to do this is by using soft plastic lures. Yes, there are hard plastic baits that can handle the job. They come in all shapes and sizes but nothing moves like a soft plastic artificial. But, what is the right soft plastic lure for the job? This will depend on your location, the depth of the water you are fishing and the technique you are using. The three most popular soft plastic lures when it comes to inshore fishing are Paddle Tail Grubs, Curly Tail Grubs and artificial Shrimp. There are a large number of manufacturers that are now producing these types of soft plastic lures. Some of the most popular are D.O.A., SaltWater Assassin, Z-Man, Live Target and Vudu. So, let’s discuss how each one of these soft plastics work. Let’s take a Paddle Tail Grub vs. a Curly Tail Grub. Let’s keep in mind that artificial Grubs do come in different sizes. One of the most common sizes is three-inch, but you can find them a lot larger. So, what would be the drastic difference between a Curly Tail and a Paddle Tail? When you reel them in, both types of tails wiggle. The Paddle Tail Grub’s tail wiggles left to right, and the Curly Tail Grub’s tail flutters with a snake-like motion and the very end of its tail moves left to right. But, there are differences that will change the lure’s presentation. One is casting distance. A Paddle Tail Grub will cast further. The reason is because the Paddle Tail flies through the air more like a dart, and its tail does not catch much wind, whereas a Curly Tail Grub’s tail catches a lot of wind, slowing the lure down in the air, reducing the distance you can cast. Now knowing this will help you understand how they both move and descend in the water. Let’s say we are targeting Spotted Seatrout in a

20-foot deep hole during an outgoing tide, and the water is moving quickly, and you would like to cast a Grub of a particular color into that hole using a quarter-ounce jig head. You have one in Paddle Tail and one in Curly Tail. Your goal is for your soft plastic bait to reach around 18 feet before the current drags it out of the hole so you can successfully target the Spotted Seatrout. The Curly Tail Grub descends slowly into the water because just as if you were casting, the Curly Tail catches the current and slows the plastic bait down. Therefore, you would want to use the Paddle Tail Grub. It will descend quicker, dropping head first like a dart towards the bottom, allowing you to reach the strike zone and work on your presentation before the current can pull your lure out of the hole. Now let’s change our scenario. We are now fishing and targeting Spotted Seatrout and Red Drum in eight feet of water near a grass line with a cluster of Oysters on the seabed. The object would be to cast a plastic lure towards the grass line and bring it through the strike zone around six-feet deep and either successfully entice and hook your game fish or retrieve your lure before the lure reaches the bottom. Now that you know that the Paddle Tail Grub casts further but drops quickly and would take a faster retrieve, moving it out of the strike zone faster, trying to keep it from getting hung up in the Oysters, you would obviously want to use a Curly Tail Grub. You should easily be able to make a cast to the grass line, and the Grub should drop slow enough to cover plenty of water before dropping to the bottom, allowing you more time to work your presentation and retrieve your lure or hook the fish you had targeted. Another popular soft plastic lure is artificial

Shrimp. The first thing we would like about an artificial Shrimp is to look as real or like a Shrimp as possible. After all, we are trying to trick our game fish into believing that they are real. So, what are the differences between one artificial Shrimp or another? Please remember, like the Grubs, artificial Shrimp come in different sizes, but the most popular sizes are three-inch and four-inch, and different manufacturers design artificial Shrimp that differ from each other. Some I chuckle to say don’t look like Shrimp at all. We would want to refrain from using those artificial Shrimp. Live Target manufacture one of the most realistic artificial Shrimp on the market. The Shrimp are made of a stiffer soft plastic. This means that the body of the Shrimp will not move realistically in the water but yet still works quite well. Vudu artificial Shrimp are designed with a cloth material molded in with the body, allowing them to form the tails of the artificial Shrimp in split sections. This gives the artificial Shrimp a lot of body movement and helps attract and entice game fish into a reaction strike, a well made and attractive artificial. D.O.A. has been making artificial Shrimp for a long time. The design of their Shrimp is basic and comes in a large number of colors. It has a stiff soft plastic body and is almost straight and eight straight peg legs and two protruding eyes. This is a very popular Shrimp. They work under popping corks very well, and depending on the angler’s experience with a fishing rod, they can be twitched around and reeled in, creating a darting action and swimming presentation that works quite well. Each one of these company’s Shrimp will come in different weights. Some of these Shrimp will allow for added weight. The choice of which of these company’s Shrimp to use will be left to the angler. In my experience, Live Target and Vudu Shrimp work better in deeper water, and I find D.O.A. Shrimp work fantastic in the shallows and grassy flats. So, now that we discussed the differences in some of the soft plastic lures used today, I hope this will help you decide what is the right soft plastic lure for the job. Late Summer Playbook By Chris Tweedy

ugust fishing in the Lowcountry brings with it a few unpredictable conditions, but with planning and flexibility, you can keep on catching even through the dog days of summer. Quick-moving thunderstorms, the afternoon heat, hurricanes, tropical storms, powerboat traffic, inundation of rainwater to the creeks and rivers are all common in August. These variables (or combination thereof) can pop up to wreck havoc with planning your weekends or time off effectively. Planning all week to chase shallow water reds up a creek only to find them missing in action when you arrive? Wanna go soak bait out in deep holes in Bulls Bay for big redfish and black drum when a steady North wind popped up on your dive to the landing? If you kayak fish in and around the Lowcountry enough, you know exactly what I mean. Late summer weather is hard to call a few days out and meteorologists seem less capable than ever even predicting real-time local storms. A solid game plan mixed with adaptability is the single best piece of intangible equipment you can carry in your quiver. As a kayak guide, I’m limited to a 5-hour fishing window with a customer and if something we plan for is not going right, we need to pivot on our gameplan to make the trip work out. Adaptability and not boxing yourself into a corner is the key to turning situations like these into lemonade. If you show up at the landing to entirely different conditions than you foresaw on your phone or in your mind ahead of arriving, being flexible and having what you need to do just that are essential. Here are a few example of some quick changeups to consider if your original gameplan goes to heck, even if it’s on the way to put your boat in the water. WIND on coast is higher than expected. 1015mph winds can blow up to 25+, making kayak fishing a bear in the open water. This situation can usually be avoided by looking closer at the weather nearer your landing than your home. Wind in Summerville can be significanltly lighter than on the actual coast so if you drive from 40 minutes inland, check the wind at Charleston Harbor not at Charleston International Airport. If needed, change your launch location. Places like Shem Creek, Bulls 12 CHARLESTON

AUGUST 2021

Bay, and the Wando River can offer access to both deep open water as well as some sheltered creeks with turns to break up the wind. Pick a spot that has flexibility built in. We’re lucky most of the public landings in town are only 5-10 minutes apart, so a move on the fly is always an option. BIG STORMS and HURRICANES rip through and everyone is staying the fishing is turned off. Fish don’t go on strike, they simply ADAPT or MOVE, just like you should. If there’s a huge influx of freshwater or mucky conditions and you’re fishing the same places you would on any normal day, the fishing isn’t wrong you are. There’s always going to be more salinity and less lingering effects from rain the closer to the actual ocean you get. If a Cat 2 hurricane dumps 8 inches of water on us in 3 days, way up at Bushy Park is not the place to find your regular trout bite for a while. Think and adjust, heavy rain will drive the fish deeper and closer to open water so places like the Harbor or the backside of the islands and off the ICW become the places where the water fish want will be found until conditions return more to normal. HEAT has a big impact on us as well as the fish. The time of day in the summer, as much as the tide, can impact where fish will orient as much as anything. Move your fishing activities to when YOU’D want to be most active (very early morning, cloudy days, evening) and find time to go when you find it most comfortable and you’ll likely see the fish agree.

BRINGING IT ALL TOGETHER

To make situations like these work, having what you need to cover a few fishing scenarios is the best advice I can offer. Unless I’m headed out with customers targeting something very specific (like flood tide tailing reds), I always have the gear I need to switch a trip from one gameplan to another in short order. That means

carrying more tackle in my truck than will be used for the trip and that cover a wide array of options that cover bait as well as artificial fishing. I have a box ready to go with jigheads that can be used with either Zman plastics or thrown tipped with bait, various sizes of hooks to catch bream and sheepshead all the way up to bull reds and sharks, a selection of lead from splitshot up to 2oz egg sinkers, various swivels, leader line from 10 to 40lbs. Having cast nets and minnow buckets with me allow for a quick change and the option to match the hatch on bait fishing. I’ll keep another box with hardbody lures like topwater, suspending twitch baits, and even crankbaits, spoons, cuda tubes, and spinnerbaits for finicky reds or if we see some Spanish mackerel busting on the surface. The key is to think of anything you can possibly encounter and try to plan ahead. I say to my fishing buddies and customers that we’ll take whatever we’re given in terms of conditions and whatever the fish and nature offer in terms of opportunity. It’s this element that will dictate your success. Challenging convention is also paramount to growing as an angler and the tricky weather and patterns we deal with during the Lowcountry’s late summer offer the perfect opportunity to experiment with different techniques. Boat Landing Etiquette

hile boating is an enjoyable stress reducing activity, sometimes just getting the boat into and out of the water at the boat landing is frustrating. Overcrowded landings and lack of preparedness by many boaters causes a lot of stress. Being prepared and using proper boat landing etiquette can reduce the hassle and frustration for you and for others using the landing. If you are new to boating, consider practicing at the ramp during less busy times. Late afternoon during the week is generally a good time to practice. Charleston area landings get full very quickly on beautiful weekend days and holidays. Consider getting to the landing early in the day. This way, you will avoid the traffic, get your boating done before the real heat of the summer afternoon, and recover your boat before the return crowd clogs up the landing again. First, if it has been a while since you last used your boat, consider using muffs and start the engine on the hose before you leave. There is nothing worse than getting to the landing only to find you have a dead battery or other engine problem. Next, load everything in the boat and secure the drain plug prior to heading out to reduce ready time once there. The only task you should worry about at the landing is removing your trailer straps. Once at the landing, remove straps and load any other items

from the car to the boat at the make-ready area of the landing. Don’t wait until you get to the actual ramp. During launch and recovery, it is always best if one person can drive the boat and another drive the car. A little trailer backing practice in an empty parking lot will go a long way toward reducing headaches during the launch and recovery. When backing onto the ramp, leave room for others. If the ramp has room for three, try not to position the rig so that only two can utilize the ramp. Also, if you are alone, don’t dock your boat along the walkway where it impedes the use of the ramp by others. Tie it up on the outside piers and then park your vehicle immediately. very helpful. Not only will it help line up the boat on the trailer during recovery, but it makes the empty trailer more visible during backing. If you are meeting someone at the landing and do not have a trailer, do not park in spaces designed for trailers. Most landings have parking spots for cars without trailers. Or, consider meeting somewhere else and riding in with the boat vehicle. On busy weekends and holidays, be sure to pack a lot of patience when heading to the crowded landing. With a little practice and preparation, you can reduce the frustration for you and others and really enjoy the relaxing benefits of boating and fishing. If all of this seems like it’s obvious, then likely you are an experienced boater and you should be willing to help out those who are just learning. few years ago, I was casting a bank in October and as far as I know I was the only boat in the creek. The solitude was broken by a sudden strike about 50 yards away and by the time I swiveled my head to investigate all I could see was a large disturbance and a couple bait fish landing back in the water. I didn’t have a topwater plug at the ready, but I had one in my tackle box and of course I tied it on. Easing over with the trolling motor I made a cast, but the huge strike I was expecting didn’t happen. However, another blowup erupted (this time within casting range) and I quickly landed my plug nearby and the take was almost instant. After a few drag screaming runs, a 24” striper came to the net. Caught in the Cooper River By experiment, I learned that if you could land the plug within 20 feet within 10 seconds of a strike it was almost a guaranteed fish. That day, I landed 9 topwater striper and unfortunately no one to share the experience with. You know I love speckled trout, but you can’t beat a striper topwater strike. Since then, I’ve never been able to match those numbers, but I always have a rod rigged with a topwater plug within arm’s reach if I’m in that general area in the Fall. I’ve learned over the years that striper are hard to pattern. They are marauders, chasing the last remains of bait out of the estuaries and hunting as a wolf-pack, balling them up and blasting them. You may get frustrated Caught in the Ashley River trying to find them, but if and when they show themselves you won’t have time to tie on a plug until they are gone, and you won’t make that mistake again – ask me how I know! Truth be told, I’ve never fished for them in our lakes, so I am relating what I’ve learned as a saltwater angler who has become somewhat infatuated with these striped fish. I’ve tried to learn what I can about their behavior in the

coastal rivers. To try to learn more, I received permission to start tagging striper caught in the coastal rivers. I’ve yet to have one of my tags recaptured but a friend of mine has. It was a 27” fish tagged in Goose Creek and recaptured at the confluence of the Congaree and Wateree rivers – over 90 miles away. Its well known that striper travel way upriver to spawn, but of course there are always exceptions in nature. For example, I’ve caught a male in brackish water in March that was shaped like a football, absolutely full of sperm, which seems to be out of character. To find out more about what fishing for riverine striper is like above lakes Moultrie and Marion, my business partner Ralph and I chartered Capt. Justin McGrady of The SC River Guide (thescriverguide.com). Justin guides in the vicinity of downtown Columbia in the Broad, Saluda and Congaree River systems. These rivers have vastly different characteristics and are very rocky with high flow and rapidly changing water heights. Accessibility to the fish is difficult and you need to have the proper equipment to be successful. Justin runs an aluminum, shallow-draft boat with a jet-drive motor that allows him to navigate the rivers. He says one of the best parts of guiding new clients is watching their faces as he approaches the rapids and puts the hammer down. From experience, I can tell you it’s a wild ride. Justin literally knows every rock in the river and has navigable pathways that he keeps tight to his vest. As for the fishing, it’s incredible. On our recent trip with Justin, we caught approximately 30 striper in a few hours, averaging around 25 inches, all on artificial lures. We caught them on Eye Strike TexasEye jigs with Z-Man Scented JerkshadZ, topwater plugs, suspending lures, and even on the fly. The abundance and quality of the fish in these rivers is amazing

and not to be taken for granted. Justin is an outspoken advocate for the fishery and his charter business is strictly catch and release only. He believes that many of the fish in his area are resident. would be amazing if the striper can rebound in the coastal rivers as they are such an incredible gamefish. If we had a striper fishery below the lakes anywhere close to what exists above the lakes it would open up a whole new aspect of our inshore fishery in Charleston. It is my sincere hope that the present abundance of striper above and below the lakes is sustained and hopefully improved in the future. I can’t tell you what the regulations are, because, to me, they are irrelevant. When I catch a striper, it’s automatically getting released. In my humble opinion, they are way more valuable to catch than on the dinner plate, I don’t care how good they taste. CAMP FOR TROUT DEEP IN THE SMOKIES By Nick Carter

hen the boat dropped us off Friday morning, it was with an understanding someone would return for us Sunday afternoon. We debarked into two nights and three days of camping and trout fishing deep in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. With no cell service or road access for miles in any direction, we were about as disconnected as you can get in this part of the world. It was a glorious feeling. Actually, one of our guides, Jake Tallent, of Fish Tales Outfitters in Franklin, N.C., had a satellite phone/EPIRB “for emergencies.” Around the campfire one night, he admitted using it to text his girlfriend. Guess the whole out-of-touch and roughing-it fantasy is a little outdated these days. We weren’t really roughing it much at all. Tallent and our other guide, Nick Potts, rolled cartloads of gear up the trail to our campsite near the mouth of Hazel Creek. Three other clients and I sat in camp chairs and got to know each other while the guides set up camp. That set the mood for the weekend. The camping was comfortable, everything was provided for. All we were expected to do was fish hard, enjoy ourselves and return to hot meals around a campfire each evening. Hazel Creek flows through high mountains on the north shore of

North Carolina’s Lake Fontana. Road access to the north shore was completely cut off in the 1940s, when TVA flooded this impoundment of the Little Tennessee River. Abandoned, the communities that existed there returned to the forest. In three-quarters of a century since, it has become one of the most beautiful and historically intriguing areas of the Smokies. The best access is by boat across the lake. Proctor, N.C. is the ghost town on Hazel Creek. The town’s main drag, Calico Street, is now the gravel trail that parallels the creek for 15 miles up into the hills. Ruins of Proctor are hidden everywhere in the creek and up steep wooded hillsides. Tallent regaled us with history as we passed landmarks hiking upstream in search of good trout water each day. The creek itself is on the large side of typical for the park. It is cold and clear with a relatively flat gradient that makes for easy streamside hiking. A mix of boulder-strewn stretches and bedrock shoals create interesting holding water. There are also some deep, dark pools. Hazel Creek is loaded with beautiful 7- to 12-inch stream-born rainbow trout. There are also some big browns lurking in the deep holes. Over three days of fishing, we caught good numbers of fish with simple dry-dropper rigs on 3- and 4-weight fly rods. There’s nothing more fun than wading up a mountain stream to toy with wild trout that are eager to jump on a dry fly. Hazel Creek is a gorgeous place to do it.
