CAST is the world’s largest fishing trade show. Each year one of the highlights of the show is the New Product Showcase, in which companies roll out their newest and best. Coastal Angler and The Angler were there at Orlando’s Orange County Convention Center in July, sifting through all the offerings of the ICAST New Product Showcase. or anglers, sonar technology is the most rapidly advancing and functional tool in the boat when it comes to catching more and better fish. At the Orlando ICAST in July, Garmin blew the lid off the electronics industry with the introduction of its new Panoptix LiveScope. At the world’s largest sportfishing trade show, the most anticipated event each year is the New Product Showcase, in which companies present their latest and greatest in hopes of being named Best of Category. Awards are decided by a vote of media in attendance, and the Panoptix Livescope was not only awarded “Best Electonics,” it was named “Best of Show” out of 974 new products introduced in 2018. “To not only win the ICAST Best Electronics award, but the Best of Show award, too—it’s an honor we’re incredibly proud of,” said Dan Bartel, Garmin vice president of global consumer sales. “Panoptix LiveScope delivers the best of both scanning and live sonar technologies, and there’s nothing out there even close to it. These awards solidify our commitment to giving anglers and mariners the most innovative technology on the water, and they further strengthen our desire to be the top marine electronics brand in the world.” Panoptix LiveScope is a live-scanning sonar that gives anglers higher resolution and easier-to-interpret images of structure, bait and fish swimming below and around the boat than ever before. Garmin’s revolutionary Panoptix all-seeing sonar technology was the first to deliver live sonar images in real-time—forwards, backwards, sideways and below the boat—even while stationary. Now, thanks to the active scanning capabilities of Panoptix LiveScope, anglers can see images and movement so clear and precise that it’s even possible to distinguish between species of fish. “Panoptix changed the electronics game a couple of years ago,” said Jason Christie, Bassmaster Elite Series and Garmin pro. “Now, LiveScope is even taking it to the next level. The cool thing about it is the simplicity of it. What you see is what is there. The only picture that could be better is if you dive into the water with goggles, and I’m not sure that’s really even better.” Like other Garmin Panoptix transducers, LiveScope features two modes in one transducer—LiveScope Down and LiveScope Forward— and can be installed on a trolling motor or the transom. Depending on

the angler’s fishing preferences and techniques, LiveScope can easily be adjusted to change views. Point the LiveScope transducer down to see directly below the boat or forward to see around the boat. The Panoptix LiveScope system includes a compact GLS 10 sonar black box with an LVS32 transducer and a simple plug-and-play Garmin Marine Network connector for easy installation and integration with a compatible Garmin chartplotter. ayaker’s paradise might be the perfect description for the waters of Franklin County, Fla. Skinny waters inaccessible to powerboats are everywhere. In these shallows await redfish, trout, flounder, jack crevalle, pompano and more. Even freshwater species, like largemouth bass, bream and catfish can be had. There are more than 40 canoe/kayak launches in and around Franklin County, most are found within Tate’s Hell State Forest or the Apalachicola National Forest. Kayaker options also include the seemingly endless miles of shoreline along the bays, and the Gulf of Mexico is accessible at roadside.

Seasonal patterns, at times, will dictate the available species, but most are here for the taking all year. Live bait is always a sure bet, but you can keep your load light with a handful of artificial lures and have tremendous success. If you’re here in the fall, redfish will eagerly explode on a walking topwater plug like a Rapala Skitterwalk or a Zara Spook. Nothing will get an angler’s heart thumping more than seeing these bruisers blow up on the surface and peel drag. Trout are also in full force in the fall, and a MirrOlure MirrOdine is hard to beat, but they too, will chomp topwater plugs. Jigs tipped with Berkley Gulp! Shrimp should always be part of your line-up, because they will catch nearly anything that swims. North winds can make the shallows along the Gulf perfect for a kayak fishing trip, and late summer to early fall can provide king and Spanish mackerel action that can’t be rivaled. Steel leaders and stout reels are a must because these toothy critters will strip drag like a freight train before giving up. The Carrabelle and Apalachicola rivers are teaming with bass, bream and catfish, but don’t be surprised if you get caught up just trying to take in the breathtaking scenery and wildlife found in these tidal waters. Otters, turtles, alligators and an endless array of shore birds can be seen in these pristine and diverse ecosystems. The Apalachicola Paddle Jam festival will be held Oct. 5-7. lthough the first day of fall occurs in the month of September, it sure doesn’t feel like it in any waters where redfish live. Fortunately, redfish don’t mind the heat and can be an easy target in the shallow marsh. September is a great month for kayak anglers who love the adrenaline rush of sight casting to shallow-water reds. The shrimp are maturing and abundant this time of year. On a recent trip where I fish in Texas, I had shrimp jumping into the kayak on every muddy shoreline I traveled. When fishing in scenarios such as this, I prefer to throw soft-plastic paddletails. Locating the reds from a distance can be easy when the water is this shallow and the bait is this plentiful. One key giveaway is hovering seagulls. You can bet if a gull is snatching shrimp out of the air, there are hungry fish below them. When kayaking, it depends on the distance as to whether or not I will try to chase down the hungry and potentially fast-moving school. If I am not willing to make the move, I try to watch for a pattern as to where the fish are feeding and stage my kayak in a similar location nearby. This could be along points, in the middle, or in front of drains.

On this particular trip, I noticed skittish bait and distant birds along a north shoreline. I positioned my kayak within casting distance of that shore and fan casted until I saw nervous bait. Once spotted, I would wait for them to cruise the shore into range. When the time was right, I placed my lure with the fleeing shrimp resulting in aggressive strikes. This was the pattern they held most of the day; however I did catch a few in the middle of the cove as well. If I was not seeing nervous bait, I would fan cast 360 degrees to cover more water. I even had a few keeper-sized trout hanging out in the hot, shallow and muddy marsh. This area was roughly 10 feet deep throughout with a silty mud bottom, and the water color closely resembled chocolate milk. The air temp was in the mid 90s, but that didn’t deter the fish from feeding midday through 5 p.m. The strikes were violent and gave the illusion of each fish being larger than they were upon landing them. September brings a change in the season, but it is much more noticeable on the calendar than on the water. Capt. Charleston’s Fishing Forecast for September

eptember is a month of transition in Charleston. The very hot and humid days of summer will continue. However, by the end of the month, cooler mornings and shorter days start to replace the 90 degree days. Because of this, fishing will undergo several changes. This will be the last month to target all the summer migrating species of fish that come north in the summer and move south for the winter. As the first cool fronts of the year occur, the water will begin to cool. Warm water fish like Spanish mackerel, ladyfish, jacks, tarpon and sharks will be preparing to head south for the winter. This might seem early but fishermen must remember that these fish don’t like water temperatures much below 80 degrees. One thing is for sure, they need to eat a lot to store up energy for the long journey down the coast. These fish may be found near the inlets and right off the beach all up and down our coast line. When we get an approaching front, the fish will be very aggressive in feeding, often on the surface. You might see birds working above a school of Spanish mackerel as they move out of the harbor or down the beach. If the larger mullet are moving

This will be the last, and often the best chance of the summer, to catch one of these migrating species. The best fishing of the year will begin this month for the inshore species. The resident fish like redfish, sea trout and flounder are also responding to this seasonal transition. The inshore water temperature will begin dropping with the shorter days and cooler mornings. The summer months will have provided mature shrimp and mullet which are the perfect size for a hardy meal. Since some of the bait will not be around much longer, local fish will be feeding more often and for longer stretches of the day. The early morning top water bite will be in full swing. Working with favorite bait along the grassy edges or current rips early in the morning will provide some explosive strikes. Because there are so many shrimp in the water, both fish and fishermen will be able to take advantage of their cravings for shrimp. A DOA shrimp under a cork is hard to beat this time of the year. By allowing the cork to drift along the grass or over oyster bars, fishermen will be able to catch almost any of the inshore species. The redfish will still be feeding on crabs in the grass this month, providing us an opportunity to catch them. A DOA shrimp, crab imitation, or fly may be used in order to take advantage of these tailing tides to catch trophy reds in the grass. eptember has quickly become a favorite month for many locals to pier fish in the Charleston area. The oppressive summer heat has diminished somewhat, which makes spending a day at the pier a more comfortable experience. Local tackle shops usually carry live shrimp this time of year and floating one under a cork is a deadly effective way to catch sea trout, red drum, and even flounder. Large red drum specimens can be caught with regularity throughout September. The best bet to land one is to target the edge of the marsh grass during high tide. Large “bull” reds prefer mullet, live or cut, but an overlooked bait that works great is using a quarter of a blue crab. Large black drum and sheepshead may also readily gobble up a crab if offered. A great thing about September is that pier anglers will be able to target numerous species including sea trout, flounder, whiting, croaker and Andy Lybrand with 6 lb 13 oz sheepshead. The Southside Fishing Report September’s Forecast for Kiawah, Seabrook & North Edisto Island

eptember reef fishing looks to be steady and action packed. Start at the 30 foot depths and keep moving depths until you find what you’re looking for. Now’s the time to catch big redfish on the bottom. Start at Edisto 40 and if they aren’t there go to 60 feet of water. Drop cut menhaden or live menhaden, or mud minnows, until you figure out the hot bait. For spade fish throw fresh shrimp, or jelly ball pieces, on a light rod with a couple of shots. Chunk the shrimp out and let it sink into the school. Be patient…once they start to bite they get busy real fast. See a big fish on top, like barracuda, throw a menhaden on the swim path and watch the show. With bluefish, Spanish mackerel, sharks, barracuda, and all the other species available vary your baits and presentations. Use floats and/or balloons on top. Troll Rapala like stick baits. Throw big swim baits for an additional bait option. Match the bait color to the water color. In-shore. Tarpon – look for these beasts around the beaches, and the mouths of the North Edisto or Stono Rivers. Throw menhaden or other live bait. Throw it right in front of the fish when you see them roll. You can pick up trout but the focus is on flounder and redfish. With the lack of shrimp, mud minnows are the go to live bait. Expect flounder in the usual sandy places using live shrimp. For redfish throw mud minnows under docks or to any lay-down like

a fallen tree top. Throw mud minnows, or live shrimp if you can get them, under a cork on the flats or use a sinker and throw the bait to the grass lines, creek openings, points, under docks, etc… . Keep that Z-man jig head/micro swim bait handy to check for redfish and flounder. For sharks cut the head and tail off the menhaden, run a medium size hook through the bait with a 2 ounce egg sinker, throw it on a sandy flat and hold on. Romancing the big redfish and sharks under the moonlight is still going to be a great way to catch fish in September. Night time fishing in-shore is very productive especially from the beaches. For additional fun put a blue crab or cut-bait on a big hook and sinker on the flats – The Bonnet head shark bite will be terrific. T

he White Marlin Open out of Ocean City, Maryland has quickly become one of the world’s biggest and richest billfish tournaments. With over 380 boats and 5.4 million dollars on the line this year, everyone had the same plan in mind, get the biggest white marlin. Ocean City Maryland has been called the white marlin capital of the world and in 1974 The White Marlin Open was born. Everyone wants to be an angler in a big money tournament but with tournament fishing comes a lot of responsibility and pressure. A single missed bite can mean the difference between a couple million dollars or no money at all. Of course everyone wants to be perfect when hooking fish but that is not always the case. If someone misses a fish, they need to shake it off and get

ready for the next bite. Keeping high spirits on the boat with this much pressure is a big part of the game. Anglers need to be ready to stay on their feet all day and hold a rod ready for a bite. The

second you take your eyes off the spread a fish will sneak in. With millions of dollars on the line fishing against the top boats crews, everyone will do everything they can to give their boat the upper hand. Preparation the day before involves rigging dredge baits, hook baits, re-spooling reels, and making sure everything is tournament ready. Fishing these big money tournaments, dead ballyhoo and mullet are the baits of choice for dredges. It’s not uncommon to have 400+ baits ready to go on large multi-tier dredges. Along with dredge baits teams rig enough dink ballyhoos as hook baits to make it through a day of white marlin, tuna, and dolphin bites. At the end of a fishing day it’s a good idea to trip back all the light tackle reels and spool them with 25-30-pound mono. The last thing a crew wants is to lose a million-dollar fish from a little chaff on the mainline. The alarm goes off at 3am after an almost sleepless night…. it’s game time! The boats begin their 100+ mile run to the fishing grounds in search of the million-dollar white marlin. Patrick Brogan

Focus on Fishing Red Drum

ed Drum, also known as Redfish or Spottail Bass here in the Lowcountry, is an inshore fish that is well known for its fighting power. Some say that it is like catching a freshwater Largemouth Bass on steroids. I would say it’s more like if a Largemouth Bass could turn into its version of an Incredible Hulk, it would be the Red Drum. September through October is a perfect time to target this species of fish in the Lowcountry, but don’t get me wrong, this fish is great fishing three-quarters of the year. But, from September through October, the Red Drum are on the move. They will start gathering up in small and large schools, and by October, you will find large Red Drum exceeding 40 inches moving along our beaches. This all has to do with their breeding and spawning habits. Anglers from all over the country, and even some from out of the country, take vacations just to have the opportunity to tangle with one of these fantastic fish. These fish are considered a slot fish here in the Lowcountry. You are able to keep a Red Drum for consumption from 15 inches to 23 inches, and as of 2018, you can only have two of these in your possession per day. These fish can be targeted by using artificials, live bait, cut bait or even frozen bait. Red Drum like to target Finger Mullet, Pin Fish, Croaker, Perch, Glass Minnows, Mud Minnows, Fiddler Crab, Blue Crab and Shrimp. So, what will be the bait of choice as we move through September into October? I personally like to use Finger Mullet, live or freshly cut, Pin Fish, live or freshly cut, and Mud Minnows, just live. Live Shrimp can be used or frozen Shrimp with success, but keep in mind, everything loves Shrimp, which makes it a lot harder to keep your bait on the hook when even the small fish are chewing it up. Of course, the rig I would recommend for the Red Drum is a Carolina rig or drop shot rig. A lot of anglers will prefer to use circle hooks for these fish. I personally use Kahle hooks, but for anglers that do not have much experience in timing and setting the hook during a strike or do not have a great deal of success removing the hook from the inner 6 CHARLESTON

mouth of one of these fish, a circle hook between 1/0 and 3/0 would be the better choice. The circle hook is designed to slide forward out of the fish’s mouth. As the fish retreats, the hook turns and catches the fish in the side of its mouth, making it easier for the hook to be removed and safer for the fish’s release. The size of your Carolina rig will vary depending on the location where you are fishing, whether strong currents in the surf or calmer waters in the creeks. Heavier or lighter weights will be your option. I have often been asked when do you know which bait to use? The first thing to remember is which bait can you get ahold of? Not all the bait mentioned above is easily accessible, and sometimes you find yourself settling for what can be found. The other thing to keep in mind is how the Red Drum feed. Red Drum have the best of both worlds. They not only feed like a fast water game fish, but they also are scavengers like Catfish, and in the darkest of waters can detect dead fish and crustaceans and have a keen scent for fresh blood. Reading your environment and water conditions where you are targeting Red Drum can help you be successful hooking up with one of these fish. For example, if it is a cloudy day and the water conditions around you at the time are very muddy, I would not recommend using Mud Minnows. Mud Minnows are a dark little fish and cannot be easily seen without the help of clearer water conditions and sunlight. In conditions like this, I would recommend fresh cut bait like fresh caught Pin Fish or Mullet, cut into chunks. This will help the fish detect your bait quicker and more effectively. If the conditions are clear water and sunny, live Mullet or Pin Fish would be perfect in these conditions, and you can also use Mud Minnows. The Red Drum will be feeding by sight in these conditions, and the sun beaming through the clearer water will reflect off of a shiny Mullet or Pin Fish easily, making them quite noticeable. These conditions will also make it easier for the angler to sight fish a Red Drum, which means the angler can see the Red Drum swimming around hunting for its prey. This makes a great time to use artificials, casting in the vicinity of the fish. Just remember do not cast on the fish! This will scare the fish immediately and cause them to scatter and flee. And, for those of us fishing in a location where there is water during a high tide over Oyster beds, a Carolina rig would not be the best choice. It would most likely get hung up and you would lose your rig. In these cases, a popping cork would be the way to go. Just remember to set the length of line from the cork to your hook the correct depth so that your bait resides at least 8 inches over the Oyster bed itself. When using live bait or fishing in a current, the live bait will swim out on an angle while you’re using the cork technique, which will make the effect useless, so I recommend putting a quarter ounce split shot just above your live bait around 6 inches. This will not add too much weight that it will sink your cork but will keep your live bait down low above the structure where you intended it to be, and hopefully, in front of that big, beautiful Red Drum. However, if the surf temperatures get too high, they will head offshore toward the deeper ocean. Thus, September is one of the best months to pier fish for mackerel because of these specific water temperatures. We have quite a few events this month on the pier. he fishing forecast for the Folly Beach Pier during September is habitually swell, just like our waves! Salt water fish are in full force and so are the anglers. Whether you’re a pier regular or a newcomer, Folly Pier has a spot for you to cast and try your luck in our big pond, the Atlantic Ocean. The surf fish are active, hungry, and looking for shrimp, mud minnows, and mullet. Last month’s catches consisted of Spanish mackerel and Florida pompano. They are predators of other smaller fish and tend to feed in the morning and afternoon. Black drum are sure to be in the surf too, but be sure to use shrimp or minnows to lure them. Take a few steps down the pier to the diamond and you’re in the King mackerel area. The season is prime for Southeast mackerel fishing and we’re looking forward towards some delicious catches. Mackerel, who enjoy water temperatures above 67 degrees, use streaks of murky water for cover when looking for prey.

Boating in the Lowcountry Know your Fuel

E

thanol blended fuels are becoming more popular. As a matter of fact, the administration is currently pushing the use of 15% ethanol fuels, E15. When ethanol fuels up to 10% became the norm, non-ethanol fuel became hard to find. Marine engines and fuel systems were originally not designed for the damage created by any ethanol. Marine manufacturers have finally found ways to allow E10 fuel. However, it is always best to try to find non-ethanol fuel for your boat if possible, particularly if you have an older boat that has not been brought up to ethanol resistant standards. If not, use a good fuel stabilizer designed for E10 use, particularly if your fuel will remain in the system for a long period of time. Ethanol blended fuels have a tendency for phase separation over a long period of time. This makes the use of a good fuel additive imperative prior to winter lay-up. With the administration’s push to E15 fuels, boaters need to be more cognizant of the fuel used. The Boater’s United advocacy group recently stated “Small engines - like those in your boats, lawn mowers, and motorcycles can only use fuel with 10% ethanol (E10) or lower. Fuels with a higher ethanol content cause severe damage to smaller engines, putting you and your boat at risk. Expanding E15 sales before consumer protections are in place is reckless. Fortunately, there’s a solution in Congress called The Consumer Protection and Fuel Transparency Act.” This bill will protect consumers through

education and labeling on fuel pumps which will warn consumers of the dangers of E15 and remind them to check their owner’s manual for proper fuel requirements. Tell Congress and the administration to put consumers first, stop the expansion of E15 sales, and support the Consumer Protection and Fuel Transparency Act. At the very least, continue to support gas stations that still supply non-ethanol marine fuel. You can find these stations by visiting www.pure-gas.org and always make sure that your marina or dry stack supplies non-ethanol or at most, E10 fuel. The Seafood Corner By Chef Kyle Kryske Grouper

F

ishing off the coast of Charleston we are lucky to have a wide variety of grouper. There are many species but some common ones are Gag, Scamp, Snowy, Black, Red, and Red Hind. Hopefully you know where to catch these prized fish, but if not your local seafood purveyor should have some available. They are normally not inexpensive, but they are worth it. This month I am preparing fried cornmeal encrusted grouper strips with jalapenos and lemons. It is accompanied with a chipotle-tomato, and honey dipping sauce. This dish is great for an appetizer or entrée. Start by getting a few ingredients. You will need 1 small can of chipotle in adobo sauce, fresh garlic, honey, 1 lime, 2 lemons, 1 ripe Roma tomato, 1 small bunch cilantro, 2 jalapenos, cornmeal, flour, Old Bay, kosher salt, ground coriander, cayenne pepper, Dukes Mayo, buttermilk, and 1 pound of grouper Lets get to the dipping sauce first. Get a food processor and add 2 chipotles peppers out of the can, ¼ bunch cilantro, 1 T Garlic, 1 Roma tomato diced large, 1 T honey, juice of 1 lime, 1 cup mayo, and salt to taste. Puree until smooth and put in a bowl and refrigerate. Next, start

the cornmeal breading. Get a bowl and add 3 cups cornmeal, 2 cups flour, ¼ cup Old Bay, ¼ cup Kosher salt, 2 T ground coriander, and Calder Reardon, Nick Orton & Kyle Jones with Scamp Grouper 1 T cayenne pepper. caught on Penalty Box* out of Charleston Mix well and reserve. Now that the sauce and breading are prepared get your portable fryer and put it on 350 degrees. While that is heating up get your grouper and cut it into ½ inch strips, slice your jalapenos into rings, and slice ½ lemon into thin rings and place in a bowl. Coat all of it well with buttermilk. Pick the grouper, jalapenos, and lemons out and transfer to the cornmeal breading. Toss and mix well to ensure that everything is coated well and not stuck together. Put the items in the fryer and cook for about 4-5 minutes or until golden brown. Take out of the fryer and drain on paper towels. Serve it immediately with the sauce and additional lemon wedges. Lowcountry Kayak Fishing

Do you know Jack? - What you need to know to catch Pickerel

M

ention trying to find some Chain Pickerel to a local and you’re likely to get a blank stare. In many of the southern states where the Chain Pickerel range, they are known as “Jack fish” or just “Jacks”. The red-headed step child to their larger, more popular siblings the Northern Pike and the Muskie. Pickerel are often overlooked as a sport fish to target, which is unfortunate because they are superb game fish-plentiful, aggressive, hard-fighting and good looking. Chain Pickerel and weeds go together; masters at the art of ambush, pickerel will lie in or just above weeds like milfoil, hydrilla and Lilly pads. Hiding in these weeds, facing outward waiting for something delicious to appear, pickerel then launch violently with great speed snatching up their prey with a mouth full of razor sharp teeth. During the late summer months the midget jacks and the monster chainzillas are separated by water depth. Small pickerel will remain in shallow waters in and around weed beds and fallen timber along the shorelines. Typically, these smaller fish are under 2 pounds and exemplify the size most anglers catch. The bigger pickerel, those exceeding 4 pounds, will be found in deeper water. Big pickerel like cool environments and deep structure; look for deep areas near and outside weed lines, the same spots you would target big largemouth bass.

The end of summer on through September is the best time to hunt for trophy-size pickerel. But doing so requires you ignore the shallows and fish deeper, cooler water. There are a couple of great techniques for going after pickerel: (1) casting lures heavy enough to stay within the strike zone of deep holding pickerel (2) trolling spoons, in-line spinners and shallow/deep running crankbaits, or working stick baits on a drop rig 12-15 feet deep along weed edges. Those with a drive system in their kayaks will have a slight advantage with trolling.

Recommended casting lures include 5/8 to 1-once spinnerbaits and in-line spinners, 5/8 to 1 once jigs with large soft plastic trailers, spoons and crank baits that run 10-15 feet deep on a cast. On days when pickerel choose to be closed lipped, a jig rigged with a live shiner or a tapered slice of bluegill can usually open those toothy mouths! Regardless of what method or lure that you choose, use a black 6 – 9 inch steel leader or a strand of 30 – 40 pound test monofilament to guard against biteoffs. One thing to remember: although Chain Pickerel are great fighters, they are delicate fish. Unless you plan to bring one home for dinner, handle them as little as possible and keep them as wet as possible during your picture taking and release. W

e’re getting there! Fall is slowly approaching-albeit you wouldn’t know it with the heat. Yet the days are getting shorter and fishing will steadily improve if history and Charles Darwin taught us anything. Less people on the water is also a huge bonus this time of year. There is a ton to fish for in September! Tides are getting bigger with more frequency and high tide redfish are my personal top priority (Man, I hope my wife and kids don’t read this). Flies should mimic crabs or shrimp and those that contain rabbit or marabou feathers usually get the nod. Top water poppers and gurglers also work well in the flood tide grass flats (make sure your up to date on your physicals- a top water redfish will test the ol’ ticker). Try to limit the movement of flies if the situation will result in you “attacking” the fish with your fly. Just let them know it’s there, and let them eat. Sturdy weed guards should be standard. Deer season and football rivalries are to thank for the weekend pressure being lessened, but it’s the shortening days we can thank for the better fishing. Nights will start to get gradually cooler and all fish will put on the feedbag to get ready for the abundance of bait to migrate south. Survival dictates eat as much as you can before it’s over. It’s not only in saltwater, largemouth bass will move to shallower water with the cooler temps. Shallower is always better with a fly rod, at least if you want to sight fish. Towards the end of the month we should see increased numbers of false albacore nearshore. They are a fly fishers favorite, the finned rockets will test

any anglers tackle and savvy, 8wts should be fine (they run a tad small here) but a 10wt is better. Small flies like clousers, mushmouths or surf candies work well, scissors are the best item I bring albie fishing. They are very much “match the hatch” oriented and generally flies are too large and get rejected...even in an all-out blitz. Cut it in half at an angle and recast...generally works and way faster than trying to re-tie in a panic. Enjoy the weather, fish more, be courteous, and above all have as much fun as humanly possible.

T

he health of the ecosystem and abundance of our natural resources weighs heavy on the minds of some Charleston business owners. They live by the ebb and flow of the Lowcountry tides and the prosperity of their businesses greatly depend on the prosperity of the life held within its waters. They wake up each day and do what they have loved to do their whole lives, think about fishing! Fishing isn’t just a sport to them, it’s a way of life and most have dedicated their lives and businesses around it. One such business owner is the founder of RedFin Charters, Capt. Joel LeVine. Capt. Joel has been practicing catch and release with his charter company since 2012 and is an avid proponent of conservation focused resource management. According to LeVine, “RedFin Charters could be taking almost 10,000 fish per year, but we don’t do that. Instead we try to come up with ways to put 10,000 fish back.” Other industry leaders such as Daniel Nussbaum with Z-Man and Eye Strike Fishing’s Dave Fladd and Ralph Phillips dedicate time and resources each year to making fishing better for everyone. When tragedy hit the South Carolina coast in January, it affected many marine related businesses in the lowcountry, and these guys realized something had to be done. January of 2018 proved to be one of the top 5 coldest months ever recorded in the state of South Carolina and it had a significant impact on the Lowcountry’s wildlife. Charleston’s 3rd largest snowfall ever also happened on January 3rd and for almost 2 weeks, water temperatures dropped as lows dipped below freezing for 11 consecutive days. Many species of marine life were unaffected by the decreasing water temperature, but more susceptible species, like white shrimp, experienced a definite increase in mortality rates. One species that felt the effect of cold more than most is the speckled seatrout or spotted seatrout, Cynoscion nebulosus. Speckled seatrout often overwinter in the shallow estuaries in and around Charleston, and many anglers dream of catching them year round. As the mercury plummets, they often migrate to deeper water, but depend on shallow water for their prey. The survival rate for these fish decreases suddenly and dramatically when water temperatures drop below 47 degrees, and on January 7th, Charleston Harbor experienced a daily average of only 42 degrees Fahrenheit. During the following days, the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources received 164 reports of fish kills from Little River to Hilton Head Island. The amount of dead seatrout was staggering. Although not as big as the event of 2010, where cold took 93% of the population, the fishkill of 2018 will have a tremendous effect, going forward, on the native population of seatrout and the economy that thrives on it. Seatrout are the #3 most caught fish in South Carolina and have a significant recreational fishery that could be affected for many years. With a fishkill of this

magnitude, industries that rely on the seatrout population could lose a significant portion of their future income. In mid-January, SCDNR launched a voluntary catch and release program throughout the state, which caught little press, if any. Inspired by this passive recuperative action, several industry leaders developed a plan to respond to the crisis with action. In February, RedFin Charters, Z-Man and Eye Strike joined together to create the Community and Professional Response Initiative (CPR Initiative) to provide a mitigation strategy that would help recover the seatrout population. They also partnered with local fishing clubs such as Charleston Coastal Anglers and the Coastal Conservation Association of South Carolina to generate momentum for the Initiative. The CPR Initiative was also created to provide an organized response to any future critical issues that impact the Lowcountry and in February of 2018 released this mission statement: “The mission of the CPR Initiative fund is to provide support for organizations with programs and services focused on the protection, preservation, and sustainability of the diverse saltwater estuaries and ecosystems in and surrounding the South Carolina coastal

regions.” The CPR Initiative’s first undertaking was Project ReSpeck, which successfully raised $25,000 to help mitigate the gruesome 2018 fishkill. In addition to monetary contributions, each member donated time and resources to promoting the campaign and raising conservation awareness in the community. The money is designated to purchase speckled sea trout breeding tanks for the Waddell Mariculture Center in Bluffton, which can supplement the wild breeding population with 600,000 - 700,000 fish annually. The check was awarded to the Waddell Mariculture Center at the recent Coastal Conservation Association’s “Celebrating Conservation” Banquet, held at Shimano Headquarters in Ladson, SC. Although the next project for the CPR Initiative is currently to be determined, it is clear that when Charleston’s natural resources are in jeopardy we know there is a community with initiative that will respond with help where it is needed. LW Tour pro Clent Davis, of Montevallo, Ala., brought a fivebass limit to the scale Sunday, Aug. 12 that was the heaviest sack of the three-day 2018 Forrest Wood Cup on Lake Ouachita, Arkansas. Davis’ final day weight of 17 pounds, 13 ounces catapulted him from 10th to first place and earned him the $300,000 top prize. With a three-day total of 15 fish and 36 pounds, 13 ounces, Davis beat out second-place Cabela’s/Bass Pro Shops pro James Niggemeyer, of Van, Texas, by more than seven pounds. “I don’t believe that I just won this,” said Davis, a former FLW College Fishing standout for the University of Montevallo. “I almost walked away from professional bass fishing last year. I was burned out on fishing. I sold all of my gear – my boat, all of my rods, my reels, every piece of equipment that I had. It wasn’t from failure, it was because I was burned out. Davis’ decision to rejoin the tour—after some prompting by FLW Tour Senior Tournament Director Bill Taylor—was definitely the correct one. He finished the season ranked No. 25 in the Angler of the Year race—his best finish since his rookie season. He cashed checks totaling more than $62,000 in seven events and qualified for his third Forrest Wood Cup appearance. “I knew that the only way that I was going to win this week was fishing brushpiles,” Davis said. “There are so many ways to catch fish on this lake, but if it was going to happen for me, it was going to be offshore, fishing out of the brush.” Davis relied on a 12-inch, plum-colored Mister Twister Mag Buzz Worm fished in the 22- to 30-foot depths. “I fished awful all week, losing fish, but I caught enough to squeak into the top-10 by 1 ounce,” Davis said. “I’m not supposed to win

t times, success on the water comes from changing your approach. Let me share some examples. No matter what lure you choose, there’s a compelling desire to cast it as far as you can and retrieve it on the surface or just below it. Trollers insist on a full spread well behind the boat on top of the water. Anglers who prefer to drift with the current fish natural baits or artificials a distance from the boat on the upcurrent side and closer to the surface. Even those who fly kites on the offshore grounds keep live baits barely splashing on the skin of the water. The tendency in all of these examples lies in ignoring the fact that distance on the water must be measured vertically as well as horizontally. Most fish species spend the major portion of their existence at or near the bottom of the water. Consider, too, that there are some species that will suspend at mid-depth or cruise somewhere between top and bottom in search of food. Even moderate attempts to cover vertical distance as well as horizontal can make a difference. If you enjoy casting and retrieving an artificial and you have two outfits, rig one with an artificial that skims the surface or just below it and put an offering on the other that will sink to the bottom. Alternate them on casts, and you will quickly learn where the fish are in that spot. If trolling becomes your technique of choice, rig one line on a downrigger or weight it sufficiently so that it covers the mid-depth or close to the bottom. And, if you are just drifting with offerings streamed on the upcurrent side, fish at least one of the baits or lures at a reasonable depth. Probing the depths becomes even more important when there is structure on the bottom that attracts fish. Some species will hug the structure while others will probe and prowl the area. Fishing a bait or working a lure from the bottom to the surface in these waters

often is paramount to success. It is usually more productive if you focus on the upcurrent side of the structure. Veteran anglers keep an outfit on board expressly for deep jigging. It’s rigged with a leadheaded bucktail or some other type of metal that boasts the weight to get the offering to the bottom. It can be rigged with natural bait, a natural bait tail behind the bucktail or an artificial tail such as a plastic worm. It works on countless species. The key is to drop it to the bottom straight up and down and then retrieve it with a bunch of moves with the rod. You’ll find it is much more productive when the retrieve is close to the boat rather than working it to the surface at an angle. Vertical jigging won’t work every time, nothing does, but it’s a method you want to remember and use when other approaches don’t produce fish.

ike most southern ports, Charleston, S.C. offers plenty of inshore angling opportunities. You’ll find redfish in the bays, seatrout in the channels, plus flounder, cobia and spadefish on local wrecks. “Those are all fun,” said Darcy Hill (#fishcharleston), but if you want to hook something with a real sense of Southern hospitality, the inshore sheepshead fishery is tough to beat. From Isle of Palms to Folly Island, and right on up into the confluence of the Ashley and Cooper rivers surrounding the city, you’ll find these battle-ready fish hugging structure.” An abundance of sheepshead doesn’t mean they’re pushovers. Quite the contrary, Hill pointed out, “Sheepshead can be challenging to catch. You have to poke into all the nooks and crannies amongst structure points, and keep moving until you get on them.” For bank fishermen, Hill recommended public access points like the Folly beach, Isle of Palms or Mount Pleasant piers. Boaters should tie-up to pilings, docks or other structure (where legal) and fish each piece thoroughly. Sometimes, she said, moving your bait just 5 or 6 inches to one side or the other makes a ton of difference. “We generally use fiddler crabs or oysters for bait,” explained the 32-year old Folly Island resident. Bury the hook in your offering and hide the point. To get the bite started, chum with crushed oysters or barnacles. Fiddlers work best from May through February while oysters rule in cooler months. Get your line tight to structure, then lift it up slightly and drop it down slowly. Most bites come on the drop. The end of the ebb and start of the flood usually see the best scores.” Setting up for sheepshead, Hill uses a Carolina-rig with a size 1 Owner Mosquito hook, a ¾-ounce egg sinker and a 1-foot length of 30-pound test mono leader. She’ll team this with a fast-tip rod and KaskKing 3,000 series Kodiak spinning reel filled with 40-pound test KastKing Super Power or KastPro braided line. “I like the abrasion resistance of these lines,” she noted, “and that Kodiak reel just gets the job done. Last week it out-muscled a 15-pound spadefish.” Keep in mind, Hill added, that sheepshead can be light biters, so watch for line twitches in addition to feeling for strikes. Set the hook hard because these fish have a big set of teeth and tough lips. Pull straight up, not to the side. Keep your rod high and walk the fish away from the nastiest tangles as you reel up. Charleston’s inshore sheepshead average 3 pounds but can push into double-digits. Two years ago, Hill took fellow KastKing pro staffer Christin Kruger on her first sheepshead foray. “She caught a 10-pounder!” laughed Hill. Now she’s a sheepshead fan for life.” October is prime time for Charleston’s sheepshead. he action peaked at the end of August here in northern Costa Rica, with multiple sailfish releases and daily shots at marlin battles. Frank Bellizio, Bob Sherley and Chet Jasak had the trip of a lifetime with sweet sailfish and mighty marlin releases. Once they got home we received this: “I returned last week from my trip to Nosara,” wrote Frank Bellizio, of Tampa, Fla. “It was great to finally get to go fish with your team in Costa Rica. I can’t tell you how much I enjoyed the trip and will recommend Fishing Nosara to everyone. “Bob has ALS and his mobility and strength are not the best. Both Capt. William and Capt. Francisco really accommodated us so that we were able to help our friend land both a sailfish and marlin. “Bob was a diver and commercial fisherman in his earlier years. We are all 71 or older, and he said this was probably his last chance to catch a sailfish or marlin. Capt. William on the Wanderer and Capt. Francisco on the Explorer made it happen. “If Capt. Francisco wanted to, he could have ended our day earlier, but he hung in and we got the sailfish late in the day. Capt. William had to work the Wanderer over and over to keep the marlin in position so Bob and I could get it landed. These men and their crew (Johnny and Elias) are much more than just employees, they have heart, and you are blessed to have them on your staff.” Kathleen Clarke of Ottawa, Ontario came to us as a novice angler, but after her trip on the Discoverer she is a full-fledged big-time bluewater angler. “Just wanted to let you know that we had an incredibly amazing time on our fishing trip,” Kathleen wrote in an email. “I don’t think that it could have been any better. Capt. Carlos and Mate Kevin were stellar. I would highly recommend that crew to anyone. “Kevin kept the boat very clean and tidy and made sure we all had everything we needed. Lunch was excellent, also, as was the fruit. We caught a mix of mahi-mahi and sailfish, also saw porpoises and turtles.” Most recently we received this one: “Just wanted to say an enthusiastic thank you for the incredible trip we had thanks to your team,” wrote Jeff Broom, of Jacksonville, Fla. “In three days we got three marlin, two blues and a massive black, three sailfish, a huge dorado, and a good deal more tuna and mahi. “Thanks to Capt. Alex and his hard working deckhand Wilson, I was able to cross marlin off my bucket list of fish to catch. It was definitely a dream for me, and I know I speak for all the guys in our group that it was definitely the fishing trip of a lifetime! “You could tell how passionate Alex was about fishing. His favorite thing to say after we brought in a catch was, ‘Let’s get another one!’”

W

hen the Spanish conquistadors came to Ecuador, they were in search of gold. The Incas found most of their gold in the headwaters of the Amazon. I recently found gold in the Ecuadorian Amazon… golden dorado. I’ve spent 25 years on the rivers of Ecuador leading kayak and fishing trips. Three years ago, I decided to find golden dorado. Most dorado fishing occurs in Bolivia or northern Argentina. It just didn’t make sense to me that Ecuador, with such similar topography didn’t also have golden dorado. As a fly fishing guide, one of the most fun and sometimes challenging aspects of the job is finding new fishing opportunities. It isn’t unusual for my friend and co-guide, Bob Gernandt, and I to float some stretch of river we’ve never seen to develop a new fishing destination. Doing this in another country can be a bit more complicated, especially when you are heading into one of the biggest jungles in the world. Having a lodge in the cloud forest of the Amazon has allowed me to tap into local knowledge. It also helps to have a partner in-country who knows the lay of the land and can speak the language. Last February, my partner Angel and I spent a month tracking down dorado leads. Angel visited one community after another with photos of golden dorados. The first breakthrough was learning that indigenous communities call the fish by its Ketchua name, Gualo. That led us to a handful of possible rivers to check. We were dependent on local river transportation. The indigenous communities have used dugout canoes for centuries to transport people and goods in the roadless jungle. These canoes are 12-meter-long boats carved out of a tree trunk. We were able to check out three different sections of rivers using these narrow and incredibly tippy canoes. The advantage is these boats can negotiate whitewater while being pushed upstream by a 40-horse outboard. They are almost impossible to stand in, so they are not the best platform to cast an 8-weight fly rod from. We eventually transported a raft and fishing frame upstream in order to float a section of river. It didn’t take long to catch several Ecuadorian golden dorado as well as another species of fish call sabalo. Sabalo fry are the favorite food for dorado, so they are likely found together. If the sabalo survive the dorado, they grow into great sport fish. Their shape is similar to a largemouth bass, but they are much more aggressive and hard fighting. The golden dorado prefer rapids and fast water at the washout of rapids, while sabalo like smooth fast water between rapids. It presents an ideal situation for fishing because there’s no down time! Once you catch a golden dorado, you are hooked for life. These are some of the hardest hitting, hardest fighting, highest jumping fish in the world. I can’t wait to hook into more gold. ick Ratliff, 21, of Elizabethtown, Ky., a senior at Campbellsville University, will be fishing the big show when the Bassmaster Classic launches on the Tennessee River at Knoxville in March. He’s also riding around in a fully rigged Toyota Tundra that’s pulling a Nitro Z20 bass boat, and he’s holding a check for $7,500 for tournament entry fees. It’s all thanks to some last-minute heroics that helped him win the 2018 Carhartt Bassmaster College Series Classic Bracket. Ratliff fought down to the final minutes of the third day in an oh-soclose bracket against a scrappy West Virginia University junior, Nolan Minor of Charlottesville, Va. The anglers wrapped up the day with the two biggest bags of the tournament; Ratliff with 13 pounds, 8 ounces and Minor with 13-4. Ratliff, who is majoring in business administration with an emphasis in marketing, plugged along consistently, throwing a weightless wackyrigged stickworm and keeping his faith. “I had the feeling I was behind,” he said. “I kept my head down, and I knew if the Lord meant it to be, then it would be.” With just 30 minutes left in fishing time, Ratliff picked up three more fish that allowed him to cull up to his winning 13-8. Ratliff was emotional and stunned as family and friends hugged and congratulated him. “It hasn’t sunk in yet,” he said of the win and the Classic berth. “It was so close. I thought I’d lost.
