t the 2018 Our Ocean Conference in October, Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park in The Bahamas was awarded the Platinum Global Ocean Refuge Award by the Marine Conservation Institute. This prestigious award recognizes marine protected areas (MPAs) for meeting the highest standards for biodiversity protection and best practices for management and enforcement. With the award, Exuma Cays joins a prestigious group of 10 MPAs that comprise the Global Ocean Refuge System. “The Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park highlights the ability of a well-managed marine park to not only preserve the beauty of an area, but also to provide critical protection for marine life to maintain the delicate balance, and health of coral reefs and other marine ecosystems,” said Eric Carey, executive director, The Bahamas National Trust. “It also shows how no marine protected area is an island, and how outside factors, whether they be increasing sea temperatures or unsustainable fishing, can affect the ability of the park to safeguard the species and habitats within it. The Bahamas is currently addressing these issues by expanding its system of MPAs to build a network of MPAs that will replenish each other and surrounding areas, sustainably protect marine ecosystems and key species within them, while allowing human access and uses that are compatible with the goals of sustainability… The Bahamas National Trust is honored to be recognized by the Global Ocean Refuge System. MULLET RUN
When I was a kid my option for fishing
pliers was a pair of carbon steel needle nose pliers from the hardware store. I quickly learned you better wash, dry and apply oil to those pliers after every trip, otherwise corrosion would leach into the hinge and you’d need the strength of a bodybuilder to open and close the pliers. The constant oiling needed to keep these pliers loose meant you’d get rust stained oil residue on your hands and clothes every time you used the pliers. Today there’s a vast array of fishing pliers made from strong, lightweight materials that are almost impervious to saltwater. To learn about modern fishing pliers, I talked to Craig McMicken, marketing manager for danco sports, inc., the largest manufacturer of fishing pliers in the world (www.dancopliers. com). danco makes 19 models of fishing pliers. With various options of cutter and jaw materials, plus 19 colors it adds up to over

400 different varieties of danco pliers. Fortunately there are plenty of options today for pliers made from better materials, namely stainless steel, aluminum and titanium. “Stainless steel is great all around for both fresh and saltwater,” says McMicken. “They won’t rust like carbon steel.” A quality pair of stainless steel pliers doesn’t cost a lot but they are tough tools that can hold up to years of rough use. The downside of stainless steel is weight. They can weigh over twice as much as aluminum and titanium pliers. There are two locations for the cutters, either between the jaws or outside the hinge. The best location is a matter of personal preference, however if you want a pair of pliers that could cut a hook in an emergency, you need cutters that are outside the hinge so they can fit around the bend of a hook. Also, what I consider a design flaw with most pliers is a small gap at the base of the cutter blades. If you don’t line up your fishing line correctly it can slip into that gap and miss the blades entirely. Well-designed pliers, like all those in the danco lineup, include a step behind the cutting blades that eliminates the gap and ensures the line always lines up with the cutters. “Basic styles of pliers are long jaw and short jaw,” says McMicken. “Most anglers use long jaw pliers because they are easier to reach into a fish’s mouth to remove a deep hook,
but bear in mind they are not as strong as short jaws.” You might want to opt for short jaw pliers if you commonly deal with large hooks in big fish where you often need to apply a lot of torque and force on your pliers. With various accessories, modern fishing pliers can do a lot more than just remove hooks and cut line. You can have a little point at the tip of the jaws to remove split rings. Many pliers include notches and grooves in the jaws that help with things like crimping and removing split shot, crushing hook barbs and clearing paint out of jig eyes. There are also options with handles. Some include rubber covers or inserts that give you a better grip with wet or fish slime covered hands. Another important feature for plier handles is a hole for attaching a lanyard. If you are like me, if you don’t have a lanyard on your pliers it’s only a matter of time before they end up on the bottom of the lagoon. Finally, when buying fishing pliers, be mindful of quality. There are cheaply made pliers out there that look nice sitting on a store shelf but won’t hold up to rough use. ber and its usually great fishing. Sure, December marks the beginning of our winter fishing patterns, though real winter is actually another month away. Most years December sees a short lived warm spell of a week or maybe two where the cold-fronts of November go on a brief hiatus. This weather trend results in the redfish and spotted seatrout going on an extended bite. Not only feeding longer and more often than typical during the cool/cold season, but with a ferocity that has become uncommon! The usual suspects in our fishing arsenal will all work and work well. My favorite soft plastic lures from Z-Man fishing products will most certainly adorn the rods on my flats boat. Rigging a rod each with a three inch Minnowz, four inch Diezel Minnowz, four inch Jerk Shadz and finally an EZ Shrimpz all rigged weedless with EZ-Keeperz keel weighted hooks. On standby will be a TRD Craw rigged on the new Finesse Bulletz hook to offer to the extra shy tailing reds or black drum as they root in the grass for tasty morsels of Crustacea. If you find yourself struggling to locate aggressive fish go to a weedless spoon and cover lots of water as rapidly as possible. I use Aqua Dream Living spoons because they’re more versatile than most others and the hooks and weed guards are replaceable. 4 BREVARD

These spoons can be fished in the shallowest waters as long as the angler can get the spoon moving as it touches the water. This skill is worth learning for those anglers who enjoy fishing skinny water! Other hard baits on my boat this December are top-water walkers like Tsunami’s K9 Walker and their various poppers. We tend to throw “walkers” for fishing placid or rippled waters and the “poppers” for when it’s choppy or down-right rough. In my opinion the popping plugs are an underappreciated tool of the shallow water fisher. For the natural bait crowd there is no reason to give up using chunks of mullet, ladyfish or pinfish. In fact, our better redfish catches at the time of this writing have come from cut mullet! While I’ve been offer live shrimp under a popping float recently they’ve been basically ignored by the gamefish and eaten greedily by the catfish and stingrays. This will change very soon as shrimp season is coming and they will become the most important food source in the lagoon system through the winter months.

PORT CANAVERAL Captain Jim got this one to strike a Rapala Skitterwalk plugs.
Anglers are hoping that the Great fishing we had in October and November around the port extends into the December time frame this year. If this happens, there should be plenty of big redfish, shark, bluefish and tripletail to be caught along the beaches outside of the Port this month. The two key factors will be water temperature and availability of baitfish. We need water temps in the 70 to 75-degree range. This will keep the baitfish from migrating south and they are also ideal for these various species of predators that I mentioned above. Floating debris and weeds will be the most likely places that Tripletail will be found. Keep a close eye out for cobia near these floating objects as well because some of the best cobia fishing of the year can be had in the early to middle
portions of December when the conditions get right. Live pogies-(menhaden), pilchards-(scaled sardines), or fingerling mullet fished around bait pods on a knocker or fish finder rig with a 3/0 to 5/0 sized VMC circle hook should work well. Another great method is to use a HookUp bucktail or nylon jig under the bait pods. Inside the Port anglers can usually find a mixed bag including drum, jack, flounder, redfish, pompano, and sheepshead while casting live shrimp or small jigs tipped with shrimp near rocky structures and pilings. Live shrimp can be extremely effective on these species during rough weather conditions when anglers can’t make it outside of the Port. Capt. Flounder are making big smiles for our charter clients again this month.
Speckled trout, redfish, and black drum should be holding near mangroves shorelines throughout this body of water if the weather stays warm. All three will hit lures that imitate shrimp or small minnows. Try using scent products like Bang! or Pro-Cure to enhance your offering if you decide to go the artificial route. If our weather turns cold this month and northern winds whip the lagoon surface to a chop, look for these same fish near deep water structures such as bridge pilings, channel edges, and at the ends of some of the deeper docks in

this area of the lagoons system. Canals in the Satellite Beach, Eau Gallie, Merritt Island, and cocoa Beach areas can become loaded with hungry fish if the temps drop quickly around Christmas time. Live or cut baits can be best if this happens. Live shrimp, sand fleas, fiddler crab, or pilchards are often all that an angler will need to catch a good mess of fish. Cut ladyfish, pinfish, and mullet will usually work best on the redfish when the water temperatures start to dip into the mid and lower 60-degree range. It doesn’t really matter either way if the temps stay warm or start to drop into a more normal wintertime range, we will be able to target them in this body of water either way. Capt. PORT CANAVERAL OFFSHORE I hope you all enjoyed Thanksgiving and looking forward to Christmas! If you haven’t been out there lately you need to! Fishing has been awesome as it usually is this time of year.
Bunker pods have finally showed up and should continue to stay around a little while longer. Work the pods close to shore for giant red drum and other species feeding on them. Use a 50lb mono leader with a 1-2 oz weight and a 7/0 circle hook. You can Knocker rig it or fish finder rig it. Take the pogies off shore for some great kingfish action in all the normal areas. This time of year all the commercial guys are out there trying to support there families. Please do not get in their way, its already hard enough with all the garbage rules and regulations imposed on them/us. (you have no idea how hard they are making it for us) When you see them with out there doing circles just give them the space they need to fish. There’s plenty of ocean out there.

Mahi fishing has also been picking up. This is the time of year they migrate south. It’s not as good as the spring run but can definitely pay off! We have been very successful using the regular king rods and king gear for mahi. But you can always use all the typical dolphin rigs. Ballyhoo and strip baits work just fine. SEBASTIAN INLET TO EAU GALLIE
Everything has been late,
including the cold weather so far this year so maybe we will have another warm December with some good Sebastian Inlet and nearshore action. Warm Decembers can bring excellent catches of Snook, Redfish and big Black Drum in the inlet. Live Shrimp, Pigfish and Pinfish will be preferred baits in the inlet for the Snook and Reds and the Black Drum will eat Shrimp. Along with those guys, we can have some tarpon, shark and King Mackerel action along the beaches from Melbourne Beack
to Sebastian Inlet if the weather stays warm enough. With the Mullet run we had this year, we should have a decent Flounder bite in Sebastian Inlet and along the mangrove shorelines in the lagoon as well. Fish live finger mullet along the channel edges and shorelines around the tide changes. If the fronts are strong, anglers in Sebastian Inlet and along the beaches will be targeting Pompano, Bluefish, Mackerel and Flounder in and around the inlet. If the fronts are strong, look for
Trout, Pompano, Bluefish and Flounder and jacks in the Lagoon from Melbourne down to Sebastian. Fish the Spoil Islands as well as docks and shorelines with deeper edges that will hold the bait and the gamefish. I like using ¼ ounce jig heads with soft plastic jerk baits or shrimp imitations. Keep the baits deep in the water column and work them slow along the edges for the flounder and Trout. Pompano and Bluefish will like a little faster action when they ambush their prey. If the winds are up and you still want to get out, hit the creeks from Palm Bay to Sebastian. Crane Creek as well as Turkey Creek and the Sebastian River will hold Trout, Redfish, Flounder, Snook and even some Tarpon throughout the winter months. Live bait is best but don’t hesitate to work the docks and shorelines with soft plastic baits and you can stay out of the wind and have a great time catching some good fish.

are closing out another year. I hope that all you good folks out there had a wonderful and fishy 2018. Since the end of this month marks a time of reflection on the past year for many anglers it’s a great time to also look forward. Sure you have the memories of the big one you got, that one amazing slick calm day, and of course the one that got away. Those are all great water cooler conversation, but

this is also the perfect time to look forward and plan this year’s exploits while dreaming of what will be. With Brevard Countys central location in a state that is slap full of fishing opportunity’s the list of wants and possibility’s might look a lot like a young child’s Christmas list (never ending). A few of those Florida fisheries that I dream of tackling or wait on baited breath for every year might spark an interest for yourself and have you up late
nights deep in planning/preparation for the kayak fishing trip of dreams. Of course a mention of our home waters and it’s absolutely insane near coastal/ lagoon tarpon bite all through the summer months is needed. Being a lover of all things tarpon big or small means that this is fishing that I can’t get out of my head. Not to mention I haven’t met a client yet (kayak or Boat) that doesn’t enjoy hooking and fighting a tarpon of any size. They are just a blast! How about sailfish from a kayak? Well the winter months ahead hold the best conditions for a ride down to south Florida for what is a crazy day of fishing. I’ve had the opportunity to catch many sailfish throughout the years and I’ve caught all manner of ocean fish from a kayak, but never a sail from the kayak. Is 2019 my year to check that one off the list? I sure hope so! Since we are already talking about south Florida! We have to mention the crazy exotic freshwater species that have taken up residency to our south so swimmingly
(pun intended). The haunts and homes of peacock bass and clownknife fish are practically tailor made for kayak fishing. Another fun and challenging one is red snapper fishing from a beach launched kayak in the panhandle. Just let me tell you it an experience you won’t forget within this lifetime. Point is go fish! All of these tempting fisheries’ are well documented so there is tons of info for the DIY crowd, and don’t forget there will also be the charter option with top notch kayak fishing guides like myself (LocalLinesCharters. com) that aren’t hard to find and will cut that learning curve in half if not more.

Scenarios of use: Winter time brings cooler water temperatures and fish push to drop offs /ledges to stay warm and ambush easy prey. Cast the artificial shrimp across the ledge and slowly let it drop into the zone and you are sure to get a bite from a hungry Sea Trout.
Few things get my heart pumping like fishing. The pursuit of fish, whether on the flats, on the beach or bass fishing the local pond, is always a thrill. Some anglers prefer specific techniques. For example, some prefer using only live or cut bait, while others are die hard artificial lure users. As for me, it depends on who is on board my skiff but my preference is artificial lures. Artificial lures come in a variety of styles and colors and each has their own special use and purpose. But truthfully, I mostly
use one lure, an artificial shrimp. Now there are many different versions and colors of the artificial shrimp, but I prefer the 3 inch D.O.A Shrimp in clear/ gold glitter, model number 413. It’s color, flash, action and fish catching ability has proved it’s self worthy of space in my tackle box time and time again. This is the 1st of a 2 part write up on artificial shrimp, how and when it can be used and the ways it can be rigged. This first part will focus on different scenarios these baits are most effective.
As the sun rises in the sky, redfish and trout will move from the drop offs/ledges to pot holes on the flats. Cast beyond the pot hole, and slowly work your artificial shrimp, with a twitch and pause technique. In Spring and fall, artificial shrimp are deadly on tailing redfish. When redfish are tailing, they’re are actively stirring up the bottom, searching and feeding for shrimp and crabs. Casting 2 feet beyond and 2 feet in front of the tailing fish, allows you to slowly work the artificial shrimp in the feeding zone. It will be very difficult for a tailing redfish to refuse such a presentation, but be care not to cast directly on the feeding fish, as

this will cause it to spook. During the summer, hot temperatures and bright sun pushes fish to shaded structure. Pitching docks with artificial shrimp, and working the lure slowly will prove to me most effective. Snook, tarpon, trout, redfish, black drum, mangrove snapper and sheepshead can all be found in the summer months under the docks, seeking shade and ambush points for easy targets. And all will eat and artificial shrimp.

Happy Holidays from the beach front. November’s WEATHER provided a taste of what is on the menu for surf anglers this winter. The transitional period (November) was marked by northeast winds,some rough seas, cooling water temperatures and early mornings in the high 60’s range. Don’t despair, all is

not lost, we are just entering another fabulous Winter Surf Fishing Season. December should see a continuation of good fishing with a number of new arrivals ( pompano, blue fish, jacks and whiting) along with others that were not on the radar this summer.I am excited to get into the winter surf fishing season
In order to fish the winter season anglers must make a few concessions to the weather spirits before they head out. So bundle up a little and go for it, cool to cold in the AM but by 9:30 or 10:00 it warms up and our local Florida Winter Weather (70’s) kicks in for the rest of the day. Using the surf fishing baits of sand fleas,clams and shrimp for pompano,sheepshead and red/black drum or mullet for blues,sharks and jacks are favorite baits. Add clean water and you can’t go wrong for any surf fishing trip. Tip: When you purchase frozen bait for your days fishing remember to thaw it fully before using it. If you try to hook a frozen sand flea it will break the fleas shell back and it won’t stay on the hook. Hooking any
frozen bait for that matter is like trying to stick an ice pick thru an ice cube, it just doesn’t work. I suggest, upon arriving at your fishing location the first thing to do is fill the bags of frozen bait with saltwater and set them down to thaw. Then start setting up your fishing tackle and by the time you are finished the frozen baits will be thawed and ready for use.To excited to wait for the frozen bait to thaw? Then buy a bag of Fishbites either clams or shrimp and fish that until your bait thaws out enough to use. Tight Lines.

urf Expo’s Bluewater category launched last year as an examination of the crossover occurring between fishing brands and the larger market of coastal life. Since then, the show has become a must-attend event for fishing and boating retailers savvy enough to stay ahead of the trends water-loving consumers crave. The world’s largest and longest-running board and watersports show has packed the floor of its Bluewater—offshore, inshore and freshwater fishing—category headed into the Jan. 10-12 show at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando. Popular brands traditionally associated with the waterman and outdoor sporting lifestyle will show off their latest and greatest, giving retailers a hands-on first-look at the products that will drive the industry in 2019. Included in the Bluewater category are top brands like Bluewater sponsor Hell’s Bay Boatworks, Yeti, Otterbox, Fish Hippie, AFTCO, Guy Harvey, Marsh Wear, 5Fin, Salt Life, Bimini Bay, Hooked Soul, Heybo, XTRATUF, Dry Case, Bluewater Gear, Wave Life, Sunday Afternoons and more. Many of fishing’s big hitters will be there along with a huge contingent of brands that appeal to the on-the-water lifestyle. With the crossover evident in today’s marketplace, retailers and outfitters who target only their small niche are missing out on a powerful revenue source. Why sell to just the hardcore boater and angler when you could be unloading cool merchandise on the angler as well as his entire family? “The Bluewater section offers the opportunity for buyers to see the latest in trends for fishing and boating apparel and accessories at a time when retailers can leave their store,” said Kenneth Andres, with Surf Expo. “With our confluence from southern California, the Pacific Northwest, the Northeast, the Southeast, the Caribbean, Central and South America, this is a trend-setting show.” The economy is churning and consumer spending and confidence levels are higher than they have been for almost 20 years. Surf Expo is a timely opportunity for retailers to preview product for what promises to be a very busy spring season for fishing, boating and watersports retailers. “January is the best time to preview and order new product lines before the season starts,” said Andres. “Retailers can get out of their shops to talk with exhibitors and see and touch the product before they order, plus take advantage of early incentive discounts.” And for the angling marketplace, where there may be a down season but there is no off-season, Surf Expo will feature an array of exhibitors offering at-once product to fill the racks. This is an opportunity to stock the hottest new gear before the competition has even seen it. The show features more than 2,500 booths of apparel and hardgoods and a full line-up of special events, including fashion shows, awards ceremonies, education and demos. Average buyer and exhibitor turnout exceeds 28,600 attendees per show. And it’s a trade-only show, which eliminates the hubbub and massage-chair hawkers of open-to-the-public trade shows. Surf Show is intentionally held during retail down time—the January restocking period for outdoor-sports retailers—so it is a marketplace to get business done in a laid-back atmosphere. “When people come to the Surf Expo for the first time, they notice the relaxed, cool atmosphere. It’s that lifestyle we all buy into, and there are a lot of beautiful people at a surf show,” said Andres. “It’s just a great place to be if you’re in the watersports industry. E
very few years a new technique explodes on the bass fishing scene. Many of these trends just fade away, but some endure and become a part of every bass angler’s arsenal. The technique of the moment is the Ned rig. It is excellent for big numbers of spotted bass and smallmouths. It’ll catch largemouths, too. And it really shines when the fishing gets tough. On post-frontal days in winter, when bass are deep on vertical structure, it’s time to rig up a Ned and go to work. It is the perfect technique when bass are looking for a meal that is small and slow moving. A Ned rig is a miniature soft-plastic stick bait threaded on a light 1/8- to 1/32-ounce mushroom-style jighead. A drop of superglue holding the 3- to 5-inch worm to the jighead works wonders for making this rig durable. When fishing at winter depths, light line should be matched with a light spinning rod with a supple tip. Go as light as you dare, with 4- to 8-pound-test braid finished off with a fluorocarbon leader. When fish are active, a Ned worked steadily along the bottom is deadly. When they are sluggish, it’s better to let the jig sit on the bottom, allowing the bait’s vertical tail to do the work with the slightest shake of the rod tip. It’s not the most exciting way to fish, but it catches fish—sometimes when nothing else will.

hose who have seen his show “Man Fire Food” will recognize Roger Mooking as the iconic host of what has become the ultimate look at extreme outdoor or fire/smoke based cooking. Each week Roger introduces us to passionate and inventive outdoor cooking aficionados and an array of epic custom-built apparatuses designed to cook everything from 200-pound sturgeon to whole cows on a massive homemade spit. Roger’s visits give us insight into the innovative extremes outdoor cooks utilize in their pursuit of perfection. If you’re an outdoor cooking enthusiast, “Man Fire Food” is a must-watch program. We recently caught up with Roger to discuss the show’s success and rich content. CAM: Roger, your show has become a must-watch series for anyone who mans a grill. Why do you think your show has become so popular? Roger: Over the course of the last 7 seasons, we’ve seen an amazing array of outdoor and flame-inspired cooking devices and techniques featured on the show. If you love outdoor cooking, then you’re probably going to like the show. People just love being outside with loved ones. Backyard barbecues have been a longstanding tradition; in fact, you could say that tradition may even date back to the most primitive use of fire itself. There’s also something very special about slowing down and taking the time it demands to tend a hypnotizing fire and be immersed in the full experience, and getting to eat at the end of that entire adventure. The smells, sounds, sights of nature and breaking the hectic pace that a lot of us live at… it’s needed. CAM: So, you think cooking outdoors is somehow satisfying a primal urge? Roger: When I look back at some of the massive cuts of meat that have been prepared on previous episodes, it does seem like fire and food is primal, and I think we would all have to agree that cooking with wood, coals or heated rocks bridges a gap that is satisfying to those primal instincts.
CAM: What can we expect to see in future episodes? Roger: Humans all over the globe have been cooking with fire for many millennia now, and cultures all over the world have different ways of cooking with fire. I would like to explore extending the borders of the show to feature more places outside of the U.S. CAM: What advice would you offer the average outdoor cook? Roger: Just to enjoy the whole experience. I think the average outdoor cook is a more experienced cook, or else they would be a novice indoor cook. It takes a different level of attention to detail and mindfulness to cook outdoors because you have to deal with many other variables like wind, rain, keeping the fire going, how hot or cool is the fire, what are the hotspots, how much wood/charcoal do I need to add at a particular stage, bugs trying to get you, and all sorts of other things that you simply don’t have to worry about in a modern day North American kitchen with electricity and good shelter. Also, use the smoke as a seasoning advantage. You don’t need to add all kinds of stuff if you start with a freshly caught fish, some salt and a bit of good wood smoke; the work is already done, you just have to make sure you don’t get in the way or don’t burn the darn thing. It’s the magic of simplicity. CAM: How do you select the places that we see on the show? Roger: There is a very dedicated but small team of amazing people who find, research and vet all the potential locations for “Man Fire Food.” The winning candidates have endured hours of interviews and a barrage of questions as exhaustive as possible. The variables are so unimaginable to the viewer, and if we all do our jobs right, you have no idea how much work went into what looks so simple on TV. Feeding Strategies MARK SOSIN What appears obvious may be deceiving. Most anglers erroneously believe that when predators corner a hapless school of baitfish, they simply open their mouths and swim through the prey, gorging themselves in the process. It doesn’t happen that way. A predator must isolate and attack one specific victim at a time. That’s not always an easy task. A frantic school of baitfish sensing predators can appear as a shimmering mass of silver with each individual member of the school constantly changing position. Selecting a tasty morsel to ingest can frustrate even the most sophisticated gamefish. That’s one reason why you’ll find predators lurking under a pod of bait. The instant their intended prey strays from the pack, they strike. When you think about it, you can understand that any gamefish searches for a victim that is isolated, disabled or looks different from the others. Feeding is a tradeoff. Success centers on expending as little energy as possible for the food value received. Unsuccessfully chasing prey for long distances keeps a predator lean, hungry, and tends to slow it down. The easiest way to get a strike when you locate a school of baitfish starts with a cast into the middle of the school. It doesn’t matter whether you are fishing an artificial lure or a natural bait. The retrieve should work your offering toward the fringes of the school in basically the same direction in which the school is swimming or at a 45-degree angle to the basic direction. it or drifting it so that it will be disabled. Clipping a fin or two also impairs swimming motion. The injured fish will have trouble swimming, and that means it will send out vibrations that attract the attention of predators. These frantic movements to obtain equilibrium frequently trigger the strike. Even during the anticipated feast of locating a school of baitfish, certain factors come into play. As water temperatures drop, a predator will not pursue its prey as fast and as far as it would in warmer water. When you are fishing a chum slick and fish are feeding on the chum, it is much more effective to fish an offering without retrieving it. A dead drift works just fine. I’ve seen that produce inshore and offshore including tuna and sailfish. I once had an opportunity to watch scientists monitor the behavior of a school of bluefish in a massive aquarium as they attacked a school of minnows. By chance, I focused on a minnow that did not move, even when attacked by a bluefish four times. Each time, the bluefish broke off the attack because the minnow did not behave as it should. On the fifth pass, the minnow moved and it was eaten faster than you can read this sentence. Finally, if you are trolling and see a school of small fish on the surface, approach the school slowly so as not to scare them. Ease alongside the school and work the fringes or establish a position ahead of the baitfish. If you prefer to cast, keep the boat away from the school and make the cast into the school. As you retrieve your offering and it begins to clear the fringes of the school, you should get a strike.
