ater temperatures are falling. King mackerel are on the move. Wherever they roam, fall is the time to catch kingfish during their annual migration south. In the Atlantic, from the Carolinas south along the Florida coast, kings are following bait to warmer waters. The same thing is going on in the Gulf of Mexico. Kingfish that summered in the northern Gulf are splitting up. Some head west down the Texas coast. Others move east along the Panhandle and down the west coast of Florida. Wherever you fish, the next few months offer the opportunity to connect with the movements of these mercury missiles as they mingle with resident populations. The prospect for drag-burning runs is out there for anglers who pay close attention to water temperatures and stay on the move until they find the fish. King mackerel are as temperature driven as any fish in the sea. When they’re marauding baitfish, they can be found close to shore on the beaches, passes and jetties, where even shore-bound anglers have a shot at them. But most of the larger kingfish hunt over nearshore reefs in 30- to 60-feet or deeper. Deep or shallow, they’ll seek out 68- to 73-degree temperatures where they are comfortable. Watch the water temperature charts, and fish by them. Find the right temperature and an abundance of baitfish, and putting out a spread of baits will tell you quickly if there are kingfish around. Live bait is always the best bet, especially for big smokers. The best bait will depend on where you fish and what baitfish are most prevalent. Pogies (menhaden), hardtails (blue runners), pilchards and threadfin herring are all good baits if they are present. The fall mullet runs offer an abundance of good bait. A lot of tournament and charter boats put a Spanish mackerel in a spread looking for a big bite. Most importantly, baitfish should be fresh. Catch the bait that is available with Sabikis or cast nets, keep it well-oxygenated and switch them frequently. Most kingfish rigs will use a mainline of 20- to 30-pound monofilament. Obviously, with those teeth, a wire leader is essential. You should go as heavy as the fish will let you get away with—depending on water clarity—but it must remain light enough for the bait to swim. A 24-inch, single-strand wire leader of 40-pound test is a starting point. Go lighter in clear water or with smaller baits; go heavier in dirty water or if you’re fishing big baits for big fish. Leaders can be made longer for security. Hooks should be matched to the size of the bait, and it’s wise to add a stinger hook on large baits. Whether anchored, drifting or slow-trolling, a fresh chum slick is a good idea. If a king doesn’t hit within 15 or 20 minutes, pick up and go find some that are biting. They shouldn’t be hard to find this time of year.

It’s the details I obsess about – the knots, the leaders, the water temperature, the boulders that might hold fish or punch a hole in a wood boat. I am “Obsessed by Details” or OBD. I
t doesn’t get much better than watching the sun peak above the horizon with a rod in hand while schools of redfish crash baitfish all around you. Many areas redfish frequent are in skinny water, and targeting them from a kayak allows access as well as an up close and personal adventure. Kayaks have come a long way since their inception. Thousands of years ago, natives of North America’s arctic built the first kayaks of whale bones and animal skins. They used them for hunting. Today’s plastics and a wave of interest in kayak fishing over
the last decade sparked advancements in kayaks manufactured specifically for fishing. Improvements in space, stability, comfort and maneuverability are just a few of the reasons these vessels are so attractive to anglers. Add to that some of the many options available, such as peddle assist, power poles for anchoring, bait wells and super comfortable seating with lumbar support, and you have a five-star fishing platform that provides access to very skinny water. When fishing from a kayak, lightweight gear is a fun and effective way to target redfish. Light gear offers a challenge when hooked up to 5-plus-pound fish, and it also gives an advantage when casting to distant fish, especially if using braided line. Redfish in skinny water can be caught using jig heads, shrimp under a popping cork, D.O.A. Shrimp and even topwater and suspending baits. This time of year, the mullet really start getting fired up as they start migrating. As redfish actively pursue their prey, casting a topwater plug early in the morning is a really exciting way to draw a strike. Leader material is important in this type of fishing since oyster beds will fray line. Check and replace the leader as needed so the big one never gets away. Kayak fishing has really offered up a unique and exciting way to explore many different types of water. verything we do in life carries risks, even going for a drive. Wear your seatbelt, learn to be a defensive driver, and life goes on. Spearfishing has risks too, but they are manageable. A lot of people ask, “What about sharks?” I tell them, “Sharks are like dogs. The vast majority are not a threat. In fact, it’s a privilege to see them in the water. You should enjoy the sight!” Unlike the Jaws movie era, most people now understand that sharks are not mindless monsters. They are beautiful creatures, and there’s many sightseeing opportunities for tourists and photographers. On the other hand, when you are spearfishing, you don’t want to be too cavalier and shoot fish in front of sharks. They are wild animals and should be respected. One should not spear in areas where shark feeding takes place or areas known to be “sharky.” Fortunately, sharks don’t appear out of nowhere and start munching on your leg; that is not their nature. However, it is their nature to be attracted to wounded fish. The vibration attracts them even more than the blood. This is one of several reasons to strive for the killshot on your prey. If you do not achieve that, it is wise to dispatch and place your fish on the boat as quickly as possible. It’s also best to keep moving along. Don’t stay in one spot, especially in the Bahamas. Assuming you’ve done everything possible to avoid an encounter, the next most important step is to dive with a buddy, stay aware, cover each other, and don’t stray too far from the boat. Bad situations tend to escalate gradually. If one diver maintains a watch while the other is dealing with their fish, you are less likely to have a surprise encounter. A good buddy will alert you, call the boat over, and make sure the fish is landed without incident. Sharks tend to make several passes before zeroing in on the target, so there should be plenty of time to land the fish before things escalate. Like dogs, they sense fear and will be more interested if you freak out. Stand your ground, face them, assume an aggressive posture and calmly exit the water. Here’s a summary: 1. When spearing, avoid shark encounters as much as possible. 2. Try to get killshots or dispatch the fish quickly and put it on the boat. Don’t carry a stringer. 3. Move from spot to spot, even if you haven’t seen a shark. 4. Dive as a buddy team and look out for each other after shooting fish. 5. Keep the boat nearby so you can quickly unload fish and/ or exit the water. 6. Do not give up the fish to a shark. That tends to escalate the situation. 7. Do not panic or run from a shark, face them with confidence, but exit when possible. Happy hunting and see you in the water!

T
he transition of seasons always brings new opportunity and a change of pace for anglers. Summer to fall offers the richest rewards of any. It’s a time when fish are easiest to find and catch. October has an unlimited array of angling potential for species, tactics and the potential for catching an inshore slam. Let’s start with speckled trout. One of the easiest tactics to catch these fish in fall is under the birds. Typically, this yields smaller trout, but in the fall it is not uncommon to locate many schools holding keeper size trout. I fish a durable soft plastics rigged on ¼- and ½-ounce jigheads. Keeping one rod rigged with each offers several benefits. If the school is moving fast, heavier weight allows for a longer cast. It enables you to pull a few more fish out of the school. If they are really on the move, this can be
the only way to get your lure into the sweet spot. At times, larger trout hang out lower in the water column beneath smaller trout. A heavier jig gets down past smaller fish. On the other hand, you might need the ¼-ounce in order to slow the sink rate when working smaller schools, so the scattered trout have time to find it before it drops out of sight. Here’s a tip: Smash the barb on the hook down. When you are on a school, time is not on your side. You want the trout to fall off the hook once it is in the boat. This allows you to get your lure back out into feeding fish quickly. I typically sling them in without a net. Use the leverage of the rod and the momentum of reeling the fish in. It can take a minute to get the hang of this, but it saves time when working the birds. If I’m on an actively feeding school, I sling them in, let them fall on the deck and cast again. Once we are off the school, I place the fish in the cooler. I also like to wait until a shrimp jumps. Then I cast exactly to that spot. Many times this results in a solid strike. Autumn reds can be found gorging themselves in bayou mouths and marsh drains on outgoing tides as the shrimp, crabs and mullet are making their way out of the shallows. Studying your satellite maps and your tide tables for specific areas will put the odds in your favor and reds in your boat. Flounder can also be found mixed in with the reds as they are starting their winter migration. Flat fish will still be scattered but can be found starting to stage at the major passes. Autumn fishing is a great time to be on the water and a perfect time to introduce young anglers to the sport. The weather is nice, and the fish are hungry! Capt. While no fishing, conching or shelling are allowed, it offers exceptional diving and recreational opportunities. Each year, thousands of vessels visit and overnight in the park. wo fishing buddies from Pocatello, Idaho recently broke the catch-and-release state record for kokanee salmon twice in three weeks. For those unfamiliar with kokanee, it is the freshwater form of the well-known sockeye salmon of the northern Pacific. Sockeye, the salmon you find at the grocery store, are anadromous. They run out of the ocean and into rivers to spawn each fall. Kokanee also make a fall spawning run up creeks and rivers, but their lives are spent entirely in freshwater. It is thought the two species diverged thousands of years ago when

ice melt created a system of large freshwater lakes and rivers across northern North America. While the sockeye continued their anadromous lives, kokanee did not to return to the sea. In some regions the two species still interbreed, while in others kokanee have become entirely landlocked. Kokanee exist in lakes and rivers across the northern United States and Canada. They have even been transplanted into systems as far south as North Carolina. According to the Idaho State Journal, Cody Spencer and Rob Mackesey got onto a good bite as kokanee ran out of Palisades Reservoir and up Elk Creek to spawn in August. Palisades is a 16,000-acre impoundment of the Snake River that sits hard on the Wyoming border near Yellowstone National Park. Elk Creek feeds the northern end of the reservoir just upstream of the dam. Spencer and Mackesey told the Idaho State Journal they are relatively new to kokanee, but they were actually fishing for the record after they learned the existing catch-and-release record measured just 18.5 inches. For reference, the IGFA world record kokanee measured 27.75 inches and weighed 9 pounds, 10 ounces. Ronald Campbell caught the world record from Wallowa Lake, Ore. in 2010. On Aug. 19, both Spencer and Mackesey caught fish longer than the 2-year-old catch-and-release state record. Mackesey landed a 20.08-incher, and on the same day Spencer caught the 20.9-inch record setter. But the story doesn’t end there. On Sept. 8, Spencer went back and bested his buddy with a 21.5-inch male that was dressed in its full spawning regalia. Part of the allure of kokanee is their unusual appearance. For most of the year, they are silver-sided and resemble a rainbow trout. During the spawn, the bodies of the males turn bright red and they develop a hump on their backs. The catch-and-release state record is a relatively new program for Idaho that encourages the release of fish by allowing anglers to apply for the record by photographing their catch next to a measuring device. The official certified Idaho state record for kokanee is a 6.59-pounder that measured 24.5 inches. Jerry Verge caught it from northwest Idaho’s Priest Lake in 1975.

OAA Fisheries recently denied an Exempted Fishing Permit (EFP) that would have allowed pelagic longline (PLL) vessels into the East Florida Coast Pelagic Longline Closed Area. “Angler conservationists can breathe a sigh of relief that the longline EFP application is no longer a threat to the conservation gains in the E. Florida Closed Zone,” said Jeff Angers, president of the Center for Sportfishing Policy. “We will remain vigilant in protecting both this conservation zone we fought so hard for two decades ago as well as this amazing catch-and-release sailfish fishery that has grown off the east coast of Florida.”
On March 6, 2018, leading recreational fishing and boating organizations submitted public comment to the South Atlantic Fishery Management Council in opposition to the EFP. More than two decades ago, swordfish in the Western Atlantic were in serious trouble due to overfishing. The public responded forcefully to the plight of swordfish, and as a result, nursery areas were identified and closed to the United States PLL fleet in 2001. Today, anglers point to the recovery with pride as a significant conservation victory. “We greatly appreciate NOAA’s decision to keep the conservation zone off-limits to this destructive gear,” said Patrick Murray, president of Coastal Conservation Association. “Clearly the voices of recreational anglers and marine conservationists were heard. This is a great victory.” An unintended benefit of the East Florida Coast PLL Closed Area has been the establishment in the region of the nation’s best sailfish fishery. The direct economic benefit to coastal recreational fishing-related businesses and coastal economies has been remarkable. “Saltwater recreational fishing along the East Coast of Florida supports 35,523 jobs and has a sales impact of over $4 billion annually,” said Glenn Hughes, president of the American Sportfishing Association. “Much of this economic activity is attributed to the tremendous sailfish fishery that has been supported in large part by the East Florida Coast Pelagic Longline Closed Area. The recreational fishing industry is relieved by NOAA’s announcement to not put this conservation success at risk by allowing longlining back into the area.” Ever since the fishery was deemed recovered, there have been attempts to reopen the closed areas to commercial harvest and expose it to the types of intense commercial fishing pressure that drove it into an overfished condition. The permit denied by NOAA Fisheries would have authorized PLL vessels to make thousands of sets in the conservation zone for up to three years and sell all the legal fish caught.

MULLET RUN
L
ast month I covered the where and when of the fall mullet run. I’m going to assume you have that part down so we’ll get right into how to catch fish during the mullet run. I think a whole book could be written about this subject and plenty of rigs and methods work. I’ll just cover the techniques I use the most.
(Odin markets their own call Fish Smack) into the cavity. Gill slits on the side of the lure allow scent to leach out. I honestly don’t think the scent matters much for jacks, blues and mackerel, but it makes a huge difference if you want to target sharks. Blacktips and spinners will go nuts trying to eat a plug that gives out a little scent.
Topwater
Spoons
I by far throw topwater plugs more than anything during the mullet run. I love the surface strike and some of the hits you get are explosions, what my friends and I like to call, “cinder blocks falling out of the sky” hits. I use big topwaters like the Super Spook XT, Williamson Surface Pro and Bass Pro Shops Offshore Angler Pencil Popper. The common theme among these lures is they are built strong for heavy duty saltwater use. Well actually there’s one exception. Sorry Bass Pro, but I have to admit the Offshore Angler Pencil Popper comes with wimpy hooks. You need to replace the rear hook with something beefy, like a 2/0 Daiichi 7x D98Q treble hook. I remove the front treble hook from all these lures. If I am fishing strictly for bluefish, jacks, ladyfish, mackerel and other such fish, I use a lure with just the rear treble. This makes it easier to unhook fish because the body of the lure makes a convenient handle to control a flopping fish. If I want a shot at catching the blacktip and spinner sharks that have a fondness for big topwaters (and I usually do) I put a big single hook like a Trokar TK8R-8/0 or 6/0 VMC ILS on the front hook hanger. On some of my plugs I’ll drill a ¼ inch hole near the head of the lure which allows the lure body to fill up with water. This provides extra heft for casting distance or for punching into a headwind and allows the lure to track better in rough surf. One lure that I’ve started using lately that I really like is the 1.5 ounce Frigg Popper from Odin Lure Company. The Frigg has a cavity in the front of the lure that Odin calls a Bait Well. You can squirt a thick, gel like fish attractant
After topwater, I probably throw spoon the most. If the surf gets too rough for topwater, I’ll throw slab style spoons, two to four inches long like the Hopkins, Crippled Herring and Kastmaster. These things are nearly indestructible, cast a mile, and track well in the roughest surf. Also, most days I keep a light spinning rod handy rigged with a quarter ounce spoon so that I am ready to cast should a Spanish mackerel feeding frenzy erupt.
Subsurface Plugs As much as I hate to admit it, there are days when the fish are there, but the topwater bite shuts down after the sun gets high. A good way to keep the bite going is to switch to a subsurface plug. I like plugs like the Yo-Zuri Mag Darter, Daiwa Salt Pro Minnow Bullet and Rapala X-Rap Long Cast Shallow. The common theme among these lures is they don’t run deep. I don’t want a lure that plows the bottom. I should also note, when tarpon are in the surf I switch to a subsurface plug because they seem to prefer something that swims just under the surface.
Jigs When I want to target redfish, snook and other gamefish in the first trough off the beach, I like to use a jig, something like a three inch D.O.A. C.A.L. Shad Tail threaded onto a ¼ or 3/8 ounce jig head. I’ll bounce the jig along the bottom if it is sandy, and work it a little faster to keep it out of the snags if fishing around rocks. I
have to offer some caution though. If there are a lot of bluefish around you’ll probably not want to use jigs as they will quickly tear through your supply of plastic tails.
Bait? Bait fishing is my least favorite way to fish during the mullet run but that doesn’t mean it is not the most effective. A live finger mullet pinned to a 2/0 to 5/0 Daiichi D84Z circle hook on a couple feet of 50-60 pound mono or fluorocarbon leader with a sinker just heavy of enough to hold bottom will get you plenty of action. Up to a 9/0 to 10/0 Daiichi D72Z circle hook on an 80 pound leader if you want to try free lining a full size mullet for tarpon. Use the same circle hooks with #9 single strand stainless steel wire leader if you want to soak big chunks of freshly caught bluefish, jack or ladyfish for sharks.
Tackle Most of my mullet run fishing is done with 6000 to 7000 sized spinning reels loaded with 30 pound test Platypus Platinum Braid and mounted to nine foot surf rods like the Okuma Cedros CSX-S-902MH. For throwing smaller spoons for mackerel and tossing jigs or finger mullet into the first trough, I use a 4000 spinning reel with 20 pound braid on a seven foot medium fast action rod like the Cadence CR5-701SMF. I add a few feet of 50-60 pound mono or fluorocarbon leader for lure fishing and will add a couple feet of #9 wire if I want to target sharks. Like I said at the beginning of this article, these are just the techniques I use. The great thing about the mullet run is gamefish are abundant and aggressive. et’s talk October fishing; my favorite month to fish on Florida’s east coast. Why? Because, late September begins the cool down process and signifies the start the fall mullet run. October is full bore fall season with all of the perks this season offers. Cooler air and water temperatures, migrating mullet and hungry fish are why I love October! I have a particular statement I use when giving seminars on the topic. “If there’s any justice in this fisherman’s life, I’ll be reincarnated as a mullet”! Obviously I’m joking and have no desire to become one of the most critical components of our inshore and nearshore ecosystems. However, this is my way of expressing the importance of the lowly mullet in our quest to catch that next trophy. The list of gamefish targeting mullet during the migration is extensive. Snook, redfish, tarpon and trout are obvious predators in our inshore arena. Less obvious are black drum, sharks, jack crevalle, ladyfish and more. Move to the inshore and this list grows by leaps and bounds! Whether you, the angler, decide to use a live mullet a dead mullet and possibly cut up mullet or a lure designed to imitate one be assured now is the time to do so. The “run” typically lasts through fall and maybe into early winter, though this time frame is completely subject to
weather conditions. For a soft plastic lure that imitates an immature silver mullet I tend to go with Z-man’s Minnowz (three inch), Diezel Minnowz (four inch) and Grass Kickerz (five inch) and rig them weedless using their EZ Keeperz hooks. Select an appropriately weighted hook to allow the retrieve you desire. I find one-eighth and three-sixteenth ounce weights to be most useful. Top-water plugs offering a walking action like Tsunami’s K9 Walker are great choices when surface conditions are calm or lightly rippled. Switch to poppers/ chuggers when the water becomes choppy and my favorite is the soft plastic Pop Shadz rigged on a very lightly weighted bass-worm type of hook. Because this lure is NOT hard the fish eating it tend to hold on longer giving the angler a little more leeway in setting the hook! Don’t forget the hard plastic jerk baits like the Mirrolure plugs. Their 52m series has been a fish catcher for decades!

Snook are in season. These fish will be feeding aggressively this month along the beaches outside of Port Canaveral.
S
nook, tarpon, shark, redfish and more are blowing up on the school of migrating mullet along the surf zones. These baitfish are working their way south for the winter and they are running the gauntlet through this maze of predators to get there. Rapala X-Rap lures in the 10, 12, and 14 sizes can be very effective on most of these species early and late in the day. Through the middle of the day anglers can use live pogies or mullet on a VMC 7385 coastal black circle hook to get many of these fish to strike. Mangrove Snapper, flounder, Jack ladyfish and
bluefish will be other species you can expect when the mullet run gets going strong. Anglers can add a little weight to these baitfish to get them below the rest of the school, and you should get a bent rod in no time. Capt. edfish, trout, and some small snook are following fingerling mullet along the residential docks and mangrove covered shorelines south of the 520 Causeway. The water in this area still looks horrible in most places, so sight fishing isn’t going to be an option on most days. Despite the ugly water color there are fish to be caught here. The previously mentioned schools of mullet are generally the key to finding them. Where the mullet are schooled up, these predators won’t be far behind. Soft plastic jigs or jerk baits that imitate the mullet should get all three species to bite during morning or evening periods. One of the better
colors to use lately has been the gold pepper shiner color Saltwater Assassin. This is a 5-inch jerk bait that can be rigged weedless on a worm hook and worked at or just below the surface of the water to imitate a fingerling mullet. Rapala Twichin’ Mullet or Subwalk plugs are two other good options to fish around the edges of these mullet pods. Black drum and mangrove snapper are possible around the area bridge pilings from the Eau Gallie Causeway to the 528 Causeway. Capt. appy Halloween! What a great month we had once again in the beautiful waters of Florida’s Atlantic. Bunker have been cooperating more every day as are the mullet. Don’t just try going south for the bait as they are being found in the Canaveral Bight more each day. Take those baits offshore to the reef and slow troll for some good kingfish action. Mixed in with the kings have been a bunch of bonito and cobia. Just stick to your normal stinger rigs and slow troll those and slow speeds of 1or 2 knots at most. If you don’t have any luck, frozen
minnows are working as well. But definitely use some of those busters supplied by the Fish and Dive center in Cocoa Beach. Get with Nick. He knows what’s going on. Bottom fishing should only start to improve. It has been tough catching croakers lately. Try the bouy line and try a few of the drop offs. Typically, this time of year we should start seeing the cobia and blackfin tuna showing up. See if you can’t get around the shrimp boats during the day while they are anchored up. It has been pretty good! For the nearshore fishing, follow the schools of mullet,
Tarpon and snook have been great. They jetties have been holding fish daily. Flourocarbon is a great bonus with this type of fishing. Spanish macs have been schooling the mullet schools too. Small jigs and topwter poppers work great with this type of fishing. Good luck.

SEBASTIAN INLET TO EAU GALLIE

ctober is one of my favorite months to fish the Sebastian area inshore and nearshore. I also like to fish the Creeks and flats from Sebastian to Melbourne for Snook and Tarpon. As long as the hurricanes stay away and don’t interrupt the mullet run like Matthew and Irma did the last two years, we should have a great month of fishing. If the weather holds up and it isn’t too rough, the beaches are the place to be. Consistent action on Tarpon, Snook, Sharks, Jack Crevalle and Kingfish that are following the schools of bait looking for that easy meal. Fish the Snook and Jacks by fishing the trough running parallel to the shore along the beach. Fishing for Tarpon and sharks, the best bet is to use live bait and fish the outer edges of the
bait pods. The Rapala XRap Long Cast in size 14 will be an excellent hard bait to use when targeting the bait pods. I also like to use Hogy Eeels or Pro Tail Paddle tail baits and Storm 360 GT 5” jerkbaits around the bait pods during the mullet run along the beaches. The mullet in the Creeks from Melbourne down to Sebastian will keep the Tarpon, Snook and Jacks in there through the month as long as we don’t get too much rain. Fish the docks and oyster that are loaded with bait using topwater baits early switching to subsurface baits later in the day. Snook will be plentiful and Tarpon will be in the deeper channels of the creeks. Live finger mullet is a great bait or if using artificial baits, I like to try the Storm 360 Coastal Shrimp or
paddletail baits on a ¼ or 3/8 ounce jighead depending on the depth of the water a shot along the shoreline drop-offs. The inshore topwater bite on the flats and along the mangrove shorelines will be great and there are plenty of areas to catch Snook, Redfish Trout and Flounder. When the topwater bite slows, switch to subsurface baits. The Rapala Twitchin mullet and twitchin minnow have been excellent baits inshore during the mullet run. If you like soft plastics, a 4” jerkbait in mullet color should do the trick. If the mullet run is up to par, anglers should be able to catch plenty of Flounder in the 2 to 6 pound range in the lagoon and near the inlets. I like to fish the mangrove shorelines with Storm 360 Coastal jerkbaits
and paddle tail baits with Pro Cure bait scent or DOA Cal jigs or 4” jerkbaits rigged on VMC ¼ ounce jigheads. Fish them slow along the shorelines and pitching them under the mangrove roots. Capt. Beach through Indialantic hold predators in wait. Of course a live mullet will get hit and they are best rigged on a fishfinder rig with the appropriate weight to hold bottom. But my favorite way to fish the run is with Large Top water plugs or large floating lipped/diver plugs (same color choices as the lagoon section) windcheeters fished on higher tides. This is true pot luck fishing that could have you hooked to a snook or redfish on one cast, then a 100lb. tarpon or 6ft. shark on the next. As with the beaches our lagoons will be host to the mass transient schools of mullet but many will find their wintering spots and stay. Look at it like this; Carolina mullet find our winter waters comfortable and warm, but our mullet might spend Christmas in the Keys. Everything must shift south! Points, dock lines, and edges of flats will all act as ambush points for reds, trout, snook and some tarpon. Pot holes on open flats will also be utilized on occasions when the bait is more spread out. Of course a live free-
lined mullet will work great, but for those that don’t want to mess with all that bait plugs work great. The low light times will have any top water lure of your choice getting smacked around, but cooler temps account for some good all day fishing utilizing 1/8oz.weedless keeper style hook accompanied with a Slayer Inc. SST. With so much bait present I stick with the two basic color choices of natural vs. bright and bold. If natural is getting lost and not hit go to white, or vice versa. These predators have their choice of snacks and sometimes they call for crazy different, but other times they want something that looks the same but acts injured, slower, or easy to eat.

ello there and welcome to this month's edition of Brevard's Coastal Angler Pro Tip. My name is Capt. Jonathan Moss, and this month, I want to share a recent incident I witnessed at the boat ramp. Public boat ramps are the place to go to capture the next viral video, a cheap laugh or maybe even a place to learn what not to do. There are numerous successful online publications specifically focusing on the disasters that take place at the boat ramp. That is because these incidents happen all the time. Recently, I witnessed an event that I will not soon forget. I was sitting in my truck, next in line to put my trailer in the water. I watched as a family attempted to launch their boat. Mom was on the dock with their daughter watching Dad prepare to launch the boat, while their son was sitting patiently in the boat. All seemed normal. Dad hops in the truck to launch and thus begins the disaster. Prior to hopping in the truck, the gentleman unhooked his trailer lights. No big deal, except the trailer has electric brakes. In some cases, like this
scenario, the electric trailer brakes are powered through the light plug. When the brakes are applied in the vehicle, a charge is sent to the lights to turn on and to the trailer brakes to engage. Therefore, with the lights unplugged, the trailer brakes were in a locked position, and the gentleman could not back the boat up. Again, no big deal, simply plug in the lights and off we go. Oh, how I wish that was the case that morning. Unfortunately, when the gentleman got out of the truck to plug the lights back in, he left the truck in reverse. With the trailer brakes engaged, the truck did not move until the lights were plugged back in. When the light plug was back in place, the electric brakes now received power. Since the brakes on the vehicle were not in engaged, the signal was sent to the trailer brakes to disengage, and truck started moving backwards. The gentleman quickly scrambled and attempted to stop the rolling truck by pushing against it, but he of course was unable to do so. As I watched the chaos ensue, I leaped out of my truck,
ran over, jumped in the moving truck and slammed on the brakes. Unfortunately, I was about one second too late, as the boat had jack knifed and slammed into the side of the truck. BOATS AND TRUCKS ARE MATERIAL THINGS. That was an expensive morning for this family. Both the boat and the truck were damaged. Those things are fixable and easily replaced. I felt sorry for the family and the situation in which they found themselves. This incident should teach us a few things about launching our boats: 1. No matter your experience level, slow down, take your time, use a checklist and be safe. No matter how many times we do something, when we rush, we tend to make mistakes. Taking an extra 30 seconds to stop, process and review could save you a from a bad experience. If someone else is in a hurry and being rude, it is okay to ignore them and focus on what you are doing in order to launch safely. 2. PRACTICE. If you are anything like me, to master a
skill, you must practice. Practice launching and trailering your boat. Take a day off in the middle of the week, go to the local ramp and practice. You will improve at launching and trailering and gain more confidence in your skill. Launching a boat is a skill that must be practiced, and Saturday mornings are not the time to do so. 3. Help each other out! In scary or not so fun situations, we need to remember that we are all humans, and should lend a helping hand to those around us in need. Please, do not be the jerk at the ramp who is in a hurry and creating a stressful situation. From my experience, staring and yelling does not encourage others to move faster or efficiently. Let us all be kind and respectful on and off the water!

ight years ago, Jeff Kolodzinki spent 24 grueling hours on the dock of a Minnesota pond to break the Guinness World Record for Most Fish Caught in a Day. With a 10-foot pole simply rigged with a float, fluorocarbon line and a barbless hook holding live bait, he yanked 2,649 fish from the water in a single day. Dubbed the Marathon Man, Kolodzinki will attempt to break his own world record on Sept. 11-12, 2018 at Giant Goose Ranch in Canton, Ill. Kolodzinski already has his spot in the record books. This time he’s doing it to introduce people and families to fishing and to increase awareness and financial support for the Fishing For Life, a non-profit, tax exempt charitable organization whose Next GEN program finds mentors for children of families in need. A special focus within the program serves families of veterans who have lost loved ones while serving our nation. Not only is Kolodzinski the current world record holder for fish caught in a 24-hour period, but he also represented the United States seven times in international competition at the World Championship of Freshwater Fishing. He currently serves as the Fishing Brand Manager for Johnson Outdoors and is a longtime fishing industry professional with many awards.

on Palm Beach’s Wrecks

elow the ocean’s surface rest giants, the wooden and steel beauties that once demanded the sea’s attention. Lying there quietly, patiently suspended under the weight of water, what secrets do they hold? What lost memories are kept in their walls at the bottom of the sea? There is a calming silence as a diver approaches these giants. In the middle of a sandy desert, a diver approaches a dark shadow. As the current pushes them closer, the shadow grows and the shape of a bow or stern emerges. Then the sheer size of the sunken vessel towers overhead. It is dark and mysterious, yet full of life... and forgotten memories. Many wrecks off the coast of Palm Beach were sunk in the 1960s and now sport coats of sponges and coral growth, surrounded by underwater life. One in particular, the Mizpah, is a popular wreck to dive. Once a private Greek luxury liner, she was commissioned by the U.S. government for service in WWII, her rails outfitted with guns to patrol the coast for German U-Boats. After decommission, she sat in a storage yard for some time before being re-discovered. Her original family could not bear to see her wither on land, so they cleaned her up and gave her a burial at sea. I had the honor last August to dive with a granddaughter of the family who purchased the Mizpah and made an artificial reef out of her. My dive buddy showed me photos of the vessel in her prime and shared stories of childhood on the boat. It was an incredible experience to watch her eyes light up when she first saw the Mizpah underwater... how it had become a beautiful habitat. Seeing her excitement and, post-dive, her quiet reverence, made me realize there are secrets and lost memories in the walls of these sunken vessels and that these forgotten walls now have new purpose and life. Once at the bottom of the sea, these sunken giants attract life quicker than you might expect. In Palm Beach, from mid-August through October, wrecks are surrounded by Goliath groupers. Their favorite places to aggregate for spawning is around wrecks.

Dive operators have created The Palm Beach County Diving Association (PBCDA) to give divers and dive operators a bigger voice in local ocean-related issues, and to aid in the sinking of other ships as part of an active artificial reef program. On Oct. 6, the PBCDA is hosting its annual Artificial Reef Fundraiser at the Loggerhead Marinelife Center in Juno Beach. All proceeds go to the creation of artificial reefs in Palm Beach County. ith a little math from this old engineer and some hungry central Florida permit, dinner was M’m, M’m good! Capt John Milroy, Scott Davis and I headed out the St. Lucie Inlet recently targeting permit and cobia on my 24’ Ranger “R KA NU.” As we headed north along the beach, greenies were everywhere. In about 10 minutes, we added 30 to go along with the 10 small crabs from Fish Heads Bait & Tackle. We ran north, waking up a few large turtles, but no cobia. North of the Martin/St. Lucie county line, we started drifting close to the beach. It was time for a math lesson. Light fishing gear + crab on the bottom = permit. Heavy spinning reel + greenies = cobia. After releasing a small permit, margates and several spinner sharks, including one six-footer, we got serious with our math. The permit hit hard, with four runs to the bottom of the Penn reel. Capt. John ran in circles as the permit circled us eight times. After a long fight, I brought a 30-pound permit alongside. Scott waited nervously with an 18-inch-wide net, knowing if he blew this opportunity he would never live it down. After some fist bumps and another spinner shark, we headed home in a 1- to 2-foot swell at 11:30 a.m. We never found cobia, but the one bruiser permit was enough to complete the equation.

wordfishing is more of a south Florida thing. But on good-weather days when they’re not chasing tuna or wahoo, there’s a group of Melbourne fishermen who gear up with big Lindgren Pitman 1200 electric reels and make a 40mile run out of Sebastian Inlet to the middle of the Gulf Stream. They drop foot-long strip baits rigged with bonito, dolphin or wahoo bellies into the darkness of 1,500 feet. With 10 pounds of lead and lights staggered up 65-pound braid, they wait… sometimes all day for a swordfish to bite. Saturday, Aug. 18 was one of those days. Capt. Roger Montz pointed his 36’ Yellowfin offshore with a plan to take advantage of this year’s Atlantic red snapper season before heading to deep water in search of swordfish. On board were Logan, Montz’s 16-year-old son who works at Strike Zone Fishing in Melbourne; Matt Fowler, who also works at Strike Zone; and Ron Yampolsky, of Corey’s Bagels in Melbourne. “It was a zoo,” said Yampolsky of the red snapper scramble. “Every spot had like 10 to 20 boats on it.” In short order, the anglers picked up their limit of red snapper, four fish that weighed about 10-pounds each, and they headed out for the deep drop. In the Gulf Stream, Logan manned the reels all day long. With two baits out, the high-schooler hooked landed his first-ever swordfish, an 85-pounder that Yampolsky called “perfect eating size.” And the boat picked up another not-so-widely-known species for the supper table, an Atlantic pomfret (brama brama). Pomfret live in depths down to more than 3,000 feet in the Atlantic, Indian and Pacific oceans. “It’s bycatch, but it’s actually better eating than the swordfish,” Yampolsky said. “The meat is like a huge, giant piece of pompano. It’s really better than pomano. It’s white meat, and it’s got a texture similar to swordfish, but it’s less fishy.” Yampolsky said they catch a few pomfret while deep dropping for swordfish and would probably catch more by sizing down to target them. This was the biggest one Yampolsky has seen. He estimated its weight at 30 pounds.

and-based shark fishing (LBSF) has been enjoyed by anglers along the coastlines of Florida for many decades with limited spotlight, public concern, or ecological evaluation. While events such as deceased large hammerhead and tiger sharks appearing on several beaches in 2017 catalyzed a deeper examination of this type of fishing, greater exposure due to social media and a growing popularity of LBSF has also driven the need for a review by the Florida Wildlife Commission (FWC). This summer the FWC established 10 workshops around the state during the months of July and August for discussion and feedback on ideas for proposed policy and guideline implementation for LBSF. These forums were open to the public. I attended the FWC Workshop in Melbourne, Fla. on Aug. 27. I was not surprised that there was a full room, mostly of concerned citizens, including several local mayors as well as a few activists. Notably, the concern was mostly about public safety regarding this type of fishing from citizens, while activists pushed shark welfare. Anglers comprised a vocal 20 or so percent of the room. As Bob Dylan sang, “the times, they are a-changing.” As anglers, we are faced with issues and dilemmas our previous generations did not have. Global fisheries are under attack, while coastal fisheries are under increasing regulation. In Florida, coastal fisheries have shown tremendous progress with recovery of shark populations, as noted by the FWC in the meeting. The fear at hand by anglers is penalizing the LBSF community. These anglers, who pride themselves on a catch and release mentality, range from recreational fishermen to professional land-based charter guides. For some, this type of fishing provides a means for a way of life, while for others it’s a challenging sport unlike any other. A strong debate is embracing the positive, such as using LBSF as an opportunity for data collection and scientific research. For example, NOAA provides free tagging kits for any angler interested in tagging sharks prior to release as well as reporting tags on caught sharks. During the workshop, the FWC presented a number of topics for discussion and feedback, all of which can be found on their website in a downloadable presentation. The highlights included: 1. Special Permits for LBSF – There was overwhelming support of this by all parties (this would include education requirement with limited to no cost for the permit). 2. Restricting time/locations for LBSF – nighttime hours only and/or restrictions from certain public beaches. 3. Expanded Rules for Prohibited Species – prohibiting shorebased tournaments for certain species, restrictions on handling (keep in water), and use of specific gear to maximize survival of released sharks. While the above are merely preliminary recommendations and an outright ban on land-based shark fishing does not appear to be imminent, further data-driven research would lead to true long-term solutions for protecting sharks, supporting anglers, and informing the general public with policies that work for everyone. We shall await the decisions of the commission in December.

P
oling mangrove edges and flats in search of tailing and belly crawling reds is as much hunting as it is fishing. When the target is sighted and it’s time to take a shot with an 8-weight fly rod, your aim better be on target. Gillz pro staffer Noah Miller, of Melbourne, Fla., has spent the on-the-water hours it takes to consistently take reds on the fly. He’s one of those anglers who knows there are still plenty of fish in the famous inshore waters around Titusville. The Indian River, Banana River and Mosquito Lagoon might be facing water quality challenges, but the fishing remains good. Right now, during the fall mullet run and lasting into February is prime time on Florida’s east coast.
“There’s lots of forage, and the fish are happy,” Miller said of current conditions. “They’re very opportunistic this time of year and will eat almost any fly, as long as it is presented correctly.” The redfish display a lot of schooling activity in preparation for a late fall spawn. These fish are resident to their respective waters and remain there through the seasons, even during the spawn. They can be encountered in large schools of 100 fish or more, and finding them is the key to catching them. “Put in the time on the pushpole,” Miller coached. “These fish do move, but they might only be 200 yards away from where they were yesterday. If things look right and you think there should be fish around, don’t leave an area until you’re certain they’re not there.” If the fish are not visible, it is tough to catch them on a fly. With conventional gear, an angler can make long searching casts to cover water for fish that are not showing themselves. With a fly rod, you’re better off holding the fly on the deck until you spot a fish. Seeing the fish and which way it is headed allows for presentation of the fly. You want it to plop down in front of the fish and close, but not too close. “About 40 feet is the cast I like to make,” said Miller. “You’ll be able to tell if he’s seen it and is interested right away… as soon as the fly hits the water. Then you want to start stripping it away from the fish to make it look like a fleeing crab, shrimp or whatever fly you’re fishing.” Miller caught the redfish on the cover of this month’s editions of Coastal Angler Magazine in stained water with a Seaducer pattern that had purple and black hackle feathers for a tail, a black EP Fiber head and bead chain eyes. ontauk, NY. It’s known locally as “The End,” and it’s marketed as “The Fishing Capital of the World!” It can back up both claims. “This is an awesome place for fly- and light-tackle fall thrills says charter skipper Paul Dixon of To the Point Charters (516-314-1185; www.flyfishingmontauk.com). “During October, the inshore action with speedy false albacore, stripers and monster bluefish absolutely sizzles.” Dixon has been fishing Montauk waters for 25 years, loading customers aboard his Contender Tournament 25 and working anywhere from the shadow of Montauk’s iconic lighthouse at the tip of the South Fork to Orient Point at the eastern terminus of Long Island’s North Fork. In the winter months, he charters out of Key Largo to fish the Everglades and Florida Keys. “It’s in the rips and coves at Montauk that the fall mayhem really

comes together,” said Dixon, who loves targeting albies with fly rod in hand. Through September, you’ll find pods of Fat Alberts scattered across Long Island’s East End, but once the rainbait exits the bays, Montauk explodes with fish.” According to Dixon, at the height of the run so many bay anchovies stack up in the rips surrounding Montauk Point that the water actually appears brown with the immense schools. “At that point,” said the skipper, “the albies feed in two ways. They’ll cruise through the densest baitfish schools in tight packs, turning on their sides with their mouths open and simply strain anchovies as they move along. They are tough to hook under those conditions since they aren’t singling out specific targets. Wait a little while though, and they’ll begin to bust up the baitfish schools. That’s when the fishing absolutely breaks loose and every cast has the potential to connect.” While light-tackle fans can hook-up using small tins like a Deadly Dick or a white 1-oz. Panther Martin Big Fin swimbait, Dixon prefers the long wand when sea conditions allow. “These fish hit hard and run fast, so go with the best fly fishing gear you can afford,” he suggested. “I use Cortland Compact floating/intermediate lines, Rise fly rods and Tibor reels. For patterns, 2- to 3-inch Epoxy Minnows get the job done most of the time.” Dixon pointed out that it’s important to know exactly what you are casting for each time you let your line fly. “The albies will be slicing right through the baitfish schools, and it’s important to lead them by several feet,” he said. “The bass, meanwhile, stick close together and plow through the schools like they are mowing a lawn. For these, bring your fly right across the front of the pack. Either way, stay in the bait with each cast. O
ne of the best parts of summer ending is the beginning of fall fishing and FROGS! I love to fish topwater frogs over grass, and this time of year is prime time. I live about 45 minutes from Lake Guntersville in Alabama, and there’s no place better, or more famous, for frog fishing than Guntersville. In the parking lot this time of year, there’s no telling how many different states you will see license plates from. I’ve fished all over this country and Guntersville definitely doesn’t have a monopoly on the frog bite. It has more matted grass than other TVA lakes, but fisheries up north have loads of grass too. And the bass up north seem to be more eager to bite. I think it’s because they aren’t targeted as heavily as they are down here. If I had the opportunity to take someone out and try to get them fired up about bass fishing, I think fishing a frog over matted vegetation would be my choice. If that person’s heart rate didn’t spike when a big bass blew up through the mat on their frog, then they would be better off doing something else. And then once they’ve seen a blow-up, the excitement level for the next one is all the higher. I get a huge smile on my face every time I see it happen no matter how many thousands of times it has happened. Just watching a fish blow up on a frog is exciting, but you also need to get him in the boat for that all-important photo op or weigh-in stage. For that you must have the right

gear. If you throw a hollow frog like the one in this photo over matted grass and he bites, you probably won’t get him in using monofilament line and a rod and reel from the department store.
