t’s snook season in Florida, and despite a closure to harvest for much of the state’s west coast, the next couple months offer great action in the world’s best location to target the state’s most iconic inshore/ nearshore gamefish. Snook strike aggressively, fight hard and grow large—into the 20and 30-pound range of true slob snook. The Florida state record weighed 45.75 pounds. It was caught by Heather Lynn Conners near Sebastian in 2015. But even the slot fish—those in the 28- to 33-inch range you’re allowed to keep one of—will test your gear. It’s one of the most explosive and exciting gamefish on the planet. Snook are extremely temperature sensitive, and tactics vary according to the season. From the beaches and nearshore, where they spend their summers, they will move over the next few months seeking warmer water in sheltered winter haunts. First, you’ll find them in deep water adjacent to the shallow flats. Then, driven by cooling sea temps, they’ll push all the way up into the creeks and rivers, residential canals, warm water discharge from power plants, upper estuaries, and anywhere they can find suitable water conditions. The harsher the winter, the more pronounced the move. Fall through winter is the time when big, line-snapping snook will hunker down in areas that might seem highly unlikely to the uninformed. With the mild winters of the last decade, much has been made of the northward spread of snook. A tropical species, they historically thrived only on the southern coasts of Florida, up to about to about Sebastian in the Atlantic and Tampa in the Gulf. However, in recent years, snook have set up shop farther north, in areas that would have been unheard of a decade ago. These days, it’s possible to target snook at Homosassa and farther north along the Nature Coast of the Gulf and up toward Jacksonville in the Atlantic. They have also shown up much farther north. This summer, Coastal Angler Magazine reported on a juvenile snook caught in a cast net way up in Winyah Bay, South Carolina. First timers seeking to do battle with snook should hire a captain. Along with being big and strong, large female snook are notoriously smart and usually require specialized tackle, techniques and a good deal of patience. Their tendency to hole up in the structure of mangroves, rocks and bridge and pier pilings makes break-offs common, and the expertise of a good guide increases your chances of actually landing one. The good news is, snook have been relatively unmolested by anglers during the closed season of the last three months. Now is as good a time as any to fool a big cow nosed into the current under some residential canal dock. They feed best in low light of the early mornings and late evenings when there’s a rising or falling tide. The stronger tides around the new and full moons are optimal for catching them. Keep that in mind when booking your trip to Florida’s snook fisheries, and you could find yourself experiencing the fishing trip of a lifetime.

so therefore they are going to be moving out of the Cape soon and going down south following the 55-60 degree water.

he summer is almost over and there is still a chance to catch some big fish before they all leave. Stripers are a migratory fish

If you want a chance of catching a keeper Striper this late in the season you are going to have to find the water that is in that range they like. Therefore you have many options of where you can fish for them. Some great spots are places like Cape Cod Bay and the Cape Cod Bay side of the canal where the water is colder and where the fish are going to be more active because they are going to be following the mackerel. Some lures that you should be using are big white soft plastics and white or mackerel colored top water baits, like poppers or big Zara spooks. What you want to be looking

for is big birds and fish blowing up under them on mackerel. You also want to more aware that the smaller fish might be under the birds eating small pogies and the bigger fish might be out of the pod eating mackerel. So keep your mind open to not just around the birds.

Well I hope these few tips help you catch some big fish before they leave and the summer is over.

Also try to be out really early in the morning at like sunrise so that the fish are more active or late at night at like sunset. Another good way to catch these fish if you can’t get them to bite is by using live mackerel and live lining them on the bottom so that big fish on the bottom don’t have to work as much for their food because they are lazy and want to move as little as possible.

EDITORIAL Anxiety Warrior by Brian Beneduce

Brian Beneduce is a millionaire businessman from Chatham, Massachusetts and a boat enthusiast. He has also been living with crippling fear for much of his life. In this exclusive excerpt from his new book Anxiety Warrior: A Scared Man’s Path to Success and Happiness, Beneduce describes how his boat helped him conquer his fear. “When I had enough money, one of the first things I splurged on was a small boat. It was a 22-foot Center Console powerboat and I kept it docked in a scenic harbor on the south coast of Rhode Island. I loved the name that was already on the boat, so I kept it -Dreamcatcher. Buying the Dreamcatcher was a turning point in my life. I was drawn to it, and I viewed it as an opportunity and a tool to help me try to act normal. I tried to project a glamorous image as a true yachtsman without a care in the world. I looked out across the dock past the marina, untied all three lines and started the engine. Slowly, I made my way out of the dock and through the guide buoys. I had been on boats before, so I figured I knew what I should be doing. The water was calm so I kept my idle speed low. I steered with one hand and while waving at other boaters and pleasure seekers with my other. I was relaxed. The Thing (my anxiety) was nowhere in sight. My anxiety level dropped from three, to two, to one. I felt like I had been doing this my entire life. It 6 BOSTON | SEPTEMBER 2019

was natural. I believed I was meant to be here. As I passed through the breakwater at the rocky inlet of the marina, I found myself in Block Island Sound. I looked to my left, then to my right, and could see nothing but dark blue ocean clear to the horizon. The water was no longer as calm as it was in the cove, and two to three foot waves now slapped against the side of the boat, causing it to rock a bit. I then realized I was completely alone. The beast was stirring. My anxiety levels surged upward from a level one to a level five. I started to worry that I had been too cocky back at the dock and that I shouldn't have pretended I knew what I was doing. I probably shouldn't have pretended that I was normal in the first place. Despite the anxiety that was building in my mind, I pushed forward and headed out into open water. I could have turned back, but subconsciously, I was testing myself. I was trying to learn how much I could take. I motored along cautiously for about a mile, then looked back and saw an ominous bank of fog slowly rolling in. I hadn't told anyone I would out here today. I had placed myself in a vulnerable position and the Thing wanted to drown me. “What if the engine quits?” the beast whispered in my ear. “What if you have to swim to shore? Where is the shore? Why wait for the inevitable to happen? Just slip over the side and end it all.” I felt my throat start to close, and my heart began to race.

EDITORIAL I scrambled around the boat on all fours looking for a bag to hyperventilate into. There wasn't anything. I was angry that I didn't think to bring one along. Suddenly I pulled myself up and grabbed the wheel. I would not let the Thing bring me to a level 10. I refused to let it kill me. “The worst is over,” I shouted. “I made it. Now it’s time to find my way home.” I turned the boat around and focused solely on the task at hand. I navigated back toward the marina and could think of nothing except getting beyond the rocky entrance of the break wall and back into safety. As I entered the cove, I tried to convince myself that the water was too rough out there anyway -- turning back had been the right thing to do. I quickly found my slip and re-tied the boat to the dock. Then I went about washing it down as if I had been out on a three-day cruise, smiling and waving to anyone who might walk by, trying to make it look like I was a savvy veteran boater with decades of experience. I was faking it -- just like I did in my car, on the road, and basically everywhere…. I went back out in my boat a few days later. It was early in the morning and my anxiety level was at seven even before I even set foot on the dock. I had been obsessing about the trip all night. The weather was warm, the sun was shining and the wind was dead calm. It was better conditions than anyone could hope to ask for. The night before, I bragged to everyone about how great my day on the water was going to be and about how I couldn't wait to get out there. Yet deep down, I was praying that it would rain and give me yet another lame excuse to have to stay home.

boat. All my senses were heightened. I had a radio onboard, but I knew it would take the Coast Guard at least an hour to find me and by then I would have either hyperventilated to death or would have pounded my head into the hull of the boat until I was a bloody, dead mess. That’s what the Thing wanted me to do. I gripped the wheel until my knuckles were white, as the beast attempted to pull me away and over the side of my boat. “Peace of mind,” I muttered to myself. “You control the beast. This monster doesn’t control you.” I could feel the Thing wrapping itself around my body and once again, my throat began to close. At that moment, I looked off to the golden horizon as a seagull soared over head. I breathed deeply as the rush of salt air filled my lungs. I felt safe. At that moment, I didn’t know if I was alive or dead. I had given myself completely to the beast, and yet I felt exhilarated and free. “No matter what happens from now on, at least you’ll have this one true moment of inner peace,” I said aloud. “You’ve pushed yourself to a near level 10 and you’re okay.” In fact, I had found clarity.

My heart was pounding at two hundred beats per minute, yet I kept pushing myself and took the boat deeper and deeper out into the calm, majestic waters of Block Island Sound. I had decided that on this voyage, I would test myself and take myself to the very edge, and accepted that this time, I might not be able to return. I took a deep breath and looked down at the ignition key. I was about to cut the engine, inducing my panic in an attempt to lure the beast out of its cave. The engine was humming in a soothing rhythm. How could I do this? What's the worst that could happen? What if I can't restart the boat? What if the motor just turns over and over and over again? “Take the hits,” I told myself. “Absorb and endure the pain and fear.” It was time to find out if I could break the sound barrier of fear and explore that point of no return. I turned the key and the engine went silent. I could hear nothing. In the distance, I could see one fishing boat probably twenty miles away and it was unlikely he could see me at all. I remember admiring the fisherman's resolve, and feeling jealous that he could go out anywhere he wanted -- no bad thoughts, no fears, no worries, no "what ifs" -- just go. I breathed in the smell of the sea and the oily exhaust from the

Maine's native and wild trout lakes, ponds, and flowing waters represent a unique and abundant resource not available elsewhere in the United States. The Moose is the largest of the dear family and can be spotted while flying in because of the vast aerial view and remote location, they can be found feeding on that remote lakes or ponds. Moose like cool summers as only a boreal forest can provide. To see The Maine Highlands from the air is to truly appreciate how grand and spectacular this frontier really is. Maine is home to over 2500 ponds and lakes, the largest which is Moosehead Lake with over 116 square miles. Flora and fauna represent a combination of subarctic and Appalachian species. Forests include softwood stands of pine, spruce, and fir. Beech, sugar maple, yellow birch, aspen, paper birch is just some of the stands of hardwoods. Among the fauna are animals such as pine martin, deer, moose, black bear, fox, lynx, hare, raccoon, coyote, porcupine, fisher, and bobcats. Mt Katahdin is Maine’s tallest mountain which peaks at 5,268 ft. Its top summit is a start or end to the Appalachian trail which runs between Mt. Katahdin and Springer Mt. in Georgia. The trail is the largest hiking only trail in the world at 2,200 miles long. These facts are truly impressive but does not compare to the personal experience of visiting for yourself. Maine should be on everyone’s bucket list to do especially for the adventurer or naturalist at heart.

Bringing The Dead (Bait) Back To life

n case you don’t already know and do this, here’s a trick that can save a day in the absence of live bait. If you’re going bottom fishing and pinfish, sardines, pogies or the others are hard to find with a cast net or sabiki, hedge your bets by keeping a couple dozen fresh or frozen baits about the diameter of a softball, or larger, in the cooler. Even in freshwater, when live gizzard shad or skipjacks are nowhere to be found, a box of frozen baits can still entice catfish, striped bass and others. Dropping a whole dead bait down will get bites, but if you take a minute to “butterfly” them, these once dead baitfish come back to life in the current. No grouper or big snapper can resist them when presented properly. Grunts pinkies and seabass will hammer at it, and eventually get the hook, but grouper or anything else with a large enough mouth will simply inhale it. I’ve seen times when the bite would shut down, even with live bait, and a fresh butterflied beeliner (vermillion snapper) would get bit instantly. The two fillets of any given baitfish attached to the head, without the backbone and dorsal fins are just a little too much to resist for the big meat-eaters. Granted, it’s also big shark candy, but as Popeye would say, “You pays your money, you takes your chances.” Butterflying a bait is very simple. Anyone can go out and catch a pile of grunts, pinkies and seabass with small cut bait, but it’s no coincidence that the people who specifically go fishing for grouper are the ones that come home with the “brown fish” in the box. Don’t hesitate to butterfly a snapper or anything else you thought was once too large for bait. On the bottom, the smaller fish will hammer away at the two larger fillets, and out of nowhere a big gag

or red grouper will finish it off. A 1 ½-pound beeliner, pinkie or Spanish mackerel is the perfect candidate for this job. When you feel the little ones banging on it, sit tight and don’t set the hook. Wait for the big bite; there will be no question when it gets eaten instead of pecked at. Big butterflied mullet, spots and croakers are extremely effective inshore and nearshore for red or black drum. In freshwater, a butterflied bream, perch, crappie or other panfish is perfect for big catfish. To butterfly a bait, start at the tail and fillet each side up to just behind the head and out the gut area. Then grab the tail and break the backbone out just behind the head.
