Whatever happened to Sea Cat? By Thatch Maguire
A
bout 20 years ago, I had the opportunity to ride aboard a dual-hull, 21-foot center console called a Sea Cat. Like many others, I’ve been a fan of cats ever since. The ride of a dual-hull vessel, especially in choppy seas, is dramatically different from that of a mono-hull. The stability of a two-hull system creates a cutting effect, as opposed to the bounce associated with the plaining of the mono-hull. Study after study has confirmed this effect affords “cats” substantially better fuel economy as well as a much smoother ride and shallower draft. The “cult” of the dual-hull cat has its origins in Australia, where catamaran-style hulls have long been the choice for Australia’s working fishermen. The consistent chop in their seas requires the stability of a catamaran hull. In the United States, several companies pioneered development of the catamaran-style boats for our waters. In the late 1950s, Ray Leger began producing the Power Cat series on the West Coast and several other companies including Manacat and Ocean Star began producing cats in the East. Years after my ride aboard the Sea Cat, I purchased a 26-foot World Cat. I was told Sea Cat was now World Cat. I visited the North Carolina World Cat factory, where I was told they no longer produced the Sea Cat. Recently, I learned the Sea Cat is still being produced in Greenville, N.C. After a few phone calls, and a little Googling, I found Forrest Munden at Sea Cat Boats. The following interview with Mr. Munden attempts to unravel the mystery of “Whatever happened to Sea Cat?” Q: Mr. Munden, how is it you are today selling a vessel that many thought was no longer on the market? Weren’t you associated with the original Sea Cat I fell in love with? Munden: Yes I was. Sea Cat was originally created by Graham Flanagan in 1992. I was manufacturing Leisure Cat boats with Regal Marine in Orlando, Fla., and Graham was manufacturing Sea Cat boats in Greenville, N.C. The innovations developed on the Sea Cat seemed destined to have substantial influence on the boating industry. The boats were super fuel-efficient and rode smoothly in nearly any conditions.

Q: Well what happened? Munden: In 1996, I purchased Sea Cat boats and its Greenville manufacturing facility. During my first year with the brand, I designed and developed the World Cat line of catamaran boats. World Cat molds were manufactured by Vectorworks Marine in Titusville, Fla. by my good friend Jeff Gray, CEO of Vectorworks. Once we received the new World Cat molds at the plant in Greenville, we started making the World Cat and stopped making the Sea Cat. That was early in 1997. The Sea Cat molds were stored for another year and a half until my good friend Ken Hall (previous CEO of Proline/Donzi) purchased them. He owned the Florida boat company Sportcraft and wanted to add a catamaran line. He called the Sea Cat boat the Sportcat. Unfortunately, Sportcat and Sportcraft did not survive the 1998 economic downturn. The next I heard of Sea Cat was when a former Sea Cat dealer and two brothers from Columbia, S.C. splashed the 19-foot Sea Cat mold. Then, Jerry Semers purchased that mold from the brothers, who had closed their business. Mr. Semers’ started the new venture in Titusville, Fla., utilizing Vector Works Marine as a home base. He called the boat Sea Cat. After Mr. Semers passed away, the molds and tooling sat vacant for years. In 2017, a good friend and ex-Sea Cat and World Cat dealer invited me into a venture to make a new catamaran with the Sea Cat name. I reached out to Mr. Gray at Vectorworks and proceeded to do the tooling and mold building through their team. The result, introduced in 2019, is the new 260 Sea Cat Hybrid bay boat built by our partner Pete Caldwell, Caldwell Marine Designs. The original Seacat Boat built in 1992 was built again 27 years later at the same Greenville plant. Today’s vessel is capable of power up to twin 300 horsepower. Today’s 26-foot Sea Cat has handling characteristics far superior to the original that you fell in love with. EDITORIAL Schoolie Fly Fishing Tips by Stephanie Winter
It’s striper season again which means it’s time for a few fly fishing tips when fishing for New England’s most popular saltwater game fish. Be realistic. The fish you’re catching when fly fishing from shore with a streamer vs. a boat, fish finder and conventional gear set up are drastically different. While you may get lucky with an opportunity at 30+ inch fish, you’ll mostly be dealing with large groups of smaller “schoolies” giving you a chance to catch a lot of fish. If you are dead set on catching a trophy striper, hire a guide to take you to the best spots and set you up for success. Otherwise, be prepared to be at a disadvantage when using a fly fishing rod. Do some research. If you haven’t done your homework, you might spend an entire day fishing a spot without any stripers. Stripers migrate north in the spring seeking water temperatures between 55 and 68 degrees. Take a look at the striper migration map online to ensure they’ve made it to your neck of the woods. If your fishing location is outside of this range, there’s a good chance you won’t see a striper. 6 BOSTON | JUNE 2019

EDITORIAL as bubbly, foamy pockets where baitfish become disoriented and are easy targets. Ensure there are some turbulent pockets in your fishing area. Lastly, look for feeding birds picking baitfish out of the water. The baitfish are vulnerable to these birds because they’re probably being pushed to the surface by predatory fish below. Throw a cast into this baitfish school and you’ll have a good chance of pulling out a decent fish.
Make sure to check the tide chart before you head out fishing. Stripers feed when the current brings food to them. Similar to us, stripers don’t want to go out of their way to find a snack. The best time to fish is when the tide has a good current velocity but not strong enough to make it difficult for stripers to stay in place. Three hours before high tide and three hours after is normally the best current to find feeding stripers. Understand your environment. Go to the spots you want to fish at low tide and check out the structure of the area. You can see striper holding spots such as rocks and sandbars clearly at low tide that might be completely submerged at high tide. Stripers feed in turbulent water such

Maine Fly Fishing Adventures with My Dad By Annarose Yvon
My name is Annarose Yvon and I live Bradford, which is located in the Highlands region of Maine. I live on a small tree farm with my Mom, Dad and my younger sister Amanda. I am truly blessed because it is the perfect place to live when you are a person that loves the outdoors. I have had the pleasure of fishing and hunting in Maine since I was a toddler. My Grandmother was originally from Portage Maine, and my Dad spent much of his childhood fishing and hunting with my great Uncle Rodney in the great north woods. Uncle Rodney is a Master Maine guide and he inspired my dad to become a Maine guide in opening his business, Twin Maple Outdoors. My Dad introduced me to hunting and fishing. Over the years, I have done many types of fishing together. We’ve done open water and ice fishing on lakes, ponds and rivers. We’ve taken our G3 jet boat up the rocky waters of the Penobscot River for Bass fishing. We’ve done dip net fishing for smelts in the springtime and we’ve gone fly fishing as we drifted the rapids of West Branch River of the Penobscot. Each of these trips offers a unique experience and is always a great time spent in the peaceful Maine woods with my Dad. The West Branch of the Penobscot is a 117-mile tributary of the Penobscot River. The West Branch offers a great opportunity for drifting and fly-fishing. The waters of the West Branch are considered to be one of the top fisheries in the United States. The Landlocked Salmon is native to the state of Maine. They are considered the cousin of Atlantic salmon. When Maine was formed by the glacier and under sea water, it was said that deposits of Atlantic salmon were left behind when waters receded. river basins that held the land lock salmon in Maine: The St. Croix, The Union, The Penobscot and the Presumpscot. Our Salmon trip all started out by preparing for our fishing adventure. My dad takes many fishing clients on this very trip so getting ready seamed very routine, but for me, I had to think about what I had to do and bring. We started out by towing our drift boat down many miles of bumpy, dusty, dirt roads. I’d say the trip was an exciting adventure passing by Mount Katahdin and beautiful big Maine north woods. On our arrival we checked into the Big Eddy lodge. Don the care taker was there to greet and welcome us to the camp and river. We unloaded the truck and settled into our campsite. Now the excitement really started when we launched are drift boat into the Big Eddy. Dad and Don had to shuttle the truck and trailer to the takeout spot, as i patiently waited with our drift boat. As we started fishing, Dad gave me instructions on how to nymph fish. After practicing how to properly drift the fly I encountered my first hook up. I was so excited! Dad immediately started coaching me on how to keep the line taut, I can hear him now saying, “Annarose constant pressure! Don’t drop your rod tip!” I then proceeded to fight the salmon and grab the net. I then, leaned to get the fish trying to not go overboard! I was then able to remove the hook and release the beautiful fish unharmed. I didn’t think that I would have ever caught a fish because we did not have any luck as of yet. So, I was very surprised. I was very proud of myself because all my dad did was just stand there with the camera. That is why fishing can be a big surprise!

EDITORIAL about our morning, which made me giggle and smile! Having a full belly, I was ready to continue our special time together not even caring if we caught a fish or not. After drifting for some time and least expecting, I suddenly had a smallmouth bass come up from an undercut at the bank of the river! “Fish on!!” I yelled as Dad brought over the net. My Dad kept saying “Rod tip up, don’t give him any slack!” Dad brought the net underneath the fish, as I was enamored grinning form ear to ear!
As we started fishing, Dad gave me instructions on how to nymph fish. After practicing how to properly drift the fly I encountered my first hook up. I was so excited! I loved the feeling of getting excited and reeling the fish in, but mostly because I love using a fly rod. This fishing is fun for all ages! As I think about this trip, I’m wondering what crazy things will happen next year! Our fly-fishing adventure on the 63-mile bass fly waters of the Penobscot river, is another trip which will resonate into my forever fishing memories of my child hood. My Dad, our dog Belle and I headed out one Saturday morning for some smallmouth bass fly-fishing. My Dad mentioned that this was fly-fishing only trip as we left all spinning gear behind. I remember feeling somewhat nervous about a fly only trip because of my lack of experience on the river with a fly rod.
We ended our day pulling our boat out of the water and stopping in at our local ice cream shop. Special times with my Dad, is what I will always remember and hopefully someday provide my kids the same special memories. I am very grateful to my parents for raising us in the outdoors where I can learn and appreciate the wonders of nature. The morning started out with beautiful weather with no wind. This definitely made me feel more confident on handling a 5 wt., 9 ft. fly rod. As we anchored the boat in the current with our trolling motor, my Dad instructed me to drift my popper against the shoreline. So, I proceeded to cast into the bank where I know big fish live! I proceeded to cast and then into a tree limb my fly found a snag! I looked at Dad with disappointment in my eyes. I remember Dad saying…” That’s ok honey let me help you get that out”. While retrieving the fly with a hook and telescoping handle, Dad brought the branch down to my level and I was able to unhook my fly from the limb. After we resumed our fishing, I watched Dad catch a few bass that really got me excited but made me feel excluded at the same time. Dad noticed I was feeling kind of down, so he made the boat drift the same speed as the current. He said, “This might help you dear with you casting and mending of your line”. He was right! I was able to drift my fly much easier, which I preferred and so did the fish! We stopped fishing mid day because my tummy was rumbling and hurting. We pulled up under a huge red oak tree with plenty of shade. I love country music, so I asked my Dad to put on his speaker. We started listening to music as Dad took out the gas grill and Hamburg’s. “I
f you like a short ride to the offshore grounds but still want plenty of opportunities for big shark, tuna and mahi, New Jersey’s Manasquan Inlet is a great jumping off point,” said Capt. John Williams. He should know. Having run Blue Chip Sportfishing (732-539-7911; http://www.bluechipsportfishing.com) in Point Pleasant Beach for over 30 years, he’s been making the run longer than most. The great equalizer for offshore anglers in this area believes Williams is a big change in water depth that starts just 16 miles offshore. Known as the Mud Hole, it extends from its shallowest point another 30 miles before banking northeast toward Chicken Canyon. Even better, the entire area is littered with wrecks and structure points.
“In some places the Mud Hole is about 1.5 miles across,” noted Williams. “In others, it’s 5 miles wide. At its edge, it runs 95 to 120 feet deep before dropping to 300 feet deep in the middle. Those rapid depth changes cause all sorts of upwellings, eddies and current changes which play havoc with baitfish. The tuna and shark intersect the waters here as they follow the 20-fathom curve north during their migrations.” Shark action starts in May and increases through June. As in most offshore situations, Williams looks for temperature breaks to concentrate the bait but is often cued into action by birds, whales and porpoise. The biggest makos and thresher sharks come through first while the water is still pretty cool, about 65 degrees. “There have seen some interesting changes in our shark fishing of late,” Williams revealed. “The past few years have seen more big threshers in the 300-plus-pound class than big makos. We’ve also seen a lot of southern sharks showing up including spinners and black tips. No matter what kind of sharks we see, we’ll generally drift using mackerel or bunker chum and bluefish or chub mackerel fillets on a 10/0 circle hook. We use a wind on leader and a 4 to 5 wire with a 10/0 circle hook. A Penn 50w and a 50-pound class rod complete the setup” As for tuna, a solid bite of 20- to 40-pound bluefin gets started in late June when water temperature hits 68 degrees. Williams switches to trolling once he begins to see bluefin in his slick. He’ll troll two planer boards with spoons plus various green, yellow or purple Jets and Zukers in his spread. Later in the year, he’ll head farther offshore to chunk – usually in Chicken Canyon, which is about 55 miles southeast of the inlet. “You always want to be looking for temperature breaks, surface activity and clear water when tuna are the target,” stressed Williams. “Also, don’t pass on the lobster pots. There are plenty of them in the Mud Hole and they hold a ton of mahi.” Overnight accommodations are easy to find in Point Pleasant Beach. Williams suggested Surf Side Motel. f you’ve ever wanted to tangle with Pacific halibut, this summer would be a good time to book a trip to northern California to do battle with some of the biggest, best-tasting flat fish on the planet. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) reports that the 2019 recreational Pacific halibut season is off to a strong start. Since opening day on May 1, many north coast anglers have braved less-thanperfect weather and ocean conditions and were successful in pursuing this highly prized fish. Preliminary catch data available through the first five days of the fishery indicates almost 2,500 pounds of fish were caught. “This is a level of success more typically seen during the summer months,” said CDFW environmental scientist Melanie Parker. Again this year, the public can follow the progress of catch through the season compared to the quota on the CDFW Pacific Halibut webpage, which is updated weekly. The fishery is scheduled to be open through Oct. 31, or until the quota has been met, whichever comes first. The 2019 quota is 39,000 pounds, approximately 8,000 pounds greater than last year. rift boats long ago earned their place in big-water trout fishing. With an oarman steering anglers into range of fish as the boat hurtles downriver, they are an extremely efficient way of covering water and catching fish. Drift boats are designed to go one direction: downstream. They track straight, and their light weight makes them agile in avoiding obstacles. They are awesome boats, an icon of the sport, but in many situations there’s a case to be made for the lowly aluminum jonboat in tailwater trout fishing. Perhaps it’s not fair to refer to these vessels as lowly, or even as jonboats. River boats might be a better description of the trickedout aluminum crafts on rivers these days. They might not have the classic look associated with fly fishing, but equipped correctly there are many advantages to a flat-bottomed aluminum boat.

he International Game Fish Association (IGFA) recently announced changes to its angler recognition programs, including new eligible species for Line Class, Tippet Class and Junior/Smallfry world records; new Slam & Trophy Club programs; standard minimum ratios required for Line Class and Tippet Class world record submissions; and clarifications to its World Record Requirements. These new world record categories, angler recognition programs and world record requirements began May 1. IGFA has begun maintaining separate Atlantic and Pacific record categories for bonefish in the same way that it does for snook. This will provide more opportunities for anglers to pursue world record catches of this iconic game fish. Current bonefish records will be reassigned based on where they were caught. Two new species will be added to Line Class, Tippet Class and Junior/ Smallfry record categories: snubnose pompano and milkfish. Both are highly sought after by anglers in the Indo-Pacific and will comprise part of the new IGFA Inshore Grand and Royal Slam Clubs. New Inshore Grand Slam and Royal Slam Historically, IGFA’s Inshore Grand Slam Club has included four species: bonefish, tarpon, permit and snook. The IGFA has expanded this club to include Atlantic bonefish, Pacific bonefish, Atlantic snook, Pacific 4

Mobility: The most obvious advantage is the ability to move quickly upstream or down. Equipped with a conventional or jet outboard, there is no stretch of river the angler can’t reach. This removes the necessity for separate put-in and takeout locations. From a single put-in, miles of river are accessible, and if the fish aren’t biting where you are, just crank the motor and move. Maneuverability: With its squared angles and flat bottom, a jonboat can’t match the straight-line tracking or agility of V-hulled boats on the drift. If left to its own nature, a jonboat would spin down the river. However, equipped with a rowing seat and oarlocks, it does a passable job of imitating the function of a driftboat, and that flat bottom is good in skinny situations. Let’s not forget the aluminum hull, which stands up to a serious beating. A trolling motor at the bow can completely eliminate the need for rowing in many situations. Drifting stern-first downstream, a trolling motor with a remote can do almost anything a pair of oars can. The poor guy who was previously strapped to the oars can now fish and steer from the bow. Stability: Leg braces are required to fly fish from drift boat. They can be equipped on a jonboat, but they’ll likely just be in the way. That wide, flat hull makes a jonboat stable. Even in rough water, it’s possible to stand on the deck and cast, turn around or do jumping jacks if you want. The ability to move around on a deck is a benefit that must be experienced to understand; it makes fishing easier and more comfortable. Obviously, a flat-bottomed, aluminum boat isn’t suitable in all situations. But depending on where you fish, it is definitely worth considering. An added bonus is versatility. Catching any three of these species in a day constitutes an Inshore Grand Slam, catching any four in a day is an Inshore Super Slam, catching any five in a day is a Fantasy Slam. Catching all 13 species during a lifetime earns the new IGFA Inshore Royal Slam. New Bigeye and Yellowfin Tuna Trophy Clubs Any angler who catches a bigeye tuna or a yellowfin tuna fishing in accordance with IGFA International Angling Rules that weighs at least 90 kg (200 lbs.) or has a fork length of at least 1.7 m (70 inches) will qualify for one of these new trophy clubs. Minimum Ratio Requirement The minimum ratio for world record catches will be set at 1⁄2 to 1 for all Line and Tippet Classes. Under this requirement, the weight of the fish must be at least half as much as the Line or Tippet Class that it qualifies for based on pounds. Changes to World Record Requirements IGFA’s World Record Requirements have changed to ensure consistency with the internal record review process. Importantly, these changes eliminate of the requirement that, “the fish must be a species commonly fished for with rod and reel in the general area where the catch was made.” IGFA now welcomes world record applications from anglers passionate about catching lesser known or exotic species. IGFA has also amended its Record Catch Regulations to clarify that, “The IGFA will not recognize or approve any IGFA World Record application where a financial award is offered for obtaining the record.” This was necessary to avoid legal disputes.

J
eff Bonawitz, of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, had already caught several 30 pounders from the Susquehanna River on April 6 and was running low on bait. He selected the biggest bluegill from the bait tank, and the fish that ate it turned out to be a 50-pound, 7-ounce new state record flathead catfish. “I could tell it was big. It kept hanging down deep and when it finally came up to the top, we thought it might be a mermaid,” joked Bonawitz. “I’ve fished the Susquehanna for years, and I’ve never caught anything quite like it.” It took 25 minutes to land the fish on an 8-foot, medium-action spinning rod loaded with 25-pound-test mono. Bonawitz kept the fish alive in an aerated container at his home until the following day. On April 7, the fish was officially weighed, setting a new state record for the species. The previous record, caught in 2006, weighed 48-pound, 6-ounces. There are several organizations that claim larger fish as the world record, but IGFA recognizes a 123-pound flathead caught from Elk City Reservoir in Kansas as the All-Tackle World Record. Upon weighing the fish, Bonawitz with assistance from his nephew, Dylan, 8, released the catfish back to the Susquehanna River. “It was such an amazing fish,” said Bonawitz. “I thought the best thing to do was put it back so that maybe the next guy could catch it. I have a feeling this record may not last very long.”
