ecember is the start of cold Ray Clark and crew with a few temperatures and clear nice sheepshead. water. This is the time of year that I start to reduce the size of my baits to help entice opportunistic feeders. Spring, summer and fall I recommend larger baits to match the hatch but for winter, size down to present a better presentation. Target shallow flats that have exposed grass or oyster outcrops and focus on working your bait as close to the structure as possible. When the water starts to crest the tops of the bars work yourself off the structure methodically. A great upper to middle column bait is the spoon. Aqua Dream Living by Captain Mike Hakala makes a great spoon that mimics most bait. Pick your favorite color and work it over mixed bottom and oyster bars. Another fantastic artificial bait for the winter months is the 6” DOA glow jerk bait or the Slayer Inc. soft plastic line. Rig these soft plastics with a 1/16 oz. weed less hook or a Slayer Inc. jig head. I feel tide in December is another very important factor to catching fish. Look for the mid-morning high tide to catch all of the opportunistic feeders making their way onto warmer flats heated by the sun. Redfish, trout, sheephead and drum can be caught in huge numbers in the winter months following this mid-morning pattern. The trout and redfish bite has been excellent in areas between Turkey Point and Lanark with reports of anglers limiting out. Most trout reports I am getting are folks set up in 1-2 feet of water drifting over mixed bottom throwing soft jerk baits in the middle to lower water column. Jason Callaghan recently got into a good number of fish around Alligator Harbor. Jason has been catching his fish on suspending baits and soft plastics. Sheephead and flounder are being caught in good numbers all the way through the Big Bend. December and January can be very productive months to fish around inshore and nearshore structure for these two species. I will usually gather up fiddler crabs or a few dozen shrimp to fool the sheephead and mud minnows work very well for the flounder. The Big Bend has one of the best fisheries in the entire state, so get out, support your local tackle shop and bend a rod!

rouper are moving into state waters. As the water temps continue to drop Gag grouper are showing up in good numbers around Rotary Reef and other inshore man made structure areas. Trolling stretch Ed Villoldo poses with this nice gag grouper. 30's in the fire tiger pattern will bend a rod, create a battle, and provide a great dinner all at the same time. Remember, gags are minimum 24 inch total length and you can keep 2 per person per day. Red grouper are 20 inch minimum total length and you can also keep 2 of them per person per day. Trout are still on the flats but moving toward the river and creek mouths as water temps fall. Popping corks or jigheads with Gulps, DOA or Saltwater Assassins work on the flats. When you get closer to the mouth or around the bars drop a live shrimp or cut mullet on the bottom and you have a good chance at trout, redfish or sheepshead. ecember can be an outstanding month to fish Apalachee Bay. The water is getting clear, and the fish are concentrated in smaller areas. Yes, there will be plenty of boats fishing the rivers, but the magic will be around the creeks. Also, offshore should be awesome! December can be an outstanding month to fish Apalachee Bay. Also, offshore should be awesome! The trout bite has been super on the flats east of the lighthouse. I haven’t seen great numbers, but they have been hungry. By December most fish will move in shallow. Look for the best bite close to shore. Work the flats adjacent to the creeks, and find your ways into the creeks. If it stays warm, the trout will stay aggressive. Corks and jigs will catch them. Redfish are fired up this month! Find them with topwater or bouncing jigs in the creek holes. Look for fish to lay shallow warming on an incoming afternoon tide. It is a great time to sight cast for reds. They will eat jerk baits, bounced within their strike zone. The key is to SLOW down to a crawl, and see them before they see you boat. It is great winter fun, on a warm day. If you are fishing the river? Concentrate on the deep holes for both trout and reds. Live shrimp will work, but slow bounced jigs work too. Remember, keep the river a no wake zone and the fishing will be better for everyone. Anchor up and enjoy a slow incoming or outgoing bite! Offshore should be AWESOME! You just have to find the calm days. Gag grouper is open! It closes this month, so enjoy the clean water bite. Grab some cut mullet and bucket full of live shrimp and take them for an offshore adventure. All public reefs will hold fish this month. We made it through another year. THANK YOU JESUS. rout and redfish have been plentiful and my clients are having a blast catching limits of each on every trip. This report comes early this month as today is November 10th and so far the trout have been right on schedule moving in towards the hill after the recent dip in Matt Williams of Dallus, Ga. with 26" 11/4/17 water temps down to 58 degrees. The Gulf was 78 degrees yesterday, so they have dealt with the yo-yoing of water temps in a week's time and yet the larger trout are starting to stage up in front of the rocky areas adjacent to creeks and troughs as they normally do this time of year seeking the warmth provided by the shallows. We have caught most of our fish on live bait; but have had several nice days with plugs and plastic. Look for plugs to take more fish than bait once the water gets down in the mid to low 60's and holds there. Lipped jerkbaits such as BiteA-Bait fighters, Cordell Redfins and Bomber Long A's will all take trophy trout in those conditions in December. I like the last of incom- Elaina Fontenot of Lafayette, Louisiana ing and the first hour-and-a-half of with her largest trout-to-date the fall when plugging in early winter. I expect to throw MirrOdines, Catch 2000's, Softdines, Paul Brown Devils from L&S later in the month as the Gulf cools towards 60 degrees. We will also being throwing Assassin's New "Salty Snacks" in the colder water of December. Try the five new colors in the Salty Snack: Golden Bream, Molting, Plum /Chartreuse tail, Snow Storm and Watermelon/Red Glitter. I'm planning on catching them on the Golden Bream. Reds should eat many of the same baits as trout but don't forsake your Thunder-Spins, Intruder Spoons and Sleighs in December. Gold and Copper are my go-to blade colors. t the time of this writing, winter is creeping in with the second noticeable cold front passing over. However, warmer weather keeps popping through. If the weather remains on the warm side, the Spanish mackerel southern migration may hold into December. Right now on Little Bank the game is to try and cast and not catch a mackerel. The standard flashy jigs and spoons are making reel drags sing to happy anglers. Remember Spanish mackerel don't free e well, so there is no need to keep more than you can eat fresh. Gag grouper season will close the end of this month. The good news is gags have moved in shallower water and trolling large Mirror lures, Magnum Rapalas, Mann's Stretch series and such is an effective means to catch some gags and find some new holes. The local favorites Florida snapper and black sea bass will be happy to take cut bait, squid or simply a chunk of GULP. It is likely the water will be gin clear so you can peer overboard and see the reef and fish on it. Light tackle adds much to the fun. With the water temperatures dropping, trout and redfish will be putting on the feedbag preparing for the paucity of true winter. Flats fishing should pick up dramatically especially if the tide is incoming during the warm of the day. If the temperature takes a drop, slow down the presentation. This is good time for a strip of mullet worked low and slow. The pinfish aren't as abundant so the bait won't get picked to the skin. Blue-bird winter days offer some of the years finest fishing and with many folks in the woods there is less pressure even on the weekends.! FORECAST BY: Capt. Brian E. ey folks, I surely hop e you have been enjoying the outdo ors, w it h t he cooler temps we are having, the fishing is on fire. The trout are just about everywhere, from the inshore flats to the creeks, so if you can to fish in the creeks, I would start at the mouths of the creeks and work in. The trout that are on the flats are starting to key-in on the flats that still have grass. Even though it’s not been that cold, the grass is still getting thin. The B52 Super Sounder cork matched with a Saltwater Assassin jig beneath it, should produce fish whether you are in the creeks or on the flats. The redfish bite has slowed down a little around the islands, but it has really picked up in the creeks! They can be targeted a number of ways in the creeks, from artificial, to live shrimp, or cut mullet. When the tide is low, they will congregate in the deeper bends, and as it comes in, they will scatter out to feed. Well I hope y’all have a great Christmas and remember the reason for the season. So get outside and enjoy what God made for us.
